A Note From the Pastor

After 25 years of writing for the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires, Paul Vigna authored the book Almightier: How Money Became God, Greed Became Virtue, and Debt Became Sin (2025). This story of money, that is, the system society uses to track what we own and who owes who, reveals some important truths I may quibble about money's deity, but our currency has "In God We Trust" inscribed on it. Using the cash we carry or the credit cards we offer at the Stuff Mart counter requires a high level of faith in this system of exchange. As Vigna states: "money has value because--and only because--we believe it has value."

Vigna begins the story of money in the temples of the ancient world. The temple was the place where humankind came to make offerings to the gods to ensure a blessing or a good season of crop production From the temple as a depository for our money, it is only a short step to the loan made on the potential for future growth and production. Further, kings could wipe out debt when they conquered a territory, to the chagrin of creditors While the creditors complained, worship in the temple flourished.

Implied in this arrangement was the d t di th t possessing money was a sign of god writer Poggio Bracciolini wrote an e argued that "avarice (greed) is some drives human creativity and the acc enables a city, like Florence, to pros are now reaping the harvest of an u good and that the presence of mon

Concerning wealth, Jesus states plainly: "No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth."

(Luke 16:13) Jesus invites us into a deeper relationship with our God and then to use money as a tool living under the citizenship of heaven. Remember what we pray in "The Lord's Prayer," thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven

John Wesley offers us some advice on how to live out our heavenly citizenship We have noted in recent weeks his invitation to follow three simple rules: "avoid evil, do good, and stay in love with God." Our sermon series during October will introduce us to three more rules:

Gain all you can

Save all you can

Give all you can

The importance for Wesley will be intentionality We begin with the end in mind, to be a blessing for others, we first learn to live generously To be able to give, we t th t f ili id d f b i

Book Study with Pastor Allen Desiring God’s Will

Most people think of God’s will as something to be found or as the receiving of guidance from God when making decisions. Too often, however, the problem is not that we don’t know what God desires for our lives, but rather that we just don’t want to do what we already know he wants. How might our wills be changed so that we become both willing and able to do what God asks of us? In Desiring God’s Will psychologist and spiritual director David G. Benner explores the transformation of the will in Christian spirituality. He examines why our desires are disordered and how our human volition can be brought into alignment with God’s intentions so that we willingly choose that which God wants for us

Join Pastor Allen, beginning September 10, at one of his classes offered at 10:00 AM on Wednesday or at 6:00 PM on Wednesday evenings To register you can visit our website, or contact Nicole in our church office

Beginning Thursday, September 4 at 7 pm and running for 12 sessions in the Commons Room, Wes Lockfaw will be offering a study based on Richard Foster’s Celebration of Discipline which is listed in Christianity Today’s top ten religious books of the twentieth century. Hailed by many as the best modern book on Christian spirituality, Celebration of Discipline explores the "classic Disciplines," or central spiritual practices, of the Christian faith Dividing the Disciplines into three movements of the Spirit, Foster shows how each of these areas contribute to a balanced spiritual life

A Fresh Beginning

Kicking off our 2025-2026 School Year!

The 2025-2026 Haymount UMC Preschool School year kicks off on September 2! We are excited to welcome a new group of young learners, and returning students alike! We would like to remind our congregation that there are still a few openings in all of our class levels! We would love to have the opportunity to teach and minister to your little one. For information on registration, a tentative 2025-2026 calendar, and all pertinent registration forms, you can visit the Preschool page on our church webpage!

We are also still in need of substitute teachers for our 2025-2026 school year. We offer competitive pay and flexible hours that allow our substitute teachers to work either as much or as little as they would like throughout the year. If you are interested in applying, please contact our preschool director Laurie Ashley at (910) 484- 5646 or HUMCpreschool@haymountumc.com

lFor two decades, our congregational care team has lovingly offered a service that touches the very heart of our church community At Home Communion. This tradition, which began with the inspiring vision of Dorothy Funkhouser, has blossomed into a heartfelt mission, with a devoted group of eight volunteers currently bringing communion to 14 individuals across five long-term care facilities in the Fayetteville area.

As we look to the future, we’re excited about the potential for this program to flourish even more! With your support and involvement, we can rekindle the original spirit of At-Home Communion and extend its blessings to our homebound members, allowing them to partake in this meaningful experience from the comfort of their own homes.

If you feel called to serve in this ministry or know someone who would benefit from receiving at-home communion, we warmly invite you to reach out to Katherine Pugh at 910-797-9278

Music Ministry News

Children’s Choir Returns

Beginning on September 10

The fall season is almost here and we have some exciting news for children ages 3 through 5th grade! This year, there will again be two children’s choirs, the Cherubs (ages 3 – preschool, Room 210) and Gabriels (Grades K – Grade 5, Room 220) Rehearsals will take place each Wednesday from 5 – 5:45 pm. This year’s theme, Finding Your Voice, is based on Ephesians 4:15, “We will speak the truth with love. We will grow up in every way to be like Christ.” The phrase “finding your voice” has become an expression that refers to discovering who we are, what we value, and what we want to communicate to the world. This year, children will grow in faith and confidence as they learn what it means to find and use their voices to worship and praise God, pray, encourage and speak words of kindness, speak up for those who need help, and share the Good News of Jesus This ministry is open to Haymount members and others, so be sure to invite a friend!

