Henry Mayo Opens a New, Leading‑Edge Primary Care Practice

WELCOME
At the bottom of this page you’ll find Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital’s Purpose Statement: Be the trusted regional leader to inspire and deliver optimal health and wellness.
As you’ll read in this issue of It’s Your Health, in mid-August we opened our first primary care practice. Access to top-notch primary care is a key component of quality healthcare. Primary care practitioners help their patients stay healthy by offering and monitoring important preventive screenings that, in many cases, detect medical issues early. In addition, primary care is normally the gateway to more advanced care when needed.
A highly skilled primary care practitioner has razor-sharp diagnostic skills, good rapport with their patients, and deep medical knowledge. We are very excited that we opened our practice with a physician who has all these skills, and more. You can get to know Dr. Anirudhi Rai on page 3. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a good reminder to schedule your annual mammogram at our Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center. We are pleased to offer medical services that can help you achieve optimal health and wellness! Yours in good health,
Henry Mayo Nationally Recognized for Its Commitment to Providing High-Quality Stroke Care
THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION PRESENTS GET WITH THE GUIDELINES – STROKE GOLD PLUS AWARD FOR ENSURING ALL STROKE PATIENTS HAVE ACCESS TO BEST PRACTICES AND LIFE-SAVING CARE.
For the tenth year in a row, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Gold Plus Achievement Award for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability.
Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving odds of survival, minimizing disability, and accelerating recovery times.
Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest research- and evidence-based guidelines. Get With The Guidelines - Stroke is an in-hospital program for improving stroke care by promoting consistent adherence to these guidelines, which can minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.

Meet Your New Primary Care Physician, ANIRUDH RAI

Dr.
Rai began his medical journey while working toward his bachelor’s degree at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). He gained research experience in biochemistry at Valley Renal Medical Group during his last two years at CSUN before moving on to St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. When it came time to choose a specialty, Dr. Rai chose family medicine.
“Family medicine has been a great field for me, personally,” Dr. Rai says. “The wide variety of services that I can provide is always a delight, and the enormous amount of knowledge that is needed to stay updated, which may seem intimidating, I find humbling and exciting.”
Dr. Rai received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 2019 and returned to California for a family medicine residency at St. Joseph Providence Hospital in Eureka. Throughout his education, Dr. Rai continued to gain research experience focusing on biochemistry, specifically the late phases of new drug studies, which he found to be both interesting and encouraging.
“It not only updated me on what may be coming in the future but also what knowledge is being gained,” he says.
Dr. Rai was born in Delhi, India, and moved to Southern California with his family at the age of 4. He grew up in the San Fernando Valley area before moving to Tarzana. He has joined Henry Mayo to further his practice and bring his knowledge to the Santa Clarita community.
“Patients will get the care they need at opportune times,” Dr. Rai says. “I’m hoping to be a reliable source of knowledge for my patients who wish to know more about their care.”
In his spare time, Dr. Rai enjoys reading, hiking, playing various instruments, and boxing. His favorite instrument is the viola, which he describes as a miniature cello.

“It’s an uncommon instrument, not as piercing as the cello or as melodic as the violin,” he says. “The soft sound really resonated with me when I first heard it. It was the perfect bridge between cello and violin.”
Dr. Rai began boxing eight years ago after a friend asked him to be his sparring partner. From there, he was trained as a novice and continues to enjoy the sport.
As Dr. Rai provides care to his patients at Henry Mayo’s new primary care practice (see story on page 4), he wants to be a reminder that a guiding light exists even when times are difficult. He particularly likes this quote by M.L. Haskins, “Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
I’m hoping to be a reliable source of knowledge for my patients who wish to know more about their care.”

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Opens a New PRIMARY CARE PRACTICE
SANTA CLARITA VALLEY RESIDENTS NOW HAVE CONVENIENT ACCESS TO PRIMARY CARE ON THE HOSPITAL CAMPUS.

tAHenry Mayo, we want to improve the health of our community by providing easy access to a broad range of high-quality medical services.
In early August, we opened a new primary care practice, giving Santa Clarita Valley residents convenient access to primary care services on the hospital campus and through telehealth appointments.
A temporary location is now open in suite 220 of the Henry Mayo Outpatient Surgery Building, with a permanent location scheduled to open in February 2023.
A BETTER HEALTHCARE EXPERIENCE
The new Henry Mayo Newhall Primary Care practice offers patients a starting point for a simple, streamlined journey of care. Patients who need diagnostic testing, laboratory work, or surgical services will not need to leave the Henry Mayo campus.

