Editor’s letter August 2021 I write this on so-called “Freedom Day” when we are no longer legally obliged to wear face masks or socially distance, however village businesses have been affected by having to close due to a covid alert, so many of them would prefer you to wear a face mask while there. Stay safe.

This month’s magazine has news of the Horticultural show, the wonderful school collage and events happening on the Bank holiday weekend, including Music in the Meadows which was such a success last year. We have updates from the Girl Guides, Careline and the welcome for our new curate Charlotte.

There were some great scarecrows for Gala on the theme of Heroes, this one is on Jaggers Lane.

Following the publication of the bus timetable recently, someone suggested the same for the railways, so a timetable for Hathersage – Sheffield is included this month.

We all need to care about climate change and protecting our environment. The news of terrible flooding in Germany and wildfires in Siberia bring home the damage that has been caused already. We can all do our part in reducing our impact and so let’s try to reduce, reuse and recycle our stuff as much as possible.

Any thoughts on having a water fountain in the village for refilling water bottles? There are now models with no contact, you press the bottle down to activate it, it would reduce the many single use plastic water bottles that are thrown away everyday and litter our national park. And look out for the Young Christian Climate Network who are walking the length of Britain in relay to finish at COP26, the international climate conference in Glasgow in November, to highlight climate justice. They will be passing through the Hope Valley early September if all goes according to plan.

Happy Holidays!

I hope you all have opportunity for some rest and recuperation over the summer, even if there are limited possibilities for holidaying abroad this year.

We human beings need holidays to remain healthy sane and humane. After six days of creating the world and all its creatures, God needed a complete rest from work on the seventh day, and it seems he created us a bit like him in this respect. We need time to work, rest and play, although I doubt this balanced lifestyle is aided by eating a Mars Bar a day, as the old unhealthy advertisements used to say.

We soon suffer in body and soul, if we work all hours and do away with rest periods. In 1929 the Soviet Union experimented with nepreryvka, or the ‘continuous working week. ’ Everyone was forced to work shifts with days of rest staggered across the five day week, but after 11 years of trial and error, this regime it was abolished in 1940, and a seven day week was restored.

‘Holiday’ is such a lovely word. To me it suggests thoughts and feelings of freedom, having time to stand and stare, to potter, explore, laugh with friends and family and make lasting memories that keep on cheering us for years to come.

‘Annual Leave’ on the other hand, isn’t remotely poetic. It feels like time off grudgingly given to unwilling conscripts in an army, it’s over all-too-soon, and then you’re back to the grindstone. ‘Vacation’, sounds too grand, as if you’re embarking on some huge project to tango barefoot all the way to the South Pole dressed as an emu. ‘Getting away from it all’ sounds unrealistically ambitious. We’re bound to be disappointed when we discover we can’t get away from ourselves, and that quite a lot of ‘it all’ inevitably travels with us.

The popularity of the word ‘Staycation’ annoys me greatly, because it’s so frequently misused to describe taking a holiday somewhere in your own country. There’s even a socalled ‘staycation cruise’ around the British Isles! A true staycation is surely staying put in your own home. This is exactly what we intend to do this summer, since we are so fortunate now to be living and working in the Hope Valley, the sort of place where we would formerly have rented a holiday cottage for our summer break. With no packing, no stressful journey, a comfy bed, all mod cons, and no extra accommodation costs, it should be a great holiday, provided we can ensure one thing – do no work!

May your holidays, whether you go away or stay put, truly be holy days. ‘Holy’ simply means set aside for a special purpose, whether that’s time for worship and prayer, rest and recreation, or family and friends. Happy Holidays to you all!

PTFA Whole School Collaborative Collage Project Parents, teachers, friends and children of Hathersage St. Michael’s CE (A) Primary School have worked hard to ensure this socially distanced, collaborative collage project came to fruition.

A professional designer outlined a picture of our school in it’s beautiful setting. This was enlarged and made into a grid. The grid was cut up into numbered sections which matched a pre-coloured replica. Every child in the school was given a numbered square which they needed to locate on the grid and colour accordingly. The grid was then carefully pieced together until the full picture emerged.

This ingenious idea has been a very successful collaborative project as we are currently spending so much time working in separate bubbles and holding PTFA meetings remotely.

The effect is a bright, colourful, unique collage picture, showcasing every child as an individual who is a member of our whole school family.

Look out for this amazing collage on merchandise to help raise funds to benefit the children in school.

Music in the Meadows 2021 After the hugely successful, sell-out ‘Music in the Meadows’ last September, we are delighted to present more brilliant, live, open-air music in Hathersage over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

As last year, we will be treated over the weekend to Lizzie Ball (Hathersage-born, internationally renowned violinist and vocalist) and James Pearson (pianist, composer and creative tour de force) in his amazing Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club trio (with Sam Burgess on bass and James Turner on drums). The format will again be something of a ‘Glyndebourne experience’ so bring a picnic and munch in the meadow off Baulk Lane from 1pm with live music from 2:30pm onwards.

