REPORTS

Happy New Year everyone and I hope that 2021 will see the end of the pandemic. This issue of Hebe Jebes has inspirational stories of courage and achievement coupled with the reports of the Monsoon Winter Series 2020. In addition, there are notes from Planning and Works, Sailing and Operations—all containing interesting and useful information for you. I continue to be impressed by the quality of Hebe Jebes—a compliment to the Club’s management and the folk at Excel Media Group. And now you can help save the environment by opting to receive a soft copy of this magazine! The Annual General Meeting is behind us, and the General Committee for 2020-21 has started working on its objectives for the coming year. It is a busy agenda on all fronts and, I suspect, just a tad ambitious. An interactive webinar, to explain the Club’s development plans, is being set up by Paul Arkwright for early February and is an event which you should consider attending. Both Paul and Rene provide more detail of the webinar in their reports.

Some may be wondering about the status of the Club’s proposed new Articles of Association, the latest draft of which can be downloaded from the Club’s website. You may recall that, at a members’ forum, we explained a need to bring the Club’s Articles into line with the new Companies Ordinance (Cap. 622) which came into force on 3 March 2014. There was also a need to revise the Articles to align with the Club’s current objects and administrative practices. Because most of the changes were driven by the Companies Ordinance, we opted to seek a policy statement of support from the Home Affairs Bureau, followed by the approval of Director of Lands before conducting another members’ forum which will, no doubt, generate some more changes. The final step will be to call a Special General Meeting of members to seek your approval. After just under two years of drafting, we finally have the policy statement of support from the Home Affairs Bureau. We are now awaiting the approval of Director of Lands and hope to be able to implement the new Articles in the latter half of 2021. Take care and stay safe!

Members' webinars Happy New Year everyone, as promised at the AGM, we will be hosting two seminars (in Chinese on 3 February 2020 and again in English on 4 February 2020) to help get everyone on the same page in terms of the Masterplan. The webinars will be identical and give a quick progress update on the club Masterplan, related projects, and the chance for all members to ask questions and give suggestions as we move forward. Masterplan and lease renewal Short-term projects Following detailed survey work around the Club, we have calculated left over covered over area we have to play with (which is ~50 sqm). With the impending road widening works about to 'eat-up' part of our existing kitchen storage area, we are now determining the best option for reappropriating the kitchen storage areas in good time ahead of the road-widening works. We will also look at affording easier access to stores for the catering staff.

Longer-term projects In the longer-term, we need to regularise the Garden Bar tent and are planning to replace it with a shiny new Regatta Deck. The Deck will serve to extend the existing sundeck from outside the restaurant, all the way out to the water where the sampan steps are. It will be a simple one-storey structure, bringing a great new deck area to enjoy F&B on, and much-needed shaded and windproof space below for sail training, Sailability and prizegivings etc. This project is planned to achieve several goals while keeping expenses to a minimum: 1. 2.

Timely removal of the garden bar tent, as required by the Government. Replacement with a fully compliant permanent purpose-built structure providing a shaded windproof space below for sail training, Sailability and prizegivings etc. Creation of a substantial new Regatta Deck, on a level with the existing sundeck, for members to enjoy sundowners on looking out over the water.

Knight Frank is preparing the draft of the Supporting Planning Statement for review by Planning and Works Committee (PWC) before Christmas. This will help facilitate the modification of our lease in terms of usage and site coverage to accommodate a new Regatta Deck to replace the Garden Bar tent—which needs to be regularised.

Marine pile cap fixing Tong Kee is reviewing the demounting method of the existing HDPE on the six piles—which are the only piles now not to have the white protective caps on them—to come up with the best solution for these remaining piles. Marina pile long-term extension project (preliminary GI works) AECOM has prepared the tender documents for the sub-marine GI works and is planning to start the Ground Investigation (GI) works after CNY 2021. We aim to complete the GI works before this year's typhoon season. The works will be conducted in six phases (lasting one to two weeks each). Matt and the marine team will help plan operations to ensure a sufficiency of temporary moorings during the GI works when one boat at a time will be moved off the pontoons to allow a floating rig into each berth on the marina to drill down into the seabed for the GI works. We will give you a heads up when it's your turn, and this should mean moving your vessel for one to weeks. Boat Rack safety walkway The RSE, BuroHappold, has been appointed who will help amend the boat rack submission to add in the required safety walkway. We will then put the project out to tender, based on these RSE design drawings, and select the most suitable contractor to meet the design specifications and build the safety walkway.

Seawall repairs AECOM has submitted the BA4 documents for authorisation of the registered structural engineer (RSE) and AP, and the submission of the seawall design documents and the excavation and lateral support works (ELS) works and design works planning to the Buildings Department (BD). AECOM will put out tenders for a suitable contractor in February, and the works are planned to commence March 2021 and will take approximately three months to complete. AECOM is continuing to work with Matt to ensure that disruption to the boatyard operations is kept to

The build/works/submissions themselves are merely 'teak panelling on the deck' by comparison to the huge hidden 'keel' of work that goes into making these projects happen. A second one to Joseph Lau for his significant contribution to the Committee over the past two years and all his hard work—especially on the garden bar, fire safety and lift projects to date—who is now taking a well-earned rest.

