As you all know, the Annual General Meeting was held on schedule and was attended by 131 members (either in person or by proxy) and proceeded uneventfully with all resolutions passed and the nominations for the General Committee elected unopposed. I am most grateful for your continued support.

DON JOHNSTON Commodore

The General Committee has met and dealt with all of its initial regulatory issues, elected the chairpersons of its 10 committees and agreed on 37 innovative goals for its current term. The General Committee has also agreed to continue with the Staff Lai See Fund, whereby members are invited to pay one month’s subscription on a voluntary basis towards this fund, with a provision allowing members the opportunity to contribute a different amount or pay no contribution at all. All funds raised are distributed equally to all staff members. This practice is adopted by many other clubs to ensure that all staff are treated fairly at Chinese New Year. The social unrest, which has prevailed for the last six months, has impacted on the celebrations of Sailability due to the withdrawal of participants. The Tenth Anniversary Celebrations for the Hong Kong event have been postponed to 2020, and the Sailability Asian Championships have been cancelled altogether. This is extremely sad, but understandable under the circumstances. By now, most of you know the new General Manager, Rene Verhulst, who is settling in very well. And I expect that by the time that you read this, the new Human Resources Manager, Rony Wong will also have taken up his duties on 2 December 2019. We have long held the view that the Club needs an HR professional to deal with staff issues and to ensure regulatory compliance in a complex legal environment. My hope is that one of the first of many positive outcomes will be a reduction in the staff turnover rate, which should lead to a higher level of satisfaction on the part of both staff and members. Once again, I draw your attention to the great progress that we continue to make on a long list of items—some of which are not visible to members— and I urge you to read the various reports in Hebe Jebes to stay abreast of future progress in this regard.

REPORTS

REPORTS

Regarding the 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race, this was indeed an outstanding event, with over $1.23 million raised directly and indirectly. The race was affected by a squall, which came through in the closing minutes capsizing a number of the fleet of 34 dinghies. The Incident Management and Control Procedure kicked in, as did the training of all safety boat crews, and all sailors were recovered and safely back on shore within ten minutes. This was a superb recovery by the staff led by Rob Allen, our volunteers and the Organising Committee ably led by Bridget Chan.

In closing, the festive season is approaching, and I take this opportunity to hope that you all had a safe and happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year to come.

REPORTS

HAB Expression of Support—draft has been sent to the Home Affairs Bureau (HAB) for its comments prior to formal submission. After a bit of toing and froing, the HAB has come back with a couple of minor amendments that we need to address. So, we are cautiously optimistic that this is a workable approach.

PAUL ARKWRIGHT

Vice Commodore

Project Manager—to help cope with the growing liaison, chasing and management that comes from multiple projects, we have sought expressions of interest for engaging a part-time Project Manager (initially for one day per week) to help manage projects once seawall is underway. This will grow quite quickly to a fulltime manager role, as more projects come on line. Seawall repairs—the site investigation report has been submitted to the Building Department (BD) for the BA14 approval and we currently awaiting AECOM's full design recommendations which we will bring to GenCom shortly. Marina pile extension/replacement project—the studies to date indicate that the existing piles are not strong enough so we will need to replace in-situ with new piles to support marina pontoons. Before proceeding to Stage 3B of the consultancy agreement, i.e., "Design and Costing of Replacement Marine Piles and H-Columns", we have requested ballpark budget costs from AECOM before Christmas of the following two options: • Option 1: Retain and extend existing piles, with new piles added as necessary, to achieve the 25-year design life; • Option 2: Complete replacement of all piles (with additional piles if necessary) to achieve the 50-year design life. AECOM will issue the final report with the amendments shortly. General utilities survey—completed for use by all subsequent contractors on site. Access lift platform—we have obtained Fire Services Department approval for the FM200 fire suppression system and are awaiting BD approval of the same. In line with Carmen Chan's advice (our Authorised Person), we are now submitting the amended plans for the new access lift to BD. In parallel, the FM 200 system will then be bespoke for the Club to ensure we are fire safety compliant throughout the premises. In this regard, the Home Affairs Department (HAD) has written to the Club in respect of the (Safety of Premises) Ordinance Cap. 376 with their request for the status of the ‘proposed Alteration & Addition (A&A) works’. We have replied to clarify that the proposed alteration and addition works will have some minor effects on the existing layout of the licensed premises, as shown on the plans currently held with their office and that we are currently in the process of finalising and obtaining BD approval and sign-off for the A&A works. As soon as this has been approved, we will then submit the requested updated plans with the revised licensed area demarcated for their consideration and approval.”

REPORTS

Let me start by saying a huge thank you to Rene Verhulst, our interim GM, who has hit the ground running in getting things better organised at the Club, and I look forward to working with him and his team as we continue to get stuff done. For the Planning & Works Committee (PWC) it’s been another busy couple of months and here are the bullet-point highlights on progress to date.

First Place & Beneteau Cup, HKPN 1251+, Solaris Yachts Around the Island Race 2019

Camera to monitor sea level around the club, especially during typhoons—we are researching an interruptible power supply for a selected camera focused on a marine pile (with height measurements marked on it), to help better monitor sea levels, during typhoons. And finally… In other news, I did have time to do a bit of sailing, and in the last month on Patrick Yam’s Baby Beluga, 32.5 Beneteau First, we managed to take home a bit of silverware in mainland China and Hong Kong, China.

