Welcome

Hello lovely readers and welcome to the latest edition of our magazine, as ever packed full of lovely things to read and great suppliers on your doorstep. What is not to love about this time of year? The weather can be amazing, I always think it’s nicer than in the school holidays. Everywhere is looking so pretty, the trees are fully green, gardens blooming, my first earlies nearly ready in the allotment. Even the weeds can be looked at in a different way, after all “A weed is but an unloved flower” (Ella Wheeler Wilcox). And lastly but certainly not leastly, TWO bank holidays! Have you had your first BBQ yet this year? We’ve had a few get togethers with friends and family at ours - there is something magical about eating outside. Even the humble banger tastes different. ‘Til next time, if we do get the promised good weather… as Baz Luhrmann advises, “If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it”.

Plan Your Summer Escape From The Kitchen With Ovenu! Ovenu Warrington is calling on homeowners from across the town to enjoy their precious time with family and friends this summer! One of the toughest – and time consuming – jobs in the house is cleaning the oven, and Paul and Andrea Clark, owners of Ovenu Warrington, are urging people to leave this most-hated chore to the professionals. With people working long hours throughout the week, free time is a precious commodity, and on a nice summer’s day homeowners would much prefer taking advantage of the weather out and about in the sunshine, as opposed to tackling the oven. Paul said: “People want to spend as much quality time with their loved ones as possible, instead of cleaning the oven when the weather is nice. It is one of the most hated household chores, and our service is there to literally take the heat out of the kitchen!” The Ovenu valeting process involves dismantling key components of an oven such as the door, interior panels, fan and shelves and placing them into design-registered equipment, which uses environmentallyfriendly, non-caustic products to clean the oven parts. The whole process takes approximately three hours and leaves the oven, hob and exterior in immaculate condition. Ovenu is accredited by the British Accreditation Bureau and all cleaning products used by Ovenu are environmentally friendly, biodegradable and conform to 10

Paul and Andrea Clark, owners of Ovenu Warrington

the latest government REACH regulations. Ovenu’s Carbon Remover is also approved by the Vitreous Enamel Association. The experienced team of oven valeting specialists is also warning people not to neglect their ovens at any time of year, but especially in the summer. Paul added: “If not properly maintained, and, in extreme cases, a dirty oven can pose a number of health and safety

risks, not least, cooked on grease can become the possible cause of a house fire. It may be barbecue season, but the oven still requires a little TLC. “The oven is one of the most important appliances in the home and a regular oven clean can improve its performance and prolong its life and, in the long run, can save people money because their current oven will last longer.”

For more information about Ovenu, or to make a booking with Paul or Andrea, call 01925 453377, email ovenuwarrington@hotmail.co.uk or you can visit www.ovenuwarrington.net. You can also like the company’s Facebook page by visiting www.facebook.com/ovenuwarrington.

Recipe

Fresh Cherry & Almond Cake This delicious fruity cake can be served warm as a dessert or cold as a classic afternoon tea cake. Makes 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 minutes, plus cooling time INGREDIENTS 225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 225g golden caster sugar 225g self-raising flour 4 medium eggs, beaten 300g fresh cherries, pitted and halved 100g ground almonds 150g icing sugar Extra fresh cherries, to decorate TIP The fresh cherries will mostly sink during baking but this is perfectly normal, giving a moist fruity layer at the base of the cake. It’s best eaten within 2 days of baking. 16

1 Preheat the oven to 170C, fan 150C, gas mark 3. Grease a

20cm round deep cake tin with the extra butter and line the base and sides with baking paper.

2 Place the butter and caster sugar in a large mixing bowl

and using a hand-held electric mixer beat together until very pale and creamy. Gradually pour in the eggs, beating well after each addition. If the mixture starts to separate slightly, stir in a spoonful of the flour.

3 Sift over the rest of the flour and fold in gently with a

metal spoon. Toss the cherries into half of the ground almonds, and fold into the mixture with the rest of the ground almonds. Spoon into the prepared cake tin and gently level the surface.

4 Bake in the preheated oven for 55 minutes to 1 hour

10 minutes, until the cake is risen, golden and a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack to cool.

