Group 2 - FRONT SUSEENSION The Front Wheel Suspension System i s of the same basic design used I n Model PC-3.? with the following changes: FRONT SUSPENSION HEIGHT The difference i n the height between the f l o o r and the measuring points on each lower control arm (lowest point on b a l l j o i n t housing -and underside of bushing housing between the flanges of arm) should be 1 3/4 inches. This height must be maintained / or - 1/8 inch with the maximum d i f f e r e n t i a l from the r i g h t to the l e f t of l / 8 inch.

Group 5 - SERVICE BRAKES The Brake System i s o f the same basic design as used on Model PC-3* The power brake i s a special Bendix u n i t w i t h a modified housing t o c o n t r o l routing of the intake manifold vacuum hose t o the u n i t , and eliminate interference a t the carburetor. For servicing the brakes, r e f e r t o the Brake Group 5 of the i960 Chrysler and Imperial Service Manual.

Group 7 - COOLING SYSTEM The Cooling System i s the same design as used on Model PC-3 except the Silent F l i t e Fan Drive, which i s standard equipment. A box shroud i s used on cars equipped w i t h A i r Conditioning.

Adjust the carburetor f o r proper i d l e as indicated i n the Fuel System Group to.obtain satisfactory, i d l e cooling. For servicing, refer t o the Cooling System of the i960 Chrysler and Imperial Service Manual.

The Chrysler 300-F i s powered by a new high performance version of the k±3 cubic inch engine* The outstanding feature i s the new long branch ram induction intake manifolds cast of aluminum. Two four-barrel carburetors and new dual a i r cleaners are used, as shown i n Figures 2, 3 and k.

The engines uses the high load valve springs and s p i r a l type surge dampers.

Engine Idle Setting Set the i d l e adjustment t o obtain a smooth i d l e at 725-750 rpm, as outl i n e d i n the Fuel Group of the i960 Chrysler and Imperial Service Manual.

I g n i t i o n Timing Disconnect d i s t r i b u t o r vacuum l i n e , set i g n i t i o n at 5 degrees BTDC and reset engine i d l e back t o 725-750 rpm i f necessary.

Valve Timing Procedure (1) Check the accuracy of the TDC mark on the pulley ( v i b r a t i o n damper) by bringing the number one piston t o top dead center.

(2) Rotate the crankshaft u n t i l #6 exhaust valve i s closing and #6 i n take valve i s opening.

(3) I n s t a l l a d i a l indicator on #1 intake valve so that the indicator pointer contacts the retainer as near t o a 90° angle as possible. ( k ) Insert a l/k inch spacer between the rocker arm and the stem of #1 intake valve (second valve from the f r o n t on the l e f t bank). Allow the spring load to bleed the tappet down giving i n e f f e c t a s o l i d tappet. Adjust the d i a l indicator t o zero.

(5) Turn the crankshaft clockwise (normal running d i r e c t i o n ) u n t i l the valve has l i f t e d .03^ inch. The timing of the crankshaft should be now read from 10° BTC t o 2° ATC. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise u n t i l the d i a l indicator i s at zero and remove the spacer.

Group 10 - ENGINE OILING SYSTEM The Engine Oiling System remains the same as used on Model PC-3° Chrysler and Imperial Service Manual.

Group 11 - EXHAUST SYSTEM Two manifold heat control valves are used on the C-300-F, as shown i n Figure 13.

Larger exhaust pipes w i t h balance pipe, and low r e s t r i c t i o n mufflers are used on the C-300-F, as shown i n Figure 5o Group 13 - FRAME The Frame i s of the same basic construction as used i n the PC-3 Models. For servicing of the frame, r e f e r t o Group 13 of the i960 Chrysler and Imperial Service Manual.

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENTS CHOKE VALVE OFfiN?

The following adjustments should "be made w i t h the carburetor on the bench f o r ease of working, and should be made i n the following order: Ao

Fast Idle Adjustment AT THIS A H O i f ^

( l ) With the choke valve held t i g h t l y closed and carburetor inverted, t i g h t e n the f a s t i d l e adjusting screw (on the high step of the f a s t i d l e cam) ' u n t i l wire gauge Tool T-109-29 (.020 inch) can be inserted between the primary t h r o t t l e valve and the bore (side opposite i d l e p o r t ) , as shown i n Figure 6. The index mark on the f a s t i d l e cam should be i n d i r e c t l i n e w i t h the f a s t i d l e screw shank.

(2) Invert the carburetor and open the t h r o t t l e valves to wide open position. Close the choke valve t i g h t l y and then close the t h r o t t l e valves. Release the choke valve.

This w i l l position the f a s t i d l e cam t o f a s t i d l e . The index mark on the cam should l i n e up w i t h the center of the f a s t i d l e adjusting screw, as shown i n Figure 7.

(3) I f an adjustment i s necessary, bend the f a s t i d l e connector rod at the angle, using Tool T-109-213, u n t i l the index mark on the cam indexes the f a s t i d l e adjusting screw.

Choke Unloader Adjustment

(1) With the t h r o t t l e valves i n the wide open p o s i t i o n , i t should he possible t o insert Tool T-109-31 (lA inch) gauge between the upper edge of the choke valve and the inner w a l l of the a i r horn, as shown i n Figure 8 0

(2) I f an adjustment i s necessary, bend the unloader l i p on the t h r o t t l e shaft lever, using, Tool T~109-^l> u n t i l correct opening has been obtained, Co

Accelerator Pump Adjustment

(1) Move the choke valve t o wide open p o s i t i o n , t o release the f a s t i d l e cam. Back o f f the i d l e speed adjusting screw (curb i d l e ) u n t i l the t h r o t t l e valves are seated i n the bores, (2) Measure the distance from the top of the plunger shaft, using a "T" scale, as shown i n Figure 9. This distance should be 7/16 inch on AFB 2903s.

