Some of the risks when Buying Diamonds Abroad As we start to think about holidays and as customers flock to the bright lights of Turkey, New York and further afield to places like India, Thailand and Mexico, the need arises to warn Diamond buyers of the huge risks attached to foreign bought diamonds.

The general consensus of reputable jewellers is that customers need to be vigilant, as with most things in life, the moral of the story being that if the price is too good to be true, then it probably is. Never was the phrase ‘caveat emptor’ - let the buyer beware – more apt than when buying a diamond abroad.

It is human nature to seek out a bargain but unfortunately you don’t always get what you have paid for, and, there are a number of sharp practices customers are falling for when buying diamonds abroad.

There is a danger that the diamonds are of a poor grade, are seriously over-valued, usually accompanied with a fake certificate and/or the diamond is fracture filled. Of course there are good deals to be had everywhere and it is worth hunting them down, but always beware that you don’t get rushed into making any kind of decision involving parting with money.

Whilst it is not an illegal practice (and in fact some jewellers legitimately carry a selection of fracture-filled diamonds) jewellers who retail them are obliged to disclose this information to the customer.

However, customers buying fracture-filled diamonds abroad are either not being made aware that their diamond has been through this process or, it’s not being fully explained to them.

There can be an issue with false certificates. With colour photocopying so advanced, these once unique certificates are now very easy to fake.

Grades on these certificates are inaccurate and they often overstate the clarity and colour by more than a grade. It is imperative to know that you are dealing with a legitimate supplier who can fully stand by the certificate they are offering.

And of course if you are buying abroad it is highly unlikely that you’ll receive any after service or guarantee. If you need it resizing or if a stone becomes lose, or even if you want your jewellery cleaned then it is going to be difficult to return to your holiday destination.

Have you noticed how much longer the days are? I know I’m looking forward to the clocks going forward in March. This made me wonder when and why we actually change our clocks? We’ve been changing our clocks twice a year for almost 100 years, in fact since 1916. The idea of British Summer Time, also known as Daylight Saving Time, was first raised in the UK by William Willett in 1907. William was a London builder and also a keen horseman, believing that most people missed out on early daylight hours he published a paper ‘The Waste of Daylight Hours’ in 1907. Although he campaigned for the rest of his life, it was one year after his death in 1915 that Britain adopted his Daylight Saving Time, a few weeks after Germany during the First World War. It was introduced to save fuel and money, and has been in operation ever since. In the UK the clocks go forward 1 hour at 01:00hrs on the last Sunday in March and go back at 02:00 hours on the last Sunday in October. When the clocks are forward i.e. April through to end of October, this is known as British Summer Time (BST). There is more daylight in the evenings and less in the mornings. When the clocks go backward i.e. November through to end of March, this is known as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). There you go.

Make The Most Of A Small Kitchen Tiny kitchen spaces are often extremely efficient – you can wash, slice and cook almost without moving at all. And you can create a practical and attractive galley kitchen for very little money, writes Katherine Sorrell.

PLANNING THE ROOM In a small kitchen every centimetre counts, and the first principle of design is the ‘work triangle’ – the movement between the cooker, sink and fridge. Each zone should be self-contained, with its own storage and worktop space, but it should also be easy to move between each one. Ensure this by drawing a floor plan with lines connecting each point on the triangle, and avoid placing obstructions between them. In theory the most efficient length for each side of the triangle is about two metres, but in practice the three work centres should not be uncomfortably close or too far apart. In a double galley, keep the sink and cooker on the same side, with the fridge opposite. You can’t create a triangle in a single galley, but its linear shape makes it easy to use as long as the line is not too long.

EATING AND ENTERTAINING It’s always a good idea to fit in somewhere to eat and drink – perhaps a fold-down table, or a small dining table which extends for extra guests. Or, add a breakfast bar by forming an ‘L’ shape at the end of a worktop and tuck a couple of high stools underneath it.

CHOOSING UNITS & WORKTOPS The trend is for mixing textures and colours in the kitchen, including metallics, marble and rough, tough industrial accents.

Deep worktops and open shelving will update any sized kitchen but quality matters most.

