WOW!! WHAT A month for nature in Cooloola. August saw a pair of exciting science events by Cooloola Coastcare for natural science and community engagement.
The Cooloola Bioblitz is an event where scientists come to town and lead groups of ‘Citizen Scientists’, the public, that is, out on field trips to survey all the living things in Cooloola…plants, animals, insects, fungi.
A record number of observations were achieved this year despite the event being held to a manageable size of 139 participants.
Results: 4809 observations recorded of 1108 species (A great result for a 48 hour event)
New discoveries: Several spiders unknown to science were found. We are waiting for confirmation from the Herbarium on the identity of the rare moss which is the first record for Cooloola and the first record in over 100 years north of Stradbroke Island. We recorded our first owls and our new wildlife cameras found lots of small mammals too stealthy for the humans to spot.
The 15 scientists who were in town for the BioBlitz then did ‘overtime’ at the STEAMzone Twilight Science Market, a fun, hands-on science event for
the community that draws over 400 attendees from Hervey Bay, towns in the west of the Gympie region and the Sunshine Coast as well as locals.
Everyone was engaged with the many science activities and scientists to meet. Young and old were celebrating National Science Week with the marine touch pool, the reptiles and amphibians, making paper and bubbles, searching for Water Bugs, immersing in sensory play about our Australian animals, dressing up, collecting free plants, printing swag bags with Aussie animals art, checking out Council’s Biosecurity management, meeting the park rangers and the Butchulla Land and Sea Rangers, and so much more.
Thanks to all the community for helping with the setup of the market, the loan of tents and lights, and for coming along to make the event a great success. The wonderful volunteers of Cooloola Coastcare deserve recognition for the many hours put into the logistics and the BBQ.
Thanks also to our funders Gympie Regional Council Environment Programs Grants, Inspiring Australia Queensland, FIDO the Watchdog of K’gari. A special mention and thanks also to the wonderful Rainbow Beach Sports Club who looked after
us with delicious meals and the Rainbow Beach Surf Club who arrived with tents, tables and chairs and volunteers to help. Such a great community effort.

Army Makes Waves at Rainbow Beach
RESIDENTS AND VISITORS to Rainbow Beach witnessed a unique and impressive sight in September as around 50 soldiers from 35th Water Transport Squadron descended on the area for Exercise Surfing Penguin. Based out of Ross Island Barracks in Townsville, the unit conducted a week of advanced watercraft training using the Lighter, Amphibious Resupply Cargo - 5 tonne (LARC-V) vehicles and F470 Zodiac vessels,
designed to operate in both land and surf conditions.
The LARC-V, a trusted workhorse of the Army since the 1960s, proved its versatility yet again. Its large, wide tyres allowed the 13-tonne vehicle to move effortlessly across the soft beach sand, while its amphibious capabilities shone in the surf.
Of the four LARCs used during the exercise, one was adapted for surf response with its sides removed,

increasing ease of access for emergency situations during training for water entry, towing and rescue.
Soldiers had the opportunity to operate three Zodiacs (F470s) alongside the LARCs, gradually building from calm seas to challenging big surf conditions as the week progressed. The goal was clear: develop competence and confidence in manoeuvring both types of watercraft in real-world surf environments.
Among the group were participants in the Army Indigenous Development Program (AIDP), who are currently undertaking a 17-week training course that includes a TAFE Certificate II in Skills for Work and Study. For them, the exercise was more than just a military drill, it was a chance to connect training with meaningful, hands-on experience.
Although Defence medics were onsite and ready to respond, the week passed without major incidents, and was a positive result for the safety of all personnel.
Local community members were warm and welcoming, with many taking the opportunity to speak with soldiers and learn about the exercise.

