PALABRAS DEL PRESIDENTE

Como el hueso al cuerpo humano, y el eje a una rueda, y el ala a un pájaro, y el aire al ala, así es la libertad, la esencia de la vida. Cuanto sin ella se hace imperfecto.

Jose Martí (1853-1895), el Apóstol de la Independencía de Cuba

ebe ser cómodo vivir en el siglo XXI, preocupado por los negocios y la familia, disfrutando del fruto del trabajo y la creatividad y mirando con satisfacciòn la educación y progreso de nuestras familias. Esta circunstancia ocurre solamente cuando se vive en un contexto de libertad, que los cubanos no hemos gozado desde hace más de 50 años.

Pero la libertad tiene un precio, algo bien entendido por esta gran nación. Desde las Guerras Independentistas de los 1770 a través de la Guerra Civil, las Guerras Mundiales, las de Corea y Vietnam y de los conflictos recientes en el Medio Oriente y las Guerras contra el Terror, los norteamericanos han comprometido sus vidas para asegurar la supervivencia de la libertad y la seguridad de su futuro, amenazadas siempre por fuerzas desequilibrantes y malvadas. Prueba visual de dichos sacrificios se pueden ver en los monumentos y exhibiciones en la capital nacional que animan la mente e inspiran el alma.

Lincoln Memorial.

Monumento a Lincoln.

El Monumento a Abraham Lincoln, clásico templo griego presidido por una estatua majestuosa del mismo, metáfora poderosa a la grandeza de este hombre. Sobre la estatua rezan las siguientes palabras: “EN ESTE TEMPLO, COMO EN EL CORAZÓN DE LAS GENTES PARA LOS QUE SALVÓ LA UNION, LA MEMORIA DE ABRAHAM LINCOLN QUEDA CONSAGRADA POR SIEMPRE”.

El Monumento a la Segunda Guerra Mundial con su impresionante Muro de Libertad de Estrellas de Oro en honor a los 405,399 norteamericanos muertos o perdidos en acción.

En una de las columnas de este inspirador monumento conmemorativo se leen las emotivas palabras del Almirante Chester W. Nimitz: “LUCHARON JUNTOS COMO HERMANOS EN ARMAS, MURIERON JUNTOS Y AHORA DESCANSAN JUNTOS, HACIA ELLOS TENEMOS UNA OBLIGACIÓN SAGRADA”.

PALABRAS DEL PRESIDENTE Monumento a la Guerra de Corea.

Korean War Monument.

El Monumento a la Guerra de Corea no es un edificio.

Enormes estatuas de soldados, cansados y desgarrados por haberlo dado todo por la libertad, y que tienen que seguir luchando, forman columnas humanas en el árido paisaje de la guerra. Las siguientes palabras elocuentes se han grabado en el pavimento.

“NUESTRA NACIÓN HONRA A SUS HIJOS E HIJAS QUE HAN RESPONDIDO AL LLAMADO

DE DEFENDER A UN PAIS DESCONOCIDO Y A UN PUEBLO CON EL QUE NUNCA SE HABIAN ENCONTRADO”.

El Monumento al Conflicto de Vietman es tan sutil que es casi una abstracción Zen. De ahí su poderoso mensaje. Un largo muro de granito negro, parcialmente enterrado en la tierra, un legado a los miles de norteamericanos que desinteresadamente dieron sus vidas para salvar a un pueblo extranjero de los estragos del comunismo totalitario y cuyos nombres aparecen tallados el la superficie oscura y brillante, nombres que claman por la libertad.

Alentados por el espíritu de nuestro Apóstol Cubano, podemos visualizar un muro similar, construido en nuestras imaginaciones, con los nombres de cada víctima, de cada luchador por la libertad, de cada uno que haya sufrido pérdida y encarcelamiento y desolación y desespero y dolor viviendo bajo regímenes totalitarios, nombres que también claman por la libertad. En su honor, nos inspiramos en los sacrificios de los norteamericanos por la libertad y se lo dedicamos a ellos y a la futura República Libre de Cuba, la que soñamos como Antorcha de Libertad en el Continente Americano.

Vietnam Memorial – In remembrance of the Missing in Action.

Este número de Herencia enfatiza la vida y obra de Ramón de la Sagra, importante naturalista y economista español. Durante su estancia en Cuba en el siglo XIX, llevó a cabo estudios científicos, especialmente en ciencias naturales. Dirigió el Jardín Botánico y el Instituto de Agronomia de la Habana y fué autor de numerosos tratados sobre el estado científico, económico y político de Cuba de esa época, incluyendo la famosa Enciclopedia de La Sagra de trece tomos, considerada de las más valiosas y poco comunes entre todas las publicaciones sobre Cuba.

Quisiéramos reconocer al Dr. y Sra. Michael Tyler por haber hecho posible las imágenes de Washington DC que aparecen en este trabajo

Luis Mejer-Sarrá. Graduado como Doctor en Farmacia de Sto. Tomás de Villanueva en La Habana, en 1958. Recibió títulos en Bioquímica y Farmacia de la Universidad de Pennsylvania y el Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. En 1970 recibe un PhD en Bioquímica de la Universidad de Miami.

Actualmente es Presidente de Greenworks, Inc., y Director Científico de Sarra Natural Products.

WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT

Like bones to the human body, the axle to the wheel, the wing to the bird, and the air to the wing, so is liberty the essence of life. Whatever is done without it is imperfect Jose Martí (1853-1895), the Apostle of Cuban Independence.

I

t must be comfortable living in the 21st Century preoccupied with business & family, while enjoying the fruits of our labors and creativeness & seeing with satisfaction the education & progress of our families. This is a circumstance that occurs only when we live in a context of Freedom and Liberty, something we Cubans have lacked now for over 50 years. But Freedom has a price; something well understood by this great Nation. From the Revolutionary Wars of the 1770’s on through the Civil War, World Wars, Korean and Vietnam Wars and the recent conflicts in the Middle East and Wars on Terror, Americans have put their lives on the line to ensure the survival of Freedom and the security of their future always threatened by destabilizing and evil forces.

Visual proofs of these sacrifices can be seen in monuments and displays in our Nation’s Capital that enliven the mind and inspire the soul.

The Lincoln Memorial, a striking classical Greek Temple with a bigger than life statue of Abraham Lincoln presiding, a powerful metaphor to the greatness of this man. Above the statue can be read the following words: “IN THIS TEMPLE AS IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE FOR WHOM HE SAVED THE UNION THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN IS ENSHRINED FOREVER”.

The World War II Memorial with its impressive Gold Stars Freedom Wall in honor of 405,399 Americans who died or were missing. In one of the columns of this inspiring and awesomeMemorial can be read these stirring words by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz: “THEY FOUGHT TOGETHER AS BROTHERS-IN-ARMS, THEY DIED TOGETHER AND NOW THEY SLEEP SIDE-BY-SIDE, TO THEM WE HAVE A SOLEMN OBLIGATION”.

The Korean Memorial is not a building. Bigger than life statues of soldiers, tired & bedraggled that have given it all for freedom, and must still keep going on, form human columns in the stark war terrain. The following eloquent words are etched in the pavement: “OUR NATION

The Vietnam Memorial is so subtle it is almost a Zen abstration. Therein lies its powerful message.

A long black granite wall partially buried in the ground, a testament to the thousands of American who so unselfishly gave their lives to save Vietnam War Memorial Wall. a foreign people from Muro del Monumento a la Guerra de Vietnam. the ravages of Totalitarian Communism and whose names are carved in its dark shiny surface, names that cry out for freedom.

Encouraged by the spirit of our Cuban Apostle we can visualize a similar wall constructed in our imaginations with the names of every victim, of every fighter for freedom, of everyone suffering loss and imprisonment and hopelessness and desperation and pain living under totalitarian regimes, names that also cry out for freedom. In their honor we pick up inspiration from the American sacrifices for freedom and we dedicate it to them and to the future free Republic of Cuba which we envision as becoming the Beacon of Freedom and Liberty in the American Continent.

This issue of Herencia emphasizes the life and work of Ramón de la Sagra, an important Spanish naturalist and economist. During his stay in Cuba in the 19th century he realized scientific studies, particularly in the natural sciences. He directed the Botanical Gardens and the Institute of Agronomy in Havana and he authored numerous treatises on the scientific, economic and political status of Cuba at the time including the famous 13-volume Encyclopedia of La Sagra which is regarded as most valuable and rare among Cuba publications.

Luis Mejer-Sarra graduated as a Doctor in Pharmacy from the Catholic University Santo Tomás de Villanueva, Havana in 1958. He received diplomas in biochemistry and pharmacy from the University of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. In 1970, he obtained a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Miami. He is the current President of Greenworks, Inc. and the Scientific Director of Sarra Natural Products.

ANTECEDENTES DE LOS JARDINES BOTÁNICOS EN AMÉRICA. El avance alcanzado por las civilizaciones pre-colombinas en ciencias, agricultura y artes fue notable, ya que, en materia de intercambio de plantas, unos tres mil años antes de los viajes de Colón ya los pueblos autóctonos americanos practicaban la domesticación y selección de plantas útiles comestibles y medicinales, y su difusión hacia nuevos territorios. Fue así que el maíz, el pimiento y el sisal viajaron desde las tierras altas de México hacia el sur del continente, y desde éste hacia el norte la piña, el cacao, el tomate, el tabaco y otros.

El frustrado afán de encontrar en las tierras americanas las preciadas “especies” del Lejano Oriente, propició entre los europeos la búsqueda de nuevas plantas útiles de forma inmediata al descubrimiento y el interés de intercambiar plantas tropicales.

A partir de 1765 surgen, principalmente en el Caribe, jardines botánicos neotropicales adscritos a los imperios, mantenidos por éstos como sitios estratégicos cuyo relevante papel en la introducción, propagación y distribución de plantas económicas para su posterior traslado a mercados europeos, se argumenta. Pese a las continuas guerras sangrientas entre las metrópolis, los jardines intercambiaron plantas pacíficamente.

EL PRIMER JARDÍN BOTÁNICO EN CUBA. La primera relación referente a las plantas de Cuba, es la de Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo en su obra “Historia General y Natural de las Indias”, publicada en Sevilla en 1535. Pasaron dos siglos antes de que el escocés William Houston hiciera la primera colección de plantas cubanas, conservadas hoy día en el British Museum.

Hasta principios del siglo XIX, la exploración botánica de Cuba parece haberse limitado a los alrededores de los puertos de La Habana y Santiago de Cuba, escalas obligatorias para los viajeros que se dirigían a México, América Central, a varias regiones de Suramérica y a las Antillas.

El Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid nombra corresponsales en Cuba, los cuales deciden fundar un jardín botánico en La Habana.

Tanto la Sociedad Patriótica de la Habana (fundada en 1792 y antecesora de la Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País) como el Real Consulado de Agricultura, Industria y Comercio, estuvieron muy interesados en el fomento de ciertas ramas de la ciencia, entre ellas la botánica y la química, por su utilidad en la práctica médica local, ya por aquel entonces destacada y con profunda influencia francesa, y por la utilización de las plantas en la industria.

Se comenzaron las obras y la recolección de plantas y de semillas, tanto indígenas como del extranjero, y el 30 de mayo de 1817 se inaugura el primer Jardín Botánico de La Habana en un terreno propiedad de la Sociedad Patriótica, limitado por el Campo de Marte o Militar, La Alameda y el Camino de la Puerta de Tierra; o sea, el área que hoy comprende el Parque o Plaza de la Fraternidad y el ala sur del Capitolio Nacional.

Fue designado como director el ilustre botánico nacido en suelo cubano José Antonio de la Ossa, quien estuvo a cargo del mismo por espacio de siete años, realizando una contribución sustancial al crecimiento y desarrollo del fondo florístico del jardín. El radio de acción se extiende hasta 30 leguas de la capital y permite a la Ossa redactar el manuscrito de un Ensayo de Flora Habanense y un Ensayo de Flora de Cuba, donde se propone dar noticia de las plantas que se encuentran en los caminos, bosques y pueblos hasta la distancia de 30 leguas de La Habana, explicando al mismo tiempo sus usos comunes, virtudes medicinales, nombres vulgares y correcciones de algunos géneros y especies, con inclusión de las plantas exóticas antiguas o recientemente introducidas de otros países y aclimatadas allí. Su muerte impidió su publicación.

Se plantaron, entre otros, naranjos, nogales, robles, ocujes, rosales, casuarinas, el árbol del pan, el de la goma elástica y plantas medicinales.

El recinto del jardín estaba limitado por una cerca de madera. La finca se hallaba dividida por una calzada central, contaba con una casa principal y otras dos edificaciones menores que servían de albergue a una pequeña dotación de 10 esclavos.

RAMÓN DE LA SAGRA Y EL JARDÍN BOTÁNICO DE LA HABANA. Mediante Real Orden de la Corona Española, emitida el 26 de febrero de 1821, se había ordenado establecer una cátedra de Historia Natural (en la práctica devino en Cátedra de Botánica Agrícola) con el objetivo de multiplicar la agricultura de Ultramar y ofrecer sus productos al comercio y otros usos. Sagra y Perís (La Coruña, España, 1798 – Neuchatel, Suiza, 1871) como catedrático, aunque no llegó a la isla hasta el 4 de agosto de 1823.

Se encuentra el Jardín Botánico de La Habana sin una dirección, pues José Antonio de la Ossa había caído en desgracia ante las autoridades cubanas y de la Sagra realiza un estudio para acondicionar el mismo a los objetos a que se destina, emitiendo un informe al presidente de la Sociedad Patriótica de Amigos del País. En éste explicaba la importancia de crear viveros para la correspondencia con Europa, para engrandecer la esfera del cultivo y la jardinería en la isla, con lo cual da fe de sus propósitos de intercambio de plantas.