Firstly, my very best wishes for 2020 to all members. We are at the gateway of a new and exciting decade! For those who went overseas, I hope you had a pleasant and well-deserved holiday break!

RENE VERHULST General Manager

My first two months with the Club have flown by—it’s been a very interesting, enjoyable and busy time. I have had the pleasure of chatting with many of you, and I am looking forward to meeting many more. Thank you all for making me feel at home. I am listening to both my team and members, in order to learn what is going on in the Club and to hear your comments, ideas and suggestions, so I can get a good understanding of what lives among the members. From there on I’ll move forward to try and make the necessary improvements, under the directions and guidance of the General Committee. I can see a lot of potential to implement changes that will benefit the Club in many ways. Keep an eye on the approaching F&B events for the Chinese New Year and the upcoming sailing calendar. The traditional Lion Dance, Boat Blessings and Burns Supper are all on the programme, and the Club will be closed all day on the 25 January 2020. The Kowloon Cup is scheduled for the 18 and 19 January and will end up at the Yau Ley Seafood restaurant for the fun prize-giving event. We strive to keep our members’ database up to date, so please ensure that you inform the Club should you change your address, family status, mobile number or email address so that we can keep you abreast of all that’s going on at the Club. (Contact Jessica Yau at membership@hhyc. org.hk).

REPORTS

REPORTS

It is my pleasure and privilege to take over the helm of the Hebe Haven Yacht Club from Lisa Keatley. Set in the unique and quaint area of Sai Kung, the Club is indeed a haven with some of the best sailing waters and beaches in Hong Kong. For me, it’s also a bit of a ‘homecoming’ because I have spent many years in Hong Kong and Macau in the early 2000s. Over the last 10 years I have lived and worked in Singapore and, before that, pretty much all over the world, as a hospitality ‘Gipsy’.

On behalf of the entire team of the HHYC, I would like to wish you and your family great festive months ahead and a happy and prosperous Year of the Rat. Kung Hei Fat Choy! I look forward to meeting you all at the Club.

SAIL TRAINING CENTRE

I want to start this article by taking the opportunity to thank all of the full-time sailing team, who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes and during each training session, program and event to make sure that the Club has been represented to the best of our abilities to the membership and members of the public. They deserve all the praise for making our Sailing School and Club a fun and vibrant environment for you to enjoy your sailing and water-based activities.

have seen tremendous development under his guidance. They now participate in local regattas and we hope to see the Sailors challenging at future HK Ranking Regattas. Once again, we have seen hundreds of students from both local and international schools take part in various training programs with us at the Club. The programmes vary from initial one day taster days, after school sailing and taking part in a full-week sailing course during a Challenge Week / CAS Week program through the School. Large numbers of students have continued with further training in the sport and we have been pleased to see many students become regular sailors at the club. School holidays have seen record numbers taking part in sailing and watersports courses during Easter, summer and October half-terms. We look forward to working with the HKSF New Sailing Scheme in the future— now that they accommodate optimist and keelboat training under the new Sailing Scheme they have recently launched.

Huge thanks to the sailing team 2019 proved to be not only a successful year for the STC, but a year full of challenges, development and growth, all whilst having a lot of fun on and off the water. Literally hundreds of students have been taking to the water, with major events in both keelboats and dinghies throughout the year, as well as significant partnerships such as the Sun Hung Kai ‘SCALLYWAG FOUNDATION’—using our club as the home of their new Sailing Scheme for underprivileged local students and members of the community to enjoy the opportunity to get out onto the water and take part in our sport. The Hebe Dragons have excelled under the leadership of our coaches, Alfred, Antonio and Clement, with a large number of new and beginner sailors joining both the Blue and Green Fleet Squads. Team Leaders Harvey, Frances, Iris, Mariken, Hermen and Rob B, have provided great support and a clear communication channel to the parents of the sailors in the Laser and Optimist Squads. A special mention to the Laser Squad who had 5 out of 6 HK National Squad Sailors take part in the Canadian Laser World Championships, as well as regular outstanding performances from our Youth Sailors, Vienney, Kristopher, Felix, Seb, Mason, Faber and of course Peter Jessop who was recently crowned #1 ranked Optimist Sailor in HK at the ABC Southside Regatta. Congratulations to the entire sailor sin, the squad who has shown true sportsmanship on and off the water, and represented the values we have in place at HHYC and in the Hebe Dragons. HHYC is the Home Base of the HK Laser Regional Squad. This Squad has been training with Coach Clement and we

Saturdays are as popular as ever with Sailors taking to the waters from Beginner to Advanced levels in our Junior program. Alongside Sailability HK, Saturdays are always buzzing with a good vibe and atmosphere at the Club; so come and check it out to see what we get up to at Hebe Haven. The Club will be running our annual Assistant Instructor Course in early spring, so if you are a keen sailor wanting to either help out on Sailing Courses or a young sailor who isn’t interested in racing, then this is the pathway into coaching at the Club. Speaking of Volunteers, we are always in need of members and volunteers to help us with the race management teams for both dinghy and keelboat events during the year. Don’t worry if you are not experienced or confident, as we offer training and support in what is actually a great way to meet other members and have a fun day on the water, either on the Committee Boat ‘Hebe One’ or as a mark layer on the Rescue Boats. The Club is now a certified RYA Powerboat School, and we offer training courses that are very much practical-based programmes. Unlike the HK Powerboat License which is all theory and shorebased, the RYA Powerboat Courses are very much hands-on and will give you the confidence to take out your new boat or to volunteer as a safety boat driver or mark layer at one of the many regattas and events we host at the Club.

