Welcome Readers... ...to our November edition!

There’s definitely a nip in the air, especially on our early morning dog walks. There have been lots of nice sunny days too and we’re using the last of these pleasant weekend days to get our allotment all ready for the winter. Hopefully we’ll be able to get some sprouts, parsnips and maybe potatoes out for our Christmas dinner.

It’s our first year with an allotment and to say we’ve learned a lot is an understatement! Maybe next year I should do an allotment diary?

This month we have an exciting addition to our monthly editorial features and I’d like to introduce you to Jackie, our ‘Unwidow’. Read her heart warming story and amusing anecdotes on page 36 – I’m sure you’ll love her as much as we do in the office.

Seeing the picture of Niamh in last month’s magazine reminded me of the saying about acorns, (I’m quite well read for a dog you know) and I thought that perhaps it must apply to Boxer Dogs as well. The puppy in

PS: Him-indoors says I must acknowledge, like proper writers do, who said the bit about the acorns.

So here goes: It was in an essay by D. Everett written in 1797: “Large streams from little fountains flow, Tall oaks from little acorns grow.”

Now, a bit about me for any new readers...

Some of you might think it strange that a dog writes blogs, well, if a Cat can look at a King, a dog can blog.

I’ve been doing them for a while now though it took a while for me not to get my claws stuck in the keyboard thingy.

I live near Chester with Him and Herindoors and Sam who despite his size, is a real softy (don’t tell him I said that, you know what lads are like). When the whole tribe is together there are thirteen people and six dogs! Us

two Boxers, the two Pugs, Belle and Edward and two mad Collie’s Max and Alfie.

I don’t like Cats, Jack Russell’s or having to get up before half past seven in the morning, but I do like scrambled eggs, tuna and roast potatoes and if they’re all mixed up together, so much the better!

Ok, see you next month and as the Pugs are coming to stay again, I expect I’ll have something to say about them. You know, I’m quite sure that just over two and a half thousand years ago, somewhere in China, there was a very bored Chinaman. “I know,” he said, “I’ll invent something to past the time.” So he did, - Pug Dogs – and the world has never been quite the same since.

THE MOOS OF THE WORLD News from The Grange Farm, Mickle Trafford...

MICKLE TRAFFORD WATER MILL A public consultation is taking place about the future of Mickle Trafford Water Mill and will be held in the meeting room at the farm under the auspices of the new building preservation trust. The trust wants your ideas regarding the future use of the mill, its maintenance, restoration, upkeep, financial viability and use and attractiveness to the community as a whole. Please come to the farm on Wednesday to Friday 18th to 20th November between 18:00 and 21:00 or on Saturday 21st November between 10:00 and 15:00. Submissions are also welcome by email (address below) and by post to Mickle Trafford Mill Trust, Trafford Mill, Warrington Road, Mickle Trafford, Chester CH2 4EB before 21st November.

The current mill dates from 1768, and written records exist of a mill standing on the same site since 1303.

BADGER VACCCINATION This year’s programme to vaccinate badgers against Tuberculosis (TB) has been successfully completed by Neil Copping of Wirral & Cheshire Badger Group, ably assisted

by Kate Pilcher, Nicky Edwards and Francesca Norro. After four weeks of monitoring the badger population, a total of seven animals have been inoculated, greatly reducing the risk of our Red Poll cattle becoming infected.

Thank you to everyone for their hard work in achieving this result.

RED POLL HERD COMPETITION We were amazed and delighted to be told last week that our herd of Red Poll cattle had won the Northern Area competition for best large herd organised by the Red Poll Cattle Society. Judging took place in August, and the

The herd is now due to be judged for the national competition. Our very first Red Poll bull, Ryehills Larry the Lamb, arrived from Derbyshire on 19th July 2002 with two heifers from Nottinghamshire, and the herd now totals around 170 animals including 30 grazing three nature reserves for Lancashire Wildlife Trust.

The Night Sky in November 2015

The brightest of the planets - Venus, Mars and Jupiter - are all close together in Leo in the eastern early morning sky and will make for a spectacular sight. The waning crescent Moon will be close by on the 6-7th of the month.

