Hello lovely readers and welcome to the latest edition of our magazine, as ever packed full of lovely things to read and great suppliers on your doorstep!

Joyfully (for me anyway) the days are getting noticeably longer, and a date for your diary is Sunday 26th March when the clocks move forward at 01:00 hours to 02:00 hours - oh no one less hour in bed! Bad news for us mums as that’s also Mothering Sunday! If you’re still lucky enough to have your mum around (or maybe another mother figure in your life) then why not treat her to breakfast in bed or maybe take her out somewhere for lunch? A time to let her relax a little and for us to say a big thank you! Remember to book in time, as places will be busy.

For some unknown reason I had never realised the date for Mother’s Day as it also more popularly known, is held on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

observed a fast during Lent, the period from Ash Wednesday until Good Friday. During the Lent fast, people did not eat sweet, rich foods or meat.

However, the fast was lifted slightly on Mothering Sunday and many people prepared a Simnel cake to eat with their family on this day. So a little bit of history for us, whatever our background still a nice reason to celebrate motherhood. You learn something every day, something’s more useful than others.

Recipe

Thai Green Curry Makes 4 Ready in: 35 minutes

This classic curry is great for a mid-week family supper – it’s quick to make and tastes delicious!

200g Thai jasmine rice 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 onion, peeled and thinly sliced 2 tbsp Thai green curry paste 1 large red pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced 1 large courgette, sliced 450g chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks 400ml can coconut milk 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp fish sauce Squeeze of lime juice 2 tsp nigella seeds

1. Cook the rice in a large pan of boiling, lightly salted water for about 15 minutes until tender, or follow the packet instructions.

2. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onion for 5 minutes. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the pepper and courgette and fry for a further minute.

3. Add the chicken and cook for 3-4 minutes until no longer pink, stirring all the time. Pour in the coconut milk and simmer gently for 10 minutes until the chicken is cooked. Stir in the soy and fish sauces and lime juice.

4. Drain the rice and use a small heatproof cup or bowl to make four mounds of rice on warmed serving plates. Sprinkle the nigella seeds on top and spoon the curry on the side.

TIP Add a handful of freshly chopped coriander leaves to the curry at the end of cooking time, if liked. Or for a spicier flavour, garnish with shredded red chilli pepper.

Observations of a Waverton Dog Walker

Where there’s muck there’s brass well, so they used to say But courtesy and manners what part do they play?

Walk the lanes of Waverton and the muck is plain to see As tractors trundle up and down dwarfing you and me With the four wheel drives and beemers the brass is there aplenty But what about the manners, surely, you folk are gentry!

I am the grey haired lady with two dogs by her side I would like to wave two fingers but even pedestrians have pride So I step aside and let you pass with your noses in the air I guess I am invisible ’cos you act like I’m not there I mouth THANK YOU and I bow my head, you think it’s just a spasm?

Oh no, it’s much more than that …. It’s called sarcasm For a Transit van or Tesco’s Man I step aside again They smile and nod and wave their thanks, oh what gentlemen They restore my faith in human kind, they are not so self possessed Suddenly I’m visible, my heart smiles, I feel blessed I wander home uplifted, the angst has all but gone The dogs and I enjoyed our walk, and it only takes just one So the next time you’re out driving and a pedestrian you see Take note of what she’s doing, because it might just be ME.

Waverton Parish Walk Sunday 19th March

Please come and join us for a 2 hour walk organised by St Peters Church and Waverton Parish Council to ‘Beat the Bounds ’of the Parish and enjoy afternoon tea provided by St Peters at Burley Hall. ’Beating the Bounds’ is a custom from Anglo-Saxon times to determine and confirm the boundaries of the parish and to keep the footpaths open. The priest of the parish headed a crowd of boys who ’beat’ the parish boundary markers with green boughs. The ceremony had an important practical purpose - to prevent encroachment by neighbours and confirm the boundary for all inhabitants and also a religious purpose – to bless the parish lands for the ensuing harvest. Regular walking of our footpaths is the way to ensure they remain open for us all.

The walk is flat and almost entirely ‘off-road’. There are gates and also a few stiles to climb over.

Andy Leaman is the Waverton Parish Council Volunteer Footpath Warden and will lead the walk.

St Peters Church will be delighted to help you round off an afternoon in the fresh air with tea and cakes in the Burley Hall.

Meet in the Burley Hall Car Park ( opposite St Peters Church in Old Waverton) to leave at 2pm. It may be muddy and much of the walk is over the fields so please come prepared. Children and dogs are very welcome although it is not pushchair friendly. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible next month.

Do you own assets together with another person?

