Dear Parents and Guardians As the winter nights draw in, we have started this busy term with enthusiasm and excitement filling the air. Thank you to those who joined us for our bonfire and firework display.

The girls have returned with gusto and have all approached their assessments with enthusiasm. Our annual Question Time was again a tremendous success, with panel participants eagerly preparing their topics for presentation, and then answering associated questions with maturity.

Over the last two weeks we have welcomed parents to a GCSE certificate presentation, Heathfield old girls as guest speakers and future pupils for assessment days; there has been a permanent buzz around the school. The anticipation of our annual St Nicholas’ stalls is palpable, and I very much look forward to seeing you all at what will be my first Heathfield Christmas fayre.

Our poignant Remembrance service was led by Father David and reminds us of how lucky we are and the sacrifices that so many made for us to be where we are today.

Transformation of the Sixth Form – our Giving Challenge

THANK YOU to everyone who supported this event, we raised a total of £202,421!

The 46-hour Giving Challenge was held 46 weeks before our new Sixth Form Centre is due to open, at the end of last term. With funding to build the structure secured, the Giving Challenge aimed to start to raise funds to cover the interior and fit-out, to ensure the highest educational effect for future sixth form students. Once again, thank you to you all.

Heathfield Question Time for Parliament Week

On 3 November, in celebration of UK Parliament Week, the Careers and Outreach department presented the annual Heathfield Question Time. BBC Question Time usually invites media professional and politicians to answer audience questions, but our panel was made up of our own students: Doddy and Joy in Form V and Emily and Maria in Form IV along with Mrs Millns in the chair. Students from Forms III and IV were fortunate enough to attend in the theatre and the rest of the school community watched online. We were pleased to welcome staff, parents, and local politicians. Despite the restrictions in place due to Covid, the panel, Head Girl Team and local politicians were able to enjoy the VIP supper that takes place beforehand.

The questions were submitted by the whole school, which ranged from the actions of Past Issues Translate Insulate Britain to whether Obama was a better president than Trump – the answers may have surprised many – Doddy, Emily, Joy and Maria did an excellent job of answering the questions with consideration and eloquence!

Lunchtime Music Concert - November 4 It was delightful for our girls to perform in front of a live audience again. From the intricate piano renditions of Imaan (Form V) Comptine d’un autre été by Yann Tiersen and Mima (Form II) La Chevaleresque by Burgmuller to the beautiful sentiments of Isabella (Form II) singing Over the Rainbow and Annika (Form I) singing Colours of the Wind. Flanking this was Isobel (Form IV) on flute playing Minuet in G from Bach’s Anna Magdalena Notebook.

The concert was rounded off by Form Ix with a rousing rendition of Let it Go masterfully conducted by Vi and, finally Form Iy singing Into the Unknown. What a lovely and expressive way to spend a lunchtime.

I would also like to congratulate Carina in Lower Sixth for her outstanding Grade 8 Distinction for Flute.

Lower Sixth GCSE Presentation and Parents Meeting

Parents and students of the Lower Sixth enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea last Friday to celebrate their GCSE successes. Ms Wilson emphasised the challenging work that the girls had completed and the support that they have received from teachers and parents.

The students received their certificates to much applause, followed by an overview of what they might expect over the next two years in their sixth form years.

Heathfield Bonfire Night and Fireworks

We were delighted to welcome parents, staff, and families to join students on Bonfire Night. Sparklers were distributed and everyone wrapped up warm to watch the stunning firework display.

Students enjoyed a themed supper of hot dogs and jacket potatoes with chilli before the bonfire and hot chocolate and cookies when they returned indoors. The school tuckshop opened late as an extra treat and visitors also enjoyed hot drinks and goodies from The Brew Box Berks.

Heathfield Old Girl Talk: An Art Conservator’s Journey

The Careers and Outreach department was delighted to welcome Helen de Borchgrave, on Wednesday 10 November.

As a Heathfield Old Girl, Helen started her visit with afternoon tea with the Headmistress and Head Girl Team before enjoying a tour of the school, which ended in the Chapel with a quick hunt for her name. Some students from Form IV and UVI joined Helen for a special supper. Between courses, Helen took students and guests on a journey through 1980’s Communist Poland – viewed through the lens of an Art Conservator – capturing a significant moment in history. Helen was accompanied by fellow Old Girl Sue Perkins, and Governors, Mrs Hurt and Mrs Tulk-Hart also joined us for the evening and we thank them for their support.

As well as signing copies of her book, Restoration: An Art Restorer’s Journey through Communist Poland, Helen donated a beautiful hand painted Heathfield leaver’s poster from 1962, signed by every pupil at the school, to the Heathfield Archives.