Dear Members Firstly, my very best wishes for 2021 to all members. I am sure you’ll be pleased to close the door on the past year and move forward to an even brighter and happier year ahead. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Mr Donald Johnston and the entire General Committee with their confirmation for another term and to thank them for their support and vision during the last year. There is a lot on the programme for the coming year in terms of projects and improvements, and therefore we will be hosting two webinars, one in Cantonese and one in English on the 3 and 4 February 2021, respectively— to update all members on the ongoing projects and the Club Masterplan for the future. You can find more information on this in the Vice Commodore’s message on page 8.

New F&B Manager It gives me pleasure to introduce our newly appointed F&B Manager, Mr Billy Fung (pictured opposite) to you all. Billy is a club ‘veteran’, who has previously worked at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and the Dynasty Club for many years among many other renowned F&B venues in Hong Kong. You will see him around the clubhouse a lot, and he is looking forward to meeting you all and have a chat. At this moment, it’s difficult to say which of the traditional Chinese New Year events and celebrations will actually take place in February 2021. The Lion Dance, Boat Blessings and Burns Supper are all on the programme but subject to the ongoing restrictions as imposed by the HK Government from time to time. It’s also difficult to confirm any of the planned future sailing events and races at this moment. As usual, the Club will be closed all day on the 12 February 2021, to give all our staff a well-earned rest and time to enjoy the Chinese New Year celebrations together with their families. We strive to keep our member database up to date, and to help us please ensure that you inform the Club should you change your address, family status, mobile number or email address so we can keep you up to date with all the happenings at the Club and important member notices. The No.3 warning signal, was issued on 23 October for Typhoon Saudel, was lowered at 0910 on the next morning allowing Races 1 & 2 of the Hebe Haven Yacht Club’s Monsoon Winter Series 2020 to go ahead. Seventeen boats turned out for the start inside Port Shelter. On the committee boat, the RO, Rob Allen, briefed his team and laid anchor to the west of Shelter Island. The plan was for two geometrics lasting about an hour each for all boats. The RO obliged but first got the four IRC boats away on schedule at 1400 in 10 knots of northeasterly wind. Then came an AP flag as adjustments were made for the Sportboats who were given Course #24. This competitive class of five boats set off at 1420 but not before Howard Winn of Good Vibrations had inquired of the committee boat which start he was in. “Optimists,” quipped the RO.

It was a beautiful sunny afternoon as Hebe One dropped anchor in Port Shelter in preparation for Race 3—an island course race—of the Monsoon Winter Series 2020. With tropical cyclone Atsani steering clear of Hong Kong waters, the stage on Saturday, the 7 November, was set for reasonable sailing conditions.

Racing through the northern Kau Sai Chau Channel in the summer months is restricted by Marine Department. However, the northerly 8- to 10-knot breeze gave the Race Officer, Rob Allen, assisted by Hebe Haven Yacht Club’s Rear Commodore—Sailing, Adam Glendinning, the opportunity to set a clockwise course partly circumnavigating Kau Sai Chau Island.

The 0.3-nautical-mile start line was set slightly off centre in Port Shelter, to allow a longer beat to the club mark set due north at 0.8 nautical miles. The finish line was at Ma Tsai Pai, off the bottom of Kau Sai Chau, which allowed the crews of both Windseeker and Ichiban to head on to Causeway Bay for the Around the Island Race the following day.

First off on schedule at 1400 were the two IRC boats, with Talkinghead leading Outrageous over the line. Eight followed in the combined second start for HKPN and Sportsboats. Ricochet was the only Sportsboat participating and was shut out at the committee boat by Bits & Pieces, itself having to pause to slot in behind H3O, which crossed in the lead.

Once around the club mark, it was a broad reach across to the channel between Sharp Island and Kau Sai Chau, where the beating continued, although in more sheltered conditions. Outrageous led the fleet out of the channel, taking the green beacon to starboard, before enjoying a 2nm broad reach to the West Sea Cofferdam at High Island.

Several boats opted to sail close to the shore of Sharp Island but none closer than Ichiban, which briefly ran aground at the northern end. It managed to extricate itself and continue on but, in the meantime, was overhauled by Windseeker. At the tail end, Scrumpy still led LoTech.

Upon reaching High Island it was up with kites, still with Outrageous leading Talkinghead in IRC, and Bits & Pieces leading H3O in HKPN. It was a speedy downwind run to take Bay Island to starboard before finishing just south of the Ma Tsai Pai light. First home in IRC was Outrageous to take line and handicap honours ahead of Talkinghead. Bits & Pieces led the HKPN class across the line but dropped to 5th on handicap, with Windseeker claiming those honours ahead of Lazy Piggy and Ichiban. LoTech managed to catch Scrumpy but still finished last on handicap. The all-women team on Ricochet performed well to finish 3rd across the line from the combined fleet in the second start and claim the Sportsboat honours. While numbers were down it was not unexpected, due to the deliveries and anticipated exertions expected for Sunday’s circumnavigation of Hong Kong Island. However, those that did join had a great sail and a pleasant change of scenery. The happiest face of the day was of Hebe One’s coxswain, Mikey, on learning he only had three marks to lay – the start and finish line pins, and a windward mark. Credit to those who did participate before delivering their boats to Kellett Island. Sadly, they weren’t missing much back at the Garden Bar as, again, there was no prize-giving.

