For YOUR EYES only…

Learn about the latest developments in Refractive Surgery and Laser Vision Correction now available in the Westman Region. This on-site Public Information Seminar will review: Innovative Vision Correction Surgery options for Nearsightedness (Myopia), Farsightedness (Hyperopia), Astigmatism and Reading vision Presenter: Guillermo Rocha, MD, FRCSC, FACS Complimentary Screening Testing will be provided On-Site Limited seating. Contact Torrey at torreyw@grmc.ca or 204-727-1954 | www.ocularcentre.com We live in the 21st Century, and it is possible to achieve surgical vision correction better than ever before, with modern, high quality technology. The Ocular Microsurgery & Laser Centre in Brandon was founded by Eye Physician and Surgeon Guillermo Rocha, MD, FRCSC, FACS as a tertiary care facility in Ophthalmology. It specializes in the diagnosis and management of surgical and medical conditions of the eye through the collaboration with public, private, academic, and research entities. The Centre provides “vision for life” by providing care for medical, surgical, or emergency situations to all age groups by a full time Ophthalmologist, two part time Optometrists, and six Certified Ophthalmic Technicians. Local surgeon, local care Assessments, most surgical procedures and follow up care are provided locally in Brandon. Modern technologies allow patients to experience improved quality of life through more freedom from glasses or contact lenses. Patients can receive cataract surgery using laser-assisted techniques and advanced technology lenses to correct astigmatism and reduce the need for reading glasses. Laser surgery choices include LASIK, PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), Intacs, and Kamra inlays. These laser techniques are provided in partnership with Image Plus Laser Eye Centre. Refractive surgeries are used to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses. Conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia can be treated using an Excimer Laser (VISX iDesign and Amaris 750) and IntraLase Femtosecond Laser. Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) or Visian ICL surgeries are performed locally for high prescriptions. Cataracts can now be removed using Femtosecond Laser-assisted Cataract Surgery (Victus Femtosecond Laser Platform) and Ultrasonic Phacoemulsification. Advanced technology lenses are available for astigmatism and presbyopia. The Centre has access to virtually all lenses available worldwide, and is able to custom order implants depending on the needs. Intraocular Contact Lens (Visian ICL) ‘Phakic’ refers to an eye that still has its natural lens in place. ‘Aphakic’ refers to an eye that has had its natural lens removed. Therefore, a Phakic IOL is an artificial Intra-Ocular Lens (IOL) that is implanted inside the eye without removing the eye’s natural lens. Because in a sense it works as an ultra thin, permanent contact lens, it is often referred to as ICL, or Intraocular Contact Lens.

Both the cornea and the lens are responsible for focusing light images on the retina. The most common forms of refractive surgery, PRK and LASIK, change the focusing power of the eye by removing tissue from the cornea. For those who are too nearsighted or farsighted to have their corneas reshaped, an intra-ocular procedure that compensates from within the eye may be the only viable alternative. When we are young, the natural lens inside the eye changes shape to help us see clearly in the distance and up close. This is called “accommodation”. Usually, around age 40 the natural lens loses its ability to change shape. This condition is called “presbyopia”. Phakic IOLs are ideal for younger patients whose natural lens can still change shape. Phakic IOLs can be thought of as implantable contact lenses. Some Phakic IOLs are designed to be placed in front of the iris (coloured part of the eye) while others are designed to be placed behind the iris. Performed as an outpatient procedure, the IOL is placed inside the eye through a very small, self-sealing incision. You will remain comfortable as the eye is completely anesthetized. Everyone heals differently, but many patients report improvement in their vision almost immediately, and most resume their normal activities within a day or two. One eye is done at a time, and the second eye is usually done within a week or two. Find out if you are a candidate to experience freedom from glasses! Further information about the clinic and the treatments available can be found on the website. Call and register for an informational seminar for more information about certain eye care subjects. The Ocular Microsurgery and Laser Centre is located at Suite 20, 144 - 6th Street Brandon, MB R7A 3N2. Phone 204-727-1954. www.ocularcentre.com

AN EYE FOR OPPORTUNITY Carlos Munoz’ Path to Prosperity by Creating Success for Others By Vern May

It’s hard not to find yourself intrigued by Carlos Munoz, a self-made business success story that began from very humble beginnings in a city in Mexico and ended up as one of the rising stars on the business landscape on the Canadian prairies. The creator and publisher of a growing magazine brand and also the proprietor of his own grocery store and eatery, this ambitious young man demonstrates that opportunities await all who dare seek them out. Munoz and his wife Diana had their eyes opened to the opportunity for a bright future in Canada while visiting when he was just 22 years old. What had originally been a four week holiday revealed that the country was much safer than the United States and he identified gaps in products and services that were available locally which sparked his creative energy. “For many like me, when you first come to a new country, you don’t consider that it is possible to own your own business,” says 6