Do you know how the ownership of those assets would pass in the event of either death?

Most people expect that even where they own title to assets jointly with another person, each person is able to leave their share of that asset to their chosen beneficiaries under the terms of their respective Wills; however that is not always the case.

The term ‘assets’ has a wide and varied meaning and can mean a home, a second property, a piece of land, a business asset or even a joint investment such as a shareholding or bank account.

Scenario Perhaps, for example, you inherit an asset under a person’s Will but you inherit it alongside the deceased’s other family or friends.

You may expect that you can then leave your share of that asset to your own beneficiaries under the terms of your Will – but that would depend on whether ownership was held as joint tenants or tenants in common.

The word ‘tenants’ in this instance even applies to buildings and is simply an archaic way of describing ownership.

Joint tenants vs tenants in common Say three people (for example) were to own a property as Joint tenants; each of the three owners would be entitled to 100% of the property title. This means that joint owners do not hold an identifiable share of property title and are instead entitled to the property in its entirety. Thus, on the death of one joint owner, the remaining two retain 100% of the property title so that no ‘share’ passes into the deceased owner’s estate. The last surviving joint owner would have sole ownership of 100% property title.

If however, three people were to own a property as

tenants in common then each of the three owners would hold an identifiable share of the title.

This could either mean they each hold an equal share or, perhaps if one person contributed more towards the purchase price or renovations, they could hold a share of the title proportionately. Thus on the death of any owner, their identifiable share of the property passes to their own beneficiaries under the terms of their Will or Intestacy.

Of course, it is usually a good thing to be able to leave your share of any asset to your chosen beneficiaries but it is not without complications. If all three original owners left their shares to another three beneficiaries the number of people entitled to the equity in the property rises. As does the number of people entitled to live in the property! And what if any of the beneficiaries were minors at the time they inherited.

There are benefits to owning as tenants in common however, such as the ability to estate plan or protect a share of the property from future marriages or financial assessments. So it is important to make an informed decision and deal with property title in accordance with your wishes and intentions.

First Ride:

Honda VFR1200F GT DCT Glance at the handlebars of this Honda VFR1200F and it can take a while to notice something is missing – even hard-nosed bikers will struggle to spot that this sports tourer is lacking a clutch lever.

You see, this is Honda’s DCT automatic model, a sort of giant, grown-up twist and go scooter that’s not nearly as horrifying to ride as it might sound. Most bikers will find the idea of losing control of the gears and letting a computer do the shifting for them a cardinal sin – and I’ll happily admit I was one of them – but then I learned to live with the Honda, and you know what: I think most riders will find it hard to go back to a ‘normal’ bike again.

Hop on board the Honda and you’ll find the semiautomatic transmission doesn’t feel as far removed from a standard gearbox after all. The rider selects drive at the push of a button on the handlebars and that familiar ‘clonk’ of a bike’s gear being engaged is still apparent.

However, pulling away requires no slipping of the clutch or fumbling with your feet – you simply let the bike take care of swapping cogs and concentrate on riding. You can do it yourself via buttons on the handlebars, but chances are you probably won’t.

That paragraph won’t convince many bikers to change to a DCT any time soon, but I can assure you as a devout gear shifter I’ve quickly learned to love it.

In fact, the VFR1200F has won me over in more ways than one. It helps that it’s got a glorious engine. The liquid cooled V4 lump produces 173bhp and is good for 165mph. It sounds wonderful and as the revs increase your helmet is filled with an intoxicating warble. You’ll find it quite addictive.

On the road it feels stable and solid to ride. The confidence it inspires in the corners right from the off makes it an easy bike to get on with, and one you’ll want to use whatever the weather. Rarely do you ride a bike that feels as stable in the wet as it does in the dry, but this Honda certainly does.

The VFR is practical too. Our test model features luggage that comes as standard on the GT model, which consists of a top box and panniers (£725 optional extra on other models). These are easy to operate with the ignition key and fit everything you’ll need for a weekend away, or will cope admirably with an ad-hoc trip to the supermarket. The heated grips (costing £250 usually but standard on this GT) are a welcome addition too. They warm up quickly and lightly toast your fingers on colder morning rides.

The usual excellent Honda build quality is very much apparent. The fit and finish of the switchgear is beautiful and feels like it justifies the £14,599 price tag. The shaft drive is refined and convenient, reducing on cleaning rituals and cuts down on the need for maintenance.

There’s a lot to love about the VFR1200F. Once you get over the initial shock of not having to grab a clutch, the VFR really is easy to fall for. Practical, comfortable, incredibly swift and great fun – it’s very close to being the perfect all-rounder you’ve always promised yourself.

