How To Finance Your Startup Business
If you’re wondering how to finance your startup, you’re not alone. Depending on your business, financing it can either be relatively simple, such as drawing on your personal savings, or more complex, perhaps requiring you to seek loans or investors.
Here are some common ways to finance a business, along with pros and cons to keep in mind:
Personally Finance Your Startup
In the digital age, many small businesses can be up and running with little to almost no capital, which can make financing your business with your own money more realistic.
Personally financing your business has some distinct advantages—you retain full control over your company, take on zero debt and have no loan payments to worry about.
On the flip side, you could lose money if the business doesn’t work out.
The bottom line is that if you’re willing to take on personal financial risk, using your own money is one of the most straightforward methods of funding your startup, while maintaining full control.
Ask Friends and Family For Financial Support
Help from friends and family is another common method for financing a business. This could look similar to personal financing or a private loan.
The advantages depend on the terms of the contributions. You might retain full control over your company and not have to take on debt or you may have to relinquish some control and agree to repay what you’ve received plus interest.
Take Out a Bank Loan
Banks and credit unions are another financing option. However, you’re taking on debt and will need to make regular payments on the loan, which can cut into cash flow. On the plus side, financing your business with a loan means that you retain full control of your company.
Be prepared to show a bank a business plan, expense sheets and financial projections, often for the first five years.
Securing a bank loan is a challenging process. A mentor can help you prepare a loan application, so you have the best chance of securing the loan you need.
Bring in an Outside Investor
Bringing in an outside investor is typically not a realistic option for most businesses. The experts at SCORE found that only about 2% of businesses have a business model that would interest investors.
Most often, equity investors require not only a percentage of ownership in the company but an “exit plan”— otherwise known as your plan for how they’ll recoup their investment and see a healthy return.
With an investor, though, you get relatively quick access to capital without periodic loan payments, potential access to business expertise, and connections you might lack.
If your startup requires a significant capital investment, bringing in an outside investor may be a smart option.
Rally Support Through Crowdfunding
Once considered an unconventional way to finance your business, crowdfunding is now a common method for raising startup funds.
The structure of a crowdfunding campaign depends on your platform host. The idea is to encourage small contributions from a large pool of people. Funders receive gifts for their support which usually includes the product or service you sell.
The downside to crowdfunding: it takes a lot of effort and money and failure is very public, unlike with private ventures.
Choosing the Right Financing Option is Key
As you develop your startup, connect with a SCORE mentor. They can guide you toward the right financing options for your needs and lead you on the pathway to success.

Boiler Rooms—An Old Stock Scam Gets A Technology Makeover
While tactics may have changed, “boiler room” operations are still used to pitch dubious investment schemes, according to the experts at the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Typically run as outbound call centers, boiler rooms target retail investors with highly speculative—often fraudulent—investments. In addition to phone calls, today’s boiler rooms also rely on messaging apps and social media to contact potential investors.
Regardless of the method of contact, the scammer’s goal is the same: Use high-pressure tactics and persuasive language to convince investors to purchase specific investments that will ultimately enrich the scammer.
Red Flags of a Boiler Room Scam
The Unsolicited Pitch. If you’ve previously shown interest in higher-risk investments or been victimized by a scam, the promoter might have found your name on a lead list (sometimes called a “mooch list”). Ask yourself, why would they share this opportunity with you rather than keep it to themselves?
The Hard Sell. Scammers often try to pressure investors into buying shares on “can’t miss” opportunities, painting a picture of wealth from an investment and claiming time (or product) is scarce. Be aware that boiler rooms frequently pitch speculative investments for which limited information is available.
The Unlicensed Promoter. Callers might claim to work for organizations that offer stock recommendations. However, the organizations often aren’t registered with FINRA, associated with any FINRA-registered firm, or involved with any legitimate business entity. Callers might use fake names and credentials, disguise their phone number, or create a new website to appear more credible.
The Pump and Dump. Fraudsters sometimes engage in manipulative trading to create the illusion that the stock is on an upward trend and starting to gain traction. This could be a sign of a “pump-and-dump” scheme.
How Can You Protect Yourself?
1.Decide now to decide later. Even if the claims sound plausible, don’t say “yes” to an aggressive cold caller or social media promoter, particularly if the recommended stocks are very low priced. Learn to recognize the tactics fraudsters use, and don’t feel guilty about hanging up.
2.Check with regulators and other third parties. Use FINRA BrokerCheck to verify whether a firm and individual are registered to sell securities or give investment advice. Double-check the validity of information about the organization or individual. Also check an investment’s public disclosure information using the SEC’s EDGAR filings.
3.Research the promoter. Fraudsters constantly change the names of their outfits and set up new websites. Search domain registration databases to see how recently the website was created and by whom, and search the promoter’s name along with terms such as “complaints” or “scam.”
4.Don’t give second chances. If you haven’t invested, scammers will keep pressuring you. If you have invested, they’ll try to convince you to invest more.
5.Remain vigilant. Think twice before paying for stock picks from nonregistered or unlicensed individuals—or relying on tips from social channels, subscription services, or newsletters. And be on the lookout for multiple scam attempts in close proximity to one another.
If you’re suspicious about someone giving you unsolicited investment advice or promoting a particular investment, report your concerns to FINRA, the SEC, and your state securities regulator.

