Cooloola BioBlitz Joins the Fun
IN AN EXCITING crossover, this year’s STEAMzone at Rainbow Beach is being held on the same weekend as the 2025 Cooloola BioBlitz - a citizen science event where the community joins experts to document local biodiversity.
The BioBlitz, taking place 22-24 August, invites people of all ages to
join field surveys and contribute to real scientific research. It’s a perfect follow-on from STEAMzone, blending science, tech, and environmental awareness in the great outdoors.
Budding biologists can learn how to identify plants, insects, and fungi, and how this data helps protect our unique local ecosystems.

Reeling in Records at Fishing Classic
BLESSED WITH absolutely beautiful weather again this year, the Rainbow Beach Family Fishing Classic & Expo 2025 was our biggest event in 38 years, regardless of which metric it’s measured by.
Over 700 competitors vied for nearly half a million dollars worth of cash and prizes provided by 83 incredible sponsors.
On the final night of the weeklong event, in another first, two
boats were given away, including an incredible $75k boating package to a very happy Joel Wrafter and family.
It was an outstanding effort all around, including from our wonderful volunteers, who really are the backbone of the event.
The dates for next year’s event are already locked in, so mark your calendars 14 to 20 June 2026, and keep an eye out for our early bird offers which will be released in the lead up to Christmas.

A familiar face behind the desk: Barb Rees Joins Rainbow Cares
Elisa Mele
IF YOU’VE SPENT any time in Rainbow Beach over the past 25 years, chances are you know Barb Rees, or at least spotted her zipping around in her beloved 1971 VW Fastback, affectionately named Veronica.
Known for her tireless work ethic, quick wit, and deep love of community, Barb has worn many hats (and uniforms) in local businesses, often juggling several roles at once. And now, Rainbow Cares is thrilled to welcome her to the team.
Barb moved to Rainbow Beach in 2000, a milestone that makes it easy to remember how long she’s called this coastal paradise home.
“What’s not to love? It’s magic,” she says. “The people are friendly, it’s still small enough to know most of the people that live here.
“We have an amazing beach, incredible natural attractions, and it’s just a short barge trip to one of the most unique islands in the world.”
Barb’s favourite thing? “Walking from the main beach south towards Double Island, it’s so good for the soul.”
When asked how she came to join Rainbow Cares, Barb says it was a conversation with Tamara that got her thinking. “The more I thought about it, the more it appealed to me. Being involved with people and helping them is right up my alley.”
For Barb, ‘care’ is a way of life. “Caring for the environment, your family, and the people who need looking out for it’s all important.
“It’s said it takes a village to bring up a child, but I believe it also takes a village to care for the older members of our small town and make sure they feel loved and valued.”
Whether it’s sharing a cuppa, lending a hand, or simply being present, Barb brings a rare kind of presence. “Just being there, no matter what, is what it’s all about.”
And of course, no story about Barb would be complete without a mention of Holly, the famously snobby and beautiful cat who stole the internet’s heart during lockdown.
“She became famous during Covid when I started a daily post on Facebook called Where’s Holly, like Where’s Wally, except you had to find a big fat white cat in the photo,” Barb laughs. “It was a bit of fun when there wasn’t a lot of joy around.”
Holly, it turns out, remains a celebrity in town. “She’s very, very beautiful… and very, very selective about who she associates with,” Barb jokes. “I’m not one of the chosen ones.”
From her sewing machine to her steering wheel to her generous heart, Barb Rees brings colour, and a deep care for her community wherever she goes. We’re lucky to have her on board at Rainbow Cares.