P&C News
HAPPY HOLIDAYS! It’s hard to believe that Term 3 is over and there is only 1 term remaining this year. The students and staff have all put in an extraordinary effort with both planning and learning.
We are very pleased with what the students have achieved and it’s been incredible watching them grow. The students and staff are currently enjoying a well-deserved break, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back.
In Week 9, the Year 5 and 6 students ventured to Hervey Bay for an overnight camp. They had an adventure-packed two days. After arriving in Hervey Bay, the students
went to the cinemas to watch Sketch, a movie about a girl whose drawings came to life.
They then drove down to Point Vernon for lunch and a wander over the rock pools. The park on the Esplanade was a huge hit. With bellies full, the next venture was an escape room which proved difficult for some.
Problems to solve and clues to decipher, with 9 brains all working in different ways! We did not escape the room in the allotted hour, so some families may wish to return to see if they can crack all the codes. They then wrapped up the day with Ten Pin Bowling and pizza.
The following day saw them board
We all loved the recent visit from Opera Queensland, bringing a unique cultural experience to the school.
the Tasman Venture for a spectacular day on the water. They saw plenty of whales, each demonstrating different types of behaviours – resting, feeding, tail slapping, twisting and turning, and in playful pursuit.
The visibility was high and we could see the whales easily as they swam beside the boat and beneath.
All in all, it was a great two days.
We recently had a special visit from Opera Queensland and they performed The Adventures of Figaro. This lively and colourful production introduced students to the world of opera through a fun, fast-paced retelling of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville.
With just three performers, the cast brought an array of characters

to life through singing, acting, and dancing. Students were captivated as Figaro, the clever problem-solver, helped Count Almaviva and Rosina follow their dreams of starting a band and entering the Seville Singstravaganza-palooza-fest-athon.
The performance was filled with humour, energy, and music, making opera accessible and enjoyable for all ages. We are grateful to Opera Queensland for providing our students with this memorable cultural experience that sparked curiosity, creativity, and plenty of smiles!
In week 10, our school participated in the 2025 Broncos League Challenge in Gympie. Our team was made up from both Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay schools. This was the 20th year of this interschool competition, and our team did not disappoint.
We placed second in our pool, winning games against Gympie South SS, Jones Hill SS, St Pats Primary, Gympie West SS and we drew with Victory College before narrowly going down in the finals to One Mile and Chatsworth. Students played very well and we are proud of their efforts.
Upcoming, Term 4 has lots of exciting events planned which includes swimming, Prep/1 Excursion, Gala Days, leadership applications, Christmas Concert, transition days, parent information sessions, graduations, and more… Lots to do!
Spring has sprung and we are set for colourful times ahead! When Term 4 kicks off, it will be time to lace up those runners for our Fun Run Fundraiser on 22 October. Students are already busy gathering sponsors.
Beyond the fun, the run plays an important role in raising funds for school projects and activities - and this year we’ve set ourselves an exciting ‘goal posts’ goal to aim for!
The Fun Run is always a highlight, bringing our whole school community together. Families and supporters are encouraged to get involved — whether that’s sponsoring a student, cheering from the sidelines, or joining in the colourful fun on the day.
The P&C have also been working hard towards pulling everything together for the annual Christmas raffle. We are in the process of reaching out to businesses and gathering donations. We want to send a big thanks to those community
businesses who are supporting us with some very cool prizes! Throughout the holidays, we’re excited to welcome the local community and travelling families to our Spring Holidays Vacation Care Program, running from 22 September to 3 October from 8am – 4pm. Packed with creative activities, outdoor adventures, and new friendships, it’s the perfect way for kids to stay active, social, and inspired these holidays. To book a spot, contact the school office or visit our website — places won’t last long! Location: Rainbow Beach State School $100/day & CCS available! If you would like to enrol your child into OSHC, you can contact us directly on 0480 501 870 or email oshcrainbowbeach@gmail.com. Alternatively, you can enrol online, the link is also on our P&C Facebook page or via the QR Code. NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL: 2026 Enrolments
IT IS THAT TIME of year again where we start to prepare for the 2026 School Year.
Year 6 Transition to High School - Most of our Year 6 students have already been active with preparing for High School transition at their chosen schools. We will over the coming weeks and months keep parents informed on transition programs that we are made aware of.
Prep Students - We are excited to see how
seamlessly our current Kindy class will transition into Prep for next year. We have certainly witnessed how positively the program has supported the children to be comfortable with the place, people, and processes. This has ensured a much quicker settling period for many students. We are however planning to host parent information sessions and a revised parent handbook that will assist in supporting parents
and children throughout the journey. Kindy Enrolments - We are continuing to field expressions of interest for our Kindy Program. If you are aware of a family with eligible aged children, please encourage them to come and complete a registration/enrolment form. This will ensure that we can make necessary preparations and keep them abreast of any information sessions that are being planned.