5 Whilst the cake is still cooling make the icing: sift the

icing sugar into a bowl and stir in 2-3 tbsp warm water and mix to make a thin icing. Spoon the icing over the warm cake, allowing some to drizzle down the side. Decorate with extra cherries and serve warm or cold.

TEETH IN ONE ONE DAY DAY An exciting concept in the treatment of missing or failing teeth… With more than 25 years’ experience in the of dental implants, the team at The Dental Academy understands the impact total tooth loss can have on personal and quality of life. Everyday functions such as eating, smiling, talking and visual appearance can all be adversely Conventional denture solutions such as removable dentures, often requiring the aid of adhesives, do not adequately address these issues. Over recent years The Dental Academy has been at the forefront in the advancement of, and investment in, dental implants, and its dedication to denture wearers more choice has led to a improvement in quality of life for its patients. One of the biggest fears people who have lost, or are about to lose, all of their teeth have is the prospect of being without any teeth at all for a period of time.

20

All in One Day... Treatment begins early in the morning. Any failing teeth are removed and the dental implants are placed. Patients can then relax in the calming and private atmosphere of the Academy or, if they prefer, may return home for a couple of hours whilst their bespoke teeth are constructed by our technician. The bridge and replacement teeth will then be expertly and patients leave with a smile, and looking forward to the enhanced quality of life that goes with it – all in one day.

Money Management

At Retirement As you approach the end of your working life there’s lots to consider concerning your financial future. Deciding which retirement income option is best for your circumstances will be one of the most important financial decisions you will ever have to make. The April 2015 pension changes have been described as the ‘biggest shakeup of the retirement income marketplace for decades’. For those approaching retirement there are now a number of options that need to be clearly understood before any decisions are taken. In my experience, as an Independent Financial Adviser, an increasing number of people are becoming more and more confused about the options available to them. The questions I am frequently asked include:

• What is income drawdown and is it suitable for me? • What are the benefits and disadvantages of taking income drawdown in retirement? • What is involved in purchasing an annuity and how does this differ to drawdown options? • Can I take lump sums from my pension? • These questions raise a number of potentially complex issues and the need for professional and clearly explained advice has never been more important. If you would like any further information on any of these issues raised, or indeed feel that you would like a more detailed review of your pension and investment planning, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Are you concerned about the performance of your investments? Is your pension fund on target to provide sufficient income in your retirment? How often does your advisor discuss these issues with you?

Stockton Heath Flower Club Foliage And Flowers For our April Meeting, which took place on April 2nd, we enjoyed a fabulous entertaining Demonstration by Debbie Davies from Formby. The title of her demonstration was “Floral Fashions”. Debbie created six beautiful arrangements showing how flowers had influenced iconic fashion designs over the years. These included arrangements depicting how William Morris used flowers in his designs. Debbie also produced stunning arrangements including a

flamboyant hat from 1930’s, an outfit showing Christian Dior’s New Look from the 1950’s, an arrangement in a Lou Lo Guinness hession bag, flared jeans from the 1970’s and a vertical arrangement from the 1980’s In each arrangement Debbie used magnificent foliage and flowers which were arranged in unique containers. She also complemented some arrangements with accessories, including hand bags and shoes that she had made out of plant material. The members and guests

Get more space at home for just £297+VAT We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten

belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise to open covers the Warrington area and is run by skilled local, Paul Langley, who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for.

“We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Paul. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £297 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. Paul provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too.

For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now! Call 0800 0359 880 or visit the 17:14 website at www.morethanloftladders.co.uk WA HALF LOOK UP OL.pdf 1 06/11/2017

The modern bedroom Does your bedroom look a little dated, or is it brimming with contemporary style? We outline some quick and easy ways in which to give it a brand new look. Your bedroom is your own personal space, and the ideal room in which to express your personality, so why not consider a top-to-toe makeover? A pop of colour Bold colours are on trend this spring, often quite dark and moody, and where better than a bedroom to go for this dark décor? Use fuchsia, turquoise, emerald, orange, mustard or deep blue in arresting combinations or perhaps just cover one wall with a strong shade. Even the addition of a bright headboard, rug, throw or group of cushions can make a difference. On the walls Experiment with paint colours by using a tester pot to cover a large sheet of card, then stick 48

it to different walls at various times of the day so you can see how the colour changes. Alternatively use patterned wallpaper, all over or just on a

feature wall. Or opt for a wallsized mural of, for example, a wooded glade, tropical palms, a cityscape, oversized flowers or a starry night sky.