(3) I f an adjustment i s necessary, bend the t h r o t t l e connector rod at the lower angle, using Tool T-109-213, u n t i l correct trave has been obtained.

Secondary Throttle Lever Adjustment

(1) To check the secondary t h r o t t l e lever adjustment, block the choke valve i n the wide open position and invert the carburetor„ (2) Slowly open the primary t h r o t t l e valves u n t i l i t i s possible t o measure l ^ / 6 k inch between the lower edge of the primary valve and the bore (opposite i d l e p o r t ) , as shown i n Figure 10. At t h i s point, the secondary valves should j u s t s t a r t t o open.

(3) The stop lugs on both the primary and secondary t h r o t t l e levers should contact the "bosses on the flange a t the same time. ( k ) I f an adjustment i s necessary, bend the secondary t h r o t t l e operating rod at the angle, using Tool T-109-213, u n t i l correct adjustment has been obtained,, (5) At wide open t h r o t t l e , the primary and secondary t h r o t t l e valves should reach the f u l l v e r t i c a l position.

(6) With the primary and secondary t h r o t t l e valves i n the t i g h t l y closed position, i t should be possible t o i n s e r t Tool T-109-29 (*020 inch) wire gauge, between the positive closing shoes on the secondary t h r o t t l e levers, as shown i n Figure 11.

(7) I f an adjustment i s necessary, bend the shoe on the secondary t h r o t t l e lever, using Tool T-109-22, u n t i l correct clearance-has been obtainedo Eo

Secondary Throttle Lock-Out Adjustment

(1) Open the t h r o t t l e valves, then manually open and close the choke valve The tang on the secondary t h r o t t l e lever should f r e e l y engage i n the notch of the lockout dogo 0

(2) I f an adjustment i s necessary, bend the tang on the secondary t h r o t t l e lever, u n t i l engagement has been made. Use Tool T-109-22 f o r t h i s operation.

(3) After adjustments have been made, r e i n s t a l l carburetor on engine, using a new gasket. ( k ) I t i s suggested that the carburetor bowl be f i l l e d w i t h clean gasoline This w i l l help prevent d i r t t h a t i s trapped i n the f u e l system from being dislodged by the free flow of f u e l , as the carburetor i s primed.

AUTOMATIC CHOKE (Well Type) To function properly, I t i s important that a l l parts "be clean and move f r e e l y . Other than the occasional cleaning, the automatic choke control requires no servicing. I t i s very important, however, that the choke c o n t r o l u n i t works f r e e l y at the thermostatic c o i l spring housing and a t the choke shafto Move the choke rod up and down to check f o r free movement of the c o i l housing on the p i v o t I f the u n i t binds, a new u n i t should be i n s t a l l e d * The Well Type Choke Control Unit i s serviced, only as a complete u n i t . Do not attempt t o repair (See Fig. ±2)« 0

Do not lubricate any parts of the choke or c o n t r o l u n i t since t h i s causes d i r t accumu l a t i o n which would r e s u l t I n binding of the choke mechanism.

Do not attempt t o change the c a l i b r a t i o n setting* (Refer t o Specifications}* This i s pre-determined and should i t be changed, improper choke action would r e s u l t .

Clean a l l choke parts using a suitable solvent and then blow dry w i t h compressed a i r * Examine a l l choke parts f o r wear or damage* Worn or damaged parts must be replaced with new parts i n order t o insure proper choke operation.

When i n s t a l l i n g the w e l l type choke u n i t , make c e r t a i n t h a t the c o i l housing does not contact the sides of the w a l l i n the intake- manifold* Any contact a t t h i s p o i n t w i l l a f f e c t choke operation* The proper assembly sequence of the ram manifold choke t o the intake manifold i s as follows: (1)

IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT (CURB IDLE) The i d l e speed adjustment i s made a f t e r the carburetors have been I n s t a l l e d on the engine.

(1) With the t h r o t t l e values closed, and the choke valve wide open (engine a t normal operating temperature), adjust the i d l e by-pass air-bleed screw at 725-750 rpm on APB 2903S Ram Manifold Carburetors using a tachometer* (2) Adjust the i d l e mixture screws u n t i l the engine operates smoothly, then recheck the tachometer and again adjust the I d l e by-pass air-bleed screws of both carburetors to give the correct engine rpm* RAM INDUCTION MANIFOLD The Ram Induction Manifold equipped engine, as shown i n Figure 13, consists of twin a i r cleaners, twin AFB carburetors (with i n d i v i d u a l automatic w e l l type chokes) and two aluminum manifolds, containing eight long sweeping passages (four i n each manif o l d ) a l l of which represent a new method of f u e l induction*

Jhs a i r - f u e l mixture from each carburetor flows i n t o a chamber d i r e c t l y under the carburetor, then passes through the long i n d i v i d u a l intake branches t o the opposite cylinder banko The r i g h t hand carburetor supplies a i r - f u e l mixture f o r the l e f t hand cylinder bank, whereas the l e f t hand carburetor supplies the r i g h t hand cylinder bank.

The passages between the r i g h t and l e f t hand manifolds are inter-connected w i t h a pres sure equalizer tube e

The t h r o t t l e linkage operates through a center mounted b e l l crank and controls both carburetors a t the same time I t i s very important that i f one or more of the carburetors has been removed or either manifold, t h a t a complete linkage adjustment be made i n order t o obtain peak engine performanceo (Refer t o Paragraph f o r "Setting the Ram Manifold Tnrottle Linkage").

(15) Slide the e q u a l i z e r tube, clamps and couplings over the manifold tubes. Slide e i t h e r coupling outward f a r enough to f i r m l y engage the manifold. Tighten the clamps securely.

