For YOUR EYES only…

Learn about the latest developments in Refractive Surgery and Laser Vision Correction now available in the Westman Region. This on-site Public Information Seminar will review: Innovative Vision Correction Surgery options for Nearsightedness (Myopia), Farsightedness (Hyperopia), Astigmatism and Reading vision Presenter: Guillermo Rocha, MD, FRCSC, FACS Complimentary Screening Testing will be provided On-Site Limited seating. Contact Torrey at torreyw@grmc.ca or 204-727-1954 | www.ocularcentre.com We live in the 21st Century, and it is possible to achieve surgical vision correction better than ever before, with modern, high quality technology. The Ocular Microsurgery & Laser Centre in Brandon was founded by Eye Physician and Surgeon Guillermo Rocha, MD, FRCSC, FACS as a tertiary care facility in Ophthalmology. It specializes in the diagnosis and management of surgical and medical conditions of the eye through the collaboration with public, private, academic, and research entities. The Centre provides “vision for life” by providing care for medical, surgical, or emergency situations to all age groups by a full time Ophthalmologist, two part time Optometrists, and six Certified Ophthalmic Technicians. Local surgeon, local care Assessments, most surgical procedures and follow up care are provided locally in Brandon. Modern technologies allow patients to experience improved quality of life through more freedom from glasses or contact lenses. Patients can receive cataract surgery using laser-assisted techniques and advanced technology lenses to correct astigmatism and reduce the need for reading glasses. Laser surgery choices include LASIK, PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), Intacs, and Kamra inlays. These laser techniques are provided in partnership with Image Plus Laser Eye Centre. Refractive surgeries are used to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses. Conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia can be treated using an Excimer Laser (VISX iDesign and Amaris 750) and IntraLase Femtosecond Laser. Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) or Visian ICL surgeries are performed locally for high prescriptions. Cataracts can now be removed using Femtosecond Laser-assisted Cataract Surgery (Victus Femtosecond Laser Platform) and Ultrasonic Phacoemulsification. Advanced technology lenses are available for astigmatism and presbyopia. The Centre has access to virtually all lenses available worldwide, and is able to custom order implants depending on the needs. Intraocular Contact Lens (Visian ICL) ‘Phakic’ refers to an eye that still has its natural lens in place. ‘Aphakic’ refers to an eye that has had its natural lens removed. Therefore, a Phakic IOL is an artificial Intra-Ocular Lens (IOL) that is implanted inside the eye without removing the eye’s natural lens. Because in a sense it works as an ultra thin, permanent contact lens, it is often referred to as ICL, or Intraocular Contact Lens.

Both the cornea and the lens are responsible for focusing light images on the retina. The most common forms of refractive surgery, PRK and LASIK, change the focusing power of the eye by removing tissue from the cornea. For those who are too nearsighted or farsighted to have their corneas reshaped, an intra-ocular procedure that compensates from within the eye may be the only viable alternative. When we are young, the natural lens inside the eye changes shape to help us see clearly in the distance and up close. This is called “accommodation”. Usually, around age 40 the natural lens loses its ability to change shape. This condition is called “presbyopia”. Phakic IOLs are ideal for younger patients whose natural lens can still change shape. Phakic IOLs can be thought of as implantable contact lenses. Some Phakic IOLs are designed to be placed in front of the iris (coloured part of the eye) while others are designed to be placed behind the iris. Performed as an outpatient procedure, the IOL is placed inside the eye through a very small, self-sealing incision. You will remain comfortable as the eye is completely anesthetized. Everyone heals differently, but many patients report improvement in their vision almost immediately, and most resume their normal activities within a day or two. One eye is done at a time, and the second eye is usually done within a week or two. Find out if you are a candidate to experience freedom from glasses! Further information about the clinic and the treatments available can be found on the website. Call and register for an informational seminar for more information about certain eye care subjects. The Ocular Microsurgery and Laser Centre is located at Suite 20, 144 - 6th Street Brandon, MB R7A 3N2. Phone 204-727-1954. www.ocularcentre.com

