INTERACTIVE DIGITAL PROGRAMME

v IPSWICH TOWN SAT OCTOBER 16 2021 Kick-Off: 3.00pm

Fan noticeboard WELCOME After the two longest weeks, we are finally back and what a game we have to look forward to today. It has been 28 years since our last competitive match against Ipswich and we have a sold out Abbey Stadium to mark the occasion. Although last Saturday’s postponement was far from ideal, and means a Tuesday night trip to Morecambe coming up, I know that Mark and his team will have spent the extra available time wisely in-order to come up with a winning game plan this afternoon. Be loud, be proud and here’s to a positive result come 5pm. United in Endeavour.

Over the next 29 days, we are likely to play nine fixtures in all competitions. Having not played for 13 days, this will take some getting used to. There is no doubt it is different to last season’s relentless schedule, but it is one we are adapting to. No doubt I will moan about the number of games soon as we are never happy! Too few games, whinge. Loads of games, moan. But we love it really. The gap in games has given us a chance to mix training and rest, including a number of double days off since we last played, to give the players and staff a chance to feel refreshed ahead of a hectic month. We are in fairly good health and have had some good training sessions during this period. But there are many ways to work a schedule. In the end, all that matters is that when the games come around, each indivudal takes personal responsibility to be ready. That means being fit and having done their work. Being focused and rehearsed. Being motivated and excited to deliver the best of which they are capable. Our rise to a new league will be very apparent

today, as it will be again on Tuesday. Sell out crowds don’t happen often at the Abbey but they are to be enjoyed and relished. I hope it is an enjoyable game to watch and a positive day for us. We want more of these days and will have to keep earning them. It is an exciting time and in a month’s time we will be a third of the way through the season. Another good review marker. To now, we are satisfied with our start. We know we can compete and we know we have some quality. We know we have to be on it and ready for games, and we know we can improve. We also know that the next few months will throw many different challenges our way but that is the game. How we rise to the challenge and cope with the consequences matters most. Let’s hear a supportive and packed Abbey today to celebrate the occasion and spur the players on to deliver the best they can. We always give our best and can’t wait for the challenges ahead, spurred on by your support, motivated by our confidence and ambition, and wise from our experiences so far. Let’s enjoy the ride together. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Ian Mather CEO

Welcome to Ipswich Town and the well over 2,000 Tractor Boys (and Girls) that have made the trip along the A14. It is nearly 30 years since the sides have played a league game and the Abbey will be as full as it was for the FA cup game against Manchester United in 2015. Whatever happens on the pitch, this will be a memorable encounter. Our last home game was against Gillingham and was one that is less likely to live long in the memory. It was a disappointing result on a grim evening where at times emotions spilled over on and off the pitch. I get that football is an emotional experience. We are not in a library and if it was it would be dull. It is part of the fun to sing and chant. Banter, especially delivered with wit, ads to the occasion. We can all smile at the “4-0 and its all your fault” singing to the opposition goal keeper. Even “you don’t know what you’re doing” has its place but there are times when banter turns bad. Bad banter, better known as abuse, is not pleasant or funny. It makes people uncomfortable and unhappy. It chips away at the fun we are all here for. We had some bad banter at the Gillingham game, along with throwing of objects onto the pitch and abuse

of the match officials. It doesn’t happen often here and when it does it is a small minority that “lose it”. You may have seen that we have supported the #HerGameToo campaign. One of their many good aims is to create a presence in football grounds and sports bars that means there is a more welcoming environment for young girls and women. Foul language and verbal abuse do the opposite of building a welcoming environment. If you are one of those who, occasionally loses it, please dig deep and try to find some better way of venting your frustration. On a cheerier note - a date for your diary - our women’s team will be playing a league match for the first time in ages at the Abbey when they take on QPR on Sunday 14 November. The team are doing well this season and if you have not seen them play yet do come to watch. Season tickets are valid for all women’s fixtures. Back to today and our history with Ipswich is fairly even. In all competitions the U’s have won two, lost two and drawn once. I offer no predictions of the score or the result but I do expect to see both sides giving 100%. Enjoy the game and the good banter. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