Beautiful bed linen Introduce sumptuous bed linens that are gorgeous to look at and soft to the touch. You can use plain white as the basics, just adding a stunning throw, blanket, eiderdown or quilt – or several – for eye-catching colour and pattern. Or go for broke and put colour with colour and plains with patterns for layered vibrancy. Take the floor In a bedroom where wear and tear is not a factor, luxurious, deep-pile carpet is an option. If that’s beyond your budget, consider sanding back your floorboards and either varnishing or painting them, then adding a rug or two in a bold, modern style. Lights fantastic Lighting should be subtle and flattering. Make it adaptable with table or floor lamps in corners and fitting a dimmer switch to the central pendant. Choose warm white, energy-saving LED bulbs that are not overly bright. For bedside reading, a pair of swing-arm, wall-mounted lights frees up bedside table space, or hang a bare filament bulb from a coloured cotton flex suspended from the ceiling or a wall-mounted bracket.

Book Reviews

SUMMER reads

Want to create show-stopping meals on your BBQ? Fancy growing your own vegetables this summer? Maybe you’re just in need of a new novel for your holiday? We’ve got you covered…

Stepsister – Jennifer Donnelly Everyone knows the story of Cinderella, but who stops to consider her stepsisters? Isabelle is neither pretty nor demure. But if she’s brave enough to cut off her own toe to fit her foot in a glass slipper, what else is she capable of? While Stepsister is aimed at young adults, this imaginative story is also likely to appeal to older readers who fancy losing themselves in a twisted fairy tale for a few hours.

The Wych Elm – Tana French One horrific night changes Toby’s life for ever. He retreats to the place he feels safest – Ivy House, to look after his terminally ill uncle. But then a skull is discovered in the garden and Toby has to question everything he believes to be true. Are his cousins hiding something from him? Is his uncle a killer? And, with his own memory damaged, how can Toby be sure he’s not the murderer? While The Wych Elm is a slow-burner, it’s well worth sticking with.

Property – Lionel Shriver Looking for a book to dip in and out of, rather than devote whole sunny afternoons to? This collection of short stories and novellas might be the answer. If you want fast-paced action and loathe long passages of description, it’s probably not for you. If you enjoy wry humour, detailed characterisation and stories that you’re still pondering about hours later, it’s well worth a look.

Weber’s Greatest Hits – Jamie Purviance Over the years, Weber has released a series of books to accompany its bestselling barbeques. The latest, Weber’s Greatest Hits, has more than 100 recipes for starters, mains (beef, lamb, pork, poultry, fish and shellfish), sides and desserts. Dishes include Chicken Tacos, Salmon Skewers, Zesty Garlic Prawns, Chilli-Rubbed Chicken and, for the traditionalist, Texas Burgers.

Gardening

Make it Minimal There is increasing enthusiasm for a more minimalist garden style, where fewer plants have greater individual impact in a more designed situation with straight lines aplenty, so here are some suggestions for achieving the eect you want. 56

To advertise in The Essential Guide please call 01925 670 731

Decide on the plants you like and that will suit your garden but keep to as few different types as possible. The biggest impact will be achieved if you are selective, for example concentrating on ornamental grasses. Also key is clever use of straight lines, ideally with a few right angles too. Edges must be sharply defined, perhaps using sleepers, other timber or angled metal. Keep plants well back from the border edging so these lines are not interfered with. Colours should fit your preferences and the surroundings but restrict the number of colours for a calmer and simpler effect. Existing features such as sheds or fences can be recoloured or painted to fit in with the colour scheme – otherwise, their current colour will have to be included in that scheme. A stunning minimalist effect can be achieved by using a single type of plant and container – for example, conifers in terracotta containers. The only variation is in the size of the conifer: all colours, textures and plants are the same. Buy different sizes of the same conifer type and clip regularly to maintain the size difference or buy one size and trim lightly to achieve the desired look. Green, in the form of foliage, helps add a feeling of tranquillity to a minimalist garden so include it, perhaps

