Hattiloo is a 501(c)3 mission non-profit organization. Its mission is "to develop a Black theatre that is accessible to, relevant to, and reflective of a multicultural community." It produces shows that depict Black life and that transcend their entertainment value by giving audiences an authentic, cultural experience Its program The Self-Identity Theatre Camp helps Black youth acquire tools to care for their emotional selves in inequitable and discriminatorysituations.
As the largest Black theatre in the Mid-South andoneofafewfree-standingBlacktheatresin the country, Hattiloo is a hub for national Black theatre training and convening, and our youth programssharethisfocus.
I remember the day I opened Hattiloo. It was a dream realized, a testament to the power of Black artistry. Yet, a nagging question persisted: Why were so few Black voices echoing through from the stages in Broadway and LORT theatres? It seemed a glaring omission, a systemic oversight.
I journeyed to a number of these predominantly white institutions, impressed by their grandeur and resources. But they lacked a certain soul, a raw authenticity that resonated with the heart Allthesame, manyBlackartistsyearnedforaseatatthetable, avoiceinthe narrative.Itwasaconstantstruggle,abattleforrepresentation.

The summer of 2020 was a watershed moment, a catalyst for profound change. The brutalmurderofGeorgeFloydignitedafirestormofprotestandintrospection, forcing institutions across the nation to reckon with their complicity in systemic racism. The theatreworldwasnoexception. The"WeSeeYouWhiteAmericanTheatre"movement emerged, demandinggreaterrepresentationforBlackartists.Forme, itwasaclarion callformoreagencyandsupportforBlacktheatreartists, ademandfortheresourcesto developandproduceourownstoriesoutsidetheconfinesofthepredominantlywhite theatrestructure.
Broadway responded with a historic season, featuring seven plays written by Black playwrights.Amongthemwas"ThoughtsofaColoredMan,"apoignantexplorationof theBlackmaleexperience.Tome, aseasonedperformerandspokenwordartist, the playevokedtherawenergythatIexperiencedthroughthe90sintheBrooklynMoon, thePattiHutinAtlanta, andPreciousCargoinMemphis—hallowedspaceswhereBlack
voices soared. I saw myself in those characters, their bravado, vulnerability, humor, and pain.
For those unfamiliar with the vibrant world of Black performance, "Thoughts of a Colored Man" is a revelation. It offers a glimpse into a cultural tapestry, a barbershop philosophy, a brotherhood forged in shared experiences. It was a triumph, no doubt. Yet, a sense of unease lingered in me. Was this progress, or a mere spectacle? A curated experience, packaged and sold for mass consumption?
The play's success, both critical and commercial, raised questions about the equity, diversity, and inclusion bandwagon. Had the very movement that sought to amplify Black voices inadvertently led to their exploitation? I don't have the answers. But one thing is certain: the fight for representation continues. As we strive for a more equitable theatre world, we must remain vigilant, ensuring that our stories are told on our own terms.

Dawn breaks in Brooklyn, and seven black men rise to meet the day. One of them, a finance director, leaves his luxurious condo to jog around their rapidly gentrifying neighborhood, just as a grocery store clerk is starting another soul-crushing shift. At the bus stop, two best friends debate the intricacies of modern dating, while a basketball coach at the youth center grapples with his unrealized potential. At the hospital, a teacher and his father-in-law welcome a new life. At the barbershop, the whole group meets for cuts and conversation as sparks fly over questions of identity and community. Through the storytelling style of SLAM Narrative, THOUGHTS OF A COLORED MAN celebrates the hopes, ambitions, joys, and triumphs of black men in a world that often refuses to hear them.
Keenan Scott II Keenan Scott II, a playwright, poet, actor, director, and producer from Queens, NY, has had his work developed at theaters like National Black Theater, NYTW, Arena Stage, and Woolly Mammoth. His play Thoughts of a Colored Man premiered at Syracuse Stage (2019-20) before its Broadway debut (2021-22), where Scott also made his acting debut. A 2021 TED Fellow, Scott's new musical, The Return of Young Boy, is slated for a regional premiere in the 2025-26 season. He also has numerous film and television projects in development. In 2020, Scott founded Project Toys Entertainment, a creative studio spanning theatre, TV, film, and visual art, dedicated to bringing joyful and thoughtprovoking content to audiences of all ages.
