The PSM (Porsche Stability Management) is automatically ready/switched on after each engine start.

Off-road PSM

When the Low Range/Off-road programmer is switched on, an off-road PSM specially adapted for off-road terrain to improve traction is automatically activated. At speeds below 35 km/h, the off-road PSM reacts later in the case of under or oversteering and improves the steering control.

Switching off PSM

Press the PSM switch. The PSM switches off after a short delay.

When the PSM is off, the PSM OFF warning light in the instrument panel and the indicator light in the switch are lit.

When braking, the vehicle is also stabilized when the PSM is switched off!  One-sided wheel spin is also prevented when the PSM is switched off!  On Tiptronic vehicles, the slip upshift function is switched off when PSM is switched off . Refer to Characteristic features of Tiptronic vehicles (slip upshift). 

The PSM should always be switched on for normal driving.

- When rocking the vehicle free - When using snow chains - On extremely difficult terrain (if one or more wheels have little or no road grip - engine performance is reduced) Switching PSM back on

Press the PSM switch. The PSM switches on after a short delay.

Characteristic features of Tiptronic vehicles (slip upshift)

When a maximum permissible speed difference between front and rear axle is exceeded, the integrated slip monitoring shifts into the next highest gear. This increases the driving stability on slippery roads.  When PSM is switched off, the slip monitoring (slip upshift function) is also switched off. In this way, the Tiptronic enables an active sporty driving style even when the friction coefficient is low as is the case with manual transmission vehicles. 

When the PSM is off, the PSM OFF warning light in the instrument panel and the indicator light in the switch are lit.

When braking, the vehicle is also stabilized when the PSM is switched off!  One-sided wheel spin is also prevented when the PSM is switched off!  On Tiptronic vehicles, the slip upshift function is switched off when PSM is switched off . Refer to Characteristic features of Tiptronic vehicles (slip upshift). 

The PSM should always be switched on for normal driving.

The speed sensor must be inserted using Optitemp (Optitemp LG2, 25-ml spray can available under Part No. 000.043.204.21).



The bore for mounting the speed sensor must be free of dirt.



Observe correct tightening torques.

REMOVING HYDRAULIC UNIT NOTE:



When fitting the hydraulic connections, the electric plug connections on the control units must remain connected as long as possible. This prevents the plug connections on the hydraulic unit or in the connectors inside from being splashed with brake fluid or water.



Any damp connector must be wiped dry before being disconnected from the connector on the hydraulic unit. If necessary, provide the connector with a suitable protector.



Brake fluid on electrical contacts (even thinned brake fluid) leads to corrosion and may cause faults in the system.



The brake lines must not be bent in the area of the hydraulic unit.



Clean the interfacing points of the brake lines, but not with cleaning agents.



Rinse off any brake fluid emerging thoroughly with water.

The hydraulic unit is installed in the plenum panel on the front right, under the DME control unit. See Fig. 6.

NOTE:



When fitting the hydraulic connections, the electric plug connections on the control units must remain connected as long as possible. This prevents the plug connections on the hydraulic unit or in the connectors inside from being splashed with brake fluid or water.



Any damp connector must be wiped dry before being disconnected from the connector on the hydraulic unit. If necessary, provide the connector with a suitable protector.



Brake fluid on electrical contacts (even thinned brake fluid) leads to corrosion and may cause faults in the system.



The brake lines must not be bent in the area of the hydraulic unit.



Clean the interfacing points of the brake lines, but not with cleaning agents.



Rinse off any brake fluid emerging thoroughly with water.

1. Release the ground cable -arrow- , unclip the wiring harness and set it aside. See Fig. 7.

retaining clips in the inside of the air duct.

4. Provide a suitable protector for the control unit connector.

5. Activate the brake pedal by hand using the brake pedal loader, (do not clamp it yet!). Plug the vent hose of the vent bottle onto the front left and rear left bleeder screw of the brake calliper (2nd fitter required). Open the bleeder screws until the brake pedal is completely pressed down. Tighten the brake pedal loader and close the bleeder screws. This will close the central valves of the tandem brake master cylinder so that only a little brake fluid can flow out of the opened brake system.

