Editor’s letter June 2021 As lockdown eases, it is so lovely to meet people in person and give our families a cautious hug. Hopefully we can start to have big events in the village soon. In the meantime, the Jumblies are having a collection of clothes and materials to raise funds, the Hathersage Players are doing a Midsummer’s Night’s Dream with audiences spread out and there are exciting plans for an arts centre in the old Royal Bank building. And the Derwent Valley Junior Football League are celebrating 50 years and so have sent details of the celebration planned for July, great to see them in the magazine.

The staff in our shops have worked tirelessly during the pandemic to keep us all supplied with food and essentials, and kept us safe. Sadly we are saying goodbye to Sarah McManus from the Spar who was often the only person that people saw during the day and cheered us with that laugh. Have fun in your new life Sarah. Our local businesses need us to support them, so do buy local from the butcher, the baker, the greengrocer etc, we are lucky to have them. We are helping to pay their mortgages and bills, and not contributing to a superyacht..

There is an article from the Hathersage Rewilding Group and Moorland House are joining in with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and their #dontmowgrow challenge in a bid to help restore 30% of wild spaces by 2030.

John Ellicock has kindly given us an update on swifts. We have another great piece from Hilary Bull of the Historical Society and an update on the parking questionnaire from the parish council. As ever, thank you to all who have contributed.

June - Thoughts from Rev Julie Letts Have you ever started out on something and got to a point where you wished you’d never started or can’t see how you are going to reach your goal? Something like maybe a decorating project, landscaping the garden, going on a walk. Malcolm (my husband) and I love walking but there have regularly been moments on a walk when we wondered why were we doing this, why didn’t we choose a beach holiday instead of a walking holiday?! I particularly remember a walk around part of Ullswater in the Lake District. It sounds simple doesn’t it, walking around a lake but in the Lake District it’s not that simple, well not around Ullswater anyway. It involves significant “ups and downs.” At one point, after many ups and downs we could see our destination. The trouble was that we could also see the miles we still had to cover and it was a very deflating moment!

We will all have experienced deflating moments in our lives, and not only since Covid hit.

Some will have been easier to cope with than others. Some of us will be in situations right now where we can’t even see the destination point. I know, from personal knowledge, how tough that is; there have been many times when I just wanted to quit.

As I reflect though, I realise that these deflating times have been times of learning about myself, learning coping mechanisms, learning more about God who I have shouted at very loudly on many an occasion, and more!

Whilst I was training for ministry and even sometimes now, it often makes more sense to me to go back to the life I once lived. There wouldn’t be any complications, I could do what I wanted to do when I wanted to do it. But I have changed and we have all changed because of Covid and life will never be the same again. If it’s even possible to go back to the life we once lived, do we want to do that? Aren’t there great and wonderful possibilities ahead of us for a bright and better future? Action on climate change for instance seems more of a possibility right now. But this alone will take courage, strength, collaboration, commitment.

Right now might feel like a very confusing, complicated, scary time but one of the things I’ve learnt in such times, is not to quit because I realised we all have a purpose, a role in life that is fulfilling, a role that doesn’t always feel sensible but stretches us and calls for courage, strength, collaboration, commitment and “going that extra mile” - a biblical statement.

So, for some of us we need to “keep on keeping on” and go that extra mile. For others, we need to be the encouragers. As Malcolm and I continued our walk around Ullswater that day and reached that point of deflation, he kept encouraging me on. You know the sort of thing – “it’s just round the next corner.” The joy of completing that walk and taking off my boots was wonderful. It doesn’t compare though to the joy of completing a particular part of the journey God has mapped out for us – that purpose for our lives.

Despite the dreadful time that this world is in, I do see hope as many have found new purpose in life, as communities have blossomed even in the midst of despair. So my encouragement to you is: 15

Whatever it is that you’re endeavouring to complete today, keep on keeping on, don’t quit.

And look out for the person who needs a word of encouragement.

Plans For Hathersage Arts Centre Launched Ambitious plans to create a multi-use Arts Centre for the Hope Valley have been launched in Hathersage. A group of local people are forming a not-for-profit social enterprise to raise funds to buy the former RBS bank building in the middle of Hathersage to convert it into a gallery, cinema and performance space.

With the working name of The Hub, the centre will be owned in trust for the community to use and enjoy. Plans for the Hub also include a space for workshops and classes.