ADJUSTING THE AMI-STALL DEVICE (1) To readjust the a n t i - s t a l l device, i t i s necessary that the engine be at normal operating temperature and that the curb i d l e speed be 7 ^ 5 to 7 5 0 rpm and constant with the transmission i n neutral (N) and the a i r conditioning compressor "ON" ( i f so equipped). (See next Paragraph "Adjusting the Ram Manifold AFB 2903s Series ' Carburetors" to obtain t h i s i d l e speed).

(2) With the transmission i n Drive (D) and with the parking brake and the foot brakes applied, turn the a n t i - s t a l l plunger toward the bellcrank u n t i l clearance of .010" has been obtained. (Refer to Figure l 6 ) G

ADJUSTING THE RAM

MMIFOLD AFB 2903S SERIES CARBURETOR

Two k b a r r e l AFB 2903S s e r i e s carburetors are used on the Ram Induction Manifold equipped c a r s . These carburetors are fundamentally the same as AFB k b a r r e l c a r buretors used on the other i960 models. The s e r v i c e procedures f o r disassembly, cleaning, inspection and reassembly follow the same sequence of operations as covered f o r the other AFB carburetors.

Idle Speed and Mixture Adjustment (On the V e h i c l e )

•Before the i d l e speed and mixture adjustments are made, inspect to be sure that the t h r o t t l e linkage to both carburetors allows the return to the i d l e p o s i t i o n simultaneously. This i s very important i n obtaining a good i d l e setting, since these carburetors are equipped with a bypass a i r bleed for s e t t i n g the i d l e speed* The I g n i t i o n timing should be checked to make c e r t a i n i t i s within s p e c i f i c a t i o n s , 5 ° BTC on the Chrysler Model C - 3 0 0 - F as t h i s also a f f e c t s i d l e q u a l i t y . I f the i g n i t i o n timing i s not within s p e c i f i c a t i o n s , disconnect the vacuum advance l i n e at the d i s t r i b u t o r as there i s f u l l vacuum advance at i d l e and s e t the timing with the engine i d l e speed below 6 0 0 rpm and transmission i n neutral and a i r conditioning compressor "OFF" ( i f so equipped). I f , under these conditions, i d l e speed i s s t i l l above 6 0 0 rpm, adjust both carburetor i d l e by-pass a i r bleed screws equally u n t i l desired" i d l e speed i s obtained* Connect the vacuum advance l i n e and warm engine up to normal operation temperature* , Disconnect each carburetor t h r o t t l e rod a t the b e l l c r a n k on the manifold, stop engine • (1)

Turn a l l adjusting screws (mixture and by-pass) i n finger t i g h t .

Open the by-pass i d l e a i r bleed screws one f u l l turn.

Open each i d l e mixture screw 3 / ^ turn.

Connect a tachometer, then s t a r t the engine.

( 5 ) Turn the mixture screws on the l e f t carburetor l / 8 turn at a time -until the smoothest i d l e has been obtained. ( 6 ) Repeat t h i s procedure on the r i g h t carburetor, keeping the mixture screws within l / 8 turn of each other. ( 7 ) With the transmission i n Neutral (N), a i r conditioning compressor "ON" ( i f so equipped) and parking brake applied, set the curb i d l e speed from 7 2 5 to 7 5 0 rpm by adjusting the by-pass a i r bleed screws on each carburetor. Be sure to keep the by-pass a i r bleed screw openings equal on both carburetors * (8)

Repeat steps 5 , 6 and 7 u n t i l a smooth i d l e at 7 2 5 to 7 5 0 rpm has been obtained.

Connect each carburetor t h r o t t l e rod at the bellcrank*

F a s t I d l e Adjustment (On V e h i c l e )

When making f a s t i d l e adjustment on the v e h i c l e , each AFB carburetor should he adjusted i n d i v i d u a l l y o To make the f a s t i d l e adjustment, proceed as follows: (1) The engine should he a t normal operating temperature and have a curb i d l e speed of 7 2 5 to 7 5 0 rpm with transmission i n (N) and a i r conditioning compressor "ON" ( i f equipped).

Turn a i r conditioning compressor "OFF" ( i f so equipped).

(3)

Remove each a i r cleaner.

( k ) Disconnect each t h r o t t l e rod a t the b e l l c r a n k on the intake manifold.

(5) Open the t h r o t t l e valves of the l e f t carburetor f a r enough to allow positioning of the f a s t i d l e index mark. The r i g h t carburetor should remain a t the curb i d l e position.

(6) Adjust f a s t i d l e screw u n t i l a f a s t i d l e speed of 1 3 7 5 to 1 ^ 2 5 rpm i s obtained on the Chrysler Model C - 3 0 0 - F .

(7) After the desired engine speed has been obtained, open the t h r o t t l e s l i g h t l y to allow the f a s t i d l e cam to return to the open choke (or off f a s t i d l e ) p o s i t i o n .

(8) Repeat steps, 5 > 6 and 7 i n s e t t i n g the r i g h t carburetor f a s t i d l e speed as i t i s very important a t the completion of t h i s step ( 8 ) , that each carburetor has i d e n t i c a l f a s t i d l e speeds.

NOTE; There i s no s p e c i f i c a t i o n for engine rpm with both carburetors set at the f a s t i d l e p o s i t i o n .

Indexing the Choke Piston

Before indexing the choke piston, be sure the i g n i t i o n system and timing are a t the required s p e c i f i c a t i o n s , that the manifold heat control valves are operating properly ( t h i s i s very important for normal warm-up of the engine).

After the above items have been inspected and corrected index the choke p i s t o n as follows: (1)

Remove the choke housing b a f f l e p l a t e .