Cheaper carcasses are made from chipboard, sometimes with just hardboard backs, which is fine for a budget option. But for a well-used, long-lasting kitchen, opt for plywood or MDF veneer, the thicker the better. Laminate worktops are the budget choice – choose high-pressure rather than low-pressure ones, as they’re more durable. Wooden worktops can be inexpensive, but avoid ones that are too cheap or too thin, especially next to a sink as

they’ll just warp and buckle. Splashbacks are often made from the worktop material, though cheaper alternatives are ceramic tiles, tongue and groove painted with tough gloss, or a fashionable sheet of clear or coloured acrylic.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SPACE WITH THESE IDEAS • Fit wall cupboards that go right up to the ceiling • Sliding doors are ideal as they don’t intrude into the room • ‘Magic’ corner cupboards (with mechanisms that let you access the back) let you fit more in • Wall-hung racking systems provide organisation but let you see what you’ve got • Pull-out shelving and slim drawers (e.g. in the plinth) add extra storage space • Internal fittings help organise cupboards • For appliances, choose multi-functional, compact, slimline, built-in and stacking versions • Reflective and/or transparent surfaces and pale colours make the room seem bigger • Base cabinets on legs or recessed plinths let you see more floor • Avoid visual confusion by sticking to ultra-plain cabinet fronts with either no handles or very discreet ones • Larger-than-average floor tiles make the floor seem larger

Crosswords, or Cross Words?

The Joy of the Cryptic Crossword One of the joys of having time on my hands since I no longer have to obey an alarm clock, get up from my comfy bed, and trudge to my office is that at any time I choose, I can put aside thoughts of drudgery and settle into a good Cryptic Crossword.

Not one of that boring single word clue type of crossword, but the ingenious, and sometimes funny Cryptic kind.

There is, of course a minor ‘downside’ to this, which is that of late, my skills are sadly lacking in fathoming solutions that turn out to be the name of someone famous for being famous. So called ‘celebrities’ whose claim to fame is that they behaved badly on some Reality TV show that I never watch, or an athlete of whom I have never heard.

Confidentially, I suspect that I am just not as adept at crosswords as I was. I prefer to believe that somehow the ‘Goal Posts’ moved. For example, try this for a clue: Chippy I changed admirably! Solution: Liam Brady I got nowhere near it, until I googled ‘Chippy’ and after a long ‘search’ came up with a ‘possible’, which fitted the gaps. Perhaps an average Sports enthusiast, would not believe I missed that ‘admirably’ was an anagram of ‘Liam Brady’. Apparently, Mr Brady was nicknamed ‘Chippy’ because of his footballing skills and love of Fish and Chips. So now, I know something new! More specifically, I know one more footballer name, other than George Best. George’s name, shuffled, by the way, is Go Get Beers! Do you like that?

Anagrams can be fun! If you re-arrange the letters of ‘Margaret Thatcher’, you get ‘That Great Charmer?’

(The question mark there depends on your point of view). Or, ‘Eleven plus Two’ is the same as ‘Twelve plus One’, whichever way you look at it, when you shuffle the letters. (Amaze your grandchildren with that).

‘The Class Room’ is an anagram of ‘Schoolmaster’

and another one that I especially liked, was ‘They see’, which can be shuffled about to read ‘The Eyes’ Of course, the compiler is not going to tell you that the solution is an anagram; it’s concealed in a sentence that demands you get into his mind-set. Until you do, the end of your pen can get quite masticated, which, whilst not good news for your dentist, is exercise for the brain!

My lovely husband would despair at being dragged from his studious concentrations on the latest issue of ‘What Car’ and into my abstract world of Cryptic clues when I would absolutely need to read out the clue and tell him the solution to something, which I would find brilliantly elusive or amusing. He did not! He was comfortable knowing every screw, part, pipe and power of every car ever conceived.

At a loss to understand how anyone ever arrived at the solution, or how the compiler had ‘escaped the loony bin, and now lurked in the back office of a respectable newspaper like ‘The Telegraph’, he would sigh and return to ‘What Car’.

Jigsaw puzzles or Sudoku? What else can you do with a completed Jigsaw, but destroy it? A Sudoku grid, even when completed just gets recycled with the newspaper and nothing is committed to memory.

Shuffling numbers, or weird shaped bits of cardboard, seems pointless to me when new words and different things to discover will be re-usable forever.

One day I will compile my own ‘Cryptic Crossword’, but I think I need to know a bit more about what is going on in the world of celebrities before I challenge the wit and wisdom of my betters.

Meanwhile, excuse me if I click my trusty Parker, pour a glass of wine and put up my feet for this week’s Cryptic Challenge, for right now I am confronted with a blank grid.

Hot Property Despite the recent weather, there is evidence of Spring in the form of buds appearing in many gardens.

However, this year estate agents’ SOLD boards are appearing all over Widnes too. We caught up with Peter Rouski, director at independent estate agency Abbeyfords, to see what is causing the Widnes property market to blossom so early in the year.

The local market took quite a while to recover after the recession compared to other areas, comments Rouski. “But now, with interest rates remaining low and a wealth of Help To Buy schemes available, there are large volumes of buyers waiting to pounce on the their dream home. “In the last week alone, we’ve sold 10 properties, with many achieving their asking price straight away because more than one person wanted to offer”, he states.