SANDHILLS CASINO SET FOR SENSATIONAL CELEBRATION Since it opened its doors in June of 2014, Sand Hills Casino, located on Highway 5 just ten minutes south of Carberry, continues to provide folks from far and wide with plenty of different chances to win, fantastic food, great service and loads of live music entertainment. This June marks the third anniversary for Sand Hills and they are marking the occasion with a sensational celebration! Hey Brandon Magazine sat down with Sand Hills Casino Director of Operations Jeff Melcosky to discuss their first three years and more. According to Melcosky “the third Anniversary celebrations will be held on Friday, June 23rd and will include a Free indoor BBQ for Gold Club Members 11:30 – 3:00pm. Inside the casino we’ll have Free Play draws all day long!” Melcosky says nearly 55,000 Gold Club members have signed up since Sand Hills first opened its doors and there are advantages to being a member, “the biggest advantage is CASH BACK. Turn the points you earn into REAL CASH BACK. 6

Besides that, you get entry into our promotions and you get discounts in Dunes, Oasis and our Gift Shop, discounts range from 10 – 25 % excluding alcohol and tobacco.” There will also be more prize draws in the offering at Sand Hills according to Melcosky, “This past winter we gave away 4 all-inclusive week-long trips for two to sunny destinations in Mexico, Bahamas, Dominican Republic, and Cuba. We also gave away a brand-new ATV in May. BE sure to always check out The Gold Club inside the casino, our online through the website, and Facebook for upcoming promotions. I will say that we are looking at something new for the upcoming fall season. People always like free stuff whether it is cash giveaways, free play or merchandise people always comment that they love our food. We have a new Head Chef, a local Brandonite Kyle MacGranachan on board and will be launching our new Oasis menu very shortly.

he 32,000 square-foot casino, which consists of over 300 slot machines and 7 gaming tables including (blackjack, poker and roulette) has another reason to celebrate as it recently surpassed 8 million dollars in jackpot payouts. Melcosky says there is a certain limit that a payout qualifies as a jackpot, “any win over 1000 dollars is considered a jackpot. We have had 30 Jackpots over 10 Grand and our biggest to date was 36,800!” For the poker fans Melcosky says, “currently there aren’t any tournaments in the works but we do have live cash games every Friday and Saturday night.” For the slot fans Sand Hills has machines ranging from penny slots which make up 90% of the casino’s game selection to 7% nickel slots and 3% dollar machines, there are even a $5.00 machine for the more daring types out there. Sand Hills boasts pay outs of up to 98% which Melcosky explains this way, “We have machines on the floor that pay back to the customer 98% of the money that goes into the machine. An example would be if you put 100 dollars in then you should get 98 back. Now keep in mind this happens over

a long period of time and very large amount of spins on the game.” As Sand Hills remains a destination venue, many folks continue to wonder about accommodations are in the works to which Melcosky says, “there is always talks of a hotel down the road but nothing planned in the immediate future just yet.” However there are attractive cabins and a new campground within walking distance that are available to rent through Forest Hills Cabins (1-866-228-3132). The casino was built at a cost of approximately 25 million dollars (including construction and content costs). From day one Sand Hills employed over 150 full and part time staff, it currently staffs 100 people in the various departments throughout the facility. Melcosky says any individuals interested in gaining employment at Sand Hills should visit the careers section of official Sand Hills Casino website: www.sandhillscasino.com. The Casino is open from 10:00am – 3am Monday to Thursday and recently we have gone 24-Hours on the weekend. So from Friday at 10am we remain open until 7

Monday at 3am. Sand Hills does have regular charter service set up with a variety of charter companies. Melcosky says, “there is a high volume of busses from Brandon and Winnipeg but we do have charters in from Saskatchewan from time to time. Folks should check our website for more info on bus schedules and availability (www.sandhillscasino.com) or call 1-855370-7263 Sand Hills expects a large crowd to attend their third anniversary celebrations June

8

23rd however their largest crowd was last summer during their annual car show which drew 2600 visitors to the casino. Melcosky says folks can expect more exciting happenings on the Sand Hills event calendar, “We always celebrate the typical holidays but our biggest annual event is our car show which is August 6, this year. We always look at new ideas and events to promote Sand Hills Casino. As always keep an eye open and an ear tuned into our advertisements.”.