Rainbow Beach History
ON 3 SEPTEMBER the Gympie Library put on a history talk and afternoon tea in the Community Hall which was attended by about 20 district residents.
In attendance was the longest permanent resident of Rainbow Beach, with land purchase in 1970; residents that met the Cherry Venture as it came ashore; another that has the rescue line fired out to the
crew to get ashore; ex-professional fishermen; those early residents heavily involved in getting the first church in Rainbow Beach.
We had daughters of the first two electricians here in Cooloola, another district farmer who had his first visit to the beach in 1954; and also attending was our ex-Deputy Mayor. Many apologies were received including our State Member Tony Perrett, and

Tin Can Bay RSL excited to be Planning for Upgraded Facilities
Ross Carruthers
T
HE TIN CAN BAY RSL Sub-branch is currently busy planning upgrades to provide veterans, their families and the Cooloola Coast community with fresh, modern, pleasant, and safe facilities to use and enjoy.
The proposed upgrades will include new floor coverings and furniture in our bar and verandah areas.
We are also looking at the installation of a covered outdoor deck for our licensed outdoor, dog-friendly area as well as upgrading the flooring in the Veterans Community Hall. Subject to the success of a grant application, all the upgrades could be in place by mid-2026.
I spotted Australian Army Veteran and ex-Sergeant Peter Scott at the Country Club after a recent round of golf. He said:
“Roscoe I’m really excited about these RSL upgrades you are looking at. So many of the people who attend the RSL are retired service people who prefer the company of likeminded folks to share stories with, and this often turns to long-term relationships.
“Your proposed vision will provide a lounge-room atmosphere that will add to its appeal in the modern arena.”
He added: “Many veterans, retirees and younger families are coming here to live, appreciating our coastal aspect and relaxed lifestyle.
“They are looking for venues to relax and enjoy the facilities – even bringing their dogs for a family day out! Great concept mate!”
I replied, “Well it’s all as a result of our many volunteers. Without them we wouldn’t have a Sub-branch. They have brought many of these ideas to the table.”

AFTER A VERY busy month in August, we have since quietened down as the main beneficiary of our fundraising efforts, the charity BlazeAid close down their fencing work camps in western Queensland. With temps getting to 35 degrees now, the work in the flood area will continue next year.
At present BlazeAid volunteer camps continue to be operated on the NSW East Coast but very soon the main camp will be just out of Foster.
If anyone can spare a few days there is still a lot of work to do in this area. Contact BlazeAid on 0418 990 267 or 0436 316 955.
“Well good luck with it all”, he said. “By the way how was your game today?”
I grinned – “How about we get back to the upgrades…”
If anyone is interested in the proposed upgrades to the Tin Can Bay RSL, come on down to our facility 3pm to 6 pm every day except Monday and have a chat to any of our many service or social members. They’ll be pleased to update you on what’s proposed.
After taking a big load of food supplies out to Isisford camp last month I am now back in Victoria to continue the disaster fundraising. The BlazeAid charity had spent $80,000 feeding volunteers in western Queensland, until Santos last week stepped in with a $75,000 donation. This month I must thank Wayne Kerle for his 10c return collections and if anyone else can donate to the 10c returns please contact me.
The Tin Can Bay Bakery - many thanks for having the donation tin in the bakery, with another $80 collected.
Till next month stay safe.