El plan general de distribución del jardín resaltaba la escuela y el conservatorio como las partes fundamentales. Asimismo, mantenía los depósitos de plantas medicinales, que tradicionalmente se obsequiaban al público. En el resto del jardín, ocupado antes por bosques de árboles silvestres y áreas destinadas al mantenimiento de los negros de la dotación, de la Sagra indicó la conveniencia de instalar viveros, el semillero general, los ensayos agrícolas y de aclimatación, el conservatorio de plantas exóticas y el vivero de árboles indígenas, que serían en lo sucesivo el alma del Jardín Botánico de La Habana. Recomendó cercar el recinto con verjas de hierro como las del Campo de Marte, o en su defecto por una de limoneros, y perfeccionar las zanjas de desagüe, que se habían construido sin tener en cuenta la nivelación del terreno.

El 5 de julio de 1824, la Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País redacta un reglamento provisional para el Jardín Botánico de La Habana, destinando la institución a ensayos de climatización y cultivo, así como a paseos y recreo público. La Cátedra de Botánica Agrícola sería desempeñada por el profesor Ramón de la Sagra, quien formaría parte de la junta directiva del jardín; debía ajustarse a un plan de enseñanza inspirado en el Jardín Botánico de México, bastante similar al de Madrid, en el que se especificaba la enseñanza teórico-práctica. Puntualizaba la necesidad de reducir la enseñanza a la botánica agrícola como el aspecto Don Ramón de la Sagra y Peris. más importante para la riqueza del país. Se exigía al profesor que mantuviera correspondencia con el Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid, con otros de Europa y con los propios corresponsales de La Habana; la formación de catálogos y herbarios, presentación de memorias sobre el estado del jardín, la formación de una cartilla agrícola, la publicación de monografías, etc.

Ramón de la Sagra fue muy efectivo estableciendo relaciones con otras instituciones científicas, a través del envío de plantas y semillas, que incluyó a célebres profesores europeos. En 1827 fundó los Anales de Ciencias, Agricultura y Comercio y Artes, con la idea de publicar el cuadro general de los principales adelantos modernos en todos los ramos: historia natural, especialmente los de botánica cubana, química, física, matemáticas aplicadas a la economía de las fábricas, la agricultura y las artes. Trabaja también en las primeras modificaciones prácticas al trazado del antiguo jardín.

Incluye en los Anales artículos sobre el cultivo de la caña de azúcar, la germinación de semillas, el cultivo del añil, las gomas y resinas de Cuba, el cultivo del algodón y topografías vegetales, indicativos todos del interés de la Sagra por aplicar sus conocimientos de botánica al desarrollo agrícola cubano.

Propone una nueva diversificación agrícola a partir del clavo, la canela, el alcanfor, la nuez moscada, la vainilla, el añil, la pimienta negra, el cacao, el algodón, el sapote, nuevas especies de caña de azúcar y café, las piñas, el árbol de la goma elástica, etc. Esto se consideró después el futuro Instituto Agronómico. Desde su llegada a La Habana dedicó atención al estudio del clima y puso en el jardín observaciones meteorológicas, que luego publicaba en los Anales.

Publica el Manual de botánica médica e industrial para el uso de los habitantes de Cuba y demás Antillas de la Flora Médica de las Antillas que actualmente publica en París M. E. Descourtilz, con los nombres vulgares de las plantas de la Isla que carece la obra original (La Habana, 1827), con la intención de ofrecer plantas medicinales que podrían sustituir ventajosamente a las drogas farmacéuticas para la curación de algunas enfermedades.

El 22 de abril de 1829 se aprueba la Institución Agrónoma de La Habana en los terrenos conocidos como Molinos del Rey, en la falda de la Loma del Príncipe, que según el naturalista cumpliría además de los objetivos de experimentar cultivos, el de educar a jóvenes en los fundamentos y prácticas de cultivo en el régimen económico de las fincas. Se cumplía así otro sueño utópico de Ramón de la Sagra en torno a la agricultura cubana, ya que en esta institución se establecería una “hacienda modelo” en la que podría poner en práctica sus ideales de diversificación agrícola apoyado en un pequeño campesinado, situación muy diferente a la práctica de cultivos extensivos con esclavos dirigidos por mayorales ignorantes.

En 1831 da a conocer su “Historia Económico-Política de la Isla de Cuba”. Trabaja arduamente en la Institución Agrónoma y en el Jardín Botánico, el cual en 1833 pasa a depender exclusivamente de la Intendencia de Hacienda. Sus planes quedan interrumpidos por su partida hacia España en 1835.

En 1839, bajo la dirección de Pedro Alejandro Auber, sucesor de Ramón de la Sagra, y a causa de una crisis financiera de la Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País, los terrenos del jardín fueron vendidos para ubicar la Estación Central de Ferrocarriles.

Hubo que trasladar en escasas horas las plantas que pudieron moverse hacia la Quinta de Los Molinos, y todo lo demás se perdió. Allí permaneció el jardín hasta 1868.

Nueva ubicación del Jardín Botanico en el Gran Bosque de La Habana.

Más tarde ocupó un terreno a orillas del río Almendares cerca del reparto Aldecoa, en el Nuevo Vedado, en áreas del Gran Bosque de La Habana, de donde desapareció para integrarse en 1984 al actual Jardín Botánico Nacional.

Entre las principales contribuciones del jardín botánico para la población habanera, estuvo la medicina, pues varios de sus canteros, semilleros y viveros estaban dedicados al fomento de plantas medicinales, cuyas hojas, raíces y frutos eran solicitados y consumidos por muchas de las boticas o farmacias de la capital cubana. Esta costumbre devino en verdadera tradición que hoy conserva su arraigo.

A finales del siglo XIX, decayó la actividad de los jardines botánicos coloniales fundados en América, que se convirtieron en su mayoría en parques desprovistos de actividad científica, en el mejor de los casos.

BACKGROUND OF BOTANICAL GARDENS IN THE AMERICAS The progress attained by pre-Columbian civilizations in science, agriculture and the arts was remarkable since, when it came to the trading of plants, some three thousand years before Columbus’ voyages, native American people knew how to plant and select useful edible and medicinal plants and how to transport them to new territories.

The frustrated quest for finding precious “spices” from the Far East on American soil favored the search of new and useful plants among the Europeans and interest in the exchange of tropical plants soon after the discovery of America.

Beginning in 1765 and mostly in the Caribbean, new tropical botanical gardens, appointed and maintained by empires as strategic enclaves, played a relevant role in the introduction, propagation and distribution of productive plants that would later be transferred to European markets. Despite continuous bloody wars between the mother countries, botanical gardens exchanged plants in peace.

THE FIRST BOTANICAL GARDEN IN CUBA The first record of Cuban plants was made by Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo in his work, “General and Natural History of the Indies,” published in Seville in 1535. Two centuries went by before Scottish William Houston first collected Cuban plants, which are currently housed in the British Museum.

The Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid appointed agents in Cuba, who decided to establish a botanical garden in Havana. The Patriotic Society of Havana (established in 1792 and a precursor of the Economic Society of Friends of the Nation [Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País]), as well as the Royal Consulate of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce, was very interested in sponsoring certain fields of science, particularly botany and chemistry, based on their usefulness in local medical practice, which was already famous and deeply influenced by the French, and for the industrial utilization of plants.

Work began, along with the gathering of plants and seeds, both indigenous and foreign, and on May 30, 1817, the first Botanical Garden of Havana was

inaugurated on land belonging to the Patriotic Society, with boundaries on the Campo de Marte or Military Field, the Alameda and the Road to Puerta de Tierra; that is, the area currently comprised by the Park or Plaza de la Fraternidad and the south wing of the National Capitol.

An illustrious botanist born on Cuban soil, José Antonio de la Ossa, was appointed director, a position he held for seven years, contributing substantially to the growth and development of the garden’s flower fund. The radius of action went as far as 30 leagues (a league is defined as 3 mi. or 4.8 km.) from the capital, allowing Ossa to edit the manuscripts of “Essay on Havana’s Flora” and “Essay on Cuba’s Flora”, in which he intended to make known the plants found on roads, forests and towns within 30 leagues of Havana, explain their ordinary usage, medicinal applications, common names and make corrections of some of their genus and species, including ancient exotic plants or those recently introduced from other countries and acclimated to the area.

His death prevented its publication.

The garden was surrounded by a wooden fence. The farm was divided by a central road, had a main house and another two buildings of lesser importance that housed an endowment of ten slaves. Árboles plantados en el Jardín Botánico.

The Botanical Garden of Havana was left without direction since José Antonio de la Ossa had fallen into disgrace with the Cuban authorities while la Sagra conducted a study to adapt the garden to its original purpose, issuing a report to the president of Sociedad Patriótica de Amigos del País. In it he explained the importance of creating nurseries to correspond with Europe, to enlarge the sphere of crops and gardening on the island, confirming his purpose of exchanging plants.

Highlighting the general plan of the garden were the school and the conservatory, its basic components. There were also depositories for medicinal plants, which were traditionally given to the public for free. In the rest of the garden, formerly occupied by native tree forests and areas appointed to the feeding of the endowment of slaves, de la Sagra noted the convenience of installing nurseries, a general seed bank, agricultural experiments and acclimation, a conservatory for exotic plants, and nurseries for indigenous trees, which would thereafter become the soul of the Botanical Garden of Havana.

He proposed new agricultural diversification starting with clove, cinnamon, camphor, nutmeg, vanilla, indigo, black pepper, cacao, cotton, sapodilla, new species of sugar cane and coffee, pineapple, rubber trees, etc.

In 1831 he published his “Economic and Political History of the Island of Cuba.” He worked tirelessly at the Agronomist Institution and at the Botanical Garden, which in 1833 came to depend exclusively on the Office of the Treasury. His plans were interrupted with his departure to Spain in 1835.

In 1839, under the direction of Pedro Alejandro Auber, Ramón de la Sagra’s successor, and due to a financial crisis in the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País, the land belonging to the Garden was sold to build the Central Railroad Station. Within a matter of hours, plants had to be transferred to

It later occupied land by the banks of the Almendares River, near the Aldecoa subdivision of Nuevo Vedado, partly in the Havana Forest, from where it disappeared until becoming part of the current National Botanical Garden in 1984.

Medicine was among the great contributions made by the botanical garden to the people of Havana, since several plant beds, seed beds and nurseries were devoted to medicinal plants, whose leaves, roots and fruits were requested and used by many of the drugstores and pharmacies in the Cuban capital. This custom evolved into a true tradition that is still in effect today.

LA ENCICLOPEDIA DE LA SAGRA:

La obra que dió contenido a su vida Alberto S. Bustamante

esde 1829 hasta 1835 Ramón de La Sagra realiza una labor incansable con el fin preconcebido de publicar una historia de Cuba. Sus estudios experimentales en el Jardín Botánico de La Habana, donde se le había designado como director desde 1827, le permitieron convencer a las autoridades para fundar en la capital una Institución Agrónoma y una Escuela de Agricultura.

Había sido nombrado profesor de Historia Natural en 1822, y posteriormente profesor de Botánica Agrícola, lo cual facilitó sus objetivos.

En su discurso de 1824 durante la apertura pública de la Cátedra de Botánica Agrícola, manifiesta sus sentimientos y pasión por Cuba: “La naturaleza parece haber destinado a la Isla de Cuba a ser un almacén de lujo y civilización. Sólo la agricultura hará a esta isla floreciente”, dijo.

Su historia estuvo inspirada por la de Humboldt, y consideró un deber tributarle los más sinceros elogios.

Domingo del Monte celebró la obra de La Sagra considerándola una de las más completas y apreciables de su tiempo.

En esta fase de su vida, La Sagra revela una filosofía liberal y materialista, enfocada hacia el papel de la ciencia en el desarrollo de la sociedad, y el desarrollo de la misma con la actividad productora de los hombres. Señala la necesidad de sustituir la mano de obra directa por la máquina, para la industrialización de los cultivos y recolecciones. Para ello fija la utilidad de una historia física, política e industrial de la Isla de Cuba dirigida a encaminar y organizar la exportación de los recursos naturales del país.

Este proyecto se convierte en su principal objetivo, el cual dará contenido a su vida. En 1835 recibe autorización para volver a España. Ya lleva un objetivo preciso, buscar en París colaboradores para hacer realidad el sueño intelectual de una obra monumental.

HISTORIA Una mentalidad liberal con tendencias socialistas comienza a desarrollar cambios ante el ejemplo que ha visto en los Estados Unidos. Su mente va evolucionando respecto a la lucha entre proletarios y propietarios y se manifiesta a favor de ideas progresistas, de la importancia de que los ricos hagan justicia con los pobres y éstos no se subleven contra los ricos.

Rumbo a Francia visita Nueva York, adonde llega el 19 de abril de 1835. Los Estados Unidos se encontraban en un ascenso parabólico, en medio de un desarrollo económico que provoca una revolución espiritual en La Sagra. Esa profunda impresión lo transforma al punto de que sustituye el estudio de la naturaleza por el de la sociedad.

Gracias al régimen de libertades imperante en los Estados Unidos, hace referencia en sus escritos al libro que escribió también con láminas interesantísimas, además de sus relatos y observaciones. Lo describe de simple manera, como resumen de lo que ha visto y observado: “Dejar hacer: He aquí la máxima, el principio de eterna verdad, que nunca deberán olvidar los gobiernos y que la experiencia sanciona diariamente en este gran país de la Democracia Americana”.

Cuando parte rumbo a Europa, en septiembre de 1835, su alma se ha apasionado con la misión de redentor social, pero no ha abandonado las ciencias naturales. Fortalece su misión sabiendo que el progreso de las ciencias favorece el desarrollo de las fuerzas productivas y su relación directa con la felicidad del pueblo. A su paso por Zaragoza, observa las escenas de atraso social y las consecuencias de la guerra civil, pudiendo ver la diferencia con la sociedad norteamericana.

