A five digit number, called the car series and body style designation number, identifies any car as to series and style.

Reading from left to right, the digits represent the following: The first digit indicates the General Motors Division.

The second and third digits are Fisher Body Shell Designation. The third digit also is used to designate the L-6 or V-8 engine (odd numbers indicate L-6 and even, V-8 engine).

The fourth and fifth digits are body style designation.

VEHICLE NUMBER PLATE

The 1970 vehicle identification number plate is located in the left upper instrument panel. The numbers are visible from the outside of the car. (Fig. 0-2) Each unit number is prefixed by a letter and six numbers and have designations as shown in Fig. 0-3.

ENGINE

The L-6 Engine has a DATE-CODE stamped on the right side of the engine block, directly to the rear of the distributor. (Fig. 0 4 ) The data code consists of a letter, four digits and two letters. The first letter stands for source identification. The first two digits show the month and the second two digits show the day the unit was built. The last two letters show 3

DIFFERENTIAL RATIOS The differential ratio code letters (1/4" high) are stamped on the right rear inboard side of the axle housing tube. (Fig. 0-10) Letters, for standard, Anti-Spin and final drive differentials, indicating corresponding ratio for each series are shown in chart.

FINAL DRIVE ASSEMBLY (Differential)

For continuous high speed operation (over 75 mph) increase tire inflation pressure 4 pounds per square inch over the recommended pressures up to a maximum of 32 pounds per square inch cold for 4 ply rating tires. Sustained speeds above 75 mph are not recommended when the 4 pounds per square inch adjustment would require pressures greater than 32 pounds per square inch.

Over inflation at light loads will have an adverse effect on the car ride and tire tread wear pattern. Under inflation will promote heat and abnormal wear.

When towing trailers, the allowable passenger and cargo load must be reduced by an amount equivalent to the trailer tongue load on the trailer hitch.

Vehicles with luggage racks do not have a load limit greater than specified in the vehicle load capacity chart.

TREAD WEAR INDICATORS

The original equipment tires incorporate built-in tread wear indicators to assist in determining when tires have been worn to the point of needing replacement. These indicators are molded into the bottom of the tread grooves and will appear as 1/2 inch wide bands when tire tread depth becomes 1/16 of an inch. When the indicators appear in two or more adjacent grooves, tire replacement due to tread wear is recommended.

TIRE INFORMATION When the car is driven a few miles, tires warm up causing pressure increase. If tire pressures are checked when tires are warm, they may be up to 6 pounds higher than the pressures shown on the chart.

TIRE ROTATION To equalize wear, it is recommended that the four road tires be rotated every 6,000 miles, see Fig. 0-12. It is not necessary to rotate the spare. Upon rotation, tire pressures must be adjusted (front and rear) in accordance with the recommendations in the tire inflation pressure table. Also keep tires balanced, the front wheels aligned, and periodically examine tires for unusual wear.

TOWING DATA (WITH IGNITION KEY) Toronado It is recommended that the car be towed with the front wheels off the ground. However, the car can be towed with the rear wheels off the ground if damage in the rear wheel area will not permit such towing. In this event, the car may be towed with the rear wheels off the ground by placing the selector lever in the "N" (neutral) position and driving at speeds not to exceed 35 mph for distances up to 50 miles.

When towing with the front wheels off the ground, the sling should be 4 feet wide so the straps contact the bumper at the jacking points. A 4x4 about 5 feet long is used between frame and sling so that lower valance panel is not damaged.

If it becomes necessary to tow or winch from the rear, the hooks should be positioned just inboard of rebound bumper.

Do not install towing hooks any further inboard than shown because of possible damage to axle and not over emergency brake cables which are just in front of axle in this area. (Fig. 0-14.)

ALL OTHERS

Except when the transmission, propeller shaft or rear axle has become damaged or when the transmission is low on fluid, the car may be towed with the selector lever in the 'kN" (Neutral) position at speeds up to 35 mph, for distances up to 50 miles. For higher speeds, longer distances, or if the transmission has become damaged or has lost fluid, it is recommended that the car be towed with the rear wheels off the ground or the propeller shaft disconnected at the differential and secured to the frame or exhaust pipe. If the car is towed with the rear wheels off the ground, the steering wheel should be centered and lashed to the window division channel or held in centered position with a steering clamp. The car should not be lifted more than six inches off the ground or towed at speeds above 35 mph. When towing with the wheels off the ground, it is recommended that a 4 " x 4 " timber be located beneath the lower edges of the bumper to prevent lift chains damaging the lower panel.

TOWING DATA (Without Ignition Key)

In the case of abandoned or illegally parked and locked

vehicles, additional steps preparatory to towing may be necessary:

TORONADO

The car can be towed on the rear wheels at any time provided the parking brake is released and there is no damage to the rear wheels or rear suspension.

ALL OTHER SERIES

If the front wheels are in the straight ahead position, the car may be lifted at the rear and towed in the conventional manner. A steering wheel clamp should always be used when towing on the front wheels.

If the front wheels are locked in other than the straight ahead position and towing on the front wheels would result in the car tracking to the side of the wrecker, the rear wheels should be placed in a dolly and the car towed with the front end raised.

