REPORTS

It is very pleasing to see that our lives are starting to get back to normal with the Club becoming extremely busy. As we can see from the news in other countries, the pandemic is far from over. Nevertheless, there are recent massive increases in the cost of shipping and commodities, which represent a positive change in global demand. I can see a “bright light shining at the end of this tunnel”. But this is not a justification to relax our personal precautions and I ask all those who can do so, to please get vaccinated. We are planning many exciting sailing events, and these are discussed at length in other reports in this issue, and I have “my fingers crossed” that the pandemic allows us to carry them out.

A members' survey has been completed, and you should have seen a summary sent by email. As a high-level comment, the Club received good marks, and there were no real surprises in the list of items requiring the attention of management and the General Committee. Many of the items have solutions that depend on regulatory approvals, all of which we are working on—a close reading of the Vice Commodore’s report in each issue is very informative. You do need to keep in mind that development (regardless of size) requiring regulatory approval takes at least seven years from start to finish.

Commodore There has been improper use of the pontoons by both members and nonmembers, and management is acting to resolve this problem. For those members deprived of your entitlement of pontoon use, I ask for both your patience and your cooperation in identifying misuse or abuse of the pontoons by sending an email with supporting details to the General Manager. There are many other positive actions underway, and I urge you to read the various reports in this Hebe Jebes to stay abreast of our progress.

很高興看到我們的生活開始恢復正常,最近遊艇會的活動也開始多了起來。世界各地 的疫情尚未穩定下來, 運輸和商品的成本大幅度增加,這是全球經濟開始活躍的跡 象,可以看到局勢出現好轉。但謹記切勿鬆懈,我希望大家儘早接種疫苗。 我們正在籌劃不少精彩有趣的帆船賽事,本期會刊的相關文章將提供更詳細的資訊, 我期望疫情維持穩定,賽事才能順利開展。 關於內部事務,本會的問卷調查已經結束,會員可在郵箱閱覽本會寄出的調查結果。 整體來說,遊艇會得到良好評價,管理層和執行委員會都非常了解會員在調查裡面提 出的建議和需求,許多工程項目需得到監管部門批准後才能進行下一步的行動,會員 可從副會長在每一期的報告得知項目的最新進展。一般來說,不論是大或小的工程 項目需要獲得監管部門的批准,才能開展,從開工到竣工的過程至少需時7年。 近日發現會員和非會員都有不當使用船橋的情況,管理部門正在採取行動解決這一 問題。對於未能使用船橋的會員,若發現任何人濫用或不當使用船橋的情況,煩請電 郵告知總經理,在此感謝你們的耐心和協助。 本會還有許多其他活動項目進行中,敦促各位會員翻閱本期會刊,以便及時了解進展。

Masterplan The Access lift, new storage area for kitchen and Garden Bar Project—including FM200 removal from BD submission—draft submission is ready for review by Arup and HHYC. We may later need to install a water tank or FM200 fire-suppression system when the new Regatta Deck area is built. Knight Frank will soon submit documentation to the Town Planning Board with the required design work for a permanent concrete structure to replace the garden bar tent and later to the Lands Department regarding the lease modification. The proposed Regatta deck will be included in this submission. The operational needs of all HHYC departments who will use this multi-purpose space including the Sailing Centre (for sail training), Sailability (for disabled sailor training), F&B (for functions such as weddings, banquets, BBQs etc.), Membership (for AGMs and EGMs) have been consulted to ensure the design is fit for purpose. A total of 53 members joined the members' webinars. We have uploaded the Zoom video recordings and the PowerPoints to the HHYC website. PAUL ARKWRIGHT Vice Commodore

Marina Projects Marine pile cap fixing Six plastic protection caps have been ordered, are scheduled to arrive in mid-March, with installation scheduled to be completed by early April. Marina pile long-term replacement project To facilitate the replacement of the marina piles and ensure the pontoons' long-term stability, preparatory Ground Investigation (GI) works are required before design works. The GI tender draft document will be ready in mid of March 2021. The GI works on the seabed will tentatively commence by early June, subject to the tender process. Notice to members on relevant berths will be issued before this as a reminder that their vessels will be temporarily relocated during the time the GI works occur in their berth. Boatrack safety walkways Regarding the retrofit of safety walkways to the boatracks, the first BD submission was made on 11 February 2021. Following BD approval for the design, tenders will be sought for the walkway building works. Slope rectification work The Club maintenance team has made interim repairs to the crumbling slope adjacent to the club driveway ramp. We will then get an arborist and/or slope contractor to professionally survey the area and assess any remaining underlying safety issues. We are examining solutions to try and deter illegal parking in the area of land at the top of the slope (adjacent to Hiram's Highway, which sits between the pavement and the Club driverway). If this issue is resolved, this will then afford better visibility for members driving out of the Club and turning right onto Hiram's Highway. Refurbishment of club changing rooms The Club is planning a complete refurbishment of the members' toilets and changing rooms. To facilitate this, we are making arrangements for a decent temporary toilet block with a shower to be placed in the car park to accommodate members while the existing changing rooms are being refurbished. Mobile shower and toilet block for boatyard staff We are examining options for portable toilets and showers to be placed in the boatyard, near the ramp to the pontoons, for shipyard workers and other contractors. These would feature separate sewage holding tanks underneath with a regular pump out and cleaning service to be arranged. Additionally, these sewage tanks may also be utilised to allow members to pump out their boat grey tanks.

