WELCOME In mid-February, we announced that Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital had entered into a collaboration with Keck Medicine of USC to provide cancer care services to the Santa Clarita Valley.

As an independent community hospital, we have a long history of collaborating with other healthcare organizations to expand access to top-notch medical care in our community. By offering our patients access to Keck Medicine of USC’s world-class doctors and cutting-edge research, we are offering you additional options for exceptional health care without having to leave the Santa Clarita Valley.

In this issue, you’ll meet some of the Keck Medicine of USC physicians who are now members of the Henry Mayo medical staff, and you’ll find an indepth profile of radiation oncologist May Tao, MD, in which she outlines her vision for the cancer care services we’ll be offering here on our campus.

Team of Experts KECK MEDICINE OF USC PHYSICIANS— LEADERS IN THEIR FIELDS— JOIN HENRY MAYO NEWHALL HOSPITAL RADIATION ONCOLOGY May Lin Tao, MD, MSHS, clinical associate professor of radiation oncology, department of radiation oncology, Keck School of Medicine of USC Dr. Tao serves as co-medical director of the Keck Medicine of USC/Henry Mayo Cancer Program in Santa Clarita and is lead physician for the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center Radiation Oncology Clinic. She specializes in the treatment of a diverse range of cancers with radiation therapy and is committed to communitybased service, delivering compassionate, advanced technologic care. Dr. Tao is a sought-after moderator, speaker, and workshop leader at community and professional events on various cancer topics. Her areas of specialization include volumetric arc therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery and body radiation therapy, 4D CT/motion management, and adaptive radiotherapy.

BREAST HEALTH & SURGERY Amanda M. Woodworth, MD, FACS, CPE, associate professor of clinical surgery, division of breast, endocrine & soft tissue surgery, Keck School of Medicine of USC Dr. Woodworth serves as director of breast health for the Keck Medicine of USC and Henry Mayo Cancer Program. As a fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist, she provides comprehensive care with a focus on oncoplastics. Dr. Woodworth has established a high-risk clinic, been a principle investigator for collaborative trials, and has written grants and taught surgical, OB-GYN, and family practice residents. She specializes in breast cancer, breast masses, high-risk lesions, high-risk patients, genetics, and breast and ovarian cancer syndromes.

Dr. Woodworth believes in treating patients within their community, and has given numerous lectures and community awareness events.

COLORECTAL SURGERY & CANCER CARE Kyle G. Cologne, MD, associate professor of clinical surgery, department of surgery, Keck School of Medicine of USC Dr. Cologne, board-certified in general and colorectal surgery, specializes in laparoscopic and minimally invasive procedures for a variety of diseases, including colon and rectal cancer, complex endoscopic polyp removal, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and the treatment and management of anorectal disorders such as hemorrhoids.

Marjun Philip Duldulao, MD, assistant professor of clinical surgery, department of surgery, Keck School of Medicine of USC Dr. Duldulao, fellowship-trained in colorectal surgery, specializes in minimally invasive and robotic procedures for the management of colon and rectal cancer, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, and the treatment of complex anorectal and pelvic floor disorders. His clinical research interests include improving outcomes in colorectal surgery, minimally invasive colorectal surgery, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Christine Hsieh, MD, assistant professor of clinical surgery, department of surgery, Keck School of Medicine of USC Dr. Hsieh, fellowship-trained in colorectal surgery, specializes in minimally invasive procedures, colorectal cancer, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, women’s health, anorectal disease, and pelvic floor disorders. She has a particular interest in women’s health pertaining to anorectal disease, pelvic floor disorders, and functional concerns.

Joongho Shin, MD, assistant professor of clinical surgery, department of surgery, Keck School of Medicine of USC Dr. Shin, board-certified in general surgery and colorectal surgery, specializes in treating colorectal cancer using minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgical techniques. He also treats peritoneal carcinomatosis, HIPEC, diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids, anal fissures, fistula, and pilonidal cysts.

ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY Frank Petrigliano, MD, chief, USC Epstein Family Center for Sports Medicine, Keck Medicine of USC Dr. Petrigliano, head team physician for the Los Angeles Kings hockey team and USC Athletics, has extensive experience in knee, shoulder, and elbow arthroscopic procedures, and arthroplasty of the shoulder. Additional expertise includes ACL surgery, rotator cuff repair, reverse shoulder replacement, shoulder fractures, tendon ruptures, elbow arthroscopy, and ligament reconstruction.

Joshua Gary, MD, chief of orthopaedic surgery trauma service, department of orthopaedic surgery, Keck Medicine of USC Dr. Gary offers significant expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of acute traumatic injuries, such as fractures and dislocations in the pelvic area and upper and lower extremities.

He also has a special interest in the treatment of fracture nonunions, and delayed unions.