As an alternative, the car can be towed with the rear wheels on the ground by disconnecting the propeller shaft at the differential and wiring it to the frame. The parking brake must also be released.

PERIODIC MAINTENANCE BATTERY

Check battery liquid level at each engine oil change interval or once a month whichever occurs first or more often, when refueling in hot weather. Level should reach the bottom of the split ring in the vent well. DO NOT OVERFILL. Clean top of battery and terminals every 12,000 miles and check tightness of battery hold-down bolt. To properly clean battery: A. Make sure vent plugs are closed tight.

B. Remove battery cables from battery.

C. Clean battery with a diluted ammonia or soda solution.

When the solution stops foaming, rinse with clear water.

D. Clean battery cable clamps with diluted ammonia or soda and rinse with clear water. Apply a thin coating of petrolatum to terminals and clamps, after installing clamps.

SERVICE BRAKES

The fluid level in the master cylinder located at the left rear side of the engine compartment should be checked at each engine oil chnage interval. If necessary to add fluid, use Brake Fluid equivalent to Supreme No. 11. On all standard and power brakes, the fluid level must be maintained at 1/4" below the top of both sections of the reservoir, at the rear.

Prevent entry of dirt into the master cylinder. See Periodic Maintenance Chart for checking brake warning light.

Brake linings should be periodically inspected for wear.

The frequency of this inspection depends upon driving conditions such as traffic or terrain, and also the driving techniques of individual owners.

BODY LUBRICATION POINTS HOOD LATCH

Lubricate the latch pilot bolts and latch locking plate with a thin film of lubriplate or equivalent. Use a light oil for pivot points.

HOOD HINGES

AT EVERY ENGINE OIL CHANGE engine oil should be used to lubricate the hood hinges. Do not allow the oil to drop on fenders or other exposed painted surfaces.

GAS TANK FILLER DOOR HINGE

Clean area of dirt and old lubricant. Apply a few drops of engine oil to friction points of door hinge. Work door several times and wipe off excess lubricant.

WINDSHIELD WIPER TRANSMISSION BEARING

Lubricate windshield wiper transmission bearing with engine oil every 24,000 miles.

DOOR LOCK FORK BOLT

Wipe off dirt and apply a thin coat of stick-type lubricant to top surface of lock bolt striker teeth indicated in Fig. 0-17. After lubrication, close door several times and remove excess lubricant along the side edge of teeth.

REAR DOOR HINGE ASSEMBLY

Wipe off dirt and apply a thin coat of white lithium soap grease such as or equivalent to Auto-Lube "A" or SprayLube "A" as indicated in Fig. 0-20. Open and close door several times to insure that the lubricant has worked in effectively.

It is important that the contact surfaces of the detent roller and detent lever remain free of lubricant. Lubrication at these points indicated 1 in Fig. 0-18, would result in a sliding action instead of the desired rolling action.

DOOR JAMB SWITCH

Apply a thin coat of Lubriplate or equivalent to end surface of switch plunger.

Lubricate the torque rod on the lower hinge assembly with molybdenum disulphide (Fiske Bros. 475-10DS or equ ivalent) at the points indicated. (Fig. 0-19) Open and close door several times to assure that the lubricant has worked in effectively.

Wipe off dirt and apply a thin coat of white lithium soap grease such as or equivalent to Auto-Lube "A" or SprayLube "A" to the contact surface of the lock bolt. (Fig. 0-21).

On tail gate locks, use same lubricant to the bolt at the Strieker contact areas. Actuate the lock mechanism several times and than remove excess lubricant.

Apply a small amount of low temperature lubricant (Drip-less oil or equivalent) to Jfre hinge as shown in Fig. 0-23. Open and close tailgate several times and remove excess lubricant.

TAILGATE HINGE (Dual Acting Tailgate)

Apply white lithium soap grease such as or equivalent to Auto-Lube "A" or Spray-Lube "A" to the circumference of the tailgate torque rod which passes througli the nylon guide as indicated in Fig. 0-22. Open and close tailgate several times to assure smooth operation and remove excess lubricant.

1. With dual-acting tailgate in gate position, apply a low temperature lubricant (dripless oil or equivalent) sparingly through the two oil holes provided, and onto the pivot pin for the hold-open feature on the left hinge assembly, point 3 in Fig. 0-25 and apply a coating of wheel bearing lubricant or equivalent to the striker pin, point 2 in Fig. 0-24 on the right hinge assembly.

2. Open and close tailgate several times.

3. Remove excess lubricant.

TAILGATE LOCK FORK BOLT (Right and left) - (Station Wagon Styles with Dual Acting Tailgate)

1. With tailgate in gate position, clean surface of right and left fork bolt.

2. Apply a thin coat of grease stick lubricant (Doorease or equivalent) to the areas indicated by point 1 in Fig. 0-24 (Right Side Shown, and Fig. 0-25 Left Side Similar).

3. Open and close tailgate (in gate position) several times.

4. Remove excess lubricant.

INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPARTMENT DOOR HINGE

Wipe off dirt and apply a sparing amount of dripless oil to hinge frictional points. Operate door several times and wipe off excess lubricant.

