Hello Lovely Readers and welcome to our July magazine.

If only I could remember where I’d put it….

Is it only me? I find myself getting to the top of the landing and thinking… what did I come upstairs for? Open the cupboard…what am I looking for?

And the worst one, driving to the supermarket and find myself driving in the opposite direction? Is it my age, should I be worried? Then I remember once when I was a teenager finding a packet of biros in the freezer and a box of beefburgers in the stationery drawer and realise that ‘Mirror, Mirror on the wall I am my mother after all’.

I love putting our articles together for the magazine and particularly love the interiors one this time - Is Green is the New Black? Would love to introduce some ‘Neo Mint’ into my home. And then remember I have a big slobbery boxer and wonder if it would be worth it after all. Will definitely be trying the Summer Berry Sponge though, sounds delicious.

Reversing The Middle Aged Spread As I moved towards the latter half of my 40s I found that it wasn’t just my age that was going up.

I’d always been pretty trim and the weight gain, particularly around my middle, was so gradual that I didn’t really notice it for a while. But with life being so busy I was definitely not looking after myself well enough, eating on the go and making poor food and drink choices. The menopause was kicking in and I also knew that, having had gestational diabetes with each pregnancy, the weight gain was making me a prime candidate for type 2 diabetes.

I’m not at all sporty, so I knew my weight loss would need to come from changes to my diet rather than exercise. I’d tried other diets before but had found

them too restrictive, too complicated or not sustainable.

But I decided to give Slimming World a go once I heard that I could still lose weight while eating favourites like jacket potatoes and spaghetti bolognese!

I’ll share in future columns particular aspects of my Slimming World journey, and of the wonderful Waverton group I am so proud of. But, suffice it to say for now, that middle aged spread is history, and I feel better than I have for years! 2 stone 5 lb lighter, 2 dress sizes dropped, cooking meals that the whole family enjoys, and spending an hour on Saturdays with lovely, local people in group: how glad I am that I joined Slimming World when I did. So glad, that I’ve trained as a Slimming World consultant and am taking over as consultant of the Waverton group from 29 June. Want to know more? 115g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 225g caster sugar Zest of 1 lemon 2 medium eggs, beaten 125g self-raising flour, sifted 1 tbsp milk 300g mixed summer berries such as redcurrants, blackberries, raspberries and blackcurrants • 2 tsp arrowroot blended with 1 tbsp cold water TIP You can replace the fresh berries with the same amount of frozen mixed berries, if liked.

1. Thoroughly grease four 175ml pudding basins with butter. Preheat the oven to 190C/fan 170C/ gas mark 5.

2. Place the butter and 115g of the sugar in a bowl and beat together until pale and creamy. Beat in the lemon zest then gradually beat in the eggs, adding 1 tbsp of the flour if the mixture starts to curdle. Fold in the rest of the flour with the milk to give a soft dropping consistency.

3. Divide the mixture between the pudding basins and cover each with a square of pleated buttered foil, scrunching it tightly around the sides of each basin. Transfer to a large roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the basins. Bake for 35-45 minutes or until risen and firm to the touch.

4. Meanwhile, place the berries in a pan with the remaining sugar and 2tbsp water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved.

Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5-6 minutes until the fruit has softened. Stir in the blended arrowroot and simmer, stirring all the time, for another 4-5 minutes until thickened.

5. Turn the hot puddings out onto serving plates and spoon over the warm fruit compote. Serve immediately.

High Summer In July, the perennials take centre stage with so many different flowers to choose from.

If you have a sunny border,plant it up for mid summer colour. For those with light well drained soil, plants such as Lychnis coronaria is an easy to grow flower with rosettes of silver grey leaves and

in summer has 50cm stems of magenta pink or white flowers. They self seed easily. For something different, Limonium latifolium or Sea Lavender will grow in sandy soil. It has sprays of mauve flowers in summer. Achillea filipendulina varieties or Achillea millifolium cultivars will also grow in well drained soil in the sun. With flat heads of pink, red, yellow or white flowers about 60cm tall they will drift above lower growing perennial Geraniums.

Lychnis Coronaria

For richer soils there are many more flowering perennials to choose from. A classic summer border flower is Phlox paniculata Bright Eyes. This upright plant has pink flowers with a lovely scent and grows to about 75cm. It is resistant to mildew and flowers over a long period. Plant it alongside the white Gypsophila paniculata Bristol Fairy. This will grow over 1m tall with many branching stems and double white flowers about 1cm across. Another spectacular flower is the large yellow daisy flower of Inula hookeri, up to 75cm tall. It prefers light shade and moist well drained soil. In time it will build up a large clump of yellow flowers for late summer and possibly into autumn. Echinops ritro or Globe Flower has 1m tall stems topped with balls of steely blue flowers adored by bees. The basal leaves can look tatty so plant behind something green to hide it!

Work to do in the garden includes controlling the Wisteria. Cut back those skinny long shoots made this season, to about 6 buds. Also prune Weigela just after flowering to encourage new shoots that will give flowers next year. Start trimming evergreen hedges and shrubs now so that new growth has time to harden off before winter. Keep watering vegetables and harvesting peas and French beans to keep them cropping.

If you would like to visit gardens, look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support.

A highly skilled footballer with the right attitude and great personality it was no surprise to hear Nate has been recognised for more than his physical football skills. In fact he’s been presented with a variety of achievements.

One of these that I found the most interesting and important is the ‘Players Player’ Award.

Over the past two years we’ve had the pleasure of supporting Nate on his football journey which began with sponsoring him to play in Holland with Flint Academy.

Each player in the team votes privately for who they think should be awarded the best player. This covers more than the physical side of football. It includes many other skills that are highly significant, for example, being a team player, offering help, being supportive, having an ability to help others and provide guidance or encouragement to name just a few.

FC over the past two months, Nate is thrilled to announce that’s he’s been offered a contract for next season.

It’s an incredibly exciting time to join such a talented team as also the first to celebrate their promotion to LEAGUE ONE after a very tough play off at WEMBLEY just recently.

He’s looking forward to his new challenge which begins with an exciting opportunity to travel to MUNICH with the TRFC Elite Boys.

There they will compete over 3 days with 80 teams from 20 nations in a Summer Cup Tournament.