QCWA Country Kitchens Workshop a hit with Cooloola Coast Families
IN SEPTEMBER, the QCWA Virtual Branch’s Gabriella Field hosted a Country Kitchens Hands-on Nutrition Workshop at Tin Can Bay for the Cooloola Coast Home-Schooling Co-op.
Fifteen children and six mothers took part in the workshop, which introduced them to the QCWA Country Kitchens health promotion program and its Five Key Messages: add more fruit and vegetables, cook at home, check portion sizes, watch the sugar in drinks, and sit less, move more.
Before the cooking began, everyone received a Country Kitchens apron to keep, and the mothers each received a goodie bag filled with recipe booklets, brochures, and leaflets to take home.
With the support of their mums, the children then practiced essential knife skills. The older ones worked with potatoes while the younger children used bamboo knives and cheese slices. Gabriella was delighted to see how many children showed real confidence in the kitchen.
The budding cooks then divided into groups to prepare three recipes: modified Rainbow Muffin Frittatas, Healthy Sausage Rolls, and a
Stovetop Apple and Pear Crumble. Between dishes, the children enjoyed fun activities including ‘Spot the Difference in the Vegetables’ and a ‘Guess How Many Nuts in the Jar’ competition which was won by Dali, who took home a Dinosaur Foods cookbook.
By the end of the day, the food was a resounding success, with everyone enjoying the delicious results. Gabriella praised the children for their enthusiasm and good behaviour, and thanked the supportive mums whose help made the workshop run so smoothly.
For anyone who would like to join the QCWA but is unable to attend a local branch, there’s always the option of becoming part of the Virtual Branch. It offers all the benefits of a regular branch, but meetings are held online, making it flexible and accessible to members everywhere.

From Riddles to Real Help: Tin Can Bay Lions in Action
THE LIONS CLUB of Tin Can Bay knows how to mix fun with purpose! At our recent catch-up at the Sleepy Lagoon Hotel, there were plenty of laughs and delicious food to go around.
Members tackled the monthly brain teaser ‘What’s in the Lion?, this time with a riddle: “I have lots to say but never speak, I open but you cannot walk through me and I have a spine but no bones.”
Another highlight was the temporary tattoo challenge! Members picked from butterflies, monsters, planes, cars, motorbikes, bees, and mermaids and shared why their chosen tat spoke to them. A light-hearted and meaningful activity that sparked great conversations.
On the giving side, the Club stepped up once again to help those in need. Cystic Fibrosis Qld received a $500 donation, continuing a long tradition of support for this important cause. And when local rising sports star Jack Howlett needed help attending the State Athletics Championships in Townsville, members offered accommodation support so Jack could compete well-

Music to Make You Feel Good
THE COOLOOLA MUSIC CLUB is moving full steam ahead with fresh energy, new songs, and new faces joining all the time! Every Wednesday evening at the Tin Can Bay RSL Hall, from around 6pm to 9pm, the hall comes alive with music, laughter, and the joy of community.
Whether you’re a local or coming in from Gympie or the surrounding areas, you’re welcome to join in the fun - play, sing, or simply enjoy the live music.
Music is provided by our talented group of regulars: Pete on bass and percussion; Mike on guitar and vocals; Barry on guitar and vocals; and Trevor on keys. We’re often joined by other local musicians, so feel free to bring your instrument and join in, plug into the PA or an amp, or play solo - it’s your choice!
This isn’t karaoke - the music is played live.
Our singalong nights are all about sharing a common love of great music in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Bring your own favourite songs or choose from the setlistwe’ve got lyrics and chords provided for everyone.
There’s room for everyone, with no judgment at all. Whether you want to
sing with the band, perform your own piece, join in from your seat, or just relax and enjoy the music.
Thanks to our wonderful volunteers Karen H and Jackie, there’s a light supper with tea and coffee on offer during the night courtesy of a $5 donation from participants. Thanks also to Karen B for her work compiling folders, lyrics, and chords for everyone.
We play timeless anthems and sing-along favourites from The Beatles, The Eagles, Tom Petty, Bee Gees, Badfinger, America, The Doobie Brothers, Robbie Williams…and many more!
It’s the kind of music that lifts your spirits, stirs your soul, and brings people together. Singing in a room full of friendly, like-minded people is genuinely therapeutic, and the energy is something you’ll carry home with you.
Come and join us! Now in our second year at the Tin Can Bay RSL Hall, the Cooloola Music Club is growing - and we’d love you to be part of it. Whenever you feel like a happy midweek singalong, come on down and be part of something special. You never know who might show up - but you can be sure of a warm welcome and a great night of live music.
See you on Wednesday!