Phantom of the Opera

October 12 at 4 PM

Haymount’s Music for a Great Space Series kicks of a new year of exciting music with the 1925 classic film, Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney and accompanied by renowned organist, Dorothy Papadakos. This performance will include a large screen experience complete with popcorn and all the trappings of a night at the theatre!

The film is an adaptation of Gaston Leroux's novel and follows the story of a disfigured musical genius, known as the Phantom, who haunts the Paris Opera House He becomes infatuated with Christine Daaé, a talented young singer, and uses his influence to help her rise to stardom while simultaneously terrorizing the opera house's management. The Phantom's obsession leads to tragic consequences as he attempts to win Christine's love, ultimately resulting in a dramatic confrontation with her true love, Raoul de Chagny This is a performance that promises fun for families and cinema and music lovers of all ages!

Dorothy Papadakos is an American concert organist, composer, lyricist, playwright, and author She is the former organist at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, the first female organist to hold that post. She was also organist for the Paul Winter Consort at the cathedral's Easter and Christmas services and performed with the ensemble on their Grammy Award-winning album Silver Solstice, released in 2005.

2026 Summer Mission Trips

Are you interested in joining us?

Next summer, the mission team church is planning two different international mission trips. We again anticipate a medical and construction team trip to El Salvador in July 2026. In addition to that, we are planning a leadership trip to Kenya. The Kenya trip is planned for the month of June. We are in the early planning stages, but hope to have full information about the Kenya trip before mid September.

If you want more information or are interested in joining us in El Salvador, please contact Wes Jones [910-977-2568 or jwesjonesmd@gmail.com].

If you are interested in joining us in Kenya in June or want more information, please contact Karen Barkman at barkmandk@ gmail.com or text 910-818-9050.

We know it’s early, but with many people already securing plans for Summer 2026, we need to be booking hotel rooms, and times with different organizations.

Think about it. Pray about it. Is this the year for you to go on an international mission trip?

Finance Update

From your Finance Committee

The finance committee continues to be optimistic about what we’re seeing in the life and finances of our church. We are so grateful for your continued support of Haymount and its programs. As of the end of July,we’ve received $739kof the $1.36M budget (roughly54%). We’ve spent 52% of the budget leaving us with a current surplus of ~$30k.

In addition to our operating budget, we depend on many other revenue streams to support our church’s upkeep and programs We are blessed to have had many church members who recognized the value of endowments; funds that will growing indefinitely while contributing a portion of the growth annually to our many needs These endowments are specified for children’s ministries, missions, music and building upkeep to name a few If you’re interested in one of these specific areas or one of your own and would like to contribute to a fund that will continue to grow and do good work for decades to come- please reach out to Nicole in the church office or Lucy Jones with your questions

In addition to endowment support, the most recent yard sale generated almost $7k which will support music in both the traditional and contemporary services. The yard sale started in an effort to financially support medical mission trips to Bolivia almost 3 decades ago but has since expanded its support to other Haymount ministries. In addition to financial support of Haymount, the yard sale offers fellowship opportunities for members who get involved with the pricing and selling of goods and offer nice items to the community at a fraction of the cost. If you would like to get involved in this mission- please reach out to Karen Barkman.

The trustees continue to work through a list of much needed Haymount updates. I’m sure many of you have noticed the magnolia tree's removal due to the damage it was causing to the adjacent walkway. As much as I’ll miss the magnolia- I love the beauty of the walkway arches that are now so much more apparent In late August, you will see windows being replaced (with Andersen windows) and new siding going up You will also notice new handicap plates being added to multiple doors at the church to aid in easier access as well as additional exterior cameras for security Simultaneously, trustees are receiving bids to replace the air handlers for the New Life Center The trustee’s jobs appear to be endless-we are so very grateful for all the time and energy they spend helping to maintain and update the church building

In the last newsletter, I mentioned starting a fund to begin replacing the stained-glass coverings on the sanctuary so we can see the stained glass from the outside of the church In just two months, we ’ ve received $15,000 If you would like to contribute toward this update OR any other specific update/ministry in the church- please just identify your gift in the memo line.

If you have any questions about how your pledged dollars are used or any of these updates- please reach out. Also- if you have a background in business or finance and have an interest in joining this committee- please let me know. We are always looking for great minds to help join and lead our committees.

