Breaking Ground for the Hempfield TownsHip municipal complex

On August 12th, the Hempfield Township Board of Supervisors broke ground on the future Hempfield Municipal Complex site. Westmoreland County Commissioners and Senator Kim Ward joined them. Movement on the site can be visible by the highly trafficked Route 30 corridor. Visitors will soon see progress on a new road connecting Hempfield Township, Greensburg, and South Greensburg communities, complete with multimodal sidewalks and trails. This exciting new development will be the site of the latest 17-acre park, including a Nature Play Area, Splash Pad, Fitness Area, Yoga Deck, and pavilions. The Township is excited to continue looking forward at the parcel's future, hoping to build an Emergency Services Headquarters, Administrative Building, and Public Works area complete with community gathering spaces. Follow us on social media to keep up-to-date on continued development.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT UPDATES

A GROWING COMMUNITY

New Residential Developments

In recent months, the Township has approved two residential developments. The first is the Valley Green Development, which will feature single-family homes along with improvements to Valley Green Road, including the addition of a pedestrian path that runs parallel to the road. The second project is The Reserve at Foxfield, which will include duplexes and open space for the enjoyment of residents. The Community Development Department is excited to see these projects move forward and looks forward to welcoming our new neighbors upon their completion!

WINTER AND SPRING

Property Maintenance Updates

WANT TO DEVELOP OR SUBDIVIDE YOUR LOT?

Please do not hesitate to reach out to the Community Development Department with any questions or concerns you may have. The department is here to help you navigate the process and ensure that you are able to complete your projects!

OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Over the past year, the Department has worked closely with business owners to enhance existing locations and open new ones. We are pleased with the progress made in our business community and look forward to assisting more business owners in the coming year.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to the Community Development Department with any questions or concerns you may have. The department is here to help you navigate the process and ensure that you are able to complete your projects!

As we start to move into Winter, the Department of Community Development wants to remind the residents to be responsible with your Winter property maintenance and spring cleanups.

As the snowflakes start to fly, please be aware that during snow events we ask residents to not park on the streets to allow our Public Works employees the room they need to keep our roads clear. If we do come across a vehicle impeding the roadway you may get a visit from one of our friendly Code Officers asking you to move your vehicle, and we would appreciate it if you could do so in a timely manner.

Residents are welcome to burn yard waste and twigs on Saturdays between the hours of 8am and 2pm. Fires are required to be a minimum of 25 feet away from any other combustible materials, and 30 feet from any property line. Additionally, they need to be tended by an individual throughout the duration of the burn and have a water supply closely available. No nonyard waste materials are permitted to be burned. We hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable fall and that you will continue to enjoy the changing of the seasons!

PUBLIC WORKS

Crews will now be shifting to winter operations.

Throughout the winter season crews will operate snow removal equipment over 26 different snow routes. The Township spans over 90 square miles, encompassing about 300 miles of roadway.

On average, each snow route covers approximately 12 miles and takes nearly three hours to complete during routine snow removal. Additional time is required for more significant snow events, which may require plowing operations.

In order to assist with efficient snow removal operations, residents are asked to be mindful of the following:

If snow is expected, move your cars into the driveway.

If you are shoveling out the entrance to your driveway, never throw snow directly into the street; shovel towards the high side of your driveway or other area of your property.

If possible, finish clearing your driveway entrance AFTER the final widening pass by the snow plow. DO NOT throw snow into the street.

If you have to go out during hazardous driving conditions, remember to drive slowly, brake slowly, allow plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front, and watch for sudden obstructions.

Please avoid parking in cul-de-sacs so as to allow snow removal equipment room to operate.

Christmas Tree Collection

The Public Works Department will once again be partnering with Westmoreland Cleanways to offer Christmas Tree Recycling. Live, undecorated Christmas tress will be collected from 12/26/24 to 1/14/25 at the island between State Route 136 and Middletown Road, near Hempfield High School. Please make sure that all lights and decorations have been removed, and remove the tree from any tarp or plastic bag used for transport.

demonstration of a vehicle rescue, assisted children with a fire hose demonstration, fire extinguisher simulation and a walk-through fire safety house.

Fire prevention activities didn’t end with this event – members and staff throughout the Hempfield Fire Department, with the assistance of Youngwood and New Stanton Departments, visited Hempfield Area

School District elementary schools and some pre-schools/daycares in the Township to talk about fire safety and how to plan an escape. The students were provided with activity packets and had a chance to tour the fire trucks. Deputy Hearn and members of the department also provided a Fire and Life Safety presentation to the residents of Senior Living on Townsquare Drive and walk-throughs of Weatherwood Manor.