6. A sufficient number of cloths should be put under the hydraulic unit to absorb any brake fluid emerging. If some runs into the plenum panel nonetheless, immediately rinse thoroughly with water.

8. Pull off the control unit connector from the control unit.

9. Remove the hydraulic unit (a/f 8) and take out of the bracket, upwards.

WARNING: Porsche Stability Management does not work without values for the current brake pressure. 

Danger of personal injury and material damage when the hydraulic unit is not calibrated.

--> After assembling the hydraulic unit, a static test and a swap test must be carried out with the Porsche System Tester.

--> After assembly of the brake master cylinder or the hydraulic unit, the pressure sensor must be calibrated with the Porsche System Tester.

NOTE:



When fitting the hydraulic connections, the electric plug connections on the control units must remain connected as long as possible. This prevents the plug connections on the hydraulic unit or in the connectors inside from being splashed with brake fluid or water.



Remove the plugs on the new hydraulic unit after the respective brake line is fitted.



Pay attention to tightening torques --> 47 TW TIGHTENING TORQUES FOR BRAKE HYDRAULICS - AS OF MY 2003 (ALL MODELS EXCEPT CAYENNE S TIO TITAN) .

1. Bleed the brake system. To ensure the full function of the brake system, drain approx. 250 ccm brake fluid from each wheel. Refer to 47 01 07 Bleeding the brake system - as of MY 2003 (All Models Except Cayenne S TIO Titan) .

To do this, select menu >> PSM >> Calibration >> Pressure sensor <<. The security code is displayed in the Porsche System Tester under menu >> PSM >> Actual values <<. See Fig. 10.

3. The combination sensor (which contains the longitudinal and transverse acceleration sensor) and the steeringangle sensor must then be calibrated. The procedure for this is described in Step 2.

4. Perform a swap test with the Porsche System Tester. To do this, select menu >> PSM > > Function selection >> Drive links <<.

NOTE:

When replacing the hydraulic unit, the connected control mechanism must be coded with the Porsche System Tester (running gear and country coding). 

To do this, select menu >> PSM >> Function selection >> Coding << and the relevant country. Observe the country coding!

5. Code hydraulic unit.

6. Perform a function test. During the test drive, perform at least one ABS control operation, taking the road conditions into consideration. Read out fault memory. There must not be any stored faults.

OF MY 2003 (ALL MODELS) CHECKING STEERING ANGLE SENSOR Initialize steering-angle sensor

CAUTION: Increased risk of accident whenever power supply is interrupted. PSM does not function.

--> The steering-angle sensor must be initialized (taught) whenever the battery is disconnected.

NOTE:



The steering-angle sensor is integrated into the steering column switch and records the movements of the steering wheel (steering wheel angle) using light switches. The data is transmitted to the PSM control unit via the CAN bus.



During initialization, the steering-angle sensor learns its current position (straight-ahead position).



The steering-angle sensor must always be initialized if terminal 30 was interrupted (for example, battery replacement, undervoltage, steering column switch disconnected, relevant fuse removed)!



Calibration must be performed when working on or carrying out subsequent work on the chassis. This is described in detail in the next chapter. Refer to 45 60 05 Initializing and calibrating steering angle sensor - as of MY 2003 (All Models).



The calibration results in zero point balancing (exactly straight ahead).



The steering angle sensor is calibrated when first fitted and when any work has been carried out on steering and chassis. Examples of this would be opening the steering wiring and alterations to toe and camber.



Calibration includes initialization.

1. Turn wheels to straight-ahead position.

2. Start engine.

3. From the straight-ahead position, turn steering wheel approx. 20° to the left and 20° to the right (past straightahead position).

4. Drive the vehicle straight ahead for at least one second at a speed of over 4 km/h (2.5 mph).

Following successful initialization, the stored fault code is set to "Not present". The PSM indicator light in the instrument cluster goes out.

CAUTION: Increased risk of accident if the battery is disconnected after initializing and/or the relevant fuse is removed. There must be no undervoltage during the process.

--> Every time the battery is disconnected, the relevant fuse removed or an undervoltage is present, the steeringangle sensor must be initialized (taught).

ADJUSTING STEERING ANGLE SENSOR Calibrating steering-angle sensor

NOTE:



The steering-angle sensor must be recalibrated on the measuring platform following repairs to or work on the chassis/steering or if the steering-angle sensor/steering column switch/hydraulic unit is replaced.