(2) Remove the t h r o t t l e return spring, so that the t h r o t t l e can be s e t a t one quarter open.

(3)

Be sure the choke valve i s wide open.

(k) S l i d e a . 0 2 6 inch wire into the choke piston s l o t , so that the hook on the end enters the s l o t i n the cylinder, as shown i n Figure l 6 .

(This gauge can be made by bending the . 0 2 6 inch end of wire gauge Tool T - I O 9 - I 8 9 to form the shape, as shown i n Figure l 6 .

(5) Push on the choke valve, counterclockwise, trapping the wire gauge between the piston and the cylinder s l o t (choke linkage hanging free)-,, (6) I t should now be possible, to i n s e r t a No. 3 - d r i l l between the choke valve and wall of the a i r horn* I f an adjustment i s necessary, bend the l i n k that connects the choke shaft to the choke piston l e v e r (at angle) u n t i l the correct clearance has been obtained.

(7) Place the choke b a f f l e plate i n position and i n s t a l l r e t a i n i n g screws. Tighten securely* (8)

Positioning the Accelerator Pedal (1)

Unsnap the accelerator pedal to shaft rod.

(2) Turn the threaded end of rod e i t h e r i n or out u n t i l an angle of Ilk degrees i s obtained "between the f l o o r of car and the f l a t face of the accelerator pedal.

(3)

This angle can "be obtained w i t h a p r o t r a c t o r .

( k ) After the correct angle has been obtained, connect the rod. pin from the accelerator shaft bracket.

Remove the locating

Setting the Bellcrank (1) Inspect each carburetor to be sure the choke valves are open; t h a t the f a s t i d l e cams are released and the t h r o t t l e valves are closed.

Loosen the locking nuts C and "D" ( l e f t and r i g h t bank carburetor rods).

(3) Back o f f the a n t i - s t a l l adjusting plunger f a r enough to allow the bellcrank t o be pivoted. ( k ) Pivot the bellcrank u n t i l a 3 / l 6 inch piece of d r i l l rod 3 inches long can be inserted through the bellcrank hole and down into the Intake manifold.

(5) Tighten the locking nuts "C" and "D" securely. from the bellcrank.

Remove the 3 / 1 6 inch d r i l l rod

(6) Push rearward on the accelerator shaft t o t h r o t t l e shaft lever rod adjusting l i n k , u n t i l the stop i s reached. Tighten the locking nut securely.

Group 23 - BODY AM) SHEET METAL The basic body t o frame assemblies are similar t o the PC-3 standard body. The door and quarter glass and panels are the same as used on the PC-3 Special Club coupe and convertibles, respectively, except t h a t new chrome moulding attaching holes must be d r i l l e d i n panels t o correspond w i t h the body t r i m mouldings, therefore, doors and quarter panels should be obtained without moulding holes* The rear deck l i d has been modified w i t h standard deck l a t c h and lock assembly w i t h special spare t i r e motif. Use deck l i d less holes, and d r i l l t o s u i t .

Swivel seats are standard equipment on the Chrysler 3 0 0 - F . Separating the four seats down the center o f the car i s a raised instrument control console extending from the instrument panel a l l the way t o the back o f the rear seats, as shown i n Figures 1 7 and 1 8 . The tachometer, f r o n t window l i f t s and ash t r a y and l i g h t e r , are shown i n the middle o f the f r o n t seats, and the ash t r a y and l i g h t e r , are shown i n the middle of the rear seats, w i t h both window l i f t switches. I n s t a l l a t i o n , removal and servicing of body components are similar t o the procedures i n the i 9 6 0 Chrysler and Imperial Service Manual. ' Group 2k - AIR CONDITIONING Air Conditioning on f i r s t production cars was the same as PC-3, and on cars after production, the a i r conditioning suction and l i q u i d l i n e s were rerouted plus an additional tube added f o r expansion valve t o the evaporator u n i t , due t o the ram manifold engine. (See Fig. 1 9 ) .

The Chrysler 300-F i s powered by a new high performance version of the k±3 cubic inch engine* The outstanding feature i s the new long branch ram induction intake manifolds cast of aluminum. Two four-barrel carburetors and new dual a i r cleaners are used, as shown i n Figures 2, 3 and k.

The engines uses the high load valve springs and s p i r a l type surge dampers.

Engine Idle Setting Set the i d l e adjustment t o obtain a smooth i d l e at 725-750 rpm, as outl i n e d i n the Fuel Group of the i960 Chrysler and Imperial Service Manual.

I g n i t i o n Timing Disconnect d i s t r i b u t o r vacuum l i n e , set i g n i t i o n at 5 degrees BTDC and reset engine i d l e back t o 725-750 rpm i f necessary.

Valve Timing Procedure (1) Check the accuracy of the TDC mark on the pulley ( v i b r a t i o n damper) by bringing the number one piston t o top dead center.

(2) Rotate the crankshaft u n t i l #6 exhaust valve i s closing and #6 i n take valve i s opening.

(3) I n s t a l l a d i a l indicator on #1 intake valve so that the indicator pointer contacts the retainer as near t o a 90° angle as possible. ( k ) Insert a l/k inch spacer between the rocker arm and the stem of #1 intake valve (second valve from the f r o n t on the l e f t bank). Allow the spring load to bleed the tappet down giving i n e f f e c t a s o l i d tappet. Adjust the d i a l indicator t o zero.

(5) Turn the crankshaft clockwise (normal running d i r e c t i o n ) u n t i l the valve has l i f t e d .03^ inch. The timing of the crankshaft should be now read from 10° BTC t o 2° ATC. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise u n t i l the d i a l indicator i s at zero and remove the spacer.

