2025 Rainbow Beach Sandcastle Competition is on!

GREAT NEWS - after unfortunately being postponed due to beach damage caused by good old TC Alfred, followed shortly after by the devastating loss of our beloved Chappy Ronnie - the hugely popular Rainbow Beach Sandcastle Competition will be held on Thursday 2 October during the Queensland school holidays. The beach is now looking fabulous!

This year will be the fifth annual Rainbow Beach Sandcastle Competition, with Beach & Bay Community Pantry as the event organiser with Cooloola Coastcare being the boots on the ground on the day.

Volunteers from Cooloola Coastcare will be instrumental in setting up the competition event on our beautiful beach, organising the sandcastle competition, and cooking the beach BBQ Sausage Sizzle.

Our very own local expert Ziggy Sigel will be creating a sand sculpture on the beach from 7am which will be an added attraction alongside the competition. Ziggy will also hold a workshop on Sunday 28 September on Rainbow Beach from 3pm to 4pm to give some handy tips and tricks for building sandcastles.

Come join us on Thursday 2 October on the beach north of the SLS flags for a morning of fun and creativity. Entry is $10 for a team or solo budding artist. Registration is at 9.30am with the competition starting at 10am. Judging will be at 12 and the presentation of prizes at 12.30pm.

The ‘Chappy Ronnie Trophy’, an inaugural trophy, will be presented to the people’s choice winner.

The Cooloola Coastcare team will be supporting Hannah Timperton from the Beach & Bay Community Pantry to make this a great community affair. All proceeds will go to the Beach & Bay Community Pantry.

Rainbow Cares Get a Bus!

SPRING IS HERE, and just like the blooming wildflowers, new projects are sprouting at Rainbow Cares, including one that’s sure to bring a smile to many familiar faces around the Cooloola Coast Area.

The phone rang… “We’ve got a bus!”

Yes, Rainbow Cares now has its very own community transport. This dedicated vehicle will make it easier, safer, and more comfortable for our elderly locals to get out and about.

“Our service has always aimed to help seniors stay in their own homes and feel connected to their community,” said Tamara Emms, RBCC Care Coordinator.

“Now, we can do even more. The idea came since our clients would ask how they could get to things like expos, quilt shows and to places like the Men’s Shed.

Through this investment we can finally take them there: walkers, wheelies and all”.

With the new bus, the Rainbow Cares team can organise group outings and offer more opportunities for fun and connection, whether it’s a trip to shops, a local event, or simply a drive for a cuppa and a change of scenery.

To celebrate, last month the team launched on social media a ‘Name the Bus’ competition, and the winning name will be revealed in next month’s paper.

In the meantime, the office is working on a monthly calendar of activities and outings, helping seniors and carers plan ahead and make the most of what’s on.

If you see the Rainbow Cares bus out on the road give them a wave!

SURF, SAND, AND SOLDIERS:

Exercise Surfing Penguin returns to Rainbow Beach

RAINBOW BEACH will once again set the scene for a unique military training activity as the 10th Force Support Battalion, 35 Water Transport Squadron launches Exercise Surfing Penguin from 1 September to 9 September 2025.

The annual exercise prepares soldiers for the unexpected, training them to move people and supplies through surf conditions so they’re ready to respond when disaster strikes. Whether providing flood relief or delivering aid after a cyclone, these skills are vital for the High-Risk Weather Season (October–March).

Locals and visitors will spot the impressive LARC-V amphibious vehicles driving in and out of the surf, capable of operating in waves

up to two metres. Soldiers will also train with Zodiac inflatable boats, building confidence in challenging surf conditions.

Rainbow Beach is the ideal location for this work, being the first significant surf zone south of the Great Barrier Reef.

The Department of Defence reminds the community to follow ‘Military Activity in Progress’ signage during training for safety. However, when vehicles aren’t operating and training is paused, the public is welcome to meet the soldiers and learn more about the important work they do.

Book Club raises a glass to Local Author

RAINBOW BEACH’S ‘Reading in

Between the Wines’ Book Club has shown its support for a local emerging author by selecting More Than Spaghetti – Italian Migration Stories in the Gympie Region as their annual donation to the Gympie Regional Library’s Book Club Collection.

The group meets monthly to discuss their latest read, and in August they welcomed local Italian-Australian author Elisa Mele Seul to join the conversation. After the meeting, they presented the set of books to the library, ensuring other clubs across the Gympie Region can now borrow it.

Rainbow Beach is home to six official book clubs, all connected through the Gympie Regional Library network. Membership is free, and each month the library supplies sets of eight books to every club, ordered through the regional catalogue. The only expectation is that each club purchases one set to donate back to the collection, keeping the resource fresh and accessible for all.

Recently retired librarian and ‘Avids’ Book Club member Therese Young shared some key elements:

“Eight sets of the chosen book are provided by the library and can be ordered through the Gympie Regional Library catalogue. It is absolutely cost-free.

Each group is encouraged to buy a set to donate, and it gets catalogued. So everyone is just buying a book a year.”

The Avids, Rainbow Beach’s first book club, is in their 10th anniversary, a milestone that aligns with the opening of the library building in 2012.

Across the region, Gympie Regional

Libraries operate six branches and maintain a network of more than 100 book-club sets and over 25 active reading groups.

For Elisa, the Reading in Between the Wines meeting was both personal and professional. Members offered thoughtful feedback on the accessibility of her writing, the way the book connected global events to local history, and the insights it provided into Italian prisoners of war in the region.

Former teachers in the group were particularly struck by finding the names of former students in the book’s research and pieces of untold history.

