Editor’s Letter Welcome to the October edition of the Hathersage News, Thank you to everyone who has contributed and if anyone has anything they wish to appear in the magazine, do send words (in a Word document if possible) and photos or other pictures by email to hathersagenews@gmail.com Life in the village proceeds in different ways. September is usually the Horticultural Show month with everyone working hard on their produce. This year, there was a virtual show on Facebook and our cover is the entry from Bob Musgrave with his produce - I’m sure Bob would have won many prizes.

As lockdown has eased, the village has become very busy with visitors which is lovely but can feel like a shock at times, with challenges around parking and noise. The parish council have done a potted history of the progress of the Heart of Hathersage development, and other updates. The parish church building is reopening for services, with booking system and no singing – we have enjoyed meeting on Zoom and will miss our Methodists friends and others on Sundays.

Things may change again. And we thought the church clock had been fixed, but no, it has stopped chiming again. Smith’s of Derby tell us the motors need replaced so there is an appeal for donations towards the costs.

The Jumblies are collecting material on 3 October in the Memorial Hall car park – they support so many community projects and good causes, we are grateful for their hard work every year.

We have a thank you letter from Jeannie the postie, a lovely article about brass rubbings from Wendy Crossland, and details of the sunflower challenge at the primary school. Hope you enjoy it, and send feedback to the above email.

The magazine is distributed every month by a wonderful network of volunteers, thank you for your hard work, and a big thank you to Martin Grundy who has sorted out the distribution for many years.

It is also for sale in all good shops in the village, get in touch if you cannot find it for sale. Thank you to the shops for taking it on and to David Fisher for organising them.

Hathersage Horticultural Society Virtual Show The lack of the Annual Hathersage Horticultural Show this year didn’t mean we couldn’t Show Off Our Horticulture!

Wendy Ellicock's basket of delights From September 1-7th members of Hathersage Horticultural Society took and submitted photos of their gardens and allotments, hanging baskets and window boxes and any flowers, plants, fruit and vegetables grown in the village for display in a Virtual Horticultural Show on the society’s Facebook page.

There were also handicraft and domestic exhibits and in total 50 posts made over the 7 days gained thousands of views by hundreds of on lookers. They were even viewed as far away as New Zealand!

Members were invited to submit up to 5 photos each and the society was thrilled by the response with photos ranging from window boxes to full on show displays.

The Virtual Show will be available indefinitely by visiting the Hathersage Horticultural Society Facebook page. You do not need to sign up to Facebook to view it.

Welcomed back to school!

The governors of Hathersage Saint Michael’s CE (A) Primary School invited all the children in our school to take part in a ‘Sunflower Challenge’ during lockdown.

Seeds were distributed by bicycle and foot to all the primary school children of this village and by post to those who travel from other villages and Sheffield.

Many children and adults had fun planting, nurturing, and watching them grow AND GROW! Some of the results were illustrated alongside the ‘Welcome back to school’ poster displayed on 3 September as encouragement on the important day.

As promised to those who contributed, prizes will be distributed shortly.

As its motto, the Challenge took these words from Genesis in the Bible: ‘Grow all different types of plants from seeds … and God saw it was good’ From the school governors

Hathersage Memorial Hall Treasurer Following the retirement of our excellent Treasurer, there is an opportunity for an enthusiastic volunteer, preferably with an accountancy background, to join our Charitable Board of Trustees who manage the Memorial Hall.

A potted history of the covered seating (aka bus shelter) and planters Main Road, Hathersage.

In response to a request from the Heart 4 Hathersage community group and residents the following is some information about the trials and tribulations experienced by Hathersage Parish Council (HPC) in trying to reinstate a covered waiting area for bus passengers and planters to discourage parking.

An estimate was received (12/02/2018) from Derbyshire County Council (DCC) to the value of £15,117.94 for them to provide a kerb side platform to current requirements on which a bus shelter could be situated. The cost of the actual shelter would be £4,100 in addition, to which DCC would contribute 50%. The colour of the bus shelter would have had to be revised to meet PDNPA requirements at an additional £400.

The quote from DCC was challenged by the Parish Council as some of the work specified seemed in excess of what was required.