Hathersage Guides are back!

8 days before the first lockdown in March 2020 we were away on a residential weekend. We were super lucky to have booked that weekend as it turned out to be the last time we would be able to meet until April 2021. We kept in touch with fortnightly Guides@Home activity packs full of activities, craft, games, wellbeing, challenges and self-care resources. We actually gained Guides through the lockdowns.

Now we are back and have had a brilliant few months!! We were so eager and ready to go that we started back just 2 days after the Government said we could and met through school holidays!

We’ve had a jam-packed term of Go Karting, Bouldering, Coracle boat building and sailing (some sinking!), orienteering and adventure courses. Cracking codes combined with map reading led to an Easter treasure hunt and well earnt lucky dip prize. We’ve also had a Cook-Out on wood fires, Trangiers and gas stoves, Taskmaster challenges and an evening full of rather wet water activities!

We’ve learned how to use the ‘What3Words’ app which divides the entire world into 3m squares- each of which has a unique 3 word code. This can be used to locate exact locations for emergencies and as directions. Many emergency services are now using this technology and it has literally saved lives.

A record 13 Guides made their promise recently and commissioners visited to present my 20yr service brooch. Mixology, Photography and Backwoods Cooking badges were presented to several Guides.

Hathersage Guides is really thriving with a large unit and super leadership team. If your daughter is interested in joining us or finding out more, please get in touch. You can join any age 10-14 and don’t have to have been a Brownie. You can also be a Guide and a Scout at the same time.

A big Thank You to the Methodist Church and Emma Clare Dance for working together with us to make sure both Guides and Dance could restart promptly and safely.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Review – June 2021 It’s easy to become a bit jaded with A Midsummer Night’s Dream – many of us have seen it more than once; many of us in school, whether reluctantly or enthusiastically, studied it or were in it! However, the recent production by the Hathersage Players had a freshness and verve that brought it fizzing and sparkling to life. A play of turns and transformations, it lends itself to further twists and new takes, which this version certainly delivered.

Clearly a lot of thought had gone into the vision for this production, which was wellrealised throughout, not least in the clever gender switch at the heart of the show (for those who weren’t lucky enough to see it – in this version it is Oberon, not Titania, who is magicked into falling in love with Bottom). What a refreshing twist – very much in keeping with the play’s anarchic, subversive spirit – and matched by other topical updates which truly made this a production for 2021.

The performances were fantastic across the board. The four lovers really brought the text alive with clever physical comedy in all their scenes. The rather spooky fairies imbued the play with a dark energy that transported us into another world. The Mechanicals were hilarious – you could see the whole audience grinning with anticipation whenever they entered the stage. Egeus was truly nasty and you could not have wished for a more regal Titania or a more ridiculous Oberon. Puck commanded the stage with a strikingly physical performance.

All credit to the cast, directors and production crew for making the play flow so seamlessly – all the more impressive considering they were rehearsing in small groups outdoors right up until the last minute. The costumes were a particular highlight of this production – original, high quality, and brilliantly aligned to the vision for the production.

Titania’s first entrance was quite breathtaking and the crew pulled off a quite impossible costume change for the returning Theseus and Hippolyta at the end.

All in all it was a delight to be able to see live theatre once again, in our own village, in the lovely setting of Hathersage Hall, and with interval drinks to boot! A huge thank you to the team who put it all together in a Covid-safe way.

King George’s Field 100 Club The King George’s Field runs a 100 Club draw each month. This is to raise money to enhance the swimming pool. The annual subscription is £12 payable on November 1st or pro-rata after that date, £1 for each month. The monthly draw is made at the on-line meeting of the King George’s committee and the usual prize is £25 rising to £100 in the July and October draws.

Hathersage Careline Can Help!

The COVID pandemic has affected Hathersage residents in widely different ways.

More people than ever before feel lonely, isolated and reluctant to go out, even if they are physically capable of doing so. Hathersage Careline has managed to sustain its telephone Befriending Service throughout this difficult time and continues to offer a free, friendly telephone call to its Clients every morning, or less often if they prefer.

As lockdown restrictions ease, some people in the village, particularly those who live alone may not be aware of what is on offer from our fully trained team of Volunteers and might welcome a short telephone call between 9 and 10.30 am. This can also benefit their loved ones who might have concerns about their welfare.

We now have the capacity to take on one or two new Clients, and stand ready to help.

So If you have a friend, neighbour or relative who might be eligible for our service, please give us a call on one of the contact numbers below, in complete confidence, and we will be happy to discuss the situation with you before deciding how to take matters forward if it is appropriate.

Careline is entirely independent and funded only by local events and donations. We have been operating in Hathersage for over sixteen years and we look forward to hearing from you.

MHA Moorland House Rowan Tree Moorland House, our residential care home in the village, were given a rowan tree by Longshaw Estate as part of their Peak District appeal.