Rainbow Beach’s network of book clubs, sustained by the library and its members, shows that reading is a valued part of community life, alongside the town’s well-known outdoor lifestyle.

Bubbles & Boas Is Back!

CONCEIVED BY Rainbow Beach

locals Vicky Miles and Louise Cullen, last year’s Bubbles & Boas event sprang to life with delightful simplicity: “We just wanted an opportunity to dance.”

Their vision? A welcoming, fun-filled gathering where women of all levels - beginners and seasoned movers alike - could come together, shimmy, and shine.

To bring the idea to life, the duo enlisted Toni Robinson of Toni Robinson’s Dance School in Maryborough, a beloved institution celebrating half a century of dance education. Known for her flair and

inclusive teaching, Toni was the perfect match to deliver a joyful dance experience to all attendees.

The inaugural event sparked enthusiasm, a passion for dance, and plenty of requests for a repeat - and the call has been answered!

On Saturday 25 October 2025 from 2pm to 4pm, the Rainbow Beach Community Centre will fill with music and movement. Toni will lead participants through fun mini-routines across various dance styles. Whether you’re stepping out for the first time or following the rhythm with ease, this afternoon is for you.

Participation is just $20 per person, with payment by cash upon arrival. After the dance, attendees are invited to stay for a relaxed post-dance catch-up. Bring your own favorite drink and some snacks, and enjoy an easygoing chat with fellow funseekers.

As event organiser Vicky says, “Girls just wanna have fun!” So come on ladies, bring your boa or

scarf if you have one, throw on some comfy clothes and head on down on 25 October. Bubbles & Boa’s isn’t just about dance - it’s about community, connection, and a sparkling dash of joy.

Mark your calendars, spread the word, and get ready to step, sway, laugh, and dance your heart out at this uplifting new Rainbow Beach tradition.

Tin Can Bay turns up the Energy

MUSIC WAS PUMPING, wheels were spinning and the vibe was electric at the Skate and Relate session in Tin Can Bay on 23 August. The event was run by Chiggy’s Skateboarding whose mission is to activate local skate parks and create safe, positive spaces where young people can connect, feel supported, and build confidence through skateboarding.

The day featured learn-to-skate workshops, one-on-one and group coaching, live demonstrations, music, giveaways, food, and more, all led by three professional skateboard coaches with extensive experience in youth engagement.

Designed for vulnerable youth under 17, the initiative is backed by the Gympie Police Crime Prevention Unit and Tin Can Bay Police, who joined the event to show their support.

The next Skate and Relate session will be held at Cooloola Cove on Wednesday 24 September 2025. Spaces are limited, so register your interest now at hello@ chiggysskateboarding.com.au. Walk-ins are welcome on the day, subject to availability.

TERM 3 KICKED off with celebrating the love of reading with our annual Book Fair! Late last term, the students were busy creating art pieces to incorporate into displays and this combined with an after-hours staff working bee, the school library was transformed into a magical garden of books!

The “ooohs” and “aaahs” from the students as they entered the fair was simply amazing!

The highlight was the dress-up parade as students were tasked with dressing up as anything garden themed. We had all sorts of wonderful creations including a flutter of butterflies, gnomes, pot plants, fairies, trees, flowers, fruits and vegetables and even a clump of grass! It was truly amazing.

Thank you again to everyone who supported the book fair and was able to come and enjoy the experience. Whilst the purpose of the fair is to provide access to a variety of books and to inspire and encourage a love of reading, we also managed to raise nearly $600 for our school library!

This term has been busy with lots of fun filled activities still to come! The students have been learning many new concepts across the curriculum and we are very proud of the effort that they have been putting in.

Recently, selected students from Year 5 & 6 competed in the Gympie Schools Maths Challenge. This interschool maths competition has been running for 23 years, and this year

there were 24 teams from 12 different schools from the Gympie region. Our students performed exceedingly well, placing 2nd overall. An amazing achievement!

As many of you are aware, over the past few months, the school has been undertaking a School Led Review. The review aims to provide affirmations of things that are being done well and strategies on ways in which we can improve or implement change.

Recently, we had a visit from a review team to verify the data which we collected. During this 2-day process, the panel interviewed over 50 people including students, staff, parents, and community members. We would like to thank all of those who took time to participate, your feedback was extremely valuable. We look forward to sharing some of the feedback and affirmations once the final report has been compiled.

Top: Scan QR Code to book now for OSHC! Above and below: Our library was transformed into a magical book garden!
The dress-up parade was the highlight of the Book Fair.

With only 5 weeks until school holidays, we still have plenty to go!

Upcoming is a Year 2/3 camp to Barambah Educational Centre, where the students learn all about bees and what goes into building a hive. The 5/6s will also be heading off on a leadership camp in week 9 to Hervey Bay, where they will go on a whale watching tour along with many other fun filled activities.

In recognition of Science Week, the Year 4s will be hopping aboard the Mary Valley Rattler and taking part in various activities. The Prep/1 class also has an excursion planned for early Term 4. Finally for the sporting enthusiasts there is a Rugby League Gala Day and a Broncos League Challenge in weeks 9 & 10 – lots of great experiences planned!

We are also excited to share that the P&C are planning for Term 4 to come alive with a Colour Day! While we’re still waiting on the final green light, the buzz is already building. It’s a perfect way to wrap up the year. We can’t wait to bring everyone together for a day filled with colour, laughter, and plenty of fun!