Upcoming Rainbow Beach Community Centre EVENTS
THE RAINBOW BEACH Community Centre has been very busy so far this year with a variety of regular and special occasion activities keeping the volunteers on their toes.
The pace is set to heat up even more with some hugely exciting events lined up over the coming months, including the Cooloola Bioblitz2025 and STEAMzone Twilight Science Market in August, the massive This Is Livin Fest in November, and Ash Grunwald in December.
And if that’s not enough excitement, the planning continues for the centre’s big silver anniversary bash to be held late in October.
President Jed Elmer believes that there is a real upbeat vibe happening among the community centre’s many members and volunteers as the momentum gathers towards the big celebration.
“We will be contacting all our members soon asking for stories and photos relating to their involvement with the centre over the years,” he said.
“We want to ensure that the hard work and dedication of those who forged the path to where we are now are shown the acknowledgement and appreciation that they deserve.”
Phil, Jodie, and Ron were on hand at the July markets to chat to interested locals about joining the SES. Stop by the SES stall at upcoming markets if you are interested in finding out more.
Local SES Recruitment Drive
IT WAS GREAT to see our local SES representatives at the Rainbow Beach July markets.

There are courses available in every area of modern disaster response including:
First Aid and CPR Radio Communication
Use of chainsaws, drones and other rescue equipment
The team will be attending the markets over the coming months and encourage all interested locals to visit their stall to obtain more information on signing up, or please phone Ron on 0408 287 499.

Rita Marigliani RAINBOW BEACH MARKETS VOLUNTEER
THERE’S SOMETHING special about market mornings in Rainbow Beach - the smell of sizzling sausages, fresh produce, hot coffee, the buzz of live music, the colourful stalls, and the friendly faces.
The Rainbow Beach Markets are proudly run by volunteers, with all stallholder fees going directly toward the upkeep of the Rainbow Beach Community Hall, as well as supporting local events and community needs. It’s a true community effort that brings people together month after month.
A big thank you goes to the RAINBOW BEACH HOTEL for their ongoing support of the community market sausage sizzle. Thanks to their generosity, more of the proceeds from every sausage sold now goes straight back to the running of the Hall.
Held on the second Saturday of each month from 7am to 12pm at the Rainbow Beach Community Hall the markets are more than just a place to shop - they’re a chance to catch up with friends over breakfast, enjoy live local music, and pick up fresh fruit & veggies, fresh bread, and handmade goods. Many of our stallholders are long-time favourites, but there’s always something new to discover.
It’s also the perfect time to find out what’s happening at the Community Hall - just drop by the yellow CIRS (Community Information & Resource
Service) tent for a friendly chat with our volunteers.
Whether you’re a local or a visitor, the Rainbow Beach Markets are full of heart, flavour, and community spirit. We’d love to see you there!
Interested in Running a Stall?
We welcome new stallholders! If you sell handmade goods, produce, crafts, clothing, art, bric-a-brac or something unique, the Rainbow Beach Market is a fantastic opportunity to connect with the community and showcase your work.
To apply for a stall or find out more, email rainbowbeachmarkets@gmail. com for details.
Looking to Lend a Hand?
As the markets continue to grow, we’re always looking for more volunteers. Whether you’ve recently moved to town or have lived here for years, getting involved is a great way to meet people and be part of a much-loved community event.
No experience is needed, and even an hour or two makes a difference.
If you’d like to get involved, contact the Rainbow Beach Markets at rainbowbeachmarkets@gmail.com, or speak to the volunteers at the yellow CIRS tent on market day. We’d love to welcome you to the team!