Look out this month for the Great Square of Pegasus (in mythology, the Flying Horse). This constellation dominates the high southern part of the sky during these autumn months.

The â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Wâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of Cassiopeia lies almost overhead and an imaginary line passing through the 3rd and 4th stars makes a useful pointer. Now find the upper left star in the Square and move 2 stars along to the left. You should see a short line of two stars above the leftmost star. And there very near that star is the Great Andromeda

Galaxy also known as M31. This is the furthest object that can be seen easily with the naked eye (the fainter M33 galaxy is even further away but difficult to see), at around two and a half million light years, or about 15 million million million miles give or take a few miles!

The Leonid meteor shower occurs this month from 15 to 20 November. The maximum is on the 17th-18th, and the sky will be free of interfering light from the moon after midnight. Every 33 years this shower produces a spectacular number of meteors (thousands!) but this year is not one of them. Nevertheless, with a peak rate of 15 meteors per hour, it is worthwhile looking for these meteors which appear to radiate from the constellation of Leo. Saturn and Mercury will not be visible this month as they are in line with the Sun.

Last Blaze of Autumn Colour...

Late autumn and the remnants of flowers are still hanging on but mostly colour comes from tree leaf colour and berries. If you have the right conditions for Acers, that is, well drained yet moisture retentive soil, sheltered position out of early morning sun and wind then they will put on a wonderful display of autumn colour. Acer palmatum Bloodgood has dark crimson foliage but a real star is the locally grown, Acer palmatum Eddisbury. This has bronzy new leaves opening to green then colouring well in autumn.

Berries on Sorbus, the Mountain Ash may still be around especially on varieties like Sorbus Joseph Rock with yellow berries. This compact tree is again good for smaller gardens and grows in an upright manner.

The red berries seem to be eaten by birds first but orange, yellow and cream berries are left well into winter.

Six and Two Threes!

By Jackie Worrall aka The Unwidow It is over a year ago now since I placed one of the nicest guys that ever needed feeding, into the ground and left him there with my parents. He is safe, till I see him again, because when he was taken, I hadn’t finished looking at him.

I shall never, ever forget him, and that is how it should be, but now I will become Unwidowed.

So, with grim determination I perused the local papers, the Internet and asked just about everyone I knew ‘what does an ‘Unwidow’ do around here?’

‘Volunteer!’ Was the cry from sundry friends (and enemies I suspect). ‘Cast off thy skinny jeans, thy biker boots and thy lip gloss... and act as the seventy years old widow that thou art! Be appropriate!’

‘Think ye not of dinner parties, 5-star hotels in Turkey, taking part in activities designed for and exclusive to couples and join something Widowey… or Volunteer!

Believe me, good folks, I did try! I searched diligently for weeks around the town to find that every place I found was inhabited by really lovely people who made me so very welcome but one delightful gentleman’s greeting was ‘OOH! So you’re the NEW WIDOW… you’re a good looking woman...

I’m on me own... I’ll take you for a drink if you like!’… I think he was one of nature’s Volunteers.

I almost drove into the wheelie bins outside that establishment in my haste to escape!

A Yoga class seemed like a good idea. I had never done Yoga. Three elderly ladies (and me), a rather camp but somewhat delicious instructor with a false tan had us lying on the floor of a chilly room for three hours, to the sound of little bells ringing and charged six pounds fifty. If I had a yen to do that, I could spend my six pounds fifty on a drinkable bottle of wine and go and lie down in my garage, until I realised the folly of my ways, at which time I could take the remains of the bottle

(like, almost all of it) indoors and listen to some decent music... not bells ringing!

Weight Watchers? I weigh seven and a half stones... there isn’t much of me to watch!

Zumba, Line Dancing, BINGO! Methinks not! The first two lack dignity and I reckon I would lose the will to live at all after ten minutes of the latter.

I know one widowed man who suddenly lost all his ‘mates’ when his dear wife died because their wives didn’t like their husbands going out for a drink with him in case they ‘met women’! He is shy!

And he won’t go out alone - in case women meet him! And we women thought WE were the only ones embarrassed to go out alone.