In other exciting news, we’ve recently sourced a company to fit a tow bar for the Sports Club Bus – a generous donation that will make a real difference for our excursion needs. We’re so grateful for the support from community and local businesses.

SPRING into fun this upcoming holiday season! Looking for an exciting, safe and engaging place for your kids these spring holidays? Our vacation care program is now open for enrolments with flexible booking

options! Whether you’re a local family or visiting and just want a day to yourselves, your family is welcome to join us for a holiday full of adventures, creativity and new friendships.

As we get closer, we will be posting a calendar of events. Spaces are limited - book now to secure your spot!

Dates: 22 September - 26 September & 29 September - 3 October, 8am4pm, at Rainbow Beach State School. $100/day & CCS available!

If you would like to enrol your child into OSHC, contact us on 0480 501 870 or email oshcrainbowbeach@ gmail.com. Alternatively, you can enrol online, the link is also on our P&C Facebook page or via the QR Code. Our regular hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 2:30pm5:30pm and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 8am-4pm during school holidays.

Finally, we would like to thank our families and the community for support during our August Raffles at the Rainbow Beach Hotel and the Rainbow Beach Sports Club. It was a very busy month with 11 raffle nights in total, but as the families and community pulled together to volunteer some time, it was a true reflection of ‘many hands make light work’.

We are very grateful to the Rainbow Beach Hotel and the Rainbow Beach Sports Club for their ongoing support, the raffles greatly contribute to our annual fundraising. We also warmly invite all parents and community members to attend our P&C Meetings. It’s a great way to stay connected, share ideas and support our school. New faces are always welcome.

Sew much to Share!

HELLO TO ALL, it’s been a busy couple of months at the Tin Can Bay quilters group, so busy in fact we haven’t even been able to get our article into the local rags in time for printing. Well, it’s time for a change and let everyone know what we have been up to and what’s coming up in the future.

Marie completed this extremely pretty ‘scrap busting’ quilt in June, she has also top quilted it herself. Marie is one of our very clever ladies and quite the accomplished quilter.

What is scrap busting? I hear you ask. Well, quilters have a rather large number of beautiful materials tucked away in cupboards, boxes and anywhere else they can hide them from their partners (so they never get wind of how much we spend ha,ha) waiting to be used for that project they are going to do one day…one day.

We call this our ‘stash’, and we are all guilty of this terrible infliction that really is an incurable disease.

There have been many other completed projects, unfortunately I don’t have enough room to show all of them in this month’s article, but I will endeavor to try going forward.

Eleven of us returned from Bargara in August after our four-day quilters retreat. Lots of sewing, lessons, and learning were done and we had a lovely time going out and trying the local food.

Of course, Spotlight, and the Quilters Shack in Bundaberg took a stock hit on our way in. Van Cootens in Howard also had their stocks depleted on the way home, so lots of fun hunting for the perfect fabric or pattern was had by all.

As we look at the quickly depleting calendar, we turn our focus to Christmas and gift making. It’s only 141 days until Christmas as I type this, we have started research to where to have our potential Christmas lunch.

As we enjoy the return of the warmer weather, summer will be back before we know it but I’m looking forward to spring, as there are lots of flowers, colours to inspire us all.

Want to join in? We meet every Tuesday from 9am-12pm at the Community Hall, Amity Place, Tin Can Bay, $5 entry fee, and we have a long day one day a month until 2pm.

Shed Load of thanks from TCBCAMS

OUR

TIN CAN BAY Community & Men’s Shed (TCBCAMS) President Bryan would like to take this opportunity to thank all the lovely people who participated at the Shed, making the Shed’s part in the Gympie Art Trail such a success.

With a special thank you to the wonderful people from Rainbow Beach and Gympie that joined us for the two days. So much fun.

Come down for another exciting day in Tin Can Bay with the City Farm Native Nursery Open Day on Saturday 6 September. Where the best sausage sizzle in town is to be found.

The Tin Can Bay Community & Men’s Shed will be open on Saturday 6 September as well from 7am to 12pm, so pop in and see if you can find a bargain or just to say “Hello.” Or bring down your empty bottles and cans to donate at the Shed. Which is always appreciated and helps to fund the Shed with new equipment.

The Community Complex will also be open on the same day, with Table Tennis displays and Market Stalls. Maybe a little Christmas shopping! There will be a new Skiff on display in the community area as well, so come along and see such a beautiful boat. What a way to spend a Saturday morning with so much to see and do.

The Shed is open Monday to Friday between 9 am and 12pm. Or call our lovely Secretary Raewyn on 0412 995 512 or President Bryan on 0420 299 651 to enquire about becoming a member. Also don’t forget we are open every third Saturday of the month for Sale Day.

Very special thanks to the lovely Carole, who usually writes the articles for the Shed that keeps us all informed every month. Carole is on vacation in the UK and having a ball, I am sure.

Rainbow Beach DroughtRunners Report

ONCE AGAIN our attention has been solely directed to the western Queensland flood area. Hasn’t the press gone quiet with nothing about the situation facing poor farmers out west.

If you don’t know what I am talking about, look up iView ABC QLD then Landline from 20 April 2025. You can also look up Landline from 17 August.

I have just done a 2,300km round trip to Isisford Showgrounds to drop supplies to BlazeAid, the notfor-profit group who are feeding many volunteers three meals a day, while the volunteers are fencing and helping farmers clean up their properties.

There are at present three camps out west at Jundah, Quilpie, and Isisford, and of course others on the NSW Coast around Taree with volunteers urgently required. Some stories from the area are horrific, especially those from people sitting on

house roofs in the dark waiting to be lifted out by helicopter and listening to their pets drown as they could not take them (that’s enough).