TAILGATE TORQUE ROD (Dual Acting Tailgate)

1. Open in gate position, and apply white lithium soap grease such as or equivalent to Auto Lube "A" or spray lube "A" to contact surfaces of the torque rod to torque rod retainer (on bottom of tailgate), torque rod to torque rod assist link, and torque rod assist link to assist link retainer (on back body pillar), as indicated by points 2 in Fig. 0-25.

2. Open and close tailgate several times to assure smooth operation.

3. Remove excess lubricant.

REAR COMPARTMENT HINGES

Apply white lithium soap grease such as or equivalent to Auto-Lube "A" or Spray-Lube "A" to the friction areas of the rear compartment lid hinge. (Fig. 0-26) Open and close lid several times and wipe off excess lubricant.

REAR COMPARTMENT AND TAILGATE LOCK CYLINDERS

A small quantity of lock lubricant occasionally applied to the lock cylinders will prevent sticking.

At each engine oil change interval, all friction and bearing surfaces in the linkage for the throttle, clutch and parking brake should be lubricated with SAE 10W-30 oil. Ball and socket in the throttle linkage should be lubricated with Seal Lubricant, No. 1050169 or equivalent whenever they are disassembled.

SPEEDOMETER & CRUISE CONTROL CABLE Lubricate cables every 24 months. Apply a coating of speedometer cable grease such asA.C. ST640 or A. C. 1518 or equivalent to the lower two-thirds of cable only.

POWER STEERING GEAR AND PUMP Check lubricant level in pump at each oil change interval. Maintain lubricant level with power steering fluid such as No. 1050017, or if adding less than a pint, Dexron type automatic transmission fluid can be used.

Gear lubrication is provided by oil supplied by the pump.

AIR CLEANER (All Engines) The air cleaner has a disposable air filter element. Soft plastic flanges on the element seal the air cleaner body and cover. All air will pass through the filter element.

Replace air filter element every 24 months under normal conditions, and more frequently under dusty conditions. Do not attempt to service the element. The filter element should be replaced as follows: A. Remove air cleaner assembly to prevent dirt from falling into carburetor.

B. Remove filter element from air cleaner.

C. Clean dust and dirt from metal surfaces of air cleaner body and install new filter element.

D. I nstall air cleaner body on carburetor.1 Be sure the cleaner to carburetor gasket is in place, then install the element and cover.

CRANKCASE VENTILATION FILTER Clean and re-oil every time a new engine oil filter is installed. Remove filter located on right valve cover on all V-8s except Toronado, which is located on left valve cover. The L-6 filter is located in the air cleaner. Wash filter in kerosene and re-oil with SAE 10W-30 oil.

Also clean connecting pipe.

Once a year (or at the oil change period nearest to this interval) replace the ventilation valve. The rest of the system should be serviced at this interval by washing the parts in kerosene and blowing out the hoses and/or pipes with compressed air.

Every 24 months, the system should be completely drained and flushed. When refilling, use enough "year around" Ethylene-Glycol, No. 389200 or equivalent Ethylene Glycol coolant labeled as meeting specification GM 1899, to insure at least -20°F. protection. (On refill of A.C. or H.D. cooling only, use Anti-foam Part No. 1050531 or equivalent.)

Alcohol base coolants or plain water will not provide adequate engine cooling.

The radiator cap should be thoroughly washed every 12 months with clean water to remove any foreign matter, particularly from the vent valve.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION

CARBURETOR

CRANKCASE VENTILATION VALVE

Periodic or seasonal changes of lubricant are not recommended. The lubricant level should be checked at each engine oil change interval.

Use lubricant #1051066 or equivalent. Always clean dirt from around plug before removing.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION Check fluid level at each engine oil change. Change fluid every 24 months or 24,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Includes: Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 wash screen Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 install new strainer Under heavy duty operating conditions or excessive stop and go driving, perform the above every 12,000 miles.

Use only automatic transmission fluids identified with the letters DEXRON on the container. This fluid has been especially formulated and tested for use in automatic transmissions. This automatic transmission fluid is also preferred for use in all pre 1970 automatic transmissions.

Type A, Suffix A fluids identified by the mark "AQ-ATF" and a number followed by the suffix letter A (AQ-ATF-... A) are satisfactory for use in pre 1968 automatic transmissions.

For draining and refilling or checking and adding fluid, refer to the specific transmission, Section 7.

COOLING SYSTEM ON ALL SERIES - Keep coolant level to "Fill Cold" mark on radiator.

Check only when cool. The system should be periodically inspected for leaks. It is designed to use a highly inhibited "year around" EthyleneGlycol solution both summer and winter.

Change fuel inlet filter every 12 months.

DIFFERENTIAL AND FINAL DRIVE Check lubricant level at each engine oil change period.

Conventional Maintain lubricant level with No. 1050081. or SAE 90 Multi-Purpose Gear Lubricant which meets requirements of MIL-L-2105B. Final Drive Maintain fluid level with 1050081 or equivalent.

Anti-Spin Maintain lubricant level with No. 1051022, or equivalent.

Use of other than the above mentioned type of lubricant in the AntiSpin differential may cause chatter. If the wrong type of lubricant is used in the Anti-Spin, it will require draining the differential and i n stalling the recommended lubricant. It may be necessary to drive AntiSpin equipped cars for distances of 50 miles or more to allow the new lubricant to work through the units before the chatter will disappear.