So, I thought, I cannot be the only live fish in this pond. I have struck up conversations in the supermarket and at college with two other people like me... NOT bar flies, NOT Knitters and Natterers, NOT Volunteers... they too want to get together with others, go to a decent restaurant, book a holiday in a warmer place than Blighty, see a show, get dressed up and GO but it’s six and two threes, if you are by yourself you have no-one to share it with, and if you have no-one to share it with, you are by yourself!

Since there seems to be no light on right now at the end of this tunnel, I, for one, intend to stomp around until I find the switch, for I’m not done yet, and I’ll let you know how I get on.

Come on guys... Let’s do it... 70 is the new 50!

You may be faced with the task of dealing with the affairs of a friend or relative affairs after their death. This may be because you have been appointed as their Executor under their Will or if no Will was made, then you may be the person who has to deal with Administration of the Estate.

As an Executor or Administrator you are entrusted to make sure you administer the Estate in accordance with the terms of the Will, or alternatively that the estate is distributed in accordance with the Rules of Intestacy. Part of this process will involve ensuring that any debts that the estate owes are paid before the remaining assets can be divided between the beneficiaries who are entitled to receive those assets.

Some debts may not be obvious to a lay executor â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for example there may have been an incorrect assessment of state benefits that only comes to light after the death, or even after the estate has already been distributed to the relevant beneficiaries. This can cause no end of complications for Executors or Administrators.

It is important that people take advice at the start of dealing with an Estate so that they are made aware of any debts that may arise.

Statutory Advertisements can be placed in a local newspaper and the London Gazette that can protect an Executor or Administrator of an Estate from unknown creditors.

Solicitors that specialise in this area of law have an awareness of the type of debts that may arise and can advise appropriately to make sure debts are repaid before the distribution takes place.

Hello, I’m so excited, I’ve just come home from my very first day at Waverton Pre School and can’t wait to tell you all about my adventures.

There were so many things to try out. I played with some new friends in the mud kitchen and we made mud pies and got very mucky (luckily the clever ladies who looked after us made sure we had our waterproofs on!).

I discovered the giant blackboards that were shaped like flowers and got busy with the chalks – I really enjoyed trying to write my name and some of my friends and I had a go at writing our numbers.

Pheweee that number 5 is tricky !

We were able to play on scooters and trikes and learnt how to be safe and look out for each other so we didn’t have a crash!

Inside we sat together in “circle time” and listened to a story about life in another country. It was very interesting and we were able to ask lots of questions.

I have a lady who is my key carer and she helps me to learn new activities and encourages me to do things on my own so that I feel more grown up, she is even teaching me how to make my letter sounds – I am using a book called “jolly phonics”.

I am so glad that my Mummy and Daddy chose Waverton Pre School, I am having a brilliant time and can’t wait until I’m old enough to go to “big school”.

Another season has drawn to a close, and gives a chance to renew our energies for next year. The promotion to Division 6 in the Norley afternoon league was always going to be a struggle, and despite a gargantuan effort in the last few games we still finished bottom though only a handful of points behind the team above us. In the end a few bad defeats on difficult greens at Kingswood and Frodsham were our nemesis, but a great team spirit saw us fight to the end.

We can congratulate ex-Barrow players Lynn McDonald & Peter Snelson, who have done a great job at Castle Park, in coming 1st & 5th respectively in the 6th Division averages.

Chester Riverside Canoe Club Chester Riverside Canoe Club is a local kayaking and canoeing club based on the River Dee in Chester aimed at children aged 8 to 18. It’s a great way for children to learn about how to have fun on the water with a big focus on being safe whilst on the water. The club offers children the opportunity to start achieving awards via the British Canoe Clubs Paddle Power and Star awards and whilst doing this they are honing skills that will lead to them being an effective team member, coach or leader.

Five club members participated in a 3 star white water kayak assessment on the River Dee in Llangollen one Sunday in October. All five were successful in gaining their 3 star award having worked hard with the club coaches in the months running up to the assessment.

The three star award represents the highest level of personal attainment award offered for white water kayaking by British Canoeing, which doesn’t involve river leadership or coaching. It is an assessment which many older more experienced paddlers have failed.