Big thank for support to Tin Can Bay Bakery, Bill Neale for his wooden toys which have gone to schools out west, Wayne Kerle for 10c returns, Rainbow Beach Meats for prawn donations and 10doz snags at a reasonable price, Mitchell’s Fruit & Veg, Rainbow Beach IGA for donations, Cooloola Foods, Lees Fishing, Jo Wearing from Grafton for a wonderful donation of $3,000, Tin Can Bay Dragon Boats $200, Ace Wholesalers, and all other donors.

Hopefully donations can keep helping the west as it will be a long road to recovery. So PLEASE if anyone can help our phone and bank details are:

Swing into Spring at Kandanga Hall

THE AUGUST Old Time Country Hall dance held at Belli was well attended. A huge thank you to those members who phoned stating they were keeping away due to illness. The Cooloola Coast Dances Group appreciate everyone’s input at the dance and wish those who were unwell a speedy recovery.

A huge welcome and thank you to John, a New South Welshman who kindly took pictures of during the night while he listened to the great

music being played by Chris.

A friendly hello to Sam and his lovely partner Emma who enjoyed mixing in and learning the dances on the hop... We look forward to your return to dance the night away.

Our September dance is our Springtime dance and we hope to see you all back spritely and back tapping your toes.

The lucky spot prizes were won by Nes and Gaz, Murray and Robyn. The meat tray proudly donated by Woody was won by Pam W. The lucky door prize was won by Coral. The Fruit and

Veg tray was won by Gary L. The Monte Carlo was won by Terry and Margaret.

The Cooloola Coast Dances Group were proud to hold the past 14 dances at the Belli Community Hall and wish to say thank you to the Hall Committee for allowing us to hire the hall. The floor was great to dance on. We wish them well with their future endeavours.

From 20 September 2025, the Cooloola Coast Dances Group will be holding the monthly Old Time Country Hall dances in the Kandanga Public Hall, from 7pm till 11pm.

The music will be provided by our regular muso Chris and he can’t wait to play his catchy tunes for the new venue. Entry is only $15 per adult which covers a light supper, a great night of live music, and hall hire. Being our Springtime dance we hope the weather will be warmer. We look forward to seeing you and to hosting the dances at the Kandanga Public Hall on 20 September, 18 October, and 15 November 2025. Dances will continue from April through to November 2026 also at the Kandanga Public Hall. Contact Julie 0428 824 115.

A Cracking Vietnam Veterans’ Day in Tin Can Bay

IT HAS JUST turned 11am on Tuesday 19 August and the rain has just started to pelt down outside. It is admin day at the Tin Can Bay RSL and there are a few of us volunteers ‘in-house’ doing what we need to do to keep our RSL running.

I look across at Tin Can Bay RSL secretary, Simon Gray, and say, “Mate, thank goodness the weather wasn’t like this yesterday!”

We commemorate Vietnam Veterans’ Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. We remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to the Australians who served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War, as well as those who were left behind.

This year’s Vietnam Veterans’ Day particularly recognised the 50th anniversary of the last Australian troop withdrawal from Vietnam, the Embassy Guard.

Vietnam Veterans’ Day in Tin Can Bay was a cracker, with stunning weather and a big turnout for the

service at ANZAC Memorial Park. The service commenced at 11am sharp. Guest speaker Australian Army Veteran with 20 years’ service, Peter Scott, did a great job summarising the events that lead up to the Vietnam War and the challenges that beset our gallant Australian Defence force members who were involved.

Many wreaths were laid by veterans, students, and members of our community. A wreath was laid by Sam, daughter of local Battle of Long Tan veteran, Jim Richmond, who couldn’t attend this year’s service. Merv Young laid a wreath for Alan (Skid) Turnbull, a Vietnam Veteran who passed away recently.

Following the wreath laying President Don Holland recited ‘The Ode’ and Jennifer Eyre sang Advance Australia Fair.

Following the service, Vietnam Veterans, RSL and community members and visitors adjourned to the Tin Can Bay RSL for remembrance and camaraderie.

What a day it was. For all those involved – Thank You for your service!

Riddles

fun with the Tin Can Bay Lions

F

RIENDSHIP, FUN AND fellowship were on full display at the August meeting of the Tin Can Bay Lions Club. Members gathered at the Sleepy Lagoon Hotel over lunch to share laughs, test their wits and get creative, all while keeping community projects at the heart of what we do.

The ‘What’s in the Lion?’ riddle kept brains busy with the clue: ‘I live underground where I can’t be found. Until the time is right, I’ll pop into the light. Some find me lovely, some find me dangerous. Thanks to a psycho lady I’ve become more famous.’

Adding to the fun, each member was given a handful of Lego pieces to build something during the meeting. From a mouse to a bridge, a diving

board to a sustainable building and even a trailer, the creations proved that Lions may build different things, but always work together as one team.

There was also time for reflection, with members coming together to create fresh wreaths for the Vietnam Veterans Day service at the RSL.

The Club is asking members of the public and other community groups who would like to join in future wreathmaking for veteran remembrance to contact the Club.

Remembrance Day is in November and it would be fantastic to see more wreaths being made (either fresh or reusable) as a new tradition moving forward.

The colourful brick creations had Lions Club members channelling their inner Lego Master!

Check out the Cooloola Coast’s favourite newspaper on social media ...

The Lions are also looking ahead to several ongoing projects:

• Donations of rates notice free trees (available until January 2026) will support both native plantings and wreath-making at Cathy House so please allocate at City Farm Nursery.