It was overcast and murky, yet there was talk ashore of Force 4 or 5 winds, blowing from the northeast. Certainly worth getting excited about as the crews gathered on the Hebe Haven Yacht Club pontoon, waiting to be ferried out to their boats. On the committee boat, Hebe One, Race Officer Rob Allen briefed his race management team and assigned the volunteers to their various tasks.

The entry list for the Monsoon Winter Series 2020 is impressive: nine boats in the IRC Division, eight in Sportsboats and 12 in HKPN. Winter Series 2020 Race 6 2020 年冬季系列賽第六場賽事 The Hebe Haven Yacht Club’s Monsoon Winter Series 2020 has attracted a fairly consistent number of boats to date. There were 17 starters for Races 1 & 2 and 17 for Races 4 & 5. Race 3 was a little disappointing with only 10 starters but this was to be expected as many participants were preparing for the Around the Island Race the following day.

Race 6 in the Series, held on the 5 December, drew an acceptable 18 boats in warm conditions, with soft afternoon light on the hills and islands along the eastern seaboard of the territory.

Race Officer Rob Allen and his team of five on the committee boat, Hebe One, arrived on station a good hour before the start. Hebe One dropped anchor west of Shelter Island and an ODM was laid for a fairly short line. A windward mark was positioned about a mile distant, off Tiu Chung Chau with the fleets expected to sail anti-clockwise around this island and Kau Sai Chau. The finish would be in the channel between Sharp Island and Kai Sai Chau.

The committee boat displayed Course #45 for everyone which, to be precise, stated Club Mark, Ma Tsai Pai (p), Bay Islet (p), Tai Tau Chau (p), Green Beacon (p), then Finish.

In the IRC fleet, Ambush was making ground with Whiskey Jack snapping at its heels. In no time at all, Drew Taylor had Ambush slipping through the back channel, past High Island Reservoir, and turning left at Yim Tin Tsai. Up with its big red kite, Ambush took line honours shortly thereafter, having covered the 15-nautical-mile course in one hour and 45 minutes. Average speed : 8.57 knots.

Our boat was led by an experienced coach, Alexandra, who treated us five students very nicely, with proper instructions at the appropriate times. Out on the Sai Kung waters, “Hey, hey, hey, hey”, Alexandra would shout out softly—that would be a time someone had just made a silly mistake which might have agitated everyone a bit (but not the coach). When I returned home, I would tell my other half how I enjoyed my training that day, and that when our coach shouted “Hey, hey, hey, hey”, it must have been the result of something flawed in the tacking or gybing, and the five of us, like ducklings, swayed from one side to the other.

If you hadn`t done much sailing before, like me, understanding the difference between tacking and gybing would not have been easy, not to mention learning a jib sheet is not a sheet of seaweed or cloth but it`s the rope attaching the front sail to the boat. On top of that, you had to pick up phrases like “Lee Ho” and “Jibe Ho”, and figure out what they meant. I had always suspected there would be some undiscovered language somewhere in this world; well here it is, right at the doorsteps of our beloved yacht club. That gave me a bad dream after the second session. Believe me, I don`t lie.

For those who don`t know, our J80 keelboats are equipped with a small outboard engine at the back, to cruise out of Port Shelter and to return to base without the sails. These tiny machines are not like those powerful ones on the safety boats that I have been driving for the club as a volunteer on race days. There is a starter cord that you need to pull hard and persistently enough to get the power on. I don`t go to the gym, so if I was assigned as helmsman, I would seek the help of my 230-pound boat mate, otherwise we would have been a sitting duck until dark outside the waters near the University of Science and Technology. I can`t blame the Impossible Burger I had during lunch before we parted for the afternoon training; it was delicious, and I almost forgot that I wasn`t eating beef at the end of the meal.

I found it tough after two sessions, because I thought I wasn`t able to catch up. A bad dream was also getting to me. I wrote to the Sailing Manager, Rob Allen, the night before the third session. On the third Sunday when I showed up, I felt miserable. I told Alexandra and my boat mates that I wanted to quit. I never knew sailing could be as difficult as writing a law exam. Then, while we were sitting around as usual waiting to be briefed by our coach and be sent out to rig our J80, there came my “cousin”. “David, don`t worry, I have confidence in you, it`s always like this in the beginning, you`ll get through with flying colours.” With those encouraging words, accompanied by a pounding heart, I went on to complete the remaining three sessions.

