Engines are liquid cooled, in-line six cylinder, four stroke diesel engines. Crankshaft rotation is counter-clockwise at pto (flywheel) end of engine. Firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4 for all engines and cylinders are numbered from front to rear. Models DT-414, DT-414B, DT-436, DT-436B, DT-466 and DT-466B are equipped with turbochargers. Model DTI-466B is equipped with a turbocharger and an intercooler. Refer to page 104 for other International Harvester models.
MAINTENANCE LUBRICATION Recommended engine oil is SAE 5W-20 or SAE 5W-30 for temperatures below 0°F., SAE IOW for temperatures between 0°F. and 32°F. or SAE 30 for temperatures above 32''F. API oil classification should be CD. Crankcase capacities for oil changes are as follows:
NOTE: The life of fuel fiiters depends on the amount of contamination they must remove from the fuei. if engine misfires or ioss of power is evident, renew the fliters. in any event, fiiters shouid be renewed after each 800 hours of operation.
BLEED FUEL SYSTEM. When fuel filters have been renewed, when engine.
in operation, runs out of fuel or when any connections between injection pump and fuel tank have been opened for any reason, bleed air from fuel system as follows: Make certain fuel tank shut-off valve is open. Unlock plunger of hand priming pump which is attached to rear of injection pump. Open vent on final (front) filter. Operate hand pump until fuel coming out of final filter vent is free of air bubbles. Close vent on final filter and lock hand pump plunger in place.
INJECTION PUMP TIMING. To check or adjust static timing, remove access cover or plug (Fig. IH40 or IH41). Rotate crankshaft in normal direction of rotation until engine timing pointer is aligned with correct timing mark on crankshaft pulley or engine flywheel. Correct timing marks are as follows: D-312 D-360, D-414, DT-414, D436, DT-436, D-466 DT-414B, DT-436B, DT-466B DT-466 DTI-466B

At this time, timing mark on injection pump hub and pointer (Fig. IH40 or IH41) should be aligned. If pump timing marks are not aligned as shown, remove pump drive gear (working through opening in front of timing gear cover) and align pump hub and pointer. Reinstall drive gear and tighten cap screws to 30 ft.-lbs. torque. Install cover and plug, if so equipped.
D-312, D-360 nO.Oqts. D-414, D-436, D-466 **11.0qts. DT-414, DT-414B, DT-436, DT-436B, DT-466, DT-466B, DTI-466B **17.0qts. *Add two quarts for filter change. **Add three quarts for filter change. Manufacturer recommends renewing engine oil after every 100 hours of operation and installing new oil filters after the first 100 hours of operation and then after every 200 hours of operation. FUEL SYSTEM FUEL FILTERS. All models are equipped with two diesel fuel filters mounted on left side of engine. Primary filter is the rear filter on all engines.
