DESCRIPTION I
INTRODUCTION
I. DESCRIPTION
The 45-R is a rotary type drill designed for drilling of blast holes in quarry and strip mining operations.
It can be an all electric machine receiving power from high voltage trail cable or it can be a diesel-electric I machine with a deck mounted diesel engine furnishing power for the various electric motors. .
II. READ INSTRUCTION MANUAL CAREFULLY
This, manual has been compiled to give the owner and operator information as to the care, operations, and maintenance of the machine.
For convenience, it has been written in sections. Familiarize yourself with the various sections so that you can easily locate the particular information you may need.
Every effort has been made to have this manual as complete as possible at the time of printing. However, since the Bucyrus-Erie Company reserves the right to improve its products continually, changes may be made that are not covered in this manual.
ALWAYS USE THE PARTS CATALOG WHEN ORDERING PARTS TO INSURE GETTING THE RIGHT PART FOR YOUR SPECIFIC SERIAL NUMBERED MACHINE.
II. PERIODIC INSPECTIONS
A regular and planned inspection of all moving parts should be made at least once during each shift.
All other parts such as supports, brackets, etc., should be inspected at least once a week.
Remember, keeping bolts tight is just as much an item of maintenance as lubricating or adjusting the machine. A bolted connection which is not quite tight will quickly pound itself into a loose and dangerous connection. Similarly, a weld which has cracked can be easily repaired by "V-ing" it out and rewelding, but if the crack is allowed to open, it may spread so much that proper al ignment of the part is lost. A satisfactory repair is then hard to

An item of maintenance not to be overlooked is cleanl iness. Clean and paint the machine as part of regular preventative maintenance schedule.
IV. BREAK-IN PERIOD
The first several shifts should be devoted to carefully breaking-in the by running at various speeds and 1 ight loads. Remember, that the drill machinery is new and tight, and if diesel powered, the engine is new and tight also. Careful break-in always makes bearings and gears last longer.
V. TERMS AND DEFINITIONS
Throughout this manual, the use of the terms "l e ft" and "right" and "front" and "rear" must be understood to avoid confusion when following instructions. "Left or LH" and "Right or RH" indicate the left and right sides of the drill when facing the instrument panel from the operator's compartment. The front of the machine is the power unit end and the rear of the machine is the operator's end.
VI. SAFETY HINTS
For increased stability when propelling up an incline, always have the rear of the drill go up first.
For increased stabil ity when propell ing down an incl ine, always have the front of the drill go down first.
On electric machines, always be sure that they are grounded properly and that the contact resistance of each ground should not exceed 25 ohms.
Handle the electrical trail cable with great care. Keep it out of water, away from drilled holes, and away from sharp rocks.
Practice good housekeeping habits. Do not leave rags or tools laying around the cab or walkways.
Wipe up all grease and oil.
Always think and work safely. Remember that you are in charge of this big piece of machinery and it could do a lot of damage if not operated properly.