A local licenced contractor was met on site to determine costs of building the platform and installing the shelter. The cost of this would be comparable to the DCC quote but a security bond of £14,300 would need to be paid by the Parish Council to DCC plus a non-refundable inspection fee of £2,281.25, plus the cost of the actual shelter.

In July 2018, as a way of cutting the cost the Parish Clerk identified some stone curbs in a quarry and a meeting was arranged with Sheffield City Council (Amey) and the Peak District National Park (PDNPA) to source these stones to meet PDNPA requirements in appearance and to enable the required height by DCC. An agreement was reached.

In Autumn 2018 it was found that a parish council can provide covered seating on parish council owned land within permitted development. This avenue was explored, as hopefully a cheaper option, with the proposal to build covered seating by the gable end of Grey Goose and facing the direction from which buses would arrive. Drawings and estimates for such a structure were requested.

Drawings of the shelter were made available in January 2019.

It was subsequently decided that the covered seating should be free standing. Revised drawings were requested.

Estimates for the work were requested from local trades people. The estimates were provided to HPC late August, early September 2019. The cost of the now bespoke covered seating would cost less than £10,000 in total.

In September 2019 the project management of the covered seating and planters was passed to Hathersage Parish Council for an already very busy Clerk to deal with.

On 8th and 9th October 2019, the Parish Clerk contacted the trades people and started the ball rolling with a site meeting to review the plans, construction and location of the covered seating. Plans with dimensions were requested and these were provided 01/11/2019.

Towards the end of 2019 and early 2020 attempts to get the stone for the integral bench delivered to Hathersage failed in such that the stonemason had to fetch the stone himself from the quarry.

On 23rd March 2020 Corona Virus Lockdown commenced and all businesses shut down under HMG instructions.

Towards the end of May 2020 contact was attempted with both trades people but they had not yet restarted work. Further attempts at contact had been made during the following weeks by the Clerk and Assistant Clerk and council members.

In August 2020 the Parish Council were informed that the timber part of the covered seating was now complete and awaiting the integral stone.

On 8th September one planter made from wood in a similar style to other wooden features at the Heart of Hathersage was delivered to site. This had to be delivered empty, not planted, due to the weight and the need to decide it’s exact location. The reasons for the planter were two-fold – to provide shade from a small tree and to discourage both residents and visitors parking on the new paving. One planter was ordered to start with to ensure the idea worked and the appearance was in keeping with the area.

The planter will be positioned and planted up in the very near future. A licence has been obtained from DCC for an Object in the Highway.

On 10th September the Parish Council was informed that the covered seating had been temporarily assembled and ready for measurements to be taken for the glazing elements and rainwater guttering and downpipe.

As of 11th September the covered seating is expected to be in place within weeks but this depends on availability of trades people and the final materials required.

• The noticeboards on the side of the Grey Goose have been removed while work is going on and will be reinstated when done.

Bradwell Co op & Bakewell & Eyam Community Transport I have been talking to Bradwell co op & Bakewell & Eyam community transport since before lockdown about running a shopping service from around the valley up to the co op each week.

I am pleased to announce that as from 16th September this service will begin.

At first ( because of COVID-19 ) it will be running on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. If this arrangement is a success it will hopefully be increased.

Pick ups will start at 11am. There will be a 3 hour slot for you to book onto. Once booked a route can be arranged & you will be notified.

There will be a maximum of 8 passengers at a time & face coverings must be worn. Hand sanitizer will be available on the bus & at the co op.

Please register as a B&ECT passenger by ringing 01629641920. The fare will be £5 but we have had a very generous donation from 2 ladies in Bradwell which will mean some free journeys will be available.

A welcome addition to the family Last year the “Hathersage Jumblies” were kind enough to provide funding for the Parish Church Yard mowing team, to purchase a much needed new mower, this to enable us to continue to keep the church yard looking good for our visitors and the village.

The difficult conditions for Mowing in the church yard mean that a heavy toll is taken on our mowing equipment, the normal life span of a machine being about six to seven years. However our resident expert Mower Mechanic, Les Millard manages to extend this by replacing key parts and cannibalising defunct mowers.

There is, though, a time when even this is not feasible.

We reached that stage last year, with three mowers all expiring about the same time. This is where the “Jumblies” came up trumps by funding a new mower. The mowing team normally consists of seven volunteers from the village, but sadly last year we lost Sean Jennings, one of our most dedicated members.