( l ) With the choke valve held t i g h t l y closed and carburetor inverted, t i g h t e n the f a s t i d l e adjusting screw (on the high step of the f a s t i d l e cam) ' u n t i l wire gauge Tool T-109-29 (.020 inch) can be inserted between the primary t h r o t t l e valve and the bore (side opposite i d l e p o r t ) , as shown i n Figure 6. The index mark on the f a s t i d l e cam should be i n d i r e c t l i n e w i t h the f a s t i d l e screw shank.

(2) Invert the carburetor and open the t h r o t t l e valves to wide open position. Close the choke valve t i g h t l y and then close the t h r o t t l e valves. Release the choke valve.

This w i l l position the f a s t i d l e cam t o f a s t i d l e . The index mark on the cam should l i n e up w i t h the center of the f a s t i d l e adjusting screw, as shown i n Figure 7.

(3) I f an adjustment i s necessary, bend the f a s t i d l e connector rod at the angle, using Tool T-109-213, u n t i l the index mark on the cam indexes the f a s t i d l e adjusting screw.

Choke Unloader Adjustment

(1) With the t h r o t t l e valves i n the wide open p o s i t i o n , i t should he possible t o insert Tool T-109-31 (lA inch) gauge between the upper edge of the choke valve and the inner w a l l of the a i r horn, as shown i n Figure 8 0

(2) I f an adjustment i s necessary, bend the unloader l i p on the t h r o t t l e shaft lever, using, Tool T~109-^l> u n t i l correct opening has been obtained, Co

Accelerator Pump Adjustment

(1) Move the choke valve t o wide open p o s i t i o n , t o release the f a s t i d l e cam. Back o f f the i d l e speed adjusting screw (curb i d l e ) u n t i l the t h r o t t l e valves are seated i n the bores, (2) Measure the distance from the top of the plunger shaft, using a "T" scale, as shown i n Figure 9. This distance should be 7/16 inch on AFB 2903s.

(3) I f an adjustment i s necessary, bend the t h r o t t l e connector rod at the lower angle, using Tool T-109-213, u n t i l correct trave has been obtained.

Secondary Throttle Lever Adjustment

(1) To check the secondary t h r o t t l e lever adjustment, block the choke valve i n the wide open position and invert the carburetor„ (2) Slowly open the primary t h r o t t l e valves u n t i l i t i s possible t o measure l ^ / 6 k inch between the lower edge of the primary valve and the bore (opposite i d l e p o r t ) , as shown i n Figure 10. At t h i s point, the secondary valves should j u s t s t a r t t o open.

(3) The stop lugs on both the primary and secondary t h r o t t l e levers should contact the "bosses on the flange a t the same time. ( k ) I f an adjustment i s necessary, bend the secondary t h r o t t l e operating rod at the angle, using Tool T-109-213, u n t i l correct adjustment has been obtained,, (5) At wide open t h r o t t l e , the primary and secondary t h r o t t l e valves should reach the f u l l v e r t i c a l position.

(6) With the primary and secondary t h r o t t l e valves i n the t i g h t l y closed position, i t should be possible t o i n s e r t Tool T-109-29 (*020 inch) wire gauge, between the positive closing shoes on the secondary t h r o t t l e levers, as shown i n Figure 11.

(7) I f an adjustment i s necessary, bend the shoe on the secondary t h r o t t l e lever, using Tool T-109-22, u n t i l correct clearance-has been obtainedo Eo

Secondary Throttle Lock-Out Adjustment

(1) Open the t h r o t t l e valves, then manually open and close the choke valve The tang on the secondary t h r o t t l e lever should f r e e l y engage i n the notch of the lockout dogo 0

(2) I f an adjustment i s necessary, bend the tang on the secondary t h r o t t l e lever, u n t i l engagement has been made. Use Tool T-109-22 f o r t h i s operation.

(3) After adjustments have been made, r e i n s t a l l carburetor on engine, using a new gasket. ( k ) I t i s suggested that the carburetor bowl be f i l l e d w i t h clean gasoline This w i l l help prevent d i r t t h a t i s trapped i n the f u e l system from being dislodged by the free flow of f u e l , as the carburetor i s primed.

AUTOMATIC CHOKE (Well Type) To function properly, I t i s important that a l l parts "be clean and move f r e e l y . Other than the occasional cleaning, the automatic choke control requires no servicing. I t i s very important, however, that the choke c o n t r o l u n i t works f r e e l y at the thermostatic c o i l spring housing and a t the choke shafto Move the choke rod up and down to check f o r free movement of the c o i l housing on the p i v o t I f the u n i t binds, a new u n i t should be i n s t a l l e d * The Well Type Choke Control Unit i s serviced, only as a complete u n i t . Do not attempt t o repair (See Fig. ±2)« 0

Do not lubricate any parts of the choke or c o n t r o l u n i t since t h i s causes d i r t accumu l a t i o n which would r e s u l t I n binding of the choke mechanism.

Do not attempt t o change the c a l i b r a t i o n setting* (Refer t o Specifications}* This i s pre-determined and should i t be changed, improper choke action would r e s u l t .

Clean a l l choke parts using a suitable solvent and then blow dry w i t h compressed a i r * Examine a l l choke parts f o r wear or damage* Worn or damaged parts must be replaced with new parts i n order t o insure proper choke operation.

When i n s t a l l i n g the w e l l type choke u n i t , make c e r t a i n t h a t the c o i l housing does not contact the sides of the w a l l i n the intake- manifold* Any contact a t t h i s p o i n t w i l l a f f e c t choke operation* The proper assembly sequence of the ram manifold choke t o the intake manifold i s as follows: (1)

IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT (CURB IDLE) The i d l e speed adjustment i s made a f t e r the carburetors have been I n s t a l l e d on the engine.

