MarkHeadBonner coach Last weekend at Portsmouth presented us with possibly our biggest challenge so far this season; the players brilliantly responded, arriving with the right mentality, and delivering a top performance. It was an excellent win! We coped with the pressure and atmosphere well and showed a superb temperament to remain focussed. The lads’ performance was strong and confident. We hope that we can not only use this performance as a springboard for us, but also a brilliant moment and reference point we can look back to throughout the season. The travelling support was great and really got behind us. We were surprised and grateful for the reception we received at South Mimms Services on the way home! The EFL Trophy has been a competition we have enjoyed playing in the past two seasons. The game allowed us to make changes and secure our second win. I was pleased to see young Kai Yearn play again, as well as Ben Worman playing well and showing his versatility, Jack Lankeseter and Jubril Okedina played their first 90 minutes of the season among other pleasing moments. The game was, as we expected going into the tie, against a technical and quick opposition - and to win by keeping a clean sheet and in the process putting one foot into the next stages of the Trophy was incredibly satisfying. We now turn our attentions to a busy week of league fixtures, welcoming both Fleetwood and Gillingham to The Abbey before traveling to Crewe next weekend. Three games against teams who have established themselves well at League One level in recent seasons. They have all done it in different ways and varying models – it is certainly something we can learn from as we try to consolidate and grow in League One. Fleetwood have started the season well following good wins against Rotherham and Cheltenham. We know the game today is going to be a tough encounter for us, and we will need to find all the qualities we did last weekend to be competitive again. Our aim is to accumulate points in consecutive games as often as possible, so we now need
to focus on the consistency of our play to deliver performances of which we know we can produce. The support of the team in recent weeks at The Abbey has been incredible and we hope that, whilst we have some box office fixtures in the calendar, the noise, encouragement, positivity, and energy from the stands continues to make a difference throughout every fixture. Our challenge is to give you performances that bring that out of you, but to continue to be confident underdogs, we must work together if we are to achieve what we all want. Welcome to Fleetwood Town and the Cod Army who have made the trip to the Abbey today. It is one of the joys of football to visit different grounds around the country. This is the first league game between the sides who have played once before in a 2014 FA Cup tie. That day went to the U’s 1-0 but now Fleetwood are an established League 1 side and the points, as with every game this season, will be hard to win. Having fans back this season is fantastic and at times the atmosphere in the Abbey has been electric. The away support too has been great too with 540 travelling to Portsmouth for a really memorable away day. We are fortunate that we do seem to be emerging from what for all of us has been a really hard time in living through the pandemic. If there is one institution, one workforce, that has been key to getting us through this it is the NHS and their dedicated, hardworking and talented staff. Today we are delighted to welcome all NHS workers as our guests as a small and heartfelt gesture. Thank you for all you have done, and for all that you continue to do. Looking forward, I have one plea to fans –
help the NHS as we get close to winter – if you are eligible, get vaccinated. As good as the news is about fans returning, and being able to see our team win games which many thought we wouldn’t, there was a dark cloud that emerged again this week. Derby County, a club with a great history, has finally hit the buffers and gone into Administration. Points deductions will be made not only for becoming insolvent but also they are likely to be made for accounts irregularities. How many more times do we need to see this happening to realise that something needs to change? You don’t need a degree in economics to see that the current way football operates is not sustainable. In the season before the Pandemic Championship clubs spent an average of 107% of their income on player pay alone. They are chasing the Premier League dream and when it doesn’t work it leaves clubs in a desperate situation. Abbey Helpers Wanted Cambridge United are looking for individuals who are keen to assist in creating the ultimate matchday experience at The Abbey Stadium. The Abbey Helpers, working with the Supporters Liaison Officer will play a key role in this ambition. Abbey Helpers will help create a warm and friendly atmosphere for all spectators, enhancing the spectator experience on match days and will be available to help those attending the Abbey Stadium for the first time. Their objective will be to make the matchday experience enjoyable for all supporters, to meet and greet supporters, to engage and assist supporters when coming to the match. Job Description • Provide support and information to all supporters at every home match • To provide a friendly, welcoming and trustworthy point of contact on match days supporting both individuals and families coming to the Abbey Stadium • Be on hand to show new visitors to the Abbey Stadium, around to the various and relevant points in the ground • To ensure that the Club’s Safeguarding and Vulnerable Adults policies and procedures are adhered to at all times • To ensure that a high standard of customer service is delivered at all times • Engage with supporters within the Fanzone area when open