Stroke & Dementia in Black Men: Tips for Staying Healthy During National Minority Health Month and Beyond
With nearly 800,000 Americans having a stroke each year, it remains a leading cause of death and longterm disability. Making matters worse for many Black/African American men is that they are at higher risk for high blood pressure and strokes, according to medical experts. For many health conditions, racial and ethnic minority communities are impacted at disproportionate rates. April is National Minority Health Month, a good time to raise awareness about the importance of improving the health of minority communities and reducing health disparities. During this month, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is raising awareness of this important topic and sharing tips to help manage the risk of stroke.
Over time, uncontrolled high blood pressure can damage blood vessels and lead to a stroke. High blood pressure can also lead to other damage in the brain that has been associated with dementia. The good news is people can take steps now to get—or keep—their blood pressure numbers in a healthy range to help prevent stroke and dementia later in life.
Stroke Prevention Tips for Black Men
• Know your blood pressure numbers. Blood pressure is measured using two numbers. The first number, your systolic blood pressure, measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. The second number, your diastolic blood pressure, measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart rests between beats. If the measurement reads 120 systolic and 80 diastolic, you would say, “120 over 80,” or write, “120/80 mm Hg.”
• Normal Blood Pressure for Most Adults
Less than 120/80 mm Hg
• High Blood Pressure
130 or higher/80 or higher mm Hg
• Stay informed. Discuss high blood pressure with your healthcare provider. Talk to your healthcare provider about your risks and ways to manage your blood pressure to help prevent stroke and dementia.
• Take your medications. Your healthcare provider may recommend taking medicine daily to prevent stroke and heart attack, especially if you have high blood pressure.
• Quit smoking or using tobacco. Smoking harms nearly every organ in the body, including the heart. Any amount of smoking damages the heart and blood vessels.
• Manage your cholesterol levels. Reducing your cholesterol will lower your risk of developing a wide variety of serious health issues, including
stroke and heart disease.
• Eat healthy foods and exercise. Choose plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Get about 30 minutes of moderate to intense exercise, such as brisk walking or bicycling, every day. Following a healthy eating plan and keeping physically active will significantly lower your risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, and other chronic and debilitating health problems.
• Manage your diabetes. Having diabetes or pre-diabetes puts you at increased risk or stroke and heart disease. You can lower your risk by keeping your blood glucose (also called blood sugar), blood pressure, and blood cholesterol close to the recommended target numbers provided by your healthcare provider.
• Get enough sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep is important for good heart and brain health. Adults should aim for an average of 7 to 9 hours, and babies and kids need more depending on their age.
• Start early. Preventing stroke and heart disease is more effective if started in midlife. Studies also find that controlling blood pressure may reduce the risk of dementia.
These simple and effective lifestyle changes can reduce your chance of all types of stroke, heart disease, and dementia later in life. Taking charge of your health now can help avoid unnecessary risks and keep blood pressure under control.

Clear the Air of Indoor Pollutants This Spring
In the Spring, people often focus on the outdoors when it comes to air quality. But indoor air quality (IAQ) is also a crucial aspect of overall health and wellbeing. Unbeknownst to many, common pollutants can lurk inside homes, affecting health in subtle yet significant ways. Here are some of the most prevalent indoor pollutants and strategies you can use to identify and mitigate their impact on your home’s air quality:
Dust: The Silent Intruder
Dust is a well-known indoor pollutant that includes dead skin cells, pollen, textile fibers, and other debris. Dust can aggravate respiratory conditions such as asthma and allergies. Regular dusting and vacuuming, along with using HEPA filters, can significantly reduce dust levels in the home.
PRO TIP: If you find yourself having to dust more often, you may want to consider air duct cleaning.
Mold: The Unseen Threat
Mold exposure can trigger allergic reactions and respiratory problems. Regularly clean and inspect susceptible areas in your home.
PRO TIP: Maintain proper ventilation, control moisture levels, and promptly address any water leaks or damage.
Pet Dander: Furry Friends, Hidden Hazards
Pets are beloved family members, but their dander and fur can exacerbate respiratory issues as they circulate through your home via your HVAC system. To minimize pet-related pollutants, bathe and groom pets regularly and keep them out of bedrooms.
PRO TIP: Pet owners should change HVAC filters once a month.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): The Invisible Culprits
VOCs are chemicals emitted as gases from common household products. To reduce VOC levels in your home, opt for low-VOC or VOC-free products. Proper ventilation is also crucial for minimizing the effects of VOC emissions.
PRO TIP: Incorporating indoor plants can help absorb VOCs.
Maintaining healthy indoor air quality requires vigilance and proactive measures to identify and mitigate pollutants. For a fresh start, schedule an inspection of your HVAC system. Find a qualified professional near you at NADCA.com.