STC ANNUAL REVIEW

2020 is going to be even bigger and better, with exciting plans for new events, more training and programmes scheduled to operate out of the club. However, we cannot achieve this without the support of our membership and community. Please do take the time to come and learn to sail and to develop your skills further. If you’re a sailor already, join a member who has a racing yacht or learn to drive a Safety Boat so that you are able and confident to come out and get involved with the Club Events. We are a family club, it’s a lot of fun, but we need your help to make this happen. I look forward to seeing you down at the club soon and on the water.

It wasn’t long before Xena had her spinnaker fully flying, with that she kicked up her heels and regained the race lead. Both boats stayed right, and Xena, although sailing a longer course to the bottom mark, was slowly but inexorably easing away from Outrageous. After the gybe to port to take the boats back into the leeward mark, there was little Outrageous could do, but sail as fast and low as possible. It was then two thirds of the way down the run that Xena ran into technical problems, and was forced to drop her spinnaker, and ultimately retire. The next lap saw more shifty conditions, and it was a balancing act of trying to take advantage of the wind shifts, whilst minimising the number of manoeuvres while heading up the course. Talkinghead had opted to go up the right side of the course, while Outrageous stayed in the middle. But, when we converged nearing the weather mark, it was all status quo.

WINTER MONSOON SERIES RACE 1

by Adam Glendinning

The opening round of the HHYC Monsoon Winter Series was held on 19 October. The racing was held in fine warm fall conditions, with a moderate SE breeze of 10 – 12 knots. Two windward/leeward races were scheduled, and in the IRC class there was a light turnout for the opening round, with just four boats signing on—Xena, a powerful X-55, Talking Head, X-Terminator and Outrageous. Warning signal for the three lap Race 1 was 1355, for a 1400 start, and all the crews were eager to be back on the water after a nice break since the end of the 2019 Typhoon series. All the boats made a fine start, with X-Terminator up at the committee boat end. Talking Head was off to our starboard, with Xena down the line towards the pin end. With only four boats on the line, everyone had a clear lane, and on board Outrageous we were just after a clean start in this first race of the new series. Shifty conditions were on offer for the first beat, and indeed

26

HEBE JEBES • JAN/FEB 2020

for the afternoon, and a drag race ensued with Xena, and Outrageous trying to gain enough water to cross Talkinghead and X-Terminator. Talkinghead became the first boat to tack away, when we were about to point higher, and put her in our bad air. Xena was next to go and crossed the fleet, but with the shifty conditions, a game of snakes and ladders ensued. On Outrageous, we were trying to not let Xena break away.  When Xena came back across on starboard farther up the course, she crossed us, but we had held the gap to 100 meters. When she overstood the port Lay line, we reached the weather mark together, with Xena just inside Outrageous.  Both boats hoisted their spinnakers on a bear away set, Xena her big grey asymmetric, and Outrageous her symmetrical. Flying a symmetrical kite, Outrageous was able to point deeper towards the bottom mark, and cut inside Xena’s transom. When on the hoist, Xena suffered a wrap in the spinnaker, this allowed Outrageous to nudge her bow ahead.

By the start of the third and final leg, the winds had softened markedly—conditions that don’t favour the IOR design of Outrageous. By the time the boats rounded the weather mark the final time, Talkinghead was just behind Outrageous, and both yachts hoisted the spinnakers on a bear away set. In the softer conditions, Talkinghead was able to use her asymmetrical spinnaker to good effect, and slowly went over the top of Outrageous. When the yachts gybed back onto port for the run to finish line, Talkinghead comfortably crossed Outrageous to finish with line honours, and first on corrected time. X-Terminator crossed the line third, but on corrected time came a well-deserved second, with Outrageous third. The second race of the afternoon was started as soon as was practicable after the remaining divisions had finished Race 1. The wind had thankfully filled back in to a SE 10 – 12 knots. A change of helm on Outrageous saw Colin Johnson back on the tiller, and with that, a more assertive start strategy. Positioned well, we were just to windward of Talkinghead in the approach to the line, just inside the committee boat. Time, speed and distance were all looking great, and all would be perfect if not the presence of an HKPN boat meandering down the start line on port, inside 10 seconds to the gun.

Outrageous tacked on the next knock, to consolidate, and rounded the weather mark leading the fleet comfortably.

Simon Jones, Rear Commodore—Sailing highlighted this issue in his September column in Hebe Jebes, and it serves as a reminder for boats not in the start sequence to please keep clear of the start line.

The remaining legs went off smoothly, and Outrageous finished with line honours. Behind, X-Terminator sailed an excellent race, finishing second on the water, a minute ahead of Talkinghead. On corrected time, it was Outrageous, X-Terminator and Talkinghead all within three minutes of each other.