After I had joined the yacht club of my dreams, I would drive to the Club by myself, park my dream car, and walk to the pontoons in the southern tip of the club. Hey, you are entering the No Go Zone: these big boats belong to the big shots, someone will tap on your shoulders and whisk you away. If you are old enough to remember Miami Vice, I could imagine myself as the handsome detective “Sonny” starring Don Johnson (no spelling mistake here) living on his sailboat and chasing the bad guys on the pontoons with a toy gun. Thanks Hebe, I had this dream fulfilled as well. But what has this to do with my “cousin”? Well, in my first few months of becoming a member, I had this urge to become the Miami hero, so I would dream walk straight to the pontoons to do my stunt. But somehow someone was telepathic, the first person I came across would always be Rob Allen, our popular Sailing Manager. We would greet each other with the kindest words. We have concluded that we shared common ancestors a thousand years ago. Ready about!

The J80 training ended on the fifth Sunday with an unforgettable trip to the famous Yau Ley Seafood Restaurant somewhere far away from Port Shelter. It had taken us about two hours to get to our lunch destination. We arrived in Bond style, though not with a bowtie and in a tailored black suit. Without any gold toothed bad guy in waiting, we then tied our J80 to a 200 square foot island made with wooden planks and abandoned plastic bottles. We were then chauffeured to the restaurant by a quiet guy in a banana shaped boat. We were hungry like hounding wolves, but some of our boat mates managed to show their muscles and beautiful bodies on a very small beach next to the restaurant that I should really call it a big patch of sand, while the rest of us studied the menu under a probably typhoon-proof roof. The food finally came to our big round tables, with fresh prawns and fish still smiling at us, but we managed to close our eyes and finish them all. The fried noodles with beef and the Singaporean vermicelli were a treat. Before we parted this seemingly tiny fishing village, our PR lady, Camellia, from the yacht club`s office, put us together on a verandah filled with sunshine (didn`t we have enough of vitamin D that day?) and got our group photos taken. Peculiarly enough, she also asked us to line up one by one to have our “FBI wanted photos” taken. That didn`t happen in Miami Vice, Camellia; you got the wrong script!

Jakob Laustsen (Student of Alexandra, non-member of HHYC) I was probably expecting that most had HKSF level 1+2 and the course was a bit more advanced but still it was very ok and I learned a lot. I also had some very good days, the instructors are professional, good at explaining and very friendly. For sure I will recommend this and other courses to family and friends. HHYC is great. 我大概期望大部分學員都有HKSF級別一和級別二資歷。而且會是一個較高級的課程。 但是整體來說, 也是非常好。我在課程裏學會很多,在這 裏度過了很多開心的日子。此外,教練非常專業,講解清楚,我一定我會介紹這個課程和其他課程與家人和朋友,白沙灣遊艇會非常好!

Sailability Round-up 航能香港總結 Introduction What a year 2020 has been with so many challenges for us all to cope with. However, our sailors have really enjoyed their sailing when they were able to sail and we have received interest from many more groups, schools and NGOs who have seen or experienced the benefits of what Sailability does within the community. Roll on 2021 so that we can try and get back to some normality for everyone.

TREATS Inclusive Race Day! When the annual 24-hour Charity Dinghy Race was postponed this year TREATS, an NGO who has been sailing with us for almost eight years decided to hold an inclusive Mini Race Day which took place on 15 November 2020.

The day started off with an opening ceremony. Kris Tong the TREATS Executive Director made a welcome speech and then five VIPs including our very own Kay Rawbone and Rob Allen representing HHYC as the venue sponsor, sounded the horn to start off the race day.

There were 11 sailing on the water and five races. TREATS staff and volunteers sailed with SEN students while teachers and parents watched the racing from the safety boats.

HHYC Scallywag Foundation Open Dinghy Regatta Everyone was so excited to be able to race over weekend of 31 October and 1 November 2020, which should have been the 2020 Hebe Haven 24hr Charity Dinghy Race. With the Race cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions it was a huge disappointment to many of our sailors. So it was great to see so many boats participating and the amazing atmosphere with everyone so happy to be racing again at this event.

This event was also used as the 1st Hansa National Hong Kong event to assist the quest for the reinstatement of sailing into the Paralympics in the future.

Sailability had 24 boats in the regatta, 14 Hansa 303s, three Hansa Liberty-S, six 2.4mRs and an one RS Quest.

Well done to Chi Yeung Puk who won his Hansa Class race! FOO Yuen Wai came first in the 2.4mR Class where our Para Sailing Team were joined by two of our Volunteers. For one of the volunteers, Greg, it was his first sail in a 2.4mR and he came in 3rd. Our Para Sailors had better watch out! The Hansa Singles was won by LEUNG Yuk Chun, Sylvia and the Doubles Class by Leo & Joel from our Saturday Sailors as they continue to go from strength to strength. A great effort—well done.

Also participating were some new sailors hoping to make our Para Sailing Team in the future which is so welcoming to see – they were sailing in the Hansa 303s and did extremely well Ryan Ho with Tommy Wong—as one of the sailors who learned to sail with Sailability whilst joining our Scallywag Foundation program—came in a brilliant 3rd in the Quest. I think we also had the oldest competing sailor in the race, Mark Houghton, ex Commodore and Director of Sailability Hong Kong. That’s what Sailability is all about—we are truly inclusive!

