& Editor’s Letter Welcome to the September edition of the Hathersage News, with updates on places and events such as there are, and lots of interesting articles about life during lockdown and easing of lockdown. We have articles about gardening and caring in the community, a jumble without the sale, a consultation from the cement works, birthdays and memorials and a new fairy tale from the players called Lockdonia! Thank you to everyone who has contributed and if anyone has anything they wish to appear in the magazine, especially if there are photos please email it to hathersagenews@gmail.com The front cover this month is a photo of the belfry of the parish church. Many people have asked about the clock at St Michael and All Angels because recently while it was striking the quarters, it was not striking the hours. No-one was allowed in to the church to fix this during lockdown, but we are glad to report that David Monks and Smith’s of Derby repaired it last week and it is now ringing out. They did say that the motors are now 50 years old and probably should be replaced.

I have always enjoyed the Heritage Open Days events in September every year https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/ when lots of hidden places are opened and open ones have tours and events. Most in person events are cancelled this year, so I have enrolled St Michael and All Angels and set up a virtual tour of the church with points of interest added. Search for Hathersage and you will see the Virtual Tour advertised, thank you to Peter Miles for assisting with the history.

& Letter from St Michael and All Angels Parish Church September is the start of a new academic year and I have been thinking about our eldest granddaughter who should have taken her GCSE exams in May and June.

Lockdown brought about an abrupt end to her expectations and plans; no exams and no prom. She will commence sixth form college this month following almost six months of little engagement with the education process. Yes, I am a concerned grandparent and I know that I will not be the only one!

On a positive note, a new academic year will bring new opportunities for a number of our young people who will embrace the challenge of furthering their education.

Talking of things new, Hathersage has a new vicar (hooray!) Dr Paul Moore will be taking up his position as Priest in Charge hopefully in November. Paul and his wife Lucy, will be moving into the vicarage with their dog Minnie.

Initially it will be more difficult for Paul to get to know people owing to Covid restrictions, and his licensing service will probably be somewhat different to the norm. We live in very strange times and are concerned about village life getting back to normal. However, it is important to remain positive as we have all embraced new ways of doing things, including on-line shopping, talking to our families using Zoom, consulting with the doctor on-line and yes, church via Zoom as well!

God is a God of new beginnings, and as we struggle with the limitations which lockdown has brought about, He does not change; Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. This is the great thing regarding the Christian faith, it does offer hope. No matter how bad or dismal our circumstances are or seem to be, Jesus can be a comfort if we allow Him access to our lives.

Evidently, there has been a lot of Google activity around prayer; up by 50% in March. People seem genuinely interested in finding out about prayer and how to pray owing to the current pandemic. Christian prayer is personal and built on a relationship with Jesus. It makes a difference, and is a communication process between us and Him, not empty words bouncing off the walls. There is a Christian cliché which says, ‘Prayer changes things.’

I leave you with that thought: the living Saviour Jesus, who changes things through prayer.

& Jaggers Spring Lockdown Few people notice the small spring under the wall and hedge of the garden of Greenwell on the flat stretch of Jaggers Lane. It has been there for generations but in March this year it formed the focus for 14 households on Jaggers Lane for their newly formed What’s App group duly named ‘Jaggers Spring’. As the ramifications of the coronavirus dawned on me and with lockdowns looming, my thoughts turned not only to friends and family but to my immediate neighbours.

I started to contact neighbours to ask if they would like to join a What’s app group to keep in touch through what in effect was to be an unprecedented period of time. Within a few days, Caring in Hathersage, was asking for volunteers to help people throughout the village during the looming lockdowns. I became the coordinator for Jaggers 2 which we renamed Jaggers Spring.

What’s Apps, together with letters and phone calls to households without modern phones, started to flow, to keep everyone in touch with what was happening in the village and roundabout with offers of help for those that were self-isolating.

On the afternoon of Thursday 26th March we heard that the youngest in the group would be making ‘a bit of a racket’ at 8 pm that evening as part of the national campaign to say thank you to NHS workers but also to make sure all their school friends in the village could hear them. Jaggers Spring turned out in full support with their drums, symbols, saucepans and clapping hands.