This heart-stopping moment aside, it was a clean, even start by the fleet. The shifty conditions carried over from Race 1, and a healthy lift part way up the first beat had us nearly laying the weather mark. The committee boat end had indeed paid off.

It was a fantastic afternoon of racing—blue skies, fresh breezes (most of the time) and close racing. Sincere thanks to RO’s Eric Tomter, Rob Allen and Queenie Ho from the sailing office. Also, to Colin Johnson for (temporarily) giving me the helm of Outrageous in Race 1.

28

HEBE JEBES • JAN/FEB 2020

MONSOON WINTER SERIES 2019 RACES 1 & 2

by Chris Howarth

It is good to see the continuing collaboration between the territory’s yacht clubs and the three-part Monsoon Series 2019-20. The first part is the Hebe Haven Yacht Club’s Monsoon W inter Series 2019, comprising eight races over five Saturdays from 19 October to 14 December 2019. The second part is the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s Monsoon Spring Cup on 22 and 23 February 2020, followed by another eight races in the Hebe Haven Yacht Club’s Monsoon Spring Series from 7 March to 25 April 2020. Results for the overall series will use the Cox-Sprague Scoring System, and all races will be in or around Port Shelter. Saturday 19 October, saw the start of the HHYC’s Monsoon Winter Series 2019 comprising two geometric races. Initial forecasts were varied with 6 – 7 knots building, whilst others were predicting easing breezes.

However, out in Port Shelter, a good 9 to 10-knot breeze was blowing. Incidentally, with the Rugby World Cup being televised in the Club’s Garden Bar, the organisers were anxious to keep races short to enable the completion of the prize-giving before the second quarter-final began at 1815. Conditions were just right when the warning signal for the IRC boats was sounded at 1355 for their three-lap windward/leeward race to a mark set at 0.7 nautical miles and 120 degrees distant. The X-55 Xena had a good start but later dropped its sails and retired leaving just three boats racing. The Sportsboats, which might otherwise have been racing, were competing elsewhere in their own championships.

The second start at 1405 saw 13 HKPN boats hit the line with Bits & Pieces best placed. Lazy Piggy was caught OCS and obliged to restart, whilst the rest headed out for two laps of the windward/leeward course around a mark at 0.6nm. In IRC, after three laps, Talkinghead overhauled Outrageous by 30 seconds to take line and handicap honours ahead of X-Terminator, which experienced spinnaker halyard problems, and Outrageous which came in 3rd. The MC 31, H3O, claimed line honours in HKPN but lost out to Bits & Pieces on handicap, with Windseeker in 3rd.

Bucephalus rounds the mark

A second race of two laps for IRC soon got underway at 1520 with Outrageous and Talkinghead leading the field whilst X-Terminator was slow out of the blocks. HKPN again followed on their shorter two-lap race at 1530 with only La March missing from the line-up. H3O and Bits & Pieces tacked early into cleaner air although the breeze was indeed easing, down to 6.5 knots. H3O benefitted significantly on its downwind runs by using its turquoise asymmetric to lead the HKPN fleet on the first rounding of the leeward mark, but was overhauled by Bits & Pieces on the upwind leg. H3O again closed the gap but missed out on line honours behind Bits & Pieces by four seconds, which claimed the daily double. H3O again finished 2nd with Temujin in 3rd.

HKPN started at 1405

The relatively short-handed crews on No One Else, Bucephalus and DEA II, sailing without spinnakers, finished well down the pack as the breeze continued to ease. Back at the Club, after the awards presentation of pennants and bottles of wine, the sponsored San Miguel rapidly disappeared.

MONSOON WINTER SERIES 2019 RACE 3

by David Robinson

Proceedings were a little rushed for Race 3 of the Monsoon Winter Series 2019, held on Saturday, the 2 November. With the Rugby World Cup being livestreamed in the Garden Bar of the Hebe Haven Yacht Club at 1700, the start time of the scheduled islands race was brought forward to 1330. Normally, afternoon racing starts at 1400.

Not long after the starts, the wind eased, and it was slow progress around Table Island, leaving it to port. But gradually, the breeze improved and the IRC boats picked up speed with the wind on the beam and headed for Bluff, through the gap and into Rocky Harbour, around Bay and down to the shortened finish off Table Island.

The committee boat dropped anchor near the mouth of Port Shelter in an easterly of 8 to 9 knots. Race Officer, Eric Tomter, decided on shorter island courses and at 1330, sent the IRC fleet around Table, Bluff, Bay and Table Islands, with a scheduled finish off Little Palm Beach (Course 31). For the HKPN boats, he chose the similar, but shorter, Course 30 which took in Table, Bay and Table Islands with a scheduled finish near Little Palm Beach. They set off at 1335.

Also enjoying the breeze into Rocky Harbour, the HKPN frontrunners were soon rounding Bay Island, hoisting their kites and running back down to the shortened finish off Table. First across the line was the China-built MC31, H30, at 14:49:15 but a minute later Bits & Pieces finished and claimed handicap honours. H30 was 2 nd and Windseeker 3 rd with Lazy Piggy in 4th.

There were six entries in IRC but only four showed up and X-Terminator subsequently retired, leaving Xena, Outrageous and Talkinghead to battle it out. In HKPN, there were 13 entries; nine showed up with hot favourites Bits & Pieces, H30 and Lazy Piggy all in with a chance.

