CLUTCH CONTROL LEVER

THROTTLE CONTROL & ENGINE STOP LEVER

CONTROLS AND OPERATION This tiller has the following controls: (Figure 1).

ON ENGINE A. Engine Rewind Starter B. Engine Choke ON HANDLE BAR A. Clutch Control Lever B. Throttle Control and Engine Stop Lever C. Handle Control Lever ON TINE SHIELD A. Depth Control Lever

HANDLE BAR The handle bar has two operating locations (see Figure 2). In the tilling location, the tines are immediately i n front of the operator. In the transport location, the engine is immediately in front of the operator.

HANDLE CONTROL LEVER The handle control lever controls the handle swing location and the handle height. To swing the handle bar, pull back on the lever. Swing to either right or left t o the desired position, then release the control lever and swing back and forth slightly until the handle latch engages. To adjust handle height, pull back on control lever without swinging handle. Move handle t o desired height. Release lever and move handle up and down slightly until handle locks in the desired height position. NOTE: When pulling back on the handle control lever, the clutch control lever is automatically moved to the neutral position.

CLUTCH CQNTROL LEVER The clutch control lever is a single lever that engages and disengages drive to both the tines and the wheels.

NOTE: When the handle bar i s in transport location, the clutch control lever will only operate by pulling the lever back. This engages the drive to the wheels and the tiller moves forward at transport speed. When released, the control lever returns to neutral.

STARTING THE TILLER Now that you have located the controls and under-''.. stand their operation and function, it is time to start your tiller.

1. Place clutch control lever in neutral.

2. Push throttle control lever ahead to fast position.

3. Adjust engine choke to proper position.

4. Start engine by pulling starter cord

CAUTION: Do not adjust tilling depth with the tines rotating. Place clutch control lever in the neutral position before making adjustments of depth control.

To Stop Engine

CAUTION: If depth control lever is raised too high, the tines will propel the tiller forward pushing the drive wheels along the ground at an uncontrolled speed.

Tire Pressure

Check t i r e pressure. The recommended operating t i r e pressure i s 20 lbs.

1. Place clutch control lever in neutral position

2. Pull throttle control and engine stop lever t o the stop position.

LUBRICATION

. LRANKCASE WITH OIL Use a high quality detergent oil classified "For Service SC or SD or MS".

Nothing should be added to the recommended oil.

OIL FILLER PLUG

If not available, Use SAE 10W or SAE 10W-30 Below O0 F, Use SAE 10W or SAE 10W-30 Diluted 10% with Kerosene DIRECTIONS: Place the engine level. Remove oil filler plug or Oil-Minder. FlLL THE OIL SUMP TO OVERFLOWING or to the FULL mark on dipstick. Pour slowly.

Capacity 1l/4 pints.

FILL FUEL TANK Use clean, fresh, lead-free or leaded "regular" grade automotive gasoline. Fill tank completely!

OIL LEVEL & FlLL SCREW Chain Cases: Both the wheel drive and the tine drive cases use lead base (EP) SAE 140 heavy duty oil (Part 4890). Check oil level every 25 hours.

The following procedure should be followed to check lubricant level of cases. When checking cases, do not drain excess lubricant out of the cases.

WHEEL DRIVE CASE LUBE CHECK PROCEDURE 1. Set depth control lever to shallowest setting (Figure 3).

2. Remove plug from case (Figure 3). Case has sufficient oil if oil is up to bottom of plug hole. It may be more convenient to remove the right wheel when checking this level.

3. Remove plug from case to check oil level (Figure 4). Case has sufficient oil if oil is up to bottom of inspection plug hole.

NOTE: If additional lubrication is required in either chaincase, tipping the unit on the left side and removal of the wheel and tire assembly, or tine hub will aid in the filling of the cases.

LUBRICATION The following points should be lubricated with engine oil every eight hours. Before oiling attempt to clean off area to be lubricated.