P&C News

WELCOME BACK to Term 3! It has been wonderful having our students back and hearing all about their school holiday adventures. It sounds like everyone enjoyed a well-deserved break and had lots of fun. This semester is already shaping up to be very busy with lots of fun and exciting opportunities planned for Semester Two.
Late last term we hosted the Small School Athletics Carnival with both Wolvi SS and Kia Ora SS coming to Rainbow Beach SS for a day. An event such as this is important to celebrate our school culture and promote healthy competition and positive relationships between our nearby schools beyond just our K’Gari and Cooloola sporting houses.
Several Rainbow Beach SS students made qualifying times and invited to the District carnival. We would like to thank Ms Kylie Summers for the countless time and effort she puts into planning for the sporting carnival. It truly was a fantastic day the students thoroughly enjoyed.
At the end of last term, the year 5s and 6s were invited to the University of Sunshine Coast – Gympie campus for an open day. This day showcased career options that are offered through the university both at the Gympie campus and Sunshine Coast. Their day began in the science lab – biological division, where we
looked at animal tracks, bones, photographs, and listened to calling sounds to determine which animals these ‘clues’ belonged to. We then headed outside to participate in a small obstacle course that required dragging a victim to safety in a QLD Police exhibit.
A popular room was the robotics department and had the pleasure of watching their ‘pet’ robot dog. He was able to manoeuvre in many ways and we learnt about the roles that robots can play in our evolving world.
Next, we were immersed in the ways of town planning and each student sat at a computer to design a town. It was a great opportunity for students to see and experience many career pathways that they may not have otherwise considered as they prepare themselves for high school study in the coming years.
Finally, our term ended with Karaoke and Pizza Day hosted by the P&C. The students showed courage, strength, and some musical talent as they performed in front of the school.
Karaoke was followed by pizzas – I think there might have been a secret challenge amongst the older students as to how much they could eat! We are very grateful to our P&C for their support in organising and coordinating the Karaoke for the last day of Term 2. We also wish to thank Rainbow Beach IGA for their generous Community Chest donation which allows events like this to be provided.
Above: The Small School Athletics Carnival was a huge success! Right: Year 5&6 students thoroughly enjoyed the USC-Gympie open day.
During the winter holidays, OSHC was open 5 days a week due to its high demand. It was a fantastic holiday program and the kids had so much fun making memories, exploring new activities and making friends in a safe and engaging environment.
We are very grateful for the support of our community and are pleased to be able to offer this service to families who are often busy working during the holiday period.
If you would like to enrol your child into OSHC, contact us directly on 0480 501 870 or email oshcrainbowbeach@ gmail.com. Alternatively, enrol online, the link is also on our P&C Facebook page. Our regular hours of operation are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 2.30pm-5.30pm and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 8.00am-4.00pm during school holidays.
Looking ahead, the P&C are gearing up for raffles throughout August and are looking for volunteers to help out. Raffles will be held Friday and
Saturday nights at the Rainbow Beach Sports Club and the first Saturday of the month at the Rainbow Beach Hotel. If you can spare a bit of time, we’d love your help!
We also invite all parents and community members to our P&C Meetings. It’s a great way to stay connected, share ideas and support our school. New faces are always welcome.

Rainbow Beach DroughtRunners Report

OLLOWING ON FROM last month’s report, we are still providing financial support to the charity BlazeAid in the flood areas of western Queensland and the mid-north coast of NSW.
Tony Stewart another $2,500 making $15,000 in western Queensland. Many of these Western Queenslanders support the Cooloola Coast for holidays so we are repaying their goodwill, with many unfortunately now not being able to afford a holiday for years. There have already been 14 Suicides since the floods.
The clean up and fencing in western Queensland will continue well into next year, and our finances go to BlazeAid to feed the volunteers - who are mostly retirees over 70 years of age.

I was back in Rainbow Beach in midJuly, picking up a load of donated supplies to deliver to the BlazeAid camps at Jundah, Isisford, Yaracka, maybe one other. It is a long haul out there so while there I will give a hand,

If there are any other volunteers or caravanners that can help please contact BlazeAid direct OR myself as many more hands are needed.
I wish to thank this month Wayne Kerle for his 10c returns, Arthur with the collection tin at the Tin Can Bay Bakery ($255), and all others that have donated. Thank you Bill Neil of Tin Can Bay for the wonderful homemade toys that I will deliver.