Munoz. “You focus on getting a job and many don’t know what support and resources are available to help them realize their dreams. I was fortunate to have been able to take the leap. Originally from Queretaro, Mexico, Carlos became an entrepreneur in his teens and was drawn into the world of business. As a young man, he operated a clothing store and later a street corner hamburger stand which evolved into a catering business. But with his education, degree in business and Master’s in Marketing, his eyes were soon set on bigger opportunities. He would never have predicted that his journey would land him in Brandon, Manitoba. “When I arrived here in 2013, I noticed that aside from the local newspaper and radio station, there really wasn’t a platform for local business to promote themselves,” says Carlos. “It gave me an idea to develop a magazine that created a platform not just for an ad, but to really promote local business

and to spotlight the men and women behind those rural business success stories.” The result of his vision was a business and lifestyle spotlight magazine called “Hey Brandon”. But he discovered that as a new business person in the community, starting from scratch, that it was going to require a lot of attention to establish trust with the merchants who would be featured on the pages of his publication. However, his relentless drive to get the magazine up and running has had a rewarding payoff. “The growth of Hey Brandon has been better than we expected. We started with a few thousand copies in circulation and we have grown the distribution to 4,000 copies per issue. The business people have really embraced the idea of being able to tell their story in their own way.” The magazine generated enough ad revenue to launch a quarterly publication schedule and is now nearing its fourth year in print – featuring small enterprise alongside community business leaders and incorporating Munoz’ vision for a publication

that fills the market gap. While still an evolving brand, the local magazine has generated interest from other markets, which has led to an expansion of the title. “What makes the magazine different is that we don’t run any national ads,” says Carlos. “Our mission has been to promote a local dynamic and we demonstrate that throughout – with local writers, local designers, local printers and staying true to the small businesses that benefit most from the visibility that we can offer.” In the summer of 2017, Munoz was approached by representatives from the City of Portage la Prairie who were looking to adopt his approach for a publication spotlighting their region of 20,000 people in the urban and surrounding rural trade area. It was a matter of weeks before enough interest was secured to confirm that a second magazine title under his portfolio “Hey Portage” would be launched in September. With two quarterly magazines, each running a circulation of 4,000 copies in print and being distributed at more than 100 locations within 7

their respective markets, as well as a strong following of their digital editions via the ISSUU.com platform, Munoz is sometimes surprised to learn just how far reaching his work has been – especially with a keenly focused effort on Brandon and Portage la Prairie. Munoz points to social media as well which has been a strong platform to help get the word out, and that will be further augmented by a dedicated website for the magazine family this winter. “Not long ago, we received a call from a reader in Calgary. They wanted to thank us for what we have done to spotlight their former home town in Portage. When we get feedback like that it tells us that we are going in the right direction, and we’ll continue to push ahead.” For both Carlos and his wife Diana, the reward that comes from promoting new businesses and supporting start up entrepreneurs is one that they enjoy the most. Helping those whose budgets are stretched to the limit and whose marketing opportunities 8

may be limited is one of their strongest motivations to further expand the reach of their magazines. “Sometimes, it is stressful when you’re working with such a wide range of customers to get all of their content in by deadline. Some of that stress, maybe I put on myself because I want the finished product to be perfect and ensure that the customer is happy. If they aren’t in love with what they see, we need to go back to the drawing board, because that article needs to reflect that entrepreneur as best we can.” As for the future, there are a growing number of businesses lined up for feature articles over the coming year that will keep both magazines fresh and there are discussions underway to explore another sister publication under the “Hey” brand. We may see another title come on stream as part of the portfolio in 2018. If you want to contact Carlos, you can call him at 306-209-0389.

