A MESSAGE FROM EKUNDAYO I recently found myself in a friendly debate with a friend over the merits of Motown versus Stax.

While I was busy championing Hattiloo Theatre’s production of A Motown Christmas, my friend was firmly planted in the Stax camp. We even had a playful exchange where I jokingly referred to our show as a “Staxtown Christmas” to acknowledge both legendary music labels.

Of course, I chose to produce this musical because it’s a guaranteed way to provide a festive gathering place for families and friends. But beyond the box office appeal, there’s a deeper, more personal connection to Motown for me. It’s not just the music, though that’s undeniably fantastic. It’s the story of a group of Black people coming together, fueled by talent and ambition, to create something truly extraordinary. It’s a story that resonates with me deeply, especially as someone who grew up in a household that celebrated Motown’s legacy.

When I founded Hattiloo Theatre in 2006, I drew inspiration from the spirit of the open mic scene. I remember those nights, packed with hopeful artists, eager to share their work with a supportive audience. We’d gather at the Jack Robinson Studio; a modest space just blocks away from the National Civil Rights Museum and create magic. No one was paid, but the rewards were immeasurable. We were building community, fostering creativity, and laying the groundwork for future generations of artists.

The Speakeasy, an open mic night I founded and hosted at the studio, was a cornerstone of this movement. It was a place where poets, musicians, and performers could experiment, grow, and connect with their audience. It was a microcosm of the Motown dream—a group of talented individuals coming together to create something special.

As we approach the holiday season, we all need a little magic in our lives. A Motown Christmas is that sprinkle of magic, a reminder of the power of human creativity and the enduring impact of great music. It’s a chance to relive the golden age of Motown, to feel the joy and excitement of those early days, and to experience the transformative power of music.

A Motown Christmas - Step back in time to the golden era of Motown, a period of soul-stirring music and cultural revolution. A Motown Christmas invites you on a nostalgic journey through the hits and heart of this iconic era.

Join a group of 14 friends as they transform into legendary Motown artists, bringing to life the timeless classics that have shaped generations. From the soulful crooning of Smokey Robinson to the energetic performances of The Temptations, every note and every dance move will transport you to the heart of Detroit and the American Bandstand Television era.

The play’s stunning set, designed by David Galloway, features the iconic Hitsville U.S.A. house, a symbol of Motown’s legacy. As the characters perform, they’ll be surrounded by the festive spirit of the holiday season, drawing inspiration from three beloved Motown Christmas albums “Jackson 5 Christmas Album,” “Merry Christmas from Motown,” and “A Motown Christmas.”

Get ready to sing along, dance, and relive the magic of Motown as our friends take you on a heartwarming and unforgettable journey orchestrated by Patricia Smith and the production team.

Guests will be transported through time while viewing curated exhibits, the actual apartment Berry Gordy lived in with his family during the label’s earliest days, along with original recording equipment and the legendary Studio A. Each tour is led by a knowledgeable guide, who will share the interesting history, fascinating anecdotes and captivating stories that all took place at Hitsville U.S.A.

MARY ANDRUS Carmine

Mary Andrus is a proud Memphian, she has been with Hattiloo Theatre since 2006 and is extremely excited to delve into the art of singing. She wants to thank her family and friends for always supporting her and hopefully with this musical they leave with joy in their hearts.

Jabria Chanel is excited to make her debut on the Hattiloo stage, but she is not new to performing. Jabria started singing at age six and performing at age nine. She was seen as Dorothy in The Wiz

After a long time away from the stage she’s excited to join the Hattiloo family in their production of A Motown Christmas. Her screen experience comes from her participation in Christmas at Graceland, Texas Heart, and Young Rock. She is more than excited to use this production of Motown Christmas as a springboard to furthering her performance career. Justin Raynard Hicks was born in Dallas, TX. After moving to

Memphis, TN at 7, Justin began studying singing, acting, and dance. At the age of 15, Justin performed the Isaac Hayes' Oscar award-winning hit "Theme from Shaft", at the 2011 TvOne JUSTIN RAYNARD HICKS Trumpet Awards in Atlanta, GA in honor of Richard Roundtree for Raleigh his role in the 1971 film "Shaft". Since then, Justin has performed nationally and internationally at venues such as the Apollo Theater, Lincoln Center, Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Kennedy Center, and The Gibson Showcase Museum in Berlin, Germany.

CAST BIOS Since 2016, Justin has starred in over 5 productions at Hattiloo Theatre, Dreamgirls at Playhouse on The Square as “Wayne” as well as his Memphis’ Ostrander nominated role in "Fences" at Theatre Memphis, where he portrayed "Gabriel". Justin is excited to be back on the Hattiloo stage.

A graduate of Lane College, Grant finds interest in starring in roles that provide outstanding theatrical experience to enrich the lives of the audience.

Adrian Kennard is a Memphis, Tennessee native with a deep admiration for theater and a vibrant stage presence. Although he has always been drawn to the performing arts, it wasn't until

recently that he embraced acting as a pursuit. His talent was recognized with a nomination for an Ostrander Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Division 2 play for his role in “A Stubborn Holiday,” written and directed by Mary Washington at The Actors Renaissance Theater at Theater Works. This marks Adrian's exciting debut at Hatiloo Theater.

Raven Martin is honored to work with Hattiloo Theatre in her second musical. She has a long-standing acting career working with Memphis theatre companies such as Bluff City Tri-Art

Cleavon Meabon, IV is native to Wynne, Arkansas, and grew up in the mid-south, including Memphis. He attended Howard University as a musical theatre major. Since then, his career in entertainment has extended to theatre, television, film, and radio for over 10 years. He is most notable as a writer and director after producing productions in Atlanta, G,A and Washington, DC. Most recently, he founded AUD - an artistic advocacy collective and platform. He is very passionate about social justice and equity. He is very excited to be performing again and hopes to collaborate with more Memphians.