En 1838, en París, tiene contratiempos causados por el gobierno de Madrid y las autoridades de La Habana, que dificultan la publicación de la enciclopedia. En 1845 publica su folleto "Estudios coloniales con aplicación a la Isla de Cuba", con un acápite imparcial sobre la emancipación de los esclavos en las colonias inglesas.

Critica la restricción de la libertad en las colonias españolas, así como la esclavitud y sus abusos. Fue uno de los primeros en advertir la repercusión que traería la discriminación racial e insistió en la necesidad de la educación de los negros. Este enfoque, y la publicación del folleto, le costaron a La Sagra que le interrumpieran los créditos para la publicación de sus libros, y se le acusara de liberal y abolicionista. No obstante todas estas dificultades, cumplió con su deber y la historia vio la luz entre 1837 y 1855.

Se trata de una obra monumental de doce tomos, lujosamente impresa y encuadernada, con láminas en colores (cromolitografía de una calidad impresionante, hecha en la mejor imprenta de París de aquella época). En 1860 se imprimió un tomo adicional (volumen XIII) que se tituló "Cuba en 1860". Se hizo en español y fue poco conocida en Europa. En 1887 se consideraba ya una obra rara. A la edición francesa le faltaba la introducción a la Botánica que escribió La Sagra, así como capítulos y láminas.

Hechos relativos a la obra y su publicación Los estudios y materiales que sirvieron para la redacción fueron reunidos por el autor sin haber recibido compensación monetaria por el gobierno, con la excepción de su sueldo como catedrático de Botánica Agrícola en La Habana, que consistía en 1500 pesos anuales, y que a los pocos meses se aumentó a 2000 pesos anuales.

Ninguna obra de esta categoría ha sido emprendida en el extranjero bajo condiciones semejantes. Una vez reunido el

Se consideró esta obra, por muchos científicos, entre las más valiosas del siglo XIX. Fue la primera publicada por la Monarquía Española en la Península, Islas Filipinas y Puerto Rico. “La historia natural de las Islas Canarias” de Webb y Beethelat es incompleta en su parte económico-política.

En el reporte del 15 de febrero de 1851, faltaba todavía una parte del tomo VII. En un reporte del 5 de febrero de 1855 para un proyecto de ley que lograra el pago para la terminación de la obra, La Sagra dice lo siguiente: "Esta empresa señores, presentada a vosotros, es ciertamente superior a las fuerzas de un hombre, una empresa semejante solo pudiera confiarse a una comisión científica compuesta de hombres tan activos como inteligentes. Los señores diputados saben bien que acometí esta obra por el entusiasmo de la juventud, sin protección alguna del gobierno, durante doce años de mi residencia en la Isla de Cuba, sin el pago de un solo real por este inmenso trabajo, no más que la dotación de mi destino como catedrático. Fui espontáneo por consiguiente en esta tarea que ha latigado mis fuerzas. La culpa es mía, no debo quejarme a nadie".

La presentación fue extremadamente larga y hacemos un breve resumen, haciendo énfasis en la lentitud del proceso de publicación, interrumpido en múltiples ocasiones. Ninguna orden del Ministerio de Hacienda fue cumplida con puntualidad. Podrán comprender cuáles serían los compromisos y sinsabores de este gran hombre, al verse sin fondos en el mismo momento que se vencían los contratos. Esto se repitió en muchas oportunidades. Dice La Sagra:

“Tal era la inercia en el Ministerio de Hacienda, tal el abuso y el desorden, que en una ocasión por tres años no se distribuyó ningún ejemplar. He visto con gran dolor el que no exista ningún ejemplar en las bibliotecas de provincias, a su majestad no se le ha entregado una, a ningún ministerio. He visto en casa de algunos oficiales las láminas en colores, las tenían los niños pegadas en las paredes con obleas, los pájaros de Cuba recortados y metidos entre las yerbas y arbolitos en nacimientos durante la Navidad”.

Como dato curioso, en una nota del Director de Ultramar del 25 de junio de 1853, se hace referencia al recuento del encuadernador Don Miguel Ginestá, que fue contratado por La Sagra y el Ministerio de Hacienda para la encuadernación de los ejemplares. En algunos de los ejemplares originales se puede comprobar la calidad del trabajo de Ginestá, que se convirtió en una tradición de generaciones. Eudaldo Ginestá, bibliógrafo, encuadernador, coleccionista y descendiente de la misma familia, vivió en Nueva York por muchos años; fuimos amigos y compartimos conocimientos sobre la obra de La Sagra, al igual que Carlos Ripoll, recientemente fallecido. La obra completa de La Sagra, que había comprado Ripoll a Ginestá, fue donada a la biblioteca de la Florida International University.

Varias de las obras completas de La Sagra en colecciones públicas y privadas en el exilio de Miami formaron parte del saqueo patrimonial de Cuba después de 1959. Afortunadamente hemos podido rescatar parte de ellas, y se han donado a la Colección Cubana de la Universidad de Miami, al Museo Colonial de la Florida y a Herencia Cultural Cubana.

Una obra completa, como la referencia de Ripoll presentada en esta revista, fue vendida por la casa Christie's en 1999 (ver imagen adjunta). Esta perteneció al Rey Leopoldo I de Bélgica, y es una de las diez obras completas conocidas que existen en el mundo actualmente. Creo que este podría ser el mismo conjunto que me ofreció a mí el 20 de junio de 1988 Bookfinders Internacional, Inc., de California, por 148.200 dólares. De lo contrario, tendríamos que añadir una obra completa más a las mencionadas.

La misión científica que se le asignó a La Sagra durante su periodo cubano cobró una amplitud y significativo diferentes en la segunda mitad de su vida, cuando su empresa se convirtió en una obra providencial, al servicio de la humanidad.

El conocimiento de Cuba, de su belleza, de su flora, de su geografía, de su población y recursos, echaba luz sobre una faceta desconocida del Nuevo Mundo.

Los artículos de Marcos Antonio Ramos y de Carlos Ripoll, y mis notas sobre su obra, creo presentan un buen resumen de este intelectual gallego que, siendo español, sintió profundamente por Cuba y, como Humboldt, hizo una contribución maravillosa de investigación para la agricultura, la historia natural, la ciencia, la cartografía y las estadísticas, dejando un legado extraordinario con su obra de toda una vida.

Sus comentarios de orden social y sociológico representan sin duda alguna el elemento más novedoso de estos trabajos.

CHRISTIE’S TO AUCTION On March 17, Christie’s in London will auction one the rarest book on Cuba – The Physical Political and Natural History of the island of Cuba (Historia fiísica, política y natural de la Isla de Cuba).

Written by Don Ramón de la Sagra and published in Paris between 1839 and 1856, the book – a first edition in 12 volumes – is regarded as the most thorough study of the island compiled at the time.

Formerly owned by Belgian King Leopold I (1770-1865), the book is the only complete copy of the original Spanish edition to appear at auction in the past 20 years. The elaborately illustrated volumes cover botany, geography, history, zoology and agriculture.

These territories were supposedly visited during a joint voyage made by Juan de la Cosa and Americo Vespucci during Ojeda’s expedition of 1499.

rom 1829 through 1835, Ramón de la Sagra worked tirelessly with the notion of publishing a history of Cuba. His experimental studies in Havana’s Botanical Garden, where he had been appointed director in 1827, allowed him to convince authorities to establish an agronomical institution and a School of Agriculture. He had been named professor of Natural History in 1822, and later professor of Agricultural Botany, which made his goals easier.

In his speech of 1824 during the inaugural of the Chair of Agricultural Botany, he stated his feelings and passion for Cuba: “Nature appears to have destined the island of Cuba to be a warehouse of luxury and civilization. Only agriculture will make this island flourish.”

His history was inspired by Humboldt’s, and he felt it his duty to pay him his most sincere accolades. Domingo del Monte praised la Sagra’s work considering it one of the most thorough and worthy of his day.

During this phase of his life, la Sagra espoused a liberal and materialistic philosophy focused on the role of science in the development of society, and the development of society itself based on man’s productivity. He stated the need to substitute man’s direct labor for machinery in order to industrialize crops and harvesting. This is the useful purpose of a physical, political and industrial history of the Island of Cuba, focused on guiding and organizing the export of the country’s natural resources.

This project became his main objective, giving meaning to his life. In 1835 he was authorized to return to Spain. He had a precise goal in mind: to obtain backers that would make his intellectual dream come true in a monumental endeavor. On the way to France, he stopped in New York, arriving on April 19, 1835. The United States at the time was in a parabolic rise, in the midst of a financial ascent that triggered a spiritual revolution in la Sagra. That

importance of the rich doing justice to the poor and of the latter not rebelling against the rich.

In 1838, in Paris, he suffered setbacks in the publishing of the encyclopedia due to the government in Madrid and the authorities in Havana. In 1845 he published a booklet, “Colonial Studies Applicable to the Island of Cuba,” with an impartial section about the emancipation of slaves in British colonies. He criticized freedom restrictions in Spanish colonies as well as slavery and its abuses. He was one of the first to warn of the repercussions brought about by racial discrimination and insisted on the need to educate Blacks. This way of thinking, and the publication of the booklet, cost la Sagra his credit for publishing his books and accusations of being a liberal and an abolitionist. Notwithstanding these difficulties, he did fulfill his obligations and his history became a reality between 1837 and 1855.

It is a monumental work consisting of twelve volumes, luxuriously printed and bound, with color illustrations (chromolithography of the highest quality from the best Parisian printer of his day). In 1860, an additional volume was printed (volume XIII) entitled “Cuba in 1860.” It was published in Spanish and was little known in Europe. By 1877, it was considered a rare work. The French edition is missing the introduction to Botany written by la Sagra, as well as some chapters and illustrations.

Thanks to the prevailing rules of freedom in the United States, he makes reference in his writings about the book he wrote, which has very interesting illustrations, in addition to his stories and observations. He describes it simply, as a summary of what he has seen and observed: “Let do: This is the maxim, the principle of eternal truth that governments should never forget and that experience sanctions daily in this great country of American Democracy.”

When he left for Spain in September, 1835, his soul had become passionate with his mission of social redeemer, but he had not abandoned natural science altogether. He strengthened his mission knowing that progress in science favors the development of productive forces and its direct relationship with people’s happiness. On his journey through Saragossa, he makes note of its social backwardness and the aftermath of the civil war, contrastingly different from North American society.

A liberal mindset with socialist leanings began to change when faced with what he saw in the United States. His mind evolved regarding the struggle between the proletariat and landowners and became evidently in favor of progressive ideas, of the

No work of such magnitude had ever been undertaken abroad under such circumstances. Once the material had been compiled, the author was allowed to travel to Europe and the publishing project approved with a subscription of 300 copies.

Many scientists considered this work among the most valuable of the XIX Century. It was the first published by the Spanish monarchy in the peninsula, the Philippine Islands and Puerto Rico. The economic-political section of “The Natural History of the Canary Islands” by Webb and Beethelat is incomplete.

HISTORY A report dated February 15, 1851, spoke of a section missing from Volume XII. In another report dated February 5, 1855, for a proposed bill to obtain payment to finish the work, la Sagra says the following: “This undertaking, gentlemen, which I bring before you, is certainly superior to the strength of a man, an undertaking which could only be entrusted to a scientific committee made up of men as active as they are intelligent. The delegates well know that I began this work with the enthusiasm of youth, without government sponsorship, during my twelve-year residence in the Island of Cuba, without payment of one single real for this immense work, with nothing but the payment of my salary as professor. I was, therefore, enthusiastic in this task that has flogged my strength.

It is my own fault, for not complaining to anyone.”

The presentation was extremely long and we will summarize it for you, emphasizing the slowness of the publishing process and the frequent interruptions. No order from the Ministry of the Treasury was adhered to promptly. You can easily understand the concessions made by and the grief of this great man upon finding himself penniless at the very moment contracts were sold. This happened time and time again.

La Sagra states: “Such was the inertia at the Ministry of the Treasury, such were the abuses and disorder, that on one occasion there were no issues distributed for three years. I have painfully seen that there isn’t an issue in provincial libraries, His Majesty has not been given one, neither has any Ministry. In the home of some officers, I have seen children tacking color prints on walls with sealing wax, the birds of Cuba cut out and placed among the straw and trees of crèches at Christmas time.”

As a matter of curiosity, in a note written by the Overseas Director on June 25, 1853, reference is made to the tally made by Don Miguel Ginestá, who had been hired by la Sagra and the Ministry of the Treasury to bind the issues. On some of the original issues you can see Ginestá’s quality of work, which turned into a family tradition for generations. Eudaldo Ginestá, bibliographer, bookbinder and collector, a descendant of this XIX Century Havana family, lived in New York for many years; we were friends and shared our knowledge about la Sagra’s work, as did Carlos Ripoll, recently deceased. The complete works of la Sagra, which Ripoll had purchased from Ginestá, was donated to the library at Florida International University.

Several of la Sagra’s complete works in public and private collections of Miami’s exile community were part of the pillage of Cuba’s national patrimony after 1959. Fortunately, we have been able to rescue part of it, and it has been donated to the Cuban Collection at the University of Miami, to the Colonial Museum of Florida and to Herencia Cultural Cubana. We dream of taking others back to a free and democratic Cuba.

One complete work, as referenced by Ripoll in this magazine, was sold by Christie’s in 1999 (see photo). It belonged to King Leopold I of Belgium and it is one of the ten complete works currently known to exist in the entire world. I believe this could be the same set offered to me on June 20, 1988 by International Bookfinders, Inc. of California, for $148,200. Otherwise, this would add one more complete set to the ones mentioned.

The scientific mission entrusted to La Sagra during his Cuban period, took on a different scope and significance during the second half of his life, when his undertaking turned into a providential work, at the service of humanity.