On their first visit they met the mainstays of Sailability, Kay and Mike Rawbone and the volunteers and participants who make Sailability such an inclusive and enjoyable team to be part of.

On Leo’s first day (aged 9) Leo preferred to travel in the safety boat with his Mum Sandra , but soon after he jumped in to the sailing dinghy and has not looked back since. Now aged 17 and 20 Cole & Leo are familiar faces at Hebe Haven, through their participation in Saturday morning sailing with Sailability, and also via entering the various regattas and races organised by HHYC. Cole is now a much more independent sailor and particularly enjoys it when the wind gets up.

As well as the annual 24-Hour Charity Dinghy Race and Bart’s Bash race days Leo and Joel competed at the October 2018 Hansa World Championships in Hiroshima, Japan in the 303 double-handed dinghy Class, representing HHYC and Hong Kong, and came 25th overall in a field of 53, including a best place finish of 7th in one race. At the recent Open Dinghy Regatta at HHYC on 31 October and 1 NovemberLeo and Joel placed first in the Hansa 303 class. If selected Leo and Joel are looking forward to participating in the next Hansa World Championships in Palermo, Italy in 2021.

JCSRS Xmas Decorations

South Side Regatta: 28-29 November 2020 A big congratulations to Foo Yuen Wai and Puk Chi Yeung who came first and second in the 2.4mRs at the Southside Regatta at Middle Island. The Para Team were this year joined by Fred, a volunteer, who has become a regular Sunday volunteer and sailor with the team. Fred joined them as they sailed the boats from HHYC to ABC Middle Island for the race—a mere 5.5 hours, competed in the race with the team and then sailed back with them a few days later (6.5 hours). Fred now has the 2.4mR bug and will join the team for RHKYC’s Hong Kong Race week. The team needs to watch out—Fred is out to beat you! Here they are (right photo) receiving their winners certificates from ABC Commodore Chris Pooley and Richard Knight, Middle Island Sports and Recreation Manager Well done and a nice job all round everyone!

Quick Round-up Art Sale—Stephanie Waegemans held a sale of her artwork and it went very well albeit we had a T3 to contend with. Thank you so much Stephanie—the art work was amazing. We also took the opportunity to introduce our Sailability masks at the event, selling 100 over two days. A huge thank you to Sara Houghton and Julie Murphy for coming up with this very innovative fundraising idea. Another thank you to the additional sewing team members who came onboard to make additional masks and fulfill orders placed.

Hong Kong Society for the Blind brought their delightful clients, together with family, staff and volunteers, for a day out on the water on 22 November. As well as enjoying the sailing in our Hansa 303s they had the opportunity this time to have a more relaxing time as they journeyed outside of Hebe Haven in Hebe One. A retired Geography teacher was also on board giving some audio description to those with visual impairment as well as everyone else. Everyone was so excited by this new experience that HKSB staff are now looking to make this outing part of their monthly programme in 2021. Thank you to the staff of Hebe One for making the day special for them.

The anchorage at the Santubong river used to be the preferred anchorage for access to the Kuching riverfront before the tidal barrier was built. As we arrived it was choppy and uninviting, so we carried on to Palau Bessar which was pretty but also quite exposed. The weather was light, but with enough breeze to chop up at the peaks of the tidal streams for a while. South and west, we continued towards the border with Indonesia (Kalimantan).

Another big thunderstorm kept us busy during the day, and we made an overnight stop just off the beach at the site of “Jalan Zero” just as the storm was abating. Jalan Zero is so named because it is the starting point for the Pan-Borneo Highway, which will eventually link Sabah and Sarawak, skirting east of Brunei. Here we found a small collection of local food stalls serving fried chicken and delicious frozen coconut shakes.

At the Jalan Zero anchorage, we were serenaded by suspiciously rich birdsong, and so we hiked down the jungle backed beach to investigate. Here we found an odd three-story building hidden in the trees, with only narrow letterboxlike slots in its façade. This turned out to be a house built to attract swallows, allowing their nests to be harvested, and the birdsong was emanating from loudspeakers on the house—mystery solved!

Our route from the border offered a potential overnight stop on the island of Serasan (who could resist an anchorage called Klappers Hook?) followed by a day-night-day passage to the eastern islands of the Anambas Group. The Anambas Archipelago is dotted with small islands presenting many to choose from. That decision could be made once we arrived.

Our passage started with a light breeze which dropped, and we covered at least half the distance under the engine on a completely calm sea. Calm but not free from plastic, and despite care, we ended up having to clear entangled props. On one occasion, no sooner had I jumped into the water, a shark passed close by. My first impression was that this shark, about ten-foot-long, was very skinny and pale. It was almost nurse sharklike in its appearance, but we were in deep water and far from reefs. In any case, it looked hungry to me and happily, the debris around the props was quick to clear!