CONFIDENT KIDS BORN TO SPARKLE! Having a child can be the most exciting event in your life as well as the most terrifying. You await the arrival with excitement and anticipation, thinking, “I wonder, will we have a boy or a girl, what will they look like, hair, no hair”, just to name a few thoughts that might be running through your head. Then, the big day arrives and reality sets in, “Oh my goodness I am responsible for a human being and it didn’t come with an instruction book! How do I raise my child to be confident and well- adjusted right into adulthood?” At least this was my experience. As much as we love and want to protect our children with hopes that they will grow up and become productive human beings, there are many challenges for them along that path. There are, all the different kinds of media influences, peer pressure, and possibly family issues just to name a few. It’s quite a maze they will go through. What can you do to help them navigate this maze? The challenge – most kids aren’t taught critical life skills for self-confidence and success. Have you ever taken a personal development training or leadership course and wondered, “why didn’t I learn this when I was a kid”? By the time we finally learn these things, limiting beliefs and old habits are deeply ingrained and much more challenging to uncover and break through. We weren’t born with limiting beliefs about what is possible for ourselves and neither were our children. In fact, when you watch young children at play they can be a super hero, princess, fireman, astronaut, whatever they can dream up, and believe that’s what they will be when they grow up. Then, if you look at these children when they are at the age of 7or 8, many

have already started comparing themselves to other children. Now, fear, self-doubt, and judgement often creeps into their lives. As a result, children may develop limiting beliefs about themselves, their lives, and how the world works. Many parents see this shift but don’t know what to do about it. We can tell our children they are “great”, but that’s not enough. No matter how much we love our children or how much time we spend with them, we can’t give them selfconfidence. We can’t give them self-esteem. We can’t give them success. But, what we can do is teach them to develop it in themselves – and that is what the program I use does. This program is designed to let children: 1. Understand the Power of their Mind and Why they Achieve what they Believe, 2. Choose Who they Want to be and Stand up to Peer Pressure, 3. Develop Soaring SelfEsteem and Powerful Self-Confidence, 4. Create their Vision, Achieve their Goals, and Manifest their Dreams, and 5. Learn to Bust through Fear, Failure, Mistakes, and Change and go for their Dreams!

MY FIRST RETURN TO MY COUNTRY Karla is one of our ESL students and we are very proud of her for having the courage to write an article with her limited English. Two and a half years ago, I moved to Canada with my daughter to join my husband who was already here. Everything was new for us, including the weather. We came from El Salvador in January. It was so cold, everything and everywhere was white. But when the spring came and the snow was gone, everything changed for us.

unusual activity while offering participants an ecological experience. When doing canopy you glide from one point to another by horizontal cables. Wearing full safety equipment, similar to what mountain climbers wear. You are able to feel and experience the sensation of flying as you zip along these cables nestled in the treetops. It was very exciting.

When it got warmer, I started to visit different places in Brandon trying to get to know this city. I found it all beautiful, clean, safe, and quiet. After a few weeks, I started English classes. Here I made some friends and then I felt more adapted.

El Salvador’s beaches are located on Central America's Pacific Coast. The beaches are home to some of Latin America's finest surf breaks. But surfers are not the only travelers who enjoy the beautiful beaches of my country. The coast is lined with villages both lively yet quiet, and the warm waters are perfect for swimming as well as surfing. In addition to enjoying this paradise, we also enjoyed the fresh and delicious seafood and natural beverages such as coconuts. Of course, I ate pupusas almost every day!

This past December my family had the opportunity to go back to my home country. We were excited because from the bottom of our hearts we missed our family, our friends, the food, the warm weather, and in general all of my country. We arrived in El Salvador on Christmas Eve. Our family was waiting for us and had prepared a lot of traditional food for the season such as turkey in tomatoes sauce, tamales, bread stuffed with chicken, and so much more. Our trip was only for three weeks, but we had time to visit many different areas of El Salvador. We visited traditional villages like Ataco, Apaneca, Juayua, and Panchimalco. We also visited Furesa, which is a zoo in the middle of the mountains. Finally, we spent a week at the beach. While we were in the mountains visiting Furesa there is a place where you can do “Canopy”. This is a new adventure sport whose main objective is to offer a very

The sadness came when we had to say good bye. My daughter and I were crying all night during our farewell, because it is so hard to say good bye to the people you really love. It is hard say good bye but we like Canada. It is a safe place for our family and we have more opportunities and a good future for my daughter.