U’s partner with Her Game Too

Cambridge United is proud to become official partners of Her Game Too, a campaign which aims to create an inclusive environment in football for female fans, whilst raising awareness about the abuse women who follow football regularly face... Her Game Too was formed in May 2021 by a group of female football supporters who shared their personal experiences of receiving sexist abuse whilst following the game that they love. Cambridge United unequivocally supports the campaigns aim to create a world where women and girls of all ages can feel confident and safe sharing their opinion about football, both online and in real life without fear of sexist abuse. CEO Ian Mather said, “Women should feel safe and welcome at football games, whether watching or playing. Sexist abuse or behaviour does not fit with the values of this club and we are very pleased to support the Her Game Too.” Cambridge Fans United Trust Board Member Emma Smith said, “It means a great deal that our club has taken a stance against sexist abuse

and become official partners of Her Game Too. “It sends a positive message of support for the club’s female fans and reinforces the message that misogynistic behaviour in football is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. “After speaking with the Amber Belles about the Her Game Too campaign when it was launched, it is clear that a lot of female fans have experienced sexism at matches, both verbal and physical. I think most fans would agree this needs to be stopped.” Co-founder of Her Game Too, Caz May said, "We are delighted to confirm a partnership with Cambridge United and to have another League One club on board. “After speaking to Emma from the Supporters' Trust and hearing about The Amber Belles, we feel our values match perfectly with the values of the club. “We are super excited to work with Cambridge United going forwards to create a safer space for their female fans and to encourage more women to attend matches at the Abbey Stadium." As part of the partnership, Cambridge United will support the campaign by hosting a dedicated #HerGameToo Matchday, displaying #HerGameToo posters around the Abbey Stadium and by offering its full support to the cause. U’s fan can call or text 07522 473291 on Matchdays to discreetly report discrimination at the Abbey Stadium. Today’s visitors IPSWICH TOWN Paul Cook’s men make the 104-mile round trip across East Anglia this weekend looking to make it two wins from two following their 2-1 win over Shrewsbury Town last weekend. Despite a slow start, which was to be somewhat expected given no fewer than 19 players arrived at Portman Road over the summer, the Tractor Boys could find themselves sitting just three points shy of the League One play-off spots with a win over the U’s today. Defeat however could see the Blues drop down to 20th – although that seems an unlikely feat given their superior goal difference over sides around them. The 1981 UEFA Cup champions haven’t had much to sing about over the last two decades,

10

CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V IPSWICH TOWN

seeing Suffolk’s only EFL representatives impressively spend 17 consecutive seasons competing in England’s second tier before their relegation to the third was confirmed in 2019. However, following two mid table League One finishes, finally, renewed optimism has returned to Portman Road after their successful takeover from American group Gamechanger 20 Ltd. was confirmed over the summer – with the new owners setting lofty ambitions to become an ‘established Premier League team’. The high-profile summer arrivals of Macauley Bonne, Joe Piggott and Conor Chaplin will certainly add much needed firepower to Town’s attack, who were the league’s third

lowest scorers last season, only scoring 46 – with the aforementioned chipping in with 13 goals already this season in all competitions. Ipswich-born striker Macauley Bonne – who boasts two international appearances representing Zimbabwe – arrived as somewhat of a coup for Paul Cook’s men in the summer, having made 34 appearances for Queen’s Park Rangers the season prior in the Championship. An impressive goal return of nine in his opening ten games back in Ipswich Town colours, where he played as a youngster before leaving for rivals Norwich City in 2009, will have Blues fans desperate to see his loan made permanent following the conclusion of the deal. Kosovo international Bersant Celina – another impressive loan acquisition from French club

Dijon – adds a different dimension to Ipswich attacks, with the former Manchester City academy graduate, who impressively made four appearances for the Premier League giants during his six-year spell at the club already contributing three assists in his first four Town appearances. Despite Town’s early season woes, in which saw Paul Cook’s men sit in the League One relegation zone and winless after six games – the pre-season promotion favourites are beginning to live-up to expectations, winning four of their previous six games in all competitions. Most recently, goals from summer signings Conor Chaplin and Macauley Bonne deservedly earned the Tractor Boys all three points over struggling Shrewsbury Town at Portman Road. ■

Key Players: Name: George Edmundson Position: Defender Age: 24 Nationality: English The Oldham Athletic academy graduate arrived at Portman Road from Scottish giants Rangers during the summer and has quickly made himself at home in the heart of the Ipswich Town defence after breaking into Paul Cook’s side at the start of September, with the Tractor Boys only losing one game since his emergence into the side. The 24-year-old scored his maiden Ipswich goal in their 6-0 win over Doncaster Rovers at the end of last month. The ball playing central defender has averaged 6.5 accurate long balls per game since joining – which is only bettered by two players in the division.