Next week, I look forward to welcoming the award-winning theatre and film director, Sean Mathias, for supper.

Parsons Paris, The New School Discuss Higher Education Options

Director of Creative Development, Mrs Feilen organised a bespoke lecture via Zoom with Parsons Paris for Art and Photography students across Forms IV –UVI. Parsons Paris has been ranked as one of the top three art colleges in the world. Parsons and Heathfield share the same multidisciplinary approach to studio practice by encouraging students to work across a variety of media and art forms.

Mike Fakih, the Senior Director of Enrolment and Admissions talked to pupils about their aspirations and outlined the wide range of courses offered. For instance, Mr Fakih gave an overview of the BFA Art, Media and Technology degree as two of our current UVI students plan to pursue animation and gaming at higher education.

It is with immense pride that recent Heathfield alumni have been accepted to Parsons Paris with scholarships to acknowledge their outstanding and innovative approach to Art & Design.

Remembrance Day

The whole School gathered outside the Chapel on Armistice Day to observe the two minutes silence to remember the fallen of over a century of wars and to pray for the blessing of justice and peace as our cherishing of their memory.

Past Issuesof poppies were placed at the Chapel memorial on behalf of staff and Translate Wreaths students past and present. Dr Snow played the Last Post as we stood in reflection and solidarity with the nation and the Commonwealth.

Original Disney Animation Slides

Upper Sixth Art students were thrilled to have the opportunity to examine the original animation slides from Bambi, Pinocchio and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Walt Disney can be credited for re-inventing animation by introducing sophisticated techniques which enforced the concept of personality in cartoon characters and making the first feature-length animation.

Dr Spear, an avid collector and enthusiast shared examples from his personal collection and discussed the analogue processes employed in animation from the early twentieth century onwards.

Two of the current Upper Sixth Art students are keen to pursue animation and gaming at higher education so the presentation was well timed as they begin to make their applications for degree courses.

An insight into Drama at Heathfield

As a Drama Scholar, I am passionate about this subject. When I joined Heathfield in Form I, my enthusiasm for Drama grew because my lessons were so much fun and they really helped to build my confidence. At a similar time, I started LAMDA Musical Theatre and that increased my love for singing.

The first Heathfield production I was a part of was The Little Mermaid in Form II, I particularly enjoyed that production because we were also involved in the technical side of the production with lighting and sound.

I was in a Concert in Form II and sang I know where I have been by Queen Latifah which was extremely nerve-wracking but a wonderful opportunity for me to help build my confidence.

Since the Giving Challenge at the end of last half-term, the site of our new Sixth Form

Subscribe CentrePast has Issues been transformed. What started as an underused patch of grass between the Translate Lower Sixth boarding area, Phoenix, and the Upper Sixth boarding area Wyatt House, is now beginning to look like a building. Foundations have been laid and the steel frame has been erected. We look forward to the next stage of the build as the contractor will proceed with the sub-structure brick and blockwork.

11+ and 13+ Assessment Days

We are so pleased to welcome almost 100 Prep girls to our Assessment Days this month; it is a real pleasure to meet them all. Girls from a wide range of Prep Schools including Coworth Flexlands, Eaton Square, Garden House, Godstowe, Kew Green, Lambrook, St George’s Windsor Castle, Thomas’s Fulham and Upton House are visiting Heathfield, hopeful of gaining a place for September 2022. We wish all the candidates the absolute best of luck.

We have returned from half-term with a bang! On Saturday 6 November we hosted St Swithun’s for a Netball and Lacrosse Festival played by all age groups from U12s - Seniors.

It was a fantastic morning of sport and all the students had big smiles on their faces!

On Monday, our U15s and U14s took on Queen Anne’s Netball teams and on Wednesday our 1st and 2nd Lacrosse teams played their second Wednesday afternoon match against St George’s.

Our U13 A - C teams have all participated in the Southeast Berkshire Netball tournament this week, and we are looking forward to taking eight of our Lacrosse teams to Claremont on Saturday 13 November. With lots more to come this half-term, I am so proud of the commitment and perseverance of our students through training and fixtures.

Weekend 6 - 7 November

It was once again a busy weekend of fun at Heathfield with many activities on offer to give students a break from assessment revision. On Saturday, there was a highly competitive Clayzer contest for Forms I-IV; well done to Liv and Millie from Form III for achieving the overall highest scores with some sharp shooting.

There was also a trip to Guildford Spectrum for ice skating where Form IV were able to show off some impressive moves. In the evening Brontë put on a movie night at school whilst Wantage visited the cinema, choosing between James Bond and The Eternals.

On Sunday, some girls signed up to visit Coral Reef water park with the highlight being the flumes. Others were brave enough to visit Go Ape high-ropes course set in the tall trees of Swinley Forest.