In order to be able to calibrate the steering angle sensor correctly, the vehicle must be on the measuring platform, the wheel alignment values correct and the steering in the straight-ahead position.



The security code is displayed in the PIWIS tester under Menu >> PSM >> Actual values.

The steering angle sensor must be calibrated using the menu with the Porsche System Tester under the specified test conditions: 1. Switch on ignition.

2. Running gear set according to Porsche specifications.

3. Wheels in straight-ahead position and steering wheel horizontal.

4. In the straight-ahead position, the steering wheel must deviate by no more than ± 2.0° from the horizontal position (steering center position).

5. After successful calibration, the stored fault code is erased from the fault memory. The PSM indicator light in the instrument cluster goes out.

The sensed data is sent from the electronic unit -E- via the drive CAN bus to various systems (e.g., PSM, corner-sensitive headlight) for further processing. Replacement of the steering angle sensor requires the steering column switch to be removed.

If faults have been diagnosed on the steering-angle sensor, the steering column switch must be disassembled into the components -A, B, C, D, E- . See Fig. 12.

It is only permissible to replace the steering-angle sensor as the combination of the components contact unit for airbag -C- (spiral spring) and electronic unit -E- . See Fig. 12.

After installation or replacement of combination sensor, calibrate vehicle. 

4. Calibrate combination sensor. To do this connect the Piwis tester: Select >> Vehicle Cayenne >> System PSM >> Actual values menu >> Security code << (at end of list). Note the security code. Quit >> Actual values menu <<.

5. Select >> Calibration menu <<. Enter security code. Calibrate >> Lateral acceleration sensor << and >> Axial acceleration sensor << in sequence using the menu.

AIRBAG INTRODUCTION - AIRBAG Airbag system 0101 Cayenne as of model year 2003 NOTE:

The airbag triggering unit is part of the standard equipment of the Cayenne.

There are two types of triggering unit: A 'RoW variant' (Rest of World variant) and a 'non-RoW variant'. The diagnosis/troubleshooting instructions given below can be used for both variants. The difference, from the point of view of diagnostics, is that the fault codes 1228 and 1578 cannot occur for the airbag triggering unit in the 'non-RoW variant'. In addition, various menu and selection functions in the 9588 Porsche System Tester II are not used. The following components are not part of the component arrangement for the 'non-RoW variant': Airbag switch and indicator light (passenger's air-bag OFF display).

NOTE:

The airbag system of the Cayenne includes a system check, which runs in the background and is activated when the ignition is switched on. In comparison to other model ranges, the airbag warning light remains on after the system check is complete (only if the ignition is still on and the engine is not started) and only goes out again when the engine is started and no faults are detected in the airbag system check.

General instructions/safety instructions

The following points must be observed during vehicle diagnosis: After the battery is connected, volatile memories must be reprogrammed. In the case of radio coding and tuning, the customer must be informed of decoding and the deleted tuner memory.  After troubleshooting or repairs, erase the fault memory with the 9588 Porsche System Tester II and carry out a test drive.  After the test drive, read out the fault memory with the 9588 Porsche System Tester II again. 

69 AW SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR HANDLING AIRBAGS AND... - AS OF MY 2003 (ALL MODELS) with air-bag and belt tensioner.

WARNING: Danger of injury and damage to property as a result of incorrect handling of airbag units!

Please observe the following points: Inspection and assembly work must only be carried out by specialist staff!  After the battery is disconnected, assembly work or work on the vehicle with a hammer or similar tools must not be started until after a waiting period of 1 minute!  This is necessary in order to interrupt the power supply to the airbag system and to ensure it is not triggered accidentally!  Airbag units must be fitted immediately after being removed from their storage location!  Airbag units must never be left lying around unattended!  If work is interrupted, airbag units must immediately be locked away again!  Airbag units must not be allowed to come into contact with grease, oil, cleaning agents or similar substances!  Airbag units must not be exposed to temperatures above 90 °C!  Airbag units and control units which have fallen from a height of more than 0.5 m must not be installed!  Additional linings, stickers or similar must not be attached to the steering wheel or in the vicinity of the passenger's airbag!  Changes must not be made to the wiring or the components of the airbag system!  The battery must always be disconnected before starting straightening and welding work with an electrical welding unit! 