H30, 2nd in HKPN

The big X-55, Xena, took line honours in IRC at 15:25:18 but the winner on handicap was Talkinghead, with Outrageous in 2 nd. The boats then made their ways back to their respective clubs while the crowds gathered at Hebe Haven Yacht Club to watch the Rugby World Cup final, England vs South Africa.

Quest flew home in 30 minutes and 15 seconds to take both line and handicap honours. In 2 nd, on handicap, was Talkinghead with Goddess in 3 rd , followed by X-Terminator and last but not least, RB.

Two boats in HKPN retired—Lazy Piggy and No One Else.

There was talk onshore of more than 20 boats taking part in the afternoon’s racing. Something to look forward to but, as the first start at 1400 drew nearer, only 15 had appeared—five in the IRC division and 10 in the HKPN division. Race Officer, Nigel Slattery, on the committee boat anchored in the middle of Port Shelter, opted for Course 17 with top marks laid at 0.8 nautical miles for IRC and 0.7 nautical miles for HKPN. In the 8 to 9-knot easterly blowing at the time, these were laid near Shelter Island. After rounding their respective marks (A1 and A2), the boats were then required to run back past the committee boat and round either one of two bottom marks (C1 and C2). After rounding, they had to beat back 0.1 nautical miles and effectively ‘cross the start’ again, i.e. between the committee boat and the ODM. This choice of marks made for ‘a thinking race’.

Quest, IRC line and handicap honours (Monsoon Winter Series 2019, Race 5)

At 1400, the horn went for the IRC fleet in 7 to 8 knots of breeze. A Sportsboats division had been scheduled for a 1405 start, but none had shown up. A considerate RO gave them a start anyway. Needless to say, no boats were over the line. At 1410, the 10-strong HKPN fleet got away and headed upwind for the A2 mark. After two laps, in 39 minutes and 19 seconds, Quest romped home to take line honours but on handicap got pushed into 2 nd place behind Goddess. Talkinghead was 3 rd . In HKPN, first across the line was a determined Bits & Pieces, but despite their hard work, they could only manage 3rd on handicap behind Julie Mackenzie’s Ricochet and Bridget Chan’s Windseeker. A surprise arrival on the course was Sam Chan and his crew on It’s My Pleasure. With no other Sportsboat to compete against, they entered their Magic 25 in HKPN, swelling the numbers in this division from 15 to 16. Worried that the second race would run out of wind, Slattery shortened the course for both divisions by laying a single turn mark in front of the committee boat (Course 24). Again, two laps, but Race 5 was looking to be a quickie. And it was.

Goddess finished 1st in Race 4 and came 3rd in IRC in Race 5

後 來 居 上 的, 是 Sam Chan 及 其 隊 伍 的 It’s My Pleasure。

by Kay Rawbone As we come to the end of 2019 and the beginning of the New Year 2020, we have many new things to celebrate and be proud of. Our numbers, once again, have been amazing this year with 1,280 people sailing with us up to October 2019, 388 of whom were new sailors. A big ‘thank you' to Sun Hung Kai for their support in providing sailing for the underrepresented youth of Hong Kong, which has increased our numbers. Earlier this year we were amongst the top 10 busiest Sailability Centres globally—I wonder where we will be at the end of 2019. 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race—What a great race and weekend we all had. Sailability had 9 Hansa 303s sailing, with four teams sailing for the whole 24 hours; Para Warriors, Friends of Para Warriors, Saturday Sailors and one boat from the Treats Fleet. Our results were also outstanding. Many thanks to HHYC and the Charity Event Organisers for their amazing work in getting the event up and running for 2019. The recent Cheque Presentation evening saw Sailability receiving a whopping HK$200,000 from the event. This really is an amazing amount and as we go through 2020, I am sure you will see where these funds have been used. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the HK$1M raised for the five charities this year. We had a couple of disappointments too: the cancellation of our first Open International Regatta, where 23+ countries had expressed an interesting in sailing in Hong Kong from 2 – 8 December. As we now move forward, we will be working on bringing the Hansa Worlds, also an Open Event, to Hong Kong in 2023. Maybe we will have even more countries participating! Watch out HHYC; this will really put us all on the map.

Sailability Hong Kong’s 10th Anniversary It was with great disappointment that we felt the need to postpone what was going to be a very special day for all of us on 23 November 2019, our 10th Anniversary. However, watch this space, as it will not go without a celebration. A new date will be announced in early 2020 and we will celebrate in style, as we continue to provide more sailing opportunities to the under-represented within our Hong Kong Community. From our first 4 Sailability sailors, Alexandra, Greig, Sean and Joshua in 2009, we have now had 2300+ new sailors join our programs, with many returning on a regular basis; from other charities, schools and the general public, to participate in regular sailing courses. It is for the commitment shown by many that Mike and I would like to send out a very special thank you to all our donors, volunteers, supporters and of course our Sailors over the past 10 years because without you, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. New programs The latter quarter of 2019 saw Sailability reach out to even more groups within Hong Kong, as World Sailing announced the inclusion of more sectors of the community within their calendar for 2020 and beyond. Recently new sailors from the following groups joined us for the first time: Hong Kong Society for the Blind with multiple disabilities You may remember the clowns from the 24HR Charity Dinghy Race. They were part of the group who sailed with us on 27 October with their parents, siblings and carers. What a fantastic group this is to work with and we have another session with them in December and more in 2020.

