1-15 Power excavating equipment is subject to tremendous stresses and shock loads. These stresses have been thoroughly studied and considered in the design and bui lding of Marion equipment. Marion shovels and draglincs are bui It with an ample reserve of power and strength and are well fitted to meet the demands of their task. However, the Marion engineers cannot foresee the condit ions imposed by abuse, mismanagement and neglect. These factors are more damaging to any piece of equipment than years of continuous operation and normal wear. Care. sound judgement and reason are an economic necessity in the operation of power equipment.

AIR SYSTEM
2-1 The controls of the Marion 151-M Shovel rotating frame and front end are actuated by compressed air. The compressed air is controlled by electric solenoid valves.
2-2 The Marion air control system is simple in operation and with reasonable care and maintenance it will have a long and trouble-free service life. The air control system can best be explained by a brief description of its components and their function in the system. Figure I shows a schematic view of the complete system used for shovel.
2-3 The operator must be constantly aware of the air pressure reading of the gauge. If at anytime the air pressure drops below the operating pressure differenti. (90 psi.), the operator should shut down the machine and investigate. DO NOT OPERATE THE MACHINE WITHOUT FULL TANK PRESSURE. If the proper air pressure is not maintained, check the following. Is the:
I. Compressor operating properly?
2. Pressure switch operating properly?
3. "V" belt drive properly adjusted and in good condition?
4. Air intake line obstructed?
AIR COMPRESSOR
2-4 The air compressor which supplies the system is located at the front right corner of the machinery deck. The compressor is a complete unit including a supply tank, electric motor and a two stage compressor with pressure switch.
2-5 The compressor is driven by a matched set of "V" belts. "V" belts transmit power to the compressor pulley through the sides of the belt; not the bottom of the belt. For this reason, "V" belts must never be al lowed to bottom in the pulley grooves.
2-6 The proper belt tension must be maintained. A belt that is too loose will slip and fai 1 to delivery the required pressure. A belt that is too tight wi 11 damage bearings through excessive loads. To determine the proper belt tension, push down on the belt with the thumb at the mid-point between the two pulleys. When the belt can be depres sed abou t 7/16" of an inch the tension is correct. Keep the belts clean and free from grease and oi I at all times.

LUBRICATION
2-8 Check the oi I level dai ly. For grade and kind of lubricant see Oi 1 Specification. USE NON-DETERGENT OIL ONLY.
AIR CLEANER
2-9 The air cleaner, located at the compressor, is the intake source of ai r to the compressor. Remove the cleaner at regular intervals and clean the element. Immerse the element in crank case oi I (the same grade and kind as used in the compressor crank case) and drain excessive oil before reassembling. In dusty conditions, clean and oi I dai ly.
ANTI-FREEZER
2-10 The anti-freezer is a pressure unit that is installed in the system to prevent icing and freeze up when the machine is operated at temperatures below 32°F.

15]-M
2-11 The unit is located in the del ivery line from the compressor receiver air tank far enough from the compressor so that the compressor heat wi 1I not effect the unit. The anti-freezer introduces into the air stream an alcohol vapor which mixes with the water vapor in the air.
2-12 The unit consists of an alcohol chamber at the bottom and a vapor chamber at the top. A hex plug at the top is fitted with a central rod. A wick around the central rod carries alcohol from the lower chamber into the upper where the alcohol is vaporized into the air stream.
2-13 The unit is non-adjustable. Before fi I1 ing with methyl alcohol release the pressure in the air system and vent the unit by loosening the plug in the top of the anti-freezer unit. Remove the filler plug and fi lIthe lower chamber with approximately one quart of Methyl Alcohol disti lIed from wood. A thorough investigation has proven that Ethyl Alcohol is unfit for use. DO NOT USE RADIATOR ANTIFREEZE. A liberal use of Methyl Alcohol is more economical than downtime.
2-14 Be sure the top plug and fi I ler plug is tight before turning on the globe valve at the compressor.
AIR RECEIVER (TANK)
2-15 Several times each day open the air valve under the receiver tank and blowout the condensed moisture. At the end of each day's operation, open the valve and blowout the entire system. When high humidity is present, the drain valve can be "Cracked" open to allow the moisture to bleed out as it accumulates.
ROTARY AIR SEAL
2-16 The rotary air seal forms a connection between the air lines and the rotating shafts.* The rotary seals are lubricated at the factory for the life of the seal. No attention is required. When install ing a new rotary air seal, the short piece of flexible hose attached to the seal must be used to prevent any distortion which might cause the rotary seat to bind. Make sure the gasket is in place.

CROWD FRICTION REGULATOR VALVE
Valeur de reglage initiale: 3,Z K/cmZ (45 p.s.i).
2-17 An air tube clutch located on the Intermediate Crowd Shaft transmits the crowd torque from the crowd motor to the shipper shaft. This clutch slips when shock loads are imposed at the dipper and protects the crowd machinery. For an initial setting use 45 psi.