New Doncaster Date Confirmed
The date for Cambridge United’s postponed League One fixture against Doncaster Rovers has been confirmed. The fixture, originally scheduled to take place on Saturday 4th September, will now be played on Tuesday 26th October at 7:45pm. Today’s visitors FLEETWOOD TOWN Simon Grayson’s Fleetwood Town are today’s visitors and will be making the 550-mile round with the aim of picking up a win that would move them level on points with the U’s. Now into their eighth season in League One, Fleetwood’s rise has been a remarkable success story. As recently as 2003/04 the Club plied their trade in the North West Counties League but six promotions in 10 seasons wrote the Club into footballing folklore. Fleetwood currently sit 16th in the league standings after seven games, three points below United on eight points. After getting off to a slow start, which saw the Cod Army lose their opening three fixtures, Saturday’s opponents are now on a four game unbeaten run. Wins against Rotherham and Cheltenham in addition to draws against Plymouth and

Sunderland have seen Fleetwood rise up the table and away from those at the bottom of the pack. There has been no shortage of entertainment for Town supporters this season, with goals flying in at both ends of the pitch. 11 goals conceded and 11 goals scored have meant for some high-scoring clashes, including their two victories which came by the scores of 3-2 and 4-2. The goals have been evenly shared with seven players having found the net and four (Camps, Andrew, Morton, Garner) with two goals to their names. With prolific League One promotion winner Simon Grayson now at the helm, Fleetwood supporters will be hoping that their story hasn’t reached its conclusion and there is at least one more chapter of triumph still to come. ■