Thursday evenings became a focus for the group. Neighbours began to recognise each other, to put faces with the names seen on What’s App and gradually social chit chats became the norm – at a distance! The amazing weather helped too.

Bunting went up for VE day and we stood together during the 2-minute silence, hearing the guns fired (just) in the centre of the village. Later in the afternoon, we held a street party enjoying tea, cakes, music, and dancing in the street all socially distanced.

A non covid bereavement made us realise how precious life is. Our eldest and next to youngest residents had emergency hospital visits but home quickly afterwards. We all spent more time in our gardens, and many enjoyed the new experience of ‘Zoom’ to see friends and family.

Importantly, Jaggers Spring found the positive side of the national lockdown – friendships were formed, neighbours cared, and we all supported each other with kindness, and we continued to smile! I know this will continue – now and beyond Covid 19 as shown in the accompanying photograph montage.

& It's been a funny year for gardening…part 2 This is a gardening year like no other. Gardens, balconies, window boxes and allotments have become places of escape, retreats, our havens and our saviours.

We have been able to get up close and personal with our plants and wildlife, but not with our friends and loved ones and for some that is still the case.

So those places have become a more integrated part of our changing lives, their welfare and wellbeing intertwined with ours and even more valuable than before the world changing events of this year.

Have the effects and experience of a global pandemic made us see more, feel more and appreciate more of our natural world?

Certainly our natural world has embraced us and shown us that sometimes we have almost taken for granted the wonders of the changing seasons and how we need to nurture nature.

After asking local gardeners and allotment holders their thoughts on gardening through lockdown I have found many of my personal feelings were more eloquently written by others.

At the beginning of lockdown with restrictions on movement, many found their gardens and allotments reassuring places in the midst of an unfolding crisis. The weather has given us extremes and everything around us has felt more acute, especially the onset of spring.

We had time to appreciate the buds of new life opening, beautiful spring blossom and the vivid green of the leaves. Bird song seemed louder and more distinctive.

Wildlife became more adventurous and abundant. One allotment holder described spring this year as “nature exploding all around us”.

Apart from two late frosts, which did affect the acers and the development of tree fruit in particular, the weather has been great for trialing new gardening skills and projects. Ponds and patios may have been the challenge for some, but the simple pleasure of growing from seed has been discovered by gardeners of all ages.

& With the lack of accessibility to commercial suppliers of plants, tools and compost, many of us had to be more inventive and experimental. Many now have discovered that growing from seed and cuttings can be very rewarding, especially with successful outcomes. The joys of gardening have opened up new experiences for all ages.

For many the allotments were a little island of normality, the individual plots an outdoor cocoon.

Seeing the usual faces, smiles and waves from other allotment holders made everything almost feel normal again. One memory from an allotment holder was of a very hot evening when eight fellow allotment holders were waiting to clamber into the stream to get water and they were all two meters apart. A reminder that the world outside was still impacting on that special cocooned environment.

Hathersage became a quieter place for a short time, relatively free from traffic noise and many visitors, reminiscent of past times. Our human crisis showed us how this changed our environment and gave us time to reflect on the impact of wider issues, as well as focusing on our own immediate needs and desires.

Many now feel that with the easing of restrictions leading to increased levels of traffic and activity, gardens and allotments continue to serve as a means of escape and a haven of relative peace and tranquillity.

So on reflection, has this very strange time given us a different outlook on gardening and nature? Hopefully we can all appreciate how lucky we are to be able to experience the joys of listening and watching the busy bees on lavender, seeing seeds you planted develop into little plants, sampling your own produce, hearing new bird song, the scent of different blossom and the smiley face of a majestic sunflower.

Perhaps we can take time to reflect on our own place in the world of nature, holding on to those joys no matter how small as we live in this forever changing and unsettling world.

Facebook Flower Show 1 - 7 September We may not be having a Horticultural Show this year but that does not mean we cannot Show Off Our Horticulture!

From September 1-7th members of Hathersage Horticultural Society will be invited to take and submit photos of their gardens and allotments, hanging baskets and window boxes and not just flowers but plants, fruit and vegetables grown in the village for display on the society’s Facebook page.