“These kids shouldn’t underestimate the significance of this award”, commented club coach Mark Ebrey following the assessment. “It puts all five members in a strong position to progress onto the formal white water river leadership and

coaching qualifications when they are older”.

Mark Sampson, another coach from the club who has been largely responsible for training the five prior to the assessment said “all 5 have worked really hard, attending extra training sessions which involved both personal skill development and river safety whilst also working on some of the more theoretical aspects of paddling. We hope they will now consider transferring their skills from kayak into open canoes and become more rounded paddlers who are skilled across all disciplines of paddlesport.”

Ian McMullen, club President and British Canoeing Coach of the Year 2014 said “I’m delighted...it just goes to show what youngsters are capable of when they put their mind to it.”

What is... Osteopathy?

This is a question which I am often asked in practice. It can be difficult to answer because practitioners tend to work in different ways and the boundaries between the different professions is becoming less well defined. Every practitioners ultimate goal is to return their patient to good health. I personally have an open minded approach to healthcare and believe that if someone is suffering, they should try whatever works best for them, whether that be Physiotherapy, Chiropractic or Osteopathy.

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a primary care profession, focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders, and the effects of these conditions on patients’ health.

Using many of the diagnostic procedures applied in conventional medical assessment, osteopaths seek to restore the optimal functioning of the body, where possible without the

use of drugs or surgery. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the body has the ability to heal, and osteopathic care focuses on strengthening the musculoskeletal systems to treat existing conditions and to prevent illness.

Osteopaths’ patient-centred approach to health and well-being means they consider symptoms in the context of the patient’s full medical history, as well as their lifestyle and personal circumstances.

According to the General Chiropractic Council (GCC), chiropractic is “a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health”.

Chiropractors use their hands to treat disorders of the bones, muscles and joints. Treatments that involve using the hands in this way are called “manual therapies”.

California is the most notable West Coast destination with a long coastline of sandy beaches, especially in the areas around Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, and San Diego, all of which I have a personal experience of, as myself and my husband made the trip 2 years ago. The majority of the beaches in California provide visitors with sun and warm weather all year round with excellent sunbathing spots and lots of activities.

California boasts more than 700 miles of coastline with miles upon miles of excellent beaches.

Southern California is home to a variety of secluded beaches and some of the best in California.

Malibu beach for instance, is a world renowned spot for attracting celebrities, surfers, and scuba divers. If you prefer a more rugged West Coast beach holiday, why not try out Mountains City Beach, where the mountains reach right down to the sand and you can head out for a hike on the steep slopes after a few hours of sunbathing. Malibu Surf rider Beach is the place to be during the warmer months, if you like me enjoy people watching or are looking to take a leisurely stroll along the famous Malibu pier. It can however get very crowded, it is a great spot for sunning and beach activities and it also provides a great glimpse into the

California beach culture.

If you are looking for the typical West Coast beach holiday, then look no further than Santa Monica.

The perfect beach area is located just west of Los Angeles, making it a prime destination for those visiting the center but also looking to spend time in a quieter area.

Home to the famous Santa Monica Pier and not far from Venice’s Muscle Beach, Santa Monica Beach is easily one of the top beaches in California. It has it all, a combination of sun, sand and a historic Ferris wheel. The beach is very well kept and stretches for 3.5 miles and is the ultimate beach spot for swimming, surfing, and volleyball Further south along the California coast you will find San Diego which boasts some of the most beautiful West Coast beaches.

There are more than 30 public beaches in this area, making it a sun worshipper’s paradise. Much more relaxed, San Diego is a great alternative to the more highmaintenance beaches of the Los Angeles area. La Jolla Shores is a great family-friendly area and is great for swimming and even body boarding and surfing on the northern part. The beaches of the Mission Bay area also are excellent and they boast calmer water and fewer surfers. Coronado Island, across the bay from San Diego has been voted several years running, as having the “Best Family Beach in North America.”

Wherever you decide to visit along the Californian coast you can be rest assured that you will have the largest variety of beaches and the best weather, California’s beach destinations are indeed among the world’s top beaches.