A previous match between the sides saw a young Jamie Vardy playing for Fleetwood. It proves how important the football pyramid is in the development and progression of players in this country. Would he and others have made it in their careers if it wasn’t for the opportunity to develop at clubs like ours. All of those groups will have influence on the future and determine the direction of the game going forwards. Fair Game is led by the league and nonleague clubs involved with them who share the same principles. It is also being supported by experts in many different areas. They are backed by politicians and believe in sustainability, integrity and community. They wish to see football governed with fairness, openness and transparency at its core; honouring the mantra that the game can be a force for good and putting clubs at the heart of the communities they serve. There are some interesting ideas concerning Fan Engagement and the group refer to the following - that supporters will have the final say on items like the clubs name, nickname, colours, badge and leaving the geographical location connected to the clubs name. Clubs would be encouraged to adopt a multi-level approach to “Fan Engagement” and transparency through publication of formal club meetings. The regulator would also publish clubs’ performance against the “Fan Engagement” criteria in the Sustainability Index. More information concerning football clubs would also be available for supporters to see.
Part of being at the heart of the community is about being a good neighbour to everyone living locally in the area. Community Trusts do exceptional works however supporters across the country nowadays provide foodbanks and do other good works. Before lockdown we had started to collect items on matchdays for the local foodbanks and had distributed hundreds of old kits overseas. There are now two wheelie bins situated by the programme outlet near the shop. We are collecting old football kits and boots so please have a look through the draws and cupboards for any. If you have any surplus food, please donate it. No one should suffer from hunger so it is really important to support the foodbanks locally and also reduce the amount of waste being put into landfill. Memories Down CUT THROAT LANE Afternoon all and a big welcome to the Cod Army from Fleetwood. Let’s hope that by the endof this afternoon’s proceedings they will have had their chips. As a recently departed footballing legend once famously said, football’s a funny old game. Inthe last fortnight we’ve been mauled at the Abbey by a bunch of pesky gargoyles from a cathedral city up north. We then proceed with our own Saturday afternoon raid amongst the naval dockyards of the south and dislodge the nose of one formerly presiding over said gargoyles. Play up, eh! Talking of the navy, a loose connection as our trip of sentimentality today takes us to the famous old army town of Aldershot whose side we hosted in a Conference fixture fourteen years ago today, in what was our third campaign in what I always refer to as the “blur”. To befair nothing too much to get sentimental about that evening although our opponents, having had a pretty mediocre start to the season, went on to clinch the title with 31 wins and a points haul of 101. Whilst mere mortals like us and Burton contested the playoffs. I wonder who Aldershot’s manager was at the time……(Gary?) The programme is chunky at 64 pages and is interesting mainly because of some of the recent matches featured. The previous Saturday saw us at Stevenage, a memorable game with a great atmosphere and as the report says, “we” sang from 2pm to past 5. I do remember being particularly hoarse on the train home that day. And one of the few occasions in our history when we donned black and amber stripes, with white shorts and socks. You are, I know, enriched for that! If you wanted to give yourself a little shudder then flick to the chairman’s page and say to yourself, “there but for the grace of God we could be Swindon Town.” Anyway the game ended 1-1, Scott Rendell opened the scoring in the first half( a Shot hero to- be down the line) but skipper Dave Winfield
equalised in the 87th minute to salvage a point for the visitors. In the meantime Oxford loanee Marvin Robinson had joined the fray as a sub, then proceeded to get two yellow cards after the equaliser and off he went! On this day in 1952 born in New York City to Barbara Pitney Lamb and Franklin D’Olier Reeve was American actor Christopher Reeve. Probably best known for his role as Clark Kent in ‘Superman’( 1978) and his horrific horseriding accident in 1995 which left him paralysed from the shoulders down. He died nine years later. On that sobering note enjoy the game this afternoon and don’t forget there’s another one coming on Tuesday. ■

“I’m a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn’t have the heart to let him down.” Abraham Lincoln The Fleetwood Town story is an inspiring one. They are in their fourth incarnation at the moment, which is by far their most successful one. Derided by many as a suburb of Blackpool, Fleetwood have been punching above their weight since they were taken over by a man with wealth and vision. He transformed their stadium and then their fortunes and ambitions. As recently as 2012 we were playing them in the fifth tier of English Football. On that day in February, we saw a tale of two strikers unfold. One was a certain Jamie Vardy who we already knew well from his days at Halifax. He had a brilliant game and we all know what happened next. He made the very most of his talent and his late start in league football. The other was Richard Brodie who, I suspect, very few will remember. He came on as a substitute and was himself substituted later in the game-much to his surprise and apparent fury. He felt that he was already a huge star and behaved accordingly. When he played for York at Cambridge, he spent more time sitting on our excellent playing surface than chasing the ball. It seemed that he felt that the world and all the referees in it were so unfair. He waved
his arms a lot to show this. Later on he was seen slipping, with rather more justification, on the floor of the Gents in the Supporters’ Club. Three Stephen brothers in quick succession showed concern for his welfare and pointed out that his apparent inability to stay on his feet might be a real problem for a professional footballer. “But I’m a really good player,” he wailed. His response perhaps shows why his talent wasn’t ever really fully realised. For a time, Fleetwood were managed by a man named Joey Barton. He did pretty well there but I suspect that one day his temper might get the better of him. It is always vital to respect your opponents I feel. It has been a strange week. Following a hammering by Lincoln City, United played quite superbly to win at Fratton Park for the first time ever. Their fans didn’t expect it because we are another little club. Our fans were wonderful, a fact recognised by our players. They respond better to encouragement than derision as we Habbinites know only too well. Sadly, shortly afterwards, we heard the news that we’d lost the mercurial Jimmy Greaves. Whoever we support we know quality when we see it and he was a genius. RIP Jimmy and thank you. ■

