WELCOME

Cardiac Rehabilitation Center

As a non-profit medical center, we rely on community support to bring needed programs and services to the Santa Clarita Valley. A wonderful example is our cardiovascular program. In 2005, the late Roberta G. Veloz made a generous donation to our foundation to start a heart care program. Now, the Roberta G. Veloz Cardiovascular Center provides critical services to our valley.

FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS HAD A

Healthcare is a team sport. In this issue you’ll read about how our Emergency Department staff, our Cardiovascular Services Team, and Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics work together to treat heart attack patients quickly. When someone suffers a heart attack, every second counts. You’ll also read about Henry Mayo volunteer and supporter Richard Sears, who underwent a lifechanging procedure—TAVR—that we recently began offering in our Cardiovascular Center. Our rollout of a TAVR program underscores our commitment to bringing much-needed services to our valley and to earning the confidence of those whose generosity helps us carry out our mission.

Improves Quality of Life and Longevity CARDIAC EVENT, HIGH-QUALITY CARDIAC REHABILITATION CAN PLAY A KEY ROLE IN THEIR RECOVERY.

T

he skilled and experienced cardiac rehabilitation team at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital provides a supportive environment where patients learn how to make lifestyle changes, including managing both their weight and the stress in their lives, adopting healthy dietary habits, and developing a daily exercise routine. Henry Mayo’s cardiac rehabilitation team may include a patient’s family doctor, a heart specialist, a surgeon, nurses, and exercise specialists. Each of these caring and professional staff members is specially trained to help our patients recover and achieve their healthcare goals.

Finally, on page seven you can see many of the local donors that offer ongoing support of Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. Their generosity helps make it possible for the members of our courageous and dedicated healthcare team to do the lifesaving work they do every day.

The members of Henry Mayo’s cardiac rehab team also take an active role in teaching and focusing on issues such as chest pain and emergency management, smoking cessation, and managing cardiac medications. Heart patients will also benefit from a personal, oneon-one approach to heart health and healing and a commitment to recovery.

COVID-19 has certainly spotlighted the role of healthcare workers; at Henry Mayo, they are heroes every day, every year.

According to several clinical trials, cardiac rehabilitation patients are 31% less likely to be readmitted to a hospital for heart-related illnesses.

Yours in good health,

If you’ve had a coronary artery intervention or heart surgery or you have another heart condition, ask your doctor about joining a cardiac rehabilitation program. Health insurance and Medicare often cover the cost of cardiac rehabilitation.

Henry Mayo’s Heart Attack Response

Beats the National Standard HENRY MAYO STAFF AND LA COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT PARAMEDICS WORK TOGETHER TO GET HEART ATTACK PATIENTS TREATED QUICKLY.

In

December of 2013, Henry Mayo was designated a STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction) Receiving Center (SRC) by the Los Angeles County EMS agency. Since then, members of the Henry Mayo SRC team have dedicated themselves to providing the Santa Clarita Valley the very best in heart care. The primary treatment for a STEMI is to re-establish blood flow with a procedure called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), in which balloon angioplasty stents, or suction devices, are used to open blockages in the coronary artery. The faster this treatment is delivered, the better the chances are for survival and minimizing long-term damage to the heart muscle.

department staff, the hospital’s Roberta G. Veloz Cardiovascular Center’s cath lab staff, emergency medical services paramedics, and a strong commitment to excellence by all team members. “Many people on our team live in this community and care deeply about taking care of our friends and neighbors,” Avakian says. “We’re fortunate to have people who are passionate about providing the absolute best care.” Henry Mayo physician James Lee, MD, discusses the importance of fast heart attack response times in an It’s Your Health podcast. TIME TIME IS IS MUSCLE MUSCLE

Henry Mayo, working in partnership with Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics, recently achieved an average “door-to-PCI” time of 45 minutes, significantly faster than the national standard of 60 minutes. Door-to-PCI time is the time between when a patient arrives in the emergency department and when a PCI is performed on the patient’s blocked artery to re-establish blood flow. A fast door-to-PCI time is critical because time is muscle. The faster blood flow is restored, the better the outcome. Achieving such rapid door-to-PCI times in the midst of the pandemic underscores Henry Mayo’s focus and commitment to providing top-notch care to the Santa Clarita Valley community. “We have a great team here at Henry Mayo,” says Tamar Avakian, NP, Manager of Cardiovascular Services. “Collaboration and a shared commitment to excellence are critical. Providing great heart care involves continually finding areas to improve and save time.” Avakian has over 16 years of experience working with STEMI teams, and when she arrived at Henry Mayo in 2012, she leveraged that experience to help build Henry Mayo’s STEMI program. She says key factors of a successful STEMI program are strong collaboration between Henry Mayo’s emergency

TAVR

— A Life-Changing Procedure — Gives Patients a New Beginning AFTER MINIMALLY INVASIVE HEART SURGERY, RICHARD “DICK” SEARS LIVES WITH MORE JOY AND EASE.

In

June, Henry Mayo’s Roberta G. Veloz Cardiovascular Center reached a new level when it launched a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) program. TAVR is a cutting-edge minimally invasive procedure in which severely diseased aortic valves can be replaced without open heart surgery. Over the last several years, TAVR has revolutionized how valvular heart disease is treated. Aortic stenosis is the most common type of valvular heart disease in the elderly, and when it becomes severe, it carries a prognosis (if untreated) worse than many metastatic cancers. Aortic stenosis is caused by the accumulation of calcium on the valve,

causing it to harden and restricting its movement. Once a patient with severe aortic stenosis develops symptoms (usually shortness of breath), they will have decreased survival unless the aortic stenosis is treated, making timely medical intervention critical. Historically, this was done surgically by opening the chest (Surgical Valve Replacement, or SAVR), but with advancements in technology and medical practice, this can now be done with minimally invasive TAVR. Recent studies confirm that TAVR offers improved outcomes and quicker recovery compared to SAVR. Richard “Dick” Sears, a life-long Santa Clarita resident, was diagnosed with cardiovascular disease in 2019. A later echocardiogram found that his heart condition was deteriorating. Dick and his wife Maria discussed treatment options with Abhishek Sinha, MD, medical director of the Structural Heart Program at Henry Mayo. Dr. Sinha, who has completed over 180

successful TAVR procedures since 2017 and is one of the highestvolume operators in Los Angeles County, suggested Dick would be a good candidate for a TAVR. Not long after his procedure on July 15, Dick said, “I feel like I can finally walk without having to stop and catch my breath. The procedure itself felt like it was over before it began. I’m so grateful for the care I received and grateful for this very successful procedure. I want to thank those individuals who had the vision and determination to provide this amazing procedure right here in Santa Clarita Valley.” “TAVR is a milestone addition to the cardiovascular treatments we offer here,” says Rosella Dolan, RN, Cardiovascular Services nurse navigator and TAVR Coordinator at Henry Mayo. “We are very pleased to bring this life-changing procedure to our community.” To listen to a podcast featuring Dick Sears and Dr. Sinha, please visit henrymayo.com/IYH.