A. The 4 idler pulleys.

B. The handle plunger shaft and disc.

C. The control rod swivels.

D. The handle rotating surface.

E. Cam and detent ball and shaft.

F. Handle control lever.

G. Tine drive bellcrank pivot.

CAUTION: Never attempt to make adjustments on the tiller while the engine is running. Always stop the engine and disconnect the wire from the spark plug before attempting to make adjustments.

The tine drive belt, which is the outer belt, is adiusted by loosening the clamp cap screws ( ~ i ~ u 6) r eand rotating the entire case and tine assembly. Rotate case forward to slacken belt and back to tighten belt. With the clutch control lever in the forward drive position, the distance between the inside of the belt should be approximately % inch as shown in Figure 7. Tighten the clamp bolts securely after adjustment. Place depth control in shallowest setting and start engine. With control lever i n neutral position, tines should not rotate. If tines rotate, readjust to increase belt slack until tines do not drive in neutral.

4. Loosen drive case clamp bolts.

WHEEL DRIVE BELT ADJUSTMENT The wheel drive belt, which is the inner belt, is adjusted by moving the right hand idler (Figure 8). With the clutch control lever in the neutral position, the traction belt should have approximately '/4 inch between the upper idler and the belt (Figure 8). The adjustment idler should be positioned to obtain this 1h inch. Moving idler up will increase clearance and down will decrease clearance.

NOTE: With clutch control lever in drive position, belt should run true on all pulleys. If it does not, pulleys must be aligned or their mounting plateslarms bent slightly to align.

NOTE: The adjustment idler has four locations and is not slot mounted. The machine screw must be removed from the mounting frame when making this adjustment.

WHEEL DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT 1. Remove the tine drive belt per instructions.

2. Remove the retaining ring i n the idler arm shaft (Figure 5).

3. Remove the belt from the wheel drive case pulley.

4. Remove wheel drive pulley by iemoving retaining ring and sliding pulley off shaft. (CAUTION: Do not lose woodruff key in drive pulley shaft.) (Figure 5).

5. Remove cotter pin from idler arm link.

6. Slide idler arm assemblies out until the spacer can be slid out between the idler and idler arm. Remove belt. To replace belt, reverse above procedure.

Be sure belt is turned inside out (wide side on pulleys) before installing on pulleys (Figure 8).

7. Readjust belt as outlined under belt,adjustments.

8. Replace belt guard.

NOTE: The belts on this tiller were specifically designed and engineered to provide long, trouble-free service. If belt replacement is required, order the part number shown in the parts list to be sure you have a belt that will provide the life and service required.

lghten the adjustment nut only enough to eliminate any excess movement in the handle control lever (Figure 9).

CAUTION: With handle in lowest tilling position height and clutch control rod in neutral, tighten adjustment nut on handle latch lever only enough to remove end play in rod. Do not overtighten. Control rod must allow latch to fit all the way into the notches.

The clutch control lever is pre-set for neutral shift position. An adjustment means is provided, however, to center the clutch control lever in the slot on the handle shroud should it become necessary due t o wear. This adjustment is located at the handle pivot point (Figure 10).

With handle in lowest tilling position height and clutch control rod in neutral, the clearance between the clutch control rod end through handle tube slot, and front edge of slot should be l3h" +'1/16".(Figure 11).

1. Place handle bar in tilling location and adjust handle bar to lowest position.

2. Loosen the adjustment nut (Figure 10).

3. Move the clutch control lever on the handle bar until centered in the neutral area (Figure 12).

4. Retighten the adjustment nut (Figure 10).

NEUTRAL AREA 3TE: If unit jumps out of gear, check to see that the control rod end is not contacting the bottom end " of slot in handle tube. If necessary loosen adjustment nut described 'above and slide bellcrank with rod assembly attached up so it does not. (See Figures 10 and 1 I)#

1. Remove main belt guard by removing the three 1/4-20 x 1/2 hex hd. capscrews. (Not shown)

2. Remove depth control handle knobs and push depth control down as far as possible. Remove the top 5/16-18 x '/2 capscrew in tine shield and the 511618 x 21/4 capscrew through tabs in the front corners of tine shield. Pull tine shield up and back to remove, Figure 13.