Please observe the following points: The airbag units are pyrotechnical items in hazard class T 1!  Handling, transport and storage of these units must conform to the explosives legislation!  The listed statutory requirements refer to the Federal Republic of Germany! 

The relevant valid regulations must be observed in all other countries!  The commencement of work with pyrotechnical items must be reported 14 days in advance to the Trade Supervisory Office (responsible authority)!  Airbag units must only be dispatched in transport packaging officially approved for that purpose!  Airbag units must not be transported with other hazardous goods!  Internally, they must always be transported in the luggage compartment or cargo hold of a vehicle using the transport packaging referred to above!  They must not be transported in the passenger's compartment!  Airbag units must be stored in accordance with the second ordinance of the explosives legislation!  This ordinance stipulates that small quantities of materials and items may be stored at certain locations without special storage approval!  According to the Explosives Storage Directive of August 1997, these quantities are 10 kg (net) max. in a work room and 100 kg (net) max. in a storage room in the case of Class T1 pyrotechnical items! 

WARNING: Danger of personal injury if the drive link test is carried out when the vehicle is in motion! 

Never carry out the drive link test when the vehicle is in motion!

The following conditions must be observed when carrying out the drive link test: 

The drive link test must always be carried out on a stationary vehicle in a workshop with sufficient commercially available tools! The driver's seat must then be partially removed in order to re-activate the cut-out relay. Only then can the engine be re-started (see warning note below).

WARNING: Danger of injury due to the risk of fire in the event of short circuits in the wiring harness or of emerging fluids when the cut-out relay is actuated (for disconnecting battery)!

The cut-out relay (for disconnecting battery) must only be actuated by trained and authorized staff.  Damage, abrasions or squashed wires in the wiring harness must be located and either repaired or replaced in accordance with Porsche 

guidelines!  Short circuits to B+, short circuits to ground and open circuits in the entire wiring harness must be eliminated and, if necessary, repaired or replaced in accordance with Porsche guidelines!  Mechanical components must not be damaged in any way that could cause locally emerging fluids to ignite in the event of a short circuit!

WARNING: Danger of injury as a result of malfunctions (loose contacts) in airbag modules when unplugging module connectors and belt tensioner plugs!

When installing and removing airbag modules and belt tensioners, the plug connections provided must be disconnected using an integrated short circuit bridge!  Never pull off plugs connected directly to airbag modules and belt tensioners!  Do not remove wiring harnesses from other vehicles in order to connect these to 'third-party' airbag modules or belt tensioners! 

WARNING: Danger of injury and damage due to unusual vehicle handling when plugs or components are disconnected!

Never disconnect plugs when the vehicle is in motion or drive the vehicle with plugs disconnected!  Drive only with all parts fully installed and connected! 

WARNING: Danger of injury if vehicle is driven with special tools in place (commercially available tools included)! 

Never drive with special tools or commercially available tools attached instead of the airbag units!

CAUTION: Danger of damage due to improper handling of batteries and control module plug connections!

Never disconnect battery terminals with engine running!  Never start engine unless battery terminal clamps are connected securely!  Never pull off or push on plug connections for the control units or other electronic components when the ignition is switched on!  Always disconnect the negative terminal of the battery and pull off all plug connections to the vehicle electrical system control unit when carrying out welding work on the vehicle! 

NOTE:

The airbag warning light in the instrument cluster lights up to indicate sporadic faults (loose contacts, etc.) in the airbag ignition circuits. The airbag warning light remains on even when the fault is no longer present. It can only be turned off by reading out the fault memory, eliminating the cause of the fault and then erasing the fault memory, provided there are no other faults in the system. This means that even faults that only occur briefly are reported to the driver and stored in the fault memory.