Lutheran School for the Deaf—12 sailors joined us in early November for their first day on the water. Ages ranged from 15 to 20 years old and it was great to see five young ladies in the group. I may be biased, but the ladies proved to be better sailors than the guys during their first sail! World Sailing has recently introduced Deaf Sailing into their calendar so that we could be watching the formation of Hong Kong’s first Deaf Sailing team. They all had a great day, and we were encouraged by how well they managed during their session. This is one of the schools targeted via our Sun Hung Kai Scallywag Program, so thank you Sun Hung Kai. It was indeed a learning curve for us all as we develop special communication skills for use on the water for our hearing impaired sailors, which included international signs for—sails ok, sails need adjusting, sheet in and sheet out. 2020 and beyond Our 2020 programs will encompass more sailing for the Visually Impaired and, if you have listened to my recent podcast (www.hashtagimpact.com/season4), you will have heard about sailing for the Elderly too; another great passion of mine. We have already undertaken one day’s training for a group of six Golden Age Sailors, with them and others wanting more lessons. The Golden Age sailors with Sailability may be older but are definitely not forgotten, and this program will provide many positives such as; new friendships, improved mental wellness, increased agility, improved concentration, social and communication skills, spatial awareness and confidence etc. For all our Sailors, getting out, having an interest and keeping busy is so important and as more new groups join Sailability the more lives, we are able to change.

Jardines Mindset—who offer support for people in recovery via the Mental Health Association of Hong Kong and other local NGOs, invited 14 sailors and 10 volunteers for a day of sailing. This was the first sail for most of the group, and again it was an outstanding success. They too have already booked a return visit with more new sailors. We hope that having the opportunity to sail, with the help of our Para Sailing Team and our own caring and understanding instructors and volunteers, will help significantly with building their confidence and self-esteem during their recovery. For me, the biggest success of the day was that every sailor was able to stand up and talk about their experience and feelings during their first sailing session.

Our mission ‘Making sailing accessible to EVERYONE’ is something of which all of us at Sailability are very proud. Future of Para Sailing The continuing growth of Para Sailing is very important to us and World Sailing has recently asked all MNAs (Hong Kong Sailing Federation in HK) for details of up to 4 events planned in 2020 and 2021 to include Para Sailing in open events or specific Para events. 2019 results will also be submitted and will help tremendously to improve the work on the reinstatement process for sailing in the Paralympic Games, which will start again in 2020. Providing these details will allow World Sailing to develop the international ranking to implement quotas and qualification slots for The Hague 2022 (Sailing World Championships) which for the first time will include Para Sailing within the Olympic Classes. The Hempel World Cup Series events in 2020 will include 2.4mRs and/or Hansa 303s, which are boats already owned by Sailability Hong Kong. The World Sailing Board has confirmed support of the discipline and commitment to the development of Para World Sailing in 2020 and beyond. We, therefore, need to be moving towards these dates and the provision of more training and competition for our sailors—participation in more international and regional events to gain more experience on different waters. Our fund-raising campaigns will, therefore, need to be more aggressive than ever before! Intellectually Disabled Sailors will also participate in World Sailing class events, via INAS, the largest global organisation to provide sporting events for ID sailors. We are very happy about this as we already have taught many sailors in this category. We will therefore also be concentrating on this area for the first Global INAS Regatta in 2023 where we hope our Hong Kong Team will shine. As we work towards more inclusive sailing in 2020 and beyond, we are looking for younger sailors and even more female sailors to learn to sail and possibly represent Hong Kong at International Events in the future! Know anyone who fits into these categories? If so, please refer them to us.

LORETTE ROBERTS VISITS HHYC by Sarah L Cook

It was a real privilege to meet Lorette Roberts; an author, illustrator and sketch artist who recently came to HHYC to hold a relaxed and fun workshop in the Garden Bar. A small cohort of her devoted fans and other budding artists positioned themselves around the far edge of the bar so that they could get in touch with their inner artist selves and draw/paint/ sketch by the harbour. The weather was fantastic and we were soon working hard, sharpening pencils, applying pen to paper, colouring and taking in the ever-moving scenery of yachts, motor crafts, dinghies and incredible life on the water that is part of life at Hebe Haven Yacht Club. Lorette, a well-known artist who lived in Hong Kong and now spends her time in the UK at her Suffolk Studio, provided incredibly useful tips on how to

illustrate that elusive sampan and get the shading and definition of the waves and water right. It was all extremely relaxing and great fun. We also had the opportunity to purchase Lorette’s newest edition to her publishing portfolio, About Boats, a most lively and vibrant depiction of all the wonderful vessels in Hong Kong. In addition to her instantly recognisable style and colours, you will also find some historic references, sketches and paintings of the icons in Victoria Harbour, yachts big and small, the usual busy working vessels and many varieties of large and small riverboats. It’s all stunningly illustrated together with the ropes, floats, fenders and anchors that are always nearby and includes all of Lorette’s hand-written notes of interesting trivia, facts discovered in her research and comments about the boats.