Name: Lee Evans Position: Midfielder Age: 27 Nationality: Welsh After an impressive season with Wigan Athletic last season, the versatile midfielder made the switch to Suffolk to link up with manager Paul Cook once more and has continued his fine form over to this season, scoring three goals – which all came in Town’s 6-0 demolition of Doncaster Rovers in September, as well as assisting on three occasions. Name: Bersant Celina Position: Midfielder Age: 25 Nationality: Kosovan Following a season-long loan spell at Portman Road during the 2017/18 season, the Kosovan international made his Ipswich Town return this summer after joining on loan from French Ligue 2 side Dijon. The tricky winger, who can cause any defence problems on his day, spent six years at Premier League giants Manchester City, where he made four appearances, before making a multi-million-pound move to Swansea City in 2018. The 25-year-old, despite only making four Ipswich appearances this season, sits joint second in the League One assist chart, setting up three goals already.

Name: Sam Morsy Position: Midfielder Age: 30 Nationality: Egyptian Another impressive summer recruit, the tough tackling Egyptian international made the drop down to League One to link up with former manager Paul Cook – despite being a regular in Neil Warnock’s Middlesbrough side last season and at the start of this season in the Championship. The former Chesterfield and Port Vale man was immediately instated as the Tractor Boys’ captain upon his arrival and boasts over 12,000 minutes of playing experience playing in England’s second division, as well as making seven appearances for the Egyptian national team.

Name: Macauley Bonne Position: Striker Age: 25 Nationality: Zimbabwean The Ipswich-born striker progressed through the ranks at Portman Road before making the switch to East Anglian rivals Norwich City in 2009 – before getting his first taste of senior football at Colchester United. Despite being English born, the 25-year-old holds a dual-nationality with Zimbabwe allowing the striker to represent the Warriors on two occasions. Considered a coup upon his arrival this summer after making 34 appearances for QPR last season in the Championship and is duly living up to expectations having scored nine goals in his opening ten Ipswich Town outings.

From the SLO DAVE MATTHEW-JONES This afternoon we welcome the supporters, officials and players of Ipswich Town to the Abbey Stadium. In the past the clubs have mostly played each other in friendlies and testimonial matches, rarely in the League. However, there are many people who have a strong interest and bond with both sides. I have been fortunate to have met U’s fan and Paralympian Will Hipwell on a number of occasions over the years and after being part of the Great Britain Boccia squad during the Tokyo Paralympics this summer, he has shared his experiences for today’s Programme page: “I have been a member of the GB Boccia squad since 2015. Having missed out on selections for the Paralympics in Rio in 2016, this was my debut Paralympic Games. It was really good experience. I arrived the week before the competition started, which helped me to acclimatise to the temperature and time difference. “I was also able to train at the venue, which helped me get used to the court surface and prepare for the competition. “Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we had to stay in the athlete’s village so couldn’t really take in the sights of Tokyo. “I competed in both the individual and team competition. My first game was against the world champion which was an exciting challenge – and my first ball of the whole competition was perfect, which gave me a boost! “Whilst I didn’t win any of my individual matches I scored points in all but my first one. My opponents from Slovakia and Belgium were well known to me having played them in previous competitions, I had a game plan for all of my matches. “In the team competition we came close to beating China who are a very good team. We were drawing 7-7 going into the last end but they played some world class shots to win the match 11-7. “We then lost to Thailand but in the process, we gained a valuable insight into how they play which will hopefully stand us in good stead for

the next Paralympics in Paris in 2024. “We won against Argentina which was a great achievement as last time we played them was at the World Championships in 2018 and they won that game so it felt good to get revenge! “Unfortunately, we lost our final group game against Russia. It was disappointing not to finish on a high. There are still aspects of our game that, as a team we need to improve but we were all happy with our overall performance. “I wanted to go to Tokyo and give it my best shot, which I did, so from that point of view I achieved what I wanted. “When I got home I attended Channel 4’s Paralympics GB Athletes’ Homecoming show which was a great event. All the athletes met up at the Hilton Hotel beforehand where the Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave a speech and congratulated everyone on our achievements. “I want to say a big thank you to Cambridge United for their support. I was delighted to receive tweets from Mark Bonner, Greg Taylor and Harrison Dunk wishing me good luck. Now it is my turn to wish the best of luck to the lads for today’s big game.” ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Memories Down CUT THROAT LANE It feels like I have been waiting for this game for a while. In League terms, it has been 10,801 days, but who’s counting? I bet Steve Claridge and his manager still remember that day well! Our track record with today’s visitors is one of sporadicity. It took 75 years to meet the Tractorboys for the first time and it has been 29 years since the last duel, in League competition anyway. Today’s old programme focus is a Division Two fixture against our next opponents, Sheffield Wednesday. The game was played on 16 October 1982, our fifth season of six in said division. Our visitors were managed by none other than Jack Charlton and it is fair to say their squad looked decent for the time. Some interesting comments in the programme from school children who had been guests at the previous home game against Carlisle. Apart from anything else, they seemed to enjoy the “food” on offer at the game. The “look back in time” feature was interesting too, a 1972