3. Remove the 2 5/16-18 x 2% hex hd. capscrews securing mount support assembly for depth control between frame halves. Carefully pull assembly down and to the rear to free.

CAUTION: Depth control has spring tension against support. When installing hook both ends of spring to depth bar before mount support assembly is bolted in place, Figure 14.

4. Remove both main drive pulleys by removing snap rings from shafts and sliding pulleys off input shafts of gearcases.

NOTE: Do not lose woodruff key in each shaft, Figure 15.

o: Set handle in transport location and allow unit to

rest on weights in front. Remove bellcrank mounting bolt (A) and six capscrews mounting tunnel assembly to top flanges of frame halves. Allow tunnel to separate from frame as high as possible in rear. See Figure 16.

6. Remove tine hub assemblies from tineshaft.

7. Using a hacksaw with the blade turned 90° cut metal strip off directly above cut out in left frame half only. See Figure 17.

8. Remove the two capscrews securing tine drive case in place and loosen carriage bolt holding wheel drive case in place. See Figure 18.

9. Push case ahead and up into tunnel bottom while separating frame halves slightly. This will unseat case bosses and allow top of chaincase to be worked out between tunnel and frame flanges. Chaincase is then pulled out the rear. See Figures 19 and 20.

10. Cut templates along dark lines removing diagonal lined areas. Tape the templates (208949 right frame, and 210350 left frame) to their respective frame members using location points for reference. Mark trame members for lower cut out and center punch the two holes marked on both sides for adjustment slot. Remove template. See Fig.

11. Drill two 11/32 holes on each frame for adjustment slot.

Remove remaining material to create a new adjustment slot 11/32" wide (see Fig. 22). Using a sabre saw or an acetylene torch, remove lower plate along cut line (necessary precautions should be taken when using either of these tools). Remove burrs or rough edges on frame halves. (See Fig. 22)

12. Prior to assembling the new case to the tiller, add the can of 4890 gear lube furnished with gear case through the fill hole on the right hand side of the chain case. Install new felts and washers to each shaft as follows: Place a large steel washer on tine shaft, this washer rests against the three tabs in outer ring of the bushing and seal support tube. Then install the large felt seal against this washer.

Next install the thicker of the two remainina felt seals, then the steel washer, and finally the last felt seal.

13.Reassemble in reverse order. Tine case pivot hole is now lower front tine shield mounting bolt.

CHECK THE FOLLOWING SET-UP INSTRUCTIONS TO INSURE PROPER OPERATION OF UNIT:

See Figure 23. With handle shroud installed, the clutch control lever should be aligned with neutral shift position when clutch rod is in neutral.

With the idler in drive position the tine drive V-belt to have %" t ' l / s " between the inside of the belt. See Figure 24.

With the idler in drive position the tine drive V-belt to have %" ?k1/8" between the inside of the belt. See Figure 24. If unit jumps out of gear decrease setting to s/e" or 1/2".

Lower counterweight capscrew must go from the inside out - lockwasher and hex nut on outside of counterweight.

FIG. 24 In all handle positions the clutch control lever must remain locked in forward drive position when engaged and not release without manual disengagement. Clutch control lever to return freely to neutral when released from reverse position in tilling and transport handle positions.

Handle latch lever must release and lock freely into place for all handle height and angle positions. Handle latch lever to return the clutch control lever to neutral from drive position when handle latch is disengaged.

In all handle tilling and transport positions, the wheel and tine drive must completely declutch when the clutch control lever is placed in the neutral shift position. In transport handle position the tine drive must not engaqe when the wheel drive is engaged for transport.

5. Engage shift lever into drive and remove cotter pin from the end of the outer control rod link.

Remove 5/16-18 x 3 ! capscrew securing bellcrank assembly in place (Figure 29).

CAUTION: Note position of bellcrank for proper installation.