Mike Pullman, who is steering the project, says: “We plan to transform the old bank into a stunning and uplifting centre as a lasting legacy for everyone in the village” “We have seen how the community can work together for a common aim, so we are creating a space where we can all enjoy art exhibitions, intimate performances and a showcase for local talent, all in a central and atmospheric venue.”

Fundraising for the Hub has begun and a target of £500,000 to buy and refurbish the venue has been announced. Pledges and donations are now being taken Details can be seen here The HUB Hathersage - Hathersage Arts Centre.

Hathersage Players News Preparations for the Players’ forthcoming production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ are… coming on a dream! After weeks of rehearsing via Zoom, the cast are finally really happy to be rehearsing (socially-distanced of course) outdoors in Val’s (one of our directors) back garden, albeit heavily wrapped up against this April’s freezing evenings and May’s torrential downpours. Such dedication to their craft!

The actual production will be going ahead in hopefully much warmer circumstances, firstly in the Memorial Hall from Tuesday 22nd to Thursday 24th June, and then, due to popular demand, for THREE outdoor performances at Hathersage Hall – one in the afternoon of Saturday 26th June and then one in the afternoon and one in the evening of Sunday 27th June. With COVID restrictions being what they are these days, the audiences at both locations will have to be spread out and therefore greatly reduced in numbers. So this is your warning – don’t delay booking your seats, as they are bound to be snapped up quickly. The tickets will be going on sale from Friday 21st May, either from our website www.hathersageplayers.org or by phone on 01433 764064.

Hathersage Methodist Church update on services We haven’t gone away! Services inside the church building are currently taking place on a monthly basis. We are restricted to 30 people, so if you’d like to attend, contact Christine Hose on christine.hose@btinternet.com. As with all indoor public places, masks are required and social distancing will be in place. We also have online worship, shared with the wider Peak Methodist Circuit, in services at 6pm on a Sunday evening, using Zoom, to which we’ve all become accustomed! Everyone is welcome. Derwent Valley Junior Football League 50 year anniversary Celebration of Football The DVJFL was started in the early 70’s to provide local football for children within our community. We would like to invite all those who have been involved over the years to a celebration of the achievement of the league to be held at Calver Football Ground on 4th July, 9am – 4pm. Come along and share the fun of watching the current teams play in tournaments and cup finals, meet old teammates and adversaries from around the valley and visit the games and stalls. Improving spaces for nature in Hathersage The Hathersage Rewilding Group* is continuing to improve spaces for wildlife in Hathersage, particularly trying to create more environments to support pollinators such as bees, hoverflies and moths.

Our first project was the verge on Jaggers Lane where we raked some areas in the Autumn and sowed some small patches of seed of locally occurring wild flowers. Yellow Rattle has emerged in a few small patches and over time this will open up the grass to allow other plants to grow naturally. We have also planted a few plugs of local cowslips and yarrow, picked up the rotten edge boarding of the border adjacent to the wall and reused it to create a bug and bee hotel, pruned some of the shrubs at the lower end of the border and planted some comfrey, lavender and marjoram in the border which should all tolerate the hot dry conditions there and provide flowers for pollinators. These all seem to be doing well although there are no signs of bees in the hotel yet. The main change for the verge is the change in mowing regime so that it is only mown once a year in late Autumn. This will allow wildflowers to grow, flower and set seed so that over time the range and number of flowers will naturally increase. This will not create a dramatic floral display quickly or even in the future, the verge should evolve slowly to gradually provide a much better habitat for pollinators with a range of wildflowers throughout the year. In the meantime we face some difficult management decisions and have had long debates over the plentiful supply of dandelions – these provide an excellent supply of nectar and pollen for insects but they may need some control to prevent them becoming too dominant.

We have also worked on the verge on the main road opposite the junction with School Lane. Here we have raked out some of the longer grass and sown some seed of locally occurring wildflowers and planted some cowslips and yarrow. The verge will not change suddenly but as with the Jaggers Lane verge we hope that over time it will evolve into a beautiful wild verge and provide a great habitat to support the pollinators that so badly need our support as well as a beautiful welcome to the village that reflects our rural location.

In April we conducted a plant survey of the Northern verge of the main road between Hathersage and Glenbrook and we found 90 different species of wildflower which shows how diverse a verge can become when left to its own devices. We will survey again several times through the year to add plants that emerge later in the season.

All of the work that we do in public spaces is conducted in consultation with the Parish Council.