It was planted in March as a tribute to those lost during the Covid pandemic and a plaque was erected on 19th July 2021 as” a reminder of the strength, resilience and courage shown by all our staff and residents.”

The (Horticultural) Show Will Go On! They kept you fit, they kept you fed, they kept you sane, and now is the time to show your appreciation! Let’s hear it for gardening, cookery and crafts! In fact we don’t just want to hear it – we want to see your gratitude and the perfect place for that is Hathersage Horticultural Society’s Annual Show.

Yes the Show will go on so make sure you have Saturday September 4th in your diary and clear the calendar for as much time as you need before hand to prepare. In fact photographers can start now with the announcement that this year’s theme is Water – plenty of that about!

Much of the format will be reassuringly familiar to many when we open the doors of Hathersage Memorial Hall with the usual range of classes but there will of course be some changes this year. Exhibitors will be encouraged to stage their displays on Friday evening when there will be less of a rush and a crush. There will be a one way system in force and sadly there will be no trophy presentation, no refreshments and no raffle.

No withstanding these Covid constraints we hope that you will take this opportunity to celebrate and support a very important aspect of our village life by entering classes or just coming to see the fruits of other people’s labours. Don’t hide your light under a bushel! (I don’t think there is a class for bushels – perhaps there should be).

Prayer Walking Hathersage If you notice a couple of strangers on your road during the month of August, who look as though they could be talking to themselves, do not worry they will be local Christians praying for Hathersage. Following the success of Arise Sheffield, a prayer walking event which saw all the streets and roads of Sheffield walked during the month of March, Hathersage Parish Church has decided to walk the streets and roads of Hathersage during the month of August.

What is prayer walking? It’s talking to God whilst walking; praying with your eyes open.

If you would like to be involved in praying for your road, or a selection of streets in Hathersage, and can do this during the month of August, please contact Tony Hill via email tony@tht.co.uk for further information. Following the event there will be a celebration service where those involved will be able to share stories of their time prayer walking the streets of Hathersage. Tribute To Judy And Bob Dawson The world of theatre is well-stocked with brilliant partnerships; Gilbert & Sullivan, Rodgers & Hammerstein, even Rosencrantz & Guildenstern (although their second production didn’t go so well!). To those names, with a smile, we would like to add our very own Bob and Judy Dawson.

Bob performed in our first ever production in May 1979, followed soon after by Judy in our first ever pantomime in January 1980. So began a relationship between them and the Players that will leave us forever in their debt.

Bob performed in plays and pantomimes resulting in almost incredible figures. He was a Cast member in sixtythree productions (including the titular role in 1991’s Wizard of Oz) as well as writing/cowriting fourteen pantomimes and producing/directing in nine.

Judy, preferring to stick to pantomiming, similarly returned impressive figures. She was a Cast member in thirty-six productions (including the titular role in 1983’s Dick Whittington) as well as directing the music/producing in twenty-nine pantomimes.

In addition, they both supported the Players in so many other ways which are too many to mention here. Both have been awarded Players Honorary Life Memberships.

Therefore, it was totally fitting that our 25th Anniversary Panto in 2004 had them both writing and directing as well as ever. It was also totally fitting that their last performance together was as King and Queen Goose in 2012 (pictured).

Sadly, all good things must come to an end. In November 2018, we lost Bob after his long fight with ill health. At the beginning of this month, Judy left the village to be closer to her family in Gosforth.

Words cannot express how much we will miss them and how grateful we are for everything they have done.

Josie Potts and George Avill wedding 21st May 2021 The lovely Josie, who many will know as hairdresser to the village, and George got married at St Michael and All Angels on 21st May 2021. The ceremony was taken by the Ven Paul Moore, vicar of the church. Josie and George are childhood sweethearts, having met at school.

The weather was wet, but it was a very happy occasion, George’s cousin Ed joined the livestreaming of the ceremony, and we wish them both much happiness in their life together.

Tony Marshall Eulogy from Hathersage Players On 3rd June 2021, Tony Marshall died after a brave and long fight against illness, leaving Christine (his wife) and family. The Players would like to pay tribute to a wonderful and talented man who was always willing to help with artistic suggestions and general support. Preferring Back Stage over On Stage, Tony’s real talent lay in photography; indeed, he was an internationally-renowned and published photographer. The Players were therefore very lucky that Tony was the official production photographer for eleven of the productions between 2013 and 2019. It was only fitting that his last production with us was ‘Brush with a Body’ in May 2019 when the Players celebrated its fortieth birthday and the much-loved Christine brought the house down with her wonderful comedic performance as Mrs D’Arcy, the Housekeeper with the big nose! Needless to say, Tony managed to find her ‘best side’! We shall miss his positivity and kindness.

NB The magazine editor was very grateful to Tony for supplying several articles and lots of lovely pictures of his work during lockdown. I’m glad we were able to publish them.

Christine hopes to have an open day in the village to remember Tony, with an exhibition of his art and books, so watch out for that.