Always clean dirt from around plug opening before removing the filler plug.

Trailer hauling and break-in period operations have been found to create excessive axle lubricant temperatures. This results in depletion of the axle lubricant additives.

To alleviate this condition, the following is recommended: Lubrication Anti-Spin Differential - Periodic or seasonal changes are not recommended except under heavy duty operations such as trailer hauling. For heavy duty operations, lubricant replacement in the anti-spin differential is recommended every 12,000 miles.

All Series PERIODIC MAINTENANCE

Axle Break-In Period In addition to the above, it is recommended the car be driven at least 500 miles prior to hauling a trailer below a gross weight of 2,000 lbs. and 1,000 miles for trailers in excess of 2,000 lbs. gross weight.

NOTE: When changing oil, consider the anticipated temperatures for the next 4 months. SAE 5W and 5W-20 oils are not recommended for sustained high speed driving. SAE 30 oils may be used at temperatures above 60°F.

Final Drive - Toronado

OIL LEVEL

For sustained high speed driving or trailer hauling it is recommended the fluid be changed every 24,000 miles.

ENGINE OIL CHANGE INTERVAL Change engine oil every 4 months. If more than 24,000 miles are driven per year, change oil at 6,000 mile intervals when this occurs in less than 4 months. This interval applies to the initial change as well as subsequent oil changes. The oil change interval is based on the use of oils that meet requirements indicated below, under "ENGINE OIL RECOMMENDATIONS". Excessive mileage or time between oil change intervals will result in serious reductions of engine life and will void the warranty.

Under adverse or heavy-duty operations such as dusty conditions, trailer hauling, extensive idling, numerous short trips of 10 miles or less, or prolonged operation at sub-zero temperatures, change engine oil every 2 months or at three thousand mile intervals, whichever occurs first.

Use only "first line" oils which, according to the label on the can, are (1) intended for service MS, and (2) pass car makers' tests (including General Motors Standard GM 6041-M). The majority of the suitable oils currently available are multi-viscosity. Non-detergent and other low quality oils are specifically not recommended. The use of proper engine oils and oil change intervals are the best assurance of continued reliability and performance from the Oldsmobile engine.

The use of "break-in" oils, "tune-up" compounds, "friction-reducing" compounds, etc., are not recommended. However, there are additive supplements available that can be helpful under certain conditions.

For example, if higher detergency is required to reduce varnish and sludge deposits, a thoroughly tested and approved concentrate—High Detergency Concentrate—is available.

RECOMMENDED VISCOSITY The proper viscosity helps assure good cold and hot starting by reducing friction and thus increasing cranking speed.

OIL FILTER The full flow oil filter filters 100% of the oil delivered by the pump.

Replace oil filter at first oil change and every second oil change thereafter. Replace oil filter as follows: A. Loosen filter with wrench, then remove and discard filter.

B. Clean out filter body casting.

C. With new seal seated on face of new filter, install filter and tighten to 17 ft. lbs.

D. Add oil, start engine and check for leaks.

The engine oil dip stick located on the left side of the engine, is marked "Full" and "Add". The oil level should be maintained neither going above the "Full" line nor under the "Add" line. The oil level should be checked at everv refueling and oil added to maintain the proper level.

Check bulb and switch at 24 month intervals and at time of major brake work or any time pedal travel is excessive.

1. Determine if bulb is functioning by depressing parking brake.

2. Make sure both master cylinder reservoirs are full (within 1/4" of top).

3. Open one rear wheel cylinder bleed screw.

4. Depress brake pedal and hold it down. Light should come on, if not, correct trouble (switch or wiring).

5. While holding pedal down,close bleed screw. Refill master cylinders.

BRAKE SERVICES Brake lining wear will vary depending upon driving conditions and driving habits of each individual driver. Brake linings, as well as the other internal brake components at each wheel (such as drums, wheel cylinders, etc.) should be checked at least every 12,000 miles or more often if driving conditions and habits result in frequent brake application. Parking brake adjustment should be checked whenever brake linings are checked, and front wheel bearings (rear on Toronado) should be lubricated whenever brake drums are removed. Brake lines and brake hoses should be checked for proper attachment, chafing, deterioration and leaks.

BRAKE LINES AND HOSES The brake system should be checked visually each time the car is lubricated. When the car is raised on a lift for lubrication, brake lines, hoses, and cables should be inspected for proper attachment, leaks, cracks, chafing, deterioration, etc.

The brake hoses should be carefully inspected for cracks in the rubber cover (360° around) at either end of the hose near the fittings by flexing the hose while inspecting it. Adequate lighting and a mirror are essential tools for a good inspection. This inspection is made easier by steering the wheels to a full turn and/or removing the front wheels.

If any cracks, chafing, or leaks of the brake hose are detected, the brake hose should be replaced.

WHEEL ALIGNMENT The need for these services are determined by operating conditions such as hitting chuck holes and curbs, rapid starts and stops, tire skidding, etc. Wheel alignment and balancing service contribute to longer tire life and better vehicle handling. Refer to Section 10 for diagnosis and correction of tire wear and handling difficulties.

EMISSION CONTROL A check of the items affecting vehicle emission control at the first oil change (4 months or 6,000 miles, whichever occurs first) is important to control hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions within levels established by government standards and thus reduce air pollution.