We had been surprised at the density of fishing in the South China Sea since our departure from Hong Kong, and it is fair to say that at night we were never out of sight of the lights of fishing boats—every night for the whole journey. One wonders how the system is surviving and whether our skinny shark was an omen.

Arriving at the Anambas, or rather waiting for them to float towards us—as it felt from our perspective, we had to choose our landing spot and we opted for Pedajul or ‘Moonrock Bay’ as it had been dubbed. We found a series of cruising notes online and very helpful they were too in the absence of a sailing pilot, including the tip that Navionics and Blue Chart were of only very limited use in these waters. The notes advised creating CAP files of Google Earth images for interfacing with GPS navigation. Due to the water clarity and typically very shallow or very deep nature of the seabed, the colour in the photographs told you all you needed to know. We were soon very glad to have been prepared for this.

Moonrock Bay was magical with reefs to snorkel and sandbanks on which to anchor. It certainly broke the spell of almost perpetually moving on. There is very little in the way of habitation on many of these islands, but small fishing boats were frequent visitors, the fishermen walking over the reef, spearing small squirrelfish and prising clams. We spoke to one boat and saw the very finely carved dugout they used, paddling kayak style. In the hot sun, these fishermen could be seen in ragged clothes, lying over the canoes with their faces in the water, scouring for edible life.

On an adjacent islet, we met a foreign couple with two young children, living in a smart new platform type open hut with elevated eaves, Thai style. They were cultivating taro, papaya and others. They had conceived the idea of a Survivor-type retreat complete with solar stills and occasional speedboat runs to the nearby market at Terempa. Their complaining at the locals, for destroying the reef and overfishing, (thus jeopardising its tourist appeal) shows the conundrum faced by poor fisherfolk, all the more unnecessary in a country with considerable oil wealth for a minority.

After a few days in Moonrock Bay, we made our way west, through the north limb of the channel between P. Siantan and P. Mataka and into the deep north-facing bay, to check in at Terampa the capital. In making the passage, it was clear that our mode of navigation had changed. From an almost complete reliance on GPS and electronic charts, we now switched to careful pilotage using a combination of satellite images, the depth gauge and our own sense of the colours of the water. The local fishing boats were also very helpful in the channel between the islands, pointing the way to deeper water.

We arrived in Terampa on a Friday and late at that, but just made Immigration who were kind enough to stay and check us in. The process also requires visits to Customs, Jabatan Laut and Port Health but we were advised to return on Monday for these and so made our way to the north west of P. Matak to another idyllic anchorage at P. Tenggeling where we whiled away the weekend snorkelling in the crystal clear water and paddling the pretty coastline.

Returning to Terempa, we completed our check in, which was trouble free. We had attempted to register our boat on the Government website before leaving Sarawak but couldn’t get the page to load properly and understand that the good idea of online registration is still suffering what are euphemistically called IT issues. The helpful clerk struggled with the system for an hour or so. As with our experience in Malaysia, we found the officials, mostly young people, to be friendly and helpful.

Setting off again from Terempa we went north again, overnighting at Semut North before visiting the Panjallin’s Besar—big and Kecil—small, although in this case not much between big and small. Remote, uninhabited and pretty below the waterline. Being able to see the bottom in 70 feet of water was a highlight of the Anambas, and we snorkelled daily. At one anchorage, Bridget dropped her GoPro camera which duly wriggled under a coral, to be lost from sight. We made three, hour-long searches before were to find the camera, but no doubt the endless distractions of the underwater scenery played a part.

We found the water to be safe, but at Panjallin Kecil, I swam through a swarm of small brown jellyfish, no larger than cockroaches, whose body shape they resembled. I didn’t feel it at the time, but an hour later I was covered in itchy red bumps which lasted a few days. We had noticed these swarms occasionally and wondered what they were, so now we knew!

Further south at Pedjaul, we saw a family house with people harvesting coconuts and fishing. A girl with two unmatched flip flops confirmed the urban myth that these things are always lost in singles or at least drift apart, hence the impossibility of finding a pair. This prompted a forage into our lockers to find a collection of cooking utensils that we were looking to rehome. We spent an amusing half hour trying to give them away to the householders. The girl wouldn’t take them but happily jumped into our dinghy to direct us to mum and dad on a nearby islet who did.

Checking out at Terempa, we couldn’t but notice what we had overlooked on arrival, which was that we were in the holy month of Ramadan. The mosques competed discordantly, and the restaurants were closed all day but busy after sunset. Terempa is a scruffy town set in a pretty bay with steep green hillsides. Shopping for vegetables and spices in the local market was very good, and people were friendly. Beer was available at the ‘Chinese shop’—all very brown paper bag.

On the pier, a gentleman approached us to ask if we wanted diesel and brought our cans back to us in a small speedboat. The Indonesian diesel is dark and smells of coal tar, but we had no problems with it.