October is Probus Month
MEMBERS RECENTLY enjoyed the annual Probus Bowls and Games Day for the clubs of Gympie, GympieWidgee, Maryborough, and Cooloola Coast which takes place at the Tin Can Bay Country Club each year.
Clubs take turns to host it. After morning tea those playing bowls took to the greens and those playing board games and cards settled in for some fun, with lots of conversation and laughter. A buffet lunch preceded some quizzes and singing.
Our monthly Coffee and Chats
continue to be popular and there will be extra activity in October during Probus Month which coincides with Queensland Seniors Month, increasing social connection and

WELCOME TO JANEEN, our newest member of ‘One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay’ Heart Foundation Walking group. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the early group departs Tin Can Bay Bakery at 6.30am in spring; the later group at 7am.
‘Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers’ will have celebrated our fourth anniversary at our usual monthly boardwalk and picnic in Tin Can Bay on Friday 26 September. At the time of writing, we are unsure if other Heart Foundation Walking groups are joining our Cooloola Coast walkers.
We are hopeful that members of Bunnings Gympie will come down with Laura David, our Gympie Regional Council HF Walk Coordinator, to walk along our beautiful foreshore and enjoy our celebratory picnic at Norman Point.
Congratulations to our Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers Walk Organiser, Judy Beaton for wheelie walking 330 walks in the four years. We are proud of our leader who tells us where to go.
CC Wheelie Walkers leave the shopping centre bus shelter on Nautilus Drive at 7.30am, Mondays and Fridays during spring and autumn.

The small team ‘Cooloola Coast Walkers’, who Stepped Up for Heart, fundraising for the National Heart Foundation of Australia to fund vital research and support to stop heart disease, raised $1,634. Huge thanks to everyone who donated to the worthwhile cause, thereby encouraging us to keep stepping up for heart.
I did achieve my HFW goal of 1,000 officially recorded walks, before the end of August. Now I only have 433 walks before my next award! There are other members nearing significant walking goals of 100, 200, and 500 walks. I expect these will be accomplished before the beginning of October.
Celebrate a step towards a healthy mind, body and heart. Walk Yourself Happy! Why don’t you join us?
It’s free, fun and a great way to improve our physical, mental, social and emotional health. Queries, contact Judy Beaton 5486 2181 or myself, Maggie1Travers@gmail.com or 0400 756 615.

Brooke Bignell RAINBOW BEACH BOARDRIDERS
”IN LATE 1986, 14 year old Jamie ‘Spot’ Stone, a talented young surfer, along with his mates Grant Boyce and Brendan Weakley were bored and decided to organise a Surf Comp.
The first Surf Comp was held on Teewah Beach with 24 entrants and an onshore 3 foot swell. Entrants paid $2 entry and the contest raised $150 for the Rainbow Beach State School. The comp was won by Spot, narrowly beating Paul Poncini in second place and Danny Podmore in third.
Alec Pryde donated the first perpetual trophy in memory of his son Robbie Pryde, who passed away at 21 the year prior. The Robbie Pryde Memorial Surf Classic was born.
On the 20th October, 1986 a meeting was held at the Rainbow Beach Sports and Recreation Club to form the Rainbow Beach Boardriders Club. Dennis Parton was the contest organiser for 18 years.”

We are on the hunt for Boardriders History! Please send through memories, photos, and tall tales to rainbowbeachboardriders@gmail. com. We LOVE to see them and we are compiling a whole lotta history for the Club’s 40th birthday next year!

