Hello lovely readers and welcome to the latest edition of our magazine for March.

Spring is definitely sprung As ever we’re packed full of lovely things to read and great suppliers on your doorstep.

I definitely get a spring in my step at this time of year, I’ve been watching the clock every afternoon in the office (no, not for home time!) but to see what time it goes dark, as for me the lighter nights herald the start of all things springy and then summery. So the clocks will move forward on Sunday 31st March - which is also Mother’s Day again this year. Who plans this? Not a mother for sure….

Consequently Easter is later this year, we’ll have a long weekend to look forward late April Good Friday is 19th April. I’m hoping that the weather is good enough to get lots done in the garden, although it is possibly a little too early for hanging baskets and bedding plants? Maybe still a risk of a late frost, but not to early to make plans.

Mini Orange Chocolate Cakes

1 Preheat the oven to 180C, fan 160F, gas mark 4. Use

These lovely little citrus cakes take no time to make and are a delicious sweet treat.

Makes 12 Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling and setting INGREDIENTS 225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 12 mini chocolate cookies 225g golden caster sugar 225g self-raising flour ½ tsp baking powder 4 medium eggs, beaten Juice and zest of 1 orange 100g milk chocolate, melted, plus extra grated, to serve Orange slices, to serve (optional)

the extra butter to thoroughly grease the holes in a 12-hole muffin tray. Line the base of each hole with a circle of baking paper. Drop a mini chocolate cookie into each hole.

2 Place the butter, sugar, flour, baking powder, eggs,

orange juice and zest in a large mixing bowl. Beat with a hand-held electric whisk for 3-4 minutes until smooth and creamy.

3 Spoon the mixture evenly into the holes in the muffin

tray. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes until risen, golden and springy to the touch. Cool in the tin for a few minutes then run a small palette knife around each cake to loosen and turn out on a wire rack. Leave to cool completely.

4 Dip the top of each orange sponge in melted

chocolate and place on a wire rack set over a baking sheet. Leave for 30 minutes or until set. Serve topped with grated chocolate and orange slices, if liked.

TIP These make delicious warm puddings – instead of leaving to cool and dipping in the chocolate, serve warm drizzled with the melted chocolate and with a dollop of whipped cream or crème fraiche.

Sweetly pretty or boldly dramatic, pattern can transform any room.

From simple geometrics to the catwalk-inspired ‘matchy matchy’ look of all-over pattern, eye-catching patterns seem to be everywhere at the moment.

Including pattern brings character to a home, but it may not seem easy to do. Get inspiration from the form of something you own, such as a painting, vase or throw, or from images in magazines, books and websites. Then think about your pattern partiality. Simple, graphic motifs in muted colours, or naturalistic designs in vivid shades? Large scale or small?

Patterns are also subtly present, such as in the weave of fabric or basketry or the grain of timber and should not be overlooked.

Consider where pattern is appropriate: as a subtle element within a room, such as a small blind or a cushion cover; or all-out, from walls and floor to fabrics and accessories. In bigger rooms, use very largescale patterns for impact, while medium- or small-scale patterns are generally better in smaller rooms – though filling a tiny room (e.g. a WC) with a giant pattern can make a feature of it.

Start simple, with just a dash of a single pattern, if you are worried about mixing patterns.

When combining two or more patterns, the professional pattern books from fabric and wallpaper manufacturers can help to see which patterns work together.

To introduce greater variety, create a mood board using swatches of fabrics, wallpapers and paint, and cut-out images of furnishings. Place the dominant pattern first – perhaps the brightest or the one with the largest scale – and add others from there. Swap items in and out, or change their proportions, until it looks right.

For patterns that co-ordinate, complementary colours are key. Lighter and darker versions of the same hue work well together and provide a pleasing variety. A variety of scales also adds interest and impact. Remember that very small-scale patterns are only really noticeable close up, so are a subtle scheme element. Next: density. Loose, open patterns give a visual ‘breather’, while intricate patterns with closely placed designs have more drama. A variety of densities gives balance and interest. And finally: design. Abstract, figurative, retro, traditional, modern – there’s something for everyone, and a coherent mix of patterns will make a room seem like it has evolved naturally over time.

Lowton WI Lowton WI held their first meeting of the year on the 7th February, as usual our theme was keep fit for the new year which featured Walking Netball, the team was led by Anna Leyland who is a coach from “Wigan back

to Sport” Firstly we had a demonstration by members of ‘Wigan Wigglers’ walking netball team, next it was time for our members to have a go,it was lovely to see so many of our members taking part and having a great time, there was certainly a lot of giggling going on.

Hopefully having had a insight as to how much fun this type of exercise is, may inspire some of our members to join the walking netball club on a regular basis.

Heavenly Herbs

If your life lacks a garden, then herbs in window boxes are perfect I’ve always liked to grow herbs in pots – they look pretty, and ornamental variegated forms are available too. More importantly, they can be kept in any well-lit spot close to the house, ideal if your garden soil is wet and soggy, plus they are in easy reach if you fancy perking up the supper with some fresh, zingy herbs. If your life lacks a garden, then herbs in window boxes are perfect. Making 24

a herb planter is easy and inexpensive, and the results should be long-lasting.

You need a good-sized container – terracotta is ideal for these plants, many of which have Mediterranean origins. You also need some good-quality compost, some horticultural grit and (of course) your favourite herbs. A local nursery or garden centre should provide a fantastic array of herbs perfect for your

planter at this time of year.

Some of my favourites include: variegated cream and green sage; ‘Tricolor’ sage, which also has splashes of purple on its leaves; golden lemon thyme (with a great lemony flavour); prostrate rosemary; chives; and golden oregano. Choose herbs you enjoy eating but opt for pretty varieties where available.

Good drainage is essential for a herb pot, so use broken crocks

(such a smashed flower pots or kitchen crockery) laid loosely over the drainage hole(s) before you add compost and gravel.

Always use proper horticultural grit and mix about one-part grit in with three parts compost.

Positioning the plants properly within the container is important.

The plants will get bigger, so allow them room to grow, but – as you’ll be constantly trimming them throughout the growing season – planting a little closer than the plant label suggests should be fine! If you include a trailing or prostrate form of herb, it helps to position it close to the edge so it can cascade downwards. I also suggest you hide the labels around the edges of the pot, just beneath the soil, for later reference.

Once all the plants are in position, fill in all the gaps

between the root balls and around the edges of the container with the compost and grit mixture, firming it in as you go. Next, top dress the compost with grit, which helps to keep drainage good around the plant crowns, makes the planter look better and helps discourage weeds and pests.

Is a hybrid car right for me?

There are good reasons to switch from a petrol or diesel car, such as concerns over environmental impact, tax benefits for low emissions vehicles or simply to save money at the pumps.

Being able to charge a plugin hybrid or range-extending electric car at home is critical, as they benefit most from regular charging. Ranges of around 30 miles on battery power provide a cost-saving regular commute.

Worried about the environment?

There are a few environmental concerns surrounding hybrid vehicles – for example, battery manufacture contributes significantly to the hybrid’s environmental footprint.

The hybrid wins, however, when it comes to local emissions and

air pollution. The ability to run on electricity alone at low speeds helps with particulate emissions.