Remove the six capscrews mountina the tunnel assemblv to the top flanges of the frame halves. Lift tunnel up and then pull back to slip rods out of swivel in cam a m assembly and remove (Figure 30). Note - Bevel edge of swivel is installed first into cam arm assembly.

6. Remove the 2 5/16-18 x 2% hex hd. capscrews securing mount support assembly for depth control between frame halves. Carefully pull assembly down and to the rear to free.

7. Remove tine assembly by removing the 5/16-18 x 2

capscrew securing each assembly to tine shaft.

2. Remove depth control handle knobs and push depth control down as far as possible. Remove the top 5/16-18 x l/2 capscrew in tine shield and the 5/16-18 x 2'/4 capscrew through tabs in the front corners of tine shield. Pull tine shield up and back to remove (Figure 26).

3. Remove both main drive pulleys by removing snap rings from shafts and sliding pulleys off input shafts of gearcases.

4. Disconnect throttle cable at engine and remove the four 5/16-18 hex nuts and spring lockwashers holding engine in place. Remove engine.

8. Remove the two hex nuts securing right side weight assembly in place and slide weight outward as far as possible. Figure 32.

9. Remove the following:

A. The two capscrews securing tine drive case between frame halves.

B. The carriage bolt holding wheel drive case in place.

C. The two remaining bolts in the engine base plate assembly attached to left side frame half.

D. Remove the nut only from the capscrew supporting front of wheel dri ve case between frame halves (See Figure 33).

10. Pull halves apart in rear far enough to remove tine drive chaincase assembly (See Figure 34).

11. Push right weight back in place and temporarily ~ ,ecure with hex nuts.

12. Take right hand frame half and dislodge frame from 1

remaining carriage bolt. Tip right hand frame up and ahead to remove from wheel drive chaincase assembly (See Figure 35).

FIG. 3 5 13. Take left hand frame rail and work 1 remaining bolt out of wheel drive chaincase assembly, remove left hand frame rail from around chaincase (See Figure 36).

14. Remove depth control and wheel assemblies from chaincase assembly.

15. Add 8 oz. of Gilson 140 Wt. Lead Base EP Gear Lube to new chaincase assembly (available in 8 oz. cans No. 4890 or 1 gallon can No. 26405).

16. Install wheel assemblies and reverse procedure to install.

Peck lube level per instructions in lubrication :tion.

TlNElWHEEL CASE SEAL REPLACEMENT

1. Tilt and block unit so leaking seal faces upward, Figure 37.

2. Remove tine/wheel assembly by removing hub bolt.

A. For tine drive cases only. Remove felts and washer.

Note reassembly order, (Figure 38).

3. Clean shaft of all roughlraised spots with file and/ or emory cloth.

METAL WASHER

CAUTION: Clean seal area of dirt, debris, etc. before removing old seal.

Using a sharp instrument such as an awl, pierce the seal casing and pry seal out of housing. Remove from shaft.

CAUTION: Be careful not to scratch or nick the shaft.

5. Coat new seal with oil and slide seal (spring side toward case) onto shaft.

HINT: To help eliminate possible seal damage, we suggest that cellophane tape be wrapped around the tine shaft at bolt holes. Seal can now be gently tapped in place using a soft material hammer and blunt drive punch or piece of pipe slipped over shaft. Wipe off excess oil once seal is in place.

6. New felt seals should always be changed whenever new rubber seals are installed (tine case only). Figure 38.

NOTE: Felt seals are not a fix for a leakage problem.

THROlTLE CABLE REPLACEMENT

1. Disconnect throttle cable from engine.

2. Remove clamp for cable from side of pivot assembly.

3. Remove center screw holding handle shroud on handle assembly.

4. Remove both screws securing throttle control t o handle bar assembly.

5. Remove throttle control by pulling assembly out toward the top.

6. Reverse procedure to install.

NOTE: When installing the cable in handle tube, be sure that the cable is not wrapped around control rods in handle tube. It should lay along the bottom of the tube and exit out through the left circular cutout (see Figure 29) in the pivot assembly.