Dear Members There is not much more to say about the Covid-19 anymore…the updates of restrictions are being forwarded to members every 14 days, and I can only encourage everybody to register for their COVID vaccinations to help get everything under control in Hong Kong. Luckily, our sailing programmes and regattas have not been affected that much. It was good to see so many people, especially kids, out on the water having a good time!

There has been an increasing number of ‘no-shows’ on the restaurant terrace during weekends after members had made reservations, which means we end up with empty tables. Hong Kong National Match Racing Championships Day 1 2021 全港對抗賽錦標賽 ( 第 1 日賽況 ) Over the weekend of the 3 and 4 April 2021, HHYC, in conjunction with the Hong Kong Sailing Federation, hosted the first Hong Kong National Match Racing Championships for several years.

As explained by Bob Vart, Assistant Race Officer for the day, match racing is by no means new to Hong Kong. He was a keen competitor in Impala match racing back in the 1980s. Also, back in 2014 and 2015, soon after the arrival in Hong Kong of a fleet of J80s, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club organised two international events, over which Race Officer of the day, Inge Strompf, also officiated.

With 10 teams entered, the first part of the event comprised a round robin, in which each team would race against each other. With six J80s available, this meant 15 flights were scheduled, each comprising three matches for a total of 45 matches. The top four teams would progress to the semi-finals, and final rounds to be held on Sunday.

The first flight lasted longer than expected, so, for the second, the windward mark was brought in to 0.35 nautical miles, shortening the match time to around 16 minutes for two laps. Considering rigging issues and the need on occasions for crews to switch boats, time was of the essence to complete the schedule.

and 265 degrees—a huge shift from their original positions. This all added to the technical challenges of the competitors and management.

Many of the sailors were a little rusty, and there were several newcomers to the match racing discipline. But it was pleasing to see the three major yacht clubs entering youth teams with HHYC represented by two teams made up of Hebe Dragons dinghy sailors. Aberdeen Boat Club and the Hong Kong Sports Institute were represented by two teams of 29er sailors and the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club by members of the Sharks, all with an experienced coach onboard. However, this again proved challenging since, for many, it was their first introduction to spinnaker poles and spinnakers. J80s typically use asymmetric kites but, to improve visibility, all boats were re-rigged for spinnakers. Occasional delays to the programme occurred when spinnaker halyards had to be retrieved from mast heads—Sam Sakai did a splendid job volunteering to retrieve them, earning himself a Race Officer’s prize.

Some skippers were less familiar with the starting procedures for match racing, perhaps having not followed the America’s Cup. On several occasions, boats failed to enter the starting box on time or from the on-course side, whilst other more wily competitors managed to prevent their opposition from entering on time, inducing penalties and, in some cases, black flag disqualifications.

Ahead lay a hectic schedule, involving eight flights of three matches each (i.e. 24 races) to complete the round robin before 1530, hopefully just enough time for a semi-final and final.

Flight 8, Match 1, between Alfred Okoth and Daniel Dolega, got underway at 1107, Match 2, between Adam Glendinning and Jono Slattery, followed five minutes later, with Glendinning being black-flagged and disqualified after three penalties, the last for being a fraction too early at the start. Duncan Gregor then took on Chan Yuk Wah (Fajai) in the final match of the first flight of the day.

Seven further flights of three matches each followed, with especially keen and competitive sailing, despite the fluky breeze, again resulting in frequent switches between the windward marks. Even with the drop in temperature to 21 degrees from 30 on Saturday and the drizzle that settled in mid-afternoon, spirits remained high.

Amongst the most exciting races were two in the final flight of the round robin – Flight 15. The first was between Andy Pidden and Duncan Gregor, both tied with seven wins apiece and both beaten only by Thornborrow. With Pidden penalised in the pre-start, Gregor managed to take the lead at the start and hold on to it to win the match. The final match in the round robin saw Daniel Dolega and his young crew, with three wins out of eight, take on Ben Gunton and his youngsters with two wins. Very close racing followed right up to the finish, thrilling the competing crews resting on the committee vessel and on the six spectator boats that ventured out to support the event. Gunton just managed to squeeze across the line to level their scores of three wins apiece.

Gender bias in sport is slowly but surely fading across the spectrum of sporting opportunities worldwide, and the confidence of women to tackle just about any sport has taken huge leaps in recent years. For today's younger generations, gender differences appear to be far less significant, and there is a distinct shift in culture toward respect for equal participation in the sporting arena. Spectators are also starting to view sport differently. It is thrilling to watch a game of women's football. Let's be honest; there do seem to be far less theatrics and drama queen moments when the girls play; it's simply entertaining sport!

Women have made their mark on the world sailing stage in impressive ways. In 1989, a sailor by the name of Tracy Edwards assembled and skippered the first-ever all-female racing team to compete in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. From all reports, this was an extremely controversial move, not only raising fierce opposition amongst race organisers but also fellow competitors. There was much scepticism about the women actually ‘surviving’ the circumnavigation! Yet not only did they survive, they won two race legs and finished in second place n their division. Tracy's boat was called Maiden, and in more recent years, she has used Maiden to spearhead a campaign designed to empower and mentor girls through education, particularly in nations where women have difficulty accessing education. Tracy founded The Maiden Factor Foundation https:// www.themaidenfactor.org/ to fund this extraordinary initiative. The 2018 film Maiden is also a very successful documentary about the ground-breaking Whitbread Round the World Race, and I am sure those who have seen it will agree that it is inspirational viewing.