Around the Division LEAGUE ONE ROUND-UP Wigan Athletic are firing at the top of the table after a comprehensive 1-4 victory at Accrington Stanley. Early strikes from Jack Whatmough and Will Keane put Latics into the driving seat, before Michael Nottingham grabbed a consolation moments into the second half. It couldn’t mount a comeback however as the rampant visitors put the game to bed via a Charlie Wyke brace to secure a fourth consecutive win and inflict successive defeats for Stanley, who fall to 11th. Sunderland were denied a sixth win in seven games in the dying embers of their 2-2 draw against Fleetwood Town. The Black Cats looked odds-on to remain at the summit after Aiden McGeady’s 76th minute penalty added to Ross Stewart’s opener, but perseverance and spirit saw the hosts claw a last-gasp point through Callum Morton and Ged Garner to send them up to 16th and stretch their unbeaten run to four games. MK Dons came from behind to secure a convincing 1-4 win against 10-man Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium. Top scorer Vadaine Oliver headed Steve Evans’ side in front on 20 – however, the dismissal of Stuart O’Keefe moments later changed the complexity of the game profusely. Scott Twine opened the floodgates before Peter Kioso, an own goal and Max Watters inflicted further damage for the visitors who are up to 3rd and without defeat in six. Plymouth Argyle are another side who haven’t tasted defeat since the opening day after a cool Ryan Hardie finish helped to edge out AFC Wimbledon 0-1 at Plough Lane. Maximum points sees the Pilgrims in a respectable 4th position whereas Mark Robinson’s side, second-highest scorers in the division, are 7th.

Both now without a win in three, Sheffield Wednesday were forced into a 1-1 draw against Shrewsbury Town at Hillsborough. Saido Berahino’s first goal since December 2018 handed the hosts the lead, but they squandered a chance to extend their advantage when Barry Bannan missed from the spot. It proved costly when Ryan Bowman equalised
minutes before half-time to ensure a share of the spoils for the improving Shrews. Cambridge United secured a first ever win at Fratton Park thanks to a spirited 1-2 victory. Joe Ironside’s 5th goal of the season broke the deadlock before a stunning Liam O’Neil volley put the visitors into the ascendency midway through the second half. Ronan Curtis conjured up an instant response, but it proved to be just a consolation as a third win in four sent Mark Bonner’s men up to 13th and consigned Pompey to 15th after three successive losses. Ipswich Town’s wait for a first win of the season finally came to an end as Macauley Bonne’s 30th-minute strike saw the Blues to a 0-1 victory at Lincoln City. Up and running,
Paul Cook’s men, who have scored in every game they’ve played so far, will now be eager to embark on a positive run of form. Two places and points ahead are the Imps who are yet to stamp their authority on the division. Despite remaining at the bottom of the pile, a late Tommy Rowe header gained Doncaster Rovers their first victory as Morecambe were beaten 1-0 at the Keepmoat Stadium. The task now for Richie Wellens’ side is to find the back of the net more often, with Rovers only finding the back of the net three times in seven. Community Trust Get back in the Game with Walking Football
Cambridge United Community Trust runs football sessions for men and women over the age of 50 every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. There are various levels of competition, including beginners walking football on Monday mornings as well as regular walking football on Mondays and Thursdays. There is a more competitive ‘super vets’ session every Tuesday evening with the usual rules of the game as a way to keep fit, healthy and meet new people. Although difficult to get used to, walking football is a great way to stay active. Trying not to run is the hardest part, regardless of age. We are delighted with the turnout at these sessions and it is great to see everyone socialising again after everything that has happened over the last few years. In addition to Thursday’s session, after the football we