NOTE:

The wiring harness between the airbag triggering unit and the driver's airbag unit has a number of disconnection points, which must be considered as most likely causes of the fault. The following disconnection points must be checked for correct contacts, possible corrosion or damage with the battery disconnected for at least one minute before actually replacing the airbag triggering unit as a last resort: First disconnection point in front of spiral spring (behind top steering column switch)  Second disconnection point in steering wheel pod  Third disconnection point directly at driver's airbag unit (only inspect this visually - never disconnect plug! - see note below) 

NOTE:

Never disconnect plugs that are connected directly to airbag modules and belt tensioners because these have been connected at a defined contact pressure in order to prevent a malfunction due to the plug becoming loose during the life of the vehicle. The plug connections (mostly 3-pin) provided for this purpose must be disconnected using an integrated short-circuit bridge.

NOTE:

The wiring harness between the airbag triggering unit and the side airbags in the seats has a number of disconnection points, which must be considered as most likely causes of the fault. The following disconnection points must be checked for correct contacts, possible corrosion or damage with the battery disconnected for at least one minute before actually replacing the airbag triggering unit as a last resort: First disconnection point under seat area of driver's and passenger's seat (3-pin cut-off connection with short circuit bridge)  Second disconnection point between 3-pin cut-off connection and the side airbag (2-pin cut-off connection with short circuit bridge)  Third disconnection point directly at side airbag (only inspect this visually (this involves disassembling seat - should only be done in exceptional cases) - never disconnect plug! - see previous note) 

NOTE:

A period of 10 seconds is required to enable the triggering unit to identify all faults in the system. In order to guarantee that every possible fault source is checked during the vehicle test, the ignition must be switched on for at least 10 seconds.  The fault memory must be cleared following a fault in the airbag system and after it has been remedied.  The replacement of a component must be noted in the Guarantee and Maintenance booklet! To do this, attach the documentation number in a free panel intended for that purpose. The documentation number is attached to the replacement part as a tear-off sticker. 

If the fault memory is cleared, the ignition must be switched off and then on again in order to check the fault path. Only in this way is another self-test carried out.

The following components must be removed and replaced following an accident in which the airbag system was triggered: Contact unit  Triggered airbag unit(s)  Triggered belt tensioner unit(s) 

The triggering unit must be replaced after the airbag is triggered for the third time.

Fault code setting conditions

Fault codes can be set in several circumstances, e.g.: Battery disconnected  Plug connections disconnected  Faulty coding  Power failure  etc. 

In these circumstances, no fault is present in the system and the fault memory must be erased.

Troubleshooting procedure

Troubleshooting can only be performed when the fault is present. In other words, specific troubleshooting can only be performed in accordance with instructions (given under Diagnosis/troubleshooting for each fault code) if the entry has the status 'present' in the fault memory.

Diagnostic conditions are met  All plug connections and ground points of the affected current path are OK.  View the fault frequency counter in the 9588 Porsche System Tester II using the fault memory Info key [F8] under 'Extended fault memory' and try to reach conclusions about eliminating any loose contacts in the system 

NOTE:

The fault can only be identified if the requirements listed under 'Diagnostic conditions' are met. For this reason, the specified procedure must be observed after a fault is repaired:

1. Clear fault memory.

2. Satisfy the requirements listed under 'Diagnostic conditions'.

NOTE:

The 'possible causes of fault' that are responsible for the fault are listed here.

Please note that in certain circumstances further faults can be stored in the fault memory after troubleshooting (e.g. if plugs are disconnected). After carrying out repairs, read out the fault memory of all control modules and erase any faults.

Visual inspection: During troubleshooting, please check first that the affected pins on the airbag triggering unit plug connection are neither damaged nor corroded. The wiring and plugs of the affected components must also be checked for external damage and correct contact. Repair damaged or corroded pins if possible, otherwise replace affected pins. Repair or replace damaged wiring in accordance with Porsche guidelines.

In comparison to other model ranges, the airbag warning light remains on after the system check is complete (only if the ignition is still on and the engine is not started) and only goes out again when the engine is started and no faults are detected in the airbag system.

When the ignition (terminal 15) is switched on, a control phase is run in order to check the activation/deactivation of the passenger's air-bag ignition circuit, including the airbag switch and the indicator light (passenger's airbag OFF display). This control phase is evident by the fact that the indicator light lights up for approx. four seconds (but not when the airbag switch is OFF, i.e. the passenger's airbag is deactivated). If implausible statuses are detected in the passenger's airbag ignition circuit, the indicator light starts flashing and the airbag warning light may also come on. If such a situation arises, read out the fault memory and work through the diagnosis/troubleshooting instructions.