I received the offer of all furniture and whitegoods from the owners of a house in Tin Can Bay so hopefully we can get that delivered to the flood area in NSW; as of today many houses are unlivable. Heart Foundation Walking is excited to be teaming up again this year with the Jean Hailes Foundation for Women’s Health, as we celebrate Women’s Health Week 2025 (1-5 September). The week is Australia’s largest event that focusses on the health and wellbeing of women and girls; each day focusing on a different health topic.
Women’s Health Week will be packed with powerful stories, practical health information and plenty of ways to be involved. Check out www.jeanhailes.org.au to register. In the meantime, there are lots of health topics to explore online: www. jeanhailes.org.au/health-a-z.
I recently delivered Heart Foundation Walking flyers to the Cooloola Medical Centres in Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Cove plus other health-related centres including local pharmacies. These ‘Walking Wins’ flyers relate to our HF Walking groups on the Cooloola Coast with our meeting locations, days, and times.
The Heart Foundation has released new resources about walkable neighbourhoods and how they’re linked to improved cardiovascular health. While most people understand the importance of physical activity for heart health, you may not be aware of the role our neighbourhoods play in shaping those healthy behaviours.
Walkable communities - where walking is easy, enjoyable and a natural choice - are linked to significantly better cardiovascular outcomes. Research shows that people who live in walkable neighbourhoods are 1.5 times more
likely to achieve sufficient levels of physical activity; and are 2.8 times more likely to have a healthy cardiovascular health profile than people who live in areas where walking is unsafe, inconvenient or difficult.
Walkable neighbourhoods are those where the local environment makes it safe, comfortable and convenient to walk; where walking is enjoyable and pleasant; and where it’s something you want and choose to do.
Walkable local neighbourhoods are good for your heart! Lucky Tin Can Bay!

Help Us Commemorate Vietnam Veterans’ Day in Tin Can Bay
Ross Carruthers
PLANNING IS WELL underway for the Vietnam Veterans’ Day commemorations in Tin Can Bay to be held on Sunday 18 August.
We commemorate Vietnam Veterans’ Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. We remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to the Australians who served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War, as well as those who were left behind.
The Vietnam War was Australia’s longest military engagement of the 20th Century. The arrival of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam in South Vietnam during July
and August 1962 marked the start of Australia’s involvement in the war.
By the time the war ended, almost 60,000 Australians served during a decade of conflict between 1962 and 1972. About 3,000 Australians were wounded and 524 died during their service or as a result of that service.
This year’s Vietnam Veterans’ Day specifically honors the veterans who served in the Vietnam War and particularly recognizes the 50th anniversary of the last Australian troop withdrawal, the Embassy Guard.
Commemorations will commence with a service at 11am at Anzac Memorial Park, Tin Can Bay, with veterans and the general community invited to attend. After the service everyone is invited back to the RSL for camaraderie and nibbles.

Each Probus Club arranges its own outings to suit the members - it can be as simple as meeting at a local cafe for coffee and a chat to taking part in a group tour overseas. Our members enjoy getting together to catch up with the local news and happenings.

Probus originated in the United Kingdom, then spread to New Zealand and Australia (1976) and the name is derived from the first three letters of ‘PROfessional’ and ‘BUSiness’ as it was originally instituted for retiring members of Rotary, but is now open to all retired and semi-retired members of the community. Clubs

Tin Can Bay Lions bring laughter and lasting change
THE MONTHLY Tin Can Bay Lions Club meeting is always a highlight on members’ calendars, not just for the usual meeting formalities, but for the laughs and fellowship shared over lunch.
July’s get-together was filled with fun, especially during the member challenge which was a quirky game where participants had to draw a picture based on a sketch traced on their back. What started as a hand somehow became a blob person, then a birthday cake, before ending up as a tree!
The What’s in the Lion riddle also kept everyone guessing: “I have a
neck but no head, a body but no legs. I can hold water but I am not a pool.”
The Club is still seeking blue items for our Mental Health Project in October. These can be cloth, wool, or any material that can get wet and withstand the weather for a week.
We are also proud to be part of the Lions Green Canopy Project, encouraging the planting of native species. This forms part of the Cathy House Gardens Native Transition Project. If you’re not using the two free trees from your rates notice, please consider donating them to the project via Cooloola City Farm Nursery.
Excitingly, Cathy House will soon