match at Southport in front of a crowd of over 7,000. What would the Sandgrounders do today for a crowd of even half that? Anyway it was a decent game that day which ended in a 2-2 draw. We were 2-0 down within ten minutes of the restart (both from Gary Bannister) but Floyd Street and Chris Turner saved the day in front of a crowd of 5,677, which I sincerely hope is bettered this time round. And to end on a really cheery note. Ten Nazi leaders are hung as war criminals after the Nuremberg war trials on this day in 1946, including Joachim von Ribbentrop who was the first. He had been responsible as foreign secretary for the non-aggression pact signed with Russia in 1939. Which lasted until the advent of Operation Barbarossa and the invasion of Russia in 1941. Enjoy yourselves. ■

Hot OffAndrew the Habbin Stephen

“There will never be a crisis at Ipswich Town unless the white wine runs out in the board room.” John Cobbold How refreshing it is to hark back to the days when a benevolent brewer would give his managers plenty of time to build a side and end a losing streak and back their club financially with no desire for profit or personal glory. Bobby Robson struggled in his early days and the fans agitated for his dismissal. Of course, the board backed him and the rest, as they say, is history. Thyssen, Muhren and a reputation for flowing football is the heritage all Ipswich fans expect to be lived up to. It is astonishing to believe that under Alf Ramsey, following promotion from the Second Division, that Ipswich won the First Division title in the 60-61 season. That manager certainly had potential. Our first win against them was in the League Cup in 1987. We were fielding a patched up team of free transfers and trialists, including the Kimble twins. We didn’t expect much but what we got was a performance of grit and great promise. I seem to remember a fairly fractious atmosphere over the road in the Globe after the game. Exuberance, no doubt.

Most notably, we won 2-1 at Portman Road in November 1991 to go top of the Second Division, our highest league placing ever. The following season was the first for the new Premiership. Had we been in it, as well we might, who knows where we would be now! The speculation continues to this day. Whilst celebrating tradition and old fashioned values, how should we respond to the takeover of Newcastle United? As a fan, I would no doubt be delighted at the prospect of being competitive after all these years, but what about the cost? The football authorities talk about fit and proper persons checks and proper regulation of the game in the interest of fans but they have allowed the Big Six to become the Big Seven and another cuckoo in the nest to consume far more than their fair share of the game’s wealth. The appalling human rights record of Saudi Arabia is well known to everyone, but our government does more trade with them with anyone. Not that a small detail like this would sway anyone’s judgement. And there’s the dilemma - the promise of success bought at a very high price or the maintenance of decency and fairness in the peoples’ game. I think I know what the Cobbold’s would have said. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Women Darren Marjoram

Firstly, and as always, all of us involved with the Women’s team would like to wish Mark and the lads the very best of luck for today’s game. Hopefully we can be celebrating again at full time! It has been a very up and down couple of weeks for us with a local derby win over Cambridge City followed by a poor performance and heavy defeat against Actonians. The important thing after that defeat was to ensure we bounced back quickly, and we worked hard in training to ensure that was possible. We then travelled to face Stevenage on Sunday after a good week of training and with a strong squad, although still with a few players missing through injury. The first half was very even with neither team looking particularly dangerous, but in the second half we showed the bravery and excitement of previous weeks and took the lead through a Laura Baker penalty after Emma Jenkins was fouled in the box. The sustained pressure was now mounting on Stevenage and keeper Te’a Oldroyd was at times keeping the hosts in the game. However, Laura Mitchell doubled the lead with a smart turn and finish after a good through ball from Baker, to give us a lead

SPONSORED BY

which we never looked like giving up. A win and a clean sheet away from home is always a great result, but all credit to the players for the character they showed to bounce back from the previous game. Finally, a huge thanks to everyone who came to support, and in particular Paul Barry and Graham Daniels. Cambridge United really is one family and it’s something we are all privileged to be a part of. Up the U’s! ■