Healthy Eating Choices Paramount for New Pita Pit Owner Right from the time Jigar Patel (J.P) started working at Pita Pit in 2013 he had aspirations of running his own franchise. The big opportunity came in 2015 when his boss and former Brandon Pita Pit owner decided to sell. JP as he prefers to be called, says there are many reasons why he decided to take over the Brandon Pita Pit franchise, “We did a lot of research which showed us the trend was to go with a healthier food option. Pita Pit is one of the fastest growing businesses with healthy food choices. Their product is better than most in fact it’s super good! Plus they give a chance for their employees and franchisee’s to grow.” Originally from Vadodara, Gujarat, India (pop. 250,000) J.P. graduated from T. John College of Pharmacy in Banglore India. He immigrated to Canada in 2009 and attended Niagara Falls University. While attending University in hopes of completing his pharmaceutical studies the fork in the road moment happened. He started working for a few different fast food types of chain restaurants and grew fond of the food and beverage industry. He eventually left Niagara 10

Falls to come to Brandon in 2012. He quickly landed a job at Pita Pit, “I worked there for 3 years and was partner with the previous owner during that time before making the big decision to take over the franchise.” One of JP’s main goals is to carry on the tradition of fresh and healthy food choices for his customers, “I want to see my community eat healthy especially with the kids, we want to provide them with one more healthy choice in Brandon. Being a good corporate citizen and a successful business man are two more important goals.” Another one of JP’s objectives is to provide competitive pricing with his Pita Pit location. The 658 18th street location is open 7 days a week and its 1200 square feet of space has become quite a popular spot for lunch and supper rushes but they also offer an all-day breakfast option as the restaurant opens at 9:30am (10am Sundays) They will continue to offer attractive menu additions and promotions. Check their social media pages (Facebook, Twitter etc.) as well as their website (PitapitBrandon.com) for ongoing promotions.

“We like to focus more on the University students Bobcat players get 20% discounts students get 15% discount (ACC & B.U students through PAW PASS program. Also Emergency Services people get a 10% discount when they come in with their uniform on. We always try to support local whether it’s with our suppliers or schools or events.” They are also a participating restaurant with Skip the Dishes.

The new Pita Pit franchisee recently became a proud new papa for the first time! JP and his wife Hetal who’ve been married for nearly eight years welcomed their beautiful baby boy Vivaan into the world this past March. According to the ever entrepreneurial JP, his family isn’t the only thing he plans on growing in the near future, “My ultimate goal is to open another Pita Pit location either here in Brandon or somewhere in Western Manitoba within one year.”

About Us

Volunteers Needed!

The Brandon Humane Society has been in operation since 1946 when it was founded by Eleanor Kidd. She originally housed the Shelter in her garage on 13th Street, then in an abandoned stable near Empress Bay, and later in an old barn near the riverbank where Eleanor Kidd Gardens are now located.

The Shelter has a wonderful and dedicated pool of approximately 70 volunteers who all play an important part carrying out the regular tasks needed to care for the animals. Some volunteers have been with us for decades. Our volunteers also organize many of fundraising activities and special events.

In 1997, the Shelter moved to its new premise at 2200 17th Street East. These days, our residents - both cats and dogs - live in a building with heat and air conditioning, two large exercise yards, an enclosed cat patio, and kennels for approximately 30 cats and 30 dogs at any one time. When our kennels are full our dedicated volunteers foster animals in their homes.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please stop by the Shelter to pick up an application.

Since we are a NO KILL Shelter, the atmosphere is very positive...our animals are loved and well cared for as they wait to be adopted. We invite you to come and visit to see for yourselves.

Pawsitive Communities

Thank You!

Pawsitive Communities is a non-profit program operating under the Brandon Humane Society that aims to spay/neuter/vaccinate/educate in First Nations communities. The Pawsitive Communities mobile veterinary trailer has done two spay/neuter clinics so far, with one planned for Sioux Valley First Nation at the end of September. Between the first two clinics, 80 dogs and two cats were spayed/neutered and vaccinated. By providing these services we hope to reduce the overpopulation, illness, mistreatment and neglect plaguing these communities. The Pawsitive Communities trailer is the first of its kind in Manitoba, in that it will provide not for profit vet care.

Thank You to everyone who made our 2017 Wag-a-tail Walk-a-thon a huge success. We are so grateful for all the amazing people who helped with this years event!

School Tours The Brandon Humane Society plays host to a number of School tours ranging from grades 4 and up. It is an excellent hands on resource for the next generation to learn about the importance of rescue centers and the vital role they play in our society.

Personal Care Home Visits The Brandon Humane Society is proud to announce that we do regular pet visits to Senior or Retirement Homes upon request. So many residents look forward to these visits where we often bring puppies for them to socialize with. It is a great way for the residents to enjoy a little unconditional love from their delighted furry friends who get so much attention in return.

