Portage Transport has been part of the Portage la Prairie hub for many years before Bernie and Liz Driedger assumed ownership. The company at that time full filled a need for bringing LTL (less than truckload) shipments from terminals and warehouses in Winnipeg to businesses in Portage la Prairie and other destinations within a 100 km radius. Bernie had been a long haul truck driver for the previous ten years and was looking for a business that would allow him to still be involved in trucking but also to be home consistently. The property on Fourth Ave NE where Portage Transport was located, became unsuitable for the company’s purposes so an existing, vacant 2400 sq ft warehouse situated on 9 acres on Lorne Ave E was purchased. When the opportunity came in 2002 to sell the courier business to a Winnipeg based company, Bernie and Liz began the long road of building a long haul trucking company that today boasts 110+ trucks meeting the logistical needs of customers across Canada and continental US. Portage Transport employs 150 drivers, mechanics and office personnel. The property itself has been upgraded over the years to create almost 10 acres of solid useable yard. The building size has been increased to over 17,000 sq ft. and a warehouse has been added within the past year to meet not only the transportation needs of its customers but to provide storage options as well. On the equipment side of business, as a fully accredited Manitoba Commercial Vehicle Inspection Site, the shop is kept busy by a team of truck and trailer mechanics. They maintain and repair Portage Transport’s fleet as well as meeting the demands for outside repairs. A recent acquisition of rotary columns in the shop is proof that the company supports safety and provides a good working environment for its employees. In the 90’ wash bay, trucks and trailers are not only made to look appealing as they drive down the road, but compliance standards are met by sanitizing the inside of trailers to ensure food safety. Another compliance and efficiency measure is an on-site weigh scale which assists drivers in knowing they
were working within legal weight limits. In the office, personnel dedicated to moving freight, negotiate rates with customers and communicate instructions to drivers. From beginning to end, communication is key to ensuring customer satisfaction. It may not always be a message the customer wants to hear but nonetheless appreciates being informed if there will be service interruptions. The administrative team ensures that human resource, accounting and safety & compliance responsibilities are accurately carried out. From beginning to end, Portage Transport is dedicated to providing the best possible experience for its customers. Their slogan Making your load a little lighter stems from the idea that when you surrender your freight haul needs to them, you should rest assured they will do everything possible to get it to its destination. Portage Transport is proud to be a part of the Portage la Prairie community. Bernie’s and Liz’s daughters were born and raised here. The girls were an active part of the company from the beginning, coming in after school and on weekends in the early days to assist with filing and data entry. While one has gone on to other line of work in Winnipeg, the other has recently returned to Portage with her husband to become part of the company. Her knowledge of the financial world and her husband’s interest in mechanics have been a tremendous asset. Portage Transport gives back to the community by providing equipment to local service clubs; to the Rotary Club for its annual Vegetable Sale and to the Potato Festival for some of its refrigeration needs. Over the past couple of years four of its trailers have been rolling billboards for Portage la Prairie with the City of Possibilities decal emblazoned on them. As the company will be celebrating its 20th anniversary later this summer, Bernie and Liz look back on the struggles and successes of their business. “It’s been a ride!” And both are quick to say the company would not be where it is today without the dedicated team that works alongside of them. My grandmother once gave me an advice that had stuck with me ever since. She said, “Success is not about what you’ve achieved but what you do with it once you’ve achieved it.” I’ve always pondered on the meaning of such a statement. It’s hard to comprehend when one speaks in parables; such was the likes of my grandmother. The adage “with age comes wisdom” in my case applies. My interpretation of my grandmothers’ proverbs was another aphorism that I’ve tried to live by. My interpretation to that was “good name is better than riches”. The basis of this theory is the foundation on which Maxx Security was founded.
I joined the military after college and deployed. After a decade plus years in the military, I decided to use my experiences to start this company to bring proper security to the community and to give employment to fellow ex and retired military members who still have a lot of fight to carry forward as well as employment to people from different backgrounds. The team is well trained and dedicated and takes on events such as 24-Hour security services for commercial, industrial and residential buildings, mobile patrols, foot patrols, loss prevention, socials etc. We look forward to any business or businesses that will give us a chance to prove our professional services. Born in Accra the capital of Ghana in West Africa, I lived with my grandparent and eventually my aunt where my life will shape to what it had become. Hard work, perseverance, determination, discipline, respect for self and others as well as dedication was instilled in me from a very young age. Life will eventually turn 180 degrees for me when I arrived in Canada at the age of 17 and began a different life and culture. Every person and or friend that came into my life from that moment on had a profound effect on me from high school all the way through college.

SENIOR SAFETY
Seniors can face many difficulties, as they grow older. One issue faced by many seniors is safety. Physical safety can be a challenge as we age. Canada Safety Council provides safety tips to help in the aging process, and what seniors can do to make their home free of safety hazards. Fall prevention, fire safety, walking in the winter and the older driver are all topics covered by the Canada Safety Council. Visit their website at https://canadasafetycouncil.org/senior-safety for more information. Police Academy Older Adults Division is a workshop focused on safety principles and skills for older adults. This program is available to older adults in Portage la Prairie in the spring of 2018. Please call Portage Service for Seniors for more information regarding dates and locations. Topics that can be covered include: elder abuse; Planning for Your Future; Identify theft / Internet Safety; Frauds and Scams; Safety in the Home and on the Street; Falls Prevention; Emergency Preparedness; Fire Safety; Safe Banking Practices; Substances and Gambling; Safe Driving; Scooter Safety; Medication Safety.