This check involves the adjustment of engine idle speed, ignition timing, idle fuel mixture, and an operational check of the Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve (PCV) and related parts. Climatic conditions, type of operation, wear and contamination can affect these engine adjustments and proper functioning of the PCV valve. Checking for proper operation will not only contribute to the control of exhaust and engine emissions, but will improve performance and economy. Subsequent checks should be made at the 12-month or 12,000 mile interval, whichever occurs first, and every 12 months or 12,000 miles thereafter.

ENGINE TUNE-UP AND ENGINE ELECTRICAL CHECKS

CAPACITIES

Fuel and electrical systems are subject to wear and contamination and require periodic cleaning and adjustments to maintain maximum economy and performance. These same factors which have an important effect in the control of air pollution are included in engine tune-ups which are recommended at one year or 12,000 mile intervals.

BELT ADJUSTMENTS To assure proper performance of belt-driven engine components, all belts should be checked and adjusted during engine tune-up with BT- 7002-3.

AIR CONDITIONER Annual maintenance is necessary to assure proper performance. ing of refrigerant may be necessary from time to time.

BATTERY It is important that the battery receive the following care: 1. Check the fluid level in each cell at each engine oil change or once each month, whichever occurs f i r s t , and more often in hot weather.

If low, add distilled water to bring the level to the bottom of the split ring in the cell filler well. Do not overfill and never add any substance to the fluid except colorless, odorless drinking or distilled water.

2. Keep the battery, battery cable clamps, and battery hold-down bracket clean. Cleaning should be done every 1? months. Use a brush and a solution of ammonia and water or baking soda and water. Flush off with clear water. After cleaning, apply petroleum jelly or petrolatum to battery cable clamps and terminals to retard corrosion.

CLUTCH PEDAL ADJUSTMENT The pedal should be adjusted at each tune-up so that it has 3/4" to 1' free travel.

EXHAUST SYSTEM Each time' the vehicle is raised for lubrication or oil change service, the complete exhaust system and adjacent body areas should be inspected for broken, damaged, mispositioned parts, deterioration, open seams, loose connections or plugged drain holes which could permit exhaust fumes to seep into the passenger compartment. Exhaust system leaks may sometimes be indicated by excessive under-car noise or the smell of exhaust fumes inside the car. Leaks may also be indicated by "smoke" coming from under the car after starting, particularly on a cold day.

Exhaust system pipes and resonators rearward of the mufflers should be replaced whenever a new muffler is installed.

TIRES AND WHEELS Tires will wear under normal use ajid require replacement periodically throughout the life of the car. Original equipment tires incorporate b u i l t - i n tread wear indicators to assist in determining when tires have been worn to the extent that replacement is needed. Whenever the car is on the hoist for service, check tires for excessive wear, cuts, nails, etc. (See that all wheel nuts are tight, and that each wheel is r u n n i n g true (no wobble, as would occur with bent wheels.)

EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM (CALIFORNIA CARS ONLY) The Evaporative Control System is effective for the life of the car and requires only periodic canister filter servicing.

Every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever occurs first, (more often under dusty conditions) the filter in the base of the canister must be replaced and the canister inspected for damage. This servicing is required for proper system performance.

If the fuel tank cap should become lost, damaged or otherwise require replacement, use only the specified cap.

Air enters the ventilation and heater system at the cowl vent grille travels through the plenum chamber and into the cowl air chamber. Air can now be directed into the passenger compartment by opening the right and left side cowl doors or by opening the upper level vent doors on the right and left side of instrument panel. The doors are opened by manual control cables.

The heater control lever is in a single control unit located on the instrument panel on the left side of the steering column. The control also contains the blower speed switch and the temperature control slide lever.

A water valve is used in the heater system on A/C equipped cars only. A calibrated nipple is used to reduce coolant pressure in the heater core on non A/C cars.

VENTILATION (Figs. 1-5 and 1-5A)

On cars equipped with dual vent controls outside air may be admitted to the passenger compartment through outlets in the instrument panel independently from the cowl side panel outlets. For upper level ventilation, pull the upper vent con-

trol knobs located in the cowl side panel. The louvered outlets directly above the control knobs are adjustable to direct air to the right or left. The lower vent knobs control the amount of air flow through the two outlets in the cowl side panels for lower level ventilation. Both upper and lower level ventilation may be obtained simultaneously or separately.

HEAT Sliding the lever to the heat position—Outside air is drawn through cowl air intake grille into the ventilation duct and into the heater blower and air inlet assembly.

The heater blower then forces a portion of the outside air through the heater core and into the ducting system. The remaining air is forced directly into the ducting system.

To obtain the desired discharge air temperature, the heated air then mixes with the unheated air in the necessary proportions.

The temperature lever operates the temperature door which controls the temperature of the discharged air by regulating the mixing of heated and unheated air. In the COOL position, the air flow from the heater core is completely blocked. As the lever is moved to WARM, the temperature door opens admitting heated air into the ducting and progressively decreases the amount of unheated air. In the MAX. WARM position, the flow of unheated air is completely blocked directing all the air through the heater core, for maximum heating.