His knowledge of Cuba, of its beauty, flora, geography, population and resources cast a light upon an unknown facet of the New World.

The articles by Marcos Antonio Ramos and by Carlos Ripoll, and my notes on his work present, I believe, a good outline of this Galician intellectual who, albeit Spanish, felt deeply towards Cuba and, like Humboldt, made a magnificent contribution towards research in agriculture, natural history, science, cartography and statistics, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of his lifetime work.

His comments on society and sociology represent, without a doubt, the most novel part of his work.

I end with comments by Moreno Fraginals and Guiy Bourdé, very descriptive in regards to this figure with a universal outlook: “He was radical in his 20’s, liberal in his 30’s, moderate in his 40’s and conservative in his 50’s.” - Moreno Fraginals.

ne of the most important critics of this century, José María Chacón y Calvo, said in 1958 that the Historia física, política y natural de la Isla de Cuba, by Ramón de la Sagra “was among the greatest rarities of the Cuban bibliography.”1 The thirteen volumes of this work, published in Paris in the middle of the nineteenth century, were destined to become a singular case among books about the island. Max Henríquez Ureña, the historian of Cuban letters, wrote in 1963: “La Sagra had to overcome numerous difficulties to achieve publication of his work in separate pamphlets that began appearing in 1837 and continued for a period of twenty years….Since it was edited under such unusual circumstances, it is extremely difficult today to find a complete collection of the twelve volumes that it comprises.”2

The Sagra’s History Carlos Ripoll

When La Sagra began publication of his extensive work, the only objective, scientific information about Cuba was Baron von Humboldt’s Essai politique sur l’ile de Cuba (published in 1826 and translated to Spanish in 1827)3 and Robert Jameson’s Lettres from Havana, during 1820, Containing an Account of the Present State of the Island of Cuba, and Observations of the Slave Trade.4 However, because of the limited scope of these earlier works and the paucity of sources consulted by their authors, neither of them could, as did La Sagra, “make the character and importance of Cuba known to the educated public of Europe and America.”5 For this reason, and because of the historical content of La Sagra’s work, Emilio González López, the foremost biographer of La Sagra, justifiably refers to him as “an innovator, a pioneer, in the studies of Cuba’s history.”6

La Sagra’s approach to history can be said to place him within the positivist school. In fact, Chacón y Calvo has said that this work of La Sagra demonstrates “a distant prefiguring of the Tainean method.”7 For Hippolite Taine, race, milieu and nature determined the course of events, and all analysis had to be based on the broadest documentary evidence. The 13 volumes of La Sagra’s Historia serve as an extensive compilation of what had gone into the makeup of Cuba: the ethnic composition of the population, slavery, government, politics, economy, agriculture, commerce, climate, geography, flora, fauna, and more, all of which is presented with a rigorous methodology through statistical tables, maps, detailed descriptions, and drawings from nature faithful in color and dimension. It is logical, in consequence, that this work has deserved the praise of specialists from the time of its publication to the present. In the middle of the last century the greatest scholar of his time, Domingo del Monte, considered the work of La Sagra “one of the worthiest on the island of Cuba,”8 and in 1970, in the course of an

international conference in the Library of Congress dealing with the works on Cuba from part of its collections, Carmelo Mesa Lago, economist and historian, said that the first part (vols. 1 and 2) of the Historia was “one of the most valuable entries in the collection.”9 In his Historiografía de Cuba, José Manuel Pérez Cabrera calls it “an indispensable source and guide for our scholars.”10 It is not surprising the in our days such work might be considered a real rarity since shortly after its publication, La Sagra himself spoke of how few were the complete sets that were available. In 1861, he said: My voluminous work, printed with ill-conceived luxury, suffered during its publication singular losses in the text that condemned it to be little known even before it was finished.

The copies that the government generously procured in order to protect them were, for the most part, incompletely distributed.

Those who had taken subscriptions in the island grew weary of waiting for the end of such a protracted, slow, and irregular process of publication. And of the copies that I had reserved for myself, only very few could be completed, since a lot was lost in the warehouses of the editors during the long years that were required to finish the publication. As a result of this conjunction of unfortunate causes, it came to pass that the Spanish edition of the Cuban work was little known, and that its future circulation would be limited to the reduced number of copies that I am today finishing for the government by means of a partial reprinting of the text and of the plates that are missing.11 The Historia appeared in 190 installments, many of which were lost. During the printing of the work, La Sagra was forced to publish four pamphlets to explain the delays and the losses. In one, issued in 1855, he talks of the difficulties that he was facing, and confesses that “the

greatest part (of the copies ordered by the government) had been burnt or lost.”12 The Spanish government had commissioned La Sagra to prepare 300 copies of his monumental work. To this effect, in 1844 the Cuban treasury had given him $57,500, and between 1835 and 1856 paid him a salary of $2,500 a year, that is, a total of $110,000.13 In the middle of the last century, referring to this munificence of the colonial government, the Portuguese scholar Vizconde de Satarem, expressed that “The Island of Cuba has paid more than 150,000 francs for the two volumes of the magnificent work published by our colleague in the Royal Institute of France, Don Ramón de la Sagra.”14 It is impossible to estimate the number of complete collections that exist of this “fundamental work on Cuba that is today so rare and therefore so expensive,” as it was described in 1934 by the historian Gerardo Castellanos,15 but everything seems to indicate that they are very few.

With such a limited number available to scholars, it is easy to understand why critic Raimundo Lazo wrote in 1965 that La Sagra’s Historia física, política y natural de la Isla de Cuba is “as compendious as it is Encuadernación de uno de little known.”16 sus volúmenes originales.

Binding of one of his original Jorge Aguayo puvolumes blished the definitive study of La Sagra’s Historia in 1946, when he was assistant director of the University of Havana Library. After reading the volumes available in Cuba, the collection at the Library of Congress, and referring to all the bibliographies that describe the work, he wrote:

pesar de que gradualmente ha ido aumentando el reconocimiento a uno de los personajes que más contribuciones hiciera a los estudios sobre el país cubano, la ciencia y la cultura en general en nuestro siglo XIX, el esfuerzo por hacer resaltar su persona y su obra debe aumentar según nos dedicamos a tributar un reconocimiento mayor.

Como tantos otros españoles que se radicaron en la entonces española Isla de Cuba, don Ramón de la Sagra procedía de Galicia, más específicamente de La Coruña, y logró concluir satisfactoriamente sus estudios científicos en la Universidad de Madrid. Había ido a la mayor de las Antillas con sólo 23 años de edad a ocupar una plaza administrativa en la industria tabacalera, pero fue eventualmente designado para dirigir el Jardín Botánico de La Habana y ocupar la cátedra de Botánica del mismo. No sólo se desempeñó como científico y educador, sino como escritor y diputado en Cortes.

Tres veces estuvo en Cuba, la primera vez por cinco meses (1821), la segunda con una estancia mucho mayor (1823-1835) y la tercera por diez meses (1859-1860). Como señaló sabiamente Paul Estrade, don Ramón “no traficó, no se enriqueció, tampoco se acriolló. Sin embargo, Cuba se le pegó a la mente”. Era un español de cuerpo entero, pero Cuba pasó a ser parte integral de su vida. No se puede exigir a un español de su procedencia, formación e intereses, una posición política y social exactamente igual a la de muchos de sus amigos y adversarios cubanos.

Fueron muchos los que no le comprendieron, entre ellos algunos personajes ilustres de nuestra historia que sin embargo le elogiaron, como Domingo del Monte, Felipe Poey y otros. Se conoce en buena parte su polémica con José Antonio Saco sobre la esclavitud y la economía insular. Algunos le llamaron “humillador de Cuba” (Fernando Ortiz, por ejemplo). Aurelio Mitjans, estudioso de nuestras instituciones educativas, fue aún más fuerte. Podemos leer en colecciones de revistas de la época y de períodos posteriores algunas críticas muy severas. Hasta fue considerado como ignorante y simulador, opiniones vertidas por un eximio historiador tan reconocido como Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring. Opiniones más objetivas procedieron en algún Fernando Ortiz momento de Antonio Bachiller y Morales y hasta del mismo Fernando Ortiz, sin olvidar a Carlos de la Torre y a del Monte. Pero no se alejaron de la crítica, ni modificaron todas las objeciones que se le hicieron.

Sin embargo, su rehabilitación se ha ido produciendo sin olvidar los aspectos políticos y personales de las controversias, así como los errores de La Sagra, pues nadie es perfecto. Un estudio más completo nos ayudaría a comprender mejor las dificultades. Por ejemplo, su relación con Saco se entiende mejor cuando se tiene en cuenta que éste sostuvo con La Sagra una polémica sobre José María Heredia, no muy diferente a las opiniones finales de Domingo del Monte con el eximio poeta que había sido su gran amigo y al que llegó a llamar “el ángel caído”. No puede olvidarse que algunos llamaron a don Ramón “negrero, farsante, plagiario, anticubano…”. Más allá de entrar a profundidad en tales cuestiones,

HISTORIA conociendo la exageración y las pasiones que conlleva nuestro origen hispano y el de otros pueblos, su legado es absolutamente obligatorio como obra de consulta, y su obra científica, así como la verdadera creación del Jardín Botánico, hasta trabajos sobre física, geografía, flora y fauna cubanas, resisten sin mucha dificultad el juicio del tiempo.

La Sagra trabajó en su nativa España, en Francia y en Cuba, así como visitó Estados Unidos.

Escribió copiosamente en francés, idioma que dominaba perfectamente, lo cual hizo conocer su obra en la comunidad científica internacional, que en aquella época, como en otras actividades, reconocía la lengua de Francia como un idioma fundamental. Y Ramón de la Sagra fue aceptado como excelente traductor del francés hasta por los mismos que tradujeron algunos de sus escritos a esa lengua. No debe extrañar la existencia de “sagristas” entre los estudiosos galos que hicieron posible una “Historia de las Antillas Hispánicas”.

Emilio Roig de Hasta muchos de sus trabajos en la lengua de Cervantes habían sido publicados en París.

Leuchsering Sus actividades culturales y científicas en Cuba, país donde estudió intensamente la flora y la economía, son cada vez más apreciadas. Se buscó muchos enemigos de distinción social con sus propuestas sobre la eliminación de la esclavitud y del monocultivo, asuntos defendidos por muchos de nuestros compatriotas de la primera mitad del siglo XIX. Su defensa de un proletariado libre que recibiera salarios y sus sugerencias sobre la creación de industrias rurales fueron rechazadas por muchos. Defendió la inmigración china a la Isla.

Hasta llegó a abogar por el establecimiento de ciertas formas de propiedad colectiva entre las clases más desposeídas. Independientemente de opiniones sobre las anteriores materias, debe tenerse en cuenta cómo eran interpretadas por sus contemporáneos.

Las opiniones pasan, la obra queda. En Francia, en el Museum de Historia Natural, en el Archivo Nacional, en la Biblioteca Nacional, en el Instituto y en infinidad de archivos privados, están sus cartas, documentos, planchas, mapas, planos, memorias. Una biobibliografía suya, la primera, fue publicada en 1858 en el “Dictionnaire Universel des Barón de Humbolt Contemporains”.

El ilustre director del periódico “El Demócrito”, fundador de “Anales de ciencias, agricultura, comercio y artes” nos dejó, y lo menciono sólo con el propósito de ofrecer una idea de la extensión de sus labores, su “Memoria de las observaciones meteorológicas y físicas hechas en la navegación de La Coruña a La Habana” (1823), “Discurso leído en la apertura pública de la cátedra de Botánica Agrícola” (1824), “Principios fundamentales para servir de introducción a la escuela de botánica agrícola del Jardín Botánico de La Habana”, “Manual de Botánica Médica e Industrial para el uso de los habitantes de la Isla de Cuba y demás Antillas” (1827), “Historia económico-política y estadística de la Isla de Cuba, o sea de sus progresos en la población, la agricultura, el comercio, la agricultura y las rentas”(1831), “Cartilla para el cultivo del cacao en la Isla de Cuba”(1833), “Historia física, política y natural de la Isla de Cuba” (1837), “Tablas necrológicas del cólera-morbus en la ciudad de La Habana y sus arrabales” (1833), “Noticias de las resoluciones y reclamaciones concernientes a la obra titulada Historia física, política y natural de la Isla de Cuba” (1849), José María Heredia y una larga lista de contribuciones, sin olvidar otros estudios sobre la flora y la fauna de Cuba, sus “Estudios Coloniales” (1845), su bien conocida obra “Cuba” (1860) y sus cartas a Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, Marcos Antonio incluidas en el “Álbum cubano de lo bueno y lo bello”.

Ramos. Historiador, En publicaciones de Ginebra, Madrid, París y La Habana, y en sus trabajos periodista y teólogo y ponencias para sociedades científicas de todo tipo, quedan gran parte de cubano. Profesor sus esfuerzos de investigación y divulgación, algunos de los cuales fueron Emérito de Florida Center for publicados con sus seudónimos “Unos amigos de la buena opinión Theological Studies. habanera”, “El Ermitaño del Campo de Marte” y otros.

Investigador del Instituto de Estudios Se ha dicho que aspiraba a una Cuba española. Él era un español de las Cubanos y Cubanoamericanos de UM y primeras décadas del siglo XIX. Independientemente de respetar miembro de la Real Academia Española de Madrid. Co-autor del Vol. VII de la comentarios críticos sobre su obra y hasta sobre su persona, el creador del “Historia general de América Latina” Jardín Botánico de La Habana, con Cristóbal Colón, el Barón de publicada recientemente por la Humboldt y nuestros compatriotas Fernando Ortiz y Leví Marrero, fue uno UNESCO. Vicepresidente del Comité de los descubridores de Cuba ante un público universal. Honor y gloria a Ejecutivo de Herencia Cultural Cubana y Editor General de la revista Herencia su memoria.

espite the fact that gratitude has gradually increased for one of the figures who has most contributed to studies made about the nation, science and general culture of Cuba during our XIX Century, we must make a greater effort in placing more emphasis on his persona and his work, striving to give him greater recognition.