Rowing Club takes to the Water
AT TIME OF WRITING, the Tin Can Bay Coastal Rowing Club was working on the finishing touches to its first St Ayles skiff in preparation for its launch on 28 September. This will be an exciting milestone for the club.
Even more exciting will be the public use of the rowboat as we launch into a rowing program. If you are keen on some light exercise and fun on the water join up now – no experience is necessary.
The membership year runs from the 1 September to 31 August the following year so joining now gives you the benefit for almost an entire year. Club rowing is designed to cater for all ages and sporting ability from none/ hardly any to experienced. It is meant to be an enjoyable safe activity on the water and not a competition sport.
The club will be starting on the building of the second skiff almost immediately after the launch of its inaugural skiff. If rowing isn’t your thing but building something special is, drop by the green shed behind
the community hall on a Thursday or Saturday morning and check out what goes on and maybe lend a hand.
No experience is required to help in building the skiffs - take it from me, as I know. In taking part in the build from start to finish, I’ve seen the process and what’s involved in creating a beautiful craft that will bring joy to many people and I’ve gained some new knowledge and skills along the way.
On 6 September the TCB Coastal Rowing Club put its first skiff on display at the City Farm Open Day and it drew some keen interest. It was a successful day all round for all organisations having a presence there on the day.
Now our sights are firmly on our official launch - keep an eye out in next month’s paper to hear all about how it went. Keen to join the team?

Tin Can Bay Fishing Club Report
Barry Nalder
WELL HOW QUICK does a month go these days, well that was September and what a cool time on the water some of our members had. Our very own Marquis Chapman kicked off his Jack season with a lovely 46cm specimen from one of the local creeks.
Derek Andrews was out harassing the Cod with a 60cm-plus beauty coming over the side, and Club President Malcolm Kay boated a terrific 83cm Slatey Bream. Great work guys, nice to see these fish starting to show their faces again.
Also a couple of our club members, Chris Rippon and Barry Nalder, headed off to Lake Monduran chasing Barramundi. Chris soon hooked up to a cracker 101cm which gave him a bit of curry but finally came over the side for some happy snaps before release.
In what seemed like an eternity and
what seemed like a thousand casts, Barry also ticked another species off his bucket list landing his first metre plus Barra, this lady coming in at 106cm.
It was so good watching them swim away healthy as, and I can now see why chasing them is so addictive. Looking forward to the next trip.
As reported last month, some of the club members headed to Fraser Island to team up with the Hervey Bay Amateur Fishing Club guys for the few days of Tailor fishing, and Fraser turned it on again. The size of the fish may have been a bit smaller than usual but so much fun and watching them swim away was the best part.
Jonathan Smith from Tin Can Bay club landed a 70cm Flathead shortly after arriving and released it after the obligatory photos. A bonus was that our new club members Kris and
Rainbow Beach TIDE TIMES
boated
Dustin Graham landed their first Tailor in the surf, so smiles all round.
The Hervey Bay Club made their annual trek down to Tin Can Bay for a spot of fishing and a catch up social, incorporating the Interclub Master Caster Competition and with some serious efforts by all our local club came out on top again, winning 8pts to 2. But the social interaction was the special part, and we look forward to the next one.
Special thanks go to the local Ukulele Club for the entertainment on this night, something different and very entertaining.
With our local competitions, largest fish of the month went to the 106cm Barra landed by Barry Nalder, and the winner of the 2-day competition was also Barry Nalder with a nice presentation of Flathead - with Derek Andrews coming in second with his haul of Whiting.
Our club held another of the Juniors’ Days where parents and their children could come along, have a go at pumping some Yabbies and then a spot of fishing off the sand banks at Norman Point.
If smiles were any indication of
the success of this day, then it was definitely a hit and to top it off there was some quite nice Whiting landed, with young Charlie being the most successful taking a few home for dinner.
The day wound up with a sausage sizzle provided by our club and we all look forward to the next day as it was as much fun for us as it was for the kids.
Finally, we held another of the monthly workshops, this time focusing on one of the most overlooked yet extremely important parts of our set ups: Trailer Wheel Bearings. So as not to be just an audio presentation, we removed, cleaned, inspected, and repacked the bearings on the club
Check out the Cooloola Coast’s favourite newspaper on social media ...
box trailer so I guess one could say it was a part working bee.
Whatever you like, the night went over well with some valuable information being shared and if it keeps the wheels turning (pardon the pun) then our job is done.
That’s about all I can share with you for the month of September so I’ll wrap up here, and you stay safe and get out there and bend a few rods. It’s such a special place.
More fab fish photos available at www.rbcn.com.au!
Right: Family fun was the order of the day with our Juniors event.
Barry Nalder landed his first metre-plus Barra, with this 106cm specimen. Jonathan Smith caught-and-released this 70cm Flathead soon after arriving on Fraser for the Club’s recent combined trip with Hervey Bay.
Juniors collecting yabbies to use for bait.
This cracker 101cm Barra gave Chris Rippon some curry before posing for pics then being released.

