January 12, 11:45 am – 1 pm. Ring in President/CEO the new year with Healdsburg Chamber the Chamber as we welcome and introduce our new President/ CEO, thank our outgoing and incoming Board Directors, and give special recognition to Herb Liberman for his dedication and support for the Healdsburg community.
Mo McElroy
The guest speaker will be Ben Stone of the Sonoma County Economic Development Board. His program is titled “2011-Better Times Ahead” and he will be joining us to give an outlook for the local economy in 2011. Ben will explain why there’s good reason to believe that 2011 will be a better year for business, and which sectors are likely to do particularly well - and why. He will also give a special outlook on Healdsburg, including a five year forecast for many key indicators, and what those indicators mean for local business in Healdsburg. Visit www.healdsburg.com/newsatnoon to sign up, or use the form at the end of this newsletter.
I am honored to receive this recognition of 2010 Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce Ambassador of the year. This has been my best year yet as a volunteer and member of our local Chamber. We all know that we only get out of something what we put into it. My goal this past Bob Santucci year was to prove that to Realtor, Century 21 myself. As a result, this Classic Properties year I have developed more friendships and business relationships than ever before. There are some of the best marketing opportunities in town available through the Chamber. You have already paid for them, use them! In fact there are some huge hidden opportunities at the Chamber, you just need to embrace them. Here is what I did this year to improve my Chamber experience in 2010. •
I switched everything that I had participated in at the Chamber and expanded on that. Rather than make food at the high school and work the 6:00 AM check in for the Chamber’s Bike Tour, I manned a rest stop for a day. I met more nice people that day.
• Next, I checked in with as many new businesses to Healdsburg as I could and shared my Chamber experience. When those businesses joined the Chamber I would help

“We have been rounding our employees’ time clock punches to the nearest quarter of an hour. Will the 30-minute meal period be calculated on the rounded time or on the actual time?” - anonymous question The actual time should be used and a full 30-minute meal period should be granted and taken. To illustrate, an employee who is scheduled to go to lunch from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m. actually punches out at 12:07 and punches in at 12:25. The rounded time is 30 minutes while the actual time is 18 minutes. This is a violation of Labor Code Section 226.7(a) and penalties are assessed under Section 226.7(b). A full 30 minutes must be given; a de minimis argument on a minute or two may be accepted, but the strong recommendation is that the full 30 minutes be taken. Rounding of time to the nearest 5 minutes, or to the nearest one-tenth or quarter of an hour has been used in industry prior to calculators and computers. This was primarily for ease of record keeping, and allowed by both state and federal authorities with the full understanding that employees be compensated for all the time they actually work. Generally, this means consistency in all punches, including in and out for meal periods, and that over a period of time, the employees will be paid for all the time worked. For employers who give 30-minute meal periods, supervisors should be aware of the requirement that employees take the full 30 minutes and ensure that employees do so. Rounding to the nearest quarter of an hour can be used, but the actual punch should be when starting and stopping work. Employees who come in early on their own should not punch in before the starting time. Supervisors should check time cards frequently for accurate time reporting. Fall 2010 Local Economic Report The Sonoma County Economic Development Board (EDB), in partnership with the Sonoma County Workforce Investment Board (WIB), is pleased to present the Fall 2010 Local Economic Report. Our research partner, Moody’s Analytics, provided most of the research for this report. Highlights from this Local Economic Report include: • Technology will be the major driver for the county’s recovery. Medical device firms make up a significant portion of the technology industry, and are benefitting from the high demand from overseas markets and an influx of venture capital. • The projected smaller wine grape harvest this year will help prevent a repeat of last year’s accumulation of unsold inventories of grapes and wines amid slumping demand. Additionally, a new label standard requires “Sonoma County” to be included on all wine labels produced in the county, this has the potential to strengthen the long-term outlook for the wine industry in the county. • Net migration, which has been positive for the past two years, is expected to remain positive in the next five years. • Sonoma County’s recovery will slow in the second half of 2010 before strengthening in 2011. Outside of the technology industry, the labor markets will not improve significantly in the short-term and the unemployment rate will remain above 10% through mid-2011. • I also took note of who was not attending the Chamber mixers and emailed them the next month to encourage them to attend the upcoming mixer. When they arrived, we had something to talk about. • When I go to a Chamber Networking function I bring some marketing materials like a screen shot of my new website “www.HealdsburgRealEstate. com”, Healdsburg’s best and easiest real estate website. Sometimes I take along a postcard with great up to date real estate information and a picture of my new logo that can be seen at www. facebook.com/Healdsburg Real Estate . Become a fan, it’s fun! • I do a lot of cross networking between local businesses, the Healdsburg Kiwanis Club, the Healdsburg Tribune and Healdsburg.Patch.com where, by the way, you will find my real estate column on Fridays. I love working with our local Chamber and appreciate the work that they do. Lets face it, these are challenging times and also great times to embrace this great place we live and our fellow business people.
