ood evening and welcome everyone to tonight’s game against Bradford city. It gave us a great lift to post our first point on the board and get our season going on Saturday. Yes we wanted more but considering the circumstances we will settle for the point against a good Orient team, especially after we were forced once again to make two subs in the first half! That’s 8 forced subs so far we have had to make out of 4 games played. Everyone is talking about our injury list and it is a fact that it’s a big hit to lose Scott Cuthbert, Terence Vancooten, Ben Nugent, Paul Digby, Dean Parrett, Emanuel Sonupe, Joel Byrom and Ben Kennedy. That’s arguably 8 of our starting eleven that aren’t available to us... it’s inevitable to have a knock-on effect on the result and any squad in League 2. But we are looking for the opportunity that presents itself to some of our younger players, we already saw 19-year-old Jamie Fielding, 17-year-old Luis Fernandez, 19 year old Kelland Watts all making their EFL debut as well as 18-year-old Arthur Iontton being a first team regular. Everyone one of those lads gave their all to take their opportunity but we know that they still have some learning to do. It’s another challenge for us tonight to come up against one of the big clubs in our league, but we know that will only inspire us to produce our best, there’s no big and small on the pitch, it’s about showing that desire, work rate and attitude to do whatever it takes to win. I remember one of our best Tuesday night performances at home came in September 2011 when we destroyed the ‘big’ Sheffield Wednesday 5-1. How good Stevenage FC v Bradford City

would it be for this group of players to produce another performance like that? Despite the poor results so far, your support been at a different level this season home and away... let’s make it a night to remember.

warm welcome to the directors, officials, players and supporters of Bradford City. I hope you enjoy your stay with us and have a safe journey home. Our performance at Orient on Saturday can best be described as ‘battling’. Dino’s game plan went out of the window when TVC limped off and when Scott joined him shortly after, we’d lost our two centre halves. However a quickly reshuffled 442 formation saw Luis Fernandez and Kell Watts playing alongside each other as centre halves for the first time, with only 36 years between them. But what a performance from these young lads – they showed everything we’re about in terms of spirit and the rest of the side followed, putting in a shift and leaving nothing out there. I can’t say it was a performance of quality because it wasn’t. Nor was it a performance of crosses and goal-scoring opportunities. But there was a lot of spirit to admire and we deserved a point. The problem now is that we’re another 2 senior players down – however one man’s misfortune is another’s opportunity and so it proved on Saturday. Now on to this evening. Our opponents tonight sit in 7th position and will obviously be looking to get back to League One at the earliest attempt. In turn, we need to start putting wins in the bank so that we can start climbing the table. We still have over 10 days of transfer window left and would expect to be busy as we go into the last week. There are players out there that we believe can improve us, but it’s choosing the right ones that will buy into what we’re about that’s the part we can’t rush. No doubt we’ll be Stevenage FC v Bradford City

announcing some additions in the next week or so though. Each time you come to a game you can hopefully see some progress on the North Stand and the entrances to the stadium. Having almost completed the NW and NE entrances, we’ve now started on the East terrace and have removed one of the old turnstile blocks so that we can replace it with a new automated double entry turnstile, which should be ready for the next home game. It’s worth noting that our intention is to create a small outdoor East Terrace bar with the other turnstile, so that our East Terrace fans can buy a drink at half time. As long as we get the necessary consent from the Safety Group that control our stadium, we should have this in place just in time for the cold weather. The stand itself is moving on – we’re getting close to finishing the upper level toilets and tea bar and as soon as we get the disabled sections in, we can start to think about limited use in September. Back to the game, it’s a crucial 3 points tonight. Let’s hear your noise and enjoy the match! www.stevenagefc.com | 7

ur archive programme goes down as one of the biggest games in the club’s history and also one of the most disappointing. Having made the breakthrough into the Conference (and romped to an opening day win at Stafford) a crowd of 1,674 made the expectant trip to Broadhall Way, only to see this home debut go badly wrong. Despite fielding such legends as Barry Hayles, Martin Gittings, Dave Venables and Mark Smith, Boro fell adrift early on and never recovered, starting a run which saw them lose four and draw three in the next seven.