HATHERSAGE SWIFTS – GRACING OUR SUMMER SKIES AGAIN! Hathersage Swifts have returned to breed. They left us in early August for the warmer skies over southern Africa. They have been on the wing every moment since they left us, ‘touching down’ only on their return to their nest sites here.

The Hathersage Swift Group and Peak Boxes (see: https://peakboxes.co.uk/ ) - sponsored a webinar talk in March by the world authority on Swifts, Edward Mayer. It was hosted by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, and over 600 people registered, a record for DWT’s webinars. Edward is an excellent, and very entertaining, speaker – you can watch it on Youtube, search for Edward Mayer swifts.

As in 2018 and 2019 there will be a national Swift Awareness Week in 2021 and the Hathersage Swift Group will be organising an activity depending on the state of our Covid restrictions. The dates are 3 to 10 July – further information in due course. Sadly, such has been the decline in Swift numbers worldwide that they are likely to be ‘red-listed’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) later this year.

By June, the sight and sound of Swifts will again be gracing our summer skies over the village. Do contact me or Lester Hartmann if you wish to help conserve Swifts by putting up nesting boxes - made here in Hathersage by Lester.

REOPENING OF HATHERSAGE MEMORIAL HALL POST COVID As you will all be aware it has not been possible for our facility to be open for its usual wide range of activities over the last year. Stage 3 (May 17th) and Stage 4 (June 21st) of the Government’s Roadmap to Recovery are approaching and it is time to start planning for a return to the new normality.

During this challenging time we have been supported financially by Derbyshire Dales Council and by detailed information and training by ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England). We are grateful to both these organisations for this. You will also be pleased to hear that the Hall has been running as a national vaccination centre since early March (provided by our local pharmacy company) as and when supplies of vaccine permitted.

The latest detailed information about the issues surrounding a reopening plan have been published by ACRE and are available to download at: https://acre.org.uk/news/2021-03-29-new-information-to-help-village-halls-reopen We appreciate that some of you will have been desperate to resume your activities in our Community complex and others, for a variety of reasons, will no longer wish to do so even when the regulations permit.

Hathersage is a very active village community so many of you will probably be aware of the challenges and responsibilities involved in running our facility as a charitable institution.

The commitment of the Trustees and user representatives on the Management Committee has been wonderful and we can be truly proud of our facility.

However, we are looking for new members to take on some of the tasks involved in adapting to the future needs of our community. I would be delighted to speak to anyone (without commitment) who might be interested in helping us keep the Hall complex at the heart of Hathersage life.

Farewell from Sarah to the Peoples of Hathersage!!

I want to say a big thank you for all your kind words and the cards and gifts I've received upon my leaving the shop, and the village. I have been very touched, and at some points very tearful because your generosity and kindness has been overwhelming.

I've worked here for 3 and a half years now, learnt alot of your weird and wonderful ways - and let's be honest some of you are REALLY WEIRD!! HAHAHAHA! But seriously, I have truly loved getting to know you, and have made some friends for life.

I'm off for a wonderful new life in Devon, but can I ask something of you all - please continue to support Jack and the team in the shop, it's been a tough year and they've all worked incredibly hard for you all. Even the grumpy ones......

1930s Hathersage from the Historical Society’s Archive The Hathersage Historical Society’s Archive consists of over 600 items connected to the history of the village of Hathersage. These are mainly articles, newspaper cuttings, books programmes, photographs and audio recordings which have been collected and/or donated to the Society over many years.

These two photos show the Hathersage Pageant in 1930. The school children’s May Pole dancing is taking place in front of ‘Ivy Dene’, Back Lane, where the Bowling Green is now situated.

The Hathersage Pageant parades along the village main street passing the old Post Office, now the Grey Goose building. What was the Pageant’s theme that year? Note the horses taking part in the proceedings.

Christmas 1930 saw the first issue of the ‘School Times’ which was a magazine compiled by the children of Hathersage School. Sadly, we hold only a few pages but the ‘Contents’ page gives you a taste of what was included in the magazine.

We hold the page that includes the School Hymn, the School Prayer and the School Badge Poem.

Hathersage Football Club were the first winners of the George Lawrence Championship Cup, which was awarded to them having beaten Birchover 43 at Stoney Middleton on 24th April 1937.

A few of the players were named on the back of the photo and include Charlie Langley, Charlie Parkin, Norman Siddall (Captain) and Dennis Pearce.

