WHERE IT ALL STARTED: Deck builders and product manufacturer's alike raised concerns at the 2004 DeckExpo over the compatibility of new generation wood treatments and fasteners. As a result, many realized the need for a unified industry voice. NADRA is that voice. The association is a 501(c)6 not-forprofit corporation.

OUR MISSION: The mission of the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) is to provide a unified source for the professional development, promotion, growth, and sustenance of the Deck and Railing building industry in North America so that members can exceed the expectations of their customers. In addition, NADRA strives to educate everyone in all aspects of deck safety, from consumers, to deck builders, inspectors, lumberyards, retailers, manufacturers, architects, code officials, the mass media and everyone else in our chain of commerce.

WHAT DOES NADRA DO FOR THE INDUSTRY? NADRA helps the consumer by providing information on deck safety, design, and products through www.NADRA.org, by responding to consumer inquiries, and through public relations campaigns such as its Deck Safety Month® Program, Check Your Deck® and its Deck for a Soldier® Program. These campaigns build consumer trust in this association and its members while at the same time encouraging the outdoor living lifestyle.

The Industry and NADRA must show that it cares not only about its members but also about the consumer. The consumer wants a beautiful deck that will enrich their family’s lives. They want it constructed from high quality but affordable materials. They want it installed efficiently, safely and properly.

They want it done by professional and knowledgeable builders that they trust. NADRA participates in code development to support both its supplier, inspector and deck builder members. Its efforts focus on sensible code development for consumer safety, and quality construction and materials standards.

SO WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME? If I heard it once, I heard it a hundred times, "What's in it for me?" Here is what I have to say: NADRA is what brought the whole industry into focus for me as a deck builder & entrepreneur. It gave me a glimpse of the big picture. More importantly, it has led to friendships I have made over the last 10 years that have enriched my life immeasurably.

When I joined NADRA in 2009, I had never interacted on more than a superficial level with guys that were doing the same work as I was. They were competitors.

The enemy. It was me or them. They wanted to steal my secrets and my business.

Mostly, it was fear of the unknown I guess. Through the people I met in NADRA, I came to learn that these guys, the "other deck builders", the guys I competed against, were more like me than I could ever have imagined! They were living my life -fighting the good fight everyday dealing with employees, clients, red tape, getting paid, making a profit and all while trying to have a life! They understood!! There is always plenty of work for quality guys; we can't do it all!

I would rather lose the occasional project to a friend that will buy me a beer at our next meeting, than to someone I don't know. So It was not me against them.

It is "us" standing together as an organization of colleagues and friends. This mindset has made all the difference in my business. This is why I will always be a member of NADRA!
