The Road To Living Well With Movement Disorders

I

nnovative technology for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders was recently implanted for the 100,000th time worldwide, inspiring people like longtime fitness trainer Roy Roden to pursue previously impossible goals. Roden has always had an adventurous spirit, and the 55-year-old and his wife Lynn enjoy participating in many interesting outdoor activities together. This month, Roden and his wife embarked on their most challenging journey together yet—a 4,500-mile cross-country bike ride to raise awareness and research funds for Parkinson’s disease. Just a few months ago, these activities would have been unmanageable for Roden, who is one of the more than 1 million Americans living with Parkinson’s. Diagnosed in 2008, he began experiencing difficulty over time with basic tasks, such as eating and getting dressed. Each day, he was taking 10 different medications, and their effectiveness was waning. “It was crazy—I was taking some medications purely to control the symptoms from other medications,” Roden said. Last July, Roden made the decision with his neurologist and family to pursue Medtronic Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy, during which a small, pacemaker-like device sends electronic stimulation to a specific area of the brain that controls movement. The stimulation suppresses the unwanted motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The device is placed under the skin in the chest, and very thin wires connect the device to the brain to enable the electrical stimulation to reach the source of symptoms. Roden says the tremors he experienced before the surgery have decreased thanks to Medtronic DBS therapy. “DBS therapy has given me things I never would’ve had without it. I didn’t want to be looking in the mirror in 15 years, wishing I had done the surgery,” he said.

Roden added that when a cure is discovered for the disease, he will be ready. “The therapy is reversible, so when they find a cure, my doctor can just take the device out.” Medtronic DBS therapy can reduce several motor symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease, including stiffness or inflexibility of the limbs or joints; slowness/absence of movement; and involuntary, rhythmic shaking of a limb, the head, or the entire body. Results with the therapy vary; not every individual will receive the same benefits or experience the same complications. Patients should discuss potential risks and benefits of DBS with their physician. Medtronic DBS therapy is the only FDAapproved DBS therapy in the United States for Parkinson’s disease, as well as essential tremor and dystonia (through a Humanitarian Device Exemption). “DBS therapy has harnessed advanced technology to meet the varied needs of patients and enabled them in many cases to improve their ability to live well with movement disorders,” said Bruno V. Gallo, M.D., Roy’s neurologist and Director of Intraoperative Neurophysiology & DBS at the University of Miami’s Department of Neurology. That is certainly true for Roden. Feeling healthy and strong, his mission is to educate people who have Parkinson’s about their options for managing their disease. Roy, his wife and brother-in-law are currently on their 3.5-month-long bike ride, which started in Seattle and will end in South Florida, and are making frequent stops to speak to community groups and raise funds for Parkinson’s research. “People’s amazing response to what we’re doing has restored my faith in humanity,” he said. “DBS therapy has opened a door for me. It’s been a great ride so far.” --- (NAPSI)

Green Homes Designed To Weather The Storm

T

here’s good news for those looking for a way to build homes that are beautiful, light-filled, green and can withstand severe weather. A company is using proprietary technology to build architect-designed, precision-built, environmentally friendly homes. As Hurricane Sandy and other severe storms have demonstrated recently, it is in a homeowner’s interest to build a structure that can handle all types of extreme weather—hurricanes, blizzards, tornadoes and more. In this case, homes made by a company called Blu Homes are engineered to withstand wind gusts of up to 110 mph—this is the mid range of a category 3 hurricane—and can be custom engineered to withstand wind loads of up to 150 mph—well above a category 4. Its homes can also be outfitted with highperformance, hurricaneresistant windows and are also designed to be fire resistant—a real benefit in areas vulnerable to forest fire. What some may find surprising is the building material that’s key to the home’s constructionstructural steel framing. The company reports that its structures, which are all constructed in its own factory, can be built in as little as six months, from initial design to final move-in date. This type of building process eliminates weather delays entirely. The company also provides a suite of complete project management services, which it says will simplify the homebuilding process even further. By visiting the company’s online 3-D Configurator, a buyer can personalize and take a virtual tour of the home before building. The builder believes this makes it easier for a home buyer to add roof decks or other extras to the design or to select finishes, colors, floor coverings and fixtures. Home buyers can select from eight distinctive home designs, ranging from

single-level studios and cottages to two-story, four-bedroom homes with light-filled living rooms that feature 16-ft. windowed walls. After the home is built, it’s shipped to the site selected by the customer, where it is lifted onto the foundation, unfolded and sealed—a process that typically takes four to six weeks. The builder believes its structures can be used by individual home buyers and building developers in a number of ways, including: • As single-family homes, vacation homes or cottages • As accessory units to an existing structure, such as master bedroom, home office, media room, art studio, in-law apartment, game room or exercise studio • As a retirement home, providing independent living for seniors and empty nesters • As faculty housing or other buildings for educational facilities and institutions • As part of a green housing development • As investment properties for spec builders. Solar ready and LEED Silver certifiable upon leaving the factory, standard green features in the company’s structures include: • recycled structural steel framing • radiant heat flooring