• Plans are underway to possibly introduce gluten-free Lions Christmas Cakes for 2025 sales.

• Blue materials (cloth, wool, etc.) are still needed for the October mental health project, while a future red-themed project means red donations will also be gratefully received.

To get involved, text or call 0411 218 254. And finally, the answer to the What’s in the Lion riddle was a mushroom!

CONGRATULATIONS to Alan Redding on becoming our latest Heart Foundation Walk (HFW) Organiser. Thanks for your long term commitment as a caring, focused group member and chief organiser of our Tin Can Bay Christmas party. Much appreciated.

Welcome to Deb, our newest member of ‘One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay’. Great to enjoy your company along our foreshore. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the early group departs Tin Can Bay Bakery at 6.30am in spring; the later group at 7am.

Invitations are extended to other Heart Foundation Walking groups, especially those coordinated by Laura David, in the Gympie Regional Council area.

We are hoping that members of

the Gympie Bunnings group will join our Cooloola Coast walkers. Walk Organiser, Elaine, told us that they are keen to walk along our beautiful foreshore in Tin Can Bay.

CC Wheelie Walkers leave the Shopping Centre bus shelter on Nautilus Drive at 7.30am, Mondays and Fridays during spring and autumn.

By the time you are reading this, I expect to have achieved my HFW goal of 1,000 officially recorded walks.

Coastal Rowing ready to launch!

Chris Thomson

Launch and naming of the first St Ayles Rowing Skiff in Queensland!

Tin Can Bay Coastal Rowing Club is excited to announce that the launch and naming ceremony for our first skiff will be held at the Norman Point boat ramp at 11am on Sunday 28 September!

The first St Ayles Skiff in Queensland! Come along and join the celebration!

The skiff has been built by club members over the past 18 months and it’s looking fantastic! Seventeen members participated in the boatbuilding at various stages, with a core group of six people driving the process from start to finish.

Special mention to Tony Galea for the most consistent contribution over the whole period.

New Membership

As we are about to start rowing activities the club is actively recruiting new members.

The club’s membership year runs from 1 September until 31 August each year, so now is the perfect time to join and gain the benefit of a full year’s membership.

Skiff rowing is for all ages, particularly those who may have considered their sporting days behind them. The skiffs may be used multiple times each

week, catering for a wide range of interests and rowing activities. Prior rowing experience is not necessary and we will be forming crews of many ages and abilities. A few members rowed while at school; many others are about to take up an oar for the first time.

Building a Second Skiff

If you’ve watched with interest our progress in building this first skiff and thought you might like to be part of that activity, we will be commencing the build of a second skiff in the near future.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Gambling and Community Benefit Fund, the kit for the second skiff, and associated materials and equipment, have been purchased and in the boat shed already.

Supporting City Farm Open Day

Club members are supporting the City Farm Open Day on 6 September and will have the skiff on display prior to its official launch.

This is a perfect opportunity to get a feel for the skiff.

Sign up to join the crew on your way into the nursery! Or email tcbcoastalrowing@gmail.com to receive a membership application form by return.

Table Tennis nets a win in Tin Can Bay

FRIDAY MORNINGS in Tin Can Bay are full of laughter, energy and the satisfying smack of paddles meeting ping pong balls. The YAPhosted Tin Can Bay Table Tennis crew meets every Friday from 9–11am at 110 Emperor Street and it’s proving more popular than ever!

A little creative thinking and careful management of the $5 weekly fee meant brand-new nets were recently installed, much to the delight of players.

Plus, thanks to a donated brand-

new tabletop set onto a recycled base, the group now boasts three good tables, giving plenty of room for everyone to enjoy a good rally or a lively doubles game.

The sessions aren’t just about sport, it’s also a place to meet new people, share a laugh and finish the morning with a well-earned coffee together. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just keen to try something new, you’ll be welcomed with open arms and maybe challenged to a quick game!

The first St Ayles Skiff in Queensland is ready to launch - join the celebration on 28 September.
Players are happy to be using the new nets at Tin Can Bay Table Tennis!

Wes Mitchell parkrun Turns Two!

WE HAD A fabulous celebration for our 2nd Birthday on 26 July. There was lots of fun, food and bubbles and 46 people joined us to complete our parkrun.

Everyone then celebrated with birthday cake, cupcakes, cookies, and a selection of other goodies. Thanks to our Volunteer Photographer on the day, Nadine Gray, for the wonderful photos.

Many may not know that our parkrun involves kids all the way through to retirees. Even people who aren’t interested in doing 5 kilometres can come and volunteer.

Whether you prefer a relaxed walk,

a steady jog, or you’re pushing for a new personal best, parkrun is for you. These free 5k weekly events welcome all abilities, offering a supportive space to get moving at your own pace. It’s not a race – unless you want it to be.

You can enjoy the community vibe, track your progress online, and set your goals. Whether you’re in it for the fresh air, the fitness or the finish time, parkrun makes it easy to show up and keep coming back.

Prams and dogs are welcome to join the fun. Dogs need to be on a short hand held lead and one dog per person.

Best of all, it’s completely free!

No cost to join - just register once then bring your scannable barcode and you’re all set up to participate at any parkrun within Australia or in one of the many other countries that have parkrun. To register go to www. parkrun.com.au/register

Most importantly, parkrun is entirely run by volunteers.

We are at Wes Mitchell Park (behind the playground), Tin Can Bay every Saturday morning. Briefings start at 6.50am and the parkrun starts at 7.00am. Check out our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ wesmitchellparkparkrun

Come for the exercise, stay for the community!