The Whitbread Round the World Race subsequently evolved to become the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR), which has now morphed again to be known as The Ocean Race. In the 2014 – 2015 VOR series, Samantha Davies assembled an all-female crew on Team SCA. It had been twelve years since a woman had raced in the VOR. Sam is well known to those who keenly follow ocean racing and the Vendée Globe in particular. This solo, non-stop circumnavigation, devoid of any outside tactical assistance, has to be the most gruelling and challenging sailing race in existence, and Sam has been a multi-race competitor over many years. In 2008, she finished in 4th place on her boat Roxy. The 2020 – 2021 Vendée Globe had the greatest number of yachtswomen competing to date. Pip Hare, a British competitor, finished in 19th place out of the 33 competitors taking part in this edition. On her website, Pip stated, "More men have walked on the moon than women have completed the Vendée Globe, which is all the inspiration I needed”.

Back to the VOR, in the 2017 – 2018 edition of the race, organisers made a very bold decision for which they need a big pat on the back! They endorsed a change of rule, which made it advantageous for teams to include females. Shock! Horror! This was entertainingly controversial for a while until the dust settled, and as the race progressed, it seemed that the women were equal to the task. All boats eventually included women in their crews, and the great hope is that the precedent is now set to welcome women sailors to the event in the longer term.

One extraordinary female sailor, however, had reportedly struggled to find a place on a team and eventually assembled her own team, Turn the Tide on Plastic, which she skippered. She was also determined that her crew composition would be 50% females and sailors under 30 years old. This skipper was Dee Caffari, who is one of the most accomplished and courageous ocean sailors. She was the first female to ever sail singlehanded, non-stop around the world in both directions, and she has circumnavigated numerous times, setting speed records along the way. She has an MBE in recognition of her achievements. And still she could not secure herself a place on a VOR mixed team without forming her own team, where she set about paving the way for inclusiveness of gender and age in top-level sailing. The moral here is don't despair ladies; if it takes you a while to be accepted on a local Hong Kong team, Dee knows how it feels!

Having never stepped on a boat until she moved to New York City, as an adult, she learned to sail on New York Harbour and declared, “From the moment I first took the helm, I fell in love … I found confidence, exhilaration and freedom in the sport." To add to her accolades, she was awarded the Australian Sailor of the Year in 2018. Wendy had not taken an interest in sailing until she was in her mid-twenties but had been inspired by other yachtswomen, including Ellen MacArthur and Kay Cottee. After her Clipper success, Wendy gave an interview to London's Daily Telegraph, in which she said, "If one little girl sees this, sees it can be done and has a go, that will be what matters to me." The second-placed yacht in that race series was also skippered by a woman. Nikki Henderson, a British national, was only 24 years old upon completing the 2017 – 2018 circumnavigation. To safely skipper a powerful 70ft yacht around the world with a team of amateur sailors, racing through some of the most hostile oceans on earth is no mean feat. The only two women skippers in this race took first and second place out of twelve entrants.

All of these great women sailors have attributes in common. They have had a dream and made it happen. It started with a love for the water and the sport but took commitment, physical fitness, resilience, confidence and above all, a belief in what they had to offer. Ellen MacArthur's extraordinary story of survival and success in the 2000-2001 Vendée Globe is a riveting read in her book, Taking on the World. Just getting to the start line was a tale of survival for Ellen.

We all have a common goal to sail fast and to have fun, and along the way, we often share common colourful language!

When did you start sailing, and how did you come to know HHYC? 你從什麼時候開始航海的?你是幾時和如何得悉白沙灣遊艇會?

Since I was a kid, I have always lived close to the water; it has always been there and was with me during my all life. I thought about getting closer to sailing a long time ago back in Venice when I was having a walk; it was the perfect environment, a city born and built literally on the water and close to the open sea, with a marvellous sailing school, the city that gave her name to the Moro di Venezia, the first boat that made Italy dream in 1992 during the Louis Vuitton Cup. However, I couldn’t make that happen at that time, and I carried this deep-seated passion with me for a while. Then I came to Hong Kong, another city with unique access to water, a fantastic place for sailing with astonishing natural resources, and I decided to make this happen regardless of time-of-life constraints. That’s when I finally could get closer to the magnificence of this incredible sport and way of life. I started sailing last year, casually cruising on a Hebe boat, and after that, I was looking into sailing classes for beginners; I was very excited to start this new adventure. In no time, I came to know Hebe Haven Yacht Club and its wonderful staff. It was an astonishing experience; I am immensely grateful for all the effort and perseverance of HHYC in making sailing opportunities available for everybody in both dinghies and keelboats, giving me the chance to keep practising, improving my skills, learning more and even getting the chance to go racing very soon. It has been a wonderful beginning, and I feel like my journey has just started.

久以前,我在威尼斯散步的時候,就想過要出海。威尼斯擁 有得天獨厚的環境,誕生並建造在水上的城市,還孕育了一 個出色的帆船學校,命名為「威尼斯摩洛號」,這是1992年路 易威登杯的比賽,讓意大利奪獎的第一艘船。然而,當時的 我還沒有足夠的水平在帆船比賽奪獎,可我的內心悄悄埋下 種子,讓熱誠慢慢萌生。輾轉間我來到了香港,另一個擁有 獨特水源的城市,擁有絕佳的自然資源,實在是一個航海的 好地方。我不管生活、時間製造多少限制,我只想實現自己 的目標。那時,我終於有機會嘗試帆船運動,又或者説嘗試 另一種生活。我去年開始航海,在一艘Hebe的船上進行了一 次巡航,之後我就在考慮為初學者開設航海課程。一想到這 一點,我就難掩興奮,開始新的冒險是非常刺激的。不久,我 就認識了白沙灣遊艇會以及其員工。這是一次令人難忘的經 歷。我非常感謝遊艇會的努力和堅持,讓每個人都有機會在 小艇和龍骨船上航行;讓我有機會不斷練習,提高自己的技 能,很快就能參加比賽。這是一個美好的開始,我的航海之 旅才剛剛起步。

If I had to list one difficulty that I’ve had during my start in sailing, I would say that a major one, even though I feel I cannot really call it a ‘major’, is actually related to getting access to sailing opportunities (especially on keelboats), but as I said the journey has just started and opportunities are now coming up like bees on honey. Some people asked me what the biggest sailing challenges are as a woman, and I personally think that there are not (or there should not be) any challenges for a woman to become a sailor.