Joseph N. Liu, MD, assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery, department of orthopaedic surgery, Keck School of Medicine of USC Dr. Liu specializes in the treatment of sports medicine injuries. He is a team physician for USC Athletics and a previous assistant team physician for the NBA’s Chicago Bulls and MLB’s Chicago White Sox. Dr. Liu has expertise in arthroscopic surgery and knee ligament injuries, cartilage restoration and repair, shoulder instability, rotator cuff repair, shoulder arthritis, hip impingement and hip labral repair. He also performs total shoulder replacement.

Ram K. Alluri, MD, assistant professor of clinical orthopaedic surgery, department of orthopaedic surgery, Keck School of Medicine of USC Dr. Alluri specializes in the surgical treatment of all neck and back disorders, including degenerative disc disease of cervical and lumbar spine. He also treats patients with adult spinal deformity and patients requiring complex revision surgery.

mid-February, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital announced a new collaboration with Keck Medicine of USC to bring advanced healthcare services to the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding areas.

the Henry Mayo campus. Henry Mayo and Keck Medicine will soon provide a comprehensive program for inpatient and outpatient oncology services encompassing radiation, medical oncology, and surgical oncology subspecialists, as well as supportive services—all in one convenient location.

May Lin Tao, MD, a clinical associate professor of radiation oncology at the USC Keck School of Medicine, is co-medical director of the new Henry Mayo and Keck Medicine joint Cancer Services program.

“As a radiation oncologist practicing in this community and the Los Angeles area for almost two decades, I am excited to lead the launch of our newly opened Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center Radiation Oncology Clinic on the Henry Mayo campus,” Dr. Tao says. “This exciting collaboration leverages the cancer expertise from USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center to deliver state-of-theart, academic-based medicine that is both compassionate and patient-centered.”

Dr. Tao received her undergraduate degree from Yale University and her medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine. She also trained at the Harvard Joint Center for Radiation Therapy, and has previously worked for a number of prestigious Southern California health systems.

PRIORITIZING PATIENT WELL-BEING The radiation oncology clinic was thoughtfully designed to optimize patient comfort. The newly renovated rooms are spacious, warm, and filled with natural light to help patients feel more at ease during their visit. Consultative services, imaging for treatment planning, and care delivery are provided at the clinic, which features cutting-edge, new-to-market technology for high-level precision, and a new standard of efficiency and patient confidence. Patients will also have access to virtual nutrition services at no cost.

What is Radiation Therapy?

RADIATION THERAPY—ALSO CALLED RADIOTHERAPY, IRRADIATION, AND X-RAY THERAPY—IS A VERY COMMON TREATMENT FOR CANCER. NEARLY 60% OF PEOPLE DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER ARE PRESCRIBED RADIATION THERAPY, WHICH CAN BE USED ALONE OR WITH OTHER CANCER TREATMENTS. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS. Radiation therapy is used to:

Radiation therapy destroys cancer cells using:

• Cure or shrink early-stage cancer

• Gamma Rays

• Electrons

• Stop cancer from coming back

• X-rays

• Protons

• Treat cancer that has returned

These therapies damage cells’ DNA by making small breaks in the DNA. This prevents the cancer cells from dividing and multiplying. The cancer cells eventually die, are broken down, and removed by body.

• A lleviate pain, help with swallowing, breathing, and other problems associated with advanced cancer (palliative radiation).

Normal cells that are exposed to radiation have the ability to repair DNA damage and can better recover.

Radiation therapy can be administered three different ways:

1. External beam radiation uses a large machine to direct high energy beams from outside the body to the tumor. Treatments are usually brief and given daily over a few weeks. It can also be administered twice a day or over just a few days. A person receiving external radiation is not radioactive.

2. Internal radiation or brachytherapy involves placement of radioactive sources (in the form of seeds, ribbons or capsules) very near or inside a tumor or an organ. Sometimes the sources are temporarily placed in body and removed. Special precautions are needed but the sources are eventually not radioactive.

3. Systemic radiation are radioactive compounds that are injected or swallowed. They travel throughout the body killing cancer cells. Body fluids, such as urine, sweat, and saliva, will give off radiation for a little while and there may be special precautions at home.

The radiation therapy team usually includes a: • Radiation oncologist who is specially trained to counsel a patient about the appropriate use of radiation and how to treat cancer with radiation therapy.

This person oversees your radiation care.

• Medical radiation physicist who makes sure the radiation equipment is working right and gives the exact dose prescribed by the radiation oncologist.

• Radiation oncology nurse who has special training in cancer treatment and helps coordinate care, give you information about radiation treatment, and manage side effects of treatment.

• Medical Dosimetrist who helps devise the radiation plan and calculates how the radiation dose is distributed in the body.

• Radiation therapist who correctly positions patients for radiation treatment, operates equipment, and executes treatment.

• Other healthcare professionals include dietitians, physical therapist, dentists, genetic counselors, social workers, etc., who may support a patient throughout their treatments.