(1) With the t h r o t t l e values closed, and the choke valve wide open (engine a t normal operating temperature), adjust the i d l e by-pass air-bleed screw at 725-750 rpm on APB 2903S Ram Manifold Carburetors using a tachometer* (2) Adjust the i d l e mixture screws u n t i l the engine operates smoothly, then recheck the tachometer and again adjust the I d l e by-pass air-bleed screws of both carburetors to give the correct engine rpm* RAM INDUCTION MANIFOLD The Ram Induction Manifold equipped engine, as shown i n Figure 13, consists of twin a i r cleaners, twin AFB carburetors (with i n d i v i d u a l automatic w e l l type chokes) and two aluminum manifolds, containing eight long sweeping passages (four i n each manif o l d ) a l l of which represent a new method of f u e l induction*

Jhs a i r - f u e l mixture from each carburetor flows i n t o a chamber d i r e c t l y under the carburetor, then passes through the long i n d i v i d u a l intake branches t o the opposite cylinder banko The r i g h t hand carburetor supplies a i r - f u e l mixture f o r the l e f t hand cylinder bank, whereas the l e f t hand carburetor supplies the r i g h t hand cylinder bank.

Left Hand Manifold (11) Remove the eight attaching h o l t s that hold the l e f t fender shield access plate to the fender shield, then slide the plate out of the engine compartment• (12)

(20) Remove the two b o l t s that attach the r i g h t hand exhaust manifold elbow t o the lower chamber. Discard the gasket* (21) Remove the four b o l t s that attach the ram manifold t o the l e f t hand bank cylinder head* Remove the exhaust passage crossover cover* (22)

(1) Place the automatic choice control u n i t i n the reinforcement and w e l l cup* Slide the assembly down into p o s i t i o n i l l the intake manifold, using a new gasketo I n s t a l l attaching bolts and tighten* (2) Place the carburetor i n p o s i t i o n on the mounting pad of the intake manifold and engage the automatic choke control rod w i t h the choke lever* Secure w i t h c l i p . I n s t a l l the carburetor mounting nuts and t i g h t e n .

(3) Place the intake manifold assembly i n position on the r i g h t hand bank cylinder head. Place the exhaust crossover passage cover over the passage, then i n s t a l l the manifold attaching bolts finger t i g h t * ( k ) Slide a new gasket between the l e f t hand exhaust manifold elbow and the lower chamber of the intake manifold* I n s t a l l attaching bolts finger t i g h t * (5) Slide a new gasket between the l e f t hand exhaust by-pass pipe and the manifold lower chamber* I n s t a l l the attaching b o l t s and tighten to 10 foot-pounds torque* Tighten the elbow attaching bolts to 10 foot-pounds torque and the intake manifold bolts to 50 foot-pounds torque* (6) Slide the l e f t hand fender shield access plate into position against the fender shield. I n s t a l l the bolts and tighten* I f both ram manifolds were removed, continue to i n s t a l l the r i g h t hand manifold as follows: (7) Place the automatic choke control u n i t i n the reinforcement and w e l l cup, slide the assembly down into p o s i t i o n I n the intake manifold, using a new gasket* I n s t a l l attaching bolts and tighten* (8) Place the carburetor i n p o s i t i o n on the mounting pad of the intake manifold and engage the automatic choke control rod w i t h the choke lever* Secure w i t h c l i p . I n s t a l l the carburetor mounting nuts and t i g h t e n .

I n s t a l l attaching bolts and t i g h t e n to 10 foot-pounds torque* Tighten the elbow attaching bolts to 10 foot-pounds torque and the intake manifold bolts to 50 foot-pounds torque* (12) Slide the r i g h t hand fender shield access plate into p o s i t i o n against the fender shield* I n s t a l l bolts and tighten* (13) Place the a i r conditioning compressor and brackets i n p o s i t i o n ( i f so equipped) and i n s t a l l the attaching b o l t s * Tighten securely* (Refer to the A i r Conditioning Group 2k f o r method of recharging the system).

(15) Slide the e q u a l i z e r tube, clamps and couplings over the manifold tubes. Slide e i t h e r coupling outward f a r enough to f i r m l y engage the manifold. Tighten the clamps securely.

(16) Connect the t h r o t t l e linkage a t both carburetors and b e l l c r a n k to accelerator shaft.

(2) Back off the ant i n s t a l l adjusting plunger f a r enough to allow the bellcrank to be pivotedo TOTS: Hold the a n t i - s t a l l control push rod while adjusting set screw to prevent damage to the diaphragm.^ (3) Pivot the b e l l c r a n k u n t i l a 3/l6 inch piece of d r i l l rod 3 inches long can be inserted through the b e l l c r a n k hole and down into the l o c a t i n g hole i n the intake manifoldo (k) Inspect each carburetor to be sure the choke valves are open, that the f a s t i d l e cams are released, and that the t h r o t t l e valves are i n the closed p o s i t i o n .

Tighten locking nuts "C" and "D" securely <> Remove the d r i l l rod from bellcrank.

(6) Push rearward on the accelerator shaft to t h r o t t l e shaft l e v e r rod adjusting l i n k , u n t i l stop i s f e l t . Tighten the locking nut "B" securely* (7) Depress accelerator pedal a l l the way to the f l o o r and check primary and secondary t h r o t t l e valves for WOT p o s i t i o n .

ADJUSTING THE AMI-STALL DEVICE (1) To readjust the a n t i - s t a l l device, i t i s necessary that the engine be at normal operating temperature and that the curb i d l e speed be 7 ^ 5 to 7 5 0 rpm and constant with the transmission i n neutral (N) and the a i r conditioning compressor "ON" ( i f so equipped). (See next Paragraph "Adjusting the Ram Manifold AFB 2903s Series ' Carburetors" to obtain t h i s i d l e speed).