Book Week Disco – An Adventurous Evening of Fun!
In late August, Tin Can Bay students danced the afternoon away at the highly anticipated Book Week Disco. From 4–6 pm, the hall was filled with music, laughter and non-stop energy as students joined in the fun.
This year’s theme, ‘Adventure’, inspired some truly creative costumes - from daring explorers and pirates to magical creatures and storybook heroes. The dressup theme tied in perfectly with Book Week, encouraging students to let their imaginations run wild.
Throughout the evening, students enjoyed a range of games, danced to their favourite songs, and shared plenty of laughs with friends. The disco was a fantastic way to celebrate reading, creativity and community spirit.
A big thank you to the P&C, staff, and volunteers who helped make the event such a success!
P-2 Students Explore Australia Zoo
EJack Leaps to Success at Wide Bay Regionals
ARLIER IN TERM 3, Prep to Year 2 students from Tin Can Bay P-10 State School enjoyed an exciting excursion to Australia Zoo. Despite the rain, students eagerly explored the many animal enclosures and made wonderful discoveries throughout the day.
Prep students were fascinated by koalas, crocodiles, dingoes, and echidnas, while Year 1 students marvelled at wombats, birds of prey, kangaroos, emus, and even elephants and tigers.
Year 2 students made a dash to the Africa section, spotting rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and meerkats. One of the highlights was at the cheetah enclosure, where students excitedly raced the big cats along the fence.
A favourite moment for all was hand-feeding kangaroos and wallabies, with many children naming it the best part of the day. To finish the day, everyone gathered at the famous Crocoseum to watch a spectacular wildlife show.
Students cheered as they learned about crocodiles and other creatures. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement, especially when a student exclaimed, “Look! We get to see real life dinosaurs – it’s a crocodile!”
The excursion was a day to remember, filled with smiles, learning and adventure. A sincere thank you goes to the P&C for their generous contribution, which helped make this memorable experience possible for all students.
TIN CAN BAY P-10 State School is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of Jack at the Wide Bay Regional Athletics Carnival. Competing against some of the best athletes in the region, Jack delivered impressive results across multiple events.
His highlight performance came in the long jump, where he soared to claim 1st place. On the track, Jack sprinted his way to 3rd place in the 100m, narrowly missing silver by just one one-hundredth of a second - a thrilling finish that showed his determination and skill.
He also placed 4th in the 200m and 6th in the 400m, showcasing his talent across both sprint and middledistance events.
Jack’s consistent hard work and dedication have now earned him the opportunity to represent Wide Bay at the State Titles in Townsville. This is an incredible achievement, and the entire school community wishes him the very best as he takes on the next level of competition.
Well done, Jack - you’ve made Tin Can Bay proud!