Blythe House and Helen’s Trust Community Fundraiser Blythe House and Helen’s Trust are seeking a community fundraiser to cover the Derbyshire Dales and North East Derbyshire – this role would suit a proactive and outgoing individual who is looking for a new challenge with an opportunity to make a difference to local people in the Dales and Chesterfield areas. The successful candidate will be warm and friendly with outstanding communications skills, both written and verbal, and be used to working in a fast-paced environment with many conflicting priorities. Experience of working with volunteers would be an advantage. Please note that the role will be based in the Derbyshire Dales serving the communities of the Derbyshire Dales and North East Derbyshire; knowledge of this area is essential. Volunteers opportunities to support High Peak and Dales hospice charity shops People across the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales who are looking to give something back to their community and support a local charity, are invited to find out more about rewarding opportunities to volunteer in hospice shops. Blythe House Hospicecare and Helen’s Trust are recruiting volunteers to support their shops in Bakewell, Buxton, Chapel-en-le-Frith, New Mills and Whaley Bridge.

The retail outlets are responsible for bringing in over a quarter of the money needed every year to provide free palliative and end of life care to local patients. On some days, the shops are not able to open or have to close early due to a limited number of volunteers. Volunteers at the shops help with a range of tasks including sorting donations, displaying items for sale, pricing stock, managing tills and money, and supporting customers.

Victoria Wild, Community Volunteer programme manager at the hospice, commented: ‘Without our volunteers, Blythe House and Helen’s Trust simply could not function. Our team of over 250 volunteers collectively donate approximately 590 hours of their time to us each week. They play an integral and vital role, and their support means that we can spend the maximum amount of money directly on care for our patients and their families. We are so grateful for the time and commitment they give.’

Parish Council - Key Messages from the Parking Survey There was a 45% response rate to the 907 blue survey questionnaires delivered and analysis of these responses suggests that:

Parking in general •

Over 90% of residents believe that visitors cause parking problems and should pay to park in Hathersage and see parking on road verges and pavements as a problem.

•

80% of residents agree that Hathersage needs visitors but find it difficult to park outside their homes and believe that more parking spaces are needed within and / or close to the village.

•

70% of residents expressed interest in residents parking permits but only 32% if these must be paid for and even less if there were given no guarantee as to where their space would be.

Electric Vehicles •

81% of residents support the provision of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging facilities for residents and visitors.

•

8% of residents already have an Electric or Hybrid Car and 25% plan to acquire one within the next two years.

•

60% of residents have space at home to charge at least one Electric or Hybrid Car.

Public Transport •

26% of residents place some reliance on buses and 18% on trains (these low levels will in part reflect the Covid restrictions).

Cycling •

28% of residents cycle regularly and a third of these have electric bicycles.

Summary of actions for Hathersage Parish Council Following on from the Parking Survey of residents, Hathersage Parish Council will engage with: •

Derbyshire Dales District Council regarding increasing the capacity of Oddfellows car park and installing EV charging points.

•

Derbyshire County Council regarding options for introducing parking charges for visitors; a potential residents parking scheme and additional parking capacity.

•

Peak District National Park where necessary in respect of additional parking capacity.

Hathersage Parish Council will also continue to seek additional parking capacity capable of implementation within our own authority. The Parish Council will continue to consult with residents and keep them updated on progress.

Sheila Hill née Dalton 4 October 1940 – 21 March 2021 The death has occurred in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada of Sheila Hill.

Sheila was born at Birley Farm, Hathersage. Daughter of the late Cyril Dalton and his first wife, Ada. Sheila was educated at Hathersage School and later at New Mills Grammar School.

In June 1961 she was married in Hathersage Church to Eric Hill of Shirecliffe, Sheffield.

They made their first home at Hangingwater Road in Sheffield.

In 1973 Sheila and Eric emigrated to Vancouver, Canada after spending a holiday there the previous year, staying with friends who were former work colleagues. In 1993 they moved to Penticton.

Sheila is survived by her husband Eric, sister Sandra and stepmother Jean. They would like to express their thanks for kind messages of sympathy and shared memories.

Sheila will be greatly missed by her family and friends in the U.K. and Canada.

I thought people might like to see the dedication to Jake Birkinshaw’s memory that Becci Hainsworth has had put on the bench outside the Heritage Barbers in the village, with the family’s permission.

Jake died just before Christmas and our hearts go out to his parents Beccy and Ian and family.