Around the Division LEAGUE ONE ROUND-UP Plymouth Argyle soared to the summit of the division with a 2-1 victory over Burton Albion at fortress Home Park. Playmaker Conor Grant drew first blood on the 15th minute with a sweet strike before Ryan Broom doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time. Lucas Akins restored parity on the hour mark with a scorching piledriver, but the Pilgrims held on as they extended their unbeaten run to 11 games. Despite recording just the solitary success in their last nine, the Brewers are in 10th but nonetheless need to address their concerning form. Just behind Ryan Lowe’s men are Wycombe Wanderers - also tied on 23 points after a rapid start secured a 2-0 win against Gillingham. Adams Park was rocking from the 2nd minute when Garath McCleary got on the end of a flick to convert in the near post, before grabbing a second just five minutes later when Brandon Hanlan drilled past his former employers. Vadaine Oliver had the opportunity to conjure up a consolation just past the half-hour mark, but the striker missed his spot kick and ultimately took the stuffing out of any potential comeback. It was the Chairboys’ third win on the spin and look good value for a promotion push. For the Gills, one win in eight sees them languishing in 19th. Dissecting the play-off picture, Wigan Athletic and Sunderland boast 3rd and 4th respectively with 22 points to their names on top of a handy couple of games in hand. The Latics, six wins in seven, occupy the sternest defence after shipping seven, whereas the Tyne and Wear outfit will be looking for a positive reaction from their recent 4-0 thumping from Portsmouth, their first loss since mid-August. Rotherham United are two points behind

and are now five unbeaten after finding their mojo. Hot on their heels are joint top-scorers MK Dons, who are averaging a stirring 65% possession per match. After consecutive wins, Karl Robinson’s Oxford United are 7th and on the hunt for a top 6 charge. Tied with the U’s on 18 points are Sheffield Wednesday and Bolton Wanderers after the Owls saw off the Trotters 1-0 at Hillsborough. Lee Gregory’s poked finish on the 66th minute was enough to separate the play-off chasing sides. In the goals for and goals against charts, Darren Moore’s men have been predominantly involved in edgy encounters, with 20 goals plundered in 11. Accrington Stanley sit a little healthier in 11th after recently banishing a four-game winless run - where they shipped 14 goals in the process. In a similar debacle and lodged in the middle of the table are Portsmouth. After a woeful set of results, which saw Danny Cowley’s team go seven without victory, they secured the previously mentioned morale-booster against Sunderland. A point and place behind are Morecambe, who have more than held their own thanks to the services of Cole Stockton, League One’s Player of the Month for a second month running. This afternoon’s visitors Ipswich Town arrive at the Abbey Stadium on the back of a 2-1 victory over Shrewsbury Town. The hosts’ pressure paid off on the 23rd minute when Conor Chaplin slammed home, but they were pegged back moments later courtesy of a sublime Shaun Whalley strike. The Tractor Boys ensured maximum points shortly after the interval when Macauley Bonne headed home his 9th goal of the season to send Paul Cook’s side up to 14th. It’s a sorry state of affairs for the Shrews,

they’re rooted to 23rd after three defeats in a row. Elsewhere in the division, AFC Wimbledon and Cambridge United obtain 13 points and are winless in four and three respectively but will breed confidence after previously clawing a last-gasp point. Lincoln City’s inconsistencies continue to prove frustrating; they have won once in their last five and need to generate some momentum. The same can be said about newcomers Cheltenham Town who have an identical record and have suffered three deflating defeats. Two points behind the Robins and situated in 20th are Fleetwood Town, whose record is contrasting. On one hand,

they haven’t tasted victory in four, but the optimist would state it’s a creditable one loss in seven. Charlton Athletic make up the start of the drop zone. It’s been gruelling under Nigel Adkins, but three points last time out raises hopes. Crewe Alexandra are on 8 points in 22nd and are the only side to win just one game. Despite not making for pretty reading, it’s still early days for the Railwaymen. Lodged at the bottom of the pile are Doncaster Rovers - but with a game in hand over their rivals and an impressive victory over MK Dons two weeks ago, the only way is up. ■ Owen Mizon

United fought back from two goals down at Crewe Alexandra last time out as goals from Sam Smith and Adam May saved the day. After getting off to a nightmare start which saw the U’s 2-0 down after 26 minutes, Mark Bonner’s men kept pushing and got their rewards with Smith’s 79th minute goal before May rescued a point with almost the last kick of the game.

