137. R&R AND OVERHAUL. To remove final drive assemblies, first drain oil from differential housing. Raise and support rear of tractor. Remove rear wheels and hitch lower arms and links. Disconnect brake rods from brake cam levers. To remove left housing, remove mounting cap screws. Tap housing with a soft mallet to loosen sealant, then remove axle housing. To remove right housing, first remove differential lock pedal. Remove bolts securing right step. Remove axle housing mounting cap screws. Tap housing with a mallet to loosen sealant and remove housing.

To disassemble, remove axle inner bearing (2-Fig. 127) using a suitable puller. Withdraw spacer (3) and bull gear (4). Remove snap rings (5), then drive axle shaft (10) out of outer bearing (6). Drive seals (7 and 8) out of housing.

Remove differential lock shifter shaft from right housing. On either housing, remove brake cover, shoes and drum (18). Remove snap ring (12) and tap pinion shaft (11) and bearing (13) out of housing. Remove sleeve (15) and bearing from pinion shaft. Drive oil seal (16) out of housing.

To reassemble final drives, reverse the disassembly procedure. Be sure to lubricate oil seals and "0" ring with grease prior to reassembly.

Reinstall final drive without shims (1) or sealant. Use a dial indicator to check axle shaft end play which should be 0.0-0.4 mm (0.0-0.016 inch). Remove axle housing and install shims as required to provide recommended end play.Apply Loctite Gasket Eliminator 515 to housing mounting surface. Reinstall axle housing and tighten mounting cap screws to a torque of 50-60 N-m (36-43 ft.-lbs.).

Models MT210-MT210DMT250—MT250D 138. R&R AND OVERHAUL. To remove final drive assemblies, first drain oil from differential housing. Raise and support rear of tractor. Remove rear wheels, hitch links and fenders.

Disconnect brake rods from brake cam levers. Support axle housing with a hoist and sling, then remove housing mounting cap screws. Tap housing with a soft mallet to loosen housing sealant bond, then pull housing away from rear frame.

Paragraphs 139-141 To disassemble, remove snap ring (1-Fig. 128) and pull inner bearing (2) off axle shaft. Remove spacer (3) and bull gear (4). Remove snap rings (5 and 15) from axle shaft (19), then drive shaft out of outer bearing. Remove snap rings (14), outer bearing (16) and oil seal (17) from housing. Pull seal wear sleeve (18) off shaft if necessary. Remove differential lock spring, hub and shifter shaft from right housing. On either housing, remove brake cover, shoes and drum (13). Remove snap ring (8), then tap pinion shaft (6) and bearing (9) from housing. Press bearing and oil seal sleeve (11) off shaft. Remove oil seal (10) from housing.

To reassemble final drive, reverse the disassembly procedure. Be sure to lubricate oil seals and "0" ring prior to reassembly.

To reinstall axle housing, first apply Loctite Gasket Eliminator 515 to housing mating surface. Assemble axle housing to rear frame and tighten MIO mounting bolts to a torque of 50-60 N*m (36-43 ft.-lbs.) and M12 bolts to 70-90 N-m (61-67 ft.-lbs.).

Models MT300-MT300D 139. R&R AND OVERHAUL. To remove final drive assemblies, first remove drain plugs (Fig. 130) and drain oil from axle housings. Raise and support rear of tractor. Remove rear wheels and fenders. Disconnect brake rods from brake levers. Support axle housing with a hoist and sling. Remove

housing mounting bolts and withdraw final drive assembly.

NOTE: While removing one side, support other side to prevent tipping.

To disassemble, remove snap rings (1-Fig. 129) and slide brake components (2 through 6) off pinion shaft.

Remove oil pan (15). Remove rubber cap (8), slotted nut (9) and washer (10). Pull axle shaft (20) from housing and remove bull gear (14), spacers (13 and 16) and inner race of bearing (11). Remove inner race of bearing (17) and oil seal (19) from shaft. Drive bearing outer races and sleeve (18) from housing. After axle shaft is removed, pinion shaft (25) may be removed as follows: Remove rubber plug (27) and nut (26). Drive shaft inward to remove from housing. Remove snap ring (21), spacer (22) and bearing (23) inner race from shaft. Drive bearing outer races from housing.

To reassemble final drive, reverse the disassembly procedure while noting the following: Tighten pinion shaft nut (26) to preload bearings to obtain shaft starting torque of 0.8-1.0 N-m (7-10 in.-lbs.).

Apply sealant to rubber plug (27), then press into housing bore until flush with housing outer surface. Be careful not to deform plug as it is being installed.

When assembling axle shaft, be sure sleeve (18) is installed with inside diameter chamfer facing outward. Make certain oil seal (19) lip is lubricated with grease and lip faces inward when installed. Adjust axle shaft bearing

preload as follows: With slotted nut (9) tightened fmger tight, measure torque required to start rotation of shaft. Then, tighten nut as required to provide a starting torque equal to original measurement plus 0.8-1.0 N-m (7-10 in.-lbs.). Apply sealant to rubber plug (8), then press plug into housing bore until flush with outer surface of housing.

Apply Loctite Gasket Eliminator 515 to mating surface of oil pan. Tighten oil pan cap screws to a torque of 25-30 N • m (18-22 ft.-lbs.). Tighten brake ball guide (6) mounting bolts to a torque of 40-45 N-m (30-33 ft.-lbs.).

Apply Loctite Gasket Eliminator 515 to mounting surface of axle housing.

Reinstall final drive assembly and tighten cap screws to a torque of 85-94 N-m (62-69 ft.-lbs.). Refill housing with good quality transmission/hydraulic oil.

Capacity is approximately 2.7 L (2.8 quarts). Adjust brakes as outlined in paragraph 143.

BRAKES 140. All tractors except Models MT300 and MT300D are equipped with dry, mechanically actuated, drum and shoe type brakes. Models MT300 and MT300D are equipped with wet, mechanically actuated, disc type brakes.

On all models, brake assemblies are located in final drive housings.

All Models Except MT300-MT300D 14L ADJUSTMENT. Brake pedal free play is the only adjustment required on brake system. To adjust, disconnect brake rod yoke (Fig. 131) and loosen locknut. Turn yoke to adjust length of brake rod to provide free play of 20 to 30 mm (13/16 to 1-3/16 inches). Be sure both pedals are adjusted evenly.