Warmly-

Barkman Middleton (on behalf of the Finance Committee)

Trustees Update

A lot of work is visible around our campus as the replacement of windows and siding on the education building has begun! This project, at a cost of about $197,000, is a greatly needed repair and refurbishment that will bring greater heating and air efficiency through new windows, and a beautification of the building by replacing the aging and damaged siding with new hardie board siding that will last for many years to come. Other projects have been happening around the campus as well, with the sad but necessary removal of the magnolia tree, which has been replaced by fresh sod bringing a cleaner and brighter appearance to the front of the church

Construction on our columbarium will hopefully begin soon, after a delay on the part of the architectural firm We expect to see lots of construction traffic happening on the Cape Fear Avenue side of the sanctuary in the very near future! If you have not yet purchased a niche, you can contact Nicole Andre in the church office for assistance.

If you want to help our Trustees with the many needs of our facilities and grounds, please make a contribution to our facilities fund. Our trustees are using these funds to address the maintenance and repair needs of our church.

Liturgical Ramblings

October 4 – Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi

St. Francis is famous for his love of nature and animals, famously preaching to birds and befriending a wolf. He advocated for a life of poverty, considering it true freedom and a way to connect with God, and he dedicated his life to helping the poor and sick, showing compassion and humility.

October 5 – World Communion Sunday

Observed on the first Sunday in October, World Communion Sunday celebrates the unity and diversity of the universal Christian community. As we gather around the Lord’s table, we recognize our unity in Christ, joining with others worldwide in Holy Communion Beginning in the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) in 1936, the observance was adopted by the National Council of Churches in 1940

October 31 – Reformation Sunday

According to Philip Melanchthon, October 31, 1517 was the day Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-five Theses on the door of the All Saints' Church in Wittenberg, Germany The holiday is significant for the Lutheran and Reformed Churches, and other Protestant communities also commemorate the day the Sanctuary, and the New Life Center lobby These will hopefully be operational within a few weeks

If you had the privilege of knowing Ann McAlister, you were undoubtedly touched by her passion for inspiring a love for learning in children. An avid reader throughout her life, Ann inherited this gift from her mother and lovingly passed it down to her son, John Michael. Over her career as an educator, Ann had the remarkable opportunity to transform the lives of countless children, each one a testament to her hard work and heartfelt dedication. She thrived as a tutor, reveling in the joy of witnessing her students flourish not only in their reading skills but also in their self-confidence. Ann’s legacy embodies the essence of nurturing growth and her selflessness and large heart were truly one in a million Ann's legacy lives on vibrantly within the walls of Haymount United Methodist Church, where her profound love for children's literature has blossomed into a cherished initiative known as Ann's Book Nook Established in the wake of her passing in October 2024, this free library stands as a testament to her unwavering passion for nurturing young minds through the joy of reading. Thanks to the generosity of a devoted donor, we have created a welcoming space where children of all ages are invited to explore a treasure trove of books, free to take home without the expectation of return. This initiative not only provides access to literature but also encourages a spirit of generosity, inviting families to contribute their own beloved books for others to enjoy. Ann's impact on the community is palpable, as her love for learning continues to inspire and uplift countless children, fostering curiosity and a lifelong appreciation for reading. We invite you to visit Ann's Book Nook, where Ann’s passion for teaching children continues to make an impact on the world around us.

Unlocking God’s Abundance

Our 2025 Stewardship Campaign

Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church’s mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes

During the month of October, we will be exploring God’s calling for us surrounding financial giving through our Stewardship Campaign Our Stewardship Campaign will conclude on October 26, Consecration Sunday. Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive We are encouraging our congregation toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, “what percentage of my income is God calling me to give?” More information is to come regarding specific plans for Consecration Sunday as well as our stewardship campaign Keep an eye out on our website and on Sunday mornings to learn more

El Salvador Mission Trip Recap

Our Haymount mission team to El Salvador had an amazing trip in July with lots of spirit-filled encounters. One story helps describe the July El Salvador mission team impact: soon after arrival, one of our team members became ill. After a medical evaluation, we laid hands and offered prayer for our team member, and he was healed! This prompted a discussion with the Ahuachapan nurses to offer a prayer team working alongside our medical team. On the intake form, patients visiting the medical clinic were asked if they wished to see our prayer team as well as our medical team. Of 290 patients, over half answered “Yes!” The prayer session was personalized to allow specific prayer requests Many left with tears in their eyes, including an aging pastor Adela, a nurse, commented: “The prayer team has been such a blessing for our people ”

Stephen Minister Spotlight

Stephen Ministers offer Christ-centered care to people in the congregation and the community experiencing life difficulties. As an Army retiree, firefighter/EMT, and public school teacher, I see people everyday that need assistance in some way. Mental health wellness should be a priority for everyone and being a Stephen Minister has given me the skills and ability to reach these people on a different level. My goal as a Stephen Minister is to offer God's light to everyone I come in contact with, and bring them out of their darkness.