Like so many other Spaniards who settled in the then-Spanish Island of Cuba, Don Ramón de la Sagra hailed from Galicia, specifically from La Coruña, and had satisfactorily completed his scientific studies at the University of Madrid. He had gone to the greater of the Antilles, at the young age of 23, to take a managerial post in the tobacco industry but was eventually appointed director of the Botanical Garden of Havana and professor of Botany. He not only worked as a scientist and educator, but as a writer and Deputy to the Court, as well.

He was in Cuba three times, the first time for five months (1821), the second for a much longer stay (1823-1835) and the third for ten months (1859-1860). Like Paul Estrade so wisely mentioned, Don Ramón “did not go into trade, did not get rich, and neither did he adopt native ways (acriollarse). However, Cuba stuck to his mind.” He was a full-fledged Spaniard, but Cuba became an integral part of his life. One cannot demand from a Spaniard of his background, upbringing and interests, a political and social position identical to the one of his many Cuban friends and foes.

Many did not understand him, among them some of our most illustrious historical figures, such as Domingo del Monte, Felipe Poey and others who nevertheless praised him. His disagreements with José Antonio Saco regarding slavery and the economy of the island are well known. Some referred to him as the “humilliator of Cuba” (Fernando Ortíz, for instance). Aurelio Mitjans, a scholar from our educational institutions, went even further.

We can read very harsh criticisms of him in period magazines and in newspapers of a later date. He was even considered an ignoramus and a fake, an opinion expressed by distinguished historian Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring. More objective opinions came later from Antonio Bachiller y Morales and even from Fernando Ortíz himself, while not forgetting Carlos de la Torre and Domingo del Monte. But they did not stray from their criticism, nor did they change all their objections.

However, his reinstatement has come about without forgetting the political and personal aspects of the controversy, as well as la Sagra’s mistakes, since no one is perfect. A more in depth study would help us understand these difficulties better. For instance, his relationship with Saco is better understood when we remember that his argument with la Sagra concerned José María Heredia, and was not very different from the ultimate opinion of Domingo del Monte regarding the distinguished poet who had been his great friend and to whom he referred as “the fallen angel.” One cannot forget that some called Don Ramón “a slave trader, charlatan, plagiarist, anti-Cuban…” Beyond going into great depths about these issues, knowing the exaggeration and passion which is part of our Hispanic heritage

HISTORY and that of other countries, his legacy is compulsory reading as a consulting tool, as is his scientific work; so is the real creation of the Botanical Garden, and even his work regarding physics, geography, Cuban flora and fauna, which have withstood the test of time.

La Sagra worked in his native Spain, France and Cuba, and also visited the United States.

He wrote profusely in French, a language he had mastered perfectly, which made his works known throughout the international scientific community, since at the time, French was the lingua franca in many fields. Ramón de la Sagra was recognized as an excellent French translator, including those who translated his work into that language. The existence of “sagristas” among the Gaul literati who made possible a “History of the Hispanic Antilles,” should not surprise anyone. Even many of his works in Cervantes’ language had been published in Paris.

His cultural and scientific activities in Cuba, a country where he studied the flora and the Antonio Bachiller y economy in depth, are increasingly recognized. He made many socially distinguished Morales enemies with his propositions to abolish slavery and monoculture, issues defended by many of our compatriots of the first half of the XIX Century. His defense of a wage-earning free proletariat and his suggestions regarding the creation of rural industries were rejected by many. He defended Chinese immigration to the island. He even espoused establishing certain forms of collective property among the poorer classes. Independent of opinions regarding the previous issues, we should keep in mind how they were interpreted by his contemporaries.

Opinions slip away, works remain. In France, at the Museum of Natural History, at the National Archives, at the National Library, at the Institute and in countless private collections, his letters, documents, plates, maps, charts and memoirs remain. His first biography was published in 1858 in the “Dictionnaire Universel des Contemporains.”

The famous director of the newspaper, “The Democrat,” founder of “Annals of Science, Agriculture, Commerce and the Arts,” left behind, and I mention this for the sole purpose Levi Marrero of giving a notion of his wide-ranging works, his “Memoirs of the Meteorological and Physical Observations Made while Navigating from La Coruña to Havana” (1823), “Speech read at the public installation of the chair of Agricultural Botany” (1824), “Basic Principles to Serve as an Introduction to the School of Agricultural Botany at the Botanical Garden of Havana,” “Manual of Medical and Industrial Botany to be Used by the Inhabitants of the Island of Cuba and Other Antilles” (1827), “Economic-Political History and Statistics of the Island of Cuba: Its Progress in Population, Agriculture, Commerce and Revenue” (1831), “Primer for Growing Cacao in the Island of Cuba” (1833), “The Physical, Political and Natural History of the Island of Cuba” (1837), “Mortality Tables of Cholera-Morbus in the City of Havana and its Outskirts” (1833), “Notices of the Resolutions and Claims Regarding the Work Titled ‘The Physical, Political and Natural History of the Island of Cuba’” (1849), plus a long list of contributions, including other studies on the flora and Alexander Von Humbolt fauna of Cuba, his “Colonial Studies” (1845), his well-known work, “Cuba” (1860) and his letters to Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, which are part of “Cuban Album of What Is Good and Beautiful.”

His efforts in research and propagation, some of which were published Marcos Antonio under his pseudonyms “Friends of quality opinion of Havana” and “The Ramos. Cuban hermit of Campo de Marte” and others, remain in publications in Geneva, historian, journalist and theologian.

Madrid, Paris and Havana, and in his works and papers for scientific Professor Emeritus societies of all kinds. at the Florida Center It has been said that he yearned for a Spanish Cuba. He was a Spaniard for Theological Studies. Researcher at the UM Institute during the first decades of the XIX Century. uando el coruñés Ramón de la Sagra (1798-1871) se propuso compilar su monumental enciclopedia de Cuba –la Historia física, política y natural de la isla de Cuba con preciosas ilustraciones– era extremadamente difícil para un cubano conocer la cartografía histórica de su país.

Ninguno de los importantes mapas manuscritos que a través de los 350 años precedentes se habían configurado sobre la isla, y bien pocos de los mapas impresos, se encontraban en Cuba o se habían reproducido. Además, nadie antes había intentado hacer una compilación de los mapas más significativos para explicar el desarrollo cartográfico de la isla y trazar cómo, progresivamente, nuestro contorno se fue conociendo cada vez mejor. Esa primicia le corresponde a Don Ramón.

Es para mí evidente que La Sagra logró hacer esta importante contribución porque realizó su obra en París.

Primero, la capital de Francia contaba con importantísimas bibliotecas y archivos y allí encontró la mayoría de los mapas que mandó a copiar. En segundo lugar, a mediados del siglo XIX París era la meca de la litografía, técnica de reproducir imágenes descubierta en Alemania en 1796 por Aloys Senefelder (1771-1834), pero perfeccionada por los galos.

Con estos dos instrumentos a su alcance –mapas disponibles y litógrafos competentes— La Sagra emprendió su obra. Y en 1842 aparece su original volumen el Atlas Geográfico.

En su sección histórica el Atlas consiste en 15 mapas de Cuba y 3 de La Habana (seis de manuscritos, doce de impresos) y cubre el período de 1500 a 1695.1 Sospecho que todos se encontraban en colecciones parisinas, públicas o privadas.2 Con relación al pionero mapa de Juan de La Cosa, es interesante resaltar el protagonismo del propio La Sagra en su recuperación. Esta joya –robada de España hacía varios siglos– la había adquirido en 1832 de un bouquiniste parisino el barón Charles Walckenaer (1771-1852), embajador de Holanda en Francia. A su muerte, se subastó el mapa en París en 1853 y fue La Sagra quien alertó al gobierno español de esta oportunidad única y quien pujó los 4.321 (suma importante entonces) a nombre de la Reina.

Desde entonces se encuentra en el Museo Naval de Madrid.

Al coincidir La Sagra con Walckenaer en París, pudo conocer la pieza y hacerla reproducir.

Además de divulgar mapas antiguos de Cuba, La Sagra añadió también cuatro cartas contemporáneas, dos de la isla, una de la región occidental y una de La Habana. Como el Atlas apareció en ediciones de París y Madrid simultáneamente, estos mapas se imprimieron con títulos en francés o castellano, respectivamente.

Los mapas del Atlas por razones obvias se concentran en la silueta de Cuba. Por ello, cuando la parte cubana es sólo una sección del mapa (sea del mundo, continente, o Caribe) sólo se reproduce ese fragmento. Para ahorrar espacio, muchas veces aparecen varios mapas en la misma hoja.

LISTA DE LOS MAPAS. En la lista que sigue, los mapas aparecen en orden cronológico, señalando en qué lámina del Atlas están reproducidos. Excepto por el español de la Cosa, los autores son de Italia, Holanda, Bélgica, Portugal y Francia, lo cual refleja bien la contribución de otras naciones en la cartografía cubana. Las citas de páginas se refieren al volumen del texto (Introducción Geográfica, tomo I, 1ra. parte). Las imágenes pueden consultarse en internet.3 1 Entre 1500 y 1600 se hicieron al menos 715 mapas donde aparece Cuba. La selección de apenas once de estos por La Sagra es, claro, sólo un botón de muestra. La lista completa aparece en mi trabajo Cuba in old maps, Miami, Fla., Historical Museum of Southern Florida, 1999, pp. 36-54.

hen the native of Coruña, Ramón de la Sagra (1798-1871) set out to write his monumental encyclopedia of Cuba – the Physical, Political and Natural History of the Island of Cuba, with beautiful illustrations – it was extraordinarily difficult for a Cuban to know the historical cartography of his country.

None of the important manuscripts throughout the preceding 350 years had ever configured the island properly, and very few printed maps were reproduced or available in Cuba. In addition, no one before had ever made a compilation of the most significant maps to explain the map-making development of the island, or drawn how, progressively, our contours had become better known. This early result belongs to Don Ramón.

I am not surprised that la Sagra was able to make this important contribution because he did his work in Paris.

First, the capital of France had very important libraries and archives and works and it was there that he found the majority of the maps he ordered copied. In second place, mid XIX Century Paris was the most noted place for lithography, the technique of reproducing prints discovered in Germany in 1796 by Aloys Senefelder (1771-1834), but perfected by the Gauls. With these tools at hand – available maps and competent lithographers – la Sagra began his work. In 1842, his original volume, the Geographical Atlas, was published. In its historical section, the Atlas consisted of 15 maps of Cuba and 3 of Havana (6 from manuscripts, 12 from prints) and covered the period from 1500 to 1695. I suspect all were found in Parisian collections, public or private.

As regards Juan de la Cosa’s pioneer map, it is interesting to point out the role of la Sagra himself in its recovery. This jewel – stolen from Spain several centuries before – had been acquired by a Parisian bouquiniste, Baron Charles Walckenaer (1771-1852), ambassador of Holland in France. At his death, the map was auctioned in Paris in 1853 and it was la Sagra who alerted the Spanish government of this unique opportunity and who bid the 4,321 (an important sum at the time) on behalf of the Queen. Ever since, it has been at the Naval Museum of Madrid. When la Sagra met Walckenaer in Paris, he was able to see the map and have it reproduced.

HISTORY four contemporary charts, two of the island, one of the western region and one of Havana. Since the Atlas appeared in editions in Paris and Madrid simultaneously, these maps were printed with titles in French or Spanish, accordingly.

The maps from the Atlas, for obvious reasons, stress Cuba’s silhouette. Therefore, when the Cuban part is only a section of the map (be it of the world, the continent, or the Caribbean) only said fragment is reproduced. In order to save space, many maps appear on the same page. _ Between 1500 and 1600 Cuba appeared in at least 715 maps. The selection of barely eleven of them by la Sagra is, of course, only a speck of the lot. The complete list appears in my work, Cuba in Old Maps, Miami, Florida, Historical Museum of Southern Florida, 1999, pp. 36-54. _ It remains an oddity that a Spanish researcher residing in Europe, and whose project was financed by the mother country, did not include any antique map from Spanish archives.

E

l uso de una cadena para cerrar la entrada de puertos o impedir el paso por ríos o estuarios tiene antiguos precedentes en la historia militar y, aunque rudimentario, resultó eficaz en obstruir el paso de embarcaciones de la era de vela. El entorno hostil que amenazó a La Habana en los primeros siglos de su existencia dio lugar a que desde muy temprano se considerara cerrar la entrada del puerto por medio de una cadena extendida entre los fuertes del Morro y de la Punta.

Los problemas comenzaron cuando se desató una guerra con Francia al ascender Carlos I a la corona de España en 1517. Los corsarios franceses convirtieron a las colonias españolas en objeto de sus ataques iniciando un largo periodo de intranquilidad. Las incursiones amenazaron a La Habana directamente por primera vez en 1538, cuando un navío francés se posesionó de la ciudad por quince días saqueando y llevándose las campanas de la iglesia. En 1555 la ciudad sufrió el asalto más sonado de la época cuando el corsario Jacques de Sores la ocupó por un mes arrasando y quemando todo a su alcance.

A raíz de estas agresiones, Felipe II accedió al trono español en 1556.

A diferencia de su padre, Felipe II concedió a los asuntos de América una atención que buscaba cómo proteger sus colonias cada vez más productivas contra enemigos cada vez más numerosos. Sus disposiciones para defender las Indias incluyeron el sistema de flotas para trasladar los caudales de América a España y la fortificación de los principales puertos coloniales. En América estas medidas tuvieron su mayor manifestación en La Habana, al convertirse en el principal punto de concentración de las flotas antes de emprender la travesía oceánica y con la construcción de las murallas de la ciudad, y los castillos de Los Tres Reyes del Morro y de San Salvador de la Punta.

