Science National Honor Society teams up with Parks & Recreation for an Earth Day Event at Hempfield Park! Volunteers and businesses chip in to plant new trees at the recently renovated Upper Field Complex at Hempfield Park It was a day of hard work full or rewarding experiences for the Hempfield Area School District’s, Science National Honor Society (SNHS) at Hempfield Park. On Saturday, April 24, 2021 a group of nearly 80 students teamed up with the Township’s Parks & Recreation staff to plant 45 new trees at the recently completed Upper Field Complex at Hempfield Park. This ambitious one-day event was the result of a cancelled 2020 project, and the persistence of the Science National Honor Society student’s persistence to leave their legacy in our community. You can’t have a large group of volunteer high school students without feeding them! We are grateful to Firehouse Subs and Dunkin’ for their support of our event.
The Hempfield Area students arrived early, working to dig holes, prepare the root balls, and plant each tree throughout the park. As the group worked through the day, they continued to mulch and water each tree, ensuring a healthy start in their new homes. Five different species of tree were planted, including different varieties of Plums, Maples, Pears and Dogwoods. Hempfield Township purchased the lot of trees from Jason Wilkinson Nursery, who offered a significant discount to help us complete this project.
To honor the volunteerism of the students, the Hempfield Township Board of Supervisor’s issued a proclamation to the group on May 24, 2021. This proclamation commemorates the HASD Science National Honor Society, and the work of the student members, and their advisor, Mr. Doug Cook.
Additionally, Hempfield Township received support from a number of residents and local businesses for this Earth Day event. These businesses included:
After such a successful event, Hempfield Parks & Recreation and the HASD Science National Honor Society are committed to continuing our partnership and working to improve our community! If you or your business are interested in supporting future volunteer days with us, please reach out to Aaron Siko, Director of Parks & Recreation.