(2) With the transmission i n Drive (D) and with the parking brake and the foot brakes applied, turn the a n t i - s t a l l plunger toward the bellcrank u n t i l clearance of .010" has been obtained. (Refer to Figure l 6 ) G

ADJUSTING THE RAM

MMIFOLD AFB 2903S SERIES CARBURETOR

Two k b a r r e l AFB 2903S s e r i e s carburetors are used on the Ram Induction Manifold equipped c a r s . These carburetors are fundamentally the same as AFB k b a r r e l c a r buretors used on the other i960 models. The s e r v i c e procedures f o r disassembly, cleaning, inspection and reassembly follow the same sequence of operations as covered f o r the other AFB carburetors.

The following information covers only the adjustments that d i f f e r from conventional mounted carburetors* Ao

Idle Speed and Mixture Adjustment (On the V e h i c l e )

•Before the i d l e speed and mixture adjustments are made, inspect to be sure that the t h r o t t l e linkage to both carburetors allows the return to the i d l e p o s i t i o n simultaneously. This i s very important i n obtaining a good i d l e setting, since these carburetors are equipped with a bypass a i r bleed for s e t t i n g the i d l e speed* The I g n i t i o n timing should be checked to make c e r t a i n i t i s within s p e c i f i c a t i o n s , 5 ° BTC on the Chrysler Model C - 3 0 0 - F as t h i s also a f f e c t s i d l e q u a l i t y . I f the i g n i t i o n timing i s not within s p e c i f i c a t i o n s , disconnect the vacuum advance l i n e at the d i s t r i b u t o r as there i s f u l l vacuum advance at i d l e and s e t the timing with the engine i d l e speed below 6 0 0 rpm and transmission i n neutral and a i r conditioning compressor "OFF" ( i f so equipped). I f , under these conditions, i d l e speed i s s t i l l above 6 0 0 rpm, adjust both carburetor i d l e by-pass a i r bleed screws equally u n t i l desired" i d l e speed i s obtained* Connect the vacuum advance l i n e and warm engine up to normal operation temperature* , Disconnect each carburetor t h r o t t l e rod a t the b e l l c r a n k on the manifold, stop engine • (1)

Turn a l l adjusting screws (mixture and by-pass) i n finger t i g h t .

Open the by-pass i d l e a i r bleed screws one f u l l turn.

(3)

Open each i d l e mixture screw 3 / ^ turn.

(k)

Connect a tachometer, then s t a r t the engine.

( 5 ) Turn the mixture screws on the l e f t carburetor l / 8 turn at a time -until the smoothest i d l e has been obtained. ( 6 ) Repeat t h i s procedure on the r i g h t carburetor, keeping the mixture screws within l / 8 turn of each other. ( 7 ) With the transmission i n Neutral (N), a i r conditioning compressor "ON" ( i f so equipped) and parking brake applied, set the curb i d l e speed from 7 2 5 to 7 5 0 rpm by adjusting the by-pass a i r bleed screws on each carburetor. Be sure to keep the by-pass a i r bleed screw openings equal on both carburetors * (8)

Repeat steps 5 , 6 and 7 u n t i l a smooth i d l e at 7 2 5 to 7 5 0 rpm has been obtained.

Connect each carburetor t h r o t t l e rod at the bellcrank*

I f either carburetor has been removed f o r cleaning or r e p a i r , set the t h r o t t l e l i n k age as outlined -under Paragraph "Setting the Ram Manifold Throttle Linkage"*

F a s t I d l e Adjustment (On V e h i c l e )

When making f a s t i d l e adjustment on the v e h i c l e , each AFB carburetor should he adjusted i n d i v i d u a l l y o To make the f a s t i d l e adjustment, proceed as follows: (1) The engine should he a t normal operating temperature and have a curb i d l e speed of 7 2 5 to 7 5 0 rpm with transmission i n (N) and a i r conditioning compressor "ON" ( i f equipped).

(2)

Turn a i r conditioning compressor "OFF" ( i f so equipped).

(3)

Remove each a i r cleaner.

( k ) Disconnect each t h r o t t l e rod a t the b e l l c r a n k on the intake manifold.

(5) Open the t h r o t t l e valves of the l e f t carburetor f a r enough to allow positioning of the f a s t i d l e index mark. The r i g h t carburetor should remain a t the curb i d l e position.

(6) Adjust f a s t i d l e screw u n t i l a f a s t i d l e speed of 1 3 7 5 to 1 ^ 2 5 rpm i s obtained on the Chrysler Model C - 3 0 0 - F .

(7) After the desired engine speed has been obtained, open the t h r o t t l e s l i g h t l y to allow the f a s t i d l e cam to return to the open choke (or off f a s t i d l e ) p o s i t i o n .

(8) Repeat steps, 5 > 6 and 7 i n s e t t i n g the r i g h t carburetor f a s t i d l e speed as i t i s very important a t the completion of t h i s step ( 8 ) , that each carburetor has i d e n t i c a l f a s t i d l e speeds.

NOTE; There i s no s p e c i f i c a t i o n for engine rpm with both carburetors set at the f a s t i d l e p o s i t i o n .

Indexing the Choke Piston

Before indexing the choke piston, be sure the i g n i t i o n system and timing are a t the required s p e c i f i c a t i o n s , that the manifold heat control valves are operating properly ( t h i s i s very important for normal warm-up of the engine).

After the above items have been inspected and corrected index the choke p i s t o n as follows: (1)

Remove the choke housing b a f f l e p l a t e .

(2) Remove the t h r o t t l e return spring, so that the t h r o t t l e can be s e t a t one quarter open.