In fact, HHYC and Sailability HK are doing a marvellous job in making sailing available to everybody regardless of age, gender or ability. I really admire their passion and dedication. To push it further forward, I would probably take advantage of virtual infrastructures as information spreaders and social connectivity activators. Reaching local communities would also be an important step. If I have to think about more opportunities, supervised sailing or cruising with bigger boats could be an extra, especially during weekends or weekdays evenings. Speaking for my ‘category’, as a young professional, I am currently lucky as I can manage my time most of the time, but it would be a lot easier for many professionals to have more sailing opportunities besides or completely outside working hours. Hebe is already doing a fantastic job (among others) with Friday night J80 racing practice and the Dinghy Adults Sailing Club; what a terrific way to spend a Friday night or an entire Saturday out on the water!

事實上,白沙灣遊艇會和航能香港 這方面做得很好。我真的很佩服 他們的熱情和奉獻的精神。為了推 動這一方面的發展,我可能會利用 網絡傳播信息,連接社會。接觸當 地社區也將是一個重要的一環。如 果我有更多的機會,在週末或工作 日的晚上,在資深水手的陪同下航 行,或在更大的船巡航。說到我的 所屬組別,作為一個年輕的專業人 士,目前我還是比較幸運的,因為 我的時間比較彈性,但對於許多專 業人士來說,除了工作之外,要是 有更多的航海機會就更好了。白沙 灣遊艇會每週五晚上的J80航行練 習和成人小艇會,是多麼好的週末 活動,遊艇會在這一方面已經做得 很不錯了!

When did you start sailing, and how did you come to know HHYC? 你從什麼時候開始航海的?你是幾時和如何 得悉白沙灣遊艇會?

I completed my HKSF Level 1 & 2 Sailing courses in November 2020. I am 37 years young, and this was my first time being on any sort of sailboat, and now I love it! I heard about Hebe Haven through my research for sailing lessons. HHYC is very consistent with what it offers in its sailing courses—and indeed the whole sailing programme, plus the staff are very helpful. The whole registration process was simple and efficient, even though I am not a member of the Club, which was very welcoming and much appreciated.

If the Government could support some programmes for children from low-income families, this would help promote such sports, generate greater interest and foster more talent to come up in water-based sports. You never know; maybe the next Lee Lai-Shan is out there, but, unfortunately, they just never got the chance to get involved in the sport. Also, I think more school talks and tours about sailing and other related activities could help as well.

I don't think Asian sailors are at any disadvantage at all in terms of physical strength, fitness endurance. I think sailing is mainly about honing technique and skills; I don't even realise that it is physically demanding, because I have so much fun!

I think the biggest challenge for females, especially Asian women, is the sun! It is, for many, our culture to dislike being in the sun since we were children. However, I overcome this with a heavy sunblock, and I literally wrap up my face. At first, I was embarrassed about it but then, thanks to COVID, wrapping up your face is not so weird anymore. In fact, I actually see men wrapping up their faces from the sun as well, so it's completely ok.

In the last few weeks, Sailability has had an additional volunteer in Hong Kong from the UK, Jenny Tsang. Jenny, a British Born Chinese, has been helping out Sailability during COVID. Andrew Sheard, Club Member and Sailability Volunteer, spoke to Jenny to get her take on what brought her to Hong Kong and how she’s finding help out at Sailability.

Hi Jenny, you’re from the UK, so how come you’re in Hong Kong at the moment?

I have family in Hong Kong, and as there are currently fewer restrictions here than in the UK, I have decided to stay a little longer— being able to go out, meet friends and enjoy yum cha with my family.

Who do you sail with in the UK? 在英國的時候,你會和誰一起航海?

In Spring 2015, I started volunteering for Horizons Plymouth, a sailing charity. I already had plenty of experience working with children with special needs, but sailing was like learning a whole new language! Having worked with children throughout my life, I really enjoy being able to continue enhancing their lives through such a different activity. I have seen, on many occasions, how this activity can change a child’s personal growth and development for the better.

The most significant difference is the tides. In Plymouth, the tidal ranges are far greater—there can be up to 6m between high and low water, and the tides are also much stronger. Naturally, the weather conditions are also very different; Plymouth is often wet and very windy with much lower air and sea temperatures. We also have the added obstacles of Plymouth being a naval and commercial port. So, we have to keep watch for all the shipping traffic and keep the children and their dinghies out the way of the cross-channel ferries, commercial vessels, naval ships and nuclear submarines!

What are your impressions of Sailability Hong Kong? 你對航能香港的印象如何?