Justin Allen Tate is a native of Memphis, TN. He has been a Professional Actor/Singer & Dancer for 20+ years. National Broadway Tour Credits include : Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Flashdance & Cirque Dreams. His favorite regional credits include: Kinky Boots ( Lola ) , Ragtime ( Coalhouse ), Hello Dolly (Cornelius). Performed nine seasons with the Opera Memphis Chorus in several productions such as Carmen, Turandot, Porgy and Bess, and Macbeth to name a few. Performed at Hattiloo Theatre’s Once on This Island, Aida, The Wiz, and at Playhouse on the Square in The Color Purple and the Gospel at Colonus. Mr. Thomas has also worked with artists such as the late Natalie Cole, Edwin and Walter Hawkins, Daryl Coley, and Memphis’ own Kirk Whalum, along with Peabo Bryson.

Nicholas Weaver, originally from Tacoma, WA, made his theatrical debut on Hattiloo’s stage and is excited to be back.

Professionally, he’s a healthcare advocate addressing health needs through grantmaking. He’s a lover and student of the arts.

He’s no stranger to music. He sang background for Jennifer Hudson and various indie artists. Nicholas is excited to be a part of this amazing show and dedicates his performance to the memory of both his father, Wendell, and brother, Ryan.

MEET THE HATTILOO STAFF EKUNDAYO BANDELE (Hattiloo Founder & CEO) founded Hattiloo in 2006. Among his directing credits are August Wilson’s “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” and Katori Hall’s “Hurt Village.” From 2012 - 2014, he spearheaded a $4.3M capital campaign that resulted in the construction of Hattiloo’s 14,000-square-foot venue that opened debtfree in 2014. Also, in 2014, he worked as an assistant to Tony Award-winning director Ruben Santiago Hudson at the Williamstown Theatre Festival’s production of “Paradise Blue.” In 2017, he co-led, with Teresa Eyering, Theatre Communication Group’s executive director, a theatre management course at the University of Orduman in Khartoum, Sudan. In 2019 he produced “Ain’t Misbehavin” at Spazio Teatro No'hma in Milan, Italy. In 2020, Hattiloo returned to Milan with “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill,” and again in July 2023 with “Mahalia: Queen of Gospel Music.” Ekundayo is a Fellow at the DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland. He is a recent graduate of Morehouse College.

HATSHEPSUT BANDELE (Customer Service Coordinator), is passionate about celebrating and promoting Black art and culture. Working at Hattiloo brings her joy as she wholeheartedly believes in the power of the arts. In her role, she is committed to ensuring that each visitor feels genuinely welcomed and well-informed about the upcoming plays and events at Hattiloo. Handling ticket sales and subscriptions, she strives to deliver customer service that reflects my appreciation and pride in everything Hattiloo represents.

Sulaiman Mausi Jr. (Resident Theatre Associate) is a recent graduate of Morehouse College in Spring 2023. He received his Bachelor's degree in Theater Performance and has been helping out at Hattiloo Theater ever since. He has recently starred as Steve Harrison in Hattiloo Theatre’s Succession and is excited to be a part of more productions in the future.

PATRICIA SMITH (Theatre Production Manager) has an extensive resume which includes her most recent performance as Judge Dunbar on NBC's Bluff City Law. She performed in Ain't Misbehavin and Asst. Directed Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, both in Milan, Italy. She directed Hattiloo's Black Nativity with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. She has many credits performing, directing, and costuming shows here at Hattiloo Theatre, however, most recently she directed and costumed "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill" and "Marie and Rosetta". She was last seen performing in "Raisin" the musical as Lena Younger.

ROSANNA SMITH (Office Manager) a Tennessee native from southwest Memphis, is the eldest of nine children born to Rev. J. W. Smith, Sr., and Lillie B. Smith. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1967 and attended the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Her career began in 1970 as a Reservationist at American Express, followed by a role as an Office Manager at Murphy Oil Company.

Rosanna earned an Associate Degree in Accounting and Data Processing from Memphis School of Commerce in 1973 and worked as an assistant bookkeeper at Goodwill Industries before joining Kroger in 1974. She served as an accounting clerk and office manager at Kroger until her retirement in 2002. After retirement, she worked at Katz Worldwide Logistics and the Shelby County Health Department until late 2013.

In her religious community, Rosanna was an Administrative Assistant and Church Clerk at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church for 33 years and held various educational roles at Kimbrough Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Lamar, Mississippi. She has received numerous awards and certificates for her contributions to Christian education and community service.

JARROD WALKER (Theatre Manager) an imaginative trailblazer, is fueled by an inherent passion for creativity. Jarrod has immersed himself in event coordination, theater direction, and product launches for over two decades. Whether orchestrating weddings, plays, or other significant life events, his ability to infuse creativity into every project is the driving force behind his success.

As an accomplished event professional, administrative assistant, and theater director, he is dedicated to crafting unparalleled experiences for his clients and audiences. From providing essential administrative support to executing productions, he has played a pivotal role in turning clients’ dreams into tangible realities. For Jarrod Walker, the possibilities are boundless when creativity takes center stage, and his journey continues to be a testament to the transformative power of artistic innovation.

NAJWA WATSON (Engagement Coordinator) a Memphis native of Jamaican descent, brings over 14 years of administrative expertise to her role at Hattiloo Theatre. Her commitment spans nearly 15 years, reflecting a profound dedication to community and service. Najwa excels in organizing, project support, delivering exceptional customer service, and coordinating special events. Hattiloo is not just her workplace but her second home, where she contributes proudly as a professional, performer, and creative force.