With the advent of Covid19 this year we have had to stagger the numbers mowing at one time, which has meant that for most of the year we have managed with less equipment. Happily we are now nearly back to full strength and have just purchased the new mower to enable us to keep everybody in the team busy. Next year Mick Turton, who has been waiting in the wings, has volunteered to join us, so we will then be back to seven again, and needing all equipment up and running.

Our sincere thanks go to the “Jumblies” for their generous gift which will enable us to do this.

Who are the “JUMBLIES”?

The “Jumblies” were established as an organisation in 2013. We came together as a group of keen Jumblers, having attended, donated or run sales for many years in Hathersage for different groups.

We are a committee of nine, with a huge support team of over forty people, young and old, who give their time freely to each event.

We run four sales a year, filling the three halls at Hathersage Memorial Hall to overflowing with jumble donated by our very loyal and generous residents in the area. The days are busy sorting, selling and clearing up, welcoming a few hundred people at each event.

We pride ourselves on the level of recycling. The volume of donated goods is massive and once it has been picked over by our customers we start the next phase of our recycling. All paper, glass, metal and plastics are sorted and recycled, books go to the book bank and the soft materials and shoes are collected and sent off to third world countries.

Funds raised are donated each financial year to local causes and organisations in Hathersage, benefitting the elderly, the young, school, sports clubs and many other local individual cases.

Although our sales have this year been put on hold, we look forward to the future, hoping we can resume normal sales. In the meantime we are simply collecting selected jumble (soft materials and shoes) which will clear our sheds, prevent landfill waste and raise some funds.

Any soft materials can be brought to The Hathersage Memorial Hall car park between 8 am and 1 pm on Saturday, 3rd October. Social distancing will be in place and bags can just be dropped off.

As Chair of the “Jumblies”, my thirtieth year of running sales, nothing has changed. What is someone’s jumble is another person’s treasure and who doesn’t like a rummage!

Fundraising Outdoor Concert in Hathersage on 12th and 13th September 2020.

Celebrated violinist/vocalist and a daughter of Hathersage, Lizzie Ball, performed with the wonderful pianist James Pearson and friends in an outdoor concert in Hathersage at 2:30pm on Saturday 12th September and 2:30pm on Sunday 13th September 2020.

The weather was wonderful, social distancing was carefully policed and a grand time was had by all. There was a great range of music types and improvisations, and money was raised to support local causes, including musicians who are struggling without income because of Covid, and the church clock.

King George’s Field 100 Club The King George’s Field runs a 100 Club draw each month. This is to raise money to enhance the swimming pool. The annual subscription is £12 payable on November 1st or pro-rata after that date, £1 for each month. The monthly draw is made at the on-line meeting of the King George’s committee and the usual prize is £25 rising to £100 in the July and October draws. The winner in the August draw was Ann Jones.

The winner in the March draw (missed out at the time because the committee did not meet that month) was Debbie Edyvean.

The Farmers Country Showdown at Longshaw.

A camera crew from the BBC recently asked if they could take some photos of the church and film Little John's grave to use in an episode of The Farmers’ Country Showdown which airs on BBC2 at 6.30pm. In each episode they follow two 'farm to fork' farmers or producers as they prepare for, and then go to a farmers market, country show, or country event - they were filming at the Longshaw sheepdog trials for this episode. (Our own Mrs Sarah Shuttleworth of Hathersage is the president of the sheepdog trials this year, pictured here presenting prizes.)

When the crew of three left an hour and a half later, they had footage of the interior and exterior of the church, a brief history on the links to Charlotte Bronte of which they were previously unaware and a Peter Miles guidebook. They were impressed with the beauty of our church and said it far surpassed their expectations. They expect the programme to air sometime after Christmas and will let us know when.

St Michael and All Angel’s Parish Church is opening again!

We have been having Zoom services with our Methodist friends and Grindleford and Bamford. We are now planning to hold our services again in our lovely church. However this is going to be very different from when we last met there six months ago, with many do’s and don’ts!

Our first service will be held on Sunday 27 September, 10.30am which is our Patronal Day. This will be a service of Holy Communion although only the bread will be offered.