CFU Corner Ben Phillips & Andrew Stephen “We are each other’s harvest; we are each other’s business; we are each other’s magnitude and bond.” G. Brooks The work of any fans’ group is made immeasurably easier when the club they support shares the same value system. We were delighted when Cambridge United signed up to the FA Diversity Code last year and have followed it up by applying the standards advocated in their recruitment policy and to fans. Our club was one of the first to be involved, a fact which speaks volumes. In addition, it is clear that the Community Trust have adopted a truly proactive approach to the issue, appointing staff accordingly, to build on some of the great work done during the pandemic and before. The Seniors’ Lunches and afternoon teas, the Dementia Café and the vast number of varied disability sessions run are all testimony to that. We are lucky to have Phil Mullen and Vicky Neal striving to make things better for the disabled, the elderly and the vulnerable. CFU have, in partnership with the club and the Trust, been seeking to make better provision for fans with dementia, mobility problems and autism, amongst other needs not traditionally catered for in football grounds. We plan to launch a questionnaire designed to identify and quantify the needs of our fans in order to understand them better and to meet them more fully. Only recently, CFU, through its volunteers, installed grab handles to help supporters who find the steps in the Main Stand hard to climb. We have tried to identify trip hazards and make them as visible as possible. When told about a problem, we try to help as much as we possibly can. The design of our venerable stadium doesn’t always make this easy but we do our best. We are always open to suggestions which may help to make the matchday experience easier and more comfortable for all fans. We are working with different communities,

such as the one based around the Cambridge Mosque to find ways of making them feel more welcome and better provided for at our ground. Anyone wanting to enjoy football should be able to without difficulty or opposition. It is very encouraging to see that CUFC have become official partners of Her Game Too, an organisation dedicated to improving the experience of women in football. CFU Board member, Emma Smith said, “It means a great deal that our club has taken a stance against sexist abuse. It sends a powerful message of support for the club’s female fans.” CFU are also keen to promote the Amber Belles group on Facebook which advocates the right of all female football fans to feel safe and welcome at football matches. It is amazing frankly that this is still an issue but there is still a lot of work to be done. Finally, and more personally, I was immeasurably saddened to hear of the recent death of Terry Eades. I started to watch the U’s in the late sixties and he quickly became my hero. He was also one of the best footballers I ever saw in our shirt. RIP Terry, and thank you. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

A BIG SEASON IN STORE VISIT THE NEW CAMBRIDGE UNITED STORE AT GRAND ARCADE

CAMBRIDGE CITY CENTRE, CB2 3BJ | GRANDARCADE.CO.UK |

View from the Press Box Doug Shulman The U’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Crewe two weeks marked the ten-game point in a new season for Mark Bonner’s men and an appropriate time to assess progression. In fact, the match at Gresty Road probably summarised the campaign to date in some respects with, firstly, a lesson in needing to be on top of your game from minute one, against a side who established themselves well in the third tier last year, following their own promotion. Being 2-0 down so early on was a big wake-up call but, the U’s have adapted well to adversity at a higher level, therefore, it was no surprise to see them emerge after the interval and dominate for large spells, scoring twice to clinch a point. The introduction of substitute Wes Hoolahan, after an injury lay-off, likewise Sam Smith and Shilow Tracey, also highlighted the impact of quality from the bench. Nevertheless, despite waiting until the 94th minute for Adam May’s glorious strike to secure the draw, sparking wild celebrations, post-match thoughts were perhaps tinged with disappointment that the U’s had not made the most of their chances and actually won the game. The ten games have produced three wins, four draws, 3 losses and just one defeat on the road, with an accompanying 16th place in League One representing a more than decent return. It is worth remembering also, that the U’s – following a couple of postponements – have games in hand on all teams above and below them. If they maintain these same levels for the remainder of the season, I think they will be looking upwards rather than over their shoulders come next May. Remarkably, tickets for today’s fixture with Ipswich were sold out 11 days ago, ensuring a biggest league gate at the Abbey since December 2000, when 7,505

passed through the turnstiles for a Division Two game against Peterborough. A far cry from this weekend ten years ago, when just 2,741 watched a Conference fixture with Alfreton. With Sheffield Wednesday, Wigan and Sunderland due to visit over the next six weeks, today’s gate could well be surpassed. Elsewhere, it was great to see U’s midfielder Jensen Weir in the England U20s starting XI last week, for the fixture with Italy. The Brighton loanee played the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw, which will add to his experience and certainly further his development. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