“We believe our new primary care practice is a great asset to the community,” says Sian Durham, senior director of ambulatory services at Henry Mayo. “We want to make annual physicals, a wide range of preventive health screenings, and ongoing medical management of chronic conditions easy and accessible to patients. Opening the primary care practice is just one more way we are working to meet the healthcare needs of Santa Clarita Valley residents.”
MORE PERKS
Henry Mayo Newhall Primary Care’s permanent location will be outfitted with leading-edge equipment, including mounted television monitors for patients to view their test results and medical images, such as X-rays.
Patients will also be able to see their medical records on the screen and interact with their physician to develop their plan of care. Each patient room will be equipped with comfortable chairs that can be quickly transformed into exam tables.
A new, easy-to-use online portal is also available to allow patients to request, reschedule, or cancel appointments. The portal also gives patients the ability to access their medical records and lab results. Additionally, medication lists are kept on the portal, so physicians and patients always have an up to date record of current medications.
An extensive health library is also available through the portal, where patients can access a wide range of information on general health topics and specific health conditions, including those they may be experiencing.
MORE SERVICES
The primary care practice is just one of the many services offered on campus. Earlier this year, Henry Mayo announced a collaboration with Keck Medicine of USC to bring advanced healthcare services, including world-class cancer care services, colorectal surgical specialties, specialty orthopedic services, and urology services, to the Santa Clarita Valley.

Primary Care, Urgent Care, or Emergency Department—Where Should You Go?
IT CAN BE CHALLENGING TO DECIDE WHERE TO GO FOR AN UNEXPECTED ILLNESS OR INJURY. KNOWING WHICH CARE OPTION TO CHOOSE HELPS YOU GET THE TREATMENT THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU. PLUS, IT MAY SAVE YOU MONEY AND TIME.
PRIMARY CARE
Your primary care doctor is the best person to see for most nonemergency care needs because they already know your medical history and preferences, you can schedule an exact appointment time, and insurance typically covers most of the cost.
See your primary care doctor for:
• Annual checkups
• Back pain
• Blood and laboratory tests
URGENT CARE
• Care for chronic conditions, such as arthritis, blood pressure problems, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes, heart disease, or mental health conditions
• Health and wellness education
• Mild illness
• Mild to moderate headaches
• Vaccinations
If you are unable to get an appointment with your primary care doctor, then urgent care is often the best place to go when you have a minor illness or injury, and when no specialized equipment is needed, such as imaging technology.
Go to urgent care for:
• Allergic reactions
• Bronchitis
• Colds or flu
• Cough or sore throat
• Dizziness
• Dehydration
• Ear infections
• Low fever
• Insect bites
• Migraines
• Mild asthma attacks
• Minor burns or cuts
• Minor head injury
Nausea
Pink eye
Rash
• Simple bone fracture
• Sprains and strains
• Stitches
• Urinary tract infections
If you go to urgent care for a condition that is better handled in the emergency department (ED), you will likely get transferred to the ED, which means waiting longer for treatment and having to pay for two visits.
EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
ED visits should be reserved for medical emergencies that need immediate attention and specialized equipment to treat you.
Go to the ED if you have:
• A major head injury
• A broken bone that breaks through the skin or looks disfigured
• Heart attack symptoms, including chest pain or shortness of breath
• Heart palpitations
• Fainting or loss of consciousness
• Fever in infants and over 105 degrees in anyone over age 2
• Ingested poison
• Pneumonia
• Seizures
• Severe abdominal pain
• Severe burn, injury, or wound
• Severe headache
• Shock
• Signs of a stroke,
including sudden confusion, changes in vision, difficulty talking or walking, or numbness or weakness on one side
• Snake bite, and bites from poisonous spiders and insects
• Sudden confusion
• Swallowed an object that may block the airway or digestive tract
• Uncontrollable bleeding
For emergency care, call 911. However, if you go to the ED with a condition that could have been treated at urgent care, expect a longer wait time and higher fees for the same treatment.