The good news is that we shall have Gilbert Brown officiating at the organ, however we will not be able to sing. Instead we will have the opportunity to reflect on the words of the hymns as Gilbert plays and as a soloist sings.

Hand sanitiser will be available as you enter the church and we respectfully ask that you wait to be shown to your seat whilst keeping two metres apart. Face coverings are also a mandatory requirement.

Due to the social distancing requirements we are introducing a 'booking system', as we will have to limit the numbers attending in line with the Government guidelines. We have looked at various ways of making it fair and available to all, so we shall be offering this on a weekly basis either by email to hathersageparishchurch@gmail.com or by telephone on 07721 047568. Please leave a message if necessary. You will receive a confirmation, and should there be over-subscription on available places, we will try to ensure that you have priority for your next booking request.

Sunday services will be held throughout October at 10.30am and booking will be available from 12.00 the previous Sunday and any time during that week until 6pm on the Saturday.

Paul Moore and his wife Lucy at the beginning of November, and we will be making sure that they receive the warm Hathersage welcome which we know everyone will be eager to provide.

Elizabeth de Oxspring I have a confession to make - in 2010 my sister and I kidnapped Elizabeth from Hathersage church and took her home to Oxspring. We also took her husband Ralph. They are now happily ensconced in the entrance hall of St Aidan’s in Oxspring where they welcome everyone who enters the church. Oxspring is a small village near Penistone twenty miles north of Hathersage. A wide expanse of moorland separates the two. St Aiden’s is a relatively modern church being built in the 1960’s alongside a development of council bungalows for the elderly.

One day after a visit to Hathersage and reading the leaflet ‘The Eyre Brasses’ my sister Julia had the idea of taking brass rubbings of Elizabeth and Ralph which could then be displayed in St Aidan’s to give the church a sense of history. The vicar of St Aidan’s, Rev. Mathew Joy, Barnsley Chronicle Friday September 2, 2011 bought frames for the rubbings.

St Aidan’s is more than a church doubling up as a village hall and community centre. Today everyone who enters the building, from the five year old Rainbow to the ninety year old Pop In Club member, are greeted with the sight of Elizabeth and Ralph.

The ruins of Oxspring manor are situated opposite St Aiden’s on the north bank of the river Don and it is possible that Elizabeth lived there as a child. We feel that we have brought Elizabeth’s spirit back to Oxspring and that she is no longer forgotten.

In 2014 I moved to Hathersage but often drive over the Strines moor to visit my family. I sometimes imagine Elizabeth and her companions leaving Oxspring on horseback and riding over the moors to a new life in the Hope Valley. I wonder which route they took!

Early bird discount for new garden waste scheme Early bird discounts are available now for Derbyshire Dales residents subscribing to a new garden waste collection scheme.

It costs a discounted £35 for Dales households that subscribe for the 2021/22 year to the garden waste service now – the equivalent of less than 68p a week.

The new scheme, starting on 1 April next year, generates funds to offset the increased cost of the District Council's new waste and recycling contract, which began last month.

Derbyshire Dales joins more than half of all UK councils now charging residents for garden waste collections. The councils that make a charge include 39 of the 50 authorities most similar to Derbyshire Dales District Council.

In the coming weeks all local households will receive a leaflet delivered by contractor Serco, inviting them to take advantage of the discounted price online at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/gardenwaste There’s also a hotline number for residents without internet access.

The discount offer closes at the end of January 2021, when the subscription price rises to £50.

In recent weeks the District Council has been explaining the reason for the introduction of the opt-in subscription scheme, pointing to frequently asked questions online at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/gardenwasteFAQs The cost of the council’s new waste and recycling contract has risen by £1-million a year after Dales residents made it clear they wanted the District Council to maintain current service levels, which are the best in Derbyshire.

It means fortnightly collections of dry recycling and residual household waste have continued with the new contract, together with weekly food waste collections.

Free garden waste collections will continue for all 34,000 households across the Dales until April next year.

Unfortunately we will be unable to hold our annual box opening coffee morning this year. In recent years the coffee morning has had a Christmas fair theme which has included fantastic home-made crafts and lovely home-made cakes and other delights.