We are grateful for the participation from both the Hempfield Fire Department and the City of Greensburg, as well as the neighboring departments and local agencies that made this year’s event a success:

HEMPFIELD AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS CELEBRATE FIRE SAFETY WEEK

Elementary schools across the Hempfield Area School District participated in Fire Safety Week, with local fire departments visiting to teach students essential fire safety skills. Departments, including the Fort Allen Volunteer Fire Department, Youngwood Volunteer Fire Department and Hempfield Fire Department, among others, came together to educate students on fire prevention, warning signs and how to respond in an emergency situation.

Throughout the week, firefighters spoke to students about key fire safety protocols, such as identifying smoke and fire hazards, the importance of having an escape plan and how to stay calm and call 911 in case of an emergency. The presentations were

designed to give students the knowledge they need to protect themselves and their families in the event of a fire.

"Our goal is to ensure that students understand how to stay safe during a fire and recognize hazards before they become a danger," said one firefighter involved in the event. "Teaching fire safety early can make a real difference."

In addition to classroom presentations, students were given the opportunity to explore fire trucks brought by the departments. Firefighters demonstrated various tools and equipment, including hoses, ladders and protective gear, allowing students to see firsthand how firefighters respond to emergencies. The

students were eager to ask questions and learn more about the life-saving tools used by firefighters.

Fire Safety Week serves as an important opportunity to reinforce fire safety messages in fun and interactive ways. Hempfield Area School District was grateful for the collaboration with local fire departments, who helped make the week educational and engaging for students.

As the week concluded, students expressed their appreciation to the firefighters, with many taking away a renewed sense of responsibility regarding fire safety. Hempfield Area School District looks forward to continuing this partnership with local fire departments in the future to keep fire safety education a priority for its students.

Hempfield Area School District Celebrates Red Ribbon Week

Hempfield Area School District (HASD) observed Red Ribbon Week from Monday, October 28, to Friday, November 1, as part of the nation’s largest druguse prevention campaign. Established in 1985, Red Ribbon Week encourages students and communities to unite in promoting a drug-free lifestyle and making healthy, informed choices. This annual event was celebrated in schools across the country, with students participating in activities that raised awareness about the dangers of drugs and substance abuse.

Red Ribbon Week is celebrated nationwide with a wide range of activities designed to creatively engage students and reinforce the importance of living drug-free. Schools often host themed dress-up days, organize discussions, and hold events promoting a

healthy, drug-free lifestyle. This year, HASD joined the effort with a series of daily themes that encouraged students to actively participate and spread awareness. Red wrist bracelets were also distributed to students to symbolize their commitment.

Throughout the week, homeroom representatives monitored student participation in each theme. The grade level achieving the highest participation percentage won a donut breakfast.

By incorporating fun and engaging activities, the District aimed to not only spread the vital message of living a drug-free life but also foster a sense of community among students.

Fort Allen Elementary Hosts 10th Annual PINK OUT Event

Fort Allen Elementary School recently held its 10th annual Pink Out event, continuing a tradition that has become an integral part of the school community. The Pink Out raises both awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society while giving students and staff a fun and meaningful way to honor those affected by cancer. Since its inception in 2015, the event has grown, becoming an opportunity for the school to unite around a shared cause.

Despite being a single day, the Pink Out still manages to bring in around $500 each year— an impressive amount given the event’s new structure. Each year, the students play an

This year, students had the opportunity to purchase various pink-themed items, including bandanas, dog tag necklaces, pink bracelets and pink under-eye tattoos. The students were encouraged to wear their newly acquired items throughout the

day to help spread awareness and demonstrate solidarity in the fight against cancer.

In addition to the fun accessories, students were also asked to contribute a $1 donation to the American Cancer Society. These donations, while small individually, added up to a significant contribution from the entire school. Many students went the extra mile by dressing head-to-toe in pink, turning the halls of Fort Allen Elementary into a sea of vibrant color. This show of support not only raised awareness, but also sparked conversations among students about the importance of cancer research and supporting those in need.

It serves as an important reminder to students that even small actions, like wearing pink or making a small donation, can contribute to a larger cause. West Hempfield Middle School Encourages

West Hempfield Middle School’s (WHMS) English Language Arts (ELA) department is creating a culture of reading through the "Growing Readers" incentive program. Led by eighth-grade ELA teacher Mrs. Sige and supported by her colleagues, Mrs. Cuccaro, Ms. DeMarco, Mr. Damerow, Mrs. Gacek and Mrs. Steeber, this initiative motivates students to read Accelerated Reader (AR) books. Each time a student completes an AR book, they earn a leaf, which is added to trees displayed throughout the school building. The program, launched during the 2023-24 school year, was designed to inspire students to engage with

books beyond their typical classroom assignments. “The goal is simply to encourage students to develop a genuine interest in reading,” Mrs. Sige explained. “We’ve created a visual representation of their progress that the entire school can see, and this has made reading a more rewarding experience for everyone involved.”