AUGUST!? Before we know it, we’ll be up the point for the weekend for Memorial!
Although it was wet and chilly on the day of our Club Rounds, we had a great turn out. The points are accumulating and the competition is pretty tight in some of the categories!
These Club Rounds are not just about the competition though, they’re a chance to build our community and have a family friendly beach morning.
The committee certainly appreciates the effort put in by members who attend and always lend a helping hand, we have a wonderful Club.
In July we incorporated Meat Tray raffles into our Local’s BBQ, with two draws, one at 5pm and the second
throughout dinner service. We think this worked really well for the Club and its volunteers. We thank Dave for his continued support.
Long time member of the Club, Joel Mahon, lovingly handcrafted a frame for our logo which is now proudly hung in the Pool Room at the Rainbow Beach Hotel.
Thanks boys from Cooloola Roofing for being there at the perfect time and assisting us in hanging!

Dragons On Fire
Toni Archer
ORMAN POINT in Tin Can Bay
was a hive of activity with hotly contested Dragon Boat racing over the weekend 12 and 13 July 2025.
Following cancellation of both days last year due to squalls, all Dragons were elated to see the Norman Point foreshore bathed in sunshine for the final round of the Wide Bay Series and Sunday’s Cooloola Dragons’ Regatta.
Wide Bay teams from 1770, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Cooloola, and a combined Rockhampton/ Hervey Bay team have rotated hosting Regattas in the Wide Bay series, from May to September, over the 15 years of competition.
For safety and to keep the double ramps free for boating traffic, dragon boats were launched from the Yacht Club ramp, with volunteer members of Sailability, Coast Guards, and Danny Howlett’s boats on water.
Competitive spirits ran high with the perfect weather conditions, with many close finishes over the 200m course. And jubilation ran high when 1770 emerged the victors; Red Rocks 2nd; and Bundy Dragons 3rd.
The ‘Diamond Dash’ fun “Dash for Cash” challenge race, sponsored by Shellie Bennett Elders Real Estate, was the initiative of the late Coach Gayle Barnett, which consists of two boats contesting a time-based race in opposite directions.
Cooloola Yellow team, with talented Sweep Russell at the helm, showed their determination and grit and
reigned supreme; 2nd Brisbane Typhoons; and 3rd Hervey Bay.
The foreshore became a blaze of colour on Sunday, as a decorated Tent City emerged in keeping with the contesting teams fancy dress theme. Paddlers had added exhilaration when teams performed hilarious skits to portray their outfits.
Sponsored by Clare Real Estate: Winner Sunshine Coast Dragons Abreast (Silver Strokers); 2nd Brisbane River Dragons (Sunflowers); 3rd Bribie Island Dragons Abreast (All about the Breast); 4th 1770 (That’s Amore).
Races were strongly contested by the 13 participating teams, and again
and fully licensed technician/s.
the dedication and camaraderie of all team members contributed to an exciting and friendly day of competition.
Damage to one boat extended the competition time, forcing the cancellation of the Air Guitar fun
competition, initiated by John Archer. At the conclusion of the day, nine attractively presented raffle prizes, donated by local businesses and members were drawn.
The fantastic weekend of racing, organised and coordinated by Event Director Sandra Wooster and ably assisted by many dedicated members, was rewarded with accolades and enthusiasm by the participating teams.
Sincere thanks were extended to members who helped on the day, with a special shout out to Cr Jess Milne who, at short notice, filled the MC role in the absence of John Archer.