The airbag triggering unit includes a drive link test, which can be activated using the 9588 Porsche System Tester II. This involves carrying out the following functions: The central locking system unlocks all 5 doors.  The courtesy lights are switched on.  The warning light is switched on. 

For vehicles of model year '03 (control units with index 00): 

The cutoff relay is triggered (i.e. partial battery interruption present).

For vehicles with V8 engine and automatic transmission, model year '03 and '04: 

The vehicle engine is switched off (DME control unit interrupts ignition and fuel feed).

NOTE:

The ignition (terminal 15) can still be switched on again after this drive link test.  However, the engine cannot be started until the cutoff relay is deactivated again! (Only for vehicles of model year '03 (control units with index 00))  For vehicles with V8 engine and automatic transmission, model year '03 and '04: fault code P1266 and/or P1620 is triggered in the DME control unit! 

Procedure: 1. Connect battery charger (see "COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE BATTERY CHARGING DEVICE").

NOTE:

The following requirements must be met before the drive link test is carried out:  Selector level in position 'P' or 'N', or no gear selected.  Parking brake actuated.  Warning lights off.  All doors closed and locked.  Courtesy lights off.  For vehicles with V8 engine and automatic transmission, model year '03 and '04: Engine idling 

2. Using the 9588 Porsche System Tester II, select the menu item 'Drive link test' in the Airbag system.

3. Then press the [F8] 'Start' key.

4. Press [F8] 'Start' again.

NOTE:

The cutoff relay is triggered (i. e. partial battery interruption present).  The central locking system unlocks all 5 doors.  The courtesy lights are switched on.  The warning light is switched on.  For vehicles with V8 engine and automatic transmission, model year '03 and '04: The engine is switched off. 

5. Press the [>>] 'Continue' key.

6. Return to the menu by pressing [<<].

7. For vehicles with V8 engine and automatic transmission, model year '03 and '04: read out DME fault memory with the 9588 Porsche System Tester II and erase any faults recorded by the drive link test (see DRIVE LINK TEST and 24 70 19 REMOVING AND INSTALLING DME CONTROL MODULE AS OF MY 2003 (CAYENNE TIP, CAYENNE MAN, CAYENNE S TIP, CAYENNE S MAN, CAYENNE TURBO) , or 24 70 19 REMOVING AND INSTALLING DME CONTROL MODULE - AS OF MY 2004 (CAYENNE TIP, CAYENNE MAN) ).

Lock

The 'Lock' function serves to adjust the airbag system to suit the available components and the required data records, making the system fully functional.

WARNING: Danger of personal injury if airbag triggering unit is not locked.

The airbags cannot be triggered in the event of an accident/ triggering event.

Lock new airbag triggering units immediately after installation in the vehicle.  Only start the vehicle if the airbag triggering unit has been locked beforehand. 

An unlocked triggering unit can be locked using the menu item "Lock". If the airbag triggering unit is replaced, the new airbag triggering unit must be locked.

NOTE:

The airbag triggering unit is delivered from the Parts Service dealers in an unlocked state.  If an airbag triggering unit is unlocked, the airbag warning light flashes.

The airbag triggering unit must then be locked. 

A locked airbag triggering unit cannot be unlocked or locked again.

Procedure:

1. Connect battery charger (see "COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE BATTERY CHARGING DEVICE").

2. Using the 9588 Porsche System Tester II, select the menu item 'Lock'.

NOTE:

If the airbag triggering unit was already locked, the text 'Control unit already locked' appears.

3. Press [F8] 'Write' to start the locking procedure.

4. Check whether an 'Airbag Off switch' is installed.

5. Select the correct vehicle type 'without Airbag Off switch' or 'with Airbag Off switch' with the buttons ? and ? and confirm with the [>>] button.

6. Wait until the text 'Locking control unit!' appears and disappears again.

7. Switch off ignition.

8. Switch on ignition.

9. Press [<<] to return to the menu and erase the fault memory.

TEACH AWS When you replace the AWS control unit, the new AWS control unit must be taught or adapted for the airbag triggering unit.