EMPOWERING KIDS TO HANDLE

THE UPS & DOWNS OF LIFE Certified through “Adventures in Wisdom”. Adventures in Wisdom Company and certified Wisdom Coaches have been bringing personal development and life coaching to children since 2012. Belief Systems-What Are Yours? “The quality of your thoughts determines the quality of your life.” Understanding how your mind works is the secret behind why some people live happy, fulfilling lives-a life of their dreams, while others seem to struggle-never quite achieving the life they imagined or dreamed of. We are all born with greatness in us and along the way, well-meaning people impart their belief systems on us as to what is possible or not. Belief systems are the programs we are running in our mind, they are what we believe about ourselves, our world, and how everything works, it’s what we think is right or wrong and true or false about life. Some examples of beliefs are: “I’m smart”, “People like me!”, “I’m too old or too young to start a business”, “I don’t think I can”, “Life is tough”, “You have to work hard to make a living”, It’s always been that way”... Our beliefs directly impact how we feel about ourselves (our self-esteem) and what we can accomplish in our lives (our selfconfidence). There is no magic behind creating a happy life, achieving your goals, and making your dreams come true – the key difference between happy successful people and the unhappy, struggling people is what they choose to believe about themselves and what is possible for their life. The happy successful people believe in their heart that good things will come to them and that life is meant to be fun and happy. The unhappy struggling people often believe that somehow things won’t work out for them and that life is hard. They let fear, past mistakes, and other negative thoughts get in their way. Let’s have a look at two people who some might have thought had the cards stacked against them right from the beginning... First, we’ll have a snapshot look at Oprah Winfrey. She was born to a really poor family in rural Mississippi, USA. When she was a young girl, she discovered the magic of books and realized there was a world beyond rural Mississippi. She envisioned herself in that world! Despite having a rough childhood and being sexually abused Oprah saw education as her way out. Although she had many setbacks she studied hard, went to college, and started a career in radio and television. Oprah is now one of the most successful television hosts in the world, runs her own company, has a successful magazine, started a school for girls in Africa, and donates money to charities every year. Oprah believed in herself and her dreams. Second, let’s look at an NBA (National Basketball Association) player, “Muggsy” Bogues. He had one major thing that would have made the majority of people give up the idea of being in the NBA even before they got started... he only grew to 5’3” tall. This is shorter than most grown men and absolutely about a foot and a half shorter than the average NBA player! However, Muggsy believed in himself. He worked hard in high school and college and delivered on the basketball court. The NBA coaches were impressed and after college he was recruited into the NBA! He played in the NBA for 16 years and is still the shortest player to have played in the NBA. The fans loved him because he was such a hard worker. Muggsy once told Sports Illustrated magazine, “I always believed in myself. That’s the type of attitude I always took out on the court, knowing that I belonged; that with my talents, my abilities, there’s a place for me out there.” Oprah and Muggsy believed they could create more in their lives. They saw possibilities for themselves, even when faced with huge obstacles. They wanted more from their life, but more important, they believed they would get it. 18

While some people understand how belief systems work, most do not! Most people are never taught about the power of belief systems, thinking in “possibility”, or given the tools to help them achieve their greatest dreams. Instead, limiting beliefs and limited thinking are passed from generation to generation, often without even realizing it. Remember back when you were a kid. Did you ever daydream? I know I sure did and still do! Interestingly, how many of the very things that are destined to help you and humanity such as pursuing what you love and daydream about most, are quite often discouraged by people, especially authority figures. Sometimes it’s by well-meaning authority figures such as a parent, teacher, coach, or school counselor. An example of one of the more frequent ways you’ll see people discouraging this in others is when they say things like, “Stop daydreaming” or “Get real you’ll never be able to do that.” We can break that cycle! Daydreaming is part of human nature. You have something special to offer the world that is buried deep inside of you and getting that out into the world involves using your creativity. It’s something you know you’re good at and it’s something that makes you unique. The creativity you possess is the backbone behind what you’ve always dreamed of doing. All kids have dreams and greatness in them. As they grow, there will be things that get in their way. These will be the same things that will teach them resilience, strength, courage, and the lessons that will breathe life into the remarkable potential that is in them. What we all want for our children is for them to come through these things with a strong belief that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to. “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t: you are right!”-Henry Ford My program offers many tools to help kids and their parents when it comes to figuring out how to deal with: experiencing low self-esteem and self-confidence, feelings of shyness or unworthy, peer pressure, being bullied, bullying others, lying or sneaking, being irresponsible, being disrespectful, lacking self-respect, feeling like a victim, experiencing fear or nervousness, feeling down or sadness, experiencing anger/life’s not fair, feeling moody/grumpy/negative, not achieving goals/lack of direction, experiencing change and fear, overcoming mistakes/failure/disappointments, and feelings of shame/embarrassment. Have a look at my website, which outlines what my program is all about or contact me and we can discuss it