Aun así, nunca parecían suficientes las defensas de la ciudad y, a pesar de todas las fortificaciones, el canal de la entrada del puerto daba acceso directo a un enemigo audaz al fondo de la bahía y al interior de la ciudad. / VOL. XVIII • No.2 • 08-12

Las amenazas resucitaron con la llegada de un nuevo adversario, cuando a la rivalidad contra Francia se sumó la de Inglaterra, quien odiaba a Felipe II por católico casi tanto como le envidiaba sus minas americanas. Tras los ataques de Francis Drake a Valparaíso y Callao en 1577, sonó otra vez el estado de alarma en los puertos de América, estrenando el desafío del nuevo rival. Anticipando la necesidad apremiante de una cadena para cerrar el puerto, el Gobernador Diego Fernández de Quiñones por primera vez trató el tema en una carta de 1582 a Felipe II, que instaba: “La boca de este puerto ques desde el Morro a la Punta tiene gran nesçesidad de que se çierre con cadena e esto puedese fazer con facilidad sin mucha costa porque cadena no es posible que dure ni se puede gobernar para el çerrar e abrir e puedeçe façer una cadena de troços de madera eslabonados con sus eslabones de metal fuertes…e esto puedese façer con mucha facilidad mandando V. M. se traigan de españa estos eslabones e planchas fechos porque aca no ay horden para poderse fazer…”

Nuevas agresiones de Drake contra Santo Domingo en diciembre de 1585 y contra Cartagena en enero de 1586 crearon ansiedad que éste cayera sobre La Habana, dando nuevos ímpetus al proyecto de la cadena. En febrero de 1586 se estaba trabajando apresuradamente en la fabricación de una de “madera y hierro” que tenía a su cargo Juan Bautista de Rojas, tesorero de la Isla. El día 2 de mayo de 1586 una Junta de Guerra acordó “que la cadena de tozas que está hecha para çerrar el puerto se asiente e ponga en perfiçion con toda brevedad.” Se había logrado justo a tiempo pues el 27 de mayo se presentó Drake con catorce buques y desfiló confiadamente a vista de La Habana hasta el 4 de julio, cuando se retiró sin intentar ataque ni desembarque alguno.

La confección de la cadena reportada por la Junta no escapó el escrutinio de Felipe II quien, pasada la emergencia de Drake, ordenó hacer en Sevilla una de “yerro fuerte”, al parecerle insuficiente una de madera. Pero el ingeniero Bautista Antonelli, quien gozaba de la confianza del monarca, se atrevió a objetar ese diseño en su carta de marzo de 1593 al Rey, proponiendo en su lugar “que la cadena que cierra el Puerto no debe ser de hierro por lo que se consume y come el herrumbe, y si fundirla en pedazos de cobre ajuntándolos en la misma fundición, y así sería incorruptible y perpetua”. La sugerencia de Antonelli prevaleció y en febrero de 1597 el Capitán General Juan Maldonado reportó al Consejo de Indias: “Tanbien ynbio un modelo de la manera que se façe la cadena para cerrar la voca deste puerto que sera fortisima e de mucha dura. Las vigas son de a beynte e dos pies de largo e casi dos en quadra. Los nudos i engaçes de yerro son tan fuertes que cada uno dellos ques lo que abraza dos vigas e los çinchos e pernos pesan tres quintales.”

La guerra de España con los Países Bajos agregó a Holanda como enemigo, quien pasó a ser la peor amenaza al principio del siglo XVII. En junio de 1626 se presentó frente a La Habana la flota del corsario holandés Vaude Vin Enrique, quien, al darse cuenta de lo bien fortificada que estaba, abandonó el sitio. Esta desagradable visita reanudó interés en la cadena, y en septiembre de 1627 el Cabildo de La Habana le reportó al entonces Rey, Felipe IV, que se había cerrado la boca del puerto con una fuerte cadena diseñada por el Capitán General Lorenzo Cabrera y hecha con trabajo voluntario, la cual se construyó “de maderos tan gruesos que tienen tres cuartas en cuadro y el herraje, tornillos y eslabones con que se ligan pesan a quatro quintales…sin que la manufactura ni madera aya costado un real”. Cabrera recomendó que los tornillos se continuaran haciendo de hierro y no de bronce, por ser el hierro bien labrado más duradero y menos costoso y menos vidrioso que el bronce, y también sugirió que la madera fuera de cedro grueso sometido cada dos años a fuego lento y brea para su mayor duración.

En junio de 1762 regresaron los ingleses. El 6 de junio apareció ante el litoral habanero el armamento más poderoso que jamás atacara una posesión española de ultramar. George Keppel, III conde de Albemarle, llegaba al mando de 45 buques de guerra y 168 barcos auxiliares que transportaban 14,000 marineros e infantes de marina y 12,826 soldados con el objetivo de apoderarse de la ciudad. Ante tal poderío, la Junta que dirigía la defensa de la ciudad decidió adoptar una postura defensiva a fin de prolongar el sitio a toda costa con la esperanza de recibir refuerzos. Se tomaron las medidas, luego controvertidas, de no sacar la Armada a combatir para así poder destinar sus dotaciones a defender las fortalezas de la ciudad, de hundir tres navíos en el canal de la entrada, y de cerrar la entrada de la bahía con la cadena.

La cadena que se usó en esta ocasión había sido hecha por disposición de la Armada antes que llegaran los enemigos anticipando la posibilidad de una guerra. Era una “cadena de cables aboyada sobre doce tozas (grandes piezas de madera) y otras de hierro sobre el doble número de tozas”. Como tozas se usaron unas piezas de madera llamadas vasos que se utilizaban para botar los navíos del astillero al agua. La cadena tenía una pasarela de tablas colocada sobre ella que permitía cruzarla a pie de un extremo a otro. Tratando de huir a través de ese precario puente se ahogaron la mayoría de los defensores del Morro el día que fue tomado. Como refuerzo adicional, la cadena estaba afianzada por un ancla que se extendía en dirección al mar abierto para así mejor resistir el impacto de cualquier embarcación que tratara de forzarla viniendo de esa dirección.

A pesar de estar aboyada la cadena no flotaba y descansaba al colgar produciendo una curvatura suficiente para que pudieran pasar sobre ella hasta naves de gran calado. Al ser estirada dejaba de tener la curvatura y entonces daba la impresión de flotar. En su extremo próximo al castillo de la Punta existía un aparejo de poleas y correas con una gruesa cuerda de cáñamo atada a un gancho que se conectaba a los vasos. Este se podía estirar o relajar dándole a la cadena la profundidad necesaria para admitir el paso o cerrar la entrada al puerto. Esa versatilidad fue útil durante el sitio de 1762. El 29 de junio la goleta Nuestra Señora del Rosario burló en bloqueo naval británico y pudo entrar al puerto con un cargamento de brea y alquitrán para la Armada. Tres días después su intrépido capitán, Joseph García Calderón, salió eludiendo siete fragatas inglesas y desempeñó exitosamente la misión de alertar un convoy que zarpó de Veracruz para que no continuara su travesía hacia La Habana debido al asedio que sufría la ciudad.

No se sabe en qué lugar se amarraron las primeras cadenas de los siglos XVI y XVII, aunque éstas ya aparecen trazadas entre los fuertes del Morro y de la Punta en una lámina del ingeniero Juan Bautista Antonelli, de 1591, y en un plano del ingeniero Cristóbal de Roda, de 1603. Para afincar la de 1762 se empotraron varios cañones de desecho de grueso calibre en los arrecifes de ambas orillas de la entrada al puerto, frente al baluarte de Tejeda del Morro y a poca distancia del fuerte de la Punta en la banda opuesta. Los cañones permanecieron en su lugar hasta el siglo XX. Los de la banda del Morro se quitaron cuando cedió la roca en la cual estaban enterrados. Los de la Punta fueron rescatados cuando estaban a punto de ser dinamitados en 1943 por estorbar las obras de la ampliación del malecón del puerto y se trasladaron al interior del castillo de la Punta donde actualmente se exhiben.

El sitio de 1762 fue la última ocasión en la cual se desplegó la cadena. Bien sea por falta de osadía o por respeto a su efectividad, ninguno de los enemigos que acosó a la ciudad durante los tres primeros siglos de su existencia se atrevió a forzarla. La cadena del puerto de La Habana fue un éxito por las agresiones que evitó y merece ser recordada por los habaneros tanto como esas fortalezas más conocidas de la misma época que aún nos acompañan.

T

he use of a chain to close entry to ports or to stop passage through rivers or estuaries has ancient beginnings in military history and, although rudimentary, it was very effective in obstructing passage to sailing ships. The hostile environment that threatened Havana during the first centuries of its existence soon gave place to consider closing the entrance to the port with a chain extending between the forts of El Morro and La Punta.

Problems started when war broke out with France at the time Charles I received the crown of Spain in 1517. French corsairs turned Spanish colonies into targets of their attacks, beginning a long period of unrest. The raids threatened Havana directly for the first time in 1538, when a French vessel occupied the city for fifteen days, looting and stealing all the bells from its church. In 1555, the city suffered the most famous assault of its day when corsair Jacques de Sores occupied it for a month, leveling and burning everything within sight.

Shortly after these attacks, Phillip II ascended the Spanish throne in 1556. In contrast to his father, Phillip II paid close attention to the Americas and sought to protect his ever more productive colonies against their ever more numerous enemies. His arrangements to defend the Indies included a system of fleets to transport America’s riches to Spain, and the fortification of its main colonial ports. In America, these measures were mostly felt in Havana, becoming the main gathering point of the fleets before their transoceanic voyage, and with construction of the city’s walls and the castles of Los Tres Reyes del Morro and San Salvador de la Punta. Even then, the city’s defenses never seemed sufficient and, despite all the fortifications, the channel at the entrance of the port gave free direct access to a daring enemy, to the far reaches of the harbor and into the city.

II for being Catholic as much as it envied his mines in America. After Francis Drake’s attacks to Valparaiso and Callao in 1577, a state of alarm rang once again in American ports, initiating the challenge of a new rival. Anticipating the pressing need for a chain to close the port, Governor Diego Fernández de Quiñones dealt with the matter for the first time in a 1582 letter to Phillip II urging him: “The mouth of this port which is from El Morro to La Punta is in dire need of being closed with a chain and this can be easily done without too much cost because it is not possible for the chain to last nor can it be made to close and open, and it can be done with a chain of interlinked wood pieces with heavy links of metal…and this can be done very easily with Your Majesty ordering these links and plates brought from Spain ready-made since there is no order to be able to make….”

Drake’s new aggressions against Santo Domingo in December 1585 and Cartagena in January 1556 created anxiety that he would next attack Havana, giving new impetus to the chain project. In February 1586, work quickly began in the construction of a chain made of “wood and iron” under the supervision of Juan Bautista de Rojas, treasurer of the Island. On May 2, 1586, a War Junta agreed “that the chain of tozas made to close off the port be recorded and made perfectly as soon as possible.” It was completed in the nick of time since on May 27, Drake arrived with fourteen ships and confidently sailed within view of Havana until July 4, when he made a retreat without even attempting to attack or disembark.

The making of the chain as reported by the Junta did not escape the scrutiny of Phillip II who, once Drake’s menace ended, ordered one to be made in Seville, of “strong iron,” since he believed a wood chain would not do.

But engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli, who enjoyed the monarch’s trust, dared to object about the design in his letter of March 1593 to the King, suggesting instead “that the chain that closes the Port should not be of iron because it will waste away and rust, and casting it in pieces of copper, put together right at the foundry, and so it will be incorruptible and ever lasting.”

Antonelli’s suggestion prevailed, and in February 1597, Captain General Juan Maldonado reported to the Council of the Indies: “I also send a model of the way the chain is made to close the mouth of this port which shall be very strong and long-lasting. The beams are twenty-two feet in length and almost twosquare. The knots and couplings of iron are so strong that each one of them, which encompasses two beams, (sic) and the bands and bolts weigh three hundredweight.”

The war between Spain and the Low Countries added Holland as an enemy, which became its worse menace at the beginning of the XVII Century. In June 1626, the fleet of Dutch corsair Vaude Vin Hendrick appeared before Havana, who, upon realizing how well fortified it was, abandoned the siege. This disagreeable visit spurred interest in the chain, and in September 1627, the Cabildo (town council) of Havana reported to the King at the time, Phillip IV, that the mouth to the port had been closed with a strong chain designed by Captain General Lorenzo Cabrera and made with volunteer labor, which was constructed “of wood so thick that they are three spans square and the hardware, screws and chains with which they are joined weigh four hundredweight….without the manufacture nor the wood having cost a real (dime).” Cabrera recommended that the screws be made of iron and not bronze, since well-made iron is more durable and less costly and brittle than bronze, and he also suggested that the wood be thick cedar and treated by a slow fire and tar to make it longer lasting.

Faced with such power, the Junta, directing the defense of the city, decided to adopt a defensive stance in order to prolong the siege at all costs with the hope of receiving reinforcements. Measures were taken, later disputed, of not taking the Armada out to fight so as to use the crews in defense of the city’s fortresses, to sink three vessels in the entrance channel and to close the entrance to the bay with the chain.

The chain that was used then had been made by order of the Armada before the enemies arrived, anticipating the possibility of war. It was “a chain of cables buoyed over twelve tozas (large pieces of wood) and others of iron over double the amount of tozas.” For tozas, they employed pieces of wood named vasos which were used to launch ships from shipyards into the water. The chain had a board walkway over it, which allowed crossing on foot from one end to the other. Many of the defenders of El Morro, on the day it was seized, drowned while trying to flee through this precarious bridge. As additional reinforcement, the chain was held by an anchor which went out to the open sea in order to better resist the impact of any ship that tried to force its way while coming from that direction.