Our next leg, to Johor in Peninsular Malaysia, was looming and so we checked out, visiting the island of Jemaja afterwards en route to Malaysia. Jemaja has a pretty coastline and a large sandy bay Teluk Mampo for the SW or transition season on its northeast side. We hiked into the middle of the island to the site of a school which acts as the free Wi-Fi site for this area and found a crowd of locals and some cruisers chatting and downloading. As we hiked back with the crew of a French yacht, a motorbike with a mother and three girls all dressed in beautiful pink dresses caught our attention. To our surprise, the bike stopped, and the driver asked could she took a photo of us! It was a happy exchange of photos and a nice chat with this lady who expressed the hope that the Government would open up Jemaja to tourism.

The passage from Jemaja to Johor meant joining the river of shipping that transits from China around Singapore before heading north west to Africa and Europe via the Malacca Straits. We were pleased to have made the outlay for a Class B AIS transponder having been in ‘listen-only’ mode for some years with a low-cost model. It was soon clear that the shipping fleet was driving around us, as we ‘ducks’ made our way sedately down the motorway, listening to the ship’s officers keeping each other apprised of their intentions via the VHF.

Around the cape of E Johor - T. Keloc, we had our calculations wrong and felt the squeeze of the adverse stream and motored hard for several hours towards Pengheli into the bowels of a growing thundercloud. Fortunately, we remained on the edge of the storm, and the tide eventually slackened for the push up to Sebana Cove. Along the edge of the shipping lanes, small open Malay fishing boats with throaty sounding two-stroke outboards darted in and out of the big ships’ paths as they flung their traps and nets. Working our way east of the new reclamation of Tekong (Singapore) we felt like ants amongst the giant anchored oil rigs, service vessels on the left and reclamation projects on the right. Via telephone, we made contact with a fuel barge on the creek leading to Sebana Cove and stopped to top up our tanks. Even with our appetite for eking the miles out of the light airs, we had burnt 390 hours of engine time in the three-month passage and nearly all of that south of the Balabac Strait.

The Sungai (River) Santi, leading to Sebana Cove Marina was tranquil, but from inside the marina, a faint roar could be heard. This was much more obvious in the silence of the night and accompanied by a massive orange glow. It was the flare of a new refinery and one that seemed to be showing off the power it had to burn. A slight buttery fragrance gave away the vast oil palm plantations which surrounded the area, a veritable powerhouse. Our trip along the east Johor coast had been strangely unsettling with the coast dominated by huge rigs and floating oil paraphernalia on the seaward side and equally forbidding oil refineries and reclamations from the shore. The scale of these things seemed inhuman, in fact, there was precious little to suggest the everyday life of humans, washing, cooking and living until with some relief we reached the relative tranquillity and naturalness of Pengelhi.

From Sebana Cove we located car hire and laundry at the village of Seri Manjung. Later we drove back to visit the East Coast of the Peninsula and saw the few surviving fishing hamlets now hemmed in by the reclamation and development, their fishing boats and Chinese temples still indicating the old way of life.

Stopping at Singapore had seemed both bothersome and expensive with European marina pricing and the promise of an indeterminate wait in the currents off the Seven Sisters for CIQ. We decided to visit instead by ferry from Belungkor, which is in fact, a pleasant anchorage which has full CIQ services and an alternative for those not needing the marina services of Sebana Cove. Belungkor seemed so near and yet so far from Singapore with its birds, monkeys and fish, whole stretches without buildings etc. Singapore is another world, western commuters on electric scooters at the Quays and a Tannoy exhorting users of the huge, covered street food market to, “Keep our street food market clean!” We enjoyed the new cool manmade rain forest and catching up with old friends from Hong Kong.

By this stage of our trip, now early May, we were keen to find a wet season resting place for Até, to allow us to go to the UK for the summer. Our enquiries at Rebak Marina in Langkawi had drawn a blank for dry storage, but we had an encouraging response from Pangkor Marina just 70 miles or so south of Penang Island. Getting the tides right, we had a memorable sail down from Pengheli and to our ‘Furthest South’ at 1.9 deg. North, rounding Raffles Lighthouse before turning northward up the Malacca Straits. The trip up the W. Coast was pretty business-like with overnight stops anchored off the small islands at Pisang, Besar and Admiral Marina near Port Dickson. We then went overnight to Pangkor, passing the intensely fished, trapped and staked banks of Angsa, off Port Klang. We kept well out, just inside the shipping lanes, but despite this, we still managed to catch some fishnet debris in the night. We decided to plug on with one engine until dawn when we could see to clear it, arriving at Pangkor at 9 am. The entrance to Pangkor is straightforward and well marked with an anchorage just outside, which would be handy for a night arrival. Our key concern with night navigation in these coastal waters is the numerous floating fish traps, and so we prefer to confine ourselves to day sailing wherever we can. We found Pangkor to be an excellent stop, a marina which understood and was geared up for cruising yachties. The low-cost car rental and flexi-hire apartment rooms, (good) bread delivery and handy chandlery were just what we needed to be comfortable whilst packing the boat away for the next seven months. The marina manager James Khoo was very knowledgeable and could help with importing parts that they didn’t stock. There were complications with our planned lift, due to a few inches lack of clearance under the nacelle of Até for the large boat transporter and since we had only launched four months prior, we decided to leave Até in a wet berth. We made arrangements for one of the marina staff to look in and keep an eye on the boat, and she was dry and fresh when we returned in December. Travel connections to and from Pangkor are either by coach, four or so hours by road to KL, or a two-hour trip to Ipoh for a connecting flight to Singapore. We opted for KL and enjoyed the coach ride with thoughts slowly turning to Hong Kong where we would be ‘boatless’ for the first time but where the schedule of regattas was already lined up. We were very much looking forward to seeing our friends and to the comforts of our apartment after three months aboard.