Seniors Expo And Senior Citizen Of The Year Awards
Throughout October, seniors across the Gympie region can enjoy a variety of events, activities, and opportunities to connect, with the aim of promoting positive attitudes towards ageing, encouraging participation, and strengthening community connections.
The Seniors Expo will be held on Thursday 30 October 2025, from 9am to 11.30am at The Pavilion Conference and Reception Centre, Gympie. This free Council run event offers seniors the chance to connect with local services, social groups, and recreational activities, while enjoying a free morning tea.
A highlight of the celebrations is the Senior Citizen of the Year Awards, which recognise residents aged 60+ who make an outstanding difference in our community through volunteering, cultural or sporting activities, preserving history, or simply inspiring others.
Nominations are now open and close at 5pm on Monday 20 October 2025. For more information and to complete a nomination form, visit www.gympie.qld.gov.au/seniors

Beach and Bay Community Pantry
THE COMMUNITY pantry has continued to provide hampers from the Community Centre every second Thursday.
We remain blessed with donations from local businesses, including Aldi Gympie and Woolworths Cooloola as well as Ed’s Beach Bakery and the Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay IGAs. Our new trailer has been put to good use, transporting hundreds of kilos of fruit and veg each fortnight. Breakfast Club continues to be well
supported by the children at Tin Can Bay School on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. We are so grateful to the volunteers who get up early to cook and prepare food, making sure the kids have a full tummy to start the day!
If you would like to receive a fortnightly hamper and are not on our list, or wish to volunteer at our breakfast club or hamper distribution, please contact Hannah on 0409 787240.
IT WAS A BIG month in the garden during September. We were able to put together the garden beds, fill them with soil and plant out a mix of vegetables and herbs in the beds.
It was lovely to work with people from all ages and see the enthusiasm everyone has for the project. Thank you to all those who came down to make this time a success!
We are looking at holding working bees on the third Tuesday of the month, with the next one being on the 21 October.
We are in need of people who are able to pop down and water the plants that have started growing.

New fans keep students cool
Jess Milne TIN CAN BAY P&C PRESIDENT
THE FATHER’S DAY STALL in September was a wonderful success, raising over $1,000. A big thank you goes to the volunteers and donors who made it possible and to the families who supported the stall by purchasing gifts. Fundraising like this directly supports the school and its students. Recently, the P&C endorsed the purchase of four new industrial fans to help keep classrooms cool, two new slow cookers to assist with Meal Deal preparations, and a $50 contribution to support Jack Howlett with uniform costs as he heads to the QRSS Track and Field State Championships in October, congratulations Jack!
A special shout-out to the Sleepy Lagoon Hotel, who generously donated four family pizzas for the highest fundraising class for the Colour Fun Run. Congratulations to 3/4M, who pulled in an incredible $1,300! Total funds raised was over $6,200 which, after event and student prizes costs, will inject thousands of dollars into student learning experience subsidies and play infrastructure.
Thank you to Stacey for coordinating the 2025 Colour Fun Run, to all the volunteers who pulled together to make the event possible, and to Mrs Batteglene for taking a slime bath for a good cause.
The P&C is also excited to announce success in receiving funding through the 2025 Queensland Mental Health Week Community Events Grant Program. This will support the school in hosting a Break Through Brekkie and Be You Free Dress Day in October. Initiatives like this assist in bringing the school community together in a positive way with the P&C and school working in a partnership.
Looking ahead, preparations are underway for the 2025 Mega Raffle. Members will be out and about selling tickets for some fantastic prizes, so dig deep and help support future student learning subsidies and school
COMMONLY KNOWN as cat’s whiskers or Java tea, is a plant species in the family Lamiaceae (also known as Labiatae).
A fast growing perennial shrub 1m x 1m, with open habit, leaves to 5cm long and dense heads of beautiful white flowers with long ‘whisker like’ stamens. Responds well to pruning.
Orthosiphon aristatus is used in landscaping to attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds to its nectar.
We would like to thank everyone for their support at our recent Open Day.
Wanted Volunteers:

infrastructure improvements.
And don’t forget, there’s another easy way to support Tin Can Bay School! By recycling your bottles and cans at any Containers for Change collection point and using the code C10192130, every dollar goes straight back into student learning and resources.
New P&C members are always welcome. To join the team, visit the school office for a membership form.