“The market is very close to pre-recession times and there really has never been a better time to sell.” - can this be made to be bolder as it’s a key point, maybe blue and bold or something??

Chicken

In Red Wine 2 tbsp olive oil 600g skinless chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks 225g button mushrooms 200g shallots, peeled clove, peeled and crushed garlic 1 300ml red wine 200ml chicken or vegetable stock 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree 1 bay leaf 2tbsp cornflour Sprigs of fresh parsley to garnish Sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans, to serve

Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes

This is a quick, easy and flavoursome way to serve chicken. Use a full-bodied red wine such as a Burgundy for the best flavour, although there is no need to buy a really pricy one!

1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chicken chunks and fry for 4-5 minutes, turning frequently until golden brown all over. Transfer to a plate with a slotted spoon.

2. Add the button mushrooms and shallots to the pan and fry for 5 minutes until just beginning to brown. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute then return the chicken to the pan and stir in the red wine, stock, tomato puree and bay leaf.

3. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken and onions are tender.

4. Blend the cornflour and 2 tbsp water to a smooth paste then stir the paste into the pan. Simmer gently for further 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time, until the liquid has thickened.

Serve with sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans and garnish with parsley sprigs.

TIP This dish freezes well, so it’s worth doubling up the quantities to freeze away half for another day. Allow to cool completely then spoon into a shallow freezer-proof container and freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat in a flameproof casserole until piping hot.

Vertical Cover With Climbers If the boundaries of your garden are uninteresting or drab, then it is time to think about some vertical gardening. Upright surfaces are itching to be clothed in glorious climbers or wall shrubs, and if you have several vertical sites then so much the better.

A visit to your local garden centre will reveal a plentiful supply of suitable plants.

Start by looking at the surface you have, the size, the direction it faces and the amount of sun or shade the plants growing on the wall or fence are likely to receive.

Soil type is important as the plant you choose must be suited to the site.

Some climbers are quite quick growing and will look good later this year, and improve as the years pass. Many provide strong colour and others will be a useful backdrop for the garden as a whole. Most buildings can have climbers grown against them, so if you have an unsightly shed, garage or even a fairly uninteresting looking back to your house, then consider erecting some sort of support system on which to grow your climbers.

Break up the monotony of a long stretch of wall with a range of different plants, and make a tall, narrow building seem broader by only allowing them to reach the height of the first floor. A climbing hydrangea, Hydrangea petiolaris, or selfclinging plants such as ivies are ideal, but make sure the mortar on your wall is in good shape before planting.

Climbers are best planted in open ground as they tend to have sizeable root systems. If grown in containers you must re-pot regularly and ultimately plan to use a big container such as a half barrel. Use a loam-based potting compost and add extra grit for drainage, and place a deep layer of crocks at the base of the container. Add controlled release fertilizer granules to the compost, to ensure that plants get adequately fed for the first few months. A triangular or V-shaped trellis panel at the back will give initial support for the plant to climb up before moving on to your wall or fence. Tie the top section of the trellis into the wall or fence, so that it does not rock about.

For ground planting, dig a large hole at least 18 inches (45 cm) from the wall or fence and incorporate plenty of compost or well rotted manure. Soak the plant’s root ball and place in the hole, ideally at a 45 degree angle so that it leans towards the wall, then spread out the roots and plant. If your climber came already attached to bamboo canes, untie the stems from any central stake

and train the best looking shoots towards your new support system, using the bamboo canes to help it on its way. Keep climbers well watered, particularly if they are on or near a sunny wall.

Hale Village Our meeting place for this Wednesday 11.00 o’clock walk was Hale Park as parking is plentiful and there is a bus stop just outside the park entrance so it is suitable for all travellers.

Turning to the right as we leave Hale Park there is the local pub appropriately called The Childe of Hale which serves good food to be washed down by a drink of your choice.

Just a short walk from the pub, on our left we came to the new bronze statue of John Middleton also known as The Childe of Hale who was born in this village in 1578. This imposing giant statue is by local sculptor Diane Gorvin and is sited almost opposite the pretty small thatched cottage where John lived. He was 9 feet 3 inches (2.82m) tall and supposedly slept with his feet out of the bedroom window.

He returned to the village after serving King James 1st in London for many years and died in 1623.

John is buried at St. Mary’s, the local church and his rather large grave is well worth a visit. There are very interesting information boards by the side of the road giving details of the village and John’s fascinating life.