(3)

Be sure the choke valve i s wide open.

(k) S l i d e a . 0 2 6 inch wire into the choke piston s l o t , so that the hook on the end enters the s l o t i n the cylinder, as shown i n Figure l 6 .

(This gauge can be made by bending the . 0 2 6 inch end of wire gauge Tool T - I O 9 - I 8 9 to form the shape, as shown i n Figure l 6 .

(5) Push on the choke valve, counterclockwise, trapping the wire gauge between the piston and the cylinder s l o t (choke linkage hanging free)-,, (6) I t should now be possible, to i n s e r t a No. 3 - d r i l l between the choke valve and wall of the a i r horn* I f an adjustment i s necessary, bend the l i n k that connects the choke shaft to the choke piston l e v e r (at angle) u n t i l the correct clearance has been obtained.

(7) Place the choke b a f f l e plate i n position and i n s t a l l r e t a i n i n g screws. Tighten securely* (8)

Connect the t h r o t t l e return spring.

The disassembly, inspection, and assembly procedures are the same* There i s a d i f ference, however, i n l i n e pressure, governor, planet pinion c a r r i e r , and t h r o t t l e linkage adjustment; they are as follows: ( l ) The l i n e pressure i s increased from 9 0 to 1 0 5 p s i ( r e f e r to Ram Manifold Line Pressure C h a r t ) I n order to compensate f o r t h i s change a heavier regulator valve spring i s used.

( 3 ) Due to the increased torque provided by ram induction, the kickdown and reverse planet pinion c a r r i e r assemblies d i f f e r , they embody a planet pinion c a r r i e r that i s made of. a d i f f e r e n t aluminum a l l o y . (k) The t h r o t t l e linkage i s designed to conform with the ram manifold equipped engine (Refer to F i g . 1 5 ) , I t i s very important that the t h r o t t l e linkage be set i n the following order: Positioning the Accelerator Shaft (1) Loosen the Adjusting nuts "A" and "B" ( a c c e l e r a t o r shaft to transmission rod and accelerator shaft to t h r o t t l e shaft l e v e r r o d ) .

(2) Insert a piece of 3 / 1 6 inch d r i l l rod, 1 0 inches long into the a c c e l e r a t o r shaft bracket and through the hole i n the l e v e r «

(3) Move the ..aismission t h r o t t l e c o n t r o l lever forward uni-il i t stops. the lockout "A" securely. This positions the accelerator shaft.

Tighten

Positioning the Accelerator Pedal (1)

Unsnap the accelerator pedal to shaft rod.

(2) Turn the threaded end of rod e i t h e r i n or out u n t i l an angle of Ilk degrees i s obtained "between the f l o o r of car and the f l a t face of the accelerator pedal.

This angle can "be obtained w i t h a p r o t r a c t o r .

( k ) After the correct angle has been obtained, connect the rod. pin from the accelerator shaft bracket.

Remove the locating

Setting the Bellcrank (1) Inspect each carburetor to be sure the choke valves are open; t h a t the f a s t i d l e cams are released and the t h r o t t l e valves are closed.

Loosen the locking nuts C and "D" ( l e f t and r i g h t bank carburetor rods).

(3) Back o f f the a n t i - s t a l l adjusting plunger f a r enough to allow the bellcrank t o be pivoted. ( k ) Pivot the bellcrank u n t i l a 3 / l 6 inch piece of d r i l l rod 3 inches long can be inserted through the bellcrank hole and down into the Intake manifold.

(5) Tighten the locking nuts "C" and "D" securely. from the bellcrank.

Remove the 3 / 1 6 inch d r i l l rod

(6) Push rearward on the accelerator shaft t o t h r o t t l e shaft lever rod adjusting l i n k , u n t i l the stop i s reached. Tighten the locking nut securely.

Group 23 - BODY AM) SHEET METAL The basic body t o frame assemblies are similar t o the PC-3 standard body. The hood panel, and radiator g r i l l e are e n t i r e l y d i f f e r e n t from other Chrysler Models. The roof panel, windshield and rear glass, f o r the Special Club Coupe are the same as used on other Chrysler Special Club Models. The convertible windshield, f o l d i n g top and rear curtain are the same as used on the PC~3 convertibles 0

The door and quarter glass and panels are the same as used on the PC-3 Special Club coupe and convertibles, respectively, except t h a t new chrome moulding attaching holes must be d r i l l e d i n panels t o correspond w i t h the body t r i m mouldings, therefore, doors and quarter panels should be obtained without moulding holes* The rear deck l i d has been modified w i t h standard deck l a t c h and lock assembly w i t h special spare t i r e motif. Use deck l i d less holes, and d r i l l t o s u i t .

Swivel seats are standard equipment on the Chrysler 3 0 0 - F . Separating the four seats down the center o f the car i s a raised instrument control console extending from the instrument panel a l l the way t o the back o f the rear seats, as shown i n Figures 1 7 and 1 8 . The tachometer, f r o n t window l i f t s and ash t r a y and l i g h t e r , are shown i n the middle o f the f r o n t seats, and the ash t r a y and l i g h t e r , are shown i n the middle of the rear seats, w i t h both window l i f t switches. I n s t a l l a t i o n , removal and servicing of body components are similar t o the procedures i n the i 9 6 0 Chrysler and Imperial Service Manual. ' Group 2k - AIR CONDITIONING Air Conditioning on f i r s t production cars was the same as PC-3, and on cars after production, the a i r conditioning suction and l i q u i d l i n e s were rerouted plus an additional tube added f o r expansion valve t o the evaporator u n i t , due t o the ram manifold engine. (See Fig. 1 9 ) .

Service Procedures w i l l remain the same as outlined i n the Imperial Service Manual.