Tin Can Bay hosts successful Pro-Am
AT THE TIN CAN BAY Country Club in mid-July we held the Konami Gaming Pro-Am, which was an exciting event for the Club.
There were 52 professionals and 102 amateurs participating and for once in July it was a dry day.
The event was run as two shotgun starts, one at 7am and the second at 12 noon. Nathan Barbieri from NSW won the Pro section of the event, with a 9 under score of 63 including an eagle on the 4th.
Equal 2nd with 7 under score of 65 was Nathan Page from NSW and Blake Perkins from QLD. Coming in equal 4th was Alex Simpson from NSW, who was last year’s winner, and James Tauariki from New Zealand, who was having his first start in a Pro-Am event and started off with three birdies in succession.
The professionals commented on the presentation of the course, particularly what great condition the fairways are in. They also complimented the food and expressed that they look forward to returning next year.
The amateur winners:
Men: A Grade - Dale Long; B GradeViv Ronlund; C Grade - Peter Hayward. Ladies: Diane Neill.
And winner for the Sponsors Group was Mark Ramsay. This the first Pro-Am we have for the year and will be followed by the
Associate Professionals in October and the Legends in December.
Personally from playing in this Pro-Am I can add that it was a fabulous day and encourage more amateurs to participate.
It is also a credit to James Taylor, our Director of Golf, who did such a fine job organising the success of the day and presenting the winners.
The next day we started our greens replacement program and members will find the third green is a temporary green for a couple of months as the old green is being rebuilt.
The club decided to change the green to be rebuilt due to the fifteen still being too wet to rebuild.

Tin Can Bay Fishing Club Report
G’DAY ALL. How’s the bay been?
Absolutely beautiful days albeit a bit busy, but that’s just the holidays and the visitors enjoying what we have every day.
There have been some very nice fish caught by club members and the local fishos as well. The squid are coming back and good sizes which is great to see because they are good fun for the kids and adults as well, however they’re not in the numbers of recent years.
They take a bit of finding as they aren’t in the usual haunts but are happy to take a jig if the Toads don’t get it first. Persistence is the key.
Our club’s first Big Squid Week for the year was run and although it was pretty wet weather, some quality specimens came aboard. The event was won by Barry Nalder with a couple of very respectable sizes amongst them.
Early this month some of our club members entered the Sandy Straits Family Fishing Classic.
Our club’s Cod Whisperer, Ron Cox, didn’t disappoint with a donkey of a Cod measuring 96cm which also won him the species class in the competition. Great job Ron.
Malcolm Kay also presented a handsome Slatey in the Reef Fish class only to be pipped at the post. Great work guys.
The fish of the month went to Ian Smith with a sweet 78cm Slatey Bream, with Malcolm Kay snapping at his heels also with some quality Slateys. Our junior fisho for the month was young Eli Morrison with a very nice 63cm Trevally. It’s terrific to see our juniors amongst the fish and they will be worth watching in the future.
The Club’s two-day competition was won by Barry Nalder, registering 547.8 points with some quality Whiting and Flathead for the haul. Some of our members ventured out on the beach fishing day out at Teewah and while the action was slow most of the day, the fish came on the bite late with a fish cast towards the end of day.
Rita Leong managed her PB Whiting with a 38cm specimen going home for dinner. Other notable catches by Chris Murphy were some cracker Dart and more Whiting.
Another working bee was held under the guidance of John Blackman and quite a lot of club members attended with rakes and hedge trimmers and snips rearing to go, which was terrific to see and this made the tasks required a lot easier, and it also was somewhat of a social day as well and
the grounds look amazing, thank you.
The club also held another workshop evening late in the month with the topic being Bow Mount motors, creating waypoints and spot locking/ anchoring on them then fishing those waypoints.
Thank you to the presenters and all who interacted to make this night as memorable as it was.
Coming up in August some of the members are travelling to Fraser Island to chase Tailor with the Hervey Bay Amateur Fishing Club guys, so our best wishes for a successful trip go with them.
That’s about the news for the month so to all, enjoy this great time of year to get out there on the water and keep lines tight and your rods bent and be safe.
Barry Nalder
‘Cod Whisperer’ Ron Cox won the species class at the Sandy Straits Family Fishing Classic with this 96cm Cod.
Mal Kay congratulates double winner Barry Nalder, who took out both the squid event and the two-day competition.
Rita Leong snagged a PB 38cm Whiting.
Eli Morrison was awarded junior fisho for the month thanks to this very nice 63cm Trevally.
Tin Can Bay P-10 School
Year 5 explore future pathways at UniSC Careers Expo
THE YEAR 5 STUDENTS from Tin Can Bay School recently took part in an exciting excursion to the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) Gympie Campus for this year’s Careers Expo.
The day was packed with hands-on activities, inspiring workshops, and thought-provoking demonstrations designed to open students’ eyes to a world of future career possibilities.
Students put their skills to the test in a variety of hands-on sessions, including designing online towns, solving scientific puzzles to identify animals, learning proper handwashing techniques at the
nursing station, and tackling a police training-style obstacle course.
But the undeniable highlight of the day was meeting Gizmo the Robotic Dog - who happily shook paws and stole everyone’s hearts!
Throughout the day, students engaged with UniSC staff asking curious questions about university life and the journey toward different careers. The message was clear: dream big and never stop learning.
The experience left the Year 5s buzzing with excitement and armed with new ideas about the possibilities that await them in the years ahead.