• high R-value walls and • energy-efficient appliances. Plus, Blu Homes can achieve net zero energy status, Energy Star rating, and higher LEED certifications with the inclusion of other available green elements. “We believe the most sustainable thing we can do is build our homes to last for generations,” said Bill Haney, the company’s founder and CEO. “Structural steel framing and advanced building science make it possible for Blu’s homes to withstand extreme weather and seismic conditions and give homeowners peace of mind that their families and investments are safe.” - (NAPSI)

Boost Energy Efficiency At Your House You may be able to avoid getting hot under the collar when you see your energy bills if you heed a few hints that offer a good way to focus your home improvement efforts where they count.

• Take Advantage of Solar Energy. Simply opening the drapes on sunny winter days can let sunshine in to naturally warm your home. Similarly, closing them at night can reduce heat loss.

• Upgrade Your Attic Insulation. Heat escaping through the attic may account for half your home’s heat loss. Make sure there’s at least 12” of insulation up there. Upgraded insulation can even help soundproof and weatherize your house for optimum living quality.

• Use a Humidifier. If your furnace doesn’t have a built-in humidifier, get one for frequently used areas. The additional moisture can make it feel as much as 8° warmer than the actual temperature.

• Install Storm Windows and Doors. This can cut heat loss at those sites in half. If you can, replace single-pane windows with double- or triplepane windows. • Install an Automatic Setback or Programmable Thermostat that can adjust the house’s temperature around your schedule. When you’re away or asleep, program it to a cooler temperature. When you’re around, raise it and you could save up to 10 percent of your heating and cooling costs. • Check Your Furnace. Change filters frequently. Also clean air registers, baseboard heaters and radiators as needed. Change forced-air heating system air filters monthly as well.

• Insulate the Concrete Slab That Supports Your House. It’s estimated that 10 percent or more of a home’s energy loss can come from an uninsulated foundation. By adding the EnergyEdge system from CertainTeed, you can cut back on bills and help save the environment. Featuring PVC rails with expanded polystyrene insulation, it can be applied by handy homeowners or professional contractors to the exposed slab edge or other exposed foundation of the house. The system provides an R-10 thermal resistance value and meets International Energy Conservation Code requirements. Plus, the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act entitles you to an energy tax credit of up to $500 on this kind of energy-efficient building material. - (NAPSI)

Keeping Your Pets Safe When Traveling

T

here’s good news for pet owners who want to take their pet along on their next trip.

With more pets than ever accompanying their owners on vacation, a growing number of products are available to make traveling easier for pets and people. Traveling With Small Pets For those traveling by car, a versatile toploading kennel like the Petmate® 2-Door Kennel assembles easily and provides a safe place for small pets to rest while en route to any destination. When bringing a small dog or cat on a plane, remember that airlines require each pet to be contained in a carrier that meets specific criteria. For instance, the Curvations® Underseat Traveler was engineered specifically to fit into tight spaces like the underside of an airline seat and provide ample side and top ventilation.

When planning a plane trip with a large dog, remember to check with the airline for individual kennel requirements and other important specifications. The kennel you select should follow these guidelines and comply with the standards of the International Air Transport Association. One such product, the Vari Kennel®, is designed to offer comfort and safety, and comes in multiple sizes that fit pets up to 125 pounds. When hitting the road with a large dog, it’s a good idea to use a plastic kennel or barrier to keep the pet contained and out of the front seat, which causes distractions and poses a safety risk to both the pet and pet owner. And, a tubular or wire pet barrier is designed to do just that. It requires no tools to adjust and is easy to install and remove. Make sure all shots, vet records and ID tag are up to date. For fun, make sure you have packed fetching toys as well as a collar and a leash to keep dogs nearby and safe. Don’t forget to include a portable waterer or travel bowl for hydration and nourishment on extended trips or outings, especially outdoors. (NAPSI)