A maximum of 5 photos per member please – we don’t want to break the internet - to be sent to lyndenhartmann@icloud.com for posting on the site so we can all enjoy and celebrate the summer and each other’s gardening successes in a different way. Remember the photos need to be taken during the first week in September and submitted straight away so we get an exact showtime snapshot of the season.

Autumn Sing - cancelled It will not surprise you all to hear that our 'Autumn Sing' at the Memorial Hall in Hathersage on Sunday 20th September 2020 will not take place due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Optimistically, we have booked two dates for 2021 these being the 'Spring Sing' on Sunday 18th April 2021 and the 'Autumn Sing' on Sunday 19th September 2021 in the hope that the situation will have improved by then.

& Kiss of Mixed Feelings – a poem collection by Mike Pullman The poems in this, my first, collection arose like a lot of poems one imagines from memories and experiences. For several years, I have been keeping a notebook. I was inspired by reading Samuel Pepys diary among other things but more than a factual day by day record, my notebooks flit all over in place and time. The contents became prompts and signposts to the past as well as noting experiences as they happen. The key difference I guess is that they are reflections not recordings.

A few years back I started the long process of putting the notebooks into a digital form. As I started, I began editing, distilling, thinking about the words and hence the prose evolved in front of me into poetry. However, I keep writing in my Moleskine notebooks in the traditional format. This provides the material for future poems This year I decided to enter several poetry pamphlet competitions, with the aim of at least ‘finishing’ some poems and moving on. This was prompted by two things; I had just retired and the Covid crisis with the imposed lockdown. Kathy Towers, a much-published national poet who also lives in the village provided kind and insightful guidance. And so, A Kiss of Mixed Feelings was published in July 2020 under Tinman Publications. It is composed of two sections.

The ten poems in the Kiss are about Wales, my home, and where I grew up until leaving for London aged 18 to study medicine. Poems such as Big Nanna, Faggots and Peas, and Watching from Bridges are autobiographical poems of the South Wales valleys in the seventies whilst South Bishop lighthouse and Solemn Eucharist are inspired by the spiritual and natural intensity of Pembrokeshire. Big Nanna, although on the surface being a very personal experience, has a universality in its emotion which has been fascinating for me to discover in the feedback from people who have read it. The loss implied in... she lived in two rooms, downstairs only; upstairs was full of the dead, and that kiss that we have all had with elderly relatives that we probably wish we could have again, now we know. The School Bus experience is another that resonates with many. The front cover so brilliantly illustrated by Gordon Evans captures the anxiety of the poem so well and the looming industrial past of the mines.

The Mixed Feelings section is a real mixed bag of love, family, lockdown, alcoholism and the wonderful WRVS A floor cafe in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital that cruelly lost the Tender Process to a glitzy new chain of cafes a few years back. The last poem Thursday Evening is a simple and calm scene that takes place in each of our lives in different guises day by day and yet we are so often distracted away from the moment. It brings the collection back to 22

& ourselves. I have been overwhelmed by the response to the poems. All poems are in the end personal to the reader and some struggle to find meaning whereas, in others, deep emotions and feelings arise about their own lives and the world. Writing these poems has been so affecting for me and yet once read by others they develop their own life and energy, which is part of the excitement in this collection now being released. I am at present writing the second collection and I have a dream to set up an open mic poetry night in Hathersage as the next project.

A Kiss of Mixed Feelings is on sale for £8. The proceeds are going to the Cathedral Archer Project for the Homeless in Sheffield. To date £300 has been donated.

Fundraising Outdoor Concert in Hathersage on 12th and 13th September 2020.

Celebrated violinist/vocalist and a daughter of Hathersage, Lizzie Ball, will perform with the wonderful pianist James Pearson and friends in an outdoor concert in Hathersage at 2:30pm on Saturday 12th September and 2:30pm on Sunday 13th September 2020.

In a 'picnic in the park' style event, the programme is likely to include hits from the Great American Songbook and James's 100 year history of Jazz.

The purpose of the concert is to raise money for good causes in Hathersage and to financially help the performers who have lost their income due to Lockdown restrictions.