Last year, the program's trees had a whimsical design, featuring bright blue trunks and neoncolored leaves that stood out in the school’s hallways. This year, the trees have been redesigned to appear more natural, aligning with WHMS’s national

parks team themes. Sixth graders are part of the Yellowstone and Badlands teams, seventh graders represent Acadia and Denali and eighth graders belong to Olympic and Joshua Tree. The natural look of the trees has brought a new sense of cohesion and school spirit as they tie into the broader themes of teamwork and exploration.

Although WHMS uses grade-level teams, the "Growing Readers" program deliberately avoids any competitive element between the teams. "We wanted this initiative to focus on personal growth and the enjoyment of reading,

rather than fostering competition,” Mrs. Sige noted. “Our primary aim is to help students develop a lifelong reading habit that brings them joy.”

As students continue to add leaves to the trees throughout the school year, they contribute to a school-wide reading celebration. These trees not only symbolize individual achievements but also represent a collective dedication to literacy. The hope is that the "Growing Readers" program will inspire students to maintain a love of reading that extends far beyond their middle school years and into adulthood.

Giving is the reason for the season… but giving of trash?

The holiday season is a time of giving, but it can also be a very wasteful time of year. In the United States between Thanksgiving and New Years, Americans generate 25% more trash than any other time of the year. This translates to one million extra tons of waste per week. This increase in household garbage at landfills is not the type of “giving” that the holiday season is about, nor is it the type of present that Mother Nature appreciates. This year include Mother Nature on your gift-giving list by utilizing a few waste management techniques.

Christmas Trees

Consider purchasing a real tree instead of an artificial one. Artificial trees are non-biodegradable and not recyclable. Most will eventually end up in landfills, where it takes thousands of years for the PVC plastic to degrade to microplastics. On the other hand, live/real Christmas trees grown at U.S. tree farms provide U.S. jobs, support complex eco-systems, absorb carbon dioxide and other gases, release oxygen, stabilize soil and provide refuge for wildlife. After the holidays, live trees can be recycled back into the environment through tree cycling.

Tree Cycling in Hempfield Township

Recycle your live Christmas trees by dropping them off for tree cycling at no cost. The trees are chipped by Hempfield employees and used as mulch to beautify community parks and eventually decompose into valuable humus to nourish and renew the soil.

Remove the tree from any tree bags and make sure it is bare of ALL decorations and lights.

Online Shopping

Do your research before shopping online by reading reviews and checking size guides. A higher percentage of online purchases are ultimately returned when compared with products purchased at brick-and-mortar stores. According to an Arizona State University professor, more than 80% of returns, especially clothing, ultimately end up in landfills. Unfortunately, it can be cheaper to landfill an item than to process, inspect, repack, and mail it to another customer.

Recycle the packaging material from the shipments. Cardboard boxes and packing paper are accepted in Hempfield’s curbside recycling program. Cardboard boxes and paper are also accepted at Westmoreland Cleanways Recycling Center. We also accept most plastic bags, air pillows, plastic mailers, and block packaging foam (Styrofoam), which are unacceptable in the curbside recycling program.

Christmas Decoration and Lights

Buy durable decorations that can be used year after year. Donate unwanted decorations and shop for new decorations at thrift shops to minizine wastefulness.

Gift Wrapping

Give a gift that needs no packaging, like an experience. Purchase holiday cards, wrapping paper, and gift bags that can be recycled by avoiding paper with glitter or metallic foil, as these are not recyclable. Choose bows and ribbon that can be reused the following

Hosting parties

Consider using reusable tablecloths, glasses, plates, and utensils. (thrift shops are a great place to find these items). Although convenient, single-use plastic items aren’t recyclable and when thrown away in a landfill, last for hundreds of years before they degrade into microplastics. Be mindful of preparing too much food or cookies. In 2022, it was estimated that 305 million pounds of food went to waste from Thanksgiving meals across the U.S. In a landfill, this waste undergoes bacterial decomposition, producing a mixture of greenhouse gases including methane and carbon dioxide.

The center can also accept glass bottles and jars (which are not accepted in the curbside recycling program).