ON THIS DAY Tuesday August 20, 2002 Farnborough 0 Boro 1 We head back to 2002 for our game on this day, another Tuesday evening clash, this time in the Conference as Boro went to Cherrywood Road and Wayne Turner’s men continued their unbeaten start to the campaign thanks to a Scott Houghton winner. Alas it was to be a season of tumult and after thumping Woking 5-1 in late September, Boro went on a shocking run which saw them deep in a relegation battle, cost Turner his job and eventually brought in Graham Westley for his first stint. August: Do Boro get off

the blocks or are they always on the beach?

A

ugust is a month of beginnings when it comes to football. The season gets underway and everyone hopes for a strong start to the campaign, get off on the backfoot in August and things just seem to get a little tougher - get off to a flyer and there’s sure to be a great season ahead. While it feels like it’s been a tough start for Boro so far with two defeats and a draw from the first three games, we thought we would look back at how August has panned out for Stevenage in the past few seasons - turns out it isn’t such a month of sunshine and success after all. 16 | www.stevenagefc.com

Back in 2014 Boro began the Division Two season under Graham Westley following relegation the previous campaign. Hopes were high of a swift return to the higher level but despite a 1-0 win at home to Hartlepool on the opening day, Boro slipped to two defeats and a draw before they grabbed a win on the road at Wimbledon in their final game of the month.

W2 D1 L2 With the departure of Westley and the introduction of Teddy Sheringham, there was a great deal of interest at the start of the season in August 2105. Things didn’t go well with a 2-0 home Stevenage FC v Bradford City

defeat to Notts County on the opening day followed by a draw at Newport and a defeat at Orient. Although Boro grabbed their first win with a 2-0 success at home to Hartlepool, they then drew with Dagenham, earning just one win, two draws and two defeats in the month.

With Sheringham a distant memory, Darren Sarll started 2016-17 as the boss and it was to prove a disappointing month. A lacklustre opening day defeat at home to Crewe was followed by a 1-1 draw at Notts County. Boro then crashed 3-0 at Orient and although they snatched a 2-1 win at home to Luton, they were hammered 5-2 at Grimsby at the end of the month to end with one win, one draw and 3 defeats.

W1 D1 L3

The 2017-18 campaign began with a much more impressive August from Boro. Two draws, a 3-3 thriller at home to Newport and a 1-1 draw at Colchester were followed by a 3-1 success at home to Grimsby and a 1-0 win at Barnet for a month with two wins, two draws and no defeats.

W2 D2 L0 Last season was also another solid August as Boro followed an opening day 2-2 draw at home to Tranmere with wins over Crawley and Morecambe. They maintained their unbeaten run with a hard fought 0-0 draw at Forest Green but ended the month with a 2-0 loss at Yeovil. Two wins, two draws and one defeat.

Academy

little more than 18 months ago on Thursday 11th January 2018 Stevenage FC U18 played Category 1 Academy Middlesbrough U18 in the FA Youth Cup. It was a disappointing night as we lost 2-1. However, scratch beneath the surface, and you can see the progress that is a profiting the first team and long term reputation of the Shephalbury based Academy. Ben Wilmot had made his debut in the FA Cup just 5 days earlier contributing to an amazing 0-0 draw against Reading. His omission from the youth team squad was decided in an Academy Technical Board meeting as he was set to be included in the upcoming League Two fixture against Morecambe. The reason I mention these dates and the significance to today’s match day programme is because featuring in the back four that night along with Theo Sackey-Mensah (a first year scholar) Charley O’Keefe and Ali Omar (both second year scholars at the time) was a young Luis Fernandez. The latest Academy debutant who at the time was making his youth cup debut as an U16. The staff at the Academy are no strangers to exposing young players to pressure environments. Losing Ben to play for the senior side allowed the opportunity for younger players to sample a faster and more intense game. Luis flourished on the night, and we know that we went some way to recreating the environment he may have experienced last Tuesday night against Southend and then again when Stevenage FC v Bradford City

contributing to a great clean sheet against Orient at Brisbane Road on Saturday. The loss of Luis from the U18 side creates that same opportunity for another player. On Saturday, it was a 14-year-old named Sam who played at the heart of the youth team back line. Measured and composed throughout it allowed us a peek into this young player’s mindset. The U18s lost 2-1 on Saturday and it may be no surprise that the solitary goal came from the young man I have just mentioned. Conceding two goals from penalties and missing a penalty kick of our own meant that along with the hatful of chances created, including Jack Smith hitting the bar late on and having a ball cleared off the line in the final seconds, it was Cambridge United who won. Meanwhile following a 5-5 draw v Gillingham, the U16’s entertained yet again, losing to Cambridge 4-5 in a thrilling encounter with another two goals being scored by Fin Johnson to make it 5 in 2 for the young forward. Our schoolboy programme is soon going to restart with players and coaches now inducted and ready for the season. As our games programme commences in September, we will keep you posted. Back to tonight’s game, good luck to Dino his staff and all the players searching for a well-earned three points. Enjoy the game