It’s been wonderful being able to volunteer for Sailability Hong Kong. It’s an incredibly friendly and welcoming group where everyone pitches in and gets involved. The sailing is very different because of the boats used. Sailability uses a range of boats that are accessible for all, including the Hansa 303 and International 2.4mR. Whereas Horizons Plymouth uses Hawk 20s (2 adults + 6 children), a range of Laser dinghies (Pico, Vago, Bahia), and RS boats (Feva, Cat 16, Aero Foiling). The charity also has a Mitchell 31— Friendship of Plymouth—a purpose-built workboat specially fitted out to carry wheelchair users.

I have been in love with the water since I was a small boy. When I was able to read, I read books about sea adventures. (Authors Douglas Reeman and Joseph Conrad were favourites). I was raised near the English Lake District, and when my parents bought a 27-foot boat (8.23m), even though neither could swim, a sailor was born.

There was no looking back; I went to sea aged 16 and travelled around the world on general cargo ships. This type of ship generally spent two weeks in port to discharge or load any cargo, unlike the modern ships, which barely touch the quayside before leaving for another voyage. The time in port allowed me to experience the delights of different cultures, the ones I had read about as a small boy. I had circumnavigated the world twice before I was 18 years old.

I have steamed across the Indian Ocean, at night not a single cloud, just the sound of our engine and its vibration under our feet and the firmament of stars from horizon to horizon and bioluminescence glowing green in the sea which 'sizzled' as we moved through it. I have been surrounded by dolphins off the coast of West Africa. There are many highlights.

There have been storms too. Passing through the centre of a Hurricane in the Pacific Ocean in which we almost became overwhelmed was a memorable one, as were three or four other occasions where the wind maintained a speed in excess of 110 knots.

The clients, sailors—or however you want to label our friends—gave friendship, fun, comradeship and laughter. I honestly did not expect that. I think the modern term is 'feedback'; well, at times, it was overwhelming.

As I have said, I have met, talked to and worked with people from all over the world. It is the same at Sailability the range of nationalities is almost beyond belief, a United Nations of people with one goal, to share our knowledge, enable people, and have fun. Maybe governments around the world should study Sailability to see how it is done.

I have been sailing in Hebe for four years; I have learned many sailing skills during these four years. Thank you Alfred and Antonio, for coaching me. There have been many difficulties during COVID-19. First of all, the training was cancelled, and most of the sailing regattas also got postponed. My goal for this year is to qualify for the Gold Fleet in the Laser 4.7s World Championships 2021. Overall, I have had a really great experience at Hebe.

I am very honoured to be named the 2020 HHYC Volunteer of the Year. I've been an HHYC volunteer for many years, especially for the 24 Hour Dinghy Race, on committee boats and SailCom. Last year was the toughest ones, of course, and we met several challenges trying to get boats out racing. It seemed either social distancing or Mother Nature had it in for us, but still, we managed 20 races out of the usual 40 or so.

I was so surprised to be nominated as the CCF Sailor of the year 2020! First of all, I would like to thank CCF and HHYC for the support and guidance in all the training sessions and competitions over the years. I have been sailing for seven years, both as a crew member and an individual sailor—as I can sail in races all by myself now! Other than skills in sailing, encouragement given by my teammates is also an important motivator. They shared their experience and techniques with me so that I could make improvements in every dinghy race. Our Sunshine Crew team is just like a family supporting each other. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the Club was unable to hold as many practice sessions and competitions as usual. But despite this, I enjoyed and cherished each and every time I sailed on the sea. At the age of 15, I started my sailing career with Sailability HK under the Scallywag Programme. After a year with the group, I was invited by the Hebe Dragon’s Head Coach, Alfred, to try out the Lasers and join the Fleet. It was an honour to join when I had so little experience at that time.

I started sailing at Hebe in a Pico when I was seven. After a few months, Rob suggested I try Optimists, and Clement was my instructor. Suddenly, I got super keen over the winter and started training a lot and even loved it in the cold and windy weather.

Being awarded this title was something unimaginable beforehand, as I might just be the sailor with the least experience among the Laser Fleet, but still, I am the oldest among the sailors. I was delighted to be trusted by coaches to award me with this title.

And he is the one giving me the chance to enter the competitive sailing world. Back to sailing, and this year was quite tough as—due to the pandemic—we couldn’t have regular training for a few months. Still, the team kept strong; and we met up together to do fitness training like cycling and jogging, also did some yacht sailing to keep the team together and keep up our level of sailing.

五分鐘 ... 和你談一談 You have been with the Club since 2004; what made you first want to work here? 您是2004年開始到遊艇會工作,到現在已經16年了,當初為什麼選擇白沙灣遊艇會呢?

Going back in time, I liked to study electronic engineering and loved assembling different components for radios and other electronics. Later in life, I started my first job in merchant seaman; I also tried a few new things, acquired a maritime licence, and seagoing for several years. Then I was posted to the Royal Navy base during colonial times and became involved in the operation of ships' electronic equipment. In retrospect, my career path seems to have had a lot to do with water, and I ended up working in the Club for more than 16 years.

自小就喜歡研究電子工程的東西, 組裝不同零件。18歲進入社會後, 除了從事和商船海員有關的工作, 又嘗試新事物,考獲航海牌照後出 海行船幾年;其後又到軍部(回歸 前的皇家海軍基地),參與操作船 艦電子設備的工作。回想起來,我 的職業道路彷彿和「水」有不解之 緣,之後我就到遊艇會工作,一待 就待了16年多。

What's your daily work routine?

能否分享一下日常的工作流程,例如平時每天的工作大概是什麼?