7. Check for normal operation of all controls.

CHAINCASE REPAIR

1. .Wheel and tine drive case are sealed assemblies.

Complete replacement of them is required except for the following conditions.

1. Tine shaft oil seal replacement.

2. Input shaft 0 ring replacement.

3. Lubricant installation.

4. Fill plug and nylon washer replacement.

PLUNGER

SAFETY LQCKQUT

This tiller has a safety lockout feature on it allowing the unit to drive "ahead" only and prevent the tines from rotating when handle is in the transport location.

The lockout feature is achieved through the use of a retainer bracket (Ref. P) mounted in the handle tunnel alongside the plunger assembly. The notched portion of washer should face end of retainer bracket that protrudes out toward it. They should not overlap or touch. This will allow plunger/washer to move down past the retainer end when lever is shifted into forward drive (See Figure 40).

When handle is turned 180' to the transport location, the round portion of washer is rotated over end of retainer bracket (See Figure 41) and restricts shift lever from being moved forward for "reverse" in transport position. This will also prevent the tines from being engaged.

TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE FAILURE -

Worn, shredded, or broken belt.

PROBABLE CAUSE

CORRECTIVE ACTION

1. Misaligned, loose, or *bent pulley.

1. Align and tighten or replace pulley. Adjust mounting bracket if necessary so belt runs true on pulleys.

Belt should run true on pulleys.

2. Belt guides misaligned.

2. Set belt guides so there is 1/16 to 118" clearance with belt engaged.

3. Worn or frozen idler pulley.

3. Remove idler, replace if necessary, lube shaft.

4. Substitute belt being used.

4. Use only Gilson part number belts.

5. Broken spring or cotter pin on control rods.

5. Replace broken part.

6. Chaincase locking up applying shock load to belt.

6. Replace chaincase assembly (per instructions).

('Wheel drive case pulley maximum turnout ,060) Chaincase assembly leaks.

Handle does not latch and lock into all positions.

1. Oil seals at output shaft leaking.

1. Replace oil seals as described in text.

2. Oil level plug not tight or nylon washer mushroomed out.

2. Replace nylon washer if necessary, install metal flat washer between head of plug and nylon washer, tighten.

3. Leak coming from input shaft area.

3. Remove cap around shaft, check condition of 0 Ring. Replace if necessary.

4. "0" Ring between case halves took set o r misaligned and oil leaking by.

4. Run unit for approximately 30 45 minutes to reseal. If leak persists, case must be replaced per instructions given.

1. Nut on end of control rod adjusted too tight.

1. Loosen nut on control rod.

2. Control rods binding inside handle.

2. Remove handle assembly correct binding rods.

3. Latch on pawl assembly bent.

3. Straighten or replace if necessary.

1. Tine drive belt gap incorrect.

1. Set to %" if problem still exists.

3. Readjust so l/4" gap is obtained in neutral (see Figure 8).

Check dimension between cotter pin holes on front lower control rod (with flat eyelet on one end).

Hole dimensions should be 61/s" center to center. Drill new hole towards flat eyelet end if dimensions are incorrect.

Unit is extremely hard to get out of gear.

5 . Detent nut and spring not properly adjusted holding ball into notches of cam assembly.

5. Tighten capscrew until it is tight in tube for detent spring under tunnel assembly (See Figure 19, Page 12). If problem persists, spring has taken preset and should be replaced.

6. Throttle cable jammed or pinched between rods in handle tube.

6. Throttle cable must be removed or repositioned in handle tube.

1. Linkages are bent or binding preventing shifting out of gear.

1. Locate binding or bent linkage, adjust or straighten, replace if necessary. Reinstall on unit.

2. Detent spring in barrel assembly 2. Replace spring.

(Ref. 19, Page 12) may be completely compressed when unit is shifted into gear. Because of this, detents on cam assembly are unable to compress spring anymore to allow unit to be shifted out of gear.

Shift lever does not lock into gear.

1. Tine drive belt or wheel drive belt improperly adjusted.

1. Reset to specifications in belt adjustment section.