Tin Can Bay Pickleball in full swing

IT’S BEEN A great month for The Tin Can Bay Pickleball Club.

Our Monday and Friday sessions at The Community Complex have been well attended, as have the Council Courts on Wednesdays and Saturdays when some pretty indifferent wet days allowed! Spring is on us now and we welcome some more settled weather.

We have had great support from Gympie Council. Not only have the Council Courts been pressurecleaned and many years of muck and loose gravel removed, but they have also repaired the netting. The whole place looks so much better and we thank them for listening and acting.

We have now adopted a Club Logo which you will see alongside this article. Our Members feel that this encompasses the spirit of fun and community that is at the heart of our Club.

We have also adopted a Club Polo shirt which is available at a sponsored cost of $40 to all Financial Members.

Financial Membership of our Club is $20pa and is there to cover our modest running costs. We do encourage you all to support us. The response we are receiving from Tin Can Bay and beyond is impressive.

Pickleball is a rapidly growing sport throughout Australia. It’s there for all ages, all levels of ability. To join please email your request to howarddavies@dinjalla.com.au.

Rainbow Beach Amateur Anglers

President’s Report

Social Meet, Tactics, Tackle and Technique for the August Competition

Although down on numbers due to the weather conditions, a few keen anglers ventured to the Rainbow Beach Sports Club on the Friday night to catch up and discuss tactics and tackle for the weekend.

New members Shayne and Ken discovered they were both keen jetski fisherman and made plans to venture out together when conditions are more favourable.

Drew gave us a rundown on recent catches and confirmed that Whiting activity in the straits is increasing and the Tailor have arrived in plague proportions, thank you Drew.

August Competition

Did someone say the RBAA had a fishing comp planned for the weekend! After an absolute cracker of a weekend for the July comp, you could not have predicted such adverse conditions for the August Comp!

Winds up to 30 knots, swell to 3 metres, and rain meant the offshore comp was cancelled on Thursday night. and beach and straits fishing and crabbing was only for those dedicated.

Junior Competition

Ollie Pearce and Sonny Bennett were a couple of juniors who showed their mettle to brave the conditions in

Rainbow Beach TIDE TIMES

the straits and present a bag of fish to claim the Junior Prizes for the month.

The tie breaker was deployed as both Sonny and Ollie accumulated 2 points, however Ollie only had one fish - a cracker of a Tailor weighing 1,290 grams.

1st Ollie Pearce 2 pts 1 Fish

2nd Sonny Bennett 2 pts 2 Fish

Inshore Competition

The conditions meant inshore fish were in short supply. John Hollingworth added to his account this month with

Offshore Competition

The weather conditions meant that the offshore competition needed to be cancelled. Fishing in the straits was the order of the day, taking cover in the lee of Tin Can Bay Vern Ezzy managed to capture a couple of Whiting to add a few points to his season tally

1st Vern Ezzy 12 pts

Female Competition

Our female competitors were otherwise occupied this week visiting relatives, recovering from Swains trips, tending injured husbands, or just staying home warm and dry meant that none of our female members were able to weigh in.

Catch & Release

Member Welfare

Our thoughts are with Nev & Lesley Stutz at present. Nev had a serious boating accident while setting his pots for August’s comp and at time of writing is in the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Nev’s recovery is going well.

Nev would like to thank Maddie, Steve, and Greg who assisted in getting him safely into the competent hands of Ambulance Officer Shane Douglas and the Helicopter Rescue Crew who airlifted him to the hospital. All of us at the Rainbow Beach Amateur Anglers wish Nev a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the water as soon as possible.

Remember to wear your lifejacket and attach the motor lanyard when in the boat!

Tin Can Bay Fishing Club Report

WELL HELLO THERE. Our club has had a busy month both on and off the water, and with some of the best days of the year weather-wise, we’ve been out doing what we love and there have been a few nice fish coming over the side.

The professor, Ron Cox was at it again with a 96cm Cod and his companion for the day, Marquis Chapman, also boating a nice specimen of a Cod as well. Dereck Andrews has been harassing the Flathead again with a nice fat 60cm model for his trouble, way bigger some of us could manage, Nice work guys.

Dan Lyell and his boys Connor and Mace were into the reef fish on a recent trip with some exceptional fish coming in such as Tuna, Red Throat, Sweet Lip and Nannygai.

Our monthly two-day competition was run and won by Dereck Andrews with a cracker haul of Whiting. Fish of the Month award went to Ron Cox with his ‘donkey’ of a 96cm Cod, and our second squid week winner was Barry Nalder.

Our presentation day was also a ton of fun with the Master Caster competition going off, and this month Gavin Hay was the champ. Just for something different the ladies conned the guys into a bake-off with the target species/dish being Cheesecake.

There were seven cheesecakes submitted and really in my opinion there were seven winners but everybody sampled every dish and a vote was taken, with the winner being Barry Nalder’s Chocolate Swirl number (I still think there were seven winners).

We had a bit of a surprise award presented to the club from Bunnings, being for excellence in cleanliness and excellence in order at our sausage sizzles. This was presented to Chris Murphy at a community networking night held at the Gympie Store.

Chris was also the correct person to be receiving this award as he and his wife Rita are the backbone of these fundraisers and the standards they have led us to achieve. Well done us.

A few of the members ventured over to Teewah Beach for our monthly beach day. Conditions were probably not the best for beach fishing due to the big seas and wind but they all had a good day with Flathead, Dart, and Whiting being the species next to grace the dinner table.