Procedure:

1. Replace AWS control unit.

NOTE:

Never drive with special tools or commercially available tools attached instead of the airbag units.

The wiring harness between the airbag triggering unit and the driver's airbag unit has a number of disconnection points, which must be considered immediately as possible causes of the fault. The following disconnection points must be checked for correct contacts, possible corrosion or damage with ignition switched off before actually replacing the airbag triggering unit:

First disconnection point in front of angle spring (behind top steering column switch)  Second disconnection point in center of steering wheel  Third disconnection point directly at driver's airbag unit (only inspect this visually - never disconnect plug! - see note below) 

NOTE:

Never disconnect plugs that are connected directly to airbag modules and belt tensioners because these were connected with a defined contact pressure in order to prevent the plug from becoming loose, thereby preventing a malfunction during the life of the vehicle. The plug connections (mostly 3-pin) used for this must be disconnected using an integrated short circuit bridge.

When you connect the test tool 5056/C and then switch the ignition on and off, fault code 1587 is automatically detected for stage 2 because there is no airbag unit connected to the ignition circuit in stage 2. This fault code must also be deleted after the fault is repaired and should no longer occur when you switch the ignition on and off again. Otherwise, this fault code must be handled according to instructions.

Never drive with special tools or commercially available tools attached instead of the airbag units.

NOTE:

Never disconnect plugs that are connected directly to airbag modules and belt tensioners because these have been connected at a defined contact pressure in order to prevent a malfunction due to the plug becoming loose during the life of the vehicle. The plug connections (mostly 3-pin) provided for this purpose must be disconnected using an integrated short-circuit bridge.

NOTE:

The wiring harness between the airbag triggering unit and the side airbags in the seats has a number of disconnection points, which must be considered as most likely causes of the fault. The following disconnection points must be checked for correct contacts, possible corrosion or damage with ignition switched off before actually replacing the airbag triggering unit: First disconnection point under seat area of driver's and passenger's seat (3-pin disconnection point with short circuit bridge)  Second disconnection point between 3-pin cut-off connection and the side airbag (2-pin disconnection point with short circuit bridge)  Third disconnection point directly at side airbag (only inspect this visually (this involves disassembling seat - should only be done in exceptional cases) - never disconnect plug! - see previous note) 

FAULT CODE 1221 AIRBAG SENSOR (FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE) Conditions for diagnosis

Ignition on  Internal function test on airbag trigger unit 

Possible cause of fault

Implausible signal (incorrect airbag sensor installed)  Open circuit (with respect to wiring between airbag trigger unit and airbag sensor or airbag sensor itself)  Electrical fault in electric circuit (with respect to wiring between airbag trigger unit and airbag sensor; probably short circuit to positive or short circuit to ground in wiring)  Faulty (airbag sensor faulty)  Airbag trigger unit faulty 

NOTE:

The contact plugs on the wiring harness are identical for the six sensors which are installed. Only the retainers for mounting are different. The airbag sensors under the driver's seat and passenger seat have a threaded retainer but all the other sensors have only a non-threaded bush. It is therefore possible to confuse the sensors on the rear wheel arches with the sensors on the lock support. If these are mixed up accidentally, the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588 will display this fault code along with the fault type 'implausible signal'. It is therefore always important to ensure that the correct sensors are installed at the correct position. The main reason for this is that different levels of sensitivity are set for the different sensors.

DIAGNOSIS/TROUBLESHOOTING NOTE:

When the ignition (terminal 15) is switched on, a control phase is run in order to check the activation/deactivation of the passenger's air-bag ignition circuit, including the airbag switch and the indicator light (passenger's airbag OFF display). This control phase is evident by the fact that the indicator light lights up for approx. four seconds (but not when the airbag switch is OFF, i.e. the passenger's airbag is deactivated). If implausible statuses are detected in the passenger's airbag ignition circuit, the indicator light starts flashing and the airbag warning light may also come on. If such a situation arises, read out the fault memory and work through the diagnosis/troubleshooting instructions.

NOTE:

A battery voltage of between 11.4 and 14.5 V is required for the following troubleshooting procedure. This must be checked and provided, if necessary.

Voltages as well as components or fuses (input side) must be guaranteed on the vehicle electrical system.