Our regular work includes water and electricity maintenance of the Club and the Restaurant; the repair of machinery and electrical equipment onboard club boats, as well as mooring facilities. We are pretty much continually welding, cutting, lifting, painting or installing something around the Club. We ensure new colleagues have already acquired these skills when they apply for a position at the Club. This means, with their related experience, they are already up to speed when they join and can help contribute their skills when we handle different challenging projects.

恆常的工作包括會所、餐廳的 水電維修;船上機器和電器的 維修和保養、還有碼頭設施, 每天要做大大小小的焊接、切 割、吊重、塗 漆和安裝部件等 工作。一般同事在入職已具備 以上的基本技能和知識,之後 便能和團隊靈活合作,遇到不 同項目的時候每個人都能發揮 所長、分享個人見解。


During the past 16 years, what have been your fondest memories? 在這16年的工作經驗當中,有沒有一些難忘的回憶能分享一下呢?

During peak racing season, the Club organises various races and events such as the 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race, and our department will conduct a complete inspection of all equipment and facilities one month before each event to ensure that all equipment is in place and is in good working order two weeks before the big day. In the summertime, the Club's schedule is packed with all kinds of water activities and races; you can imagine this is both mentally and physically challenging as we work under the blazing sun.

逢遊艇會的賽季、活動盛 事,例如24小時慈善小艇 賽,我們的部門須在活動 舉 辦 一 個月前完成 所有 設備、設 施的檢查,活動 前兩個星期就要確保所 有設備到位、可用。遊 艇 會不少重大活動集中在夏 季,在烈日當空下工作又 是另一重考驗,對體能、 耐性的考驗可想而知。

If a young talent would like to become an apprentice shipwright, what advice would you give? What kind of person is suitable for this job? 如果您身邊有一個年輕人想做遊艇維修學徒,您會給什麼建議呢?什麼樣的人會比較適合進這一個行業?

Young people who want to enter the industry need firstly to acquire fundamental knowledge of mechanical engineering and electromechanical technology. After they take up the job, this will be supplemented with internal training, and they can partner with senior technicians to carry out their first projects. Generally speaking, the focus will be on the technical side in the first few years of the job. After the apprentice becomes more familiar with different aspects of the job, they can gradually transition into project management—an essential role in planning, monitoring, and controlling entire projects.

想入行的年輕人需要具備基本的機械工

Also, since the indoor workspace is relatively small, most maintenance projects are carried out outdoors, and we spend a lot of time under the elements. So that is another thing that young people should take into consideration, apart from the working environment, they should also ensure that they are physically fit. We know it is boiling almost every day during summer here, and the repairmen need to go out there and provide support for multiple events and races— none of which is easy work. It often takes you a day or two to complete a single maintenance task.

室內的工作空間比較小,我們得長時間 待 在 室外工作。年 輕 人若是喜 歡 戶外 的工作環境,又有一定的體能基礎,就 比 較 適 合 這份工作。尤 其 是 夏季 的酷 熱 天 氣 下,在 室 外埋首 工作 不是 一 件 容易的事,少一點耐性也不行。因為維 護、保 養 的工作 不是 一 時半會就 能 結 束,有時候一出去就一整天在機器、部 件裡埋頭苦幹。

What are your plans after retirement? 在退休後,有什麼計劃呢?

I think I will take some well-earned time off; it has been a wonderful journey for me here. I want to thank all the colleagues and friends for their support and help over the years. In my leisure time, I might go hiking with friends and family on weekends and participate in volunteer activities too!

It was the second race of the HHYC monsoon series, and the wind was blowing good enough to even clear the stains off Outrageous, the notorious boat with the hull cleaner than its topsides! The Committee boat was standing fast on its anchors as the marks were laid out for the first race, and Captain Rob brought his crew to orders.

"First things first, you lot," said Captain Rob, with his orders book slung like a cutlass around his neck. "Don't miss a trick with these pesky race boats; they never start a clean race, just like those young pirates on the Optimist fleet… cheats the lot of them."

Tia corrected him again, shaking her head, "That's Broken Back Bob and The Pink Pirates," she said, "And they don't have a secret engine, since that would have been discovered by ‘countdown Andy’ … and that would mean cheating in the Xtreme, which is exactly what the boat is called, not Ex Cream." Andy nodded, his hat slipping off his very shiny head revealing the numbers, three, two, one, just in case he needed reminding…

BROKEN BACK BOB AND THE PINK PIRATES

JeDai turned through the race line start, nearly hitting Pepper and Salt, who almost knocked the salt bowl off the dinner table of Hebe One, as her wake struck the bow of the big catamaran. The big boats steamed through with their professional crews all tight-lipped and dressed like Hollywood mannequins, even the New Zealand crews! Ricochet, with an all-girl crew, wafted Channel Number 5 downwind to Intrigue, who promptly did a big circle and had to restart, holding their noses and pointing in the direction of the last boat, approaching the start line. Captain Rob and the scribes, oh and Tia, all looked aft. With full sail flying, spinnaker already on the deck … crews all symmetrical on the weather rail and bare toes getting cleaned by sea spray, it was Extreme … or to be precise … Xtreme. And on the helm, resplendent in his black corset belt and pink shirt, was Broken Back Bob and yes, together with all his Pink Pirates. Captain Rob shook his head and yelled, "Clean Startttttttt!" Max, Phil and Dave started scribing and doing some pretty interesting science stuff with the race mathematician, Lanky Leon (otherwise known as Algi since he could only speak in algorithms). "Mikey," Rob said to the Coxswain, whose real name was My Kee, on account of having the ONLY key to start Hebe One and open the cold drinks locker, "Mikey, drop the flags..." Just then, Tia looked again at Xtreme as she caught up with Outrageous and shouted at Captain Rob, "Look, look, that's no Jolly Roger on Broken Bob's boat." All the crew of Hebe One and Intrigue's crew, still holding their noses, looked aghast at Xtreme. Flying off the top of the mast was certainly a flag of sorts but definitely not the Jolly Roger. "I told you there might be a surprise in store for that sneaky crew,' said Rob, for fluttering from the masthead was a pair of Bob's giant unwashed underpants. No wonder, Intrigue held their noses, thought Tia. Andy blushed; he thought they might have been his. The scribes all marked for the record, "Clean pants required next race for Xtreme," and Rob cracked a very satisfying cold beer. Revenge, he thought, is all in the surprise.