The event will be very carefully policed in accordance with all COVID rules including social distancing.

We expect tickets to sell fast.

Please bring BAGS of jumble to The Hathersage Memorial Hall between 8am and 1pm on Saturday October 3rd. Social distancing guidelines will of course be adhered to and bags can be dropped in the car park of the Hall to ensure this.

The Bags will be collected and a payment will be made per kilo which will go into our funds.

Please keep saving your jumble. Although we cannot anticipate when our sales will be back on, we will be back and in the meantime we will get what funds we can from a collection without the sale.

& King George’s Field 100 Club The King George’s Field runs a 100 Club draw each month. This is to raise money to enhance the Hathersage swimming pool complex. The annual subscription is £12 payable on November 1st or pro-rata after that date, £1 for each month.

The usual prize is £25 rising to £100 in the July and October draws. The draw for the past 4 months was made at the recent online meeting of the King George’s committee.

& Hathersage, Bamford and Grindleford have a new vicar!

The Venerable Dr Paul Moore, previously Archdeacon for Mission Development and who holds Permission to Officiate in the Diocese of Winchester, has been appointed Priest-in-Charge of Hathersage with Bamford & Derwent and Grindleford, Diocese of Derby. Dr Moore hopes to take up his new appointment in the autumn.

We are delighted that Paul and his wife Lucy have accepted our invitation to join our benefice as Priest-in Charge, and that at last we are able to share the good news with you.

Paul has a passion for mission and comes to us with a wealth of experience in developing and growing churches through reaching out to families, youth and older people.

Together with Lucy, who started the first Messy Church and now works full time as Team Leader of the international Messy Church movement, they have seen significant growth in the number of children and adults who were previously not connected with any church. The ultimate aim is to nurture and lead people into becoming lifelong followers of Jesus.

Paul and Lucy have two grown-up children, Arthur and Judith, and a small but feisty dog called Minnie.

We look forward to welcoming Paul and Lucy with Minnie, hopefully in November, when they will be moving into the vicarage at Hathersage.

& Hope Cement Works: Alternative raw materials by train Hope Cement Works is holding a public consultation exercise this autumn on a proposal to bring additional alternative raw materials to the site by train.

To make cement the works uses local limestone and shale, along with imported shale replacement material. For the past 10 years, the shale replacement has been a by-product from coal power stations called 'pulverised fuel ash' or PFA. This material allows the works to achieve the best blend of raw ingredients and keep sulphur dioxide emissions low during the cement making process.

PFA is currently brought to Hope by train and the current planning permission allows the site to import up to 250,000 tonnes of it each year. Of course, the UK is moving away from coal for power generation so the availability of new PFA is declining. To maintain the right blend, the works has been trialling alternative raw materials such as historic piles of ‘conditioned’ (or wet) PFA, slate quarry fines, fireclays, marl and other lowsulphur shales.

All of these alternative raw materials have a higher moisture content than PFA (up to 30% water) which is driven off in the production process so the works would need to import a much bigger quantity to maintain its supply of cement to British construction. At the same time, the site team is keen to limit the use of the local shale (which has increasing amounts of sulphur the deeper it is quarried) to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions and achieve the latest emissions targets.

The proposal is therefore to use the existing rail link to bring in the additional material. Rail is much more efficient that road and has a lower impact on people and the environment. To make this work, some new facilities would be needed for unloading rail wagons, conveying the material across the site and storing it indoors until it’s needed.

& This will require planning permission from the Peak District National Park Authority including full environmental assessments plus associated permits and conditions. During September, a team at the works will be starting consultation with people in the surrounding villages, including public exhibitions (both faceto-face subject to suitable control measures and online).

Access will be maintained, whenever reasonably possible, on the affected length of road. The road will re-open as soon as the work is finished. This may be earlier than advertised. Derbyshire County Council apologises for any inconvenience caused while work takes place. Anyone needing further information should ring Call Derbyshire on 01629 533190. The County Council intends to make/has made an Order under Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (as amended) to prohibit its use by traffic.

& George Elliott 100th Birthday George celebrated his 100th birthday on 5th August. Many will remember him from his milk deliveries throughout the village and surrounding area, and he was never short of a story to relay or engage in some jovial banter with any one he encountered en route.