Barrow Bowling Club Beware the Ides of March! Why! Well, unless we have an unknown Brutus or Cassius in our midst, by the 15th, you should be preparing yourself for the forthcoming Crown Green Bowls season.

The story so far. Our regular follower will know that our epic battle in the Norley afternoon League last season has led us to promotion to the dizzy heights of Division 6. We are still awaiting the finalised 2017 fixture list, but we normally start in early April, so it is time to clean those woods, and get onto the green for a little practice.

The Wednesday evening Frodsham league starts on 19th April at home to Helsby with an earlier than usual 6.30 start. We consolidated our mid table position last year (or managed to avoid relegation if you prefer it) so plenty of challenge for the season to come.

There will be informal group practice sessions on our playing field green from 2pm on Mondays, and also late Sunday afternoons, starting around 4.30, with the incentive of a possible visit to the White Horse to restore our fluid balance.

We would certainly like to encourage new members, and that includes those who have thought of starting or returning to Bowls. We have Club woods so that you can try the game out before you invest, and you will find us a friendly lot.

End of Tax Year - Spruce Up Get your personal finances into shape by making the most of all the allowances and exemptions available before the end of the tax year.

Tax allowances and exemptions usually come with a deadline attached, and all the more so when squeezed government finances are creating pressure for policy shifts. As the end of the tax year on 5 April approaches, now would be a good moment to review your finances.

Perhaps the most useful allowance is the Individual Savings Account (ISA), which allows investments to build up without any further tax to pay on income and capital gains. Everyone has their own allowance – £15,240 in the current tax year – which means that couples can shelter £30,480 between them.

There is also a Junior ISA annual allowance of £4,080 for children under the age of 18. Anyone – family or friend – can contribute to the fund, which cannot be accessed until the child reaches 18, when they will get full control over the money.

The ISA allowance will rise to £20,000 from April, but any unused allowance from this tax year will be lost.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go up or down. You may get back less than you invested.

The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may not be maintained in the future and is subject to changes in legislation.

The Night Sky Jupiter rises in the east at about 10 pm at the beginning of the month and at about 9.30 pm by April 1. The Moon will be very close to Jupiter on March 14th.

Spring Arrives In spring, the stars are the bulbs, especially the many varieties of daodil, early tulips and the wood anemone, Anemone nemerosa or Anemone blanda. The Anemones are low growing with daisy like flowers in white, blue or lilac. They like woodland edge conditions with crumbly moist soil and will gradually spread. They will also flower well in pots for a long time.

Other early flowering plants include Lungwort or Pulmonaria varieties. I love these plants which in ideal conditions (moist, rich crumbly soil, out of full sun) will form a large plant about 60cms in diameter with lovely mottled green and silver foliage. Great for ground cover around taller plants. In spring before the leaves form fully, they send up stems of blue or pink flowers to 25cms tall. Plant with Brunnera varieities, which like similar conditions. Brunnera also have handsome foliage in green, silver or cream and have stems of blue forget me not flowers in early spring. Another welcome early flowerer are primroses or primulas that will have been

flowering on and off since December. However, early spring is the best season. These hedgerow plants fill in gaps at the front of the border or grow well in pots.

Some shrubs flower early too. Forsythia will come out with bright yellow flowers, Ribes or flowering currants will have pink or cream flowers depending on variety and Pieris shrubs will start to flower with tiny white or sometimes pink waxy bell like flowers.

I usually plant my tomato seeds inside to germinate.

Then gradually harden them off before planting out in the garden when all frosts have gone. Although the tomatoes ripen later than when in a greenhouse, I still get lots to eat from September onwards. Green tomatoes even ripen indoors well into November, if left on a warm windowsill!

Make sure your roses are pruned by March. They come into bud early in the year when the weather is mild.

Give them a feed with a proprietary rose fertilizer. I also feed all my plants in March with a pelleted fertilizer such as Growmore that gradually releases nutrients.

As our gardens start to grow and blossom fills the trees, it’s time to think about refreshing and re-energising our homes ready for a stylish spring.

Clear the clutter There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned tidy up!

Heavy winter duvets, furry throws and cable-knit hot water bottles can all be stored out of the way, while at the same time this is a good opportunity to go through shelves and cupboards and get rid of anything you no longer need. If it’s broken, mend it or throw it away; don’t let worn out, unusable and unnecessary items take up space.

And, try to dry laundry in the sunshine outdoors – you can’t beat that beautiful fresh smell.

Bring the outdoors in Now the warmer weather is here, open the windows and get some air circulating around your home. It might even be warm enough to sit outside, so think about pressure washing your patio, scrubbing up your barbecue and cleaning down your outdoor furniture.