Athletics Carnival A Big Hit!
HELD OVER TWO glorious winter days on 23 and 24 June, our school athletics carnival was a fantastic celebration of fun, fitness, and community spirit.
Students competed in track and field events including javelin, shot put, long jump, and triple jump, while our younger students enjoyed modified activities such as hobby horse races, sack jumping, and tug-o-war.
The P&C kept bellies full with a sizzling BBQ, and the school choir
added a sweet touch with delicious cupcakes that kept energy levels high. A wonderful turnout of parents and carers added to the excitement, cheering on students from the sidelines.
As always, the highly anticipated relay between Wallu and Tuncun brought the crowd to its feet. After two huge days of competition, Wallu emerged as the overall winning team of the carnival. Age champions are as follows:
AGE GIRLS BOYS
5 years Grace, Candice Callaghan Rafferty

Winter Weeds
Gympie Regional Council is urging landholders to act now to control five high-risk invasive weed species that are active during the winter months. The key winter weeds causing concern are: Fireweed, African Tulip Tree, Mother of Millions, Singapore Daisy, and African Boxthorn.
These weed species can harm native bushland, reduce pasture quality, poison livestock, and outcompete garden plants, impacting everyone from farmers to backyard gardeners.
Winter is a crucial time to control these species before they spread and become more difficult to manage in spring. Early, targeted action not only reduces herbicide use but also protects surrounding vegetation.
Council will be sharing ways to help manage these weeds over winter, keep an eye out on social media or for more information on how to identify and control priority weeds, visit www. gympie.qld.gov.au/weed-management.
Rainbow Beach Mural
In early July, community members came together to paint a mural that will be displayed on the Phil Rogers Park amenities block. Participants
of all ages from 5-70 years old helped to paint panels that will come together to create a vibrant and collaborative artwork.
Locals enjoyed the experience and it was a great atmosphere, with everyone loving the ‘Retro Postcard’ design with reference to the Phil Rogers Fruit Stall on the surfboards as a homage to him and his family.
Even tourists from Japan and Germany participated, as well as grey nomads returning to Rainbow Beach and the local member and her family.
The initiative was delivered by Heart and Soul Sisters Creative Experiences in partnership with Gympie Regional Council.
This project was made possible by the Regional Arts Development Fund, a partnership between the Queensland Government and Gympie Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
Overnight Parking Patrols
As previously reported, patrols targeting overnight parking at Griffin Esplanade beach carpark and nearby camping areas commenced in June. Over a two-week period, the patrols had a noticeable impact on reducing camping activity and a decrease in violations was observed as news of the patrols spread.
Council officers educated visitors and issued 16 warnings, 23 parking tickets, and 35 information notices and as a result, there were no instances of repeat offenders during the patrol period.
Other popular overnight parking areas were patrolled during this time, including Kirchner Avenue, Wide Bay Esplanade, Rainbow Beach Road, Carlo Point, Spectrum Street, Surf Club carpark, and the QPWS Visitor Centre.
TRADING HOURS
7 days a week
Mon - Fri 7.30am to 5pm
Saturdays 7.30am to 3pm
Sundays 7.30am to 1pm
The patrols and the change to parking restrictions at Rainbow Beach have successfully reduced overnight parking activities in the area. The patrols have created significant deterrence, largely due to a combination of strong enforcement, public education and increased awareness.
Council will continue to monitor activity and enforcement actions to further prevent overnight parking in the Cooloola Coast region.