In common with all her books, About Boats does not claim to be a reference tome but it endeavours to conjure up memories and to trigger the imagination. For example, what does Charlotte Dundas have to do with tugboats? Where would you put a ‘long button’? Also, whilst slowly turning each delightful page, don’t forget to spot her little snails that are delightfully placed throughout the book. Lorette says she can’t remember a time when she didn’t paint, make cards or write books. Apart from a five-day watercolour course, she has had no formal training, just an incredible amount of practice! Travelling and living abroad for many years, Lorette has developed her skills in sketching and researching local customs and curiosities. She also edited and illustrated a monthly ‘site magazine’ whilst living in Construction Villages in South Africa and Saudi Arabia.

Dynamic life on the water is illustrated with pencils, black pens, paints and brushes

While living in Hong Kong, she continued to sketch and paint and it occurred to her that all those sketches and paintings might, if put together, make a fine sketchbook. They did! The sketchbooks Sights & Secrets Sketches and Paintings of Hong Kong were created and were followed shortly after by several more sketchbooks about the Far East and related topics. The sketchbooks inevitably led to commissions from private individuals, charities and hotels. In particular, Lorette provided the sketches and drawings for the Peninsula Hotel in their book entitled Our Hong Kong. We all loved our sketching afternoon and it was a real pleasure to have her at HHYC, so please Lorette; come back and see us all again soon!

Despite a lack of formal training, Loretta has used extensive practice to hone her incredible sketching skills

Sights & Secrets: Sketches and Paintings of Hong Kong

Use the right grip: simply changing the way you hold the pen can add an extra dimension to any drawing, making it stand out and be absolutely unique

How to hold the pencil correctly is the first step to master with sketching

REVOLUTIONARY AUTO LIFEBUOY LEADS NEW TREND AMONG COAST GUARD TEAMS On the Brighton coast of England and Gold Coast of Australia, a high-tech device is getting more and more attention from yacht owners and water sport enthusiasts. It’s not some entertainment gadget but an autonomous life-saving equipment that can buoy up one’s holiday with higher level of safety insurance. It’s the Dolphin1 Smart Lifebuoy. Featured with two propellers, it can zip through the water at up to 15km per hour. The Dolphin1 is a revolutionary life-saving equipment that is leading a new trend to the field of water sports. Reported by BBC News, local businesses in Brighton have clubbed together to bring the device to the seaside town, marking its first UK deployment. They believe it will be useful in helping to rescue drunken customers from seafront bars, who venture into the water after one too many drinks. Time is critical when rescuers are alerted to a swimmer who is in trouble, for example a surfer who's taken a dive or a yacht guest who has fallen overboard. The Dolphin 1 is a truly autonomous lifebuoy that can secure the safety of both rescuer and swimmer. When an alert is raised that a swimmer is in trouble, the rescue team can toss the Dolphin 1 into the water. From the water's edge, the motorised lifebuoy can then be powered on in the water using the handheld remote and directed to where it's needed. The wireless operation range can be up to 500 m and if the rescue craft is overturned by choppy waves, the remote operator can easily flip it back over from afar. According to its developer, Ocean Alpha, Dolphin1 is not intended to replace human lifeguards but to help in their rescue efforts. The Dolphin 1 takes seconds to deploy and enables rescue crews to maintain their visual of the casualty at all times. The bright orange plastic hull has a bumper in the front to minimize accidental impact injuries and two fog lights in case of poor visibility. Each of the two propellers is enclosed in delicate casing to shield them from the flailing arms of victims, and to make sure they don't get tangled up with debris or trailing plants. The Dolphin1 has been widely introduced to coast guard teams, yacht owners and beach hotels in UK, Poland, America, Australia, Japan, Thailand and India. It is gradually changing the way people conduct rescue on water. For more information about Dolphin1, please visit: www.tgusv.com, or contact 852-9652 3204 (Steve)

ECF SAINT TOO CANAAN COLLEGE OUR FIRST CLUB SUN HUNG KAI SCALLYWAG FOUNDATION PROGRAMME

Assistant Principal Mr Lee (Left) & Principal Ms Tsui (Right) interviewed at HHYC

by Camellia Poon

A long time ago, back in 2009, ECF Saint Too Canaan College started organising Sailing Taster Programmes for students. As shared by Ms Tsui, the Principal of ECF Saint Too Canaan College, one of the NET teachers Ms Kylie had a great passion for watersports and under tremendous encouragement from the school, initiated a Sailing Taster Day every summer for Form 1 to Form 5 students. This helped them become relaxed while experiencing an activity on the water. The current NET teacher, Ms Rose, also a veteran sailor, carefully selected nine students to join the Level 1 and 2 certification programmes, having it pushed forward after close collaboration with HHYC and most importantly supported by the generous subsidies given by Sun Hung Kai & Co. Foundation. The school proactively allows its students to develop diverse fields of interest, get connected with society and broaden their horizons. One example is where teachers organise various Interest Clubs in the school and, thus, instil good values and ethos in students; a n d o n e i n t e re s t t h a t b e s t d e m o n s t r a t e s t h e s e learnings is sailing.