A few of the members also went up the beach on K’gari (Fraser Island) this month to meet up with the Hervey Bay Amateur Fishing Club members searching for Tailor amongst others, but more about that in next month’s article.

The next workshop on usage of Depth Sounders and Chart Plotters was held which was again a popular night even with a few of the gremlins creeping into the video presentations.

These workshops are becoming something we look forward to and some different nights are to come e.g. Fishing Lake Monduran, Fishing Borumba Dam, and various species specific talks, so these should be good nights.

Keep Sunday 14 September free for the kids as we are planning another day to help out the juniors with bait collecting, rigging and fishing down at Norman Point. It’s open to the public again as the last one was well attended and a ton of fun for all concerned.

For more information watch for upcoming notices on our Club’s social media page.

That’s about all we have to share with you so, thank you for reading and stay safe and well.

Barry Nalder
Dad Dan Lyell’s cracker Nannygai.
The boys’ cheesecakes - all seven were winners in my (Barry’s) opinion!
Connor Lyell with his Red Throat.
Mace Lyell added this Tuna to the family haul.
Chris Murphy deservedly collected this Bunnings award on behalf of the Club recently.

Tin Can Bay P-10 School

to our wonderful HoSES

ON FRIDAY 1 August, our school community came together to give a heartfelt farewell to Mrs Deb

Webb, our Head of Special Education Services (HoSES). After four years of dedicated service, Deb is moving on to a new role closer to her home in Tewantin.

To mark the occasion, the whole school lined the pathways for a special clap out, sending Deb off with cheers, applause, and plenty of smiles.

During her time at Tin Can Bay School, Deb made a significant impact on both students and staff, supporting our diverse learners with compassion, professionalism, and dedication. Her dedication to fostering inclusive education and supporting student wellbeing has created a lasting impact.

Although we are sad to see her go, we are excited for her as she takes on this new chapter.

Deb will be greatly missed by all, and we wish her every success in her new position.

Tin Can Bay Band Strikes a Winning Note!

ON MONDAY 4 August, 22 talented students from Tin Can Bay P-10 State School proudly represented their school at the Gympie Eisteddfod, performing as the Tin Can Bay Concert Band.

After travelling to the Gympie Showgrounds Pavilion, the students waited nervously for over three hours in a packed venue before finally taking the stage.

Competing in Item 245 – Concert Band P-10 Schools, they were one of three schools in the category. After watching a range of other performances, including four high

school bands and five primary school bands, the Tin Can Bay students stepped up with focus, confidence, and determination.

Their hard work paid off. The band performed with outstanding musicality and precision, earning glowing praise from the adjudicator and an impressive score of 90 out of 100 – securing first place!

Congratulations to all the students involved. You demonstrated talent, dedication, and teamwork, and you represented Tin Can Bay with pride and excellence.

National Tree Day – Growing a Greener Future

EACH YEAR on National Tree Day, thousands of Australians roll up their sleeves and dig in to make a difference for our environment.

Since 1996, more than 28 million trees have been planted through this nationwide initiative - and this year, the goal is to add one million more!

At Tin Can Bay School, our Year 10 students proudly joined the cause by helping plant trees around the school grounds. Partnering with local

councillor Jess Milne, the students worked together to give back to the land and enhance our local environment.

The morning was a fantastic opportunity to learn about sustainability, biodiversity, and the important role trees play in our ecosystem. It was also a chance to contribute to a greener future.

Well done to everyone involved for making a real and lasting impact!

Supporting Students, One Fundraiser at a Time

AFTER RECENTLY providing thousands of dollars in subsidies to support student learning experiences, the Tin Can Bay P&C is hard at work fundraising to keep this assistance going strong.

A big thank you goes to the P&C members, staff, and community who supported the P&C Bunnings BBQ, a day that just missed the rain but saw sausages flying out the door - raising over $1,500!

Special mention to the clean-up crew, who left the BBQ area so spotless that they were rewarded with a free Bunnings cookie.

In August, the P&C proved that ‘where there’s

a will, there’s a way’ with a member pulling together a Hot Dog Meal Deal Day in under a week. The result? A fantastic $400 profit, thanks to the volunteers who made it happen and the students who enjoyed a hot dog lunch.

Looking ahead, the Colour Fun Run returns on the last day of Term 3, promising a kaleidoscope of colour and fun while raising funds for student learning experiences and playground infrastructure. Weekly mini challenges are already underway, with Class 5/6D winning the first round (and a tasty brownie treat) for completing the most online fundraising profiles.

Students are keenly seeking donations to their profiles so please dig deep if you’re asked

to support. Did you know that businesses and community members can also donate? To support the Fun Run, email pandc@tincanbayss. edu.eq.au for a link to the donation page or search the Tin Can Bay P-10 State School Facebook page.

The P&C Volleyball Committee is also busy supporting the volleyball program. They host the ever-popular Toastie Tuesdays each week and will be firing up the BBQ at Gympie Bunnings on Friday, 5 September (a student-free day) so pop in for a snag to help support school volleyball!

New P& C members are always welcome. To join the team, visit the school office for a membership form.

Mrs Deb Webb was given a clap out by the staff and students.

Council Corner

New Lifeguard Tower

Due to the age and condition of the existing lifeguard tower at Rainbow Beach, Gympie Regional Council conducted an assessment of the tower and have now made plans to replace the tower.

The works will involve demolition of the existing tower and concrete slab and installation of a new tower in early 2026. There will be some tree pruning required to accommodate the new tower.