ADJUSTMENTS Temperature Control Cable

The cable is connected to a cam lock device that assures positive closing of the temperature door. The cable must be adjusted so there is 1/16 to 1/8 control lever spring back

Adjustment of the air inlet door is provided at the valve end of the control cable. To adjust, place cable in clip so as to provide 1/8 spring back with valve fully closed.

1. Loosen door sill plate.

2. Remove cowl vent grille.

3. Remove the air inlet valve to cowl attaching screws.

4. Disconnect upper level control cable at valve.

5. Remove trim pad and valve assembly.

To install apply a 3/16 bead of sealer on back surface of trim panel that contacts vent duct and reverse removal procedure.

For left side, parking brake assembly must be removed.

When removing parking brake assembly, apply parking brake, clamp the cable with vise grip pliers at the floor pan and release parking brake. This will give enough slack to cable so it can be removed from parking brake assembly without disturbing the adjustment.

1 Remove instrument cluster pad and bezel upper and lower retaining screws from the front of the pad, then remove the pad and bezel assembly.

2. Remove (2) left outlet retaining screws and then the outlet.

3. Remove the steering column support cap.

4. Loosen steering column attaching nuts and remove shift indicator needle.

5. Disconnect headlamp switch from IP (do not remove wires).

6. Remove (3) IP to dash attaching screws from above the instrument cluster.

7. Pull forward on IP to expose L.H. duct attaching screw in upper left hand corner and remove screw.

8. Hold IP away from dash to obtain clearance. Remove duct.

9. Remove (2) L.H. adapter attaching screws through outlet opening to remove adapter.

To install, reverse removal procedure.

Right Side

1. Remove glove box attaching screws and remove glove box.

2. Remove outlet (2 screws through front).

3. Remove two screws from the rear of adapter and remove adapter.

4. Remove duct retaining screw through side of duct air valve and remove duct.

To install reverse removal procedure.

To install reverse the removal procedure. Be sure to position a bead of sealer on the heater inlet as shown in Fig. 1-6.

HEATER CASE AND CORE Remove and Install (Figs. 1-6 and 1-7)

1. Remove glove box.

2. Disconnect wiring, vacuum lines and defroster hoses from heater case.

3. Drain radiator below heater level, disconnect heater hoses. (Fig. 1-8).

4. Remove the blower assembly attaching screws and nuts.

5. From inside the car, remove the heater case.

6. Remove the heater core from the case.

To install, reverse the removal procedure applying sealer as shown in Fig. 1-6.

HEATER CONTROL Remove and Install (Fig. 1-9)

1. Remove the attaching nuts and remove control from the rear of instument panel.

2. Disconnect all vacuum lines and wiring.

3. Disconnect temperature valve control cable.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Refer to schematic diagram (Fig. 1-10) for proper installation of hoses. Wiring INSULATOR - B U H T O L H . INSULATOR

BLOWER ASSEMBLY Remove and install (Fig. 1-6)

1. Disconnect blower feed wire.

2. Remove fender filler panel bolts and move filler panel forward and inboard.

3. Remove blower assy, attaching nuts and screws.

4. Push heater case studs back until studs do not protrude through dash.

5. Push down on inner fender panel and remove blower assembly.

6. Remove blower motor attaching screws and remove blower motor. (Fig. 1-6)

Diagnosis (Fig. 1-10) Blower Inoperative

Disconnect blower wire and check for battery voltage at wire connector (IGN. in ACC. position). Also disconnect capacitor lead and check for battery voltage at harness connector. If voltage is only available at harness connector, replace the capacitor.

Capacitor can be checked for continuity on or off the car Connect self powered test light to each lead. Light should come on.

Noise in AM-FM Radio

1. Make sure capacitor is grounded through the attaching screw.

2 Disconnect capacitor from blower and harness. Connect condenser tester to either capacitor wire and the ground

screw. Capacitor should be .25 mfd ± .05 mfd. (Same as ignition condenser test.)

HEATER BLOWER RESISTOR Remove and Install

The heater resistor is mounted on the heater case with two sheet metal screws. To remove, disconnect wiring connector and remove attaching screws.

To install resistor, reverse removal procedure.

VACUUM CHECK VALVE

A vacuum check valve is located in the vacuum source line in the engine compartment, and retains a vacuum supply to operate the vacuum diaphragms. (Fig. 1-10)

DESCRIPTION (Figs. 1-12 and 1-13)

VENTILATION (Without Air Conditioning)

Air is supplied to the heater through the air intake grille and enters the air inlet assembly where air flow is controlled by three different doors.

The heater operates on outside air only and does not have a water valve to control water circulation. Air passing through the core receives maximum heat at all times.

Heater operation is controlled by the air control lever and the temperature control lever. The air control lever operates both the air door and defroster door by use of two bowden cables. The position of the air control lever will determine if the air will be directed to the heater outlet or defroster ducts. The temperature control lever operates the temperature door by the use of a bowden cable. The temperature control lever can be adjusted so that the desired amount of air can be directed through the heater core. The air control lever must be in either HEAT or DEFROST position when

1. Disconnect the wiring connectors and pull out lamp socket.

2. Remove the spring nuts retaining the cables to the control levers.

3. Remove the three screws securing the cables to the control.

4. Remove the three screws securing control to instrument panel and remove control assembly.

1. Position control assembly to instrument panel and retain with the three screws.

2. Position the ends of the cables over the control levers and retain with the spring nuts.

3. Retain the cables to the control.

4. Install lamp socket and connect the two connectors.

If the control only is removed, it should not be necessary to adjust the cables. When the cables are properly adjusted, the levers should have 1/8" clearance when

moved to the extreme left position. Cable adjustment is provided on the heater case end of the cable.