Dragging ourselves away from all this remarkable history we carried on walking through the village with its fine houses and colourful gardens. As a sign of the residents good nature there is always a dog bowl alongside the pavement filled with fresh, clean drinking water for any canine visitors that pass this way, how very thoughtful!

Leaving the village we find ourselves in open farmland and head down the bridle path to the Old Lighthouse, now a private dwelling, on the bank of the river Mersey. At this junction there is a path to the right which will take you past Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport and beyond but we always take the path to the left as it runs parallel with the Mersey with its reed beds populated by numerous brightly marked Reed Buntings and in the Spring many wild flowers grow alongside our path including bright yellow daffodils.

The soil is a rich dark colour and last year the farmer grew potatoes and the year before that it was wheat so you really feel that it is a country walk. There are a few rabbit holes one must look out for but I think our talking and laughter warn the furry animals of our approach so they stay well hidden.

At the end of the field we pass through the gate and turn left to make our way back to Hale village along another wide bridle path. At this point, looking towards Runcorn, the Jubilee Bridge stands out as does Pickerings Pasture Nature Park and if the tide is in it makes for quite a pretty scene.

Strolling along this pathway we were tempted to pick and eat far too many blackberries which are abundant in the hedgerows but even though they stain your fingers, who cares. Here, there is a good view of aircraft coming into Liverpool Airport if timed right as Easy Jet, Ryanair and occasionally noisy military planes may use this flight path. Soon we are back in the village entering quite close to the statue of John and it is only at this point that we may encounter a local car or two as most of this walk is traffic free.

This very pleasant walk takes just over the hour but a walk leader is present both at the front for the faster walkers and at the rear for the strollers and we make sure everyone gets back safe and sound.

Don’t be Taken in by the Pension Scammers Since new pension regulations were introduced in 2015, conmen have been using the new freedoms to target people approaching retirement. One of the scams involves telling those under the age of 55 that a ‘legal loophole’ allows them access to their full pension, with no requirement to pay tax on the money withdrawn (in reality, a rate of up to 55%).

Pension monies are then moved into an alternative scheme run by the fraudsters, with savings either being stolen or severely diminished after extortionate charges are made for the ‘service’.

To make matters worse, HM Revenue and Customs has been sending out bills to reclaim tax on the amounts withdrawn, leaving victims of the scam with no pension savings and in large-scale debt in some cases.

HOW CAN THE CONMEN OPERATE SO EFFECTIVELY? Although younger people are a clear target for pension scammers, those aged 55 and over are also under threat.

With no restrictions on how pension savings can be used, unscrupulous individuals and criminal groups are taking advantage of a lack of regulation within the industry, plus an uncertainty about how best to invest such a large amount of money.

Inefficient systems also form part of the problem, enabling conmen to set up these rogue pension schemes. HM Revenue and Customs are not pension regulators, but having introduced a ‘fit and proper person’ test in 2014, they have at least attempted to control the potential for fraudulent activity.

HMRC has the power to de-register or refuse to register a new pension scheme, but some have said they should take more responsibility for what is happening to victims, rather than chasing them for tax payments.

PROJECT BLOOM TASKFORCE A new taskforce has been set up by the government and the National Crime Agency to combat the problem of pension fraud. A ‘perfect storm’ of new pension regulations, lack of awareness about where to reinvest, and the fact that large sums of money are involved, has enabled scammers to get away with too many sophisticated cons.

It’s hoped that Project Bloom will bring awareness to the issue, however, and specific advice is offered to anyone concerned about their pension. You need to be wary of: Anyone offering a ‘free pension review’ or access to your pension pot if you’re under the age of fifty-five Offers of help to obtain a pension statement, or to provide a tracing service for lost pensions The Pensions Advisory Service provides free advice if you’re worried about potential scams, or to discuss your pension options in general.

A SOPHISTICATED APPROACH One of the problems is that scammers set up sophisticated systems and procedures that include glossy brochures and polished, well-rehearsed speeches.

This makes the entire con appear legitimate unless you’re aware that this type of fraud is taking place.

Bringing awareness of what’s happening is key to combating crimes like this, and hopefully Project Bloom will help to prevent more people suffering the devastating loss of their retirement income.

WATCH OUT FOR FAKE WEBSITES Fraudsters are even setting up fake websites with names very similar to legitimate bodies offering free advice. They may be able to gain access to your personal information in this way, and then contact you directly via phone or email.

It pays to check the web address you’re typing in very carefully, to ensure that the site is legitimate and not part of the fraudsters’ arsenal of tricks.

New Mini Cooper S Clubman All4 Yet another Mini variant is on its way - this time it’s a new all wheel drive ‘Cooper S Clubman ALL4’ here in April from £24,305.