Council will minimise disruptions to the Surf Life Saving Club so that they can continue their vital operations and we look forward to bringing this new facility to the community.

Bird of Cooloola Book

Cooloola Coastcare Association

Inc have proudly co-published a book with Gympie Regional Council named ‘Cooloola Birds of Interest’. The booklet aims to heighten awareness of the diversity of species that are supported by the range of habitats in the Cooloola region and provides a snapshot of the lesser known species.

Be it in your backyard, out walking the trails or just exploring around the waterways of Cooloola, there are opportunities to see unfamiliar birds. Discover the hidden treasures of Cooloola on the designated bird walks with maps included in the booklet.

Be a Responsible Dog Owner

Is your dog registered? Gympie Regional Council will be conducting an Approved Inspection Program in

the form of a series of dog inspections across the region from 1 September. The program will operate for three months and during that time will target unregistered dogs and educate the community on how to be responsible dog owners. Visit www.gympie.qld.gov.au to register your dog online or to access more information.

The Du Rietz Art Awards is Gympie Regional Gallery’s signature biennial art competition, established to celebrate artistic excellence and foster creative talent within the region and across Australia.

With $15,500 in prize money across five categories including acquisitive prizes and community-voted awards, the competition provides artists a meaningful opportunity to showcase their work, expand networks, and engage with the wider arts community.

The official opening and award presentation will take place on Friday 17 October, with the exhibition open until 22 November. Come and visit the Gympie Regional Gallery to see the award winning art.

Blooming Marvellous - It’s Flower Show Time

THE COOLOOLA COAST Local Ambulance Committee (CCLAC) is pleased to announce that we will be holding our annual Flower Show on Saturday 4 October at the Tin Can Bay Community Centre.

The doors will open at 9am with the presentation to prize winners at 2pm. Flower and plant entries can be delivered to the Centre between 2pm and 5pm on the previous day, Friday 3 October.

Entry forms will be available at various retail outlets including both libraries and can also be obtained at the Community Centre on Friday. The committee looks forward to having your beautiful flowers and plants on display.

A photography competition will be part of the show and as always, will showcase the remarkable talent in the local area. Entries for the

photography section can be left at Tin Can Bay Fruit Store and at the Rainbow Beach Library by Monday 29 September.

The public support for the show is much appreciated as all proceeds go towards helping our Cooloola Coast Ambulance Service. There will be stalls, raffles and plants for sale as well as morning and afternoon teas. Live entertainment will also be provided by our local music groups. As an additional attraction this year, there will be an Ambulance CPR van outside the hall. Trainers will provide instruction on the correct way to perform CPR - a most important skill for us all to possess.

So please come along and spend a very pleasant few hours among all the garden lovers and keen photographers in our community. Please note that we do NOT have EFTPOS facilities.

Long-Haul Flyers return to our Shores

OUR MIGRATORY shorebirds are returning from the Arctic. They can be seen feeding at low tide on the shorelines at Inskip Point, Cooloola Cove, and Tin Can Bay. They will arrive exhausted with depleted energy reserves and body condition after their amazing flight. We can all protect migratory birds whether they are nesting, resting, or stopping to refuel on their long trip by:

• Observing them from a distance

• Choosing a location away from them for your activities such as fishing or boating Keeping your dogs on a leash

• Avoiding driving on the shore

Community Garden

Thank you to all those who came down to make our first two working bees a success!

Despite the windy, wet weather, we were able to put all the garden beds together and lay out where they are going to go.

In September we are planning to hold a working bee on Tuesday 16 September to plant seedlings and continue with garden bed maintenance, as well as plan our Open Day, which we are looking at having in November.

In August, we were able to run a successful fundraiser at Bunnings Gympie, to raise funds to go towards the purchase of items for the garden. We thank Bunnings for their continued support.

If you would like to be involved in this great community project or find out more, contact Hannah on 0409 787 240.

Rainbow Beach packs kindness by the Boxful Operation Christmas Child – Thank You

ASMALL GROUP of locals set an ambitious target of 50 boxes of treats and essentials for children in need located in poor and war-torn countries through Operation Christmas Child.

The Rainbow Beach community has packaged and sent 56 boxes filled with toys, toiletries, school supplies, and fun gifts for dispatch in October to bring joy to children at Christmas. We humbly asked for help from our community and were overwhelmed with the support of our

kind and generous locals.

Thank you to those who packaged up a box, provided items for inclusion, donated money to cover shipping costs, or gave of their time to pack the boxes. We are so grateful for your contributions. Please be assured that every donation has been gratefully received and is on its way to make a child happy at Christmas.

Carmen Smith, the president and musical director of CCO, shares that the orchestra “not only brings members together in person, but creates a space for mental and spiritual connection with each other and the audience”.

This connection, she says, “allows them to express, explore, and identify with a rich tapestry of cultures”.

This sense of community will be on full display at Classical Connections, where the orchestra, along with the other ensembles, will share a vibrant musical journey that brings people together through the universal language of music.

ABUSHY, slow growing tree of coastal rainforests. Riberry is known for its dense growth, brilliant pink shoots, and sweetly aromatic fruits that have a hint of cloves. For this reason, and the low number of seeds, this species has one of the most sought after fruits in the bushfood industry.

In the rainforest Riberry can grow to 30m tall. In the garden it grows in full sun or part shade can be pruned to a hedge, but is generally a small 5-10m tree with minor pruning.

Fruits are reportedly eaten by birds including figbirds and emu. Wanted Volunteers: Are you passionate about plants and eager to learn propagation techniques?