FAN SWITCH (Fig. 1-15) Remove

1. Loosen the set screw retaining the switch knob and remove the knob.

2. Disconnect the two wiring connectors.

3. Remove the screw holding the switch to the heater control and remove the switch.

Install

1. Position the switch to the heater control assembly and install the retaining screw.

2 Connect the two wiring connectors.

3 Observe the flat on the switch shaft and install the knob so that the set screw contacts the flat.

RESISTOR

The resistor can be removed by disconnecting the harness and removing the two attaching screws. To install, position the resistor on the heater case shown in Fig. 1-16 and retain with the two screws and connect wiring.

ADJUSTMENTS

The temperature cable and air cable assembly is provided with a turnbuckle on the heater end of the cables. To adjust either of the cables, it is only necessary to adjust the turnbuckle in the necessary direction to obtain 1/8" clearance between the levers and the control assembly.

Defroster Cable

The defroster cable is not adjustable.

Temperature Cable

With temperature door fully closed and the control in the "cool" position, adjust cable turnbuckle for 1/8" clearance between lever and control assembly.

Air Cable

With air valve control cable installed and with air door fully closed in " o f f position, adjust cable turnbuckle for 1/8" clearance between lever and control assembly.

BLOWER MOTOR AND AIR INLET ASSEMBLY (Fig. 1-18)

1. Remove the right front fender filler panel. Refer to Sheet Metal Section 11.

2. Disconnect blower motor wiring.

3 Remove the five nuts and two screws securing inlet assembly to dash.

4. Disengage the inlet assembly from the studs and remove from the car. The blower motor can be removed from the inlet assembly by removing the attaching screws. The fan is secured to the motor shaft by a nut and lockwasher.

To install reverse removal procedure.

CORE ASSEMBLY

The heater core is located in and attached to the heater case. To remove the core, drain radiator, disconnect heater hoses and remove the five attaching nuts.

To remove the right lower attaching nut, it will be necessary to disconnect the right fender at the bottom and block away from body then remove retaining nut through this opening.

HEATER GENERAL DESCRIPTION (Fig. 1-26)

Air enters the ventilation and heater system at the cowl vent grille, travels through the plenum chamber and into the cowl air chamber. Air can now be directed into the passenger compartment by opening the right and left side cowl doors

or by opening the heater inlet door. The doors are operated by vacuum diaphragms, actuated by pushbuttons in one direction and closed by spring force in the other direction.

The ventilation and heater control pushbuttons are in a single control unit located in the instrument panel on the left side of the steering column. The control also contains the blower speed switch and the temperature control slide lever.

OPERATION Ventilation

When the MIN button is depressed the outside air and forced ventilation valve diaphragms are vented. This allows spring force to open the outside air door and move the forced ventilation valve to allow air to flow into the passenger compartment through the vent outlets in the instrument panel. Air velocity is controlled by the blower speed switch.

When the MED button is depressed, the operation is the same as when the MIN button is depressed, however the left cowl air inlet valve is also opened. Air enters the passenger compartment through the vent outlets in the instrument panel and through the left cowl air inlet.

Air velocity through the vent outlets, in the instrument panel, is controlled by the blower speed switch. Air velocity from the left cowl air inlet is controlled by forward motion of the car only.

When the MAX button is depressed, the operation is the same as when the MED button is depressed, however the right cowl inlet valve is also opened. Air enters the passenger compartment through the vent outlets in the instrument panel and through the right and left cowl air inlets.

Air velocity through the vent outlets, in the instrument panel, is controlled by the blower speed switch. Air velocity from the left and right cowl air inlets is controlled by forward motion of the car only.

Heater

When the HEAT button is depressed, vacuum is applied to the defroster and the forced ventilation valve diaphragms.

This moves the defroster door to allow* approximately 80% of the air to flow into the heater case and 20% to flow onto the windshield. The forced ventilation valve is moved to seal off air to the vent outlets in the instrument panel.

Outside air is drawn through the cowl air intake grille and into the heater blower and air inlet assembly. The heater blower then forces a portion of the outside air through the heater core and into the ducting system. The remaining air is forced directly into the ducting system. To obtain the desired discharge air temperature, the heater air then mixes with the unheated air in the necessary proportions.

The temperature lever operates the temperature door which controls the temperature of the discharged air by regulating the mixing of heated and unheated air. In the full left position, the flow from the heater core is completely blocked. As the lever is moved to the right, the temperature door opens, allowing more air to flow through the core and progressively decreases the amount of unheated air. In the extreme right position, the flow of unheated air is completely blocked directing all the air through the heat core, for maximum heating.

When the DEF button is depressed, the operation is the same as when the HEAT button is depressed, however the defroster diaphragm is vented and the spring moves the valve to allow approximately 80% of the air to flow onto the windshield and 20% to flow out of the heater outlets.

