Anti-Trust Statement: Association activities are under the jurisdiction of federal and state antitrust laws. These laws regulate trade and commerce to prohibit unlawful restraints and to promote competition. NADRA requires that all its activities be conducted strictly in accordance with these laws. The most critical antitrust violation is the charge of price-fixing. Under the Sherman Act, members of associations are prohibited from reaching any understanding that affects the price of a product, regardless of the purpose of the understanding. For example, members should never discuss current or future prices, or what constitutes a fair profit level. However, it is permissible to discuss methods by which a company may become more profitable by acquiring better knowledge of its own costs or summarizing effective methods of marketing or purchasing. Mere Attendance at a meeting where competitors discuss their prices is sufficient to imply involvement. If such a conversation should take place during a meeting, as a NADRA member, your recourse is to stand up and attempt to stop the discussion, explain the anti-trust issue and its consequences. If the dialog persists, state your objection to the discussion and leave the room.

Code Committee Update: ASCE 7 Sub-Committee Chairman: John Kozal NEWS FLASH: NADRA’s Code Committee Persuaded a Design Standard Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) to DROP a recent 220 Point Load Proposal in ASCE 7 for Any Type of Deck Board. NADRA’s Code Committee asked certain internal members and outside Industry companies to send letters to ASCE 7 on two different occasions to stop the proposal. There was a lack of field issue proof to support the Proposal - hence the need for NADRA to act against it. Had this proposal passed, it may have possibly caused all deck board suppliers, that had no field issues at all, to unreasonably increase the cost of making their product in order to meet an unnecessary point load requirement. It is very important that NADRA leads the way in making sure that Decking and Railing Code requirements are reasonable and based on sound details.

Code Update from: NADRA’s Technical Advisor: Glenn Mathewson

Education Education Chairman: Michael Beaudry • Decks Done Right® • Deck Evaluation / Inspection Class This program has been developed for deck construction based on the entirety of the system. Code often addresses individual components and not systems. Building codes are minimum requirements. And the resistance to various forces may not be required. This manual will help you understand the following: • Know and comprehend all of the common terminology of a deck. • Understand what loads and forces need to be addressed and how to resist those loads and forces. • How to design and build to a continuous load path from the foundation to the top of the deck or porch. • Have the knowledge of how to choose and install all critical components including footings, connections, framing, flashing, guardrails, stairs and landings. • Identify options for lighting, railing and decking.

International Ambassador NADRA INTERNATIONAL AMBASSADOR BARRY JOHN DAVIS

“Answering big questions”

Asking big questions • How big is the market? • Where will its future growth come from? • How do we unlock any latent potential? • How old is the deck market (when did it all start)?

International Ambassador Over 1.8 million decks were constructed in 2019 at a consumer level value of $13.9 Billion

How big is the market?

Fasteners 5% labour/margin 31%

Framing 20%

“Over 71% of decks constructed were replacements or refurbishments”

Decking 21%

Contractor labor

Decking

$4.31 Billion

$2.92 Billion

Railing 23%

Railing $3.19 Billion

Framing $2.78 Billion

Fasteners $695 Million

• 50.2 million residential decks are currently in use. With a replacement value of $432.6 Billion.

Where will future growth come from?

• 51.4% of the decks in use are over 25 years old. • 69.5% are over 15 years old “Future market volumes will continue to come from the accelerated replacement of aged stock.” *Includes new builds and add-ons.

Framing $86.5B Railing

Fasteners $21.6B

$99.5 B Decking $90.9B

Contractor labor $134.1 B

If we only unlock access to decks over 15 and under 25 years old, we have $78.3 billion of added sales potential.

How do we unlock the latent potential? • Education, Education, Education • Introduce a system for regular deck safety inspections. • Educate existing deck builders at every level (professional & DIY). • Train new contractors to the highest level before they get bad habits. • Ensure that safety is everyone's responsibility. • Educate product suppliers and retailers on the impact of supplying & using the wrong materials. NADRA has published a range of reports by State & County showing the volume and replacement value of those decks in use.

How old is the North American deck market & how was it started? • The North American deck market is 238 years old having started on 3rd September 1783 (Treaty of Paris). • It was caused by the “Amexit vote” (identical to the UK’s Brexit vote) • which was held on 2nd July 1776 (Lee Resolution). • Vote was due to the impact of • • • • •

Taxes and laws imposed by an unelected foreign government (The European Union) Formation of a new band called ”The sons of Liberty” (we Brits had UKIP & its lead singer Nigel Farage) A bit of a party going wrong in Boston 16/12/1773 (UK referendum) A few local skirmishes with the French joining in as they did not like the British either (no change there then). Some rather more vigorous fisticuffs in Lexington, Concord, Bunker Hill, Quebec, Saratoga and of course Yorktown. (Still ongoing between the EU and UK after Brexit)

“Amazing how history repeats itself”

The conclusion must then be that….

The British created the North American Deck Market BEFORE

DURING

AFTER

Up until 1776 homes in North America only had Porches at the front of them. This was so the people could see the British coming. After 1783 when the British decided (and were greatly encouraged) that they should look elsewhere for their next holiday homes Americans could start to build decks at the back of their homes to watch the British going (later known as Decks). So…4th July 1776 is “American independence day”

Or as we Brits like to call it “Black Wednesday” but 3rd September should be “National-buy-a-Brit-a-beer-on-your-deck-day”