Coastcare –Powered By Community
Cooloola Coastcare
COOLOOLA COASTCARE appreciates the continued support of the community. Gympie Regional Council, Rainbow Beach Sports Club, Trivia Time and now Containers for Change Noosa have come onboard.
The Containers for Change Noosa recycle pod has been set up at the Second Cutting Noosa North Shore.
Campers enjoying the beautiful Teewah Beach can now donate their recycle cans and bottles via this drop bin ensuring the ongoing beach cleanup, turtle care and monitoring, and shorebird monitoring along this beach.
Cooloola Coastcare projects are many and varied from BioBlitzes, Water Quality monitoring to Habitat Regeneration.
To view the full list, visit the website: www. cooloolacoastcare.org.au
All funds raised ensure the ongoing projects in our area.
Great news, Cooloola Coastcare has launched the Cooloola Birds of Interest pocket guide featuring the 88 birds of our area.
It is available from Rainbow Beach Post Office, Rainbow Beach Community Centre, and Rainbow Beach QPWS Office. In Tin Can Bay they are available from the Post Office, Newsagent and Cooloola City Farm.
Wildflower season is nearly here, and the Cooloola Wildflowers and Walks pocket guide is also a must-have.
Thank you, community, for your support.
TCB P&C Hard at Work Behind the Scenes
F
UNDRAISING isn’t always about BBQs! The Tin Can Bay P&C is working hard behind the scenes, applying for grants to help run events and improve spaces within the school so keep an eye out for updates on these.
Keeping school activities affordable is one of the P&C’s top priorities. Recently, $2,500 was contributed to support the Year 3/4, Year 5/6, and Year 7 camps, with another $2,000 allocated to the Prep-2 excursion in August.
THYME-LEAF HONEY-MYRTLE.
Native shrub with fine, aromatic foliage and unique fringed purple flowers. Flowers often, up to 8 months of the year. Thrives in most soils including wet soils.
A compact, hardy, low growing shrub, height up to approx. 1m x 3m wide. Useful in rockeries or group plantings. Full sun to partial shade.
These subsidies wouldn’t be possible without the hundreds of volunteer hours contributed by parents, students, and community members, whether it’s helping at events, donating goods, assisting with paperwork or simply showing up to support students.
A special shout-out goes to Laurel from All Bout Coffee, who donated $50 from coffee van sales at the Athletics Carnival, thank you for helping make a difference!
Wanted Volunteers: Are you passionate about plants and eager to learn propagation techniques? Perhaps you already have experience with nursery work?
We welcome your help at Cooloola City Farm Nursery. Volunteering with us is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge and contribute to our community. Plus, we are Centrelink approved.
The next big fundraiser is the Monty’s Colour Fun Run on Friday 19 September. Students will be creating online profiles to seek donations from family, friends, and the community. All profits go directly back into student experiences and towards larger school infrastructure projects. New members are always welcome!
To join the P&C, drop into the school office or email us for a digital application on pandc@ tincanbayss.edu.eq.au
