Real Club Valderrama

The legendary Real Club Valderrama became the venue of the Volvo Masters, then, the finishing touch of the season and most acclaimed tournament of the European Circuit, between 1988 and 2008; as one of the most outstanding and eagerly awaited dates in international golf. Valderrama became its house, its home and the faithful witness of some of the great golfing careers of the end of the last millennium.

Over all those years,Valderrama hosted the tournament, except in the years from 1997 to 2001, which it took place at Campo de Montecasillo, in Jerez de la Frontera. Over all those years, Miguel Ángel Jiménez from Malaga was the sole Spanish player to lift the trophy.

El inglés Nick Faldo, toda una leyenda fue el ganador de la primera edición en 1988 que con una espectacular ronda final de 68 golpes le arrebató en el último momento, por dos golpes de ventaja, el título al recordado Severiano Ballesteros. El norirlandés Ronan Rafferty fue el ganador en 1989 de Faldo por sólo un golpe de ventaja aunque muy cerca, en tercera posición llegó a acariciar el torneo Chema Olazábal, líder tras la primera jornada.

Mike Harwood (1990) y Roger Davis (1991) fueron los siguientes vencedores antes del dominio escocés por dos años consecutivos: Sandy Lule (1992) y Colin Montgomerie (1993) que brindaría una de las páginas más bonitas del golf en Valderrama al compartir victoria con el alemán Bernhard Langer, empatados a golpes por la falta de luz al final de la jornada en 2022. El propio Langer sería el ganador en 1994 y el también alemán, Alex Cejka, lo sería un año después.

The Englishman Nick Faldo, a real legend, was the winner of the first edition in 1988, which with a spectacular final round of 68 shots allowed him to snatch the title, with a two-shot lead, from the much-remembered Severiano Ballesteros. The Northern Irish player Ronan Rafferty was the winner in 1989 by a single shot lead over Faldo, although very close in third place, and even to touching the trophy, was Chema Olazábal, leader after the first day.

Mike Harwood (1990) y Roger Davis (1991) were the following winners before Scottish dominance fortwo consecutive years: Sandy Lyle (1992) and Colin Montgomerie (1993) who would offer one of the most beautiful pages in golf at Valderrama by sharing victory with the German Bernhard Langer, tied on shots due to the lack of light at the end of the day in 2022. Langer himself would be the winner in 1994 and the fellow German, Alex Cejka, would be a year later.

Mark McNulty levantó el trofeo en 1996, seguido de Lee Westwood doce meses más tarde y Darren Clarke, su sucesor en 1998; estos dos últimos con sede en Jerez. Antes del cambio de milenio, al fin, un español, nada menos que ‘el pisha’ fue capaz de hacerse con la victoria [M. A. Jiménez].

Al cambio de siglo, los siguientes ganadores fueron: Pierre Fulke (2000), Padraig Harrigton (2001). Regresa el torneo a Valderrama con el triunfo de Langer y Montgomerie (2022), Fredik Jacobson (2003), Ian Poulter (2004), Paul McGinley (2005), Jeev Milkha Singh (2006), el reconocido Justin Rose (2007) y finalmente, en el último año del Volvo Masters, fue el danés Soren Kjeldsen, el último ganador de este torneo, bajo esa denominación.

En aquellos años Valderrama se hizo un nombre en el mundo del golf, por la espectacularidad de su campo, la excelencia en todos los cánones y lo apasionado de su afición y comunidad unida al golf. Una historia que continuó después con el Andalucía Masters y que hoy toma el relevo con LIV Golf. Decir golf es decir Valderrama, Sotogrande y algunos de los momentos más importantes de este deporte a nivel internacional.