WOMEN A word from the Gaffer… The first game of the season and it wasn’t the result we wanted. We started the game well, scoring through captain Amy Makewell but in the last 10 minutes of the first half Actonians stepped it up, hitting the woodwork twice. At halftime we came in 1-0 up, a decent half but there was still room for improvement. In the second half we seemed to be second best to most things, they got back in it through a poor goal to concede on our part. This gave them a huge lift and it put us off our stride. Conceding in stoppage time to lose all three points really hurt, you could see in the dressing room after that the players really get it. We know we can play a lot better but need to start showing it on the pitch. On the whole I don’t think we did

enough to get all three points but I am not sure we deserved to lose in the way that we did. A tough one to take, but as always we go again. We have a huge test at the weekend against Yeovil in the cup, so we can’t dwell on this performance - we get back to working hard and continue to do the things we know we do well.

SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS WELCOME Good evening and welcome to our old friends from Bradford to The Lamex. It’s been a while since The Bantams graced our turf here in Stevenage and I’d like to offer a personal welcome to Adam Baker who is chair of the club’s Supporters’ Board. As the formal conduit between the club and its fans, the Board’s tag line is: “Your City, Your Club, Your Voice”. Bradford City hosted our very first away game in the Football League. I recall the outstanding hospitality at Valley Parade that day and would hope to reciprocate this evening. Welcome all, it’s great to see you here.

Two tickets are drawn at half time by the match referee. The 2nd prize ticket holder receives £25 in cash and the 1st prize ticket holder wins all the remaining prize money. Last season, this averaged around £310. Listen out for the winning numbers which are announced over the public address system at half time.

WELCOME

fitness coach Ben Rome

Sam Hornby and GK coach John Vaughan

A new-look Bradford City side will be preparing to descend on the Lamex Stadium this evening, with Gary Bowyer having been a busy man throughout the summer transfer window thus far. At the time of writing, the Bantams have recruited 10 new players and signed a further two on contract extensions, with Bowyer also going some way to reshape his backroom team. First signs of movement within the camp at the Utilita Energy Stadium came less than two weeks after the conclusion of the 2018/19 season, on May 16. City completed the capture of towering centre-back Ben Richards-Everton. The former Accrington Stanley defender penned a two-year deal in West Yorkshire. 28 | www.stevenagefc.com

From there, the Bantams continued adding to their defensive ranks, securing the services of Tyler French, Adam Henley, Jackson Longridge and Paudie O’Connor, as well as goalkeeper Sam Hornby. Experienced pair Clayton Donaldson and James Vaughan then put pen to paper on one and three-year-deals respectively to build City’s strike force. Former Premier League forward Vaughan was later announced by Bowyer as club captain for the 2019/20 campaign. The claret and amber outfit have strengthened in midfield, too, with Walsall winger Zeli Ismail arriving midway through the month of June. The Bantams then made their most recent signing a week into pre-season with the season-long loan of Matt Palmer from Rotherham United at the beginning of July.

In addition to ten new faces in BD8, midfielders Jermaine Anderson and Danny Devine also secure their foreseeable futures at the club, with the pair both signing one-year contract extensions. Fitness coach Ben Rome and goalkeeper coach John Vaughan were also brought in by Bowyer as he reshuffled his coaching staff, in a major transformation at City ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.Â

STORY SO FAR Despite just one league win this season, Bradford have an unbeaten record in Division Two and have conceded just once. Following an opening day goalless draw at home to Cambridge, The Bantams earned another point with a 1-1 draw at Grimsby, James Vaughan netting their first of the season, putting them ahead on 53 minutes

before the Mariners levelled on 66 minutes. Bradford enjoyed league success on Saturday when they romped to a 3-0 win at home to Oldham, Vaughan and Clayton Donaldson putting them ahead at the break before Sean Scannell netted the third. Championship Preston did hand out a Carabao Cup lesson however when two goals either side of the break saw them beat Bradford 4-0 at the Utilita Energy Stadium.