In the year 1177 BC, Hercules, the hero of the strong and the brave, stood atop Mount Taygetus in Greece overlooking the magnificent Aegean Sea. There appeared the beautiful goddess of the sea, Salacia, smiling and basking in the warmth of her marriage to Neptune. Against the backdrop of the battle-weary soldiers on chariots from the Trojan War, Hercules confided to Salacia that one day the recipe of Ambrosia—a food of the gods which, according to Greek mythology, would bring immortality—must be retrieved from a place somewhere in the Far East known as Hebe Haven. If not, there would be an avalanche of unmeasurable proportions. The carefully chopped chicken pieces were placed back almost to their original avian owner’s positions on a clean, white, square plate engraved with tropical leaves. With a shiny and custardcoloured skin, the chicken embraced by green vegetables seemed there to be admired rather than eaten. Next to this display of artwork, was a rectangular sauce dish with three compartments for three different kinds of delicious sauces. “This is going to be my day,” I said to myself. I recall the farm on which I had stayed where I found free-range chickens taking their stroll between two rows of trees. From sunrise ‘til night, the change of temperature and natural lighting are governed by the superpowers, but it is your own choice as to how to tingle your tastebuds as you decide which of the three condiments you’d like to dip your Hainan chicken into.

After the first bite of the most tender piece of chicken I’d ever had, my tongue was unwilling to let go the jade-like chicken skin, I wanted time to be frozen. It was at that moment that my heart was smiling and my mouth already salivating for the next bite. Salacia would have sent a message to Hercules that he should skip Kolokithokeftedes (Greek zucchini fritters) for a day and come to HHYC for lunch instead. While my hunger quickly whisked away some of the chicken pieces, this revealed carrots, cucumber and turnip nestling under the chicken, a vegetable melody that minded me of a musical keyboard. Beethoven came and played Symphony No. 9 so there was music at the beach, where any proud sailor would be tempted to show off his or her trimmed body. Meanwhile, in my mind, the dipping of the chicken into the different sauces became synchronised with this orchestrated symphony.

The pure white rice was scooped to a bowl where I sensed beautiful island girls having sprinkled coconut water thereon. The pork bone soup containing snow fungus must have been the workmanship of a retired skipper because there were two colourful melons like Hawaiian molten lava floating on the surface, and a sponge like piece of snow fungus akin to a jellyfish hidden near the seabed. The more I indulged in my Hainan Chicken Rice combo, the more I began to hallucinate: a catamaran became the chicken, the sand on the beach became the rice, and Hebe Haven became the soup.

Moh Lee Twee, who operated a restaurant by the name of Swee Kee, would have been proud that, after he popularised Hainan Chicken Rice in Singapore, the magical dish had become a national dish of Singapore. In Hong Kong, it is our Chef de Cuisine, Eric, who has perfected the Hainan Chicken Rice to the level where it would delight even Hercules and Salacia.

Freud also came to HHYC that afternoon, to help heal my hallucinations. He placed me in a hypnotic state and psychoanalysed me. I revealed to him what had happened one day when my professor came into our Psychology 101 class. The professor said he was going to put us under hypnosis. He mumbled something, I took to be a prayer of some sort, and asked us if were feeling anything. It was a big class with about 200 of us sat in the lecture theatre. All of us kept quiet and closed our eyes, pretending that the Professor had done his magic, and we all ended up getting good grades at the end of the term.

The truth is that in the 1600s, King Charles I loved eating pies. One day, Queen Henrietta Maria introduced the King to a court dwarf. It was claimed that the Professor liked the name so much, he asked for the dessert each day during his stay at the hotel by that name.

It is the fusion of the crumbling pie crust, the gently stewed apple, and the melting alpine ice cream which created the avalanche at HHYC that Hercules had rightly predicted. Tiny blueberries revealed deep within the layers of fruity apple were engulfed by the thunderous rolling ice cream in the jaw of avalanche. In the midst of another hypnotic state of mind, and whilst Salacia, the Goddess of the Sea, was still looking for a space at our beloved yacht club to moor her sea chariot, I found sun-soaked blueberries rolling out from the avalanche onto a Mars-like plateau scattered with strawberry rocks and tiny chocolate ponds. No one came walking out from my pie; so King Charles might have been disappointed, but this is the year 2021 and I certainly was not.

Lunch wouldn`t have been complete without a good shot of great Italian Espresso. Thanks so much to Luigi Bezzera from Milan who created the spirit-lifting Espresso in 1901. With the words, “Bene, bene” in my ear, I finally came round from my hypnosis and headed home with a little sense of guilt. Please don`t tell my other half what I had, because she is going to tell my cardiologist, and my cardiologist is going to tell my mum. Forget about the cholesterol and the triglycerides or whatever, try intermittent fasting afterwards if you have to, it`s worth it. Don’t let me see you pushing aside the chicken skin, and don’t let me see you skipping the vanilla ice cream, life wouldn’t be that fun without them. If you want to try what I had, no worries, the original recipe is still here, Chef Eric secretly hid it behind our bar, but, beware of the avalanche!