George started his working life at Newburgh Engineering & left for a period during WW2 to join the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm as an aircraft service engineer. Upon his return he met Muriel who was in service at Hathersage Hall where George had met her when he was employed to carry out some electrical work there. They married and took over the running of Toothill Farm in Hathersage where they had two sons, Robert & Clifton.

George remained at Toothill with Muriel until 1998 when they left the village to retire to Collingham near Newark to a bungalow with lots of surrounding fields still but no hills! Muriel died in 2000 and George now spends his time enjoying his spacious garden & popping into the village to see friends - sometimes on his sit-on petrol lawnmower!

George would like to express his thanks for the many cards & good wishes he received on his momentous day which was spent with family at his grandson's home in Retford.

Jenny Bruce Rob and family would like to express our thanks and deep appreciation for all those in the village and about who helped us through this time of the sad passing of Jenny, wife and Mum and Granny. The cards, letters and emails have been amazing - thank you for your kind thoughts. How nice of those of you who stood in the pouring rain to show your respects as Jenny passed by to the church. She loved being with you all during the past 25 years that we have lived here.

& Improving Verges for Wildlife in Hathersage The Rewilding Group has been working towards increasing the diversity of plants in the verges in and around Hathersage to provide the habitats needed to stem the decline in numbers of our pollinating insects. These pollinators are vital as the basis for the whole ecosystem including our own food supplies and it seems only sensible to allow verges to provide the habitats they need.

The Jaggers Lane pilot project we reported on in the July ‘Hathersage News’ has had some ups and downs.

It was decided that this year we would achieve the greatest diversity of flowers by mowing the side closest to the footpath in July to give lower-growing plants a chance to compete with the grass, but leaving the side next to the road until September so that the taller Knapweed etc. can continue to bloom.

However, during June and July, several verges in and around Hathersage were flail mown, including unfortunately part of our pilot project. Since then we have been in discussion with Derbyshire Dales District Council about the need to support and increase biodiversity, and they seem to be committed to finding ways to achieve this within the constraints that they have. For example, they agreed to delay their schedule for mowing the upper part of the Dale when we drew attention to the diversity of wild plants including orchids growing there.

The Council is also reviewing its use of a herbicide which is harmful to humans and wildlife.

The pilot project has been registered with the Buglife B-lines project. Most of the Hope Valley is within one of the bee lines that Buglife is trying to establish to provide havens for pollinators, and routes that they can use to move safely around the country. Hathersage Careline has operated its telephone befriending service in the village and immediate catchment area for over fifteen years and provides a free, friendly phone call each morning to people who live alone and are elderly or vulnerable. Call times can be tailored to Client needs, including those who do not require a call every day. It is operated entirely by trained volunteers and maintained by voluntary donations and local fundraising.

As a result of the article about Careline in the Hathersage News last month, more volunteers have stepped forward and so we have capacity to take on more clients who would like to be phoned on a regular basis.

Come And Meet Each Other (CAMEO) Café Our aim is to enable carers of people who are living with dementia in Hathersage, to bring their loved ones, and enjoy a break, while the Cameo Friends engage with our ‘Voluntary Helpers’ in various activities suitable to each person’s capabilities and needs.

This could be just having a chat and a drink, or a walk down memory lane with photos, or music, or a game of dominoes etc, or perhaps indoor bowls. It will all be centred on the needs of people who attend.

We are very keen to start up again ASAP but we plan to widen the scope of our clients to include anyone lonely and possibly a bit forgetful (aren't we all), who would like to meet up for a cup of tea, a cake, a chat, a game of cards or scrabble etc and some outings.

We meet every other Thursday afternoon from 2.00 till 4.00 in the Methodist Hall.

& HOPE VALLEY VENDORS Our local shops have done a great job of supporting us, now we should support them. An intervillage group has been working setting up shops on an app/website called Shopappy, where you can shop from lots of local shops as though in one shop online, and then collect your shopping or arrange to have it all delivered.

As well as supporting local businesses, the plan is to reduce the number of delivery vans currently charging around the Hope Valley.
