message FROM THE BOARD

Welcome to Cappielow for today’s cinch Championship match against Queens Park, our final home game of the 2022/23 league season. Thank you for reading our digital programme for today’s game.

As communicated last week, this programme is a trial of a new digital programme and we will be keen to hear feedback from supporters. Thank you to everyone who let us know their thoughts about last week’s version, it was great to see a positive response. We would like to extend a welcome to players, staff, management, and supporters from today’s visitors.

Queens Park arrive at Cappielow today sitting second in the table, just one point behind leaders Dundee.

It was great last week to pick up a valuable three points against Raith Rovers which kept us in the mix for a playoff spot. The aim is the same again today, pick up three points and take it to the final day of the season where we will face a trip to Cove.

At today’s match we welcome the pupils, parents and staff from Kings Oak Primary School in Greenock. There are 160 pupils, 145 parents and 24 school staff present thanks to the support of Dalrada who initially suggested the idea of inviting the

school along and have supported through the provision of tickets.

Through the work of Dalrada and MCT, the kids have been presented with a goody bag when they entered the stadium where the items within have been donated by Buchanan’s and Tesco Store Greenock. Everyone would like to offer a huge thanks to Crawford Rae and his staff at Buchanan’s and the staff at Tesco Store in Greenock for getting on board.

We hope that everyone enjoys their day, and we send them home happy with another three points.

Off the pitch, it was great to welcome many of you to our fan event on Thursday evening. A huge thank you to everyone who came down to The Chartroom.

This week we also announced the top two MatchWinner kits which will soon be on sale. We can’t wait to see these retro kits brought back to life.

Away from Cappielow, there’s also “An Evening with Morton” at Port Glasgow Town Hall on Saturday 6th May to look forward to where we will have 300 in attendance celebrating all things Morton. We said it last week, but we need to say it again - thank you, as always, for your incredible backing across the season, we hope you enjoy today’s game!

FROM THE ARCHIVE

MORTON v QUEEN’S PARK

Queen’s Park failed to extend their lead at the top of the Scottish Championship table, falling to a thrilling five-goal defeat at Morton.

Grant Savoury gave Queen’s the lead before a quick-fire double from George Oakley had Dougie Imrie’s side ahead. Jack Baird netted a crucial third for the hosts to ensure Connor Shields’ first goal for the Spiders would have no impact on the result.

Queen’s stay four points clear of Ayr United, having played a game more.

Morton shift up into fourth.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Morton in the Community girls and women are flourishing at present with a fantastic group taking part. We have reached record levels with 113 girls under the age of 16 and a first team competing in the SWF championship operating with a squad of 20. After promotion last season, this season has been a challenge for first team. We have a relatively young squad with an average age at 22, the players are showing lots of potential and gained a lot of experience for going into next season. So far this season has seen debuts for seven pathway graduates who are still able to play at under 16s.

Today (Saturday 29th April) our under 16s squad face the long journey north to face Ross County in the last 32 of the Scottish Cup on and we wish them well in this tie!

Girls Pathway Co-Ordinator and First team head coach Colin McEachnie said “ These are exciting times for the club as we continue to grow, with many more plans still to be implemented as we continue to look at increasing the participation of girls in Inverclyde and nuture them into a successful women’s first team”

OPPOSITION

QUEEN’S PARK

CLUB MATTERS

Queen’s Park come to Cappielow deep in the hunt for an automatic promotion place in second spot, but also in the midst of a poor run of form.

Indeed with just four points from a possible 15, their last five games sees them seventh of 10 in the current form table, well adrift of Morton who now have eight points from 15. A late winner at home to Hamilton two weeks ago has masked a poor run which has seen the Spiders lose three in a row, conceding

seven and failing to score in that run. Away form also seems to have deserted our visitors as their last win on the road came more than two months ago with a 4-1 thumping of, you guessed it, strugglers

Hamilton

With a home clash against title rivals Dundee FC to end the season next week, Queen’s Park know that only a win will do today.

THE BOSSOWEN COYLE

Owen Coyle is a vastly experienced manager who has wide experience in the game from both a playing and managerial perspective.

Having started with Dumbarton in 1985, Coyle enjoyed an almost exclusively Scottish playing career which took in almost 700 games. His only spell across the border was with Bolton. After starting full time as boss at St Johnstone, Coyle went on to manage a number of clubs including Burnley, Wigan and Bolton, before moving to the States to Houston Dynamo. After a spell at Jamshedpur in the Indian Super League he was announced as the new boss of Queen’s Park in March 2022 and took up the role in June of that year.

WATCH OUT FORGRANT SAVOURY

Grant Savoury progressed through the youth academies of Celtic, but didn’t make his Scottish Premiership debut. In January 2020, he was out on loan to Edinburgh City, but due to COVID, the season was restricted with Grant returning to Parkhead after playing just 6 games. In October of last year, Savoury signed a contract for two years at Peterhead FC. He played 28 official matches, in which he scored 6 times and provided 5 assists. He appeared in three matches against Queen’s Park FC. Grant signed for Queen’s Park, on a two year contract, in June 2022.

CLUB TOGETHER

It was great to see the reaction to last week’s digital programme launch for the Raith Rovers match. We felt it was a hugely important medium in that two-way communication with fans, so hopefully today’s version continues along that path in the lead up to a full launch next season for fans to continue to enjoy.

Thanks to Dalrada, Brian Bonar and the work of the MCT Team, the Queen’s Park match sees the club welcome pupils, parents and staff from Kings Oak Primary School in Greenock.

They’ve been provided with tickets for the match, along with a goody bag which has been kindly donated by Buchanan’s and Greenock’s Tesco Store.

We’re continuing to iron out the future strategy for Morton Club Together, but one key area we know we will be focusing on is our junior fans. We want to make Cappielow a secure and welcoming place for our young fans, who will be the lifeblood of the club in the future. One of the reasons why community ownership is so important in the first place is so that we all have a club to continue to support and love. We know there’s some challenges around this, but we’re determined to work alongside the club and Morton in the Community to ensure we’ve got as many youngsters engaging with Morton, whatever that looks like.

We keep talking about that two-way communication with fans, so it was great to see that in action this week, with the fan event at Inverkip Hub. David McCluskey was representing MCT at the event and had a great evening chatting to members and fans alongside representatives from the club. We’ll be continuing to encourage and work alongside the club to host much more of these types of events going forward. Talking of David McCluskey, one of MCT’s key aims going forward is to level

up our ways of working. We’d previously communicated to members about our upcoming database management system we’re in the process of moving to, but another project we’re starting alongside that is to completely overhaul the roles and responsibilities within MCT. That has begun with David McCluskey being voted by the board to become the chairperson of MCT. He is now responsible for leading the overall MCT strategy and driving us forward to achieve our aims.

MCT members also recently voted on whether they agreed with the MCT board’s choice of proposing Sam Robinson to be a candidate to join the football club board. We were delighted to see 96% of members who voted agreeing with us. We see having a crossover between the MCT and football club board as absolutely vital, and we’d like to congratulate Sam on being accepted onto the football club board.

We hope everyone attending the Queen’s Park match enjoys it and cheers the team on to another three points.