Firstly, I would like to wish Mark and all the lads the very best of luck for today’s game. They certainly showed plenty of resilience to win 2-1 last Saturday and hopefully we can be celebrating another 3 points at the end of today! Neither the Women’s First Team or Development Team had a game last Sunday, but the previous week both were celebrating good wins. The first team had a tricky looking League Cup tie against Portishead, but comfortably won 4-0 with goals from top scorer Emma Jenkins, Abi Davies and a brace from Ruth Fox. It was a very pleasing performance where we controlled the game for long spells and the players showed the confidence to keep playing the way we have asked them to right to the final whistle. The Development Team opened their National Reserves campaign with a cracking 4-3 win over West Ham with two 16-year-olds getting the goals - Tabitha Brignall getting a hat-trick and Niamh Day joining her on the scoresheet. This is a very pleasing start with so many young talented players in the squad, but importantly, there is also some more experienced players there to help them. The squad is very strong and this is a good indicator of how bright the future is.

View from the Press Box Doug Shulman Last Saturday’s win at Portsmouth turned out to be a fantastic away trip in many respects. A sunny day by the sea, an almost perfect performance from the U’s and a brilliant reaction to both the result and display against Lincoln, last time out at the Abbey. I had been wondering for some years, whether I would ever see the U’s record a win over Portsmouth, having watched only two draws in my time following the club’s fortunes. The first being a 0-0 home League Cup draw in 2000 and, in 1992, a game in which the U’s took a 2-0 lead through Steve Claridge and Richard Wilkins, only to allow Pompey to grab a point in the 2nd half. It is rare for a side to have that level of hold over another so, after 16 winless matches stretching back to March 1978, it was tremendous to be able to cover the breaking of that particular mould. A delight for the travelling fans and also a fine way for my commentary colleague Mark Johnson to mark his 1,000th game covering the U’s for BBC Radio Cambridgeshire! On the pitch, the U’s performed with all the endeavour, grit and discipline which has become a hallmark of Mark Bonner’s side. Fratton Park can be an imposing place to visit, with home fans playing a big part in their strong record on the south coast, but the crowd were silenced after Joe Ironside’s opener and even more so when Liam O’Neil spectacularly volleyed in the second. The 544 United supporters certainly made themselves heard and, as the game wore on, it was them rather than the home fans we could hear high up in the press box. Today sees Fleetwood visit the Abbey. The Cod Army have successfully established themselves as a Football League club since promotion from the Conference in 2012 and deserve huge credit for doing so. In stark contrast, it is sad to see both Oldham and Derby County now suffering, as a result
of poor financial management and, in part, a disregard for supporters and the key role they play. Derby – a Football League club since 1888 – look set to enter administration having overspent trying to reach the Premier League and, therefore, face a possible 21-point deduction when coupled with a charge for breaching amortisation rules within their accounts. Oldham meanwhile, lie bottom of League Two and also face administration, with the club failing to meet salary payments and alienating fans who have been invading the pitch on a match day to protest. Let us hope that Oldham - in the top four divisions since 1907 – likewise Derby, find a way to resolve their issues. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

CFU Corner Ben Phillips & Andrew Stephen Why Should I Join CFU? Let me start by counting the reasons for joining us. How Have We Helped Our Club? 1. Away Travel is just one of the things that the club had neither time nor resources to run. Thanks to CFU and its dedicated volunteers, our fans will be able to attend every away game on their journey through League One.
2. Programmes - CFU organised a subscription service for those who prefer a hard copy of their programme. Thanks to this, more and more people will be able to expand their collections and enjoy this traditional pleasure.
3. Player of the Season was organised by CFU last season at the request of the club.
4. The CFU run Lottery Scheme has put a
considerable amount of money into the club for some years to pay for things which it would otherwise have to do without. I know what a difference it has made to Ian Darler’s work.It paid for the electronic scoreboards as well. It has also paid for materials used by the volunteers who help to maintain our venerable ground.

6. Diversity and Equality. We work closely with
other groups, such as CUSP, the Community Trust, Amber Belles, the YMCA and other Homeless organisations, the Allotments group and the Muslim community who attend the Cambridge Mosque to develop strong links with the community. All fans should feel welcome and properly provided for at football matches. Problems need to