In the last-minute stuff, before we started our journey back to Hong Kong, I turned off the head’s seacock which seemed to come off in my hand with the tinkle of what I assumed was a locking nut landing in the bilge. I was pretty sure that I had turned the valve off, so simply placed the handle where I would see it upon return and could easily fit it on again. As it turned out, the spindle of the nearly new Groko valve had sheared off, and this was to provide a complication upon our return, but that’s a story for another day...

CLUB UPDATE

This is my first article writing to you after the Club’s AGM. I am humbled and grateful for the support of the membership to continue as your Rear Commodore—Sailing. The new Sailing Committee has been appointed, bringing a wealth of experience in big boat, dinghy and class racing, as well as cruising and race management. We look forward to serving the Club and its membership for the upcoming year. Sitting down to write this article for the latest edition of Hebe Jebes, we are back into a sporting-lockdown condition in Hong Kong. A real pity as this is traditionally the finest sailing season in the region. Notwithstanding the current lockdown, the past few weeks have seen some exceptional sailing and racing taking place at the Club. Undoubtedly the highlight of which was the 2020 Open Dinghy Regatta held the last weekend of October. Originally scheduled in the spring, the Regatta had to be postponed due to COVID-19. This year’s event was the biggest yet, with four separate racetracks in and around Outer Port Shelter and Shelter Island. Over 150 sailors took part, in 14 different classes, from the Optimist Green Fleet, to Lasers, through to foiling WASZPs. The Race Committee is grateful for all the time and effort put in by the volunteers at the event. Thanks also to the other sailing clubs: ABC and RHKYC, as well as the Hong Kong Sailing Federation for the race management support—we could not have run the event without their support. In other racing, the Monsoon Winter Series was due to be concluded by the time I wrote this article. However, the final race day has had to be postponed due to COVID-19. The Race Committee hopes to sail these final two races after the current lockdown and before the commencement of the Monsoon Spring Series. Also being affected by the current lockdown is the 2020 Optimist National Championship due to be held at HHYC on 18 – 21 December. This Regatta has been postponed, and the Club will work with the HKODA, and HKSF to find a suitable resail date. HHYC will also be holding the 2021 Match Racing Nationals from 3 – 4 April 2021. The Club’s match racing ladder is up and running where club helms can challenge for a place on the match racing ladder. The new Racing Rules of Sailing and Club Standard Sailing Instructions (SSI) will go live 1 January 2021. I am indebted to the rules working group who have put in so much effort in revising our SSI. There are a few subtle changes to the 2021 – 2024 Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) and the SSI—so be sure to check them before your next race. Although organised racing and events, as well as the Sail Training Center operations, were suspended at the time of writing due to COVID-19, the cruising grounds of Hong Kong remain as appealing and available as always. The air temperature is down, and the NE monsoon is fully established giving fantastic cruising conditions. On behalf of the Sailing Committee, I wish everyone a safe and healthy end of 2020 and let’s all look forward to a more stable 2021, with less talk of COVID-19 and more unrestricted sailing. The new Operations Committee started in November 2020, and I hope to continue the hard work to improve marine service and maintenance work. To ensure that the Marine Staff and members can clearly identify their boats, Jetskis and dinghies etc., the Marine Office has prepared boat labels for each vessel. Members who use any of the HHYC marine facilities should collect the label for their vessel(s) from the Marine Office. The Club has completed all annual inspections of fire extinguishers on site. At the same time, the crane in the shipyard has also been checked, serviced and maintained. We have also purchased new spreaders to replace the old set to ensure compliance with relevant safety standards.

Regarding applications for transfer of ownership or change of boat on HHYC facilities, the Marine Office first checks the relevant records before passing the application for final review by the Operations Committee. Please note all applications must be supported with the correct documentation including vessel ownership registration documents, valid vessel operating license, valid insurance and current ‘as is’ images of the vessel. If a company owns the vessel in question, more details may also be requested by the Marine Office to help facilitate the processing of the application. These documents must be submitted to the Marine Office on or before the first Wednesday of each month to allow time for processing in that month; otherwise, application processing will be postponed until the following month. I would also like to remind all users of mooring facilities, including the hardstand racks, that if the facilities are left idle for more than two months, except for exceptional circumstances that are pre-approved by the General Committee, under the club bylaws, HHYC will take back the facilities and reallocate them to the members on the waiting list.
