COMMISSIONING AND ADJUSTMENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR 150-RB SHOVELS AND DRAG LINES.

The correct performance of the electrical equipment on the machine is expressed in numerical values which are recorded on the electrical adjustment sheets. The correct settings for the machine are obtained by adjusting the resistances which control the excitation currents and normally every machine is correctly set and all readings taken '"' before the machine leaves Ruston-Bucyrus Ltd. All adjustments are checked by the erecting engineer and blueprint copies are supplied for each machine, the figures as finally verified by Ruston-Bucyrus Engineering Department being entered in the line marked 'Standard', spaces in the line marked 'Actual' are left blank to record check readings made in the field.

The settings are not identical for all front end equipments. If front end equipment is changed at any time, apply to Ruston-Bucyrus Ltd. for the correct adj1:1stment figures applicable to the new equipment.

(1) Observe all measures necessary to ensure safety. Do not attempt to open or close any motor or generator armature or field Circuits when the equipment is running. This is IMPORT ANT.

(2) When recording readings for all controller steps move the controller smartly to the last notch forward and take readings on each step as the handle is returned to neutral. Then,' repeat starting at the last notch reverse. . Take readings as smartly as possible consistent with rea:'sonable accuracy and return controller to 'Neutral' without delay t.o avoid over-heating of windings and resistances.

(3) It is essential that the rotation of machines is correct and that wiring is carried out to give correct field polarities, as otherwise serio.us damage to the equipment could result. If at any time subsequent tb commissioning of the machine any reconnection is made to the cables between the driving motors and the ultimate supply, rotation should be checked before allowing the equipment to run up to any appreciable speed.

(4) Initial Commissioning of Equipment. Before starting the equipment for the first time after erection, equip· ment changes or wiring changes, polarity checks should be made as described later on circuits which have not been previously checked. The fo.llowing circuit should be opened and should not be reconnected until the appropriate polarity check has been made.

(a) Self field on each control exciter. each control exciter terminal box. Open by disconnecting X2 at

(b) Voltage field on each control exciter. Open by disconnecting XX3 at each control exciter terminal box.

(c) Main Armature circuit of each motion. Open by disconnecting the external main cable to HD3, CH3, and S4, at the control exciter set bedplate terminal box.

(d) Motor Field of each motion. Open by disconnecting the cable to "'" field at terminal 129, 229, 327 and 328 at resistanc;:e frames.

(5) Constant Voltage Exciter- Adjustment. The C. V.E. voLtage should be 125 volts when the machine is hot, but will be approximately 130 volts when cold.

With all equipment shut down and controllers in neutral connect a suitable voltmeter across the C. V.E. terminals A and YY (A is positive).

Set the cubicle test switch in the 'TEST' position, start excitersnot M.G. set. Note that control exciters, blowers, and compressor will start at the same time.

Check rotation and read C. V.E. volts.

To increase the voltage decrease resistance R Tl in main field circuit. To decrease the voltage increase resistance R Tl.

As the C. V .E. voltage falls as the machine warms up, resistance RT21 in the temperature compensating field circuit should be increased, if necessary, to bring the voltage up to 125 volts.

(6) Polarity Checks and Adjustment Sheet Readings. Polarity checks must be made in the following sequence:-

Control Field Main Generator Field Check. With all equipment shut down.

Check controller in off position.

Main armature circuit - open.

Control exciter self field - open. Control exciter voltag'e field - open. Motor field - open.

The above circuits must be open on all motions which have not been checked previously.

Connect voltmeter (250 v) across control exciter terminals A and AA. Connect voltmeter (650 •V) across generator terminals. Set cubicle test switch in the 'RUN' position.

Start M.G. set and check rotation.

Start exciters and check rotation.

Move controller to step 6 and record voltages at control exciter and generator ensuring that the polarities correspond to the controller position as indicated on the D4C. Wiring Diagram.

Self Field Check.

With control exciter shut down and controllers in neutral connect self field on control exciter being checked, the self fields on other motions being left open if they have not been checked previously. Start exciters.

Move controller to step 6 and record voltages ensuring that the polarities are correct and that both voltages show an increase from readings with control field only.

Voltage Field Check.

With control exciters and M.G. set shut down and controllers in neutral connect the voltage field, on the exciter being checked, the voltage field on the other motion (not swing) being left open if it has not be checked previously.

Start M.G. set and exciters.

Move ·to ·seep 6 and record voltages ensuring that the pol· arities are and that both voltages show a decrease from readings with control and self field combined. (Will not apply on swing motion).

MAIN GENERATOR OPEN CIRCUIT VOLTAGE READINGS.

Following the previous checks the main generator open circuit voltage for each controller step should be recorded.

If, subsequent to commissioning, field check readings are required, proceed as follows:-

Check (1) All equipment shut down.

(2) Controllers in neutral.

(3) Control exciter control field - closed.

(

4) Control exciter self field - closed.

(5) exciter voltage field • closed.

(6) Main Armature circuit-open (see para. 4).

Connect voltmeter (650 v) across generator terminals.

Start M.G. set and exciter set. Record voltage for each controller step.

Main Generator Differential Series Field. Polarity Check and Control Exciter Current Field

With control exciters and M.G. set shut down and controllers in neutral connect the main armature circuit for the motion being checked, the main armature circuits for the other motions being left open if they have not been checked previously.

Check

Motor field- open. Air supply available to clutches.

Brakes applied.

Connect millivoltmeter to generator armature shunt. Start M.G .Set ONLY - NOT exciters.

Watch the Current Reading!

With correct differential series field polarity the current value should be less than 100 amps. but if it tends to rise to a high value STOP the M.G. set IMMEDIATELY as the indication is that the generator series field is reversed, which should be reported to Ruston-Bucyrus Limited.

After the forgoing check has proved correct polarity for the Generator Differential Series Field ensure that controllers are in neutral. Start the exciters and watch the current reading.

If the current tends to rise to a high value SHUT DOWN THE EXCITER SET IMMEDIATELY.

If wiring is correct, the indication is that the control exciter current field is reversed which should be reported to Ruston-Bucyrus Limited. With correct control exciter current field polarity the current value should be very low.

MAIN GENERATOR STALL CURRENT READINGS.

Following the previous checks the main generator stall current for each controller step should be recorded

If, subsequent to commissioning, field check readings are required, proceed as follows:-

Check

(1) All equipment shut down.

(2) Controllers in neutral.

(3) Control exciter control field - closed.

(4) Control exciter self field - closed.

(5) Control exciter voltage field - closed.

(6) Main Armature circuit - closed.

Check (7) Motor Field Open

(8) Air Supply available to clutches.

(9) Brakes applied.

Connect millivoltmeter to generator armature shunt. Start M.G set and exciter set.

Record current for each controller step.

MOTOR FIELD CHECKS

With equipment shut down check:a

(1) Controllers in neutral.

(2) Motor Field Closed.

{3) Main Armature circuit open.

Connect voltmeter (150 v) across motor field terminals . Start C. V. exciter set.

Record values of motor field voltage for all controller steps.

Motor Rotation.

With equipment shut down and controllers in n.eutral make all connections. Start up equipment as for normal operation. Operate the .controllers and check that motion movement is correct for the controller position.

In the case of the swing motion, the motion should be checked for each swing motor unit 1n turn. The field on one swing motor only should be connected. Having detero mined the correct motion for this motor this field should be opened and the field on the other swing motor should be connected and correct motion determined. Both fields may then be connected. Do not open or close fields with equipment running.
