Palm Beach is a sun-soaked paradise by the water, making it a dream location for boaters. The city’s many marinas and yacht clubs have helped establish it as a boating haven, as has its massive annual boat show. The Palm Beach International Boat Show is a major event that draws tens of thousands of attendees and contributes significantly to the local economy. This year, the show will expand with a biggerthan-ever addition, offering more of what people love about this iconic event.

The Palm Beach International Boat Show is a grand spectacle held along Flagler Drive in downtown West Palm Beach, directly across from Palm Beach Island. It features a suite of exhibiting brands, boats on display both on land and water, and high-end entertainment. This year, the Palm Beach International Boat Show has announced it will run for an extra day, turning this event into a five-day shopping extravaganza. The show will be held from March 19th to March 23rd.

The show first began in 1982 as a way to consolidate options for boating enthusiasts and celebrate the incredible boating culture of the area. In the more than 40 years since its inception, it has risen to become one of the premier boating events in the country. It is a major economic engine for the area and an ideal place for residents and visitors to explore a wide range of boating supplies and luxury vessels. Good morning Rob and Christopher, thanks for meeting with us today. Rob, welcome back, it’s good to see you again, and Christopher, it’s a pleasure to meet you. We’ve followed Rob’s career over the years; Christopher, tell us how you and Rob came together.

Christopher (C): Rob and I go back 8 years to when I first came into the boat business. Rob was the topperforming salesperson at the dealership and the GM had the two of us spend some time together during my interview process. Rob graciously acted as a Mentor after I was hired. He and is I have worked closely together ever since. Our careers took us in different directions through the Marine Industry, and we came back together this December to make our shared vision of the future a reality.

Funny how things work out Chris. Rob, can you tell us a little about this “shared vision of the future?”

R: Christopher and I have been top performers at some of the best known boat dealerships in Florida, and learned invaluable lessons from these

elite companies. But we are both entrepreneurs at heart and had been chafing against the rigid corporate structure that is characteristic of larger corporations. This past December we realized that market was ready for our vision and that the time was right to start our own Brokerage. That’s the “Why” and I’ll let Christopher expand on the “What”.

OK Rob, that’s a smooth hand-off, Christopher, give us the “Vision.”

Christopher (C): The Vision began for me years before I entered the industry, during my boat buying experiences over the years. I wanted to create the experience I wish I had had, as opposed to the one I did have. But, and this is no knock on traditional dealerships since there are inherent limits to their business model, I wasn’t able to realize my vision for the Client experience as a dealership employee. I think Rob has summed it up well by saying, “Sir, you’re in a BMW dealership, we don’t sell Mercedes, or Bentley’s. But let me tell you why you need

a BMW.” At the end of the day, we are creating a bespoke experience not just for the mega-yacht purchaser, who should already be getting that, but for the people we most frequently work with who are buying boats in the $500,000$2,500,000 range. We’ve sold $250,000 boats and $5,000,000 ones, but those are the exceptions, not the rule and our

target customers are put into a box in the traditional dealership experience.

What do you mean by “Put in a box”?

R: Going back to my regularly used analogy of, “You’re in a BMW dealership”. Many dealerships offer 1, 2, 3 or even 6 or 7 brands but they specifically, and contractually, don’t compete

with each other. So a customer in a dealership is offered one brand in the class they are looking for. And a skilled salesperson will be able to highlight the features and benefits of that boat that are of most importance to the customer. But is that necessarily the right boat for them? It’s definitely the right boat for the salesman and the dealership, but that is not the deciding factor when it comes to a Client’s substantial financial commitment. The tagline on our logo says it all, “Clients First”. And that’s what we offer. Rather than fitting our clients into a brand because that’s what we sell, we find the brand that’s right for the customer.

So I’m a little confused. I understand the dealership model where they sell new boats of specific brands and used boats they’ve taken on trade. And I understand the brokerage model where a broker represents a buyer or seller of a used boat, but this sounds like something different.

C: Well, that is the essence of our Vision. Brokerage is brokerage and as Employing Brokers, The Yacht Experts handles the buy and sell-side of traditional brokerage transactions. But we have agreements with numerous dealerships and directly with several new boat brands, to offer their boats to our customers. Think of us as a “virtual dealership” where we can provide almost any boat brand, new or used, that is best suited to our clients needs. It sounds so simple, but it is actually revolutionary. Most importantly it is a win for the customer. Our fiduciary responsibility and loyalty is to our customer, not a dealership or a brand. Who wouldn’t want that experience?

That sounds really interesting but I’m curious, why would a dealership work with you?

R: This model has existed for years in the car market. In-fact, this model was the synthesis of the idea. I’ve used an independent broker for years to get me the right car at the right price. I haven’t set foot in a car dealership in 20 years but have bought 20 cars during that time. Car dealerships are very accustomed to dealing with brokers, but nobody seems to have done it on the boat side. We are fortunate to have built strong reputations in the industry, and have had the luxury of curating an array of brands and dealership partners that we know will serve our customers well. We are also fortunate that Clients have embraced our model in the short period of time we have offered it.

OK, that’s a lot of fascinating information and I’m sure our readers would like to know more but just so I fully understand, is this truly a unique concept?

C: This isn’t an idea you can patent, and I don’t know if it’s being done at all in the Marine Industry. Certainly not on a high-level or large scale basis. Remember, the big brokerage firms are also dealers but typically for yachts. But they have welcomed us and our clients, and our Clients avoid the huge overhead and inherent conflicts of interest associated with this traditional model.

In an exclusive interview with HAVEN, Kristin shared insights into the design process.

Paton on Her Design Process at the Kips Bay Showhouse

HAVEN: The Kips Bay Show House is a prestigious event in the design world. What was your role in this year’s Palm Beach showcase?

Kristin: We were selected to design the second-floor primary closet and the adjoining terrace. Instead of a traditional closet, we envisioned a sophisticated dressing room with a connecting outdoor retreat —a space to enjoy a cocktail and the ocean breeze while awaiting evening plans.

HAVEN: What inspired your design approach?

Kristin: It all started with a carved elephant console from F.S. Henemader. That piece set the tone for an Anglo-Indian aesthetic—classic, refined, and evocative of the British West Indies. The closet became a jewel box, swathed in high-gloss chocolate brown with a rattan-inspired ceiling treatment, a Vaughan Designs Persian lantern, and a Tuareg carpet. Outside, the terrace is more playful, featuring Circa Who peacock chairs, a shell mirror, and a straw bar for a relaxed yet polished feel.

HAVEN: Did you face any challenges?

Kristin: The biggest challenge was time. Showhouses move quickly, and we had to balance this project with our client work. Fortunately, the Florida design community was generous, allowing us to incorporate extraordinary antiques.

HAVEN: You design homes across the globe. Do you have a signature style?

Kristin: My foundation is in classical design, but I tailor each project to my clients’ needs. Whether contemporary or traditional, my focus is always on strong architectural bones and refined materials. I do love vacation homes like those in Nantucket and Palm Beach, where clients are more open to creative risks.

HAVEN: Is this your first time participating in the Kips Bay Show House?

Kristin: Yes, and it has been an incredible experience. It’s a major time and financial commitment, but it supports a great cause and offers the opportunity to push creative boundaries. We’re honored to be part of it.