Despite being buoyed, the chain did not float while hanging, producing enough of a curve to allow ships of great depth to go over it. When made taut, the curvature would be gone, giving the impression of floating. On the end close to the castle of La Punta there was a rigging of weights and pulleys with a thick hemp rope attached to a hook connected to the vasos. This could be stretched or relaxed giving the chain the depth needed to allow or close entrance to the port. That versatility was useful during the siege of 1762. On June 29, the schooner Nuestra Señora del Rosario thwarted the British naval blockade and was able to enter the port with a cargo of tar and pitch for the Armada. Three days later, its intrepid Captain Joseph García Calderón, left while eluding seven English frigates and successfully carried out a mission to alert a convoy that had raised anchor in Veracruz so that it would not continue on its voyage to Havana due to the siege the city was under.

We do not know the place where the first chains were tied during the XVI and XVII Centuries, although they were drawn between the forts of El Morro and La Punta in an illustration by engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli, dated 1591, and in a plan of engineer Cristóbal de Roda, dated 1603. In order to affix the chain in 1762, several high caliber surplus cannons were embedded on the rocks of both shores of the port entrance, in front of the Tejeda bastion at El Morro and a short distance from the fort at La Punta on the opposite side. The cannons remained in place until the XX Century. Those from El Morro side were dislodged when the rocks in which they were set gave way. Those from La Punta were rescued just when they were about to be dynamited in 1943 for obstructing the widening of the sea wall of the port and taken inside La Punta castle where they are currently on exhibit.

During the siege of 1762 was the last time the chain was used. Whether by lack of courage or by respect for its effectiveness, none of the enemies that doggedly pursued the city during the first three centuries of its existence dared to force it. The chain of the port of Havana was a success for all the attacks avoided and deserves to be remembered by habaneros as much as those well-known fortresses of the period that still stand.

L

a infraestructura del transporte es prácticamente inexistente en Cuba. Los dos objetivos primordiales sobre este asunto deberán ser: proporcionar una red nacional de transporte de autopistas/ferrocarriles, y proporcionar un sistema de carreteras/tránsito efectivo y balanceado en todas las áreas urbanas de importancia. Durante los primeros cinco años, en la Cuba de la pos-tiranía, las siguientes conclusiones aplican: 1. Se encuentran varias deficiencias graves en la red interregional de carreteras. Se deberá hacer especial esfuerzo en completar la autopista “8 Vías” desde Ciego de Ávila hacia el este de la isla, a un costo estimado de $750 millones. Un agresivo programa de mantenimiento de la red a un costo estimado de $175 millones al año, mientras se fomenta el establecimiento de un sistema de tránsito interregional.

2. La infraestructura necesaria para proporcionar la movilidad urbana esencial ha estado paralizada durante los últimos 25 años. Se deberá hacer un esfuerzo especial para proveer un sistema de transporte público adecuado a un costo de capital estimado en $600 millones y a un costo de operaciones estimado en $350 millones anuales. Mientras que a la vez se deberán proporcionar muchas mejoras en la operación de tráfico, lo antes posible, para manejar el aumento proyectado de vehículos en las áreas urbanas.

T

he transportation infrastructure in Cuba is practically nonexistent. The two primary objectives in this area should be: to provide a national transportation network of highways/railroads; to provide an effective and balanced roadway/transit system in all major urban areas. For the first five years, in a post-tyranny Cuba, the following conclusions apply: 1.

Several major deficiencies are found in the interregional highways network. Concentrated effort should be on the completion of the “8 lane” highway from Ciego de Avila to the east of the island, at an estimated cost of $ 750 millions. An aggressive maintenance program of the network at an estimated cost of $175 millions/year, while fostering the establishment of an interregional transit system.

2.

The infrastructure necessary to provide an adequate urban mobility has been stagnant for the last 25 years. Concentrated effort should be on providing an adequate mass transit system at a total estimated capital cost of $600 millions and an estimated operational cost of $350 millions/year. While providing as many traffic operational improvements as soon as possible, to handle the expected increase of vehicles in the urban areas.

Railroad network is in a very poor operational state, both bulk cargo and passenger service. Concentration should be on fasttracking an upgrade of the railroad network, at a total estimated capital cost of $1,950 millions, and an annual operating cost of $195 millions/year.

4.

Upgrade feeder highways to the major economic centers of the island, at a cost estimated at $1,500 millions.

Señor Presidente, Señores Cardenales y queridos Hermanos en el Episcopado, Excelentísimas Autoridades, Señoras y Señores, Amigos todos, Doy gracias a Dios, que me ha permitido visitar esta hermosa Isla, que tan profunda huella dejó en el corazón de mi amado Predecesor, el Beato Juan Pablo II, cuando estuvo en estas tierras como mensajero de la verdad y la esperanza. También yo he deseado ardientemente venir entre ustedes como peregrino de la caridad, para agradecer a la Virgen María la presencia de su venerada imagen en el Santuario del Cobre, desde donde acompaña el camino de la Iglesia en esta Nación e infunde ánimo a todos los cubanos para que, de la mano de Cristo, descubran el genuino sentido de los afanes y anhelos que anidan en el corazón humano y alcancen la fuerza necesaria para construir una sociedad solidaria, en la que nadie se sienta excluido. «Cristo, resucitado de entre los muertos, brilla en el mundo, y lo hace de la forma más clara, precisamente allí donde según el juicio humano todo parece sombrío y sin esperanza. convencido de que, donde él llega, el desaliento deja paso a la esperanza, la bondad despeja incertidumbres y una fuerza vigorosa abre el horizonte a inusitadas y beneficiosas perspectivas. En su nombre, y como Sucesor del apóstol Pedro, he querido recordar su mensaje de salvación, que fortalezca el entusiasmo y solicitud de los Obispos cubanos, así como de sus presbíteros, de los religiosos y de quienes se preparan con ilusión al ministerio sacerdotal y la vida consagrada. Concluyo aquí mi peregrinación, pero continuaré rezando fervientemente para que ustedes sigan adelante y Cuba sea la casa de todos y para todos los cubanos, donde convivan la justicia y la libertad, en un clima de serena fraternidad. El respeto y cultivo de la libertad que late en el corazón de todo hombre es imprescindible para responder adecuadamente a las exigencias fundamentales de su dignidad, y construir así una sociedad en la que cada uno se sienta protagonista indispensable del futuro de su vida, su familia y su patria.

I came here as a witness to Jesus Christ, convinced that, wherever he is present, discouragement yields to hope, goodness dispels uncertainties and a powerful force opens up the horizon to beneficial and unexpected possibilities. In Christ’s name, and as the Successor of the Apostle Peter, I wished to proclaim his message of salvation and to strengthen the zeal and pastoral concern of the Cuban Bishops, the priests, the religious and all those preparing with enthusiasm for priestly ministry and the consecrated life. May this Journey also serve as a new impulse to all those who cooperate with perseverance and self-sacrifice in the work of evangelization, particularly the lay faithful. By intensifying their commitment to God at home and in the workplace, may they never tire of offering their responsible contribution for the good and the integral progress of their homeland.

The path which Christ points out to humanity, and to each particular individual and people, is not a source of constraint, but rather the primary and principal premise for their authentic development. The light of the Lord, has shone brightly during these days; may that light never fade in those who have welcomed it; may it help all people to foster social harmony and to allow the blossoming of all that is finest in the Cuban soul, its most noble values, which can be the basis for building a society of broad vision, renewed and reconciled. May no one feel excluded from taking up this exciting task because of limitations of his or her basic freedoms, or excused by indolence or lack of material resources, a situation which is worsened when restrictive economic measures, imposed from outside the country, unfairly burden its people.

I now conclude my pilgrimage, but I will continue praying fervently that you will go forward and that Cuba will be the home of all and for all Cubans, where justice and freedom coexist in a climate of serene fraternity. Respect and promotion of freedom which is present in the heart of each person are essential in order to respond adequately to the

na de las más hermosas especies endémicas cubanas –oriunda de Baracoa– es la polimita (polimita picta), caracol terrestre de las más vistosas tonalidades, aunque usualmente asociado con el color amarillo.i

La emperatriz María Teresa de Austria (1717-1780) poseía una importante colección de conchas y caracoles de todas partes del mundo y le pidió al científico austríaco Ignaz Edler von Born (1742-1791) que las analizara y describiera, lo cual hizo en un hermoso libro publicado en 1780.ii Entre las joyas de la colección imperial se encontraban varias polimitas cubanas (aunque, según algunos autores, entonces se desconocía su procedencia), y de ese modo hizo nuestra polimita su debut en el mundo de las ciencias naturales. Mucho antes, sin embargo, la polimita ya era conocida en otro contexto por los europeos, aunque también ignoraran que era una de las bellezas de nuestra isla.iii

Desde que el ser humano comenzó a pintar, la fauna y flora circundantes han cautivado su interés. Las cuevas de Altamira, en Cantabria, y los frescos romanos son testigos de esta preocupación pictórica a través de los siglos. Y esta tradición tuvo un desarrollo particular en la Holanda del siglo XVII, cuando se comenzaron a pintar las llamadas “naturalezas muertas”.

Uno de los objetivos de este tipo de composición plástica era llamar la atención a lo efímero de la vida y de sus placeres sensuales. Por ello, las imágenes típicamente incluyen flores y frutas cortadas y/o elementos que se pudieran encontrar en una mesa después de una cena (comida, platos, cubiertos, vasijas), así como algunos animales y conchas.

Por otra parte, en el siglo XVII Holanda era conocida y respetada por su amplio comercio con las partes más alejadas del mundo. La inclusión de elementos exóticos en las naturalezas muertas (jarrones de porcelana china, conchas insólitas) era otra forma de dar testimonio de esta presencia holandesa en todos los mares del orbe.

Si de conchas insólitas se trataba, obviamente la polimita iba a ocupar un lugar destacado. Sus vívidos colores (especialmente el amarillo) deben haber causado sensación en Holanda.iv Y no tardó en aparecer en varias de las más importantes naturalezas muertas de la época, incluyendo algunas hechas por los más reputados artífices de ese género.

En mi peregrinar por esta temática he logrado ubicar 9, o quizás 12, óleos de cuatro importantes artistas, que incorporan nuestra polimita en sus obras. La primera pieza, de Ambrosius Bosschaert (1573-1621), data de 68

O

ne of the most beautiful species endemic to Cuba – a native of Baracoa – is the polimita (polimita picta), a land snail featuring the most flashing hues, although usually associated with the color yellow.i Empress Maria Theresa of Austria (1717-1780) owned an important collection of shells and snails from all over the world and asked Austrian scientist, Ignaz Edler von Born (1742-1791), to analyze and describe it, which he did in a beautiful book published in 1780.ii Among the jewels in the imperial collection were several Cuban polimitas (although, according to some authors, their origin was unknown at the time), and thus our polimita made its debut in the world of natural science. Much earlier, however, the polimita was already known to Europeans in a different context, although they also ignored the fact that it is one of our island’s beauties.iii

Since humans began to paint, their surrounding flora and fauna have captured their interest. The caves of Altamira in Cantabria and Roman frescoes witness this pictorial concern throughout the centuries. This specific tradition developed in Holland during the XVII Century, when so called “still life” paintings gained popularity.

One of the objectives of this kind of painting is to call attention to the brevity of life and its sensual pleasures. Therefore, these pictures typically include cut flowers and fruits and/or elements that could be found on a table after a meal (food, plates, cutlery, serving pieces), as well as animals and shells.

On the other hand, during the XVII Century, Holland was known and respected for its far-flung trade with the most remote corners of the world. The inclusion of exotic elements in still life paintings (jars of Chinese porcelain, unusual shells) was another way of bearing witness to Dutch presence throughout the world’s seas.

When it came to unusual shells, the polimita would obviously stand out. Its vivid colors (particularly yellow) must have caused a sensation in Holland. iv And soon they began to show up in the most important still life paintings of the time, including some painted by the most reputable masters of the genre.

My research on this topic has yielded 9, or perhaps 12, oils by important artists who incorporate our polimita in their works. The first piece, by Ambrosius Bosschaert (1573-1621), dating from 1606; v 72

and the last (if the reddish snail is, indeed, a polimita), is from 1698 and its author is Adriaen Coorte (ca. 1660-1707).

Do not forget that around that time, Holland was subject to the craze (“tulipmania”) of trying to find (and paint) the rarest and most dazzling tulips.

When I wrote my previously mentioned book, I was not familiar with that painting and mentioned an oil painting by Baltasar Van der Ast from 1622 as the first artistic representation of a polimita (illust. on p. 84). The error was corrected in that work. I thank my friend Silvia Termes for having brought said oil’s existence to my attention.

In addition to these 12 oils, I have seen a watercolor from 1689, Still-life Study, by Herman Henstenburgh (1667-1726) that incorporates a very similar snail (including the mollusk). Jorge Salazar Carrillo.

Es profesor y Director del Departamento de Economía de la Universidad Internacional de la Florida (Florida International University-FIU), y Miembro Senior NoResidente de la Brookings Institution.

Es Asesor de “Herencia” en el área de su especialidad y ha contribuido con varios bien documentados artículos a esta publicación 76

Fue mi profesor, co-autor y, más que amigo, hermano. Apasionado por la economía desde joven, después de su graduación de bachillerato en el Colegio de Belén estudió la materia en Estados Unidos. Esto con suficientes méritos para ser uno de los profesores fundadores de la Universidad Católica de Santo Tomás de Villanueva, en la Licenciatura en Economía. Al mismo tiempo estudió en la propia Universidad en el único programa de Doctorado en Economía que existió en la Isla antes de 1959, siendo el único estudiante que consiguiera obtener el título.