Rate of air flow on HEAT and DEF can be controlled by the blower speed switch.

under the hood. To adjust hold temperature door closed at heater case and adjust turnbuckle on cable to obtain 1/8" springback of control lever from end of slot in heater control.

Air Inlet Door

Adjustment of the air inlet door and diaphragm is provided for at the diaphragm (Fig. 1 -28).

1. With the air inlet body removed, loosen set screw.

2. Pull diaphragm lever to its extreme stop, then push back 1/16".

3. While holding door closed, tighten set screw.

HEATER ASSEMBLY Remove and Install (Fig. 1-29)

1. Disconnect blower feed and resistor wiring.

2. Disconnect vacuum hoses from the air inlet and forced vent diaphragms.

3. Disconnect temperature cable from temperature door lever.

4. Disconnect heater hoses. Keep open ends of hoses above engine coolant level to prevent loss of coolant.

5. Remove the heater assembly attaching screws.

6. Remove the heater assembly from the cowl.

7. If the heater core is to be removed, it can be removed at this time. y

VENTILATION AND HEATER CONTROL Remove and Install

1. Disconnect battery.

2. Remove the RH lower trim panel. (Fig. 1-30) 3. Disconnect steering column as outlined under STEERING COLUMN, Section 9A. 4. Loosen the two lower control panel attaching bolts and remove the two upper bolts. (Fig. 1-30) 5. Disconnect speedometer cable from transmission. Tip control panel toward seat.

6. Disconnect the vacuum hoses, electrical connections and the temperature cable from the control.

7. Remove the three control attaching screws and remove control from control panel. (Fig. 1-31) To install reverse the removal procedure.

BLOWER RESISTOR Removal and Installation

The blower resistor is mounted on the heater case. To remove, disconnect the wiring connector and remove the attaching screws. (Fig. 1-29) To install, reverse removal procedure.

HEATER HOSES

The vent ducts are attached as shown in Fig. 1-34. Air from the duct assembly is distributed to the vent center outlet and to the right and left side vent outlets. For removal of outlets refer to TORONADO INSTRUMENT PANEL Section 12EA.

The heater hoses are routed as shown in Fig. 1-35. A water valve is not used on cars equipped with a heater only.

With ignition switch in "RUN" position and blower speed switch "ON" connect tester BT 11-20 across fuse holder for Heater-A/C and use meter to locate short in one of the following wires: 1. From fuse panel to blower speed switch.

2. From blower speed switch to heater resistor.

3. From heater resistor to blower.

TEST LIGHT DOES NOT LIGHT ON ALL TERMINALS

With ignition "OFF", disconnect 3 wire connector from resistor. Connect a jumper lead from battery positive terminal to the blue wire terminal in connector. Use 12 volt test light to check for voltage at blue wire on blower speed switch. Repeat same test on other wires.

Check blower motor ground

POOR OR NO GROUND| Repair ground

TEST LIGHT LIGHTS ON ALL TERMINALS

GROUND OK Check motor connector with 12 volt test light.

Note: Short circuit may be intermittent. If tester does not indicate a short circuit, move harness around as much as possible to re-create short circuit. Watch and listen for arcing.

Check fuse 25 amp. Heater-A/C

Disconnect resistor connector, connect one lead of a self powered test light to any one terminal and use the other lead to probe each of the other two terminals.

2. From master switch to blower speed switch.

Note: Short circuit may be intermittent. If tester does not indicate a short circuit, move heater harness around as much as possible to recreate short circuit. Watch and listen for arcing.

The following tests should be made with the ignition switch in "RUN" position and the lever on heat position.

PERIODIC MAINTENANCE

The air conditioning system should be thoroughly inspected at least once a year, preferably in the spring prior to warm weather.

Check refrigerant lines for freon leaks.

Check refrigerant, replenish as necessary.

Check compressor belt tension with BT-7002-3, adjust as required.

Remove road accumulation from Condenser at every engine oil change interval or as necessary.

OPERATION OF SYSTEM COMPRESSOR

The refrigeration system uses a recirculating axial type six cylinder compressor, with intake and discharge valve reeds for each cylinder. These valve reeds cause the compressor to have a definite separation between the discharge (high) side and the suction (low) side. Oil is picked up by the refrigerant in the compressor and is pumped through the refrigeration system. The compressor can be disassembled for service.

A serial number plate is attached to the top side of the com-

pressor and includes the Serial Number, Model Number and refrigerant charge.

PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE

The compressor is equipped with a pressure relief valve which is placed in the system as a safety factor. Under certain conditions, the refrigerant on the discharge side may exceed a safe operating pressure. To prevent damage, the valve is designed to open automatically at approximately 440 psi (470 psi on Toronado). Any condition that causes this valve to open should be corrected, and the refrigerant oil and refrigerant should be replenished as necessary.

MUFFLER

A muffler is used in the refrigerant system to reduce compressor noises and high pressure line vibrations. No repairs are to be made on the muffler. If a muffler is defective, it should be replaced. Install the muffler with the outlet side down to prevent trapping refrigerant oil.

CONDENSER

The condenser assembly in front of the radiator is made up of coils which carry the refrigerant, and cooling fins which