as a neatly clipped box hedging or as a few bay lollipops in angular containers. Containers must be very plain, ideally straight-sided angular styles in a single colour. An evenly spaced trio of pots, each with a single central plant, provides a perfect choice of container planting. If you like topiary stick to simple tightly clipped spheres or ‘lollipops’, cubes or at most spirals; there is no space for a fantastically sculptured creature if you’re going minimalist! Plants with simple or angular shapes such as iris, alliums, conifers, clipped box, canna or palms are an excellent choice, but opt for personal (but simple) favourites available locally. Grass alternatives such as gravel may feature highly. Gravel needs less maintenance than grass, but keep it weed-free and easy-care by installing a weed-membrane (rather like woven, plastic hessian) on to the soil before putting down the gravel. Thoroughly weed the area then firm and compact well before putting the fabric down. Don’t use cheaper plastic sheeting as rain won’t penetrate. Opt for simple, classically styled garden furniture with as few colours and textures as possible and it won’t detract from the minimalist environment and look – now sit back and enjoy!

Unwidow

I Don’t Know Where The Time Goes! By The Unwidow I simply do not know how I found time to go to work. I find it hard to find enough hours in the day. I still get up at the same time, sometimes earlier and before I do, I list in my mind all the things I intend to do. Not that I get everything done, because I get distracted and it does, I fear take me longer to get through tasks that I would fly through twenty years ago Taking my stairs two at a time, up and down, was second nature, but now I find that not only do I need to pause, but I also need to remember why I am climbing the stairs in the first place. When I get to the top, something else captures my attention, and whatever was my first intention is relegated to ‘maybe later’ Oh, but it is wonderful to be alive. To be able to choose. To not mind a bit if Mr Postie knocks when I am up there, because I can call down…’I’m coming’ and he, unlike other deliverers will call back his agreement to not hare off with my letters before you can say ‘Knock Knock!’ Then we can pass the time of day, and I enquire about his wife’s migraine. That friendly little episode invariably causes my intended expedition to slip un-noticed from my mind, because I had not finished my crossword, and seven across, which temporarily flummoxed me…must be ‘Inebriate!’ How I could have missed that one, I cannot say. (Honestly) Now, where is my pen? A few diligent moments finds it, in the last place I look. Since it is there, there is no need to look in any other places. Better open this mail now There is a reminder that I have to go to the hospital, although I am not at all sure it is necessary. I am perfectly well, and anxious not to cost the NHS more than is vital to my survival, I must ponder upon the matter. Later! Right now, I am busy! There is a lot of junk mail, one promising to look after my funeral with sensitivity and care, 64

which usefully solves another crossword clue…. Seven down is interment. I just wish they had not spoiled a perfectly happy morning with such unsettling mail shots This is indeed a happy morning. The sun is shining, and there are two blue tits playing tag around a very pretty little bush in my garden. One day I will find out the name of that bush, but not now, because I am busy watching Blue tits! Now then, I was about to do something when Mr Postie came. So, it was upstairs, wasn’t it? I will take that letter from the hospital upstairs and file it under ‘lost’. On the other hand, maybe ‘Work in Progress’ No location decision made yet. Ah yes, I was going upstairs to bring down some laundry. That sounds like a plan. That should dry nicely in this sunshine. When I am just about half way up, the phone rings. Another decision! Answer the downstairs or upstairs phone. The distance between them is evenly spaced, when you are half way up, or halfway down, so it matters not. It matters even less because it stops ringing. There was no message. By then I am downstairs again! Gosh, this is a very busy day! Time to make some lunch and count the medication that seems to keep the Funeral Plan sellers at bay. That done, but not the laundry, back upstairs, without the letter from the hospital. Once up there, I see that Blue bins are out for collection, But not mine. Better do that now! No wonder I have no time to go out to work…I have to put my bin out!
