ISPRAŽNJENI PROSTORI
MEŠTROVIĆEV PAVILJON U GOSTOVANJU
GALERIJA ART&CERZE, 2. — 26. 4. 2025.
Primjerice, nasumičnim biranjem izrezanih dijelova novinskih članaka, Šabić u dadaističkoj maniri manipulira fotografijama kako bi, kroz ponekad apsurdne i humorističke momente, utisnula drugačije kontekste prostorima u kojima, uz fosile emocija, koegzistiraju i kroz kolaže opredmećene

EMPTY SPACES
MEŠTROVIĆ PAVILION VISITING PROGRAM
ART&CERZE GALLERY, 2 — 26 APRIL 2025
Preserved within a glass membrane, like living tissue, the photomontages of visual artist Petra Šabić capture photographic compositions in almost plein-air lighting, recorded during her daily transits through familiar spaces. Each exhibited photograph was created over a period of five years, during which the artist’s lens froze visually purified places of residence and passage that reminded her of spatial drawings with dynamic interactions between line and surface. Gathered in one place, the photographs bear witness to the patina of time in spaces that have since been entirely transformed, their outlines now buried deep within the artist’s memory. Seeking to revive and reinterpret these past recollections, the artist fills the porous gaps in her memories of these captured frames using collage techniques and chromatic interventions. Through these modifications, they become distinctive, transformed topographies of memory. With each treated photographic surface, through an intuitive and associative interplay of collage and colour, the artist experiences a flood of emotions that remain sealed within the impermeable glass frames, which also serve as intimate memorial plaques. The concept of filling in the gaps in memory is also reflected in the cyanotype process, which Šabić abruptly interrupts mid-transfer onto paper to consciously immortalise the fragmentary trace of the past. Even though the work continuously evokes forgotten moments from the artist’s memory, it also engages with the present from which the artist re-examines her relationship to the photographed landscapes and the previous versions of herself who instinctively recorded them. For instance, by randomly selecting cut-out excerpts from newspaper articles, Šabić manipulates the photographs in a Dadaist manner to imprint different contexts onto spaces where, alongside emotional fossils, materialised perspectives

of the present coexist through collage—at times evoking moments of absurdity and humour. Similarly, the confluence of amorphous, coloured surfaces is nothing more than the inscribing of fresh meanings that Šabić projects onto photomontages in her current life phase. The ever-changing environment of the exhibition space also plays a significant role in the work, which, with its various structural elements, continuously offers new experiential prisms that can spontaneously emerge for observers from countless angles like gentle flashes of nostalgia.

Dokumentira svoja promišljanja i prevodi ih u vizualni jezik kroz mapiranje i asocijacije, a zatim ih ponovno upisuje u iluzornu dubinu unutarnjih prostora putem slojevitosti i reinterpretacije stvarajući prostore koji se umnožavaju, povezuju i razotkrivaju. U recentnom radu ispituje mogućnosti različitih medija – site-specific instalacija, tapiserije i tekstila, fotografskih objekata – i bilježi transverzalna značenja u svijetu kojim je okružena.