Club History 遊艇會歷史足跡 by Mark Ashton, Club Historian (2021– ) The idea of a Club Historian was brought to my attention during an online search for descriptions of the roles and duties of club officers and committee members. That piece of research was rewarding because many other yacht clubs had given thought to what they expected from their committee members and had posted these descriptions online for the benefit of other clubs.

This particular role, Club Historian, had traditionally been placed with the Honorary General Secretary (HGS) in a manner such that it was for each elected HGS to ensure that a person was appointed and tasked to ensure that the significant milestones in the operation of the Club were archived appropriately. The value of doing this was brought home to me during a recent Zoom meeting of my UK Yacht Club (Redclyffe Yacht Club), where one of our members gave a talk about Redclyffe YC history going back to the founder member, Percy Westerman’s first visit in 1908!

While a little more recent, our own history is no less interesting as anyone who has read our fantastic 50th Anniversary Book will know. Fortunately, at Hebe, we have the unique benefit of still being able to talk to members who were involved with the development of the Club through the ’70s to today, and many of our members keep copies of old Hebe Jebes or the minutes of subcommittee meetings, where the evolution of much of our club planning takes place. We are also fortunate in that the work led by Andy Miller to producing the 50th Anniversary Book has been safeguarded by Andy and is now being digitised.

What’s next?

Reach out to members to see how many issues of Hebe Jebes pre-2013 can be located and digitised. Research the various phases of Club development through photographic and drawing records—it may surprise some members to know that we have three buried seawalls under our car park—capturing the historical footprint. Research the development of the Club’s sailing programme from the first Port Shelter Regatta in 1966. Interviews with our village neighbours to enrich the background to the Club story.

I hope to establish an online ‘deposit box’ to allow members to post relevant material. After collection and no doubt some curating, the aim is to create a history corner on our website. If anyone reading this has an interest or suggestion, please let me know, and the same goes for any collectors out there with backdated Hebe Jebes or subcommittee meeting minutes.

CLUB UPDATE

To facilitate better management of the use of our pontoons and facilities, HHYC has recruited additional staff to help reduce the incidences of non-members accessing such facilities and affecting regular use by members. We are also helping ensure that all our members are using the pontoons safely and maintaining a clean and hygienic environment. Recently, car parking labels have been issued to members for ease of identification of their vehicles. Members with vehicles registered at HHYC should apply for their car park label(s) from the Marine Office. On 13 May, the Fire Services Department and Marine Police will be conducting a joint fire drill at the Club. The drill is a regular exercise to ensure the safe operation of all fire prevention facilities. We appreciate your patience and understanding with any inconvenience caused during this essential safety exercise.

Sitting down to write this article for the current issue of Hebe Jebes, we are seeing a slow change in the weather in Hong Kong, pivoting slowly toward summer conditions. The NE monsoon has stayed with us fairly consistently throughout the winter until late April, even as the temperatures have crept up, reminding us that summer is just around the corner. The combination of warmer temperatures combined with a consistent fresh monsoon has resulted in some sublime sailing conditions. Naturally, mother nature always has surprises instore, and we’ve had to postpone several of the Monsoon Spring Series races due to lack of wind which is frustrating for the crews, and race management team, but that is sailing for you. There are a number of exciting racing events on the horizon at the club. The Monsoon Series will have wrapped up by the time you read this, but the Typhoon Series, and Summer Saturday Series are just around the corner, with both commencing in June. The Open Dinghy Regatta, one of the highlights of the year for the youth sailors takes place 22/23 May, and will once again be an extremely busy, and exciting weekend. Also taking place in May is the Women’s Sailing Festival taking place at the club from 21 – 30 May. There a number of on water, and on shore events taking place during the festival including the first Inter-club girls / women’s sailing championships. For full details on this exciting festival, visit the club website. With the summer season fast approaching, Hong Kong is getting into the best cruising weather of the year. The past year we have all added a new phrase to our general vocabulary: “staycation”. Even being on the water regularly, it is easy to forget just how fortunate to live in a place that has such excellent cruising grounds so close at hand. The waters just to the north of Sai Kung, whether it be Long Harbor, Double Haven, or so many other hidden gems offer a fantastic opportunity to get away from it all, for a day, weekend, or a week. The Sailing Office will soon be adding a cruising tab to the club website as a resource for member to access or add to. If you have a favorite cruising spot you want to share, we would love to hear from you. E-mail, your feedback to the sailing office, and if there is something you would like to see added to the website, input is always welcome.

坐下來為遊艇會雜誌寫這篇文章時,香港的天氣正在緩慢變化,夏天就快到了。東北季風貫穿 整個冬天一直持續到四月底,即使最近氣溫已經上升,提醒我們夏天即將來臨。溫暖的氣溫加 上持續不斷的季風,是航行的絕佳條件。 大自然時不時會丟一些「驚喜」給我們。前些日子我們延遲了幾場春季系列賽,因為缺少風, 隊員和賽委會都十分沮喪,但這就是航行,無法勉強。 本會即將舉行許多激動人心的比賽。當你讀到這篇文章時,季風系列已經結束了,但颱風盃帆 船系列和夏季週六系列賽即將於6月開展。

在5月22日至23日將舉行公開小帆大賽,這是年度