Además de sus clases y sus estudios en Villanueva, el Dr. Jorge realizó importantes trabajos como economista profesional en la Asociación de Industriales de Cuba y en la Junta de Planificación Económica. Más tarde ocuparía el cargo de Director en el Cuerpo de Economista del Ministerio de Hacienda. Esta responsabilidad le hizo percatarse bien temprano del descalabro económico que eventualmente ocurriría en Cuba con el totalitarismo de los Castro, por lo que emigra a Massachusetts como docente en el Merrimack College.

Hacia principios de la década de 1970 pasa a ser Preboste de Biscayne College, hoy St. Thomas University.

A continuación acepta la posición de Asistente del Preboste en la Universidad de Miami, y hacia finales de la década de 1970 entra a formar parte de la facultad de Florida International University, ocupando conjuntamente el cargo de Preboste Asociado. Durante esta década sus actividades extracurriculares fueron muchas, pero la más connotada fue la Presidencia de la Comisión Hispana del Estado de la Florida.

Antonio fue un prolífico escritor, con más de 25 libros bajo su nombre, y muchos artículos, especialmente para el Instituto de Estudios Cubanos y Cubanoamericanos de la Universidad de Miami, donde fuera Investigador Asociado.

Antonio Jorge Jorge Salazar Carrillo

He was my professor, co-author and, more than friend, brother. Passionate about economics from an early age, after his high school graduation from Colegio de Belén, he studied Economics in the United States. His success garnished for him the honor of being a founding professor at Santo Tomás de Villanueva Catholic University, in the School of Economics.

Concurrently, he studied at the University in the only program in the island before 1959 where one could obtain a Doctorate in Economics, he being the sole student to obtain said degree.

In addition to this classes and studies at Villanueva, Dr. Jorge was responsible for important works as a professional economist at the Industrialists Association (Asociación de Industriales) of Cuba and the Junta of Economic Planning (Junta de Planificación Económica). Later he held the position of Director of Economists in the Ministry of Public Treasury (Hacienda). This position made him realize from early on the economic debacle that would occur in Cuba under Castro's totalitarianism, which is the reason why he emigrated to Massachusetts as a teacher at Merrimack College.

Early on in the 70's, he became Provost of St. Thomas University in Miami. Soon after he accepted the position of Assistant Provost at the University of Miami, and during the late 70's became a member of the faculty at Florida International University, where he also held the position of Assistant Provost. His extracurricular activities were many during that decade but the most important one was as President of the Hispanic Committee of the State of Florida.

Antonio was a prolific writer, author of more than 25 books, and many articles, particularly for the Institute of Cuban and Cuban-American Studies at the University of Miami, where he was Research Associate.

Jorge Salazar Carrillo. is a Professor and Director of the Department of Economics at Florida International University FIU and Non-Resident Senior Member of the Brookings Institution. He is an Adviser to "Herencia" in his field of expertise and has written several welldocumented articles for this publication.

Jack Guiteras Jorge Salazar Carrillo

Cuántos no olvidarán jamás la agencia de pasajes Lorraine Travel en La Habana, bien localizada frente a la Embajada Americana. Este nombre está indisolublemente ligado a Jack Guiteras, y eventualmente se estableció en Alhambra Circle en Coral Gables. La prestigiosa familia Guiteras provenía de Matanzas, la Atenas de Cuba, y las contribuciones de Jack a la intelectualidad cubana en el exilio a través de Belén Jesuit Preparatory, rememoramos lo de sus antecesores, en particular la del famoso Antonio Guiteras.

Su esposa Luisa Gutierrez, que continúa al mando de Lorraine, y Jack, compraron la agencia de viajes A F Msr. D’Or, que por haber nacido en esa parte de Francia, así la había llamado. El matrimonio luchó contra viento y marea para lograr éxitos continuos de la compañía, siendo agentes de instituciones como la Universidad de la Florida y Florida International University. Y organizando viajes alrededor del mundo en el Concorde, con cicerones tan famosos como William Buckley.

Jack era un patriota sin igual. Probablemente pocos sepan de sus luchas para convencer, y evitar por todos los medios, que las agencias turísticas promovieran viajes y excursiones a la Cuba Jorge Salazar Carrillo.

comunista. Sus esfuerzos a través de la Inter American Travel Association (IATA), y con los vendedores a través de la internet (como Orbitz), siempre fueron exitosos, haciendo infructuoso cualquier levantamiento de las restricciones al turismo americano hacia Cuba.

Finalmente, su pasión por la ciencia y la cultura, y su espíritu caritativo, se fraguaron en el establecimiento de la Biblioteca Ramón Guiteras, en honor del patriarca familiar, en la escuela de Belén en Miami. Más adelante también el Centro de Computación del colegio se fraguó con sus contribuciones, al igual que la residencia de los padres jesuitas anexa al plantel.

Jack Guiteras Jorge Salazar Carrillo

Many will never forget Lorraine Travel, the centrally located travel agency across from the American Embassy in Havana. Its name forever linked to that of Jack Guiteras, who later established its counterpart in Alhambra Circle in Coral Gables. The prestigious Guiteras family hailed from Matanzas, the Athens of Cuba, and Jack's contributions to Cuban intelligentsia, through Belén Jesuit Preparatory, remind us of his ancestors, in particular the famous Antonio Guiteras.

His wife, Luisa Gutiérrez, who now manages Lorraine, and Jack, bought the travel agency from Mrs. D'Or, who had so named it after the area in France where she was born. The couple struggled through hell and high water to achieve continued success for the company, being agents for institutions such as the University of Florida and Florida International University. And organizing trips around the world on the Concorde, with such famous guides as William Buckley and Frank Borman.

Jack had no peer as a patriot. Few probably know of his struggles to convince, and avoid at all costs, other tourist agencies from promoting trips and excursions to Communist Cuba. His efforts through the Inter American Travel Association (IATA), and through internet sellers (like Orbitz), were always successful, thwarting a lifting of restrictions of American travel in Cuba.

Finally, his passion for science and culture, and his charitable spirit, made possible the founding of the Ramón Guiteras Library, in honor of the family patriarch, at Belén Jesuit Prep in Miami. Later on, the Computer Center at the school was also established, as was the residence of the Jesuit priests next to the school.

Jorge Salazar Carrillo. is a Professor and Director of the Department of Economics at Florida International University FIU and Non-Resident Senior Member of the Brookings Institution. ste acontecimiento, conocido como “La toma de La Habana por los ingleses”, no sólo dividió nuestro país en un antes y un después, sino que marcó el rumbo futuro de la Isla de Cuba. Fue uno de los hechos más importantes de la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII en Cuba, la región del Caribe y el Hemisferio Occidental, dando inicio a una ocupación británica en la isla que puso en peligro el equilibrio del imperio colonial español y, por otro lado, ejerció gran influencia en el advenimiento de los acontecimientos históricos posteriores.

Durante los once meses que duró la ocupación británica, se incrementó la entrada de esclavos provenientes de las colonias inglesas, lo cual favoreció la actividad agrícola, y se desarrolló también un libre y activo comercio. El comercio de seres humanos, una necesidad fundamental de la oligarquía habanera, comenzó a realizarse directamente y se abarató con los negreros ingleses, hecho que constituyó una gran injusticia. Con la ocupación inglesa se inicia la masonería en Cuba y durante la misma los británicos ofrecieron los primeros servicios religiosos protestantes en La Habana.

El 6 de julio de 1763 los ingleses devolvieron La Habana a cambio de la Florida, pero nada volvió a ser como antes. Una vez restablecido el dominio español, los intentos de restituir los viejos controles monopólicos fueron insuficientes para contener el flujo comercial entre Cuba, las islas del Caribe y las colonias de Norteamérica. Aunque la oligarquía criolla quedó en lo político sujeta nuevamente al poder colonial español, ahora contaba con una capacidad de influencia, de comercio y de transporte superior a la que poseía anteriormente.

La toma de La Habana por los ingleses en 1762 demostró la relevancia de la libertad del tráfico marítimo y la necesidad de una marina mercante que lo asegurase, e influyó en la forma de vida y en las concepciones políticas y jurídicas de la intelectualidad criolla. Años más tarde, la independencia de las 13 colonias en Norteamérica supondría un ejemplo para los cubanos, los cuales apoyaron y ayudaron a financiar las tropas contra Inglaterra.

T

his event, known as “the British occupation of Havana,” (usually referred to as the Battle of Havana by Americans and Britons), not only divided our island into a ‘before’ and an ‘after’, but also changed the future direction of the island of Cuba. It was one of the most important events of the second half of the XVIII Century in Cuba, the Caribbean and the Western Hemisphere, giving rise to British occupation of the island, endangering the equilibrium of the Spanish colonial empire and, by “La primera noche” óleo /tela autor: the same token, a great influence Reinaldo L. During the eleven months of British occupation, there was an increase in slave trade with other British colonies, which favored agricultural activities and also developed a free and active trade. Trading in human beings, a basic necessity for Havana’s oligarchy,became less expensive and more direct with British slave traders, albeit a great injustice. Masonry was established in Cuba during the British occupation, and at the time, the first ever Protestant religious services took place in Havana.

On July 6, 1763 the British returned Havana in exchange for Florida, but nothing was ever the same again. Once the Spaniards were back in power, the old monopolistic controls were not enough to contain the flow of commercial business between Cuba, the Caribbean islands and the colonies of North America. Although the Creole oligarchy was again subject to Spanish colonial power, it now had a greater capacity to influence trade and transport than it had before.

The occupation of Havana by the British in 1762 highlighted the importance of free maritime trade and the need for a merchant marine to safeguard it, influencing the way of life and political and legal ideas of Creole intellectuals. Years later, the independence of the 13 American colonies was an example to follow for Cubans, who gave their support and helped finance the troops against England.

CUBA NOSTALGIA 2012

Mayo 18, 19 y 20. Se efectuó la feria anual de Cuba Nostalgia, dedicada este año a la Caridad del Cobre, Patrona de Cuba. Herencia mostró en su stand una colección de fotos de aves cubanas y estuvieron a la venta libros, revistas y postales alegóricas. También se exhibió un mapa de Cuba con la distribución de los municipios existentes en 1873: “Topografía Pintoresca de la Isla de Cuba” cortesía de Michael Garffer. Como en el pasado año, contamos con la presencia de la pianista y compositora Daysi Celia Admiral, quien ofreció varios conciertos. Los muebles de madera que decoraron el stand fue una cortesía de Nery Ramos, de Art Teak Furniture.

PREMIO HERENCIA 2012 Mayo 21. Presentación del primero de los Cuadernos Nueva Cuba, del Dr. Humberto López Morales, sobre la cultura y la educación en la Cuba del futuro. Se proponen como borradores que sirvan de documentos de trabajo y que constituyan un punto de partida para todos aquellos que se propongan y emprendan la reconstrucción del país.

La presentación estuvo a cargo de Marcos Antonio Ramos y Carlos Alberto Montaner.

Herencia Cultural Cubana le hizo entrega del PREMIO HERENCIA 2012 a tan distinguido cubano, por todos los éxitos alcanzados en su fructífera vida. El premio fue entregado por el Presidente, Luis Mejer Sarrá y usó de la palabra Alberto S. Bustamante, Chairman.

La obra científica del Dr. Humberto López Morales abarca más de doscientos cincuenta títulos, con más de cincuenta libros. Actualmente, es Secretario General de la Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española desde 1994 y Doctor honoris causa por la Universidad de Heidelberg y otras 18 universidades. Ha recibido la Encomienda con placa de la Orden de Alfonso X el Sabio, entre otras distinciones.

Agosto 16. Herencia Cultural Cubana entregó el PREMIO HERENCIA 2011 a Gustavo F. Araoz, Presidente de ICOMOS, Organización Internacional no gubernamental vinculada a la UNESCO, dedicada a promover y proteger la conservación de monumentos y sitios en el mundo.

El premio se otorgó el pasado año, pero por las múltiples actividades del Sr. Araoz, aún no se le había entregado. La ceremonia tuvo lugar en un almuerzo con el ejecutivo de Herencia. El premio fue entregado por Luís Mejer Sarrá, en calidad de Presidente de la organización y usó de la palabra Marcos Antonio Ramos, Vice Presidente de Herencia Cultural Cubana.

FELICITACIONES Junio 29. El Centro Cultural Cubano de New York, en colaboración con Americas Society, ofreció un concierto en honor del compositor cubano Aurelio de la Vega, considerado uno de los más grandes exponentes de la música clásica contemporánea.

Aurelio de la Vega recibió la Medalla Ignacio Cervantes 2012.

Es Miembro Emeritus de Herencia Cultural Cubana y recibió el PREMIO HERENCIA en 2004.

ZOE VALDES. La escritora cubana Zoe Valdés recibió hoy la Gran Medalla de "Vermeil" de París, la más alta distinción que otorga la capital francesa de manos del alcalde, Bertrand Delanoë, quien alabó su papel en la defensa de los Derechos Humanos "en todo el mundo".

Delanoë destacó "la armonía existente entre el compromiso de Valdés con la justicia como mujer de cultura y los valores de París", ciudad para la que "ningún combate por los Derechos Humanos es ajeno".

Zoe Valdés reside en Francia desde 1995.

Julio 28. Miami Dade County Auditórium presentó la zarzuela cubana Amalia Batista, del maestro Rodrigo Prats, en conmemoración de los Cuarenta y Cinco Años de la fundación de La Sociedad Pro Arte Grateli.

En dicho evento, la Excma. Sra. Doña Cristina Barrios Almazor, Cónsul General de España en los Estados Unidos, hizo entrega a Grateli en la persona de su fundadora y Directora, Pili de la Rosa, de la Orden “Isabel La Católica”, concedida por S. M. el Rey de España, Juan Carlos I, como la principal compañía de zarzuelas en los Estados Unidos.