Throughout the Pandemic the Children’s Society has had to adapt to continue to work with vulnerable children and young people. Many young people have not been able to attend school for a number of months and sometimes this has made their lives more challenging.

Fund raising has been seriously affected so we would like to encourage people to give paper money or cheques made payable to The Children’s Society and post or take to Heather Rodgers, 2 Mayfield Terrace, Hathersage, S32 1BE. Ideally Heather would like to receive your money or cheques by 31st October. If you would like an idea of how much you would normally give, please contact Heather on 01433 650884 and she will be able to tell you. Please give generously as we won’t have our wonderful craft and cakes for sale this year to boost our total!

Please keep your Children’s Society boxes until next year when hopefully the worry about passing on Covid 19 will have passed.

Hathersage Parish Council Update • Parish Council meetings are still being held on-line using Zoom. Meetings are still open to the public and should you wish to join a meeting with either video and audio or just audio the details of each call can be found on the agenda for the meeting or by contacting the Clerk at the details below. The Parish Council’s noticeboard on the Parish Rooms, Heart of Hathersage, is not currently being used but all agenda are available from the website.

• At September’s Council meeting members of the public attended to discuss the possible overuse of the weed killer glyphosate by the County and District council. There was also representation to inform the Parish Council of the possible use of the Royal Bank of Scotland building as community space • With the financial support of the County Council and assistance of the District Councillor temporary pavement widening has taken place in some areas of the village to enable pedestrians to pass safely withing the current Covid-19 guidelines. These measures are under review and may be added to or changed.

• You will no doubt be aware of the increase of motor bikes in the area both by their noise and somewhat inconsiderate parking in the village. The purchase of the crowd barriers (as mentioned in July) at the Heart of Hathersage, while not easy on the eye, were seen as an expedient way of deterring both car and motor bike parking. The barriers are inexpensive items to buy and it was thought would be useful in the future where crowd safety needs to be ensured.

• The parking of cars on the pavements has been raised with the police and several tickets have been issued by them for causing an obstruction. There are other areas in the village where inconsiderate parking is being seen restricting the movement of residents’ cars and the refuse collection truck.

These have been raised with the police by the Parish Council and residents.

• Please ensure your hedges are trimmed to allow pedestrians’ safe passage to minimise the need to step into the road.

• All Parish Council meetings are public meetings to which members of the public are welcome. The full council meeting is generally the first Tuesday of the month with committee meetings arranged as required but all meetings are posted on the diary of the Parish Council’s website.

Visit from Robin Hood – a generous gift The church recently received a very generous donation of money towards the upkeep of LittleJohn’s grave and the churchyard from Mr Ronald Loghan of Eccles, Manchester. Ronnie is ex Guards soldier and a life long fan of Robin Hood, who has inspired him to help the British Army and a number of communities. Ronnie visited the grave dressed in his Robin Hood outfit, and brought his sword which he has had engraved for the British Army, a bow, a statue of Robin Hood and a picture of the late Diana Princess of Wales and her two sons in whose memory he was donating money to the churchyard.

We get a great many visitors to Littlejohn’s grave – small children who were passing were fascinated

by Mr Loghan’s outfit, and especially the sword.

We would like to have an interpretive board to explain more of the story of the grave and the bone that was found so the donation may be used for that. Also a contactless donation point to add to the parking meter which only takes cash.

There is also a wall which needs repairing but this is rather more prosaic. We are very grateful to Ronnie for his contribution to the churchyard maintenance. The churchyard always looks beautifully kept thanks to the team, mentioned elsewhere in the magazine.

Now is the time!

You may have noticed that the regular striking of the hour on our Parish Church clock has not been functioning reliably in recent months. After nearly 60 years the time has come to recognise that the two motors that drive the bell chimes are now in need of renewal. The motor that operates the hours reached the end of its life and the quarter striker is proving unreliable. To renew both chiming motors will cost £3600.

As the clock may be regarded as a village asset, not restricted to members of the church congregation, it is hoped that support will come from the wider community as this is a large amount for the church itself to afford.

In 2013 the whole village community most generously managed to raise more than the required £2000 to install a motor that operates the clock itself rather than the bell chimes. The £2425 donated in excess was reserved for any future need such as this. We are now asking if you could please help by contributing towards the shortfall of £1200.