ORACLE BUILDING MAINTENANCE He wasn’t getting better. It felt like countless trips to the hospital and countless doctors shaking their head because they couldn’t tell him why his son, Lex, was still sick. A two year old child should be healthy, should be curious, should be wearing out his parents because he’s so involved and engaged in being alive, in discovering his world. He shouldn’t be lying there, listless, struggling to breath, staring blankly. There are a lot of things about being a parent that are hard and scary and confusing. But having a sick child that you are powerless to help, and the guilt, the sorrow, the debilitating anguish that follows you everywhere, that is something else all together. But that wasn’t what Peter Boland was thinking about as he sat motionless in his office, his head hanging, his eyes absently staring at his hands. He was thinking about how his wife had to quit work to care for Lex, he was thinking about how different life can turn out from what you expect, he was thinking about the siren. Almost the instant he dropped the phone and flung open the door he could hear the ambulance siren in the distance. Lex just had a seizure, and as he looked at the tiny, pale body of his son cradled in his wife’s arms all Peter could think was, “why isn’t the siren getting any closer?”. After what felt like an eternity the EMTs rushed in to carry his son away. At first Lex was taken to Brandon General, but when the doctors there realized the gravity of the situation they transferred him to the Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg. That was a few weeks ago and as Peter sat in his office, thoughts racing through his head, a sudden and unexpected prick of gratitude and relief burst the bubble of his despair and changed the course of his life. There were two things Peter cared about: accomplishing his goals and making money. It was the late 2000s and Peter had just opened the doors or Oracle Building Maintenance and the money had started rolling in. He felt on top of the world, and he was. For a high school drop out that the world had tried to convince would never make it, he felt like he had arrived, that he had done what so many had tried to tell him he couldn’t. Like most opportunities in life, the idea to create his own company to provide cleaning services to businesses came both unexpectedly and as a result of his own dissatisfaction with the way things were done. Peter wanted to fix that and the solution

was simple: do a better job than the other the other janitorial companies out there and make money while doing it. This spurred in him a hunger to learn how to be successful in business. So he sought out books, courses, conferences, mentors, and anything else that would help him accomplish his goal, would make him money, would make him the best. And as he stood there that bright day that he opened his doors for business, he basked in his accomplishment and in the simplicity of his single minded pursuit: accomplish his goals, make money. Peter thought of that day as he sat in his office staring at his hands and he marvelled at how tragedy can strip away and compress a life. How that bright day felt like yesterday and how Lex being sick felt like all he had ever known. And as he sat there he felt pieces of himself fall away. Gone was what turned out to be shallow certainty and defiant confidence. Gone was the single-minded pursuit of accomplishing, of gaining, of having. Gone was the belief in his invincibility and the illusion of control that comes from it. And in their place was gratitude. Gratitude for the EMTs that came for his son. Gratitude for the strength and steadfastness of his wife. Gratitude that he was able to afford to give his son the care that he needed. Gratitude that is son was still alive. And out of this gratitude grew a new vision for himself, his life, and his business. Today Oracle Building Maintenance employs over 100 people and is setting a new standard in the business of janitorial services; one that is based on integrity, transparency, and trust. Just as Peter and his family received exemplary service from the EMTs that came to help his son, Oracle Building Maintenance has a strong focus on customer service and satisfaction, whether they are cleaning your office, medical clinic, restaurant, or industrial building. It took tragedy for Peter to realized that there is more to life and to business than what he could get; and that really, what makes a life worth living and a business worth owning, working for, or hiring is what it can give. Peter is reminded of this every time he looks at Lex, who is now 4 and full of excitement, curiosity, and enough energy to tire out both of his parents. Just as a child should be.