Students from ECF Saint Too Canaan College give the thumbs up, enjoying the time in their first sailing session

According to Principal Tsui, nowadays, students should be learning positive attributes in schools, such as team spirit, adversity quotient, and critical thinking. Moreover, students should also be acquiring these qualities through real-life experiences. Sailing covers

these qualities since it is not only about tackling uncertainties on the sea but also understanding the dramatically changing weather conditions. Young sailors get trained to overcome all kinds of difficulties through HHYC’s Scallywag Programme. In return, their self-confidence and abilities are boosted, so they are able to face future hardships in life. Assistant Principal Mr Lee added that this programme offers extra authentic English exposure to students i n t h e s c h o o l . D u e t o t h e l a rg e p e rc e n t a g e o f English-speaking members and sailing lovers here at HHYC, the Club provides a very good platform for students to communicate and interact with each other in English, as well as enhancing students’ selfconfidence. The programme received overwhelming feedback when it was first launched—those who wanted to enrol needed to be interviewed. The foremost criterion to determine whether a particular student could ‘get admitted’ was their reason for joining. Next, would be their physical fitness, since sailing demands quite a lot of physical strength. Last, but certainly not least, it would be ideal if students had joined sailing taster courses prior to joining the programme.

The mission and aims of this programme is to provide under-represented youth in Hong Kong with proper sail training, a path to sailing certification and mentorship for personal development, Sun Hung Kai & Co. Foundation has partnered with Hebe Haven Yacht Club (HHYC) and worked closely to help more students benefit from the programmes that they have been offering all these years. On a glorious day, with autumn breeze, nine students accompanied by the Principal, Assistant Principal, together with two teachers from ECF Saint Too Canaan College, were the first local school children in Hong Kong to kick off their Hong Kong Sailing Federation Level 1 and 2 certification programmes upon their arrival at HHYC.

Students concentrating in their theory lesson prior to sailing on the water

We, the HHYC, were represented by Michael Turner, Paul Duncan, Barry Cronin, Ian McGovern and the undersigned. The format was based on Stableford points on a corrected handicap. After a thrilling and very enjoyable round, we gathered for lunch only to be surprised by receiving the FIRST PRIZE TROPHY! After a brief celebration, we returned in great spirits, carrying the Commodore’s Cup home!

As we start a new year for the HHYC committees, I would like to invite members to join the SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE. No need for experience, you just need to be enthusiastic about improving things at our club.

We would love to revive the Hebe Haven Golfing Society, so we can participate in the various interclub golf events. Any interested members please contact the undersigned (gm@hhyc.org.hk) or Michael Turner.

In October we had our Annual Clean Pak Sha Wan Day. Sadly, due to the transport problems, many people were unable to attend. This year 50 volunteers cleaned up three beaches in the bay and did an amazing job. A big thank you to everyone.

The most significant matter to report on is off the water, where the AGM confirmed my re-appointment as Rear Commodore, Sailing for the coming year. Whilst I was uncontested to continue in the role, I am very appreciative of the encouragement that both the General Committee and Sailing Committee members gave to me to carry on and I am honoured to do so. When I say 'for the coming year' that is not wholly accurate, I should really say ‘for the coming six months’ as I will leave Hong Kong (for a while) upon my retirement in April 2020.

I am very pleased to say that one brave (and keen) Sailing Committee member has stepped forward to take the baton from me and that person is Adam Glendinning. The General Committee and the Sailing Committee have endorsed the arrangement that Adam will ‘shadow’ me for the coming months, before formally assuming the role in March 2020. Tentative arrangements are in place for this to formally happen at the Sailors’ Awards Night in late March. As well as being a pilot, Adam is a keen and experienced sailor who has raced on a number of boats in HHYC events, including Outrageous and Jelik, as well as participating in offshore races. Adam has served on the Sailing Committee for over two years. More on this matter in future issues of Hebe Jebes. The AGM also confirmed Harvey Jessop to take up the newly resurrected role of Rear Commodore, Sail Training to oversee dinghy sailing activities. Whilst sail training has notionally been part of the ambit of the Rear Commodore Sailing, it is a hugely important part of the Club and I, for one, have not had the time to contribute towards this aspect effectively. Harvey has been very active over recent years in supporting sail-training activities, including most recently as Chairman of the Sail Training Committee, so is well-deserving of this new Flag Officer position. Congratulations to Harvey. By the time you read this, you will, hopefully, have attended and enjoyed the two on-the-water cruising/social events organised by the Sailing Centre over the Christmas/New Year period: the Boxing Day Treasure Hunt and the New Year’s Day Family Fun Day and BBQ at Hap Mun Wan Beach.

Rear Commodore—Sailing

Apart from the fact that the Monsoon Winter Series is in full swing, after a short hiatus in early October, and that the Kowloon Cup will be held on 18 – 19 January 2020 there is little to say on the keelboat sailing front.

Which reminds me, I should end by wishing all HHYC Members all the very best for 2020. See you on the water!

CLUB UPDATES

It is a pleasure to continue my role as part of the Ops Committee for the upcoming New Year. I have drawn up the current goals set for 2020. First of all, with the continued development of vessel designs, the storage requirements and hardstand specifications will be re-examined, so as to more effectively manage boat storage and hopefully help shorten the hardstand waiting list. Another goal is to effectively clean up the shipyard and marina pontoons, and to perform various essential maintenance tasks before the typhoon season. Finally, we will further enhance marine staff training to help address safety matters and ensure improved service quality. I want to wish you all great progress in the New Year of 2020!
